Dodge Journey Check Engine Light On: Why and What to Do

The check engine is the most common warning light that appears in the Dodge Journey’s instrument cluster.  Well over half of this site’s content is related to solving the various reasons why the check engine light comes on.

The good news is that the check engine light indicates that there are Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in your Journey’s computer , which is a very good thing.  DTC’s really help save time determining what is wrong with your vehicle.

The check engine light is often referred to as the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Service Engine Soon light.  All three terms are 100% interchangeable.

How to Reset the Check Engine Light

Common questions, what are trouble codes.

Trouble codes are a number sequence of letters and numbers that correspond with a standardized list of problems that can occur in any vehicle, including the Dodge Journey . Some of them are Dodge specific, while most have the same meaning no matter who made the vehicle.

Common OBD II Codes 

The most common of all trouble codes is P0420 (it indicates your Dodge Journey’s catalytic converter isn’t scrubbing pollutants efficiently).

Here are some of the other most common codes:  

• P0442 – Small EVAP leak (most commonly fixed by tightening a loose gas cap or replacing it)
• P0300 – Random misfire (bad ignition coil(s), spark plugs, or spark plug wires).
• P0128 – Engine running too cool (almost always caused by a thermostat that’s stuck open)
• P0172 – Air Fuel mixture too rich (there are many causes, including oxygen sensors, leaking injectors, or too much fuel pressure)

The most common codes are related to the emissions system .  Some of them are as easy to fix as replacing your Journey’s.  Others require serious diagnostic tests from a repair shop.

How to Pull Trouble Codes on the Dodge Journey

You can either pull the trouble codes from your Journey’s PCM (Powertrain Control Module) yourself, or you can bring your vehicle to a parts store or shop to have it scanned.

Pull Them Yourself  

You can put a scan tool into the OBD II port and pull codes out of the diagnostic system yourself.  Any vehicle made for the 1996 model year and up uses the same protocol.

You can usually find the OBD II port underneath the Journey’s steering wheel. The exact location of the port is going to depend on what model year you have. If you don’t see it check the owner’s manual or do a quick google image search.

Once your scanner is online, you can pull the codes. You should see a retrieve codes option.

Take Your Carortruck to a Shop or Parts Store

If you don’t have a scan tool, you can take your Journey to the local parts store.  Most of them are happy to pull the codes for you for free . 

A lot of auto shops also offer free scan service, but you may find pressured into authorizing whatever repairs they suggest on the spot.

Once you have the codes in hand, you can look them up and determine what’s wrong with your Journey.

There are three ways to reset the Dodge Journey’s check engine light.  We recommend trying to identify the problem and fixing it before resetting the check engine light.

1. Fix and Wait

The best way to clear the check engine light is to pull the trouble code, identify and fix the issue and then drive your Journey around until the module that threw the code recognizes that the problem is fixed. 

Sometimes it can take a few drive cycles for your vehicle’s check engine light to shut down.  Other times, it’ll happen as soon as you fire the vehicle up.  Some folks prefer to clear the code and see if it comes back on

2. Use an OBDII Scanner

You can use an OBDII scanner to turn off your Journey’s check engine light.  The catch is, that if you don’t fix the problem, the light will turn on again.

This is done by connecting a scan tool to your Journey’s PCM and choosing the “clear codes” option.

Once you’ve identified and fixed the issue, wait for three or four days of normal driving to see if the Check Engine Light turns back on.

If it does not come back on after this period, then you can assume that your Dodge Journey is fixed and the light won’t be turning back on.

3. Disconnect the Battery

If you’ve identified and fixed the issue that caused your Journey’s Check Engine Light to come on, resetting the light is as simple as disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. This can be done by unhooking both cables from the battery terminals (negative cable first) and waiting 30 seconds before reconnecting them.

Once the battery is reconnected, your Check Engine Light should be reset and should no longer be illuminated. If the light does come back on again after you reset it, then it means that the issue has not been properly fixed and needs further attention.

Will a Vehicle Fail Inspection With the Check Engine Light On

If you are looking to get your Dodge Journey through emissions and the check engine light is on, it is an automatic fail in almost every State in the Union.  It doesn’t matter why the check engine light is on, it only matters that a code is stored. 

Here’s a list of the emissions regulations of each State .

