Yea or Nay? An Occupational Therapist Tests the Wildly Popular Stokke Tripp Trapp

From sensory experience to bond-building with caregivers, so many of the positives of mealtime start with a highchair that provides proper support and comfort. “This can set baby up for lots of great things as they grow,” says pediatric occupational therapist Judy Katz OTR. “Things like accepting new challenges while still feeling safe and comfortable or developing trust in the adults that care for them, providing them with joy and excitement at each meal. There’s also oral-sensory development, feeling new textures, tasting new tastes, using hands to bring food to the mouth, using utensils…it all starts in a comfortable, functional highchair!”
One such highchair all over the influencer-webz is the Stokke Tripp Trapp which promises all the above by way of a comfortable, ergonomic seating position and adjustable design. It’s also got a Scandi aesthetic that’s minimalist and chic look while promising to grow with your child from 6 months to..forever (no seriously, you can change the configuration that completely).
So, does the Stokke Tripp Trapp live up to the hype (and price tag?). We asked Katz to test Tripp Trapp for three months with her toddler granddaughter. Here’s her review.
- Value: 19/20
- Functionality: 20/20
- Quality/Ease of Use: 20/20
- Aesthetics: 19/20
- Comfort: 19/20
- TOTAL: 97/100
Expert Tester
Judy Katz OTR/R is a pediatric occupational therapist with years of experience in private practice. She tested the Stokke Tripp Trapp in soft mint with cushion and tray configuration with her 18-month-old granddaughter over three months.
First Reaction
“I loved off the bat the ability to adjust the position of the footrest and seat. This promotes a secure and stable foundation for baby’s posture. I also loved that the seat is comfortable and roomy. Though, not restrictive, it’s pretty escape-proof. But if you’re worried about your toddler hopping out, there are safety straps. Finally, I really appreciated the aesthetic. Most highchairs are eyesores or institutional looking. The Trip Trapp looks fun and innovative.”
Major Points for Posture
“If adjusted correctly, baby’s legs can bend, and their feet can rest on the footrest instead of dangling down or cramping up. This, along with the ergonomic seating, creates an overall design that provides freedom of movement, while being supported and safe. This is essential because posture is so important while eating because it affects the internal organs and the complicated anatomy of mouth and swallowing structures. Eating is a job, and babies need to be seated properly to eat efficiently without being exhausted in the process. With proper physical support of the baby’s head, core and internal organs, eating can be the focus—and it can be enjoyable, which is the most important thing.”
It Became Her Granddaughter’s Special Place
“Since we’ve been using the Tripp Trapp for mealtime when I have my granddaughter, she’s come to learn that it’s her special space. When she’s in the chair, she anticipates that she will get quality adult attention and good food to taste and explore. Her body is comfortable, and she has room to change her position, without being confined. This is unique when it comes to highchairs.”
The Surprising Social Benefit
“My favorite unexpected discovery is that as my granddaughter gained more independence with her eating, we could remove the tray (which, by the way, is super easy to take on and off and pop and in the dishwasher), and pull her up to the dining table to eat with the whole crew and be part of the action, which is not only more fun, but establishes early positive associations around food and the dinner table.”
Final Thoughts
“The freedom of movement while still being supportive was most important from an OT perspective, but from a grandma perspective, I love how easy to clean it is. The most cleaning required is wiping down the frame and cushion with a damp towel.”

Detailed Test Results
The Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair is part of the High chairs test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, High chairs models like the Tripp Trapp High Chair are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
Safety: Safety for each high chair was assessed by our testing, which is based on the federal safety standard, which references ASTM F404-21. Tests include evaluations of the restraint system, stability of the high chair, and static load assessments, as well as other tests.
Ease of use: Ease of use is based on a trained panel's assessments of harness adjustment and use, folding and unfolding, removing and replacing the tray and tray insert (if any), adjusting seat back and height where applicable, removing and replacing the seat cover.

