Take Action

Government Moves Closer to Stopping the Sale of Dangerous Baby Sleep Products

The action includes inclined and in-bed sleepers. Consumer Reports advises caregivers to immediately stop using these products for sleep.

A Kids II inclined sleeper shown with three varieties of in-bed sleepers.

Update: On June 2, 2021, the Consumer Product Safety Commission voted 3 to 1 to approve a final rule to require that all products sold and marketed for infant sleep meet established safety standards for sleep products.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission, the federal agency that oversees thousands of household products, is meeting today to discuss a draft rule that, if approved, would effectively eliminate from the marketplace several types of unsafe or potentially hazardous sleep products meant for babies up to 5 months old.

That includes inclined sleepers, which position babies at an angle of greater than 10 degrees, and in-bed sleepers, which are intended or marketed for parents who want to share their bed with their babies. Together, these kinds of products have been linked to dozens of infant deaths .

CPSC staff has delivered a strong recommendation (PDF) in favor of the new rule. But it cannot go into effect without a majority of CPSC commissioners approving it. They are expected to vote June 2, 2021.

Both types of products, which have been sold by companies such as Fisher-Price, Kids II, DockATot, and Baby Delight, do not align with safe sleep recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which state that babies should sleep alone, on their backs, on a firm, flat surface that is free of restraints and soft padding, in order to protect against injuries and death from suffocation, among other dangers.

Other products included in the rule are infant sleep hammocks, baby boxes (thick cardboard boxes with a thin infant mattress), compact bassinets that do not have a stand, handheld carriers, Moses baskets, travel tents meant for infant sleep, and soft-sided travel bassinets.

The CPSC estimates that Americans spend more than $125 million a year on the infant sleep products potentially affected by the new rule, and that at least a third of U.S. families with infants own one or more of the products.

“If the Commissioners vote to approve this rule it will be a huge victory for safe infant sleep,” says Ben Hoffman, MD, chairperson of the AAP Council on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention. “We know what safe sleep looks like, and addressing the products that encourage unsafe sleep practices for infants will save lives.”

For families that currently own one of the infant sleep products that would no longer be allowed on the market, this should be a clear signal to immediately stop using these products, says Oriene Shin, policy counsel for Consumer Reports.

An ongoing CR investigation has linked inclined sleepers, such as the Fisher-Price Rock ’n Play Sleeper, to at least 94 infant deaths. And it has tied in-bed sleepers, such as the DockATot and the Baby Delight Snuggle Nest, to at least 12 fatalities. Separately, the CPSC’s newly released draft rule has linked unregulated flat sleepers—which include products such as in-bed sleepers, baby boxes, and bassinets with no stand—to 11 deaths between Jan. 1, 2019, and Dec. 31, 2020.

The rule, if approved by a majority of the CPSC’s commissioners, would mark a turning point in a long and contentious debate between industry representatives and safety advocates regarding which types of infant sleepers are allowed on store shelves in the U.S.

Filling a Safety Gap

The new rule is meant to fill a gap in the CPSC’s oversight of infant sleep products.

Currently, only five categories of infant sleep products must meet mandatory safety standards before they can be sold: full-sized cribs, non-full-sized cribs, bassinets/cradles, play yards, and bedside sleepers. These products must adhere to strict requirements and must be safety-tested by a third party to ensure that they meet their respective standards before they can enter the marketplace. For example, the products’ sleep surface cannot have an incline of greater than 10 degrees, and the products’ sidewalls must be firm and measure at least 7.5 inches high. These design features help prevent babies from hazards such as suffocating and falling.

The new rule would mandate that any product marketed for infant sleep must adhere to one of these five safety standards; otherwise, the product will not be allowed on the market.

As CR has previously reported , exemptions to these standards have had fatal consequences. In 2010, Fisher-Price asked the CPSC to carve out its newly created inclined sleeper, the Rock ’n Play Sleeper, from the bassinet standard—a request the agency granted.

As a result, the company worked to create a voluntary standard for infant inclined sleep products, through ASTM International, an independent standard-setting organization that oversees thousands of voluntary product standards.

But unlike infant sleep products governed by mandatory standards, inclined sleepers were not adequately safety tested before going to market. And as more families used the products, more infant fatalities were linked to them. It wasn’t until April 2019, after CR uncovered dozens of infant deaths tied to the products and outlined the inherent risks of the sleepers, that Fisher-Price and several other inclined sleeper manufacturers recalled the products .

