16 Best Places to Eat in Valencia

By Author Daryl and Mindi Hirsch

Pinterest image: image of paella with caption reading 'Where to Eat in Valencia Spain'

As if being the home of Paella isn’t enough, Valencia has beaches, street art and more. We’ve asked a local expert to share her picks for the best places to eat in Valencia Spain. Discover how to eat like a local in Spain’s third largest city.

Paella on Beach in Valencia Spain

Situated on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, Valencia is a popular tourist destination thanks to its fabulous beaches, provocative street art and ultra-modern City of the Arts and Sciences. But as food travelers, we’re especially intrigued by the Valencia food scene.

Famous for being the city where Paella was invented, Valencia has much to offer food travelers beyond the iconic rice dish. The Southeastern Spanish city has a bustling central market and plenty of cute cafes where visitors can try local specialties and wash them down with a glass of Horchata or Agua de Valencia .

A Local’s Picks for the Best Places to Eat in Valencia Spain

Are you wondering where to eat in Valencia? We’ve asked local expert Teresa Gomez of Brogan Abroad to provide her insider tips for the best food in Valencia.

These are her recommendations for some of the best restaurants in Valencia Spain:

Favorite Local Valencia Restaurant

Clochinas at La Pilareta in Valencia Spain

It is tough to pick one favorite restaurant in Valencia, but my favorite is Bar La Pilareta, also known as Casa de las Clóchinas.

Clóchina is a type of mussel that is only found in the seawaters around Valencia. It is also known as a Mediterranean mussel. Slightly smaller than its mussel cousins, the Mediterranean’s saltier water intensifies this bivalve’s flavor.

As you have probably guessed by now, Bar La Pilareta specializes in C lóchinas and is one of the best places to try the local delicacy. Clóchinas are seasonal – you will find the freshest ones from May to the end of August.

Lined up with boxes along the floor for customers to dispose of C lóchinas shells, the bar itself is worth a visit. Bar La Pilareta opened its doors just over a century ago. The Valencian modernist interior is unchanged with tiled walls, hand-carved wooden cabinets behind the bar and period-era lamps.

Bar La Pilareta is located at Carrer del Moro Zeid, 13, 46001 València, Spain.

Iconic Valencia Food

Paella Valenciana at L'Estimat in Valencia Spain

Even though Paella is considered a quintessentially Spanish dish, it actually originated in Valencia. The city is located right next to Spain’s rice-growing region, so it’s no surprise that there is no better place to have this iconic dish. Moreover, the full name of the original dish is Paella Valenciana .

Paella only has a handful of main ingredients – beans (four different types), chicken, rabbit and snails and rice, of course! You can find all sorts of Paella variations in Valencia with the most popular being seafood Paella .

Paella takes a long time to cook, so Valencians tend to eat it on Sundays. Accordingly, local, multi-generational families crowd paella restaurants during weekends. With these family gatherings slowly disappearing due to a changing modern lifestyle, it’s a joy to eat a meal in the thick of the hubbub. Make sure to book a table well in advance if you want to eat authentic paella in Valencia.

Pro Tip While eating in Valencia, be sure to also try the tellinas , local tiny white mussels.

If you’re wondering where to eat paella in Valencia, consider one or more of the following Valencia restaurants:

  • Casa Carmela
  • Casa Isabel
  • Casa Roberto
  • Destino Puerto
  • El Coso del Mar
  • La Alegría de La Huerta
  • La Riuà
  • Restaurante Levante
  • Restaurante Mateu
  • Vlue Arribar

Favorite Valencia Cafe

Halloumi Burger at Federal Cafe in Valencia

My favorite cafe in Valencia is Federal Café which is named after a small town in New South Wales, Australia. Federal serves modern and casual food in a bright and airy space where people can work and socialize.

The cafe offers a wide range of healthy and tasty dishes throughout the day, with classics such as muesli for breakfast, eggs benedict for brunch, elaborate artisanal sandwiches for lunch and indulgent brownies for dessert. My favorite dish at Federal is the halloumi burger topped with arugula salad and tomato chutney plus sides of chunky chips and apple coleslaw.

Serving food served throughout the day is a novel concept in Spain. Valencian locals have received this modern concept well, particularly nearby freelancers who come to eat armed with their laptops.

Pro Tip Coffee is also a specialty here. Federal serves it with fresh milk, a rarity in Spain where ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk is king.

Federal Café is located at Carrer de l’Ambaixador Vich, 15, 46002 València, Spain.

Special Occasion Meal

La Sucursal was born out of love for the local gastronomy by its founder Loles Salvador. With the second generation of the well-known Salvador family now at the helm, La Sucursal is a successful family affair, earning recognition from Michelin for good cooking and excellent wine.

La Sucursal offers traditional Mediterranean food with a creative and contemporary twist. I recommend the restaurant’s Boat Menu which features local delicacies such as razor clams, Iberian pork, sea cucumber and squid ink rice.

As a bonus, La Sucursal’s location couldn’t be more suited to its cuisine. Located on the top floor of the striking Veles e Vents building in the Valencia Marina, the restaurant offers 360-degree views of the city, port and Malvarrosa Beach.

Pro Tip Le Sucursal’s food, the prices and location scream special occasion. Make sure to book a table way in advance due to the restaurant’s popularity.

La Sucursal is located at Marina de Valencia, Muelle de la Aduana, s/n, 46024 Valencia, Spain.

Favorite Valencia Dessert

Cubanitos at Trufas Martinez in Valencia

My favorite dessert place features many people’s weakness… chocolate. But this is not just any chocolate, it’s Valencian chocolate from Trufas Martínez.

Trufas Martínez has been creating artisanal chocolates since 1931 and is a Valencian classic. The chocolatier has changed little since opening its doors to the public three generations ago. They have, however, kept up with the times as people’s tastes have evolved.