Seat pads, if present, should be machine washable and/or easy to clean effectively with a damp cloth or sponge.
Weight is the weight of the chair (with tray in place) in pounds.
Footprint is the amount of floor space, in square inches, that the chair takes up while in use. Small is 575 square inches or less. Medium is 576 to 675 square inches. Large is 676 square inches and up.
Folds for storage
Whether or not the high chair folds for storage (many do not).
Harness type
Harness type is 5-point, incorporating shoulder as well as waist and crotch straps - which we strongly recommend - or 3-point. Some harnesses convert from 5-point to 3-point by removing the shoulder straps. We suggest using the 5-point configuration, unless you're very confident that your child will stay put and not try to wiggle out of the harness.
One-hand tray removal
Being able to remove the high chair tray easily, with one hand, is a great feature. It allows you to keep the other hand free to tend to your baby.
Wheels and casters
Whether the high chair has wheels or casters to aid in moving the chair around.
Multiple recline positions
Whether the high chair's seat back is able to be reclined in one or more positions.
Height adjusts
Whether or not the high chair has a height adjustment feature.
How to clean seat pad
The manufacturer's instructions for cleaning the high chair's seat pad. (Most high chair frames are cleaned simply by wiping with a mild cleaning solution and sponge or cloth.) Some seat pads are machine washable, others are hand washable, and some just wipe-clean with the aforementioned mild cleaning solution and cloth.
Converts to booster seat
With some models, you can just detach the high chair seat from the frame, and voila! a booster seat. Just strap the booster securely to a dining chair, to let your little one sit with the family at the table. (Other high chairs may require some disassembly or futzing, but it's usually a fairly easy process.)
Converts to toddler/youth chair
Some high chairs can be converted to toddler or "youth" chairs. The weight limit for each chair indicates how large a child - or, for some models, a young adult - can be accommodated.

Stokke Tripp Trapp vs. Steps vs. Clikk High Chair Comparison
Stokke brings a unique perspective to the often short-lived high chair: Instead of a plastic product you'll use only for a year or two, the Norwegian manufacturer's wooden chairs can last a lifetime.
In 1972, Stokke launched the Tripp Trapp , its first and best-selling high chair that supports your child properly as she grows—while also bringing tasteful style to your well-decorated home.
In addition to the timeless Tripp Trapp, Stokke offers two additional high chairs, each with a different take on the needs of modern families.
Like the Tripp Trapp, the Stokke Steps grows with your child, with the ability to be configured for a newborn, a toddler and even an adult.
Stokke's newest option, the Clikk , has the lifespan of a traditional high chair while adding contemporary style and a quick, tools-free assembly that makes it convenient for travel.
All Stokke high chairs are known for their European-made quality, comfortable ergonomics and sleek Scandinavian style. But the Stokke Tripp Trapp, Steps and Clikk are different in their design, price point and configuration options.
We'll help you choose the high chair that's right for your family in this comparison of the Stokke Tripp Trapp , Stokke Steps and Stokke Clikk .
Stokke Tripp Trapp
The Stokke Tripp Trapp has been a classic for generations, with more than 11 million chairs sold worldwide since 1972. The wooden high chair fits both your child and your decor, bringing baby to the dining table to enjoy their first meals alongside the rest of the family.
Adjust the height of the chair's seat and foot plates to provide proper ergonomics, and adapt the chair to your child's needs as she grows. Start using the chair with an infant by attaching the Newborn Set (sold separately) before converting the Tripp Trapp to a high chair with optional tray. When your child no longer needs the harness, the Tripp Trapp becomes a regular wooden chair that can even support a grown adult.
Stokke Steps
The Stokke Steps adapts to your child's needs along the many steps of her development.
Attach the Steps Bouncer (sold separately) to the chair to bring a newborn to the table, or use the bouncer independently to rock baby on the floor. Once your child is ready for a high chair, the Steps includes an adjustable footrest and an adjustable backrest for support through toddlerhood. Remove the Baby Set and optional tray for a chair that your child can use for years to come.