The existence of some products, such as bassinets, that have to meet safety standards, and others, such as inclined sleepers, that do not, has long confused consumers. Many assume that all products that are widely available for sale and marketed for overnight sleep and naps must be safe for sleeping babies.

“Most of us assume that if something is sold, that it has been proven to be safe,” says Hoffman at the AAP. “Sadly, this is not always the case, and the presence of dangerous infant sleep products on the market is an example that puts babies at risk, and can lead to tragedies.”

Sara Thompson, whose 15-week-old son Alex died in an inclined Fisher-Price Rock ’n Play Sleeper in 2011, says she had no idea the product would put her child at risk. “Had I been aware of the danger, I never would have opted for the inclined sleeper, and I would have strictly used the crib,” she says. “I trusted the company, and that’s a mistake I’ll never make again.”

In-bed sleepers are also not covered by a mandatory standard. These products are designed to be placed on an adult bed so that caregivers can sleep next to their infants. But safety advocates have noted that the products are often padded, do not have a firm, flat sleep surface, and do not have sidewalls that are high enough to prevent babies from rolling out. (DockATot recently stopped advertising its product as a sleeper, describing it as a product meant for supervised lounging or playing instead.)

Makers of in-bed sleepers are currently hoping to create a voluntary standard for their products, similar to what Fisher-Price did for inclined sleepers .

The new rule, however, would thwart that goal. In fact, the proposed language in the rule notes says the agency staff does not want “a repeat” of what happened when inclined sleepers were allowed to stay on the market first without any standard and then with a voluntary standard. “We note the development of infant inclined sleep products as a prime example of innovation preceding safety,” the CPSC staff states in the draft rule.

The agency staff states that it took many years for ASTM to establish a voluntary standard for infant inclined sleepers, and as "time went on, the hazards posed by inclined products became apparent in the accumulation of infant deaths and incidents .”

The rule also notes that a product’s messaging must be clear. In the briefing package, it states that “product packaging, marketing materials, inserts, and instructions cannot indicate that the product is for sleep, or imply through pictures of sleeping infants that sleeping in the product is acceptable, [and the] product name, description, and instructions also cannot include references to sleep, snooze, dream, or nap.”

Thompson notes that clear marketing would be particularly helpful for sleep-deprived parents. “I think for new parents researching sleep options , this rule will make a significant impact on their decisions,” she says. “It would mean no more questionable marketing ploys showing a baby sleeping but then saying the product is not for sleep in small print on a hidden tag.”

The AAP’s Hoffman agrees: “I think implementation of this rule will help make it easier for parents and caregivers by removing dangerous options from the marketplace, and ensuring that safe products are front and center.”

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, a trade organization whose members include makers of in-bed and inclined sleepers, said that it “supports requirements” that sleep surfaces be no greater than 10 degrees, but stated in a letter to the CPSC that a vote on the draft rule as written would be premature because the group believes further analysis is needed of other sleep products that would be included.

A Baby Delight spokesperson said that the company could not comment on the CPSC’s draft rule until after a final vote. DockATot did not respond to CR’s request for comment.

What’s Next

The CPSC commissioners are scheduled to vote on the new rule June 2, 2021. If a majority approves, the rule would go into effect a year after it’s finalized, and it would have a significant impact on the industry.

“Manufacturers would finally be accountable for addressing risks they have been downplaying for years,” says CR’s Shin. “The rule would draw a clear line between infant products for sleep and infant products not for sleep . Companies would not be able to market their products in ways that confuse parents and put babies at serious risk.”

This could cause some companies to stop making their sleepers; other companies may choose to reposition their sleepers as products meant for supervised play time instead.

“Sleeping babies are at greater risk in products that don’t align with expert medical recommendations, and the CPSC staff are right to insist that any infant sleep product meet strong, binding safety standards,” Shin says.

Update: The Consumer Product Safety Commission voted 3 to 1 on June 2, 2021 to approve a final rule to require that all products sold and marketed for infant sleep meet established safety standards for sleep products.

President Biden signed the Safe Sleep for Babies Act of 2021 on Monday, outlawing the manufacture and sale of crib bumpers and certain inclined infant sleepers.

