Dressing like a tourist is easy! A bright Hawaiian shirt is a classic look, but neon prints and souvenir t-shirts are also great shirt options. For bottoms, definitely go with khaki shorts or cargo shorts. Slip into a pair of white crew socks and strap your sandals over them to create an iconic tourist vibe. Don’t forget accessories like fanny packs, leis, straw hats, and multiple cameras to tie your look together!

Things You Should Know

  • Wearing a Hawaiian shirt is a classic way to stand out as a tourist. You could also pick a graphic T-shirt or a shirt with a loud, vibrant print.
  • Go for bottoms like khakis or cargo shorts. For a more tropical vacation vibe, opt for a colorful sarong.
  • Hold your items in a fanny pack and throw on some socks with sandals to complete the look.

Step 1 Slip on a bright Hawaiian shirt.

  • For example, try a shirt with a bright red and purple floral print.
  • If you can find something with neon colors, go with that!
  • A trick with florals is to choose them according to your height--for a petite size person, choose small floral prints; for average height, choose a medium floral print; and for plus size, larger or tall, choose a large floral print.

Step 2 Try a tank top or shirt that promotes a popular vacation spot instead.

  • You could also go with something that promotes a popular company that caters to tourists, like Señor Frog’s or Hard Rock Café.

Step 3 Wear a T-shirt that advertises your high school or college sports team.

  • Bonus points if the name of your hometown is written right on the shirt!

Step 4 Opt for any shirt with a vibrant print.

  • Try an over-sized plaid button-up with short sleeves in the brightest colors you can find.
  • A neon tie-dye top is also a great choice.

Step 5 Wear a swim suit top as outerwear to a costume party.

  • Wrap a sarong around your waist and slip into a pair of flip-flops to complete your outfit.

Step 1 Wear khaki shorts for a classic take on the look.

  • Pair your khaki shorts with an oversized Hawaiian shirt for an iconic tourist look.

Step 2 Put on a pair of high-waisted “mom-style” bottoms instead.

  • Tuck a pink tank top with “Hawaii” scrawled on the front into a pair of mom-style, knee-length khaki shorts and you’re all set!

Step 3 Wear cargo pants if you want to include lots of accessories.

  • You can go with any color, but khaki or tan cargos would be very authentic.
  • Cargo skirts are another option you might prefer. Just be aware that they're not the most flattering style for skirts because their bulky pockets stick out. You'll also need to opt for a top that hits at your waist, you don't want to add bulk by tucking things in.

Step 4 Wrap a colorful sarong around your waist for a tropical vacation vibe.

  • Strap on a second fanny pack for extra oomph.
  • If you can’t get your hands on a fanny pack, an overstuffed backpack will also do the trick. [4] X Research source

Step 2 Wear white crew socks with sandals or loafers.

  • Strap on an old-school camcorder for a retro tourist vibe.
  • Keep one of your cameras in your hands at all times. Photograph everything excessively, of course!

Step 4 Top off your outfit with a huge straw or safari hat.

If you want to dress like a tourist, stick to obvious, flashy clothes that peg you as a foreigner. Go for a short-sleeved button-up shirt with a floral print or a vibrant pattern on it. Or, wear a souvenir t-shirt that promotes the location you’re in, like one that says, “I love New York.” Pair your loud shirt with khaki or beach shorts to go full tourist. If you’re near the beach, wander around in a bikini and sarong. You can also add a tourist accessory, like a fanny pack, a camera around your neck, oversized sunglasses, or a big safari hat, to complete your look. Travel + Leisure / Kristin Kempa

You may have a designated travel sweatshirt or a favorite pair of shoes to wear on flights — but what about other essentials, like pants, jackets, T-shirts, dresses, and pajamas? If you prioritize comfort in transit, it’s time to revamp your travel wardrobe to ensure every trip is a cozy one. Lucky for you, we editors at Travel + Leisure rounded up a few of our favorite comfy clothing items we always wear on the road and in the sky.

From impossibly soft lounge sets to what we believe are the world’s comfiest jeans, we've combed our closets for those few items we tend to wear every time we travel. Our list includes favorites from Lululemon, Patagonia, Lilly Pulitzer, and more, so whether you prefer to travel in loose-fitting loungewear or more compressive clothing, you’re sure to find something you love below.

lululemon Define Jacket Luon

We’ve all been on a flight that’s chilly enough for some extra layers but too warm for a heavy coat or sweatshirt. That’s why we always pack this comfy, light jacket in our carry-on. Not only is it incredibly sleek and stylish thanks to its slim fit, but it’s also super soft, stretchy, breathable, and easy to move in. The sleeves even feature thumbholes and “cuffins” (cuffs that can be folded over your hands) for added warmth. Snag the Define Jacket Luon in eight sizes and five shades including espresso and bone.

“This jacket is essentially my plane uniform — I wear it every single time I fly,” editor Sophie Mendel said. “It's comfy but keeps me looking put-together, plus I can wear it with leggings and sneakers for a super functional, comfortable, and cute transit 'fit. It also has two zippered pockets which are extra-convenient during travel.”

Calia Women's Inspire High Rise 7/8 Legging

Dick's Sporting Goods

Flying in compression leggings is wise, especially for long-haul flights, but some compression leggings tend to squeeze you uncomfortably. That’s never a problem with Calia’s Inspire High Rise 7/8 leggings, though. Boasting subtle compression that molds to your body, the leggings are sure to remain comfy and breathable without sliding down or sagging. They even have unique seam lines that strategically accentuate your curves — though, admittedly,  this is more noticeable in some colors than others. To top it off, we love the way they feel to the touch.

“These Calia leggings are without a doubt the softest pair I own,” associate editor Hillary Maglin said. “I've worn them for everything from yoga classes to grocery runs to a recent 12-hour travel day, and I've remained comfy through it all. The leggings are thick without hindering mobility, and they're compressive without digging into my stomach (something I can't stand). It also doesn't hurt that they have subtle side pockets large enough for my phone. Though I have plenty of black leggings in my wardrobe, I find myself reaching for these ones again and again.”

Commes Des Garçons Play x Converse Chuck Taylor Hidden Heart Low Top Sneakers

It's true: Converse never goes out of style. Conveniently, the sleek sneakers tend to last forever, too, so consider copping a pair of the Converse x Comme des Garçons Play Chuck 70s. They feature the typical silhouette of the brand’s low tops, plus they come in white or black. No matter which color you choose, this particular style also boasts the Comme des Garçons red heart and eyes logo on the side. You can snag these in women’s sizes 5 to 15 and men’s sizes 3 to 13.

“This is my go-to travel shoe because it's comfortable but also dressy enough that I can wear it throughout my trip when I want an elevated sneaker look,” travel editor Susmita Baral said.

Paka Men's Apu Lightweight Puffer

One of our most important tips for traveling in comfort? Dress to avoid freezing or overheating. With this lightweight men’s puffer from Paka, regulating your body temperature is easy. It’s so slim that it looks more like a hoodie than a puffer, but its hidden layers and insulation efficiently lock in warmth. Even if you choose not to wear it in transit, you can effortlessly pack it down into a bag or suitcase.

“This puffer jacket has the warmth of a parka but not the bulkiness, which makes it the perfect outerwear to bring while traveling,” writer Anna Popp said. “It can fit in a suitcase easily and it's also perfectly cozy and warm to wear on an airplane if you need to save extra space. I love that it looks nice while going out in the city on a snowy day, but that it’s also designed to be worn for sportier occasions like skiing, hiking, climbing, or running.”

J. McLaughlin Lowden Jeans

J.McLaughlin

We know, we know — traveling in jeans might as well be a crime. We thought so, too, until we got our hands on J.McLaughlin’s Lowden jeans. The stretchy cotton denim feels more like a soft pair of leggings, and even after long-haul flights, we never felt restricted or uncomfortable in them. The jeans feature a wide-leg slim fit for added mobility and a high waist for comfort and confidence on and off the plane.

“I never thought I would be a jeans person for airplanes but after wearing these on a cross-country flight, I'm a big fan now,” said Popp. “These jeans are super stretchy and roomy, so if (and when) I get bloated while traveling, the high-waist fabric doesn't dig into my stomach or cause me any discomfort. They also look super cute and stylish and can be styled with many different outfits, so I’ve officially added these jeans to my travel wardrobe for every trip.”

Patagonia Women's Nano Puff Jacket

We’re adamant that Patagonia’s Nano Puff is the jacket every traveling woman needs in her wardrobe. It’s lightweight, packable, durable, stylish, warm, windproof, water-resistant — need we go on? Some of our favorite extras are a drawstring hemline to seal in heat and hidden internal pockets. On top of all its functional features, it also comes in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL and 11 colors including buckhorn green, chilled blue, and sandy melon.

“When it comes to packable jackets for women, this one from Patagonia is the best option for virtually any trip,” Popp said. “The design is simple but very functional, and I love being able to wear it for any season. In the winter, it's thin enough to layer for more warmth, but I can wear it as-is during summer camping trips. My outdoor-adventuring family all own Nano puff jackets and they still look as good as new, so I love that they’re built to last – possibly forever – in my opinion.”

Rag & Bone Miramar Jogger

Rag & Bone

These joggers are so stylish, you’d never guess they’re also comfy as can be. Don’t let their denim appearance fool you — they’re actually made of soft cotton terry that provides stellar mobility and comfort. Over the legging look for travel? Throw these on instead, and pair them with a pair of boots or walking shoes and moto jacket for an effortlessly cool look you don’t even have to change out of once you reach your destination.

“These Rag & Bone joggers are simply the best for travel,” editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford said. “I call them ‘faux’ jeans; the fabric looks like it’s a regular old pair of denim, but surprise — they have the softness and ease of a pair of sweats. Ideal for a plane ride or even a long day out on a tour, these are the ultimate pants that blend function, form, and style.”

Forme Power Bra

In need of a comfy new sports bra to keep everything in place on your next journey? Our editors (and a certain blonde popstar) are all about the Forme Power Bra. It’s comfy, cute, compressive, and most impressively, designed to zap bad posture. The wide straps take pressure off your shoulders and back, while the comfortable fit promotes proper body alignment, quick recovery, and overall health. We even love all seven colors it comes in — especially rosé and ecru.

"As a bra-needer and someone who really shouldn't be traveling without one, I absolutely hate wearing something bulky while I fly,” associate photo editor Alessandra Amodio said. “My go-to is the Forme Power Bra. Not only is it incredibly comfortable and made of high-quality material, but it’s actually FDA-registered to correct posture and improve your body alignment. Now I fly comfortably and my neck, shoulders and back feel so much better. I just throw on a cute open button down, pair it with the Ergo Shorts or Sculpt+ Leggings , and look chic and put-together while traveling. (This is also what Taylor Swift wore in her Eras Tour rehearsals according to a photo from her Time Person of the Year profile — if it's good enough for Taylor, it's good enough for me.)”