Trufas Martínez is known for their truffles and chocography (printed chocolate sheets), but their famous Cubanitos keep me coming back. Cubanitos are little cigar-shaped biscuits covered in chocolate and filled with chocolate mousse. The shape may not necessarily be politically correct, but this is Spain and they are heavenly, so… that’s my excuse!

Trufas Martínez has two shops in Valencia. Teresa frequents the original shop located at Carrer de Russafa, 12, 46004 València, Spain.

Hidden Valencia Gem

Bocadillo de Calamares at El Tostadero in Valencia

My favorite hidden gem is probably the most ‘rough and ready’ place to eat in Valencia. Unless you know it’s there, you’d walk past and not even take notice. However, this spot serves the simplest and most satisfying food on the go – Bocadillo de Calamares (cuttlefish baguette sandwich).

Bar El Tostadero is a spit and sawdust kind of place frequented by local working-class people who pop out of work for something quick to eat for their almuerzo (typically mid-morning) meal. There are no tables. Instead, Bar El Tostadero has a semicircle-shaped bar with a handful of stools and two windows at either end. Diners can have a quick bite either at the bar or while standing just outside at the window.

Bar El Tostadero specializes in one thing – cuttlefish. When you eat here, you can choose between two different styles, either grilled or deep-fried.

The deep-fried version is the most popular. Cooks coat the cuttlefish in an egg and flour batter and then deep-fry the fish for a few minutes before stuffing it into a crusty baguette with a spread of ajo aceite (literally translated as garlic oil, but very similar to alioli ).

These cuttlefish are simple, scrumptious and cheap!

Pro Tip Make sure you bring cash. Credit cards are not accepted here.

Bar El Tostadero is located at Avinguda de l’Oest, 31, 46001 València, Spain.

Café Infanta*

Patatas bravas at Cafe Infanta in Valencia, Spain - Best restaurants in Valencia Spain | https://passportandplates.com

We came here by pure coincidence after missing my reservation at another restaurant. Best accidental discovery ever. This place is decisively Spanish fusion  and probably a tad touristy, but everything we ate here was amazing: chicken croquettes, duck samosas, goat cheese samosas, patatas bravas, moussaka, and spinach salad. None of the dishes disappointed, so I have a feeling that you can’t go wrong with most menu choices here.

La Pilareta*

Mussels at La Pilareta in Valencia, Spain - Best restaurants in Valencia Spain | https://passportandplates.com

Does La Pilareta have the best tapas in Valencia? I say yes, considering that one of the saddest parts of my trip was not eating here enough. They serve both traditional Valencian dishes as well as typical Spanish fare, and everything is incredibly fresh. They charge slightly more for sitting at a table rather than at the bar, but the difference is pretty insignificant. What to order: esgarraet (pepper and cured cod salad), sepia (cuttlefish), clochinas (Valencian mussels) and patatas bravas (spiced potatoes). This was one of my favorite places for classic Spanish meals in Valencia.

La Freiduría Puesto No5

A variety of tapas at La Freiduria in Valencia, Spain - Best restaurants in Valencia Spain | https://passportandplates.com

La Freiduría is quite the unassuming shop, located on the corner of one of the main shopping streets in Colón. It prides itself on fresh fried seafood and totally delivers. We ordered gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp), patatas bravas (#PotatoLovers) and a cazón de tiburón. I later realized that we accidentally ordered fried shark (the cazón), although we didn’t know it at the time. It tasted good, too *guilty face.*

Steak, padron peppers, and potato chips at Aquarium Restaurant in Valencia, Spain - Best restaurants in Valencia Spain | https://passportandplates.com

Aquarium was my last meal in Valencia, and it has a bit of a strange ambiance. Most of the customers were older men and seemed to know each other, and we got some strange looks when we walked in. The menu was a bit confusing, but the waiter created a meal mix just for us. Ambiance aside, the food is delicious and it’s conveniently located on Gran Via.

La Pepica, located near La Malvarrosa Beach was actually a favorite hangout spot of Ernest Hemingway back when it was just a shack. It has been around since 1898, has a gorgeous interior decor, and has a large selection of delicious paellas, tasting menus, and more. La Pepica is not to be missed and is an excellent beach restaurant in Valencia. Be sure to make reservations because it gets crowded.

Trendy Dinner Restaurants in Valencia

Potato balls, hummus, and bread at Copenhagen Restaurant in Valencia, Spain - Best restaurants in Valencia Spain | https://passportandplates.com

Copenhagen is the only vegetarian restaurant on this list because Spain isn’t particularly vegetarian-friendly and I generally prefer my protein in animal form. That being said, the food was actually really tasty, albeit distinctly not Spanish. We shared hummus (eh) and two types of croquettes and I had the Indian curry. Pretty impressive considering there was no meat to be found!

Beef and spinach atop mashed potatoes at Imperdible restaurant in Valencia, Spain - Best restaurants in Valencia Spain | https://passportandplates.com

Imperdible is a good choice if you’re looking for a slightly more upscale restaurant with a variety of both traditional and fusion choices. It’s located right next to Mercado Colón , which makes it a good spot for people watching. While the food here was exquisite, it was on the pricier side for Valencia. I had the rabo de toro (oxtail) with potatoes, which is one of my favorite Andalusian dishes. It was tasty, although the portion was on the on the smaller side. Overall, it’s a good option for a nice night out but not a must-visit.

Luckily, we were able to squeeze in at the bar at Canalla one evening since all the tables were taken (make reservations, guys!). They serve a mixture of small shared plates and individual portions. What to order: the tuna tartar bowl, prawn empanadillas, and the Mexican taco with tuna belly.