Two baby sleep products linked to nearly 200 infant deaths will soon be banned under federal law, a move child safety advocates say will save children's lives.

Fisher-Price Ignored Safety Warnings Even After Infants Started Dying, Report Finds

Fisher-Price Ignored Safety Warnings Even After Infants Started Dying, Report Finds

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recorded 83 crib bumper-related deaths as well as 97 fatalities due to inclined sleepers, lawmakers said.

"For decades, consumer, health and parent groups have decried the sale of these dangerous products," Nancy Cowles, executive director of the group Kids In Danger, said in a statement .

"We thank the families and organizations who have worked so hard to keep children safe and look forward to the end of these deadly products on store shelves and in our nurseries," she added.

What the new law does to protect infants

Some padded sleep products pose a significant risk to infants who can roll over onto the padded surfaces and suffocate.

The legislation will ban inclined sleepers greater than 10 degrees that are "intended, marketed, or designed" as a sleeping surface for children up to age one.

It also outlaws products aimed at preventing babies from injuring themselves on the sides of a crib or fitting between the slats, such as padded crib bumpers, vinyl bumper guards and vertical crib slat covers. Non-padded mesh crib liners are excluded from the ban.

"Families will finally get the peace of mind that comes with knowing the sleep products they purchase for their newborns are safe," said Rep. Tony Cárdenas, D-Calif., who introduced the legislation. "This new law will save lives and protect our kids by banning life-threatening crib bumper pads and inclined sleep products from store shelves."

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep alone and on their backs on a firm, flat surface.

Both items will be designated as hazardous products banned under the Consumer Product Safety Act no later than 180 days after the law was enacted.

Inclined sleepers have been under scrutiny for a while

A number of companies in conjunction with the CPSC have recalled their infant inclined sleeper products in recent years over suffocation risks.

Among them was Fisher-Price's massively popular Rock 'n Play sleeper, which was brought to the market in 2009 and recalled a decade later in 2019 after selling roughly 4.7 million units.

The Rock 'n Play was the subject of a congressional investigation last year that found that the company knew of the risks posed by the sleeper long before it pulled it from store shelves.

Last June the CPSC approved a new federal safety standard for infant sleep products, such as inclined sleepers, ensuring they are at an angle 10 degrees or lower and meet other guidelines in place for cribs and bassinets.

Investing in your baby’s first bed is such an important buying decision.

Most parents do their research and choose a baby crib and mattress carefully. It needs to be a solid investment. But what if you’ve found the mattress and crib that you’ve fallen in love with and it gets recalled. That can be tough for parents, but you need not worry.

Jump to a specific section

Understanding Crib Recalls

What to know when buying a baby crib, amazon recalls all infant inclined sleepers from their website, 2021 baby cribs rockers and mattress recalls, 2020 baby crib and mattress recalls, baby crib mattress recalls, further reading on mattresses and cribs, further reading on baby recalls.

Crib recalls are relatively rare these days. Usually, when companies are recalling a crib or a baby mattress, they are taking the proactive approach to safety (voluntary recall), at least in the U.S. Knowing that, here is my list of baby crib and mattress recalls so you can continue to check your brand.

In rare instances, the official Consumer Product Safety Commission will issue warnings.

In the past 10 years, we’ve come a long way with baby safety efforts but there will always recall on baby cribs and mattresses if only proactive ones.

Buying a baby crib and mattress that you’ll love, that is also safest for your little one is important. Here are some buying guide tips to purchase the safest sleep system for your new one (from Consumer Reports ):

Don’t Go For All the Bells and Whistles

“The safest cribs have simple lines and no scrollwork or finials. Infants can strangle if their clothing gets caught in such detailed work.

Following this advice will get you a safer crib and save you money.” Don’t be fooled by new design trends, a basic crib is going to be a better investment in safety. There are plenty of ways you can design the baby’s room to add personality, don’t feel that you have to do that with bedding. Safety is best.

Buy Something New

Avoid hand-me-down or used cribs as much as possible. Safety standards have changed over the past few decades and would have been a perfectly safe crib 20 years ago is not going to be safe today. Many things can go wrong with older cribs, one of which could be due to human error when taking down and assembling the crib again.

There are many affordable new cribs that won’t break the bank. If your mother-in-law insists you use your husband’s old crib, politely say ‘no thank you and invest in one you know will be safe.