You can’t reset a check engine light to circumvent emissions requirements.  When you reconnect the battery, the OBD II system is going to need several drive cycles to qualify to take an emissions test, which will give it enough time to recognize the issue.

Can You Drive With the Check Engine Light On?

Whether you can drive your Journey with the check engine light on depends on the code(s) that triggered the check engine light.  

You certainly can’t drive the Dodge Journey with the check engine light flashing.   A flashing check engine light indicates that there is a serious problem with the engine.

Annoying gas cap check engine light!?!

I'm really getting pissed off at my truck lately. No matter how I tighten my gas cap I still throw a code. I had the same problem with the stock cap, and now with the locking cap. When you guys tighten your gas cap until it clicks, is it still loose? Mine stays on there but it just seems like the locking threads don't do much. After I tighten it until it clicks I can jiggle it back and forth. :VHOT: Anyone have a similar problem and what did you do to resolve it? Thanks, Brian  

I wonder if a big "O" ring on the inside of the cap would make it tight enough.  

Make sure you get three clicks on it or you will get the light. I went to Autozone and bought a new nonlocking cap and haven't had a problem since.  

My friend just took his to the dealer for the same thing. They replaced the gas cap for $79.00. They said it had a pin hole as they ran a pressure test through the system. Me personally if I threw that code I would just spend the $15.00 to buy a new one.  

This has happened to me ever since i got my truck!! I actually failed Marta the other day after waiting in line for an hour because of this crap!!!!

somtimes the aftermarket caps arent nearly as good as an oem. might want to check into the oem cap.

I thought that was my problem...tried a new cap, but found the problem to be a bad hose under the truck in front of the fuel tank, near the evp cannister....got new one from dodge...about 10bucks.....installed, no problem since then been over 3 months

p0440 is named "very small evap leak" meaning it could be a gas cap or a pinhole leak in any of the lines. They are truly fun to find if you don't have the correct diagnostic equiptment.  

Had the gas cap issue with my Dakota. Whenever I got the code, I sprayed some WD-40 into the little hole in the center of the cap and spread a thin layer of lithium grease on the O-ring. I'd re-set the computer - - and it would last for a few months before I had to do it again. Guess I should have bought a new gas cap - but after a while I traded the Dak in on my Ram. That seemed to fix the problem (knock on wood)  

Check all of the hoses in the evap system. I had cracks in all of the hoses in the evap system and I was getting the same p0440 code. Once I replaced the hoses, no code. Total cost for the hoses was approx 35.00.

mine came on once, was simply because had'nt closed the cap right..  

mine was a hose issue. no code after replaced the hose.  

Just keep driving the truck the code will go away on its own. Mine has done this 3 times all ready. It's a pain in the ass to run to the dealer for a stupid gas cap code.  

... I read the cap and it said that it would give the CEL and I started the truck up with the cap off..... put it in in drive and moved foward a few inches and nothing.... guess my truck doesnt pick it up.  

It has to be off for a longer time than that to set a code. Not sure exactly how long. Otherwise every time you stopped to fuel up without shutting the engine off your CEL would come on.

I got the locking gas cap oem for 15 bucks no problems as of yet ..glad i saved my old nonlocking one ...just in case

How to Reset the Warning Light Gas Cap That Is Loose or Missing

Modern cars and trucks have an automotive diagnostic system known as OBD-II (on-board diagnostics). This system monitors a number of engine and emissions-related components to ensure that everything is in working order. If your gas cap is not properly attached, you may see a "Check Engine" light or a "Loose Cap" warning light on the dash. You can either tighten the cap and wait for the system to reset itself when it determines the problem is fixed, or you can use an OBD-II code scanner to manually reset the system.

Turn off your vehicle's engine. Push button to unlock the gas cap door , if your vehicle is equipped with a locking gas cap door. This is usually located on the floorboard next to the driver side seat, or beneath the steering column.

Step to the gas cap door. Open the door. Grasp the gas cap handle and twist it counterclockwise to unscrew it. Remove it.

Replace the gas cap. Removing and replacing it ensures the thread seals properly, in case it wasn't before. Turn the gas cap clockwise to tighten it. Continue turning until you hear it click three times. This ensures it's seating properly.

