Top Asia FAQs

When’s the best time to cruise to Asia?

We offer a wide variety of Asia itineraries with our revolutionized Celebrity Solstice ship sailing during the winter and Celebrity Millenium year round. Each region of Asia offers different experiences guests can enjoy.

The winter months, from November to February, are the ideal time to explore South Asia, including India and Sri Lanka, when the climate is less humid, giving you more energy for sightseeing.

Countries like South Korea and Japan are delightful all through the summer months and have perfect weather to lounge by their spectacular beaches.

The Lunar New Year usually falls in February, and this is a fantastic time to be in Asia, with widespread celebrations in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Is a cruise a good way to see Asia?

A cruise is the perfect way to see Asia. You’re able to visit multiple places in comfort, with no effort required on your part to get from one to the other. A Celebrity Asian cruise vacation takes you to some of the most exciting destinations in the world, from Japan and Hong Kong, to the island paradise of Bali.  As an example, in the space of just 12 nights, you could visit exciting cities like Singapore, to off-the-beaten path destinations in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

A 12-night Japan itinerary takes you to six contrasting destinations in Japan itself, as well as Busan in South Korea. You could also choose a 14-night itinerary from Singapore to Mumbai, which follows the coast of Malaysia, crosses the Indian Ocean, and then explores Sri Lanka and three ports in India.

Many of our itineraries include overnight stops in destinations including Hong Kong, Bangkok, Hanoi, Phuket and more, giving you time to experience local night markets and restaurants.

Where do Asia cruises depart from?

Celebrity offers a wide choice of cruises in Asia. Departure ports include Bali, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mumbai, and Tokyo.

Do I need visas to visit each country?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

The majority of Asian nations do not require a visa for entry, but some do. To visit India, for example, you will need to get a visa before you leave home.

What are the main ports of call on an Asian cruise?

Any cruise to Asia is packed with exciting ports, from vibrant cities to blissful beach locations on islands including Langkawi, Ko Samui, and Phuket.

To many, the real marquee ports are the cities like Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Mumbai, Tokyo, and Ho Chi Minh City. But often, it’s the places in between that leave just as great an impression, whether you’re exploring an exquisite temple in Kyoto or cruising the serene backwaters of Cochin on a rice barge.

What’s best about an Asia cruise with Celebrity is that our ships stay overnight in many ports, so you can really get to know a destination. In Hanoi, for example, you can enjoy the buzz of the city and spend a day sailing beautiful Halong Bay. In Bangkok, there’s time to see the shimmering Grand Palace as well as take a river cruise and browse colorful floating markets.

Are there any vaccination or health requirements?

There are no compulsory vaccinations to visit Asian countries, but it is recommended to be up to date with all your regular inoculations, including tetanus and hepatitis A. It’s important to consult your physician in advance to plan a vaccination schedule.

Celebrity’s Asian itineraries do not visit ports where malaria is known to be a high risk, so it is unlikely that you will need anti-malarial drugs—but again, check with your physician or travel health clinic in advance as everybody’s situation is different.

How do I handle currency exchange for the different countries visited?

Most places in Southeast Asia and Japan take credit cards, but you will need a small amount of local currency to shop in markets or buy souvenirs from vendors. For India, rural areas still have a cash economy, so you will need some rupees outside of the main urban areas.

While enthusiastic souvenir vendors may offer to take U.S. dollars, you will not get a good exchange rate, and you will be given change in local currency. If you choose to pay this way, make sure you know the exchange rate and what denominations local notes come in.

If you use an ATM on your travels, it’s safer to use one that’s attached to a reputable bank.

What languages are commonly spoken, and will I need a translator or phrasebook?

Dozens of different languages are spoken across Asia; India alone has 22 official languages. While it’s polite to offer a greeting in the local language, and helpful to know a few phrases, it’s not necessary to be fluent.

You will not need a translator on your travels in Asia. All guides on shore excursions speak English. A lot of signage is in English as well as the local language, especially in tourist areas. In many countries, such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and India, English is an official language, and in many others, it is taught in school as a second language.

What cultural and historical sites can I expect to see on excursions?