The ONLY Crib Mattress I Truly Trust | NewtonBaby

Yes, there are many crib mattresses out there. I only found ONE that was organic, supportive, breathable, and specificially designed for keeping babies safe (and parents sleeping at night). Newton is the LAST crib mattress we will buy.

Always Check Construction: Do Your Research

Before you buy, do your homework. Research the materials used in the construction of the crib, mattress and get honest reviews from actual buyers. When assembling, check for loose parts, defects in the wood, and anything that looks amiss.

Get the Pros to Assemble

Most cribs get shipped in boxes and need full assembly. As tempting as it can be to tackle this project on your own, I would strongly advise against that. It isn’t as expensive as you might think to get some pros to assemble. Isn’t $70 worth your peace of mind? A lot of baby crib and mattress recalls will happen because of human error in assembly. If possible get the pros on it. If not, at least set the crib up with a trusted friend.

Follow Instructions

Cribs come with a lot of instructions on how to assemble and use. Knowing the right height for your baby, how to adjust the side rails — all matters to the safety of your little one. Cribs get safer every year, but that doesn’t mean human error can cause problems. Don’t use bumper pads or extra bedding either. Babies don’t need pillows and lots of bedding to sleep comfortably anyway.

crib recalls

Just before the end of the year, Amazon takes off all kinds of infant inclined sleepers even those who have not been officially recalled, due to numerous cases connected with infant death. They say this decision is due to the fact that these sleepers are not safe for use since they have an angle of 10 to 30 degrees, providing an unsafe position for babies who can roll when they are asleep.

In fact, there have been numerous reports of infants who have died because they have fallen asleep at an angle that has restricted their pathways and has caused them a fatality. With this decision, the company thinks it’s about time these sleepers are taken off the market, as a precaution and with one goal – to provide the safest products for infants that will not lead to any hazards in the future.

Crib Recall Information and Models Parents Need to Know

As a fomer educator and mom blogger who's a mother of four, Kristin shares helpful tips and advice on a variety of topics.

Learn about our Editorial Policy .

When it comes to your baby, safety should be your top priority. Everything you surround your little one with needs to be the safest possible space, and this includes baby cribs. Even if the crib you chose while your baby was a newborn checked out fine, problems are occasionally found, and recalls are issued. It's essential to stay on top of the latest recalls and other safety issues with cribs so you can make sure that your baby sleeps safely and soundly.

Finding Recalls

While most cribs are problem-free, some models feature faulty hardware or parts that can pose hazardous risks to infants and toddlers. When this occurs, manufacturers issue recalls that notify consumers of potentially serious injuries associated with particular crib models.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's Crib Information Center provides the latest information about crib recalls and other product safety news. Signing up for e-mail alerts will help you stay on top of the latest recalls and safety issues related to cribs. You can also report safety incidents to the Crib Information Center.

In addition, filling out and registering the product safety information card when you buy a new crib will allow you to receive recall alerts by mail or e-mail.

Aside from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website, other sites offer information on product recalls that often include crib and infant mattress recalls.

  • Consumer's Affairs - The Consumer's Affairs website lists infant products that have been recalled due to safety concerns.
  • SafeKids.org - SafeKids.org is dedicated to listing all notable recalls for child-centric products. Users inquiring about a recall can easily go to the site, click on a particular year and even the month, to see which products were recalled in the time frame.

Buying a Crib

Even though cribs are expensive, it is best to buy a new crib for your baby. If you plan to use a used crib, get it from a reputable consignment shop or through a friend, and verify the crib has all of its pieces. Cribs missing slats, screws, or bolts or that are cracked are not safe for your baby to use. Always test a crib before you put your baby in it to make sure you're not putting your child at risk.

Why Cribs Get Recalled

Baby cribs get recalled when there are safety concerns with any part of the crib. Common reasons for a recall are:

  • Crib slats or end panels create the possibility for a baby's head to become lodged and trapped, resulting in possible injury or death
  • Concern with the stability of the slats
  • Safety concerns with any mesh material included in the crib
  • Faulty brackets needed to hold the crib together securely and safely

Crib safety is serious business. All cribs go through rigorous testing requirements that emulate common wear and tear that a crib will endure in its lifespan. These testing measures are used to determine if any of the crib parts have the possibility to loosen, break, or separate.