Close the gas cap door. Return to the cabin. Crank the engine and drive your vehicle for a day. The OBD-II system will automatically reset the "Loose Cap" or "Check Engine" light.

Use an OBD-II code scanner if the warning light does not disappear. Connect to the OBD-II port beneath the steering column. This port looks similar to a computer printer port. Push the "Reset" button on the code scanner to clear the system.

Continue driving the vehicle. Pay attention to the dashboard warning lights to ensure the light does not come back on. If it does, the gas cap may be faulty. Visit an automotive parts store or dealership service department to order a new gas cap.

I got gas cap light the other day checked cap looks good did not go out , tonight got gas cap again and than check engine. checked cap again look over engine drove home on the way stoped for gas filled up tank had about 1/2 a tank. got in started up no gas cap or check engine what gives  

My Nitro does the same thing....lol But the light always goes off after I replace the cap on and start driving!

the evap. system isn't really that smart. it isn't set up to tell if you left the gas cap off or even if the gas cap is bad. but it can tell if it has a leak in the evap. system and can determine if it is in the tank area or not. if a leak is detected in the fuel tank area the computer will turn on the check gas cap light on the first trip and if on the second trip it fails again then it will turn on the check engine light. it first turns on the check gas cap light because the most common evap. leak is the gas cap. it is either bad or someone didn't get it on tight. if a gas cap doesn't fix it then you may need a nvld or really have an evap. leak.  

if the seal is a little hard you can wipe a small amount of canola oil on the rubber seal (canola oil doesn't get as much static meaning less dirt/dust attraction) which helps also keep them pliable.. we even do that to our rubber seals on our fire hoses now....  

This happened to me. I just bought a new cap, took 4 days for the light to go out. You have to wait for the car system to do a self check and see that its ok.  

You don't have to wait if you have a snap on modis like I do and can force the test when ever I want. But that's one of the plus sides to being an auto tech and having too many tools.  

Maybe? It may be depending on the FLASH VERSION of the Nitro. On mine I had it show up twice and both timeI had the shopclear the error.  

This happened to me too. I just bought a new cap, and the light didnt go out.i read a lot about the evap system and find out a part called "leak detector" ,this part is reponsible for the gas cap light. the part cost me 10 bucks on the dealer and as soon i installed the problem was solved!. this part is located on the same side of the gas cap below the bumper cover conected to the evap canister.part number # 04891685AB  

Check engine light came on my 2009 Nitro. Code showed gas cap. Paid $30.00 for MOPAR gas cap at dealer. Check engine light went out. Just hit 1/2 tank gas and the light has come back on. Suggestions??

2007 SLT check engine light and the word 'gascap' lit up at the bottom of speedometer. I replaced the gascap with a cheap Wally World imitation and it worked for aprox 1500 miles. This time i went OEM but the engine light stayed and I"m due for emission. Any advice? Thanks

My code is P0456. Light went out for a bit once I purchased New Mopar has cap from dealer. As soon as I hit 1/2 tank the light came back on. I buy my gas at Costco. Could that be my issue?  

Do you pump your own gas? I know in Oregon you can't. An attendant has to do it for you. Sometimes they do not click the cap several clicks and this will happen. P0456 = Evaporative emission (EVAP) system - very small leak detected. Possible causes; Mechanical fault, hose connection(s), EVAP pressure sensor.  

Yes, I pump my own gas. Unfortunately there are no full service stations in Georgia (Atlanta) or Montgomery, Alabama. Those are the only places I fuel up. I make sure to do 3 clicks on my cap at each full up.  

Personally I do 6 or more clicks. But that is just how I have always done it. Since it is a very small leak detected it could just be the cap or rubber seal on the cap. #2 might be a crack in a hose, usually the one with this problem is under the hood. It goes to the purge solenoid. Which is located right next to the battery on a little metal bracket. The hose gets hot from the exhaust manifold and deteriorates. #3 would be the ESIM and or the rubber seal behind it. See this thread , Post 12 Green in Pics & seal ,#2 in second Pic.

Both the ESIM (switch [green in Pics]) and hose can be done DIY with no real special tools needed. The top of the hose at the purge solenoid. under the hood, is easy access. The other end can be harder. The ESIM switch, has wing tabs that have to be squeezed together to get it off the canister. It does take quite a bit of effort to make them let loose so you can remove it. Kinda easy access under the LR corner of the body, under the fuel filler door area. Both use quick-release hose connections.  