Circus by Sam Edelman Zuri Strap Ballet Flat

Circus by Sam Edelman

We love that ballet flats are back — and this strappy style demands to be worn. The low heel and soft interior make them a great, pain-free option for travel while cross straps, buckles, and tiny beaded bows keep things stylish. They come in 11 sizes including half sizes, and 15 unique colors and prints. We recommend the shades dark French macaroon, light wash, and the leopard-printed beige brown.

“Even though you’d think flats would always be a comfortable shoe option, it’s actually surprisingly difficult to find flats that don’t dig into your feet or make your toes all sweaty,” testing editor Jackie Cucco said. “I’ve tried so many pairs that seem comfortable at first, but end up being too rigid and irritating by the end of the day. This is the first pair I’ve found that is soft enough to wear all day long, either with or without socks or tights. They feel like slippers, and they come in more than a dozen colors to match any vibe.”

Black Diamond Notion Pants

Black Diamond

Whether you’re headed to the airport, the trails, or even the gym, the Black Diamond men’s Notion Pants are your best bet for comfort and mobility. Designed with an elastic waist, a drawstring cord, and a loose fit, these pants feel almost like wearing your favorite pair of sweatpants. However, their slim appearance complete with two hand pockets and two rear pockets make them dapper enough to wear to dinner, a show, or even the office. Grab them in a neutral hue like ash or tundra, or opt for a more eye-catching shade like raging sea or burnt Sienna.

“You don't have to be an Alex Honnold–level rock climber to love these super-soft pants,” news director Paul Brady said. “They're comfortable enough for long-haul flights, even in coach, but they've still got a crisp silhouette to keep you looking put-together.”

Lilly Pulitzer Seaview Top & Deri Palazzo Pant Linen Set

Lilly Pulitzer

You can’t go wrong with Lilly Pulitzer, especially when it comes to jetsetting. This breathable, lightweight linen set from the brand is just as soft and cozy as it is cute, so we recommend adding it to your travel wardrobe immediately. The classic, collared button-down is super versatile thanks to cuffable sleeves and a tieable bottom — plus you can turn it into a jacket or cover-up by layering it unbuttoned over literally any other outfit. Snag the ultra-flattering matching pants to complete the look.

“I think the most versatile item to pack on a warm-weather vacay is a white linen button down, and this roomy one from Lilly Pulitzer is good enough to also grab in other colors like spearmint and mulberry,” associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker said. “I’ve worn it unbuttoned over a swimsuit and then slipped on matching palazzo pants — with an irresistible elasticized waist — for dinner alfresco. I personally love the all-white combo for warmer climates but the New Yorker in me would also recommend grabbing the coordinating onyx x onyx set if you can catch it in stock.”

Spanx AirEssentials Wide Leg Pant

There are few things softer than Spanx Air Essentials’ Wide Leg Pants. They feel similar to the brand's sleek and smoothing leggings and shapewear, but they have a relaxed fit rather than a super compressive one. While the pants could certainly be worn as loungewear, they’re also fashionable enough to wear to the airport, a coffee shop, or on an errand run. Though they fit and even look a bit like sweatpants, figure-enhancing contouring on the rear differentiates them from your typical comfy clothing.

“It’s impossible to find a better material than Spanx AirEssentials ,” Parker said. “All pieces feel silky to the touch, hefty enough for a chilly plane cabin, and pretty much impossible to wrinkle. I’m super into wide-leg styles — and need this exact petite option for my 5' 3" frame — and these pants are pretty much a given on my long flights nowadays. Personally, I love the olive-y palm color as an alternative to black or navy, so my only real choice is whether to match them with a crew neck or a sleek half zip instead.”

Pitusa Pima Abaya

If your ideal wardrobe staple is a do-it-all piece, look no further than Pitusa’s Pima Abaya. The cozy caftan is perfect for everything from international flights to pool days to bedtime. That’s thanks to impossibly soft cotton construction, oversized sleeves, and an airy, relaxed fit. There are no buttons, snaps, or drawstrings on this piece, so you’ll never have to worry about uncomfortable digging or fussing with it in order for it to fit right. You can customize your fit upon buying, though, and you can even choose from 15 colors.

“I joke about my ideal wardrobe consisting of a caftan in every color and this floor-length maxi fits perfectly into that vibe,” Parker said. “It can serve as a dress, cover-up, nightgown — pretty much anything, all day, every day in a tropical climate. The lightweight pima cotton is incredibly soft, too, and it comes in petite, standard, and tall options to reduce tailoring needs. I like this exact one because it’s not so sheer that I wouldn’t wear it out to dinner or on the plane but if you’re looking for more of a peekaboo style, you can get the same cut in a burnout fabric instead.”

Mar Soreli Ginger Mary Jane

Mar Soreli

Looking to travel in comfort without sacrificing style? Check out the Ginger Mary Janes by Mar Soreli. Everything from the insole to the strap is ultra-soft and cushioned, plus the buckle and strap are easy to tighten and loosen for a custom fit — or for quickly taking on and off at TSA. They’re even soft to the touch thanks to velvet uppers, and they’re versatile enough to wear with leggings, skirts, dresses, and jeans.

“If you’re someone who wishes slippers were appropriate outdoor shoes, these ballet flats are the next best thing,” Parker said. “The velvet is so cozy but still looks great with anything from plane leggings to a nicer skirt on a night out, with or without socks or tights. And, if you do want to wear them through security (and don’t have TSA PreCheck®), each strap actually has a snap in addition to the buckle adjustment so they’re incredibly quick to slip on and off as needed.”

Allbirds Wool Runners

Allbirds shoes were basically made for travel, and the Men’s Wool Runners are some of our absolute favorites. The inside is actually lined with fine merino wool, making for soft and warm-yet-breathable wear no matter the time of the year. On top of that, the sneakers are equipped with reliable arch support and machine washable fabric. While we wouldn’t recommend them for running, they’re the perfect comfy shoes for pretty much everything else, including walking, hiking, and navigating the airport.

“My husband swears by these comfortable men's walking shoes so much that I ordered a pair of the women's version for myself,” senior editor Kayla Becker said. “And they really deliver. We both love the thick, foamy cushion that keeps our feet supported on long travel days, and they've stood up to everything from 20,000-step jaunts in Iceland to hiking Diamond Head in Hawaii.”

Aday Turn It Up Pants

Tapered trousers are office staples — so if you’re traveling for business, we suggest adding a pair or two of the Aday Turn It Up Pants to your wardrobe. They’re the goes-with-everything piece you’ve been looking for, and their soft, tailored stretch paired with an elastic waistband makes them comfy enough to catch a flight in. The ankle-length pants have a pocket at each hip and are available in a dozen colors.

“As soon as I found these sleek, wrinkle-free travel pants, they became a permanent part of my travel uniform (and I've even written about how all the travel editors I know have them ),” Becker said. “They're not only super comfortable for long-haul flights (I just flew 14 hours in them and felt like I was wearing pajamas), but they also look put-together right off the plane, whether I'm headed to the office or a walking tour. I'd wear them literally anywhere.”

Saucony Endorphin Speed 4

If you’re the type of traveler that likes to workout on the road, Saucony’s Endorphin Speed 4 is the versatile sneaker for you. Not only is it an ideal comfy running shoe, but it’s also lightweight and sleek enough to wear for every other part of your journey, too. Whether you wear it on the plane or to sightsee once you arrive at your destination, you’ll always feel supported in the Speed 4. Choose from five eye-catching colorways and 15 sizes including half-sizes.

“I've been training for the London Marathon, and since I started wearing these sneakers, I haven't had a single ounce of pain in my feet, even on long runs,” senior editorial director Nina Ruggiero said. “They are extremely cushioned yet so lightweight. Even after the race is done, I imagine I might be wearing them on the long flight home to LA.”

Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie

Fundamental Coast

To make the most of the space in your suitcase, you’ll want to prioritize versatile pieces that can do it all. That’s why we love the Fundamental Coast Shorebreak Hoodie so much. It’s perfect for travel days and morning walks near your hotel, but it’s also elevated enough to wear to a cafe, museum, or shops around town. The pullover hoodie has a front pocket, drawstring hood, and slim fit for a more put-together appearance. Grab it in phantom black or storm, which both have a beachy, heathered texture.

“Fundamental Coast has perfected Southern California athleisure, especially for men, and my fiancé lives in the brand's hoodies, shorts, vests, and polos,” Ruggiero said. “The Shorebreak hoodie is especially soft and sleek and works well whether we're out doing something active or going to brunch at a new spot in our beachy LA neighborhood.”

Vuori Cove Funnel Neck Tank

Vuori

This high-necked tank top is so stylish, you’d never guess it’s also comfy enough for exercise, stretching out on a plane, or even napping. Crafted with a soft and stretchy rayon-elastane fabric blend, this top never digs into the skin or feels uncomfortably tight around the neck. While it’s not quite cropped, it’s not too long, either, so it’s likely to complement a variety of bodies and ensembles.

“This super-soft rib knit tank is my go-to running top, but the high neck also gives it some style (in addition to protecting my most sensitive areas from the sun),” Ruggiero said. “I have it in multiple colors, and I've definitely worn the black and tan ones out with friends at night, too.”

Vuori Echo Insulated Vest

Vuori

A reliable vest is essential for travelers — it locks in warmth without causing you to overheat, and it couldn’t be easier to zip on and off. We’re big fans of this one from Vuori for its insulation, water resistance, and easy cleaning. It has zip pockets for your hands or small items, and a subtle collar keeps heat from escaping while allowing your neck total range of motion, irritation-free. To top it off, the vest comes in two stylish shades.

“This lightweight but warm insulated vest has quickly become one of my fiancé's favorite items of clothing,” Ruggiero said. “He wears it on dog walks, weekends, and travel days — it even has pockets.”

Reef Men's Swellsole Cutback Sneaker

It’s no secret that Reef is one of the most trusted rugged shoe brands around, so when it released boat shoes, we were intrigued. It turns out Reef’s boat shoes are just as comfy and long-lasting as the sandals we know and love. The men’s Swellsole Cutback Sneakers are the perfect fusion of classic boat shoes and cushioned sneakers, and they’re perfect for beachy vacations. Wear them from the dock straight to dinner — then keep them on for a busy night of exploring the boardwalk.

“I always thought of Reef for flip-flops, but since my fiancé found their hybrid boat shoes/sneakers, he's bought them in at least three colors,” Ruggiero said. “They're supportive thanks to memory foam, and can be dressed up or down.”

Public Rec All Day Pants

Odds are, you’ve seen these popular pants everywhere from the office to the coffee shop to the airport. That’s because their straight-leg fit and stretchy nylon-spandex fabric move with you rather than tightly confining your waist and legs like other styles. But don’t let their uber-soft texture fool you — these pants are still equipped with two front pockets, two faux back pockets, belt loops, and a zipper fly, so you’ll look and feel just as sophisticated as you are comfortable when you wear these.