Notable Recalls

While many recalls are minor, some affect thousands of cribs and the families who bought them. Knowing about the major recalls can help you avoid purchasing a defective crib and may provide you with information about what types of cribs to avoid when looking for a new crib.

Drop-Side Crib Recalls and Other Crib and Furniture Recalls

Drop-side cribs were once popular because they made it easy to lift a baby in and out of the crib. Between 2009 and 2011, millions of drop-side cribs were recalled because the hardware used to hold up the movable panel on the crib could fail. Infants and toddlers could potentially become trapped and suffocate between the crib mattress and the detached drop-side. Thirty-two infant deaths resulted from faulty drop-sided cribs. A few of the more notable drop-side crib recalls include:

  • In 2020, Serena & Lily recalled about 260 Nash convertible cribs due to potential injury hazards.
  • In 2015, 18,000 DaVinci brand cribs were recalled due to laceration, fall, and entrapment concerns. This same year Baby's Dream recalled nearly 5,000 cribs and furniture pieces because of lead paint violations.
  • In 2014, Bexco recalled Franklin and Ben Mason 4-in-1 convertible cribs because of fall and entrapment concerns.
  • In 2012, over 16,000 Rockland Furniture Drop-Side cribs that were sold at JC Penny stores were recalled. The next year, Rockland Furniture Round Cribs were recalled due to entrapment, suffocation, and fall hazards.
  • In March 2011, Delta Enterprise Corp. re-issued the 2008 recall of more than 985,000 crib models with the "Crib Trigger Lock and Safety Peg" hardware component.
  • The Land of Nod, manufactured by Status Furniture, issued a recall of 300 "Rosebud" cribs. This model features a drop-side rail that has hardware known to occasionally break or fail.
  • Pottery Barn recalled all drop-side cribs made from 1999-2010 because of entrapment, suffocation, and fall hazards.
  • In October 2010, multiple manufacturers recalled cribs because of faulty drop-side hardware. The large recall included Victory Land Group for about 34,000 Heritage Collection 3-in-1 drop-side cribs, Angel Line for 3,400 Longwood Forest and Angel Line cribs, and 3,250 Ethan Allen drop-side cribs.
  • The largest drop-side recall took place in June 2010, when the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled over 2 million drop-side cribs, including 750,000 Evenflo Jenny Lind cribs, 747,000 Delta Enterprise Corp. cribs, 306,000 LaJobi Bonavita, Babi Italia, and ISSI brand cribs, and 130,000 Jardine Enterprises cribs.

Companies such as Graco, Simplicity, and Stork Craft also recalled cribs because of the drop-side issue. As a result, many large corporations no longer manufacture or sell drop-side cribs, and the CPSC began to prohibit traditional drop-side cribs as of June 28, 2011.

Falling Mattress

A few different cribs have been recalled because of unstable mattress supports. When the mattresses fail, infants and toddlers can be badly injured or suffocate.

  • In February 2011, IKEA issued a recall for more than 26,000 SNIGLAR cribs sold in the U.S. and Canada because some of the mattress bolts were not long enough to support the mattress, causing the mattress to detach and collapse.
  • From 2007-2010, many Simplicity cribs were recalled because the mattress support frame could bend or collapse and cause a suffocation risk.
  • In 2010, Delta Enterprise Corp. recalled cribs using a wooden stabilizer bar over concerns that the bar would not provide adequate stability and cause the mattress to collapse.

Choosing a stable and reliable crib mattress is as crucial to an infant's health as selecting the crib itself. Ensure that the mattress you select meets all safety requirements and doesn't have any recalls.

Fixing Recalled Cribs

Parents who learn that their cribs are affected by a recall should follow several steps to prevent injury or harm to their babies. First, immediately discontinue the use of a recalled crib. Check the crib to ensure it was installed correctly and to determine if you need updated hardware. Never try to repair a recalled crib yourself. Strictly follow the manufacturer or CPSC guidelines on what to do. Some companies will send you a free repair kit or replacement parts for the faulty hardware. After you've conducted the repairs, test it out before your baby uses it again.

Keeping Babies Safe , an organization dedicated to child product safety, notes that over 11 million cribs have been affected by recalls in just the last few years. The organization provides tips for parents who are using recalled cribs to help make babies safe, including only using manufacturer-provided parts to fix recalled cribs and making sure the crib is not missing any bolts, screws, or other hardware. If the manufacturer does not provide a fix for the recalled crib, it is best to play it safe and purchase a new crib for your infant or toddler.