Stokke Clikk
The Stokke Clikk brings Scandinavian design to a chair that's easy to clean, quick to assemble and more affordable than Stokke's other high chairs.
Weighing only 8 pounds, the Clikk simplifies travel and installation, offering a tools-free assembly that involves only a few simple clicks. While the Clikk can't be used for a newborn or an adult like Stokke's other chairs, it can be used with or without the Baby Set support and tray from baby's first meal through toddlerhood.
Stokke Tripp Trapp vs. Steps vs. Clikk Age and Weight Limits
One of the greatest differences between the Stokke Tripp Trapp , Steps and Clikk is the length of time you can use the high chair as your child grows.
The Stokke Clikk covers the length of time most families use a high chair: from approximately 6 months (when your baby can begin eating solid foods) to around age 3.
But the Stokke Tripp Trapp and Stokke Steps can also be configured for newborns and even for adults, allowing you to begin using the chairs earlier and continue using them for years to come.
Here's a look at the age and weight limits for the three chairs, depending on their configurations.
With Newborn Attachments
With the Stokke Steps and Tripp Trapp , your baby can join you at the dinner table from her first days at home, long before she's ready for her own mealtime.
The Steps chair can connect with the Steps Bouncer (sold separately for $199.99), which can also be used independently on the floor.
The Tripp Trapp pairs with the Newborn Set (sold separately for $149.99), which allows baby to lie flat while remaining within view at table height.
The Stokke Clikk cannot be used until approximately 6 months, when your baby is able to sit upright.
- Tripp Trapp: Birth to 6 months with Tripp Trapp Newborn Set
- Steps: Birth to 6 months with Steps Bouncer
- Clikk: Not suitable for newborns
With Baby Set and/or Harness
All three products are easy to use in high chair mode, in which your child is elevated to the table and secured with a harness and plastic restraint (which Stokke calls the "baby set").
For the Clikk , the baby set and food tray are integrated into a single piece that snaps into the chair.
All components for the Tripp Trapp and Steps can be purchased individually, but Stokke also offers two bundle options: a high chair that includes the baby set and a complete bundle that adds a tray and cushion.
All three Stokke high chairs can be used from approximately 6 months to 3 years with the baby set and harness.
- Tripp Trapp: 6 months to approximately 3 years with baby set and harness
- Steps: 6 months to approximately 3 years with baby set and harness
- Clikk: 6 months to approximately 3 years with harness
Eventually, your child will be too big for a high chair, yet not quite big enough for a regular chair. Your toddler probably won't be able to reach the table in your dining chairs, which also won't provide foot support for proper ergonomics.
The chairs for the Stokke Tripp Trapp and Steps can be used for many years as a seat for the dining table, homework, or arts and crafts time. They're even sturdy enough to support an adult and can be paired with a cushion to add comfort.
With its smaller seat and limited functionality, the Clikk can be used only until around age 3.
- Tripp Trapp: 3 years to 242 pounds
- Steps: 3 years to 187 pounds
- Clikk: Suitable up to about 3 years or 33 pounds
Stokke Tripp Trapp vs. Steps vs. Clikk Price
The Clikk is Stokke's most affordable high chair, priced $110 lower than the Tripp Trapp and $120 lower than the Steps if the same components are purchased.
The Tripp Trapp and Steps are a longer-term investment, considering they can be used both before and after your child needs a high chair—even into adulthood.
Here's a look at pricing for the three products, based on their configurations as a standalone chair, basic high chair, and fully-accessorized high chair.
- Clikk : sold only as high chair
- Tripp Trapp Chair : $219-$269
- Steps Chair : $219
The "high chair" bundle for the Stokke Tripp Trapp and Steps includes the chair and baby set attachment.