“The slacks feel almost like loungewear thanks to their soft nylon-spandex blend,” editor Taylor Fox said. “They're the perfect balance of comfort and style for long flights where you don't want to feel cramped into tight pants, but want to still look put-together when you land. They can also be dressed up or dressed down for added versatility no matter what you have on the agenda.”

ManMade Boxers and T-shirt Bundle

ManMade Brand

One can never have too many basics, and we love this three-piece pack from ManMade. Each set comes with two pairs of black boxer briefs and one white T-shirt. Made of high-quality modal, spandex, and Pima cotton, the briefs and tee are guaranteed to remain soft, breathable, moisture-wicking, and anti-chafing through everything — even long-haul flights and airport sprints. To ensure your comfort, the bundle comes in six sizes ranging from small to 3XL.

“My husband packs about a dozen pairs of boxers and undershirts for a weeklong trip and his absolute favorites come from ManMade,” Fox said. “They're lightweight and breathable with a buttery soft material that doesn't add a bulky layer under clothing. All of their items contain the perfect amount of stretch as well without allowing the clothing to ride up or bunch in uncomfortable places whether he's hiking, riding his bike, or preparing for a long flight.”

The Mate Organic Waffle Knit Joggers

There’s something so luxurious about a good waffle weave. Designed with a relaxed fit and buttery soft texture, these Organic Waffle Knit Joggers by Mate are no exception. They’re made of 100 percent organic cotton, crafted with elastic at the waist and ankles, and equipped with one pocket on the back right side. The cozy joggers come in four neutral colors (jet black, bone, lilac, and bark) and five sizes. You can also drop the matching Organic Waffle Long Sleeve Shirt in your cart to complete the look.

“If I could replace all of my joggers with these comfortable, waffle-knit pants I would,” writer Ali Domrongchai said. “They have the perfect amount of stretch that lends itself well to long travel days, and thanks to its textured design, they not only feel good, but look good, too. In fact, since I've been wearing these cozy knit joggers, a few of my friends have snagged a pair as well because of how much I rave about them.”

Tips for Buying Comfortable Travel Clothes

Consider the material.

When traveling, it’s important to choose clothing that’s as comfortable and low-maintenance as possible. That said, we recommend clothes made of soft, sweat-wicking, and breathable fabrics such as cotton, polyester, linen, or wool. It’s also wise to opt for wrinkle-resistant materials like nylon and spandex to keep you looking fresh and put-together.

Look for travel features

Though it may feel unnecessary, we guarantee you’ll end up thanking yourself for buying pants, dresses, and bags with lots of extra pockets. Additionally, temperature-regulating clothes can come in pretty handy when you’re on the road — so consider adding clothing with cooling capabilities (or just clothes made of linen, nylon, or polyester) to your travel wardrobe.

The most breathable clothing is made of materials like cotton, linen, nylon, polyester, merino wool, and silk. Though fabrics like spandex, fleece, and denim have plenty of benefits, they’re not quite as breathable.

Generally soft, stretchy, and loose-fitting clothing is best for travel, as it’ll keep you comfy and won’t feel restrictive on long flights or drives. Some people may also opt for compressive clothing, like leggings or compression socks, which helps promote circulation on long travel days. You may also want to choose clothing you know to be breathable so you don’t overheat.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

For this article, associate commerce editor Hillary Maglin collaborated with other members of the T+L team to conclude which clothing that we’ve personally used is the most comfortable for travel days. Hillary travels by plane and car several times a year and is obsessed with soft and slouchy pieces to keep her comfy on her journeys.

How to not look like a tourist (even if you are one)

what is tourist outfit

Karin Kemp thought she'd done everything she could to not look like a tourist in Belgium. She wore muted clothes, learned helpful phrases in French and Flemish, and did her best to blend in. Still, Americans would stop her on the street to ask for directions.

"I finally asked one how he knew I was an American," says Kemp, a retired graphic designer from Matthews, North Carolina. "He pointed to my shoes."

She was wearing white sneakers. Gotcha!

You should be concerned about fitting in, even if you're an artist like Kemp. Standing out while you're visiting another place can make life uncomfortable – and it could even cost you yours. This summer, four visitors cycling in Tajikistan were targeted and killed by  terrorists. The U.S. State Department is continuously warning Americans about travel abroad, sometimes advising them to stay away from touristy areas.

So how do you not look like a tourist, even if you are one? It's a combination of wearing the right clothes, visiting the right places, and behaving in an un-touristy way, say experts.

It's what you wear

"Nothing identifies you more like a tourist and an American as white Nike sneakers," says Kemp. "The blue jeans and sneakers went in the closet."

Sometimes, blending in means staying away from clothes marketed to travelers.

"Locals don’t wear zip-off pants and breathable mesh shorts," says Summer Davis, who spent two years as a tour guide in Morocco.

Cameras are also a dead giveaway.

"If you enjoy photography, I would suggest using a bag for your camera that doesn't immediately look like a camera bag," says Wayne Goodwin, a world traveler who founded Evolve Travel Goods, a travel gear company.

But make sure it's the right bag.

"Having a backpack or fanny pack are also dead giveaways that you don't fit in," says Glen Loveland, a human resources manager who lives in Beijing.

Bottom line: If you want to blend in, you have to look the part. You don't have to look like a local, but avoiding bright clothes, glittery jewelry and high-end electronics can make you less of a target.

It's where you go

Paula Miller, a retired teacher who lives in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, watches the ebb and flow of tourists in her town.

"It’s pretty easy to figure out if they are tourists," she says. "From the erratic driving patterns to the entire family visiting the grocery store. Most of our visitors rent houses near the beach, so they are often stocking up at the grocery store and trailing each other around the aisles. We have one main road, and people often make sudden braking moves or turn without signaling."

Sometimes, tourists flock to dangerous places. For example, the State Department warns that visitors to Turkey should "stay alert" in locations frequented by Westerners, particularly at popular tourist locations in Istanbul . The reason is simple: For the bad guys, tourist attractions are a target-rich opportunity.

And sometimes, tourists don't even know why they're there. Seriously. At Walden Pond, some visitors don't see what the big deal is, according to Corinne Smith, who works at the gift shop and has authored several books on Henry David Thoreau.

"Don't come in and say, 'I don't remember – why is this place important?'" she says. "Know at least a little when you come."

Otherwise, they'll know you're a tourist.

It's how you act

The final way to not look like a tourist is to not act like one. And as you can imagine, I could write an entire book on this subject.

The list of annoying tourist behaviors is long. When I lived in Orlando, we could always tell the tourists by their vehicles. They drove overpacked minivans that occasionally veered off I-4 because Dad was driving all night to get to Disney World. Oh, and the out-of-state plates, of course.

Michael Brein, a Seattle psychologist who specializes in travel, says visitors who do annoying or culturally insensitive things can't help themselves. They're just ignorant.

"They neither particularly understand much of the depth of the peoples and cultures of the countries they are visiting," he says. "Nor do they have an appreciation of the languages and subtleties of the cultures."

But there's hope if you're trying to not look like a tourist. You can study local customs before you go and make an effort to learn about the place you're visiting. You can take a few minutes to pack the right clothes – and plan the right itinerary. Who knows, you might have a better trip?

More insider tips on how to not look like a tourist

• Think of it as a game.  At least that's how behavioral strategist Ron Evans describes the art of blending in. "How closely can I mimic surrounding behavior to fit in without notice?" asks Evans, who runs a consulting firm called Group of Minds. "I consider it a fascinating game."

• No maps!  That's the advice of Alexa Amador, a digital marketer for a health services company in Sugar Land, Tex., who frequently visits Europe. "Don't walk around with a giant map in your hands," she says. "Oh boy, everyone can tell when someone is very lost, pacing back and forth, unfolding and refolding the map, and are on the verge of panicking." Instead, keep the map on your phone – and stay cool.

• Slow down.  Tourists try to do everything in a day. If you stop running, you won't stand out. "Just be still for a while – at a café table, on the perimeter of a tourist site, on the bench by the river," advises Debra Ruzbasan, a sales manager for Ed-Ventures, a tour operator. "You will blend in. You will also be less of a target for pickpockets and other nuisances."

Introduction

When traveling to a new destination, fitting in with the local culture can be a rewarding and immersive experience. One way to blend in seamlessly is to dress like a local rather than a tourist. While comfort and practicality are crucial factors when choosing your travel attire, it’s also important to consider the cultural norms and weather conditions of your destination.

In this travel guide, we’ll explore some tips and tricks on how to dress like a local while still maintaining your personal style. From selecting comfortable clothing to packing the right shoes and accessories, we’ll cover everything you need to know to look and feel like a seasoned traveler.

Whether you’re embarking on a city adventure, exploring a tropical paradise, or traversing cultural landmarks, dressing appropriately will not only help you immerse yourself in the local environment but also ensure you’re comfortable and ready for any situation that may arise during your journey.

So, let’s dive in and discover how to dress like a local while staying true to your own unique style!

Choosing Comfortable Clothing

When traveling, comfort should be a top priority. Opt for clothing made from breathable and lightweight fabrics that allow for ease of movement. Natural fibers like cotton and linen are great choices as they are breathable and help regulate body temperature in warm climates. Additionally, consider packing wrinkle-resistant clothing to minimize the need for ironing.

Loose-fitting clothing is also advisable, especially in countries with conservative dress codes or humid climates. Flowy dresses, loose trousers, and oversized tops can help keep you cool and comfortable while still looking stylish. Avoid tight or restrictive clothing that may restrict your movement or cause discomfort after long hours of travel.

Another important consideration is the versatility of your clothing. Opt for items that can be easily mixed and matched to create different outfit combinations. This will help you maximize your wardrobe options while minimizing the amount of clothing you need to pack. Additionally, choose clothing that is easy to layer, allowing you to adjust your outfit according to changing weather conditions.

Lastly, consider the functionality of your clothing. Look for items with plenty of pockets to keep your essentials easily accessible. Quick-drying and moisture-wicking fabrics are ideal for outdoor activities or destinations with unpredictable weather. Also, choose colors that can conceal stains or dirt, especially if you’ll be engaging in adventurous activities.

By selecting comfortable clothing that meets these criteria, you’ll be able to navigate your travel adventures with ease and confidence while still looking chic and stylish.

Packing Practical Shoes

Choosing the right footwear is essential for a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience. When it comes to shoes, it’s important to strike a balance between style and practicality. Here are some tips for packing the right shoes for your trip:

1. Comfort is key: Prioritize comfort over style when selecting travel shoes. Look for shoes with cushioned insoles and good arch support to keep your feet comfortable during long days of exploring. Consider packing a pair of sneakers or walking shoes that are lightweight, breathable, and suitable for various terrains.