Arm Yourself With Information

When it comes to your baby's safety, arm yourself with information. Know how to register a crib and how to stay up to date on any product recalls. If you do have a recalled crib, know the steps to resolve the problem so that you can rest assured that your baby is always safe while he/she sleeps.

Crib Recalls: Affected Products & How To Keep Your Baby Safe

9,500 er visits & 100+ deaths connected to cribs , playpens, & bassinets every year.

Over the years, many crib recalls have been issued by the CPSC ( U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ) due to unsafe designs or defects that led to some infant deaths  and numerous injuries or incidents.

As many as 9,500 injuries and over 100+ deaths relating to cribs , bassinets , and playpens happen in the US each year, according to a 19-year study published in the Pediatrics journal in 2011. (1)

The study also disclosed that as many as 83% of these incidents specifically involved cribs . (1)

What were the main reasons for these incidents, what did the authorities do, and did the retailers or manufacturers take responsibility?

What brands were affected, how do you know if your crib is recalled, and what should you do next?

Read on to find out.

Ban On Drop-Side Cribs & The CPSC ’s Revamped Crib Recall Policy

A number of the incidents in the Pediatrics study involved entrapment , suffocation , or other serious injuries from drop-side cribs . (1)

These cribs had one side that parents can “drop” so they can easily get their babies in or out of the crib.

(source: globalhealthnow.org)

This led experts from the CPSC and APA (American Academy of Pediatrics) to consider these cribs unsafe for babies. (1)

In June 2011, a ban was issued against drop-side cribs, leading to numerous crib recalls. (1)(2)

Presently, manufacturers are required to comply with the improved federal safety standards .

New Safety Protocols Outlaw Drop-Side Cribs

All cribs must meet stringent requirements, including: (2)

  • Impact testing for side rails, slat strength, and mattress supports
  • Designed with limited movable sides or without drop sides and/or headboards
  • Improve hardware quality to reduce the risks of loosened parts that can affect the crib ’s structural integrity.
  • Drop-side cribs must never be sold or resold.
  • Any recalled crib must never be sold on the market.
  • In the event of drop-side-related recalls, free repair kits , immobilizer components, or extra drop-side hardware are no longer allowed.

Why Do Cribs Get Recalled?

Defects, problems, & other safety issues: why do cribs get recalled.

There can be different reasons why cribs are recalled, but these are mostly related to safety issues that might lead to falls, entrapment , or other injury risks.

Depending on the situation, the CPSC or crib manufacturers might issue the recall after the following:

  • The product failed in safety tests
  • The product doesn’t meet newly released safety protocols
  • Reports of incidents involving the product
  • Other important reasons

Drop-Side Crib Recalls & Other Hardware Or Design Issues

Drop-side cribs were popular when they came out in the 1940s because it was easier for parents to pick up or put down their babies. However, according to the CPSC ’s statement in May 2010, at least 32 infant deaths from suffocation and strangulation were linked to these products. (7)

The child can get trapped between the crib’s drop-side rail and the main frame. These incidents can lead to injuries, disabilities , or even death if the children aren’t found and saved immediately. (7)

Falling Mattresses From Unstable Support

The crib ’s structural integrity is very important to ensure that the mattress stays intact. A falling mattress can also cause the child to fall or become entrapped, posing injury risks or death.

Unstable or weak legs can also pose safety hazards.

What Was The Recall On Cribs In 2011?

Several crib recalls were issued after the ban against drop-side cribs was announced in June 2011. (1)(2)

Can You Fix Recalled Cribs ?

It depends on the issue. Be sure to follow the advice of the CPSC or the manufacturer regarding the specific product recall .

For example, if they advise returning or destroying the recalled crib (for replacement or refund), then be sure to do it.

If the manufacturer offers a free repair kit , you can fix the recalled cribs yourself.

Our Crib Recommendations

Safety in buying cribs, how do you know if a crib is safe.

  • If possible, choose a trusted brand known for making high-quality cribs .
  • Check the product’s description and design; check for quality and safety certification if you can.
  • Always check for recalls.
  • Regularly your baby’s crib for safety hazards, including loose hardware, weakened legs or slats , etc.
  • Be sure also to check crib accessories for recalls and safety hazards.