Our wide range of excursions takes you to all the main cultural sites in the ports we visit. You can explore historic George Town from Penang, and take in the buzz and bustle of Hong Kong’s various night markets on an after-dark tour.

See the temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok and visit the poignant Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima. Learn about Buddhism with a monk in Colombo, and explore the dazzling imperial city of Hue from Chan May, Vietnam.

Are there specific cultural norms or etiquette I should be aware of?

It’s a good idea to take a little time to understand the culture of the Asian countries you are visiting. Generally speaking, extreme politeness is important, as is taking the time to greet people, and remaining softly spoken.

Many Asian countries are Buddhist, in which case, always show respect to Buddha statues and temples and do not touch Buddhist monks. Do not point at people and do not be surprised if a local avoids eye contact during a conversation; this is a sign of respect. In Thailand, it is an offense to say anything negative about the royal family.

Try to understand the sense of “face” that is prevalent in Asian countries. Saving face is important; so, for example, a person may tell you what they think you want to hear rather than the reality, to avoid losing face. Shouting at someone causes you to lose face.

Japan in particular is a country with a complex social etiquette. Just a few include not tipping (it’s just not done here); never blowing your nose in public; taking off your shoes before entering a temple; and not blocking busy sidewalks in the densely populated cities.

If you’re visiting somewhere on a tour where specific etiquette is expected, your guide will point out all you need to know.

Top tip for your cruise to Asia

Prepare for the contrast in temperatures. Although cruising across Asia throughout most of the year you will find outdoor temperatures to often top 30 °C, air conditioning inside is cold. Bring a layer or two to wear when visiting inside shopping malls, restaurants and tourist attractions.

Top Asian cruise harbours

When you arrive at Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong, you will get a preview of what this amazing city has to offer. Colourful, full of life and with breath-taking scenery from the moment you arrive, the harbour acts as a gateway, inspiring you to explore the city further.

See Hong Kong from its highest and most picturesque vantage point at Victoria Peak. Take the tram up the steep 1,300 feet climb and save your energy for the Peak Circle Walk at the top, allowing you to appreciate Hong Kong from every angle.

A visit to the Tian Tan Buddha, or ‘Big Buddha’ is another rise above the city that provides spectacular views from the glass-bottomed cable car ride up and as Hong Kong’s most iconic attraction, it is one not to miss. --> Hong Kong cruises

Did you know…?

Hong Kong has more skyscrapers than New York City. In fact, it has more than anywhere else in the world, at 353 of these towering buildings with more than 40 floors.

The Port of Tokyo (Yokohama) provides the welcome to a capital city dazzling with the neon lights of modern, chic shopping, bustling street food traders and ultra, high-tech attractions. This is the city that never sleeps in the East.

Dine at the astonishing, 10-billion-yen worth, Robot Restaurant. This unique and crazy experience is robot entertainment on a new technological level.

For those seeking a quieter pace of life, Tokyo is steeped in history and its thousands of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples offer more contemplative, tranquil, yet equally spectacular places to explore.

If time allows, step outside the city boundaries and soak up the overwhelming beauty of the Japanese natural landscape. Standing at 3,776 metres, as Japan’s highest mountain, Mount Fuji and its surrounding Fuji Fives Lakes are simply stunning.

The Tokyo Tower, built on the model of the Eiffel Tower, stands 13 metres taller than its inspiration, but is only half the weight, due to advances in steel technology. --> Tokyo cruises

If you are searching for a clean, cutting-edge city that is continually reinventing and pushing the boundaries to amaze its visitors, then Singapore is your destination. Culture meets technology and action meets creativity, delivering new experiences every day.

Its modern, well-equipped infrastructure allows easy travel around the city; perfect if you are short on time.

Visit Gardens by The Bay, where futuristic design is used at its most effective to create 101 hectares of horticultural delight. Waterfall cascades, giant cacti and 18 Supertrees create an extensive garden that can only be likened to a movie set.

Marina Bay Sands Hotel has gained worldwide notoriety. Walk along the waterfront here to appreciate the elegant city skyline any time of day. --> Singapur cruises

A trip to Singapore’s Night Safari is a unique and eerie opportunity to come face to face with 120 species of nocturnal wildlife and fragrant jungle foliage.

When is the best time to go on an Asia cruise?

Climate and weather patterns can vary quite significantly, even within the same country in Asia, so it is useful to know what to expect, so you can plan accordingly.

Brief guide of the three main ports in our Asia cruise.

Best time to visit hong kong.

As a subtropical location, the best time to visit Hong Kong is either in the Spring (March -April) or Autumn (October – November). Temperatures are moderate, usually around the mid-20°C, sunshine is common and evenings are cool. July and August can get hot and humid and there is the potential for typhoons, however this does encourage great travel and shopping discounts.

Best time to visit Tokyo

The weather is Tokyo mirrors the UK to a large extend, making Spring (March-May) and autumn (September to November) comfortable times to be out and about, exploring. Travelling in May is beautiful, as the parks and gardens are all in bloom.

Best time to visit Singapore

Being closer to the equator, the temperatures in Singapore remain quite consistent; between 30-33°C. The rainy season is between November and December. However, from June to August, it can get humid, so there is the potential for flash thunderstorms. At any time of year, it’s best to get up early and enjoy the cooler temperatures for sightseeing and also to avoid the crowds.

During peak tourist season, top attractions in the cities can get busy. Book in advance or go early to ensure that you can maximise your time in each location.

Top sights in Asia

Asia’s variety of incredible landscapes, fascinating cultures and ancient historical sites is so extensive that the possibilities for adventure are endless. We’ve picked out our three favourite sights, within close vicinity to our top three harbours.

High Island Reservoir East Dam

The spectacular sight of the largest reservoir in Hong Kong makes High Island Reservoir East Dam well worth a visit. It is situated at the most accessible part of the Hong Kong Global Geopark and features hexagonal volcanic rock columns, formed over 140 million years ago, alongside thousands of dolosse blocks (huge cement barriers shaped like jacks) placed along the coast to break the sea waves; a truly surreal and unique sight.

Sensoji, Asakusa

Sensoji, Asakusa is Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, built in 628. It’s colourful, five-storied pagoda and 200m long, historic shopping street, selling souvenirs and traditional Japanese snacks, attracts many tourists and is host to several large-scale festivals throughout the year.

Raffles Hotel

Enjoy a Singapore Sling in the place where it was created: Raffle Bar in the Raffles Hotel. This hotel has become iconic in Singapore with its colonial history dating back to 1887. Its list of celebrity guests includes Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Jackson and even Queen Elizabeth II. Aside from its magnificent 103 suites and 18 restaurants, it has an arcade of over 40 designer boutiques and stores; heaven for the shopaholic.

For every 10 people alive in the world, 6 of them live in Asia!

Regional Asian dishes

If you love exciting, varied cuisine, bursting with flavour, then Asia will not disappoint. Although Asian food has become increasingly popular in the U.K., tasting the dishes prepared at their origin takes the experience to a whole new level.

Try the unique flavour of Ramen, a Japanese wheat noodle bowl in a Miso broth. Often garnished with egg, pork, seaweed or onion, the dish is strong in flavour, healthy and filling.

Travel to Hong Kong and you must try Dim Sum. Translated as ‘touch the heart’, Dim Sum is not a singular dish, but more a style of food, being a variety of bite-sized dishes. Think Asian style tapas. Hong Kong is famous for its variety of Dim Sum, so here is the place to sample the best.

For a traditional taste of Singaporean cuisine, Bak Kut The, or Pork Ribs Soup, is the dish to order. Simple and humble, this dish consists of a pork broth, spiced with mild herbs, such as star anise and is often thought to be a tonic to reenergise workers.

Fascinating Facts about Asia

Despite Hong Kong’s reputation for high rise skyscrapers, hiking is one of the nation’s favourite pastimes with 40% of its territory is made of country parks and nature reserves.

Hong Kong has the world’s longest covered escalator. Running for 800m, lined with shops and restaurants, the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator was featured as one of the ‘coolest commutes’ by CNN in 2015.

Japan has the greatest density of vending machines in the world, with one on nearly every street corner. These are reported to total around 5.5 million vending machines across the country, which sell everything form hot coffee to umbrellas and fresh eggs!

Cherry blossoms (sakura) are Japan's national flower. Their colourful bloom can be enjoyed at varying times of the year from January to late May, depending where you are in the country.

Singapore is one of only three city states in the world; the others being Monaco and the Vatican City. This is where a singular city and its dependent territories is politically independent and makes up an entire nation.

If you come across a $1,000 note in Singapore, have a look more closely. On the back you will find the full national anthem, written in microtext.

Top Travelling Tip for cruises to Asia

Research local laws and customs when visiting each country in Asia. For example, there are certain places where photography is not welcome, dress should be more conservative or specific gestures may cause offence.

Thailand, Bangkok Marble Temple

From Ancient Temples to Modern Towers

Thailand cruises.

Whether you're seeking paradise islands or contemplative temples, Thailand has it all.

Thailand is unique in Southeast Asia — it's the only country that never capitulated to a foreign power, so its culture and character remain distinctive and intact. You'll see it as you eat your way through varieties of spicy noodles at Bangkok's street food markets, take an hour for quiet contemplation in the temples of Chiang Mai or bask in the vibrant colors of Krabi and Phuket. Cruise to Thailand to explore stunning beaches like Kata Noi and Ya Nui near Phuket, glide down the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok in a traditional Thai boat, or adventure through the country's historic spots and see the Buddhas at the Grand Palace and the Wat Pho Temple.

Thailand, Phuket Island

LEAVE THE LAND BEHIND

No matter where your Thailand cruise calls, a beautiful beach isn't far away. Sun yourself on the beaches of Krabi, or head out on a boating expedition in Bangkok or Phuket. Either way, you'll fall in love with the turquoise waters of Thailand.

Thailand, Boats by Railey Beach

THAI TAXI TRIPS

Long-tail boats are more than just pretty things to photograph, though you'll surely be called to snap a few photos of them. As far as southern Thailand's seafarers are concerned, they're the original taxi. If you're up for a getaway, hop on one of these water taxis for a day trip from Krabi or Phuket to quiet islands like Koh Poda or party spots like Koh Phi Phi.

Thailand, Krabi Beach

BEACh-YA YOU WON'T WANT TO LEAVE

All of Thailand's beaches are amazing, but you're sure to notice some important differences. While the islands of the Andaman Sea (to the west and south of Phuket) feature dramatic cliffs and fluorescent waters, white sand and more muted shades of turquoise define the experience of swimming in the Gulf of Thailand south of Bangkok . No matter where you take a dip, though, you'll be in paradise.

Thailand, Scuba Diving Training

SEAS THE DAY

Thailand's Koh Tao island is one of the world's most affordable and enjoyable places to SCUBA dive or get certified. Don't have time for a course? You can get amazing underwater views when you snorkel, so be sure to bring your underwater camera.

Thailand, Bangkok Grand Palace

INLAND ADVENTURES

Thais are rightfully proud of their heritage, from the long-ruling Chakri dynasty to hundreds of years of Theravada Buddhism. From ancient culture to the pulse of modern Bangkok, you'll find a unique mix of the historic and the contemporary in Thailand with your cruise vacation.

Chicken Pad Thai

SAVOR THE FLAVOR

Thailand's street food scene boasts quick, delicious meals to fuel you as you adventure through the cities. Don't be afraid to dive into local delicacies during your vacation, or pair familiar favorites like Pad Thai noodles and green curry chicken with tangy  Som Tam  papaya salad or crispy  Khaaw Muu Grop  pork belly with rice.

Thailand, Monkey by a Buddhist Pagoda Ruins

MONKEY AROUND IN THAILAND

Thailand offers a ton of opportunities to responsibly get wild. Ethical establishments like the Gibbon Rehabilitation Center in Phuket allow visitors to honor nature as they observe it, and at Khao Yai National Park, a less-than-two-hour drive from Bangkok, you can see elephants roam the land before you raft below thundering waterfalls.

Thailand, Chiang Mai

CITY AND COUNTRY

While Thailand's temples give you a peek into ancient history, its cities offer more modern adventures. Explore award-winning shopping malls like Bangkok's Siam Paragon, or enjoy a panorama from the viewing deck of Baiyoke Sky Tower. To glimpse local culture, visit rice fields outside Chiang Mai or the villages of Phuket.

Thailand, Phang Bay Traditional Long Tail Boat

Start Your Southeast Asian Adventure in Thailand

While Krabi and Phuket have world-class beaches, you can find beautiful views all over Southeast Asia. Continue sailing southward toward Malaysia, where islands like Langkawi and Penang fuse amazing Andaman scenery with a mix of eclectic cultures. Southeast Asia is a wonderland for urban travelers, too. See the skyscrapers of Kuala Lumpur and Hanoi, explore ancient cities like Hong Kong or take advantage of world-class shopping, from Singapore's upmarket Orchard Road to the rough-and-tumble markets of Ho Chi Minh City.

Thailand, Phuket Islands

THE PHUKET PERARL

While Phuket is where many travelers arrive in Thailand, it is also the perfect start to a Southeast Asian journey. Take long-tail boat trips to Koh Phi Phi or Koh Khao Phing Kan (aka "James Bond Island"), or explore the inland part of the island, where you can walk the streets of old-town Phuket or enjoy a panorama from atop the aptly named "Big Buddha."

Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam Ben Duoc Temple

STEP INTO SOUTHEAST ASIA

Thailand is both a cross-section of Southeast Asia and a gateway to the region. Cruise through the Andaman Sea to Malaysia, or sail into the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea to explore destinations like Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines . By adventuring through Southeast Asia, you're sure to see the region come alive.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO The Thai-Land of Paradise

Thailand is as much of a revelation for new Southeast Asia travelers as it is for those who are experienced in the region, and you can tailor your experience to your preferences — whether you're into nature trekking, beachside relaxation or urban exploring. Not impressed by the sprawling markets of Bangkok or the towering limestone cliffs of Krabi? Phuket's Old Town and Chiang Mai's Golden stupas should do the trick.

With their incredible hospitality, the Thai people embody the nation's nickname, the "Land of Smiles." Whether they greet you at your hotel with a friendly wai and bow or deliver you delicious local cuisine, Southeast Asia's most independent people are also its most welcoming.

Family Sailing in Antigua, St. John's, Antigua

5 Reasons Why Cruises Fit Any Family

Basic English is broadly spoken in areas of Thailand where tourists often visit, but learning some basic Thai will earn you many smiles.

Service of alcohol in Thailand is prohibited before 11 a.m. and between 2-5 p.m., so be sure to head to the bar at the right times.

To show respect for local customs, remove your shoes whenever entering a temple or a local person's home.

CUISINE HOW TO SAY "DELICIOUS" IN THAI

Thai can be a difficult language for non-natives, but you should definitely learn the word  aroi , which means "delicious." It'll be the perfect way to describe the indulgent cuisine of the area, full of bright spices, pungent fish sauce and tangy vinegar.

Pad Thai Traditional Noodles

WOK ThIS WAY

Whether you eat it with shrimp, pork or chicken, few Thai dishes are more satisfying than stir-fried noodles, also known as pad thai. Stop by one of the food stalls on Charoen Krung Road or another of Bangkok's popular street food spots, where pad thai is traditionally cooked up with tangy-sweet paste of tamarind, a tropical fruit.

Thai Green Curry with Chicken

Spicy, creamy green curry is even more delicious in Thailand than it is at home. The creamy coconut milk base of this comforting Thai classic is made with fragrant green chilies, lemongrass, ginger and garlic. Make sure to order rice, since the dish is served a la carte here.

Green Papaya Salad

PAPAYA PRIDE

There's no better way to get a taste of Thailand's northeast Isaan cuisine than som tam, a salad made with shredded green papaya, fresh tomatoes, dried shrimp, a squeeze of lime juice and as much or as little chili as you like.