Thank you for all your help. I work at a High School in Atlanta that has auto shop. I will talk with the instructor and have him show me where these parts are located. If I don't feel comfortable doing it myself, I have a backyard mechanic that can help me. I will try turning the gas cap a few more clicks before I do anything else.  

Finally got my son to replace hose for me. My purge solenoid has two hoses (one on side & one on bottom). Replaced hose on bottom (P/N 52125201AD or AF) - it was most expensive one @ $42.00. That is usually my luck if it's not the most expensive, it's not my issue..... It worked. Check engine light is out and I just dropped below 1/2 tank gas. THANK YOU Scar0 for all your help.

Ok, After driving with the dinging for about 2 weeks I took it to a local Chrysler dealer (since I don't know of anyone near my job that I can trust and my old mechanic passed away last year) The dealer replaced the gas cap and a esim valve and the error went away..... for about 4 days..... Took it back to the dealer today (since I ASSUMED it was related to the original issue & repair). According to the dealer, there is a vent nipple on the tank that is damaged. Because of this problem, the message and the check engine light is on. To repair will require replacing a nipple AND the entire fuel tank!! About $1300 in labor, parts and repair. I am told the part is around $10 so it sounds like it's a replaceable item. So why replace the tank ? The dealer's recommendation is to just live with the dinging and the check engine light or pay the $1200 to fix it. This sounds like total BS! I told him to button it up and I will pick it up. I will NEVER set foot in that Chrysler Dealer again. Not only because of this problem, but when I came in with a 10% off coupon from a local paper for the first repair, the cashier told me to see service to "adjust" the bill. They did! They reduced it by $22 (10% off the original bill) THEN they added an additional $15 for disposal (of which they left the items on my passenger seat!). I didn't catch it till the next day since I was in a hurry. Net savings???? $7 :banghead: SOME 10% !!!!! QUESTION: Is there such a vent nipple? Does it require to replace the fuel tank? Anyone else had this issue ??? If you are in the West Side Metro Detroit Michigan area, do you know of a good mechanic ?

Well then I guess you're in good shape there... :roll: Beyond that, the term they're using is a little vague - vent nipple - it's possible they mean the rollover valves, which I believe are glued to the tank. That may be why they just want to sell you a new tank. Try going back and say, "show me" - since you're a V6 you have the slightly smaller tank, they might actually have one in stock vs. the larger tank for the V8's which are flying off the shelves due to the mass number of replacements going on right now for the "stalling after fillup" issue. Ok, I picked up the Magnum. Best part was there was no charge for the service. Worst part. I started to back away only to hear some scraping (sounded like a brake pad dragging) while backing up. When driving forward, I had major clunking and banging from the rear. Why ????? When the mechanic lifted the passenger's rear side, he found that NONE of the lug nuts were tight Several were just started. The service manager apologized but stated that the guns sometimes misfire. The mechanic responded that "it was no misfire, he forgot to tighten the lugs" The part number is for the entire gas tank (68051910AB) not for a valve.  

WOW. That's the second time I've heard of such a thing happening at a dealer, right here on this forum. Service manager is covering his own a$$ or is a complete moron, impact guns don't "misfire" and any tech deserving enough to touch another person's car shouldn't be using an impact to tighten lugs in the first place; the guy needs some serious re-training. At least he was honest enough to admit he forgot; for that I'll give him credit, but it's still unacceptable. We all make mistakes but we hope we only make them on our OWN vehicles, not somebody else's, that we were entrusted to and paid to service correctly. I'm not familiar with the steps taken to replace the tanks on these cars but why was the wheel off anyway? Richard

I'm going to bet that the nipple is permanently glued into the tank and is not replacable. The nipple sits on top so that the fumes rise and drift through the emissions lines to the charcoal cannister. The question you want to ask them is what did they do to determine the nipple is damaged? The fact that they reset your PCM tells me they might be grasping at straws. We know they did a reset because the emissions test cycle takes several days to complete. Fixing an emission leak doesn't shut the light off immediately. If you want to get this fixed you need to start with a smoke test. This is roughly $100. This will reveal exactly where the emissions are escaping. If it is indeed the nipple on the tank then it's likely a $1300 job to drop and replace the tank. However, these vehicles are now between 8 and 12 years old. The lines could be compromised depending on where you live (salt). It's much cheaper to replace emission hoses than the tank. However, if it's a line that actually connects to the tank it likely has to come down regarsless. Ask your dealer how they concluded it was a broken nipple. Have them put it on a lift and show you the broken nipple. If it's not in a spot where you can see it then they are guessing. See if they smoke tested before you pay them to do any work. Keep us posted . . .  

I don't think it was the mechanic that worked on the car that tightened the lugs when the problem was found. The Service Manager just called the person closest to the car to take a peek. I was told they took the wheel and inner fender off to get a closer look at the issue.  

I have a Diablo, so I can clear the light code. But, the gas cap message went away as well for a few days (the Diablo didn't do that) Could they have damamged something replacing the esim valve ? I have it set to go to another Chysler dealer (that I've used in the past and trust). They said something about a smoke test and they also said that their is a way to possibly repair the valve without replacing the tank. And even if the tank has to be replaced, it would not be anywhere near $1300.  

They take the wheel off to gain access to the wheel arche inorder to install the filler neck and presume connect up the charcoal canister. I still haven't taken my car to have gas tank replaced and or airbags for this reason. I wish they would give me the parts and for me to do it myself. At least I know it would be done right.  

"Air gun misfire." That's the first time I've heard that one and probably the worst BS line to date.  

My Magnum will not set a tire in that place again.

Gas Cap Warning Light

2013 Challenger R/T Classic, Refueled the car and the gas cap warning light has come on. I have repositioned the cap numerous times, and the warning is still on. Am I doing something wrong, or do I have bigger problems? Even though this car is 7 years old, it only has 13K miles on the odometer. I don't drive it all that often, and I am getting ready to put it away for the winter.  

Is the warning light the CEL? If so what is the error code? If the warning light arises because the cap is not sealed correctly the cap could be leaking. Remove the cap and examine the o-ring or whatever seal is present. Look for cracks, splits, any damage that could be an air/vapor leak. With another car I had the gas cap tether break. I bought a new cap. I looked at the old cap and the seal a flat ring of rubber was cracked and split. The cap was not leaking -- at least there was no CEL -- but it was probably very close to leaking. If the cap is not leaking then the problem lies elsewhere. If the CEL is on the error code associated with the CEL should provide a clue.  

Ordered an OEM cap for mine after doing a smoke test. Test was $80. Cap was $20~ on amazon. Got it in 2 days. No more warning lights. Mine is a 2012 with 20k miles. Worth just grabbing a new cap and trying that first.

CEL - Check Engine Light It could be a bad cap, try a new one. It could also be an imminent explosion, RUN!! ( It’s probably the first one though... )  

Doesn't it take a while for that gas cap warning light to go away? This might or might not apply here, but once upon a time I had a 2005 Mustang. One day I got gas and didn't tighten the gas cap all the way. I got the warning light. I retightened the gas cap. After doing some driving that day, the light was still on. It wasn't until the next day that the light went off. I never had another issue after that.  

Yeah, it will have to run the EVAP test again, and there are certain criteria that have to be met to even run it. Certain amount of gas in tank, engine off for a certain amount of time, etc. it’s not an instantaneous type thing in other words.  

The gas cap lights don't go away immediately. You might be able to get it gone by disconnecting the battery. Just know that if there is still a large EVAP leak it will return.

Old post but I just experienced the same issue. My '13 R/T showed a Gascap warning on the dash (in place of the odometer reading. I checked the cap and it was on tight. I had filled the tank about a week ago and used about 3/8 of the tank of gas when the warning appeared. I figured the O ring was bad. On inspection, it looked fine; but, it could be just a small nick my old eyes couldn't see. After driving about 25 miles I also got a CEL. After putting my code reader on it, I got an 0456 (IIRC) and it indicated a small vacuum leak in the emissions system. I've erased the codes. I still get the Gascap warning and figure I'll get another CEL before I get to replacing the gas cap. If that doesn't solve the issue, I'll be back asking for help. Nonetheless, reading this thread gives me hope and confirms what I figured I'd need to do. Thanks.