How Do I Find Out If My Crib Has Been Recalled?

Always check the brand’s main shop or website, the CPSC ’s website ( cpsc .gov), or Motherhood Community for product recall advisories.

Sign up for our regular recall alerts and never miss an important recall again:

How Many Years Is A Crib Good For?

Although cribs aren’t sold with an expiration date, the CPSC recommends avoiding products over 10 years old. (8)

And while some parents might argue that we’ve all survived the heirloom cribs from our generation, they might not meet the current safety standards .

For example, drop-side cribs were considered safe before they were banned in 2011. Also, much older cribs might have other hazards, such as lead in paint banned in 1978. (8)

Is A Crib From 1991 Safe?

No. The CPSC doesn’t recommend hand-me-down cribs for safety reasons.

Is It Safe To Use A Crib From 1990?

No. Again, these cribs might be unsafe and could fail current safety protocols.

Importance of Product Recalls for Consumer Safety

What are product recalls and why are they important.

Product recalls are an essential component of consumer safety. They occur when a manufacturer, distributor, or regulatory authority discovers that a product poses a risk to the safety or health of consumers. The purpose of recalls is to remove or repair these dangerous products from the market and prevent further harm.

The importance of product recalls for consumer safety cannot be overstated. They serve as a crucial mechanism to protect individuals, especially children, from potential hazards and prevent accidents or injuries. Recalls ensure that consumers are promptly informed about any risks associated with a particular product, empowering them with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their purchases and usage.

The Impact of Product Recalls on Consumer Trust

When a product recall is effectively communicated and addressed, it can strengthen consumer trust in the brand or manufacturer. By taking responsibility for the safety of their products, companies demonstrate their commitment to customer well-being. This helps to foster a sense of trust and reliability among consumers, who are more likely to continue supporting businesses that prioritize their safety.

On the other hand, mishandling or ignoring product recalls can have severe consequences for a company’s reputation. Failure to address safety concerns promptly or adequately can result in a loss of consumer trust, damaging the brand’s image and potentially leading to significant financial losses. Therefore, companies must handle recalls with transparency, urgency, and a genuine concern for their customers’ safety.

Yogurt-Covered Pretzels, Other Coated Confections Recalled for Salmonella

Products sold at walmart, target, dollar general, hy-vee.

Aaron Kassraie,

decorative yogurt covered pretzels

A variety of yogurt-covered pretzels and other confection-coated treats have been recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella, a type of bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults.

The recall was made after the manufacturer, Palmer Candy Co., was informed by its liquid-coating supplier of a potential contamination, according to an announcement posted by the Food and Drug Administration.

The recalled products were sold nationwide at Walmart, Target, Dollar General and Hy-Vee, among other stores.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall. Production of the affected products has been suspended while the FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem.

The recalled products

The recalled confectionary-coated snacks were sold under several brand names, including Casey’s, Favorite Day Bakery, Freshness Guaranteed, Kwik Trip Inc., Palmer, Snackin’ With The Crew, Sconza Chocolates, Sunny Select, Sweet Smiles and Urge.

More than 25 products are affected, including caramel pretzel swirls, white fudge mini cookies, zebra fudge cookies and assorted snack blends containing pretzels, chocolate and other candy.

The products have “best by” dates from December 2024 to April 2025. Find the full list of products on the FDA’s announcement page .

Consumers who bought the recalled food may return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Other questions can be made to Palmer Candy Co. at 800-831-0828.

Symptoms of a salmonella infection

Salmonellosis, the intestinal infection caused by the salmonella bacteria, typically leads to diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. In severe cases, the infection can spread from the intestines to urine, blood, bones, joints, spinal fluid or brain.

Symptoms generally begin six hours to six days after infection and can last up to seven days. However, in some instances, symptoms can appear weeks after infection or remain for several weeks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most people can recover without an antibiotic, but treatment is recommended for anyone with severe illness. Infected adults over age 65 (or over 50 if an underlying condition such as heart disease is present), infants and those with a weakened immune system are also advised to take an antibiotic.

Call a physician right away if you or a loved one have:

  • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102 degrees
  • Diarrhea for more than three days that is not improving
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • So much vomiting that liquid can’t be kept down, or signs of dehydration , such as infrequent urination, feeling dizzy when standing up, or dry mouth and throat