2. Versatility matters: Opt for shoes that can be dressed up or down, allowing you to transition seamlessly from daytime sightseeing to evening dinners. A pair of versatile ballet flats or loafers can be a great choice, as they can be paired with both casual and more formal outfits.

3. Consider the weather: The weather at your destination will play a significant role in determining the most suitable shoes to pack. If you’re heading to a rainy destination, waterproof shoes or boots will be essential to keep your feet dry. For warmer climates, opt for sandals or open-toed shoes that provide breathability and allow your feet to stay cool.

4. Pack a pair of flip-flops: Flip-flops are a travel essential, especially if you’ll be visiting beach destinations or communal shower facilities. They are lightweight, easy to pack, and perfect for walking short distances or lounging by the pool.

5. Limit the number of shoes: While it’s tempting to pack multiple pairs of shoes, try to limit yourself to a maximum of three pairs. This will save precious space in your luggage and reduce the weight you have to carry. Remember, it’s all about practicality and versatility.

By selecting comfortable and versatile shoes that are suitable for the weather and activities of your trip, you’ll ensure that your feet stay happy and pain-free throughout your travels.

Layering for Changing Weather

When traveling to destinations with unpredictable or changing weather conditions, layering your clothing becomes essential. Layering allows you to adapt to varying temperatures throughout the day and ensures that you stay comfortable in any climate. Here are some tips for layering effectively:

1. Start with a base layer: Choose a lightweight and breathable base layer that can be worn against your skin. This layer should be moisture-wicking and quick-drying to keep you comfortable even if you sweat. Opt for fabrics such as merino wool or synthetic materials to regulate your body temperature.

2. Add a mid-layer for insulation: The mid-layer provides insulation and warmth. This can be a sweater, cardigan, or lightweight jacket. Look for materials like fleece or down for optimal warmth without adding bulk. Consider packing a compressible down jacket that can be easily folded and stored in your bag when not in use, but provides excellent warmth when needed.

3. Outerwear for protection: Depending on the climate and activities planned, pack an appropriate outer layer. For rainy destinations, a waterproof and windproof jacket is a must to keep you dry. If you’re traveling to colder regions, a heavier coat or parka will be necessary to protect you from freezing temperatures. Look for outerwear with functional features like a hood, adjustable cuffs, and zippered pockets.

4. Don’t forget accessories: Hats, scarves, and gloves are essential accessories for layering and protecting exposed areas. A lightweight and packable hat can shield you from the sun, while a warm hat and gloves combo will keep you cozy in colder climates. A versatile scarf can add a stylish touch to any outfit while providing additional warmth when needed.

5. Reconsider your footwear: In changing weather conditions, you might need to adjust your footwear accordingly. If there’s a chance of rain, pack waterproof shoes or boots to keep your feet dry. In colder climates, consider insulated or lined boots to provide warmth and protect against icy conditions. Having a suitable pair of socks is also crucial for keeping your feet comfortable and dry.

By layering your clothing effectively, you’ll be prepared for any weather changes that come your way during your travels. This versatile approach ensures that you’ll be comfortable and stylish, no matter the destination or climate.

Accentuating the Vacation Vibe

When you’re on vacation, it’s the perfect opportunity to embrace a more relaxed and carefree style. By incorporating certain elements into your outfits, you can effortlessly accentuate the vacation vibe and add a touch of fun to your wardrobe. Here are some tips to help you achieve that:

1. Opt for vibrant colors and prints: Embrace bold and vibrant colors that reflect the energy and atmosphere of your destination. Whether it’s a tropical floral print, a vibrant sarong, or a bright sundress, incorporating colorful elements into your outfits instantly adds a vacation flair. Just remember to choose colors that complement your skin tone and make you feel confident.

2. Don’t shy away from resort wear: Resort wear is designed with vacation relaxation in mind. Consider packing items like flowy maxi dresses, linen pants, or lightweight kaftans. These pieces not only exude a laid-back holiday vibe but are also comfortable and breathable for warm weather destinations.

3. Embrace casual and beachy accessories: Complete your vacation looks with the right accessories. Think straw hats, oversized sunglasses, beaded bracelets, and woven beach bags. These pieces not only serve a functional purpose but also instantly elevate any outfit, giving off a relaxed and beachy vibe.

4. Experiment with vacation-inspired patterns: Incorporating patterns like stripes, tropical prints, or nautical designs can instantly bring a vacation feel to your outfits. Whether it’s a striped top paired with denim shorts or a palm leaf-printed skirt, these patterns evoke a sense of wanderlust and adventure.

5. Consider lightweight and breathable fabrics: Choose fabrics like linen, cotton, or chiffon, which are not only comfortable for warm weather but also give a more relaxed and vacation-like feel to your attire. These fabrics allow for breathability and airflow, keeping you cool and comfortable in tropical destinations.

Remember, embracing the vacation vibe is all about expressing your personal style and enjoying the carefree nature of your travels. So, be creative and have fun when styling your vacation outfits, allowing yourself to fully immerse in the ambiance of your destination.

Dressing Appropriately for Different Destinations

When planning your travel wardrobe, it’s important to consider the cultural norms and customs of your destination. Dressing appropriately not only shows respect for the local culture but also helps you blend in with the locals. Here are some tips to help you dress appropriately for different destinations:

1. Research the local dress code: Before your trip, research the specific dress code of your destination. Some countries have conservative dress norms that require modest clothing, while others may have more relaxed attitudes. Understanding these cultural differences will help you avoid any unintentional fashion faux pas.

2. Pack modest clothing for conservative destinations: If you’re traveling to a country or region with conservative norms, pack clothing that covers your shoulders, knees, and décolletage. Long-sleeved shirts, loose trousers or skirts, and shawls or scarves can be versatile pieces to have in your travel wardrobe. This will not only help you show respect for the local culture, but also ensure that you’re comfortable in a conservative environment.

3. Consider local weather conditions: While it’s important to dress modestly, you should also take into account the weather conditions of your destination. For hot and humid climates, choose breathable and lightweight fabrics that will keep you cool while still adhering to local customs.

4. Adapt to religious sites: When visiting religious sites, temples, or mosques, it’s important to dress respectfully. This may involve covering your shoulders, wearing long pants or skirts, and removing your shoes. Be mindful of the specific guidelines and requirements of each religious site to avoid any disrespectful behavior.

5. Embrace the local style: Don’t be afraid to incorporate elements of the local style into your outfits. This can be as simple as wearing traditional fabrics or incorporating local patterns and accessories. By embracing the local style, you show an appreciation for the culture and make a connection with the local community.

Remember, dressing appropriately is about being culturally sensitive and respectful. By understanding and adhering to the dress norms of your destination, you can ensure a positive and respectful travel experience.

Avoiding Overpacking

Overpacking is a common mistake many travelers make, resulting in unnecessary weight and inconvenience. To travel lighter and more efficiently, follow these tips to avoid overpacking:

1. Plan your outfits in advance: Before you start packing, plan your outfits for each day of your trip. This helps you avoid packing items you won’t end up wearing and ensures that you have everything you need for each specific day or activity. Consider versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create different looks.

2. Stick to a color scheme: Choosing a color scheme for your travel wardrobe can help you create cohesive outfits while minimizing the number of items you need to pack. Opt for neutral colors like black, white, and beige, and add pops of color with accessories instead.

3. Pack versatile clothing items: Look for clothing items that can serve multiple purposes. For example, a lightweight scarf can be used as a wrap, a sarong, or a beach towel. A maxi dress can be dressed up for a special occasion or dressed down for a casual day of sightseeing.

4. Take advantage of hotel amenities: Many hotels provide laundry services or have self-service laundry facilities. Take advantage of these amenities to wash your clothes during your trip, allowing you to pack fewer items. Packing a small supply of laundry detergent or using travel-size packets can also be helpful.

5. Use compression bags or packing cubes: These handy tools help maximize space in your luggage by compressing your clothing. They also help keep your belongings organized and separate different types of clothing.

6. Consider the local shopping scene: If you’re traveling to a destination known for its shopping, leave some space in your suitcase for souvenirs and new purchases. This way, you can bring back unique items and support local businesses without having to carry an overly heavy suitcase from the start.

7. Leave room for essentials: Remember to leave some extra space in your luggage for essentials like toiletries, medications, and travel documents. These items often take up more room than anticipated, so allowing for some additional space ensures you have everything you need.

By following these tips, you can avoid overpacking and make your travel experience more streamlined and enjoyable. Traveling light not only reduces the burden of carrying heavy luggage but also gives you more freedom to explore and enjoy your destination.

Blending In with Local Style

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in a new culture while traveling is to blend in with the local style. Dressing like the locals not only shows respect for their customs and traditions but also allows you to engage more deeply with the local community. Here are some tips on how to blend in with the local style:

1. Observe and mimic: Take some time to observe how locals dress in your destination. Notice the colors, patterns, and styles that are commonly worn. Pay attention to the footwear, accessories, and overall presentation. Once you have a good understanding of the local style, mimic it by incorporating similar elements into your own outfits.

2. Shop locally: Instead of relying solely on your current wardrobe, consider investing in a few clothing items or accessories from local shops or markets. This not only gives you an opportunity to support local artisans and businesses, but also allows you to authentically incorporate elements of the local style into your travel wardrobe.

3. Respect cultural norms: Be mindful of the cultural norms and customs of your destination when choosing your outfits. In some countries, there may be specific dress codes or rules to follow, particularly when visiting religious or sacred sites. Show respect by dressing appropriately and modestly in such situations.

4. Pay attention to fabrics: Different regions have their own preferred fabrics based on climate and traditions. Consider selecting clothing made from locally favored fabrics, as this will not only help you blend in visually, but also keep you comfortable in the local weather conditions.

5. Adapt your style, not your identity: While it’s important to blend in, remember to stay true to your own personal style. You can incorporate elements of the local fashion into your outfits while still maintaining your individuality. Mixing traditional pieces with your own unique style can create a fashionable and culturally respectful look.

6. Ask locals for advice: If you’re unsure about the local style or need guidance, don’t hesitate to ask locals for their recommendations. They can provide insights on where to shop, what to wear, and other fashion tips specific to their culture. This not only helps you blend in better but also facilitates cultural exchange and connections.

Remember, blending in with the local style isn’t about completely changing who you are; it’s about showing respect, appreciating the local culture, and cultivating a deeper connection with the community. By incorporating local fashion elements into your outfits, you’ll not only look the part but also experience a more authentic and rewarding travel experience.

Accessorizing for Convenience and Safety

When traveling, accessorizing is not only about adding style to your outfit but also about convenience and safety. Choosing the right accessories can enhance your travel experience and make your journey more comfortable and secure. Here are some ideas for accessorizing effectively:

1. Functional bags: Invest in a sturdy and practical bag that is both stylish and functional. Depending on the nature of your trip, consider options like a backpack, crossbody bag, or a tote with secure closures. Look for bags with anti-theft features, multiple compartments, and waterproof materials to keep your belongings safe and organized.

2. Travel-friendly wallets: Opt for a compact and travel-friendly wallet that can hold your essential documents, such as passport, ID, credit cards, and cash. Look for RFID-blocking wallets to protect against electronic pickpocketing. Consider a neck wallet or a money belt for added security while exploring crowded tourist areas.

3. Versatile scarves: Scarves are a versatile travel accessory that can add flair to your outfits while serving multiple purposes. Use them as a lightweight blanket during flights, a cover-up for modesty in temples, or a fashion statement to elevate your look. Choose scarves made from breathable and wrinkle-resistant fabrics for easy packing.

4. Comfortable footwear: In addition to practical shoes, consider packing comfortable and cushioned insoles or gel inserts to provide extra support and alleviate foot fatigue. Socks with moisture-wicking and odor-resistant properties are essential for keeping your feet dry and fresh throughout the day.

5. Travel-sized toiletries: Opt for travel-sized toiletries and invest in refillable containers to save space and prevent spills in your luggage. Transparent and TSA-approved toiletry bags are convenient for security checks. Consider carrying a small hand sanitizer, tissues, and wet wipes for hygiene purposes.

6. Portable chargers: Keep your electronic devices charged on the go with a portable charger or power bank. This ensures that you can stay connected and use your smartphone or other devices without worrying about battery life. Look for lightweight and high-capacity options that can charge multiple devices simultaneously.

7. Personal safety accessories: Depending on your destination, consider personal safety accessories such as a whistle, a personal alarm, or a self-defense keychain. These small tools can provide an added sense of security, especially when traveling alone or in unfamiliar places.

Choosing the right accessories can greatly enhance your travel experience, making it more convenient, safe, and enjoyable. By carefully selecting functional and stylish accessories, you’ll be well-prepared to navigate your destination with ease and confidence.

Dressing like a local while traveling not only helps you blend in with the culture and customs of your destination but also enhances your overall travel experience. By choosing comfortable and versatile clothing, packing practical shoes, and layering for changing weather, you can ensure you’re prepared for any situation while staying comfortable and stylish.

Accentuating the vacation vibe through vibrant colors, resort wear, and casual accessories adds a touch of fun and relaxation to your travel wardrobe. Dressing appropriately for different destinations shows respect for local norms and enables you to engage more authentically with the local community.

Avoiding overpacking is crucial for smooth and hassle-free travel. Plan your outfits in advance, stick to a color scheme, and utilize compression bags or packing cubes to maximize space in your luggage. Shopping locally and embracing the local style allow you to truly immerse yourself in the culture and support local artisans.

Accessorizing for convenience and safety ensures a seamless travel experience. Choose functional bags, travel-friendly wallets, and versatile scarves. Consider comfort-enhancing footwear, portable chargers, and personal safety accessories for added convenience and peace of mind.

In conclusion, dressing like a local is about striking a balance between respect for the culture and expressing your own personal style. By incorporating elements of the local fashion, you not only show appreciation for the destination but also create meaningful connections with the local community. So, go ahead and dress like a local on your next adventure, and enjoy a memorable and authentic travel experience!

Travel Outfits: How to Look Chic When You’re Flying

travel outfits

Listen—I’m all about rocking a cute travel outfit when I’m heading out of town…but I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing heels to the airport.

To be honest, I don’t even like wearing jeans on a plane (although I’ll occasionally make an exception if they’re REALLY comfortable jeans , or if my flight is under three hours.)

Usually you’ll find me rocking a head-to-toe set of my favorite affordable cashmere during the winter, and a lightweight loungewear set during the summer.

I often see pictures of bloggers at the airport posing next to their cute pink luggage wearing like…wedges and a mini-dress. HARD PASS. How is that even comfortable? When you’re en route to the airport (and your final destination) it’s all about feeling comfortable.

For this reason, I decided to put together a little guide to cute travel outfits…featuring things that you’ll actually want to travel in , whether you’re heading out for a winter getaway or a girls trip .

Because believe it or not, it’s possible to rock comfy loungewear, leggings, or a jumpsuit and still look SUPER chic, as long as you style them properly (especially my favorite faux leather leggings .)

Below are a handful of great travel outfits I found while trolling IG—and the exact things you can buy to replicate them.

(Also: if you’re also on the hunt for stylish carry-on luggage or if you need some good go-to travel toiletries…I got you covered.)

Chic Travel Outfits

Travel Outfits

Here, I’m sharing a handful of my go-to travel outfit pieces. These are all items that I think you should have in your closet regardless of how often you go on a getaway, but they just so happen to be particularly comfy choices when going on a plane.

These picks will of course depend on how long your flight is and where you’re headed, but overall, I think they’re practical for travel days.

The only caveat here is that I know a jumpsuit isn’t exactly ideal if you’re going on a long-haul flight—however—I personally don’t mind wearing them on planes because they’re so comfy and not really that difficult to slip in and out of when you need a bathroom break.

If jumpsuits aren’t your jam, there are plenty of other ideas in this post that should work for you, like a cute matching sweatsuit or leggings and a leather jacket. Without further ado, here are the staples I’d recommend having on hand for travel days.

This post gave me a more clear idea of what I will wear when travelling and I especially loved the part where you mentioned the all black and all white monochromatic looks .

I do not think I would wear white on a plane. No to the belly sticking out as well. I do like the stretchy pants and sneakers.

Why would anyone wear a jumpsuit on a plane? The toilets are used by hundreds of people, now you want to pull down the top part of your clothes and have it dangling somewhere near the toilet, while you’re sitting on a toilet that exposes the part that gets wee on when the seat is up? Eeu that’s all kind of germ wrong!! But I do love the little 3/4 joggers! Def looking for some of those for my next long haul (when this pandemic is over!)

25 Chic travel outfits: How to look stylish on vacation

How to look stylish on vacation

Fall happens to be one of my favorite times of year to plan trips and vacations. Coincidentally, also one of my favorite seasons to dress for. (So, hello chic travel outfits!)

You have the hustle of summer vacation behind you,  you’ve got more time to spare, not to mention–the weather is cooler in warmer climates and much better for walking around and exploring all day! (But don’t worry, if you’re heading somewhere with warm weather, I’ve got you covered too–I cover all seasons and weather in this post!)

Maybe you’re prepping for a European adventure and need some inspo for the long flight ahead of you. (Also, you must read my Europe packing list !) Perhaps you’re headed to Cabo and need to know how to look stylish on vacation without sweating through everything you packed.

Maybe you’re planning a business trip and you need some casual but polished outfit ideas you can mix and match? (A work capsule wardrobe of sorts ?)

Hopefully you’ll come away with a few ideas you can incorporate into your own personal style, no matter what your trip calls for.

Keep reading for my best tips for putting together chic travel outfits, my recommendations for the best travel clothes, plus over 25 options of cute travel outfits to copy! (Make sure to bookmark this page for your next trip!)

First, let’s get into my tips!

How to look stylish on vacation:

My 7 tips for putting together chic travel outfits in 2023-2024.

flat shoes for travel

#1: For the most chic travel outfits, plan outfits around your shoes

The easiest place to start when you’re building stylish outfits for a vacation or a trip is  shoes . This is true especially in winter, when you’re packing and coordinating heavy shoes like boots, which IMO also happen to be the hardest kinds of shoes to style because you tend to need different pants for different boots and vice versa. This is easier in the summer months because you can easily pack 4-5 pairs of sandals or ballet flats and take up little to no room in a suitcase. The overarching rule of thumb here is that neutral colors are your friend, as it’s easier to mix and match to create the perfect outfit with very little fuss.

Here’s how I’d typically approach packing shoes by season…

One pair of cute white sneakers or even slip-on sneakers (worn on plane–maximum comfort is key here), 1-2 pair of flat sandals (usually in a nude color, secondary color would likely be black, depending on what other clothes I’m packing), maybe one pair of ballet flats, which are a great option if you’re packing for moderate temps and an occasion where you want to look polished, but don’t want to wear heels.

One pair of cute white sneakers (worn on plane), one pair flat or low-heel booties, one pair of ballet flats, one pair of loafers

One pair cute white sneakers, two pairs booties (neutral and black)–at least one of these pairs should be water resistant or waterproof. One pair of flats or loafers.

Winter: (Assuming very cold weather/snow/slush/rain)

Two pairs booties–at least one of these pairs should be water resistant or waterproof. I typically pack the least amount of shoes in winter as they take up the most room AND I also have to account for super bulky layers in a suitcase–I don’t have space for multiple shoes AND multiple sweaters, jackets, etc.

Able jumpsuit travel outfit

Old Able jumpsuit ( similar here ) // white court sneakers ( reviewed here )

#2: One piece outfits are your best friend (dresses, jumpsuits)

I LOVE one-piece outfits, and I think this applies particularly in the summer months, when all you really need to create a great outfit is a dress or a jumpsuit. Summer months are PRIME for this–if I’m heading to a tropical vacation, I am packing mostly dresses made of breathable fabrics and maybe a jumpsuit or two! Since you aren’t “mixing and matching” anything (because, it’s one piece) go wild–prints (florals! stripes!) fun cut-outs–whatever!

The only rule for these items is that they MUST be able to be dressed up and down, and worn with multiple types of shoes and accessories. (In my case, this usually means something can be worn with sneakers for a casual look to walk around in all day with a pair of small subtle hoops and maybe a scarf, and then swapped for a dressier shoe–a pair of sandals for example–and a pair of statement earrings, for going out to dinner/drinks.)

I think this is harder to do in cold weather, but it can absolutely still be done! For example, I wore an olive utility jumpsuit multiple times for different occasions last year in Ireland where it was wet and chilly. It looked cute with both a denim jacket and a leather jacket layered over the top. A “one and done” outfit makes packing considerably easier, and also allows you to pack a  lot  less stuff!

How to look stylish on vacation

Sweater:  similar here  // Pants:  Everlane straight leg crop pants in Sandstone  (TTS), similar here // Jacket:  ABLE Maha leather jacket (I sized up so it’s roomier but it’s TTS.), similar here  // Scarf: Old, similar h ere // Sunglasses: Ray ban // Headband:  similar here

#3: Consider a color scheme and lean into neutral colors

Now, this only applies to things that need to be mixed and matched. I don’t count “one piece outfits” as needing to be part of a color scheme, because if you’re packing only neutral accessories and you have a one-piece outfit, it doesn’t really matter what color it is, you know? But if you’re packing mostly tops and bottoms, it will be  much  easier to put stylish outfits together if you have a color scheme in mind when packing!

