The Gang Returns: The Always Sunny Podcast Is Coming Back to Philly in September
The show’s three creators will bring their popular podcast — and their new whiskey — to the Mann in September, and tickets go on sale this week.
Get our weekly picks of what to do this weekend and the latest on Philly's arts and entertainment scene.

It’s already been quite a year for the team behind It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia . Television’s longest-running live-action sitcom began its 16th season last week, and they’re just as depraved as ever. Leading up to the season premiere, they released a themed Monopoly game, as well as their own brand of whiskey . And their Always Sunny Podcast remains wildly popular.
The Always Sunny Podcast ‘s weekly installments are ostensibly about each episode of the TV series — sort of like a recap with the creators’ memories of writing and filming it — but always devolve into musings on everything from parking woes to tales of picking fights in the drive-thru while your kids sing showtunes in the backseat. In just a few months of broadcasting, the podcast has developed inside jokes (“cut that cut that cut that”), a cult following all of its own, and the same manic chemistry their TV counterparts have.
Last fall, they delighted Philly fans with live podcast tapings over two sold-out nights at the Met. Well, Sunny fans, get ready because the show’s co-creators Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, and Philly’s own Rob McElhenney are returning to Philly — this time to the Mann — on September 23rd. A presale for tickets will open on Wednesday, June 14th at 10 a.m. (use code “SUNNY”), followed by the general ticket sale on Friday, June 16th at 10 a.m. at LiveNation.com and thealwayssunnypod.com .
“We can’t wait to meet back up with our fans and have the best time ever. There’s nothing we enjoy more than being with all of the amazing Sunny fans out there especially if we can do it in Philly,” said McElhenny in a press release.
If last year is any indication, you’ll have to act fast: Their first September 2022 date sold out quickly.
From left, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, and Rob McElhenney in the Always Sunny Podcast live show at the Met / Photograph courtesy of Live Nation
Last year, the Always Sunny Podcast ended up adding a second Philly date — one that coincided with the Eagles’ home opener. The result was glorious , as both South and North Broad Street celebrated each Eagles touchdown in their own raucous way. Like the podcast, the live show was nominally about an episode, but went off on wild tangents, Eagles chants, and reflections on the co-creators’ friendship. “We truly love each other and we want to spend as much time as we can together. We’ll do it until the day we die,” said McElhenney on Sunny ‘s future during the September 19, 2022 show.
Now if only they’d film the show in Philly again.
Until then, get your finest Day Man suits, Birds of War beaks and Green Man onesies ready — fans dress to impress — and set whatever phone alarms you need to not miss out on what’s sure to be bonkers. (If you do miss out, they’ve also announced a show at Radio City Music Hall on October 12, 2023, but no thanks, New York.)
Four Walls, the brand of Irish American whiskey created by McElhenney, Howerton and Day, will also be available for purchase at the shows. The brand — named for the “four walls of the bar,” it seems? — began as a limited release to support bartenders. (All proceeds were donated to Pennsylvania Restaurant & Lodging Association’s HARP .) The pilot “Bartender’s Blend” launched in the United Kingdom this past spring and sold out quickly, so the Gang decided to make more. It’ll be “coming to bars later this year,” but you can follow their Instagram for more info (and more Always Sunny fun).

It's Always Sunny podcast: London date and how to get tickets
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia follows the lives of a group of delusional narcissists navigating their way around life, with hilarious (and mischievous) consequences.
Due to the immense popularity of the sitcom , a new podcast entitled The Always Sunny Podcast will feature the cast taking us back to the original days and seeing how far (if anywhere) they have come.
Rob McElhenney , Charlie Day, and Glenn Howerton, alongside host Megan Ganz, will be heading across the pond for two special shows.
Alongside bringing their acclaimed podcast to London ’s Royal Albert Hall , creators of the show and podcast are also set to delight fans in Dublin, Ireland.
What is The Always Sunny Podcast?
The podcast is a recap of the show by creator McElhenney featuring co-stars with special guests including Danny DeVito, Kaitlin Olson, David Hornsby, Mary Elizabeth, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The sitcom premiered on August 4, 2005, and quickly won a host of fans.