The Best Coffee in Valencia

I’m a coffee addict, so naturally, I had to find the best coffee in the city. Although Spain is a coffee-loving country, sometimes you just want to snob it up and drink the gourmet stuff. Enter Coffee Time, located inside the Russafa Market. It’s hands down my favorite cup of java in Valencia – plus, the owner actually put  an ice cube made of coffee  in my iced coffee. If that doesn’t scream customer service, I don’t know what does.

The Best Spanish Tortilla in Valencia

Spanish tortilla, coffee, water, olives and bread at La Peseta Restaurant in Valencia, Spain - Best restaurants in Valencia Spain | https://passportandplates.com

I would have never discovered La Peseta if it weren’t for my local Valencian friend. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk from Malvarrosa Beach. The place itself is more of a bar that happens to serve various types of tortilla than a proper restaurant. We drove here one Sunday morning and opted for two kinds of tortilla: one with onions and potatoes and the other with cod. Surprisingly, both were spectacular, especially with the generous serving of alli-oli (garlic aioli) on the side. This truly is a spot for locals , but definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

The Best Cafés in Valencia

Federal is one of those ultra-modern and incredibly designed cafes that makes you want to spend the entire day there. The food is great if you’re looking for a really good sandwich or salad , if not a tad overpriced. I had a really good burger with fries here, and they even serve mosto, one of my favorite Spanish drinks! Side note: mosto is grape juice made from unfermented grapes. Come here for a leisurely lunch or coffee – you won’t regret it.

In Valencia, there are several shops and cafes that have been deemed “special places.” These special places have historical and/or cultural significance to the city. Ubik is one such place, a combination second-hand bookshop meets café. It holds events for the local community, does a paella lunch on Sundays, and is a generally cool spot to hang out. I personally didn’t  love the food here, but it’s a cozy option to grab a coffee or relax with a good book.

I’m a tad obsessed with cafes and bakeries and Dulce de Leche totally hits the spot. It’s an excellent café to go for brunch , where you can get a fresh juice, quiche, croissant, yogurt and coffee all for a set price. They have a mouthwatering bakeshop and tons of tempting savory items as well. The inside looks incredibly relaxing, although we chose to sit outside and people-watch. I highly recommend it for both food and ambiance.

The Best Pintxos in Valencia

Tanto Monta*

The pintxos bar at Tanto Monta in Valencia, Spain - Best restaurants in Valencia Spain | https://passportandplates.com

I only went to Tanto Monta once in Valencia and am SO disappointed I didn’t get a chance to return! It’s located slightly outside the center (15 minutes in a cab) and is incredibly popular . Even though we arrived “early” (by Spanish time) at 8 pm, there was only one empty table left. It’s easily the best place for cheap eats in Valencia that’s also delicious.

Quick lesson:  pintxos are essentially little snacks served buffet-style at specialty bars. They’re popular in the Basque region of Spain and often consist of bread with toppings. At Tanto Monta, you pick out your preferred pintxos and servers heat them up and bring them to your table. The fun part is that nothing is labeled, so it’s a bit of a Russian Roulette as to what you’ll get. The food was heavenly and incredibly cheap (around 10 euro per person) which meant a happy wallet and stomach. Win, win! Get here early to snag a table and all the good pintxos; they don’t take reservations.

Located in Plaza de la Reina, Taberna La Reina is also a decent option for pintxos. It’s nowhere near as rave-worthy as Tanto Monta, but its location is incredibly convenient since it’s in the heart of the city. We came here one day for a snack after an early morning tour and were pleased to find a huge variety of good quality pintxos. Not a must visit, but it’s an excellent choice in this part of town!

Although I only visited El Huerto for lunch as part of a  food tour , it deserves a special shout-out. Located in Russafa, El Huerto is definitely a restaurant worth adding trying. It was nearly the end of summer by the time we sampled Crudo Bar and in our excitement, we went slightly overboard and ordered a lot of food. Somehow, every dish we ordered was better than the last; Crudo Bar is hands down the best restaurant in Valencia for fusion seafood. We had the curry patatas bravas, tuna tataki, AND tuna carpaccio because there’s no such thing as too much tuna, fresh shrimp, and octopus. Just looking at the photos again is making me drool. Oh, orxata (OR-CHA-TAH), how I love thee. Valencians are obsessed with this refreshing drink made from tiger nuts, and I can guarantee it will be your new addiction. The New York Times says Casa de L’Orxata is the best horchata in Valencia , and I can vouch wholeheartedly for that statement. Their version is organic and just the right amount of sweet. Plus, it’s conveniently located at Mercado Colón. Just don’t ask how many times I went there. We’re looking at double digits, easily.

Conveniently located in the center of town, Santa Catalina is also the oldest horchatería around. It’s a close second to Casa de L’Orxata and is worth visiting at least once, if not for its historical significance and colorful décor. Tips for Eating in Valencia (and in Spain)

  • The Spaniards pretty much eat all day – five meals a day including snacks. Lunch is the main and heaviest meal and is oftentimes 2 or 3 courses. Dinner usually consists of lighter fare such as tapas or pintxos.
  • Lunchtime is usually between 2 pm – 4 pm and is a long affair (1-2 hours). This is the best time to try some of the more expensive restaurants as many places have a menu del dia (menu of the day) that includes 2-3 courses for a set price.
  • Most restaurants won’t open for dinner until 7 pm at the absolute earliest but most Spaniards don’t eat until after 9 pm. Lots of restaurants even close between 5 pm and 7 pm.
  • If the restaurant you’re at is serving paella for dinner, it’s probably touristy. That’s not necessarily a bad thing but just know that Spaniards take the “no heavy food at dinner” rule very seriously.
  • Service in Valencia (and Spain in general) is not overly attentive, especially compared to the U.S. They’re pretty hands-off as far as service goes.