Now, this doesn’t necessarily HAVE to mean you should only pack neutral colors, but I find that it’s often easier to gravitate toward neutrals for my main pieces and incorporate pops of color with accessories, lipstick, and shoes. I’m always itching for more color in the spring and summer, whereas for fall and winter, I usually feel most chic and put together in minimalist color schemes, like creams, camels and black, and using patterns and accessories to make my outfits most visually interesting!

Want to strike a balance somewhere in the middle? Consider neutrals along with a more muted version of a color–for example, a mustard, deep burgundy, or burnt orange for fall, which pairs easily with blacks and browns, or a muted dusty pink for dusty blue for spring, which pairs easily with the same neutrals–white, black, brown.

How to look stylish on vacation

J.Crew turtleneck (old): similar here // Skirt: similar here // Zara coat: similar here //  Everlane Day Boots (their city boots are also very similar with amazing reviews.) They make AMAZINGLY comfortable shoes!

#4: Lean into prints (especially stripes!)

I have never met a stripe I didn’t love, and it’s rare that I take a trip or vacation without at least a couple of striped items in my suitcase. (This is especially true in the fall and winter months, when I’m dressing in layers!) Why? Because stripes just make everything look a little more pulled together, visually interesting, and stylish! They’re not trendy, so they’re always in style, and they look a lot more intentional than just a plain old t-shirt.

A pattern of any kind is a great way to make any outfit more fashionable, so after considering your color scheme, start thinking of options that fit within that color scheme that  also  have a bit of pattern! The easiest way I find to accomplish this is with t-shirts, sweaters, and scarves.

What about mixing prints? I give that a hard YES. Just make sure when you’re mixing prints to vary the scale and choose coordinating/complimentary colors. One print should be larger and bolder and one print should be smaller and more subtle. (You can see examples above where I’m wearing patterned hair scarves with my striped tops!) Even a floral print can be a surprisingly versatile option!

Amazon Dress and head scarf

#5: Always pack a scarf or two

I’m guessing you’ve gathered by now that I wear a LOT of scarves on vacation. In fact, it’s my #1 style hack. If you take nothing away from this post, I hope this is what you remember! Truly, the easiest way to spice up any outfit–day or night–is with a scarf. Tie one in your hair to keep it out of your face on a hot day, disguise unwashed hair (bc who has time to wash and style on vacation?!) or just as a way to make your outfit more interesting. For cooler weather, I love a cute bandana or neck scarf!

Leather jacket and jeans outfit

ABLE Leather jacket (c/o–reviewed here) // Similar Black Tee // A.Golde Riley jeans (took my normal size, they feel small but will stretch out, but size up if you want them roomier) ABLE Karla belt bag – use code JESSKEYS15 for 15% off! (c/o) Also reviewed it here!

#6: When in doubt, a great lipstick makes everything stylish:

Exhibit A: Candid photo taken in Dublin where I hadn’t washed my (air dried) hair in a couple of days, and I’m wearing a very simple outfit of a black tee, black Moto jacket, and jeans–yet somehow, the red lipstick makes it all look intentional. 😂 I swear lipstick can take the most boring, even disheveled comfortable travel look and make it “perfectly undone.” Some of my favorite lipsticks are  Ilia  (they have amazing shades but if you want something a little more subtle–Cinnabar is an amazing brick red!) and  Merit’s lipsticks  that make your lips pop without being too much to wear during the day!

Striped Turtle Neck: similar here // Coat: updated style here // Scarf: similar here // Denim: similar here // Similar White Sneakers

#7: Don’t forget about coordinating outer layers + accessories!

Just like you want to ensure all your tops and bottoms can be mixed and matched, ensure that your outer layers can also be worn with everything you’re packing!

This doesn’t mean you can’t wear a statement color–for example, the coat I wore in Lisbon my first time visiting was a mustardy yellow camel color–it added so much punch to my outfits (and photos!) but still coordinated with everything else I had in my suitcase.

Same with my favorite dusty blue coat–it’s neutral enough to where it doesn’t clash with anything, and it adds a lot of personality (and of course, extra warmth) to all my outfits! If you want to bring a bright red crossbody purse–go for it, as long as you can wear it with everything else in your wardrobe!

Like I said, accessories are the easiest ways to add color into your outfits.

More stylish vacation outfits:

Stripes are always a good idea when it comes to chic travel outfits! Here I paired them with a white mini skirt (could also do shorts, white shorts or denim!) and of course, the hair scarf. Never not wearing a hair scarf on a Europe trip (especially when it’s hot!)

Bright and colorful romper:

Romper: Rented c/o Rent the Runway  // Boots: similar here

On my recent Napa trip I brought almost exclusively one-piece outfits. (Dresses and rompers!) I loved this one that I rented from Rent the Runway–I loved it so much I bought it! I barely needed any accessories–the colorful pattern did the talking! Renting is always a great option to ensure you are well-stocked with chic travel outfits without risk of breaking the bank!

A swing dress in breathable fabrics and red ballet flats:

swing dress and red ballet flats

Faherty Dress  //  Rothy’s Round-Toe Flats  ( reviewed here !)

An easy way to incorporate color into your travel wardrobe is with your accessories–including shoes! I love a little red ballet flat. Surprisingly, red goes with a lot of other colors–it’s easy to pair with other things in your wardrobe. You can read my Rothys review here!

The Nap Dress: one of the most versatile pieces you’ll pack for warm weather

Nap Dress travel outfit

Hill House Ellie Nap Dress  (this color/pattern is a few years old but they have so many cute colorways!)

The Hill House nap dress: my summer wardrobe work horse. I own it in 3 colors. I wore it day and night in August in Lisbon where it was sweltering! Their summery dresses are made of lightweight fabrics, and in my opinion, a great piece to always have in your suitcase for warm climates.

The perfect versatile blouse for a classic look:

Faherty Willa blouse and jeans

Headscarf: similar here // Faherty Willa blouse (c/o TTS) // A.Golde Riley jeans (took my normal size, they feel small but will stretch out, but size up if you want them roomier) // Loafers  (c/o TTS)

Chic casual basics in Napa (from my first trip in February a couple years ago!) This top has become one of my bestsellers for good reason–it just goes with everything! Here I’m styling it with jeans but would also look cute with wide-leg pants, trousers, and I’ve worn it in the summer with shorts!

Exact same outfit, just with sneakers this time, (and sans hair scarf) in Dublin!

A versatile cardigan:

Very similar outfit for cooler weather–a cream cardigan instead of a blouse, and wearing that same scarf from my Napa outfit, this time around my neck instead of in my hair!

Neutrals and stripes for extra polish: (perfect for a business trip!)

Black on black: always a winning combo

Chic travel outfit tip: wear a head scarf for an instant stylish vacation outfit

Black Turtleneck // Denim // Hair Scarf

Dinner in Lisbon: One of my favorite fall outfits–a black turtleneck, jeans, black boots, and a hair scarf!

the Sezane Gaspard cardigan:

Silk Scarf // Button Up Cardigan // Denim // White Court Sneakers

Okay, you get it, right? Neck scarves are cute. 😂 Another tip: I love bringing a cardigan along in my suitcase because it’s both a first layer (buttoned up the front) and a second layer (unbuttoned, over a tee or blouse!) The Sezane Gaspard cardigan that I’m wearing here is major mainstay in my fall/winter wardrobe and I own it in two colors!

A statement coat:

Chic travel outfits: how to look stylish while traveling

Mango coat  (sold out but  reviewed here !), similar here //   Sezane sweatshirt  (I’d size up, I went with M), similar here //  Sezane jeans  (see outfit #1 for details) //   New Balance sneakers  (TTS) //  J.Crew turtleneck  (TTS) //  similar headband

Here’s another example of a neutral but statement coat. I love this coat (got it from Mango last year) and it goes with so many things. I call this a “dusty seafoam” color and I think it makes the most basic outfits so cute. Also, another scarf, but a winter version. (Also Sezane! Don’t sleep on their accessories!)

Warm and cozy layers:

Chic travel outfits for winter: Quebec City–how to look stylish on vacation when its freezing

Weatherproof Boots // Weatherproof Parka // Layers: Turtleneck !

From my trip to Quebec City with Neal a few years back. Dressing for the coldest weather (we’re talking negative wind chill!) can be the most challenging of all, but I have one tip: black, black, and black. It’s the most guaranteed way to still feel chic even if you have to wear 5 layers. Also: coordinating your hats, gloves, and boots. Make sure you’re factoring your accessories into your outfits–it helps avoid that “little kid on the playground” look. I brought one black beanie and one white/neutral beanie and I always felt warm and coordinated. And my warmest black parka. (Getting a slimmer design also helps!)

Best airport/travel outfits for long travel days and long-haul flights:

I couldn’t publish this post without touching on chic travel outfits for day-of travel. If you’ve got a long journey ahead of you, the last thing you want to wear is a pair of–gasp– jeans! The perfect travel outfit can make those long haul flights go a lot quicker, so it’s worth a bit of planning ahead.

Where to begin? Coordinating loungewear makes some of the best travel outfits. Another great combo? Comfy black leggings and a cute tee that you’ll also get a lot of wear out of during your trip!

If it’s summer, a comfortable dress can actually make a great travel outfit too (I wear the famed Amazon mumu on the plane a lot) and a bonus: a dress is likely something you’ll wear over and over during your travels to warmer climates.

Another tip: consider easy on/off shoes for airport security (or plan ahead and wear socks so you aren’t barefoot on the airport floor!)

comfortable airport travel outfit

This affordable Amazon sweatshirt and matching pair of sweatpants are two of my bestsellers. Wear them together or separately to make multiple comfy airport outfits

comfortable travel outfit idea

Abercrombie sweatshirt and sweatpants , Madewell court sneakers (reviewed here)

cozy travel outfit idea

Quince cashmere cardigan (reviewed here!) Lululemon leggings (although for a long flight I’d choose something less supportive, like their Align leggings or my fave budget-dupes, the Aerie offline leggings ), Bombas socks , Kizik Lima sneakers , Lululemon city adventurer fanny pack , Amazon baseball cap

Delsey Paris Chatalet suitcase

An oldie but goodie–this is still a go-to outfit formula for me: striped tee ( this is my fave ), loose cardigan (I love Quince’s cardigans for staple sweaters–great quality for the price!), and comfy black leggings . I also love my Delsey Paris Chatalet suitcases (reviewed here ) if you’re looking for a suitcase recommendation!

WHEW, you made it to the bottom! I hope you’re feeling much more prepared for your trip. Now you know how to look stylish on vacation no matter where you’re going! Safe travels and have fun!

I’m a tacky tourist, and I’m proud of it! This shirt is the perfect way to show off my love of all things tacky. The tie-dye design is so hideous, it’s actually kind of beautiful. And the slogan, “I’m a tacky tourist, and I’m proud of it!” is just the icing on the cake. I’m so glad I found this shirt. It’s the perfect way to show my true colors.
(Maybell Boyle)
I’m not a tacky tourist, but I love this shirt! It’s so funny and ridiculous. I can’t wait to wear it to the beach this summer. I’m sure it will get a lot of laughs. And if anyone asks me why I’m wearing it, I’ll just tell them that I’m a tacky tourist, and I’m proud of it!

Why Female Tacky Tourist Outfit is Necessary

As a female traveler, I’ve always been a bit of a spectacle. I’m tall, blonde, and blue-eyed, and I tend to stand out in a crowd. This can be both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it’s great to be noticed and to make new friends. On the other hand, it can also be a bit of a hassle to deal with the constant attention.

One of the things I’ve learned to do is embrace my “tacky tourist” outfit. This is a term I use to describe the clothes I wear when I’m traveling, which are usually bright, colorful, and a bit over-the-top. I used to be self-conscious about wearing this type of outfit, but now I realize that it’s actually a great way to connect with other travelers.

When I’m wearing my tacky tourist outfit, I immediately stand out from the crowd. This makes it easy for other travelers to approach me and strike up a conversation. I’ve met some of my best friends while traveling, and I’m convinced that it’s all thanks to my tacky tourist outfit.

In addition to making it easy to meet new people, my tacky tourist outfit also helps me to feel more confident and adventurous. When I’m wearing these clothes, I feel like I can do anything. I’m not afraid to explore new places, try new things, and make new mistakes.

So, if you’re a female traveler, I encourage you to embrace your tacky tourist outfit. It’s a great way to connect with other travelers, have fun, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Here are a few reasons why a female tacky tourist outfit is necessary:

  • It makes you stand out from the crowd, which makes it easy to meet new people.
  • It helps you to feel more confident and adventurous.
  • It’s a great way to show your personality and have fun.

As a tacky tourist, I have spent years perfecting my look. I know what it takes to stand out from the crowd and make sure that everyone knows I’m a tourist. Here are my tips for creating the perfect tacky tourist outfit:

The most important part of any tacky tourist outfit is the top. You want something that is bright, loud, and attention-grabbing. Some good options include:

  • A brightly colored tank top or t-shirt
  • A Hawaiian shirt
  • A button-down shirt with the top few buttons undone

For your bottoms, you want something that is comfortable and easy to move around in. Some good options include:

  • A pair of jeans

When it comes to shoes, you have a few options. You can go for something comfortable, like a pair of flip-flops or sandals. Or, you can go for something more stylish, like a pair of wedges or heels. Just make sure that your shoes are comfortable enough to walk around in all day long.

Accessories

No tacky tourist outfit would be complete without a few accessories. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • A straw hat
  • A fanny pack
  • A pair of sunglasses
  • A selfie stick

Overall Look

When putting together your tacky tourist outfit, the most important thing is to have fun and be yourself. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different styles and colors. And don’t forget to accessorize! The more, the better.

Here are a few more tips for creating the perfect tacky tourist outfit:

  • Don’t be afraid to stand out. The whole point of a tacky tourist outfit is to be noticed. So don’t be afraid to wear something that is bright, loud, and attention-grabbing.
  • Don’t be afraid to have fun. A tacky tourist outfit is all about having fun and making people laugh. So don’t be afraid to wear something that is silly or over-the-top.
  • Don’t be afraid to accessorize. The more accessories, the better. A tacky tourist outfit is not complete without a few statement pieces.

So go out there and have fun creating the perfect tacky tourist outfit!

European Fashion 2023: What to Wear in Europe to Not Look Like a Tourist

European Fashion – What to Wear in Europe to Not Look Like a Tourist

Yes, you are a tourist. Some people say that it is ok to look like one.

I personally like to blend in and not draw attention to myself. There is always a little feeling of accomplishment when I am walking down the street in some European city, and a local asks me for directions or speaks to me in the local language.

Here are my tips on European fashion, accessories and what to wear in Europe to not look like a tourist – or even better: What not to wear and how to look like a local.

closeup of man and women legs

When traveling to Europe, the key is to blend in with the locals in terms of European dress code and European style. You should not dress as if you’re off to the Oscar’s nor should you look tousled or disheveled, as if you just got out of bed.

What to wear in Europe is also important because the more you look like a tourist, the more likely you’ll be targeted by pickpocketers and scammers. Finding the right outfit depends as much on what to wear as what not to wear in Europe and fit in a little more like a local.

The way you dress is important because it can lead to friendlier service while visiting Europe, and it can serve as protection against being earmarked as an “out-of-towner” by pick-pocketers. Take your cue from the locals and blend in with the current European fashion trends and unique European style.

“The best thing a traveler can do is go to a local clothing store and buy a couple of outfits — then no one will ever mistake you for a tourist,” says travel expert Johnny Jet (aka John E. DiScala).

Most Americans have a certain way of dressing when traveling overseas that screams they are from the States. Don’t be that person.

Whether it is wearing ball caps, sports team shirts, white tennis shoes and socks, well-worn Levi’s, polo shirts, American logos, or backpacks filled with all your important papers and jewelry, these are fashions you may what to change while abroad.

Before coming to Europe, do not forget these 3 important points:

What to wear in europe: 10 ways to dress more with european style when in europe, 1. wear clean-cut conservative clothes.

what is tourist outfit

Another tip: Don’t wear workout clothes and athleisure wear! People will most likely stare at you unless you are actually working out, of course.

When you put your packing list together for what to wear in Europe, try picking up some clothing items at the following stores for fashionable European wear:

H&M — A Swedish clothing company that is popular all over Europe and in the US. Reputation for fast fashion without high price tags.

Urban Outfitters – Urban Outfitters has spread across Europe and can be found in a few countries.

Zara — Located the world over but with a heavy presence in Europe. A Spanish retail store that sells fashionable clothes and some beautiful travel dresses.

Ellos – Founded in 1947, they are Sweden’s leading online department store, with collections that reflect Swedish lifestyle & design aesthetics in sizes 10+. (My favorite)

2. Go Neutral

Ditch the camouflage, loud colors, and dizzy patterns for timeless pieces, wardrobe staples, and conservative colors like black, navy, blue, beige, tan, and gray.

Make sure your clothes fit well and not be loose or baggy, but also not too tight. Wear things you feel comfortable in.

Jeans, especially skinny jeans, are worn by many Europeans, but they don’t make for great travel pants, as they take very long to dry.

Build a European Fashion capsule wardrobe for your trip with pieces that you can layer and mix and match and wear with each other.

Wear colors that locals wear. Especially in the colder months, many Europeans wear black or muted colors paired with one or two colorful accessories . For example, brightly-colored and loud Hawaiian shirts should only be worn while on the islands and not while in Europe.

3. Bring comfortable walking shoes

what is tourist outfit

No cheap flip-flops or colorful running shoes, either. White and black sneakers are comfy and common and a great choice for exploring.

European women wear heels a lot, but they are used to walking on cobblestoned streets. We recommend leaving them at home or only bringing them for special occasions when you know you won’t walk too far.

Keens , Clarks , and Naturalizer make very comfortable walking shoes that will let you put some miles on your feet without a problem. In the colder months, boots are very fashionable and common. Wear them on the plane to cut extra costs for overweight luggage.

4. Do Europeans Wear Shorts?

Unfortunately, there is no clear-cut answer. It depends. European fashion is usually a bit more conservative, but Europeans actually wear shorts – when they are on vacation or doing outdoorsy activities. Strolling through the city or in a museum? Not so much.

Though you may increasingly find shorts in southern Europe and on younger people, generally speaking, it’s best to wear long/capri pants or skirts and say “no” to shorts. Especially American-style khaki cargo shorts, which are viewed as a trademark of American tourists. If you must wear them, save them for beaches and hikes .

Also, keep in mind that in many countries (mainly Spain, Italy, Portugal, and some parts of Eastern Europe etc.) you will have to cover up when you visit churches or religious places of worship. Usually, the rule is covered below the knee and no tank tops. This rule includes men, women, and children. We recommend carrying a large scarf to cover up. See more info below.

5. Leave the baseball cap behind

Baseball caps are considered American and will have you stick out in a crowd. The same is true with sun visors – avoid wearing them, except for outdoor activities or on the beach. Those are simply not part of the average European dress code and will make you stand out as a tourist.

6. Accessorize with scarves

what is tourist outfit

For the ultimate European fashion touch, wear a scarf. That holds true for both men and women. Also, women may want to carry a headscarf for religious visits.

This scarf might be a good investment: It has a secret pocket that can hide your passport, money, or cell phone and is perfect for travelers in Europe.

7. Leave the bling behind

Don’t advertise yourself as a mark by wearing expensive jewels and bling. Instead, travel with costume jewelry – anything you don’t mind losing.

8. Avoid U.S. logos and go slogan-free

Best to avoid advertising you are American by wearing or carrying American logos such as Coach handbags, Nike, Abercrombie, or American football jerseys. Try to go slogan-free to add mystery to where you’re from.

9. Bring a smaller backpack to wear in front

The large backpacks that many Americans wear on their backs are easy targets for thieves. Consider using a smaller pack you can don in front, especially when taking public transportation and when in crowds or at popular tourist spots.

Also, a good idea is to get one of the PacSafe backpacks that have multiple anti-theft mechanisms to keep your belongings safe. Another option is this  over-the-shoulder travel purse by Travelon  that boasts stainless steel wire mesh to prevent slash-and-grab thefts.

10. Be religiously respectable

Avoid sleeveless shirts, shorts, and plunging necklines for the ladies. Dress conservatively in any country with fundamental religious views.

On another trip to the Blue Mosque in Turkey, one of our female members was told her pants were too tight (she was wearing black leggings under a tunic-type travel dress). She was issued a long skirt to wear over them before she could enter the Mosque.

Just be mindful of what the locals are wearing and have a plan b: Pack a scarf or cardigan to cover up if necessary. And maybe this book can help you with some more European-style advice and tips on what to wear in Europe.

European Fashion FAQs

Can you wear sneakers in europe.

Yes, you can. However, I would stick to more muted colors like black, white, navy or tan vs neon-colored sneakers. White sneakers are very popular in Europe at the moment and are often paired with jeans but also cute summer dresses.

Can you wear shorts in Europe?

Yes, you can. However, most Europeans only wear them when on vacation and in more outdoorsy settings, on the beach, or while sightseeing in more rural areas. Most Europeans would not wear them when going out for dinner, inner-city sightseeing, or during city tours, wine tastings etc.

Do you have to cover when visiting churches in Europe?

Yes, in most cases, specifically in Catholic churches. If you are wearing shorts or skirts that end above the knee, or a sleeveless top, I recommend you bring a scarf or two to cover up. This rule also applies to men, women, and children.