The series follows the hilarious exploits of “The Gang”, a group of misfits and somewhat degenerates who all run an Irish pub known as Paddy’s Pub in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The gang spend most of their time hatching a number of elaborate cons against each other, either for personal benefit or simply out of boredom.
Since the dark comedy first hit television screens, it quickly gained attention among fans, officially becoming the longest-running live-action sitcom in the US.
The low-budget show was described by creator McElhenney as “completely different, not something you’re seeing anywhere else” with “characters you’ve never seen before”.
If McElhenney’s name seems familiar it may be because he has been making headlines recently with pal Ryan Reynolds, with his hit show Welcome To Wrexham , where the two Hollywood stars buy and run a Welsh football club.

When is The Always Sunny Podcast?
Live tapings of The Always Sunny Podcast are in the diary for the Royal Albert Hall on April 16.
A matinée and evening performance are scheduled, where the cast will share “stories, laughs, and reflect on 20 years of making the hit series”.
The live tapings in Ireland will take place in Dublin’s 3Arena on April 17, at 6.30pm.
How to get tickets
Pre-sale tickets are on sale this Thursday (February 16) at 10 am, for priority members, at the Royal Albert Hall site.
The general sale will be on Friday, February 17, at 10am. Prices range from £40 to £125.
Tickets for the 3Arena are priced from €56.95.

Matt rife’s fans send him some seriously weird gifts, 30 random bits of trivia that are like a bento box for your brain, if roseanne barr could turn back time she’d tell her younger self to be ‘more offensive’, adam sandler honors ‘happy gilmore’ co-star carl weathers at postmortem walk of fame ceremony, glenn howerton confirms that ‘the always sunny podcast’ just sort of ended.
It’s been over a year since Glenn Howerton , Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day dropped the last episode of The Always Sunny Podcast , but Dolph Lundgren will have a giant nose for a head before we get another one.
When the stars and creators of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia first launched a sitcom rewatch podcast for their cult-beloved show back in late 2021, the side project originally looked to be yet another low-budget appeal to 2000s nostalgia along with the rest of the concerningly popular sitcom rewatch podcast genre. However, as The Always Sunny Podcast progressed and Howerton, McElhenney and Day’s incredible chemistry drew in more and more of the main show’s fanbase, the trio built the podcast into a professional production complete with a producer in Megan Ganz, an impressive guest list that saw Broadway superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda break down “ The Nightman Cometh ” and a cozy, sleek studio that, sadly, is no longer in the gang’s possession.

After over a year of radio silence from The Always Sunny Podcast , Rick Glassman asked Howerton about the state of the rewatch series on the most recent episode of his show Take Your Shoes Off , during which Howerton admitted that, due to his and his co-stars’ increasingly busy schedules, the podcast’s indefinite hiatus looks more permanent with every day that passes without a Vuori plug.
“We got rid of the podcast studio,” Howerton told his host, saying of the year-long drought of new discussions about old It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia episodes, “It just became logistically difficult to get the three of us in a room together and we didn ’ t want to do it on Zoom.”
Considering McElhenney spends most of his time on another continent playing his own real-life version of Football Manager , it ’ s easy to see how the “no remote work” policy of the podcast necessitated the show ’ s unceremonious end.
Said Howerton simply of The Always Sunny Podcast ’ s current and possibly permanent intermission, “We set it aside for a minute, and then a minute became months.” And, just as Mac and Charlie ’ s crime drama/hardcore porn film would have petered out into credits, so does the only rewatch podcast that was ever worth watching.
Always Sunny fans took the news of the podcast reaching the “S” stage of The D.E.N.N.I.S. System with mixed emotions as some optimists clung to the hope that, just like Dennis himself, The Always Sunny Podcast could return at any moment for another round of “Inspire Hope.” In a thread about Howerton ’ s comments on Take Your Shoes Off in the Always Sunny subreddit , one fan posited, “If they continue to take the advice from Larry David like they have. They probably don ’ t plan on ever saying this is the last season or the podcast is officially over. That way, when they get bored or have time and feel like making more episodes of Sunny or podcast, they can.”