Phew. I know, this list is extensive. But hey, I wasn’t kidding when I called this the ultimate guide to the best restaurants in Valencia. Happy eating!

The food looks delish! And good on you for being open to veggie fare 😉 Fellow meat eater here but I usually consume carne (note Spanish 😉 3-5 times monthly. Because wifey has been a vegetarian for 11 years. And I usually follow her lead. Amazing too: when you go to a REAL vegetarian or vegan restaurant – you will find these easily in a place like NYC – you will drop $30 to $50 for a meal for 2 and enjoy vegetarian, or outright vegan, that tastes almost EXACTLY like meat. From a former meat lover, the vegan bacon and cheddar burgers are astoundingly authentic, like a damn fine bacon cheddar burger….almost shockingly! Which is why they are $18 in some restaurants LOL. But worth every freaking cent.

Thanks for sharing!

I KNOW. I have a lot of friends who are vegan / vegetarian and it always astounds me how expensive the food is at these restaurants. That being said, the food can be hit and miss but when I do find a good place, I’m always really impressed.

Thumbs up. 2 years later 😉

Thanks Ryan!

Ummm.. Aquarium and La Peseta look amazing. Also, yes, all the tapas and coffee I can get my hands on and I’d be a happy girl. THat looks like a stunningly delicious trip. ^^

Yesssss so delicious! I’m so glad my friend took me to La Peseta. I would have never found it without him! You can’t go wrong with Spanish food 🙂

Wow — this all looks amazing. I waitressed for a bit at a Spanish restaurant in the states and I remember our patatas bravas was my favorite appetizer — so I’d love to try that! But wow — the Spanish tortillas sound and look amazing, too! 🙂

Mmmmm I miss patatas bravas so much! There aren’t many Spanish places in LA unfortunately. But yeah all the food there is so good! I definitely miss it.

Yummm, these places look delicious! I would love to go around and spend the time exploring all of these hidden gems in Valencia. I have been to Spain twice but never made it to Valencia.

It took me 3 trips until I finally made it to Valencia, so I understand! it’s such an underrated and vibrant city though – I hope you get a chance to go soon 🙂

I loved Valencia and did not spend enough time there. Hopefully I’ll be back soon and I’ll be able to try your suggestions — these look great!

I hope you get a chance to go back sometime! Most people only go for a few days but it’s truly an amazing city!

Loads of great dining suggestions! I love horchata and would definitely taste test each and every single drink.

Thanks! And yes orxata is soooo good! I became a bit of an addict :p

My goodness… I’m salivating reading this post!! I’l definitely have to hit up at least 5 of these when we go. If we’re short on time and can only visit TWO, which two would you recommend?!

Oooh that’s SUCH a hard question! I would say La Pilareta for Spanish / Valencian food and either Crudo Bar (not super Spanish but amazing seafood) or Canalla Bistro for upscale fusion food. Also, I’m so jealous you’re going! You’re going to love it. Be sure to check out the ultimate travel guide I just published when planning your itinerary :). Happy travels! https://passportandplates.com/destination-guides/ultimate-valencia-travel-guide/

ALL of it looks amazing!! I’m drooling already … I need to go back and visit all of these restaurants (except the Santa Catalina, I’ve been there already!). I really really really want the octopus!! 🙂

The octopus was heavenly! I’m drooling just thinking about it. You need to go back and eat your way through the city – so many good places!

This is such a great wrap up Sally, and as I read through them all, I have come to the conclusion that I couldn’t possibly choose a favourite. I could rule out the coffee places as I’m not a coffee drinker (although I’m quite sure my husband would be in for those 🙂 ) There is so much to love about Spanish food. After I was in Spain, I went to a cooking class back home with a well know expat Spanish chef and bought his hugely expensive book (the moment took over me 🙂 ) I think Canella would be at the top of my list.

Thanks so much Kerri :). I know what you mean – even now I couldn’t choose a favorite! Spanish food is just too good. Just out of curiosity – did that chef happen to be Papa Serra Jr? I’ve been eying his book (Papalosophy) and am thinking of buying it!

Those clochinas look SO delicious! I am practically drooling!

They were SO GOOD and I normally don’t like mussels!

Two weeks ago I met up with some friends in Chicago and ate at a tapas place – they lived in Spain for half a year and talked about patatas bravas like it was the best thing in the world. We had some at the restaurant but it wasn’t the same. Have you had this and where in Valencia is the best spot to find some?

I looooove patatas bravas! They really are the best. I have yet to find a good place in the US that makes a good but my favorite places for bravas in Valencia are La Pilareta and Cafe Infanta. If you go, I highly recommend those places 🙂

I love when a destination starts to become all about the food – sometimes those sneak up on you! I’ve not been to Spain yet, but I always hear nothing but great things about Spanish food! Trying orxata just climbed its way to the top of my eating list since I have a massive sweet tooth! I’m simultaneously drooling and trying to convince my husband that Spain needs to happen ASAP. Ha!

Haha same…although I try to make most destinations about food :p. You have to go to Spain and try the food. There are so many good eats! Go go go!!

Wow amazing!! I absolutely LOVE Spanish food and although I haven’t been to Valencia yet, I definitely plan to and now I’m drooling just thinking about it. Thanks for sharing, pinning for later! 🙂

Me tooooo. I could eat Spanish food everyday! I hope you get a chance to visit Valencia soon!

That is a big list, and I’m hungry now 🙁 I want to go back home (anywhere in Spain) and have a little bit of this and that. Don’t get me wrong, I love it but I “hate” you

Haha Spain is the best as is Spanish food. Not going to lie, when I was writing this, I hated me a little too :p

I loooove this post. I spent a few days in Valencia this past spring and we ate our way through that city haha. So excited to see Ubik and Dulce de Leche made your list too! We had breakfast at Dulce every day <3

Thanks Sarah! And yessss Valencia has SO much good food! I’m glad I made it to Dulce – it was closed all summer and I finally visited near the end of my trip. SO delicious!