10 Outfits to Pack if Your Summer Travel Plans Include a Big City

When we think of summer vacation , we typically think of somewhere tropical and relaxing, right? If your idea of a perfect vacation is spending the day on a boat in Ibiza that's lovely, but a summer vacation doesn't have to include sand in your toes (and your swimsuit, your bag, etc.). If exploring a new city by going to the latest hot spots, visiting museums, and photographing the famous landmarks in a concrete jungle is more your speed, I'm right there with you.

If places like London , Milan, Tokyo, New York City, Paris, and Amsterdam are calling your name this summer, you're going to have to plan your wardrobe accordingly. Vacationing somewhere tropical or rustic comes with pretty obvious wardrobe standards, but when you're traveling to an urban city, the white linen dress and flip-flops may not be the best choice. It's best to prioritize polished outfits that are still appropriate for the warm weather, and comfortable enough to accommodate lots of walking. So, I'm here to assist. I found ten excellent outfit examples that are perfect for big-city vacations. Keep scrolling to start planning (and shopping) for your chic summer vacation wardrobe.

What to Wear in New York City

Written by: Renée Olson

Table Of Contents

New York City: the Big Apple, the City that Never Sleeps! New York is a hot destination for travelers all over the world and a city we all love. There’s great food, cool new spots around every corner, and so much to see and do no matter what you’re interested in.

This is one of the most versatile metropolises in the world, so naturally, potential activity combinations on a given day are limitless; you could cycle across the Williamsburg bridge, captain a boat in Central Park, pose with taxidermy elks in the Natural History Museum, and go hoarse at Mamma Mia on Broadway. And then there’s the coffees, cocktails, brunches, diners, and all the other urban wonderland clichés that make New York New York.

What Should I Wear in New York?

The most important factors in planning and packing for New York are the activities you’ll be doing on your trip AND the weather.

Always, always, always check the weather forecast before your trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a  travel capsule wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of  packing cubes  to compress your clothing.

While we’ll be sharing seasonal outfit ideas below, there are a few essentials you’ll want to bring to New York regardless of when you visit.

Beyond these items shared below, you may need other essentials, depending on how you like to travel. This might include technology accessories, like chargers and a camera, and toiletries and styling tools.

Here’s our tips on comfortable walking shoes for travel !

Blondo Villa Waterproof Ankle Bootie

Comfort should be a top priority when it comes to footwear. The average New Yorker walks anywhere from 2 to 5 miles daily, and if you’re doing your job as a tourist dutifully, you’ll be hitting twice that. Keeping your feet happy is essential!

Best Ballet Flats For Travel: Hush Puppies

Of course, it can be tempting to prepare for the glamour of Manhattan panoramic nightlife with 7-inch heels, but we recommend bringing flats, which are more comfortable and packable than heels (or bringing a pair of foldable ballet flats in your bag).

Most Comfortable Walking Shoes: Go Walk 4 Pursuit Sneakers

Choose classic leather boots with a slight heel, flats with a great shape, or fashionable sneakers . Skip brand new shoes or shoes that are too tight, uncomfortable, or have been known to give blisters. In general, many New Yorkers skip wearing sandals.

Rebecca Minkoff Julian Backpack

Since you’ll be out and about all day long, you’ll need a great day bag that can take you from Brooklyn to Uptown and back again. They key is choosing a bag with great structure and style, not necessarily an expensive price tag.

Neutral colors work great, especially black, which won’t show dirt as easily. This can be a leather tote or even a chic backpack, but just make sure it matches your outfits and has plenty of room. At TFG, we are huge fans of the Rebecca Minkoff Julian backpack . You can see our  full review here .

Day to Night Accessories

You may not have time to go back to your hotel to change, but that’s okay. New Yorkers often head straight to happy hour from the office, so follow their lead.

Stash a statement necklace or earrings in your bag so you can be ready for dinner in a flash. Add a bold lip on your way to the restaurant for instant glam. When your outfits are simple and stylish, you’ll be ready for anything.

Oversized Polarized Sunglasses

Sunglasses are the perfect way to add some mystery to your New York outfit, even if you aren’t visiting in the sunny summer.

Even if rooftop lounging and skyline lamenting are not activities that appeal to you, you will at some stage take your cynical self from a subway station to your destination. These commutes can be 20 minutes of walking in blinding brightness.

What to Wear in New York in Summer

Many New Yorkers escape to the beach in the summer, leaving the city extremely laid back. The temperature spikes in July with an average of 76°F / 25°C, but this can fluctuate and decrease at night, so you’ll need to be prepared if you’re out all day. That said, it can get very hot and humid in the city in the summer, and sometimes it stays hot into the night.

On top, think cropped camis, deep V halters, and blouses. Pair them with equally cool and comfy maxi skirts, culottes, and light denims. Playsuits and jumpsuits can be great, but avoid tight body cons of any design, as it’s icky to get sticky when you’re on the go for hours.

Easy denim with gorgeous sandals and a breezy top will be your uniform. Add dresses or skirts to the mix to keep cool.

Mid-summer Manhattanites are AC-crazy. This is the case for pretty much everywhere indoors, but is particularly pertinent when you’re spending the day in and out of multiple freezing shops.

A light outer layer is essential; I opt for thin trench coats as they are equally cost/heat/trend effective, but a crew neck sweater or hoodie will do the job.

What to Wear in New York in Fall

Fall fashion is a favorite in New York. Chic booties, dark denim, and a blanket scarf or cape will keep you warm. Pair dresses with tights for mild weather. Add other accessories like a wide brim hat or leather jacket for added interest.

What to Wear in New York in Winter

Baby, it’s cold outside! Walking from place to place can be brutal. Choose a neutral colored coat in a classic silhouette. A trench coat with a cinched waist will pair well with anything.

A scarf, gloves , and knit hat will keep you warm and accessorized. Dress in layers using wool, chunky knits, and even tights under jeans on a particularly chilly day. We love these thermals to help us stay warm no matter what!

Shopping in New York

It’s not a secret that New York is considered one of the world’s best shopping destinations. The famous city line towers over you as you wander in awe about how a real Carrie Bradshaw felt when she stepped into the swanky city of Manhattan or how Gossip Girl’s Blair managed to buy all of her heart’s desire.

The Upper East Side is the place to go to for many designer fashion stores; this is the place where you can find the most elegant department stores for fashion and home goods.Renowned names such as Vera Wang has her flagship store located in the area, as well as other prominent designers in the city.

Like a contemporary fairy land to fashion and shopping enthusiasts, New York is the home to many iconic stores such as Macys, Bloomingdales, and every girl’s favorite, Tiffany & Co. This is also the place to find other equally popular malls such as Saks 5 th Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman.

Accommodations in New York

We love  Airbnb for accommodation in New York. Sign up here  for a free $40 credit!

I prefer to book “the entire home” instead of opting for shared accommodation on Airbnb. Aside from safety, I also like to feel like I’m living in the destination. It’s a small taste of local life plus you get more amenities than you would at a hotel such as a kitchen and washing machine.

Read these  Airbnb tips  for more info!

If you prefer the convenience and comfort of a hotel room, I like using both  Agoda.com  and  Hotels.com . Tip: Hotels.com gives you a free night for every ten nights you book!

For hostels, we recommend  Hostelworld  and  Hostelbookers . Always read the reviews before booking to get the best idea if the hostel is right for you. Some are quiet and family friendly while others are known for their party atmosphere.

Not sure about staying at a hostel?  Read this.

New York City is one of the world’s fashion capitals! If you’re ever in doubt, stick to the classics. You’ll be fashionable and beautiful in any season.

Hi! We are headed to NYC for Thanksgiving this year with our three kids, ages 9 and below. Which bag would you suggest as I know it will be extremely crowded and I want a balance of not too much bulk navigating through the crowds (we are going to the Macy’s parade), safety and being able to throw in smaller items for kids if needed. I have really enjoyed your site so much and have been agonizing over whether to get a backpack or crossbody. Help! Thanks. 🙂

Andrea

Thanks so much for this article! I live in Western Mass so things are a little less fashionable here. Going to NYC today (Mid-May) for a fancy work dinner and conference the next day, so am going for the all-black capsule idea with a flower-embroidered black cocktail dress (w/black cardigan) for dinner, then black blouse, leggings and a nice scarf (same cardigan) for the conference. I really appreciate the ideas!! Black patent strappy flats for both outfits.

Hi Andrea, so pleased you found this article helpful for tips for your packing! Your outfits sounds fantastic! Have an awesome time! ?

On our way Thursday for 4 days to take in a couple Concerts, some great food and our fav night spots. My first trip was 30 yrs ago. Never gets old. This was helpful. I usually over pack. First trip…heels and blisters. Learned my lesson.

Hi Donna, so pleased you found the article helpful! Hope you have an incredible trip and enjoy your concerts!! 🙂

Valerie Burgess-Rostek

I love you blog posts. Your shoe recommendations are amazing. I plan on purchasing some for my upcoming trip to nyc. Thanks so much.

Maeve Butler

good article – as a longtime NYer, just adding a tip or two. Our summers have been arriving a little later these past few years – rainy, chilly days persist into late May – but when summer does arrive, it’s very hot and sticky. Rather than the 76 F average cited, be prepared for days above 90 F. As for shopping, go downtown – Soho for high fashion, Nolita, the East Village and Williamsburg for emerging designers and NY hipster style.

Hi Maeve, thank you for your comment, so happy you enjoyed the article!! Thank you for sharing your tips for what to pack for NY, always fantastic to hear from a reader who lives there!! 🙂

Angela

Perfect, this was exactly what I was looking for. I’m trying to not over pack but still be ready for a full day and into the evening before having to go back to our room. I’m excited to check it all out for my 40th coming up 🙂 Thanks!

Hi Angela, thank you so much for your comment, so glad you found the article helpful! Have a fantastic trip to New York and an amazing 40th birthday! 🙂

Robin

Some great suggestions. I visit NYC almost Every year, but different seasons. Thank you!

Hi Robin, thank you so much for your feedback, glad it was useful! 🙂

Judy

I’m planning a 2 week holiday in NY from mid April 2020. I am getting conflicting reports from friends about the weather and April is not a good time to go to NY. Consequently my issue is what to wear? I live in the tropics in Far North Queensland Australia where it is usually warm -hot all year round.

Hi Judy, in NY April is the beginning of Spring, so I would totally recommend packing a lightweight jacket which you can layer over your clothes if the temperatures drop. I would suggest that you research what the weather can be like at that time of year based on previous years weather forecast and then you could start to plan your packing. You may find TFG’s signature packing lists for ideas for a capsule wardrobe and how many clothing items you should pack useful so that you are not packing lots of clothes and shoes and then no wearing them: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/functional-and-fashion-packing-list/ The key to rewearing clothes is to choose things you really love to wear at home and choosing very different but versatile items that can mix and match so you can create a variety of outfits. I would highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post your question there about what to wear for New York: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that have the best advice and recommendations to share. Hope this helps. Have an awesome trip!