But another less hopeful fan wrote, “Move past it.”
As if it were that easy.

Why It's Always Sunny Is Missing 5 Episodes On Streaming
Brilliant it's always sunny theory reveals everyone has been wrong about charlie for the last 19 years, 10 things about the matrix movies that made zero sense.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia could come to a close in plenty of wild ways, which could pay off the show's low-key emotional throughlines. The world of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is one of comically scummy trickery and dark comedy, with the long-running show's approach to an absurd group of friends pushing the line of decency at every possible avenue. Dennis, Dee, Mac, Charlie, and Frank have caused chaos all across Philadelphia (and beyond) across seventeen seasons, and look to expand their chaos with an upcoming season 17 of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia .
The longest-running American live-action sitcom ever, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will inevitably have to come to a close some day, whether due to the success of their stars or the natural end of the show. Despite the series being greenlit for season 18, Cracked reported how the creators behind the scenes have been thinking of the ending since season 9. The end could come to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia , and here are some of the wildest ways it could close out.
There are 5 episodes of It's Always Sunny In Philadephia that were pulled from Netflix and Hulu, all for the same reason - their use of blackface.
8 The Gang Gets Arrested
The gang could finally face consequences for all their terrible actions.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia 's inevitable finale could build to a wild turn for the Gang , such as getting arrested. Dennis, Mac, Charlie, Dee, and Frank have comitted a litany of crimes over the years, presumably with Frank's limitless cash flow helping deal with any problems. However, there could come a time when the charges are so large or the bill so high that Frank can't make it go away. This could set up the Gang to recreate another sitcom classic and recreate the controversial finale to Seinfeld . This idea has even been suggested by a fan theory on Reddit .
The theory suggests all the episodes of the series are a series of testimonies of the Gang's crimes . This could be an ideal way to bring back several of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia 's best guest stars to help close out the show. The show has even played with this format before, with season 5's "The World Series Defense" shifting between the Gang in court to the events they're describing. This could be a fun way for the series to make the Gang face consequences for their actions and bring up all the highlights of the previous seasons.
7 The Gang Dies
Season 11's "the gang goes to hell" could be teasing the show's final turn.
Another popular fan theory about It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is that the series is taking place in the afterlife, with the Gang trying to explain their actions on Earth to some unseen deity. This is also a format that the show has teased with in the past . The season 11 two-parter "The Gang Goes To Hell" initially appears to be showing the Gang appealing to God after their apparent deaths on a sinking cruise ship. However, the punchline revealed they were just speaking with an insurance agent for the cruise line and were perfectly fine.
While this means that ending might not be the conclusion of the show, it's possible It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia does explore the final fates of the Gang . That could be in the form of a flash-forward to their eventual fates or a sudden darkly comic conclusion to the show. Ending the show in the vein of Six Feet Under or The Sopranos would be a wild way to close out the show and brutally say goodbye to characters that fans have loved for almost two decades.
6 Dennis Kills The Gang
It's always sunny in philadelphia could become a horror story in the finale.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia could kill off most of the cast in a realization of their longest-running dark subplot. Introduced as a vain and selfish man, Dennis has steadily been developed into It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia 's most unsettling character. Episodes like season 6's "The D.E.N.N.I.S. System" and season 12's "Making Dennis Reynolds a Murderer" highlight Dennis' darker elements and imply he's a dangerous predator with a body count. Dennis has even attacked other members of the Gang before , and a wild ending for the show could see him do it again.
The show could close out by shifting gears back into horror, something It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has dabbled with in the past. Turning the final episode into a slasher movie with Dennis behind the killings would be a wild way to pay off the character's darkest instincts and actions. Dennis reaching a breaking point and slaughtering the entire gang might be the darkest way to end the show, but it could give the show's grim teases about Dennis' potential a killer payoff.
5 The Gang Faces The End Of The World
The fall of society might be the gang's time to shine.