It’s an excellent article. Much useful information

Santiago Calatrava’s Palace of Arts and Sciences.

A local’s guide to Valencia: home of paella, one of Europe’s best food markets and a unique green space

Architect and graphic artist Juan Suay on the city’s rainbow-coloured market, bistros, bars and its unifying riverbed greenbelt

The Valencia region is well known for its citrus fruit, seafood and rice, but “gastronomy” has grown fast here in recent years. Compared with my girlfriend’s home town in France, though, a great meal isn’t madly expensive. A huge shellfish fideuà – a Valencian paella made with pasta instead of rice – costs €10.50 at Restaurante Yuso in the old city.

More often, we’ll go for tapas on the terraces in the Benimaclet district, near the university. La Negri opened two years ago and does Valencian specialities such as ham croquetas and truffled eggs, but the cooking isn’t all orthodox: they also experiment with red-shrimp gyoza and hoisin-beef bao .

Mid-morning, people stop for almuerzo , our version of brunch, dating from when workers needed a break from the fields. I usually have a pastry with a rum-spiked coffee we call cremaet .

Inspiration

Music has an emotional hold over Valencians, and everyone can appreciate it as it’s affordable. On Sunday mornings new bands will play free live shows at bandstands in parks such as Viveros/Jardins del Real and at La Pérgola at the marina. And a lot of bars host jam sessions: on Monday nights La Vitti invites instructors from the Valencia campus of Boston’s Berklee College of Music on stage (the €5 entry includes a beer).

Another of my favourite venues is Festinar , a cafe in El Cabanyal, an old fishermen’s district by the beach, known for colourful tiles on its buildings. Festinar puts on Thursday-night jazz concerts with pizza and beer: book on Instagram .

Neighbourhood

Valencia’s famous Mercado Central.

Valencia is a great city for cycling, so hire a bike and visit Ruzafa, a barrio just south of the neoclassical bullring . You will probably recognise Ruzafa from photographs of the covered produce market, with its rainbow-coloured window louvres , though it’s better known for its small bistros and bars, and for the vintage shops on Carrer de Cadis. There’s a calmer vibe around here than in the centre, which can get chaotic, and it has become so cool since it started gentrifying 15 years ago. The cafes seem to compete for Instagrammers, and every corner has a terrace for after-work cocktails – I like Cafe Tula for its ginebra (gin) list.

A view of Valencia from the Serranos Gate.

Green space

After floods practically destroyed Valencia in 1957, the city diverted the course of the Turia River, leaving the old riverbed that ran through the centre of the city empty and derelict. At one point the government wanted to turn it into a highway, but the community protested – it was amazing to see the power for change.

In the 1980s a massive landscaping effort began, and now the entire city centre is united by this green belt. Keep your hire bike and follow a route through the gardens , which run for six miles. At their eastern end is the famous City of Arts and Sciences , a complex of ultra-modern concert halls and museums designed by local architect Santiago Calatrava .

Valencians divide their nights into three parts: a post-work drink, then dinner, then serious drinking. It’s easy to dip into any of these, but I usually go out after work and stay out. We do have a late-night scene, though the clubs play mostly commercial European dance music and mediocre techno. The best venue by a mile is Barraca in Sueca, a small town 20 miles away in Albufera natural park . It’s reachable by bus, train or taxi, with beachy nightlife nearby before you head to the club – well worth the journey for a Berlin-style techno night.

Hotel Marqués House (doubles from €125) is in a restored manor in a central location. The bar – designed by local ceramic maker Lladró – makes a powerful agua de Valéncia , the city cocktail, with gin, vodka, cava and fresh orange juice.

Juan Suay moved to Valencia five years ago . His computer graphics practice, Quatre Caps , contributed to Valencia 360 – an exhibition to launch the city as World Design Capital 2022

Best Tapas in Valencia

Valencia isn’t necessarily known as the area in the country with the best tapas in Spain (that title arguably goes to Andalusia), but I can honestly say that the quality and variety of the food in Valencia , including its tapas, has amazed me ever since moving here.

The food scene is seriously good here and you’ll find a ton of Spanish favorites or even twists on traditional tapas done very, very well.

What this means though is that the list below isn’t necessarily all tapa options that are exclusively from Valencia – at least not all of them. But, for me, they should be considered must-dos for your visit to the city to really see the best of the best of the Valencian tapas scene.

1. Croquetas

Croquetas are a must-try when in Valencia. These heavenly little bites are crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, made from a mixture of béchamel sauce, meat or fish, and breadcrumbs.

They’re fried to perfection, creating a crunchy exterior that gives way to a luscious, melt-in-your-mouth filling. Croquetas come in various flavors, such as jamón (ham), bacalao (cod), or setas (mushrooms), so there’s sure to be one that suits your taste buds!

2. Gambas al Ajillo

If you’re a fan of garlic, gambas al ajillo is the tapa for you! This delectable dish features succulent shrimp sautéed in a garlicky olive oil, infused with a hint of spicy red pepper flakes.

The mouthwatering aroma of gambas al ajillo is sure to draw you in, and the bold flavors will have you craving more. Don’t forget to grab some crusty bread to sop up the delicious oil at the bottom of the dish!

3. Sepia a la Plancha

Sepia a la plancha is a popular tapa in Valencia that seafood lovers will adore. This dish consists of tender, grilled cuttlefish seasoned with salt, pepper, and a squeeze of fresh lemon.

The cuttlefish is cooked on a hot griddle, giving it a slightly charred exterior while retaining its juicy, tender interior. The simplicity of sepia a la plancha allows the delicate flavors of the cuttlefish to shine, making it a true delight for your taste buds.

4. Boquerones en Vinagre

For those who enjoy zesty, tangy flavors, boquerones en vinagre is a must-try tapa in Valencia. This dish features fresh anchovies marinated in a mixture of vinegar, olive oil, and garlic, creating a wonderfully sharp and bright flavor.

The anchovies are typically served chilled, accompanied by chopped parsley and minced garlic to enhance their taste. Boquerones en vinagre aren’t for everyone (although, personally, they’re one of my favorites) but for those who do, it’s a refreshing and invigorating tapa that’s perfect for enjoying on a warm Valencian day.

No tapas experience in Valencia would be complete without trying some exquisite jamón. This Spanish cured ham is thinly sliced and served as is, allowing you to fully appreciate its complex, savory flavors.

Jamón comes in different varieties, with Jamón Ibérico de Bellota being the most prized for its exceptional taste and quality. Savor each delicate slice as it melts in your mouth, and you’ll quickly understand why jamón is considered a national treasure in Spain.

6. Tabla de Queso

If you’re a cheese aficionado, a tabla de queso (cheese board) is an essential tapa to try in Valencia. This enticing platter features a selection of regional Spanish cheeses, ranging from the buttery and mild to the robust and tangy.

You’ll have the opportunity to sample classics like Manchego, Cabrales, and Mahón, each offering a distinct flavor and texture that will delight your senses. Pair your cheese board with some fruity membrillo (quince paste) or Marcona almonds for a match made in heaven!

7. Berenjenas a la Miel

Restaurants you can’t miss in Valencia

Information

Valencia offers the epitome of what is known as Mediterranean cuisine. Its ovens produce a clever fusion of all the local produce, mostly coming from the vegetable patch and the Mediterranean. With such an incredible selection of ingredients, it’s no wonder that so many Valencian restaurants are so successful, and that some of them even appear on lists of the best restaurants in the country.

If you’re looking for the neighbourhood with the highest concentration of good restaurants, you won’t have to go far from the historic centre to find many of them. But L’Albufera and the coastal area are also exceptional, above all in the area surrounding the port , the Passeig Marítim and the beach of El Saler . Last but not least, there are a lot of up and coming spots in the zone of Russafa .

The best restaurants in Valencia

Valencian restaurants serve more than just paella. They’re all about creativity and practically venerate the local produce. This is why so many Valencian restaurants are ranked among the top eateries in Spain. The following are just a few of the very best:

  • Senyoret (Av. Francia, 11): Quality ingredients, tradition and passion are the three elements that define this elegant restaurant located in Hotel Barceló Valencia. Its à la carte menu hits a perfect balance between the traditional flavours of the Mediterranean and the modern vibe of the local area, next to the stunning and ultra-modern City of Arts and Sciences .
  • Ricard Camarena (Avinguda Burjasot, 54 – Bombas Gens Centre d’Art): It has two stars as of 2019. Camarena is one of these chefs who know how to soak up world flavours, and then revisit local Valencian and Mediterranean cuisine. Find dishes as excellent as courgette flowers filled with lobster mousseline.

Barceló Valencia

  • Opposite the City of Arts and Sciences
  • Ideal for business or leisure trips
  • Ultra-comfortable B-Rooms
  • Free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel
  • Sucede (Almirall, 14): This restaurant, with Miguel Ángel Mayor at the helm, goes right back to the origins of Valencian cuisine in the Roman, Arab and Christian civilisations. It only uses ingredients that were present in Europe before the exploration of the Americas.
  • El Poblet (Carrer de Correus, 8): This place is inspired by another great of Spanish cuisine, Quique Dacosta , but is headed by chef Luis Valls , who blends his own ideas with Dacosta’s. The results are surprising dishes like a cuba libre of foie gras with lemon frosting and rocket, or a soup of emulsified green tomatoes with fresh herbs and prawns.
  • Riff (Comte d’Altea, 18): The German Bernd H. Knöller , settled in Valencia for many years, is in charge of the ovens here. This chef creates an interesting fusion between different European cuisine, using local produce. A good example of his culinary philosophy is the meloso rice with brewer’s yeast, mushrooms and peanuts.

Classic restaurants

Valencia has restaurants that have been operating for over 100 years. These are places that are recognised for having preserved their essence over the decades. Many dishes born in these kitchens have found their way into the recipe books of countless houses in the region. Some of the ones that most stand out are:

  • La Pepica (Passeig de Neptú, 6): This place has a history of more than 120 years, and played host to Ernest Hemingway himself, as well as Joaquín Sorolla . Its speciality is rice dishes, and the star of the show is the arroz Pepica , a shelled seafood paella.
  • El Gastrónomo (Avinguda Primat Reig, 149): Classic haute cuisine, with their steak tartare and hake with prawns being the star turn. They also serve rice dishes, as you’d expect from a classic Valencian restaurant, and delicious crêpes Suzette that they assemble at the table.
  • La Herrradura (Pavia, 32, Módulo 2): This place serves local Valencian cuisine . It opened its doors in 1995, right on the Passeig Marítim . This is one of the few spots where you’ll find the Valencian oyster , as well as a profusion of vegetables grown on local soil.
  • Eladio (Xiva, 40): This is a classic that’s a little out of the ordinary, as it serves Galician food . It’s top quality, as the produce is shipped in from the north-west every day. Don’t miss out on the desserts.
  • Zacarías (Ciscar, 16): There are two options here, the main menu or the tapas version, which both have a great selection. The produce is always of the highest quality, with a special focus on seafood and fish.

A few budget restaurants

It’s not that difficult to find somewhere in Valencia where you can get lunch or dinner at a reasonable price. There are plenty of restaurants that offer menus and set menus at very reasonable prices, without the quality of the produce served suffering. These are a few of them:

  • Punt i Apart (Mestre Bellver, 30-36): Almost everyone comes here for the baguettes, but they also have a very reasonably priced tasting menu, which focuses on seafood.
  • A tu gusto (Marqués de Lozoya, 4, Ciudad de las Ciencias y las Artes, bajo): This is cuisine with a good dose of creativity and Mediterranean influence. They’re always very focused on seasonal produce. Their cellar includes a wide selection of national wines.
  • La Bodegueta Nou Moles (Pintor Stolz, 72): This is particularly good when the summer rolls around, as the terrace is lovely. It’s best to opt for the Mediterranean tapas. They have a good selection of wines considering the reasonable prices.
  • Asador Coco Pazzo (Comte d’Altea, 51): Yes, this is an Argentinian grill. But it still tips its hat to local cuisine, such as its delicious grilled fish. They also make fresh pasta every day.

Other good restaurants

There’s a huge variety of restaurants in Valencia. Relatively new on the Valencian gastronomic scene is the Mercado de San Valero (Gran Vía Germanías, 21). Conceived as a street food market, there are ten stalls here offering different cuisines (from Italian to succulent meat, as well as sweet treats and cakes), a bar and a specialised wine bar.

The Peruvian restaurant Vuelve Carolina (Correus, 8) is chic with extremely modern décor. You can opt to eat at the bar or at a table, and the menus will vary accordingly, but the common theme is the delicious fusion Peruvian cuisine.

Lastly, a super informal option is El Almacén (Sueca, 41), which claims to serve “new rustic cuisine”. The idea is to attract diners with classic flavours but use the revolutionary techniques that characterise new Spanish cuisine. You can tell that the two chefs responsible, Raimón Moreno and Vanina Vila, were introduced to haute cuisine by the great Quique Dacosta .

This Charming Lake Town Is Known as the 'Newport of the Midwest' — How to Visit

Here's how to plan the perfect trip to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Best Hotels and Resorts

  • Best Things to Do

Best Restaurants

Best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

Travel Wisconsin

Lake Geneva, known as the "Hamptons of Chicago" and the "Newport of the Midwest," is one of the best small towns in Wisconsin. One of three main communities on Geneva Lake, this posh yet approachable resort town is famous for its Gilded Age estates built by notable Chicago families. It also has a world-renowned observatory, a winding 21-mile shore path around the lake, a famous mail boat cruise, and many independent eateries.

Here's everything you need to know to plan a trip to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Stay at the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa, located on 1,300 rolling acres just outside of town.
  • Check out the Yerkes Observatory, known as the birthplace of modern astrophysics.
  • Join the famous Mailboat Tour as it delivers mail to lake homes via boat.
  • Enjoy a meal at Pier 290.
  • Visit during the summer for gorgeous weather perfect for lake days.

Grand Geneva Resort & Spa

A former Playboy Club, the recently renovated Grand Geneva draws inspiration from native Wisconsinite Frank Lloyd Wright's signature architectural approach. This grand resort boasts 358 guest rooms and over 60,000 square feet of meeting and event space on 1,300 rolling, hilly acres outside town. Three onsite restaurants, a ski hill, and a golf course round out the amenities. One of Travel + Leisure ’s best Midwest resorts for a fall getaway , this AAA Four-Diamond operation is an excellent base for exploring Lake Geneva any time of year.

Maxwell Mansion

Mere blocks from downtown Lake Geneva, this boutique property has two distinct vibes: the lovingly restored historic mansion and the equestrian-chic Carriage House and Stables. Maxwell’s has six rooms in the main mansion, 14 in the carriage house, and seven suites and one standard room in the stables. A heated outdoor pool and three distinct watering holes — a speakeasy, a craft cocktail bar, and a seasonal outdoor tiki bar — set this unique spot apart from typical chain hotels.

According to Barb Krause, publisher of At The Lake Magazine , a quarterly print publication about the Geneva Lake area, “Maxwell’s owners, Luke and Monica, have a wealth of hospitality experience, and it shows in their creative décor and special events.” Krause suggests ordering a specialty cocktail at the Apothecary Bar and listening to live music. “There are so many cozy corners in the mansion and around the property to sit and have a conversation,” she adds.

The Abbey Resort

In the enclave of Fontana-on-Geneva Lake, The Abbey is billed as the only full-service lakeside accommodation. “The Abbey has undergone a beautiful renovation, and the property shines from its lakefront location," Krause says. "You can easily walk to nearby shops and restaurants in the village of Fontana."

With 334 guest rooms, including suites and villas, accommodations can meet your needs no matter who you travel with. Grand Geneva Resort and Spa concierge Sarah Hill notes that the 35,000-square-foot Avani Spa is particularly excellent. Other amenities include two full-service eateries, a coffee shop and bar, indoor and outdoor pools, a cinema and entertainment center, bikes you can borrow, and marina access.

Lake Lawn Resort

In the greater Lake Geneva area, find Lake Lawn Resort . "Lake Lawn Resort is a great place to spend the weekend, with a beautiful setting on Delavan Lake. There's quite a bit to do: You can golf, get a treatment at the spa, and take a boat ride. Plus, there's a newly designed restaurant, 1878, with lake views," Krause shares. Lake Lawn's 250 acres include two miles of Delavan Lake shoreline and 271 guest rooms with a balcony or patio.

Best Things to Do

Geneva lake short path.

One of Geneva Lake's main attractions is the public walking path. Krause explains that “the Shore Path is an amazing piece of living history. The path encircles the entire lake and is nearly 22 miles around, so most people walk just a portion of it at a time.”

You can see historic turn-of-the-century estates up close and modern new homes. “You walk through the lakefront yards of these homes. We don’t know of any other lake in the United States with this type of public access,” Krause says.

Black Point Estate and Gardens

"Set on the highest natural point of Geneva Lake, Black Point Estate is a historic house museum on the lake's southern shore," Hill says. The previous owners donated this summer residence to the state of Wisconsin for public enjoyment, and it's now recognized for its architectural significance on the National Historic Register. You can only access the Queen Anne-style home via Geneva Cruise Line's 3.5-hour private tour.

Yerkes Observatory

Yerkes Observatory , the birthplace of modern astrophysics, is one of the country's most important ground-based observatories. And it almost became condos. Thankfully, a group of dedicated locals and summer residents intervened to save the storied structure from demolition.

Krause expands: “Yerkes Observatory is housed in a grand, historic building with beautiful architecture … we are so grateful that it has been saved from the wrecking ball and development, and now open to the public for tours and events. Einstein was here! I’ve been on the tour a few times, and I love seeing the telescope and hearing about our local contribution to astronomic discoveries.”

Mail Boat Run

Geneva Lake is one of only a handful of places in the U.S. that still offers mail service by boat. Join the 2.5-hour Mail Boat Run for an iconic area activity. The boat traverses the lake and makes about 50 mail drops.

“I’ve been on the mail boat tour several times. It looks so challenging to jump on and off the piers! But it’s a lot of fun to watch, and the residents get into it, too, waiting on the pier with kids or their dogs," Krause says. "Between stops, the mail jumper tells you about our lakefront history.” It's only offered in the summer from June 15 through Sept. 15, so plan your visit accordingly.

Big Foot Beach State Park

This 271-acre state park boasts five miles of hiking trails, a family campground, a picnic area, a swimming beach, and a playground. For excellent fishing, visit the on-site lagoon, a replica of Geneva Lake.

It's a special spot for Krause. “We originally moved to Lake Geneva because my dad became superintendent at Big Foot Beach. So we grew up enjoying the park as a family, taking walks, grilling out, and learning to cross-country ski in the winter,” she says. "Today, I take walks through the park with friends. Visitors love the open areas for big picnics, just across the street from the beach.”

Geneva Lake

One of Wisconsin's largest and deepest inland lakes, Geneva Lake is renowned for its cleanliness and gorgeous aquamarine hue — take advantage of it if you visit in the summer. Clearwater Outdoor offers kayak and standup paddleboard rentals. Hill suggests renting a motorboat, too. "It's a pretty large lake, about 5,000 acres, so renting a boat allows you to see more than paddling can. People love to rent pontoons, especially families," she says.

The Lake Geneva area is a golfer's delight. The two most notable spots are the Grand Geneva, which has two courses, and the Geneva National, which has three courses (one is reserved for members). If you can’t swing a tee time at these elite courses, plenty of other options exist.

Oakfire Pizza

Oakfire Pizza is a must-visit for its wood-fired pizzas and inventive pasta. “I love Oakfire Pizza — the rustic décor, lake views, and the open floor plan. The bartenders craft creative cocktails, and we always share cheese curds, salad, and pizza," says Krause.

Helmed by Chef Simon Cumming, Sopra in Lake Geneva embraces Italian-American influences and seasonal products. “This is our top fine dining option right now. The food is fantastic, very eclectic," Hill says.

Simple Food Group Café, Market, and Bakery

“ Simple Café is perfect for breakfast or brunch. It’s our go-to when we have guests from out of town because there’s something for every foodie and dietary restriction, and the menu changes seasonally,” says Krause. The cafe focuses on artisan products from southeastern Wisconsin producers.

Located on the Williams Bay side of the lake, Pier 290 provides an outdoor bar, sandy beach, fire pits, and a beautiful backdrop for a waterfront meal. "One of my favorite spots is Pier 290, the only restaurant directly on Geneva Lake. And it's actually built next to the working shipyard of Gage Marine, which just celebrated its 150th anniversary on the lake," Hill says.

Krause agrees: "Pier 290 is our special occasion destination, and by that, I mean birthdays, good days at work, or just a random Wednesday. We prefer the outdoor and tented seating, even in the winter. They have live music nearly every weekend, and the gift shop is not to be missed."

Though there's reason to visit Lake Geneva year-round, the traditional summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day) is the most popular as the weather is warm and kids are out of school. But if you don't have to worry about school schedules, the spring and fall shoulder seasons offer mild weather and more affordable prices. The Geneva Lakes Boat Show at the Abbey , a showcase of vintage and classic boats from around the country, is popular in the fall.

Winter is also a special time to visit. According to Hill, “Our busiest weekend of the year, and one of the most fun, is Winterfest weekend.” Every year, during the first week of February, Lake Geneva hosts the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Championship. “Teams fly in from all over the country, and they craft these massive, massive forms [in] downtown Lake Geneva … it is just a hoot,” Hill says.

The snowy season also allows for Nordic skiing, downhill skiing , ice fishing, and ice boating, when sailboats on metal runners glide on the frozen lake. “Hanging out at Chuck’s on a Saturday afternoon in the winter to watch ice boats is a rite of passage,” Hill says.

Lake Geneva is 80 miles from Chicago and 40 miles from Milwaukee. If you're flying in from outside the region, O’Hare International Airport (ORD) or Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) are your best bets, though MKE is preferable — it's closer to Lake Geneva and you'll encounter less traffic than if you drive from Illinois.

The Lake Geneva area doesn't have public transportation, so you need a car. Rent a vehicle at MKE or O’Hare . Milwaukee earns convenience points for an on-site rental car operation, while O’Hare provides free, 24-hour shuttle service to the rental car parking structure.