A food tray is sold separately for the Tripp Trapp and Steps—most European parents opt to bring baby to the table instead—but it's included with the Clikk.
- Clikk : $179 (includes chair and tray)
- Tripp Trapp High Chair : $299-349 (includes chair and baby set; add tray for $65)
- Steps High Chair : $309 (includes chair and baby set; add tray for $65)
Chair with Tray and Cushion
Stokke offers a complete bundle for the Tripp Trapp and Steps that includes all the accessories you'd want in a high chair: the chair, baby set, tray and cushion.
By purchasing the bundle instead of separate accessories, you'll save at least $24 on the Tripp Trapp and $8 on the Steps. But some parents prefer buying separate items to customize colors or for registry purposes.
- Clikk high chair and cushion : $218
- Tripp Trapp Complete Bundle : $399
- Steps Complete Bundle : $409
Stokke Tripp Trapp vs. Steps vs. Clikk Weight and Dimensions
The Stokke Clikk is lighter than the Tripp Trapp or Steps , making it the most portable of the three chairs.
True to its name, the legs of the chair simply click in and out, allowing you to reduce the size of the chair if you're traveling or storing it when not in use.
The Tripp Trapp and Steps require assembly with screws, so they can't be quickly disassembled.
High Chair Dimensions
- Tripp Trapp: 19.3"L x 31.1"H x 18.1"W
- Steps: 14.7"L x 15.9"H x 17.3"W
- Clikk: 27.2"L x 32.5"H x 22.1"W
High Chair Weight
- Tripp Trapp: 15.4 pounds
- Steps: 10 pounds
- Clikk: 8.3 pounds
Stokke Tripp Trapp vs. Steps vs. Clikk Accessories
Accessories help customize your high chair, whether you're adding functionality during mealtime, updating its appearance, or converting it for an older child.
The Tripp Trapp and Steps have the widest range of add-ons—including multiple types of cushions and newborn accessories—because they can be used throughout multiple stages of your child's development.
Fewer accessories are available for the Clikk , but it's the only Stokke high chair that offers a travel bag.
A customized version of the EZPZ, a popular silicone mat that suctions to the tray to prevent messy meals, is available for each Stokke high chair.

Key Differences Between Abiie And Tripp Trapp High Chairs
Now that we’ve covered the key features and benefits of the Abiie Jonathan and Stokke Tripp Trapp chairs, let’s compare them in detail across some important factors.
- Adjustability and Features
Both of these popular high chair models grow with your child, but there are some differences in their adjustability and features.
The Abiie Jonathan offers 3 recline positions, while the Tripp Trapp does not recline. The Jonathan’s footrest is adjustable to 3 positions compared to the Tripp Trapp’s independently adjustable seat and footrest depths.
The Jonathan has a removable tray that adjusts in angle and depth. The Tripp Trapp does not come with a tray, but Stokke does offer a plastic tray or cushioned baby set as accessories for an added cost. The Tripp Trapp tray only locks in one position.
Both chairs have a 5-point harness to keep your child secure. The Abiie harness straps are padded while the Tripp Trapp’s are unpadded.
For portability, the Jonathan’s legs remove easily while the Tripp Trapp stacks neatly but its legs do not come off.
One unique Tripp Trapp feature is its ability to accommodate two children at once with the right accessories.
So when it comes to flexibility, the Abiie Jonathan offers more adjustable features out of the box. The Tripp Trapp sets itself apart with its ergonomic, adaptable design but requires more accessories for full functionality.
- Ease of Cleaning
Given frequent messes during mealtimes, an easy-to-clean high chair is essential.
The Jonathan’s sleek wood design has few cracks for food to get trapped. The plastic tray is top-rack dishwasher safe, as are the tray cover and seat back cushion. The leatherette seat cushion is wipeable.
Likewise, the Tripp Trapp chair is crafted from smooth beech wood that’s simple to wipe clean. There are no cloth covers or hidden crevices. The plastic tray and cushions are dishwasher safe too.
So when it comes to cleaning, both of these wooden chairs are very easy to maintain. The lack of fabric makes them effortless to wipe down and sanitize.
- Comfort and Ergonomics
Since high chairs are where babies and toddlers spend a good chunk of time, comfort is key.
The Abiie Jonathan offers thick foam cushions and a 3-position recline option for comfort.
The footrest, seat depth, and lumbar support all adjust to properly position your growing child.
The Tripp Trapp’s minimalist sleek wood design focuses heavily on ergonomics.
The independent seat and footrest settings allow you to adjust the angles to match your child’s height.
This customization provides ideal back and leg positioning. However, some parents find the chair’s hard wood less cozy.
So the Jonathan likely offers more immediate softness for babies, while the Tripp Trapp promotes better long-term posture as kids grow. Additional cushions can make the Tripp Trapp more comfortable for infants.
Safety should be the number one priority in choosing any baby gear.
Fortunately, both the Abiie Jonathan and Stokke Tripp Trapp meet or exceed all JPMA and ASTM safety standards.
The Jonathan features a 5-point padded harness to keep wiggly toddlers secure. Parents love that the buckle clicks audibly into place for added peace of mind.
The Tripp Trapp also includes a 5-point harness, but reviewers note it can be tricky to tighten properly. Some parents opt to use the Stokke harness cover for extra safety and comfort.
Based on consumer feedback, the Abiie’s straps and buckle system seem easier to use and adjust for safe and escape-proof restraint. So the Jonathan gets a slight advantage for safety.
- Durability and Longevity
A well-made high chair should last for years, even as your child grows into a big kid and adult.
The Abiie Jonathan and Stokke Tripp Trapp both earn high marks for durability, with their solid wood construction made to support up to 250-300 pounds.
The Jonathan’s components like the buckle, straps, and footrest are durable but the cushion covers may be more prone to wear over time. However, the cushions are replaceable.
The Tripp Trapp’s simplistic wood design should offer outstanding longevity. All parts are replaceable if needed, and you can buy higher weight capacity accessories as your child grows.
In terms of durability, both options are built to last through years of use. The Tripp Trapp likely has a longer lifespan thanks to its minimal, all-wood construction.
- Style and Design
Let’s face it – in many households, high chairs are a big eyesore. Matching your nursery or dining room style may factor into your purchase.
The Abiie Jonathan has a sleek, contemporary design in gender-neutral colors like white, natural wood, gray, and black. Its streamlined silhouette works in modern homes.
The iconic Stokke Tripp Trapp makes a true design statement with its classic Scandinavian style. The open frame and natural wood finish offer a minimalist, organic look. Range of colors from neutrals to brights.
So when it comes to style, the Jonathan offers versatile, modern appeal. But the Tripp Trapp is arguably the more stylish showpiece.
A final consideration is the cost difference between these two popular high chairs.
The Abiie Jonathan retails for $219.99.
This includes the seat, tray, cushions, and accessories right out of the box.
The Stokke Tripp Trapp starts at a higher price point, around $249 for just the basic chair.
Accessories like the baby set, tray, and cushions will cost over $100+ more.
So the Abiie Jonathan offers more value upfront, with everything you need included.
The Tripp Trapp requires more additional purchases, so costs can quickly climb higher.

Price and availability
Design and features, how we tested, things you won't find on the box, who's it best for, need an alternative.
We tested out the Stokke Tripp Trapp newborn set to see what it offered that was different to similar highchair designs on the market.
The big selling point of this newborn set is that it's been designed so that newborns can sit up at the table with their parents and other siblings. It has a supportive design and five-point harness to ensure that they are safe at all times. Like all Tripp Trapp designs , it also grows with your baby, so you'll get plenty of use out of it.
If you're looking for the best highchair for your baby, this product is a worthy contender. But if you're really after something a little cheaper, you may prefer the Mamas & Papas Juice highchair .
- VIEW AT AMAZON
For this review, Good to Know asked one of our parent testers, Anna Bailey - also the Editor - to try out the Tripp Trapp newborn set with her baby, Freddie. "It’s so lovely that Freddie can join us around the table at eye level - especially when we have friends and family over because they all want to see as much of Freddie as possible," Anna said.
The Tripp Trapp newborn set is a new version of Stokke's famous highchair.
"I’ve always loved the Tripp Trapp - it’s such a classic and iconic design. I love how it grows with your child and can be used literally from birth to adulthood. It's been so ahead of the times for sustainability," said Anna.
The newborn Tripp Trapp allows you to sit your baby up at the table, via a clever five-point harness.
"The seat needs to be completely flat for babies aged 0 months - but can easily be inclined when they reach two months. You just squeeze the lever, which is positioned behind the foot-rest," added Anna.
"Freddie is our only child, but I can imagine this would be even more useful if you had other children and wanted to keep up any routine you might have with sitting around the table," added Anna.
Stokke's Tripp Trapp newborn set is currently selling on Amazon for its RRP of £348 . This is a premium product and it doesn't come cheap but is it worth the investment? Anna thought so.
"You're paying for years of use," she said. "Stokke has designed this highchair so it can be used from birth through toddlerhood and even into adulthood. It's a steep initial layout but then you'll never have to buy another chair ever again."
It's also a stylish, well-made piece of wooden furniture that complements most decors and colour palettes. "This is a beautifully crafted piece of baby kit," added Anna.
Weighs: 6.47kg | Age: Birth - adulthood The Tripp Trapp newborn set consists of the classic Tripp Trapp chair with a newborn insert seat. "I was a bit nervous about using this when Freddie was very tiny and worried about fitting it safely - but it couldn’t be easier. It just slots on the back of the chair and handy colour indicators on both sides let you know if it's positioned correctly (green) or not (red)," said Anna.
"The five-way harness (with two adjustable shoulder straps, two around the hips and one between the legs) makes her feel very safe and secure."
Once she'd got over her initial reservations, Anna found she even missed the chair when she didn't have it. "When we visited people and we didn’t have this with us, Freddie sat on my lap - which is fine, but not ideal, or, on the floor in her car seat - so she felt really excluded and I didn’t want to leave her there for too long, especially if she dozed off," said Anna. "But she’s very happy and safe sitting and sleeping in the newborn set (especially as it reclines for naps)."
- Tested the Tripp Trapp and newborn set for several weeks with a newborn.
- Tried out all the features to see what set this product apart from others.
- Noted how easy it was to assemble, clean and move.
Anna found that Stokke has added some nice little additions to the Tripp Trapp newborn set. "The attachment for toys has also been really useful, and has helped keep Freddie entertained while we’ve been busy eating (and chatting). Having the mobile above her is genius, as any other toys we’ve given her have ended up on the floor in seconds - so this ensured she’s always got something to play with right in front of her," said Anna.
As newborns aren't the neatest of creatures, Anna also found the fact that the newborn set is washable really useful. "It’s also so handy that the liner and the straps can all be removed and washed at 40 C."
In terms of negatives, Anna could only think of one (minor) thing: "I struggled to think of a downside," she said. "The only problem I could think of was storing it for another baby - as it’s a pretty awkward size and shape to box up. It would be great if it came with a storage bag and/or a carry bag in case you wanted to visit someone else with a Tripp Trapp."
Anna thought that this newborn set would suit someone who wasn't on a budget and wanted "a chic design that would blend in with their adult furniture".
It is also a useful highchair if you have older children and want your newborn to be included at mealtimes. "As this high chair can be adapted as your baby grows, this chair would also suit someone looking for longevity from their highchair design."
The Stokke Tripp Trapp might get the thumbs up from our reviewer but it doesn't come cheap. For a more reasonably priced highchair, check out the Mamas & Papas' Juice .