An inherently wild way for the show to end would be for the series to buck it's typically grounded approach to the world and go big with an apocalyptic shift . It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has mined the absurd qualities of modern society plenty of times, with surprisingly quick fatal consequences awaiting characters like Country Mac and Maureen Ponderosa. Shifting gears and throwing those kind of stakes into a zombie apocalypse, nuclear war, or other end of the world scenario could be a fun way to highlight how surprisingly durable and adaptable the Gang has proven to be.
The skills they possess have made them detestable around most of society in Philadelphia, but their underhanded tactics and brutal methods might actually serve them well in a post-apocalyptic setting . It would be an incredibly wild ending given much of the show's grounded counter to the Gang's antics, but it could be exciting to see them reach their full potential as the monstrous kings and queen at the end of humanity.
A fan theory about It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia highlights how Charlie Kelly might be quietly the smartest character in the show.
4 Paddy's Pub Closes
It's amazing the bar is still open at all.
One of the most realistic endings of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia would be the closure of Paddy's Pub , with the often filthy looking bar finally being called out for the unsanitary condition that the Gang often leaves it in. Season 10's "Charlie Work" highlighted the challenges the bar faces in passing every health inspection, and Charlie's failure to recreate the success of that episode could doom the bar to an inglorious fate.
This would be the ultimate sign that the show has come to a close, shutting the doors of the bar once last time and ending things with the same kind of realistic bluntness that's often defined the show's approach to dry humor. This might also actually force the Gang apart on some level, with the group forced to get separate jobs and take different paths. T his sort of ending could be the perfect set up for the Gang going through a transitional phase , which could set up for different kinds of emotional climaxes.
3 The Gang Goes Their Separate Ways
There is no it's always sunny in philadelphia without the gang.
Maybe the saddest possible way to close out It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia , the show could conclude with the Gang going their separate ways. While Dennis and Dee have a blood connection, there's nothing strictly keeping the Gang together as it is . This is something the show has played with previously when Dennis briefly moved out of the city to be with his child in season 12's "Dennis' Double Life." The Gang could ultimately be pulled in different directions, either with new relationships or different jobs if Paddy's Pub closes.
This could even be a surprisingly realistic way for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia could end , with the Gang ultimately just drifting apart, as some friends do over time. It would give the show a bittersweet touch to close out on. Breaking up the Gang in the finale of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia could be the ultimate way for the creatives behind the show to close the book on the Gang once and for all. It would be a wild and unexpected way to end the series, especially if it leans heavily into the tragedy of the situation.
2 Frank Dies
Frank's send-off could be a wake for it's always sunny in philadelphia as a whole.
As the most chaotic member of the Gang, Frank has already had some close calls with death — but Frank passing away might be the most unexpectedly emotional way for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia to end. Frank Reynolds was introduced in season 2 and quickly escalated the true comic potential of the cast as a collective. This has also underscored his sheer dangerous potentialThe show has played up how frustrated the other characters can become with Frank's cruelty, but highlighted how they still need him in the Gang.
Frank is the most likely of the Gang to die sooner than the others, and it could leave the Gang shattered on a fundamental level and without the financial security Frank has always provided them. Paying tribute to Frank and his impact on their lives could be a fitting final act for the Gang to take, and could serve as the perfect external reason to also give an send-off to the series as a whole. Frank dying could be comically hilarious, sending the character off in a blaze of glory that closes out the show.
1 The Gang Cements Their Bonds
Even without paddy's pub, the gang could live on.
Perhaps the most likely element of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia 's inevitable ending is the reflection of the show's central themes about friendship . While they may turn on one another in a heartbeat, the group has acknowledged that they're only truly happy when they're together. It's been an element of the show since the early seasons, and has been reinforced in several recent episodes, including season 13's "The Gang Solves the Bathroom Problem," season 14's "Waiting for Big Mo," and season 15's "The Gang Carries a Corpse Up a Mountain."
It would leave the characters alive and capable of returning down the line, ending on a more open-ended note that confirms their dynamics while leaving the future open. Even if Paddy's closes, one of their number dies, or the world ends, it's possible that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will end with the Gang openly acknowledging their love for one another . Given the constantly sardonic and casually cruel touches of the Gang as a whole, seeing such a sweet ending would be surprising. However, it would be an effective and surprisingly sweet send-off to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia .
