USEFUL INFORMATION

Health and Vaccinations  

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Azerbaijan though you should be up to date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. Please note we are not medical professionals and so we highly recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.   

Currency  

In Azerbaijan the official unit of currency is the Azerbaijan Manat (AZN).

Cultural Sensitivity   

On our tours we frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your guides will be able to advise you accordingly.   

In the churches and cathedrals women should cover their heads with a scarf or hat, while men should take their hats off.  

Language & Religion  

The official language of Azerbaijan is Azerbaijani belonging to the Turkic language family.  Azerbaijani is closely related to Turkish, Qashqai and Turkmen. 99% of Azerbaijan’s population are Muslims belonging to the Shia sect which is the 2nd highest Shia population outside of Iran.

Azerbaijan is 5hrs ahead of GMT.

Food and drink  

Azerbaijani food is characterised by its use of fresh and healthy ingredients. Meals often begin with salads: tomatoes, small cucumbers, white cheese and a variety of delicious herbs.  Caviar from the Caspian Sea washed down with a glass of iced Vodka is a speciality, cheap (compared to the West) and widely available. These may be followed by a hearty soup, for instance dyshbara (dumplings in broth), piti (lamb and peas) or dovga with meatballs, herbs and sour cream.  Popular main courses are shashlyks or kebabs cooked over a charcoal fire and fish, particularly sturgeon fresh from the Caspian Sea. It is also delicious grilled in the same way over charcoal and served with a pomegranate sauce – Narsharab .

Shamakhi is in the east-central Azerbaijan. It is located 76 miles (122 km) west of Baku and is one of the oldest cities in the republic, dating from the 6th century AD, but the modern city was not incorporated until 1824. From the 9th to the 16th century, it was the residence of the Shirvan shahs. There are numerous historical buildings, including a mosque and a mausoleum, which have been damaged by the frequent earthquakes. Şamaxı is now a centre of food industries and is especially noted for wines. A brocaded, flat-stitch carpet with mosaic-tile patterns is produced in the surrounding area

Shaki (Sheki), a small town in the lower slopes of Greater Caucasus. The main attractions in Shaki, alongside the surrounding forested mountains and snow-topped peaks of Caucasus, are related to the colorful history of the city. The first settlements in the area date back to the Bronze Age, but the present day city was established in 18th century, after floods destroyed the original Shaki. The town, and royal capital was moved to Nukha Fortress, built by Khan Haji Chalabi in year 1772. In early 19th century Shaki flourished as a trade town between caravan routes, and as a silk-weaving town. The walled fortress is well-preserved, and on a stroll in the old town, tourists can visit beautifully restored royal palaces and historical caravanserais.

Located in the north-east of Azerbaijan, Guba is a great place to experience the Caucasus Mountains. Timeless mountain villages are populated by diverse peoples and offer great hiking and ecotourism opportunities. In the city itself you can discover some intriguing culinary secrets while in the surrounding villages local women weave some of the finest carpets in the Caucasus.

Shahdag – is exactly that special place, where you should go, if you wish to travel to winter fairytale. Those snow-white fields, bright sun, and mountain weather – best remedy from the tiredness from noisy cities. Being the first ski resort in Azerbaijan, Shahdag very soon became the favorite place of many local citizens, where they can celebrate the New Year or just spend joyful weekends.

Ganja, the second-largest city in Azerbaijan with a name that is hard to forget, is a city full of beautiful red brick architectures, a plethora of things to do and see, and a great base to go explore the beautiful lakes of Goygol and Maralgol. Ganja has a plethora of beautiful ancient architectures all around the city and one of the most prominent ones is the Shah Abbas Mosque or as some call it Juma Mosque (Friday Mosque). Ganja is a homeland of the famous poet Nizami Ganjavi, poetess Mahsati Ganjavi, poet and “sage of Ganja” Mirza Shafi Vazeh. The Mausoleum of Nizami Ganjavi is located right at the entry of the city. The tomb of Nizami has been a place of devoted pilgrimage for many centuries.

Wedged between the Caspian Sea and the lush Talysh Mountains, Lankaran is a region of unique natural diversity. The city itself is an old port that used to be surrounded by fortifications, and it’s ideally placed between some of Azerbaijan’s best nature reserves. The region is also famed for its citrus fruits and flavoursome cuisine, as well as being the centre of Azerbaijani tea growing.

April through to June is the best time to visit Azerbaijan, when the temperatures are warm, the flowers are out, and skies at their clearest. September and October are also good temperature-wise, though the countryside isn’t as scenic. The heat and humidity can be oppressive in Baku during the summer months of June, July and August, and from November to March temperatures can fall below zero.

Geography and environment

Azerbaijan is a mountainous country on the western coast of the Caspian Sea. Over half of the country’s landscape consists of ridges, crests and foothills, while the remainder is characterised by lowland plateaus and plains traversed by rivers.

1. the walled city of old baku.

Constructed sometime in the 12th century, this walled fortress was granted UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2000. A bustling labyrinth of alleyways, old buildings and boutique hotels, where the locals still live and go about their day, it retains the quintessential elements of a medieval town. It’s one of the few World Heritage sights in which you can actually bed down for a night.

2. Shirvanshah’s Palace

This ornate sandstone palatial complex received World Heritage status at the same time as the Walled City (in which it’s located). Largely destroyed by a bombardment, courtesy of the Russian Navy in the 18th century, the Palace has since been meticulously restored and is clearly visible from the sea and the city’s surrounding heights.

3. Maiden's Tower

Another World Heritage-listed sight inside the Walled City, Qiz Qalasi – translated as the Maiden’s or Virgin’s Tower – is one of Azerbaijan’s foremost architectural accomplishments and recognisable emblems. Standing 29 metres high and cylindrical in design, the history of this spiralling and mystifying structure remains a point of debate between historians, while its top offers 360-degree views of surrounding Baku Bay and the town’s alleys and minarets.

4. Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape

The ancient carvings and petroglyphs of the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, less than 70 km from Baku, provide a rich and fascinating insight into how life was for people in the area over 40,000 years ago. More than 6,000 depictions of flora, fauna and people engaged in hunting and fishing activities reveal both cultural continuity between prehistoric and medieval times, and seismic geographical change. The site received UNESCO listing in 2007.

5. The Khan’s Palace

Currently on the tentative list of sights seeking World Heritage listing, the former summer residential palace of Shaki Khans is an ornately tiled and patterned two-story structure built in 1797. Renowned for its exquisite stained-glass windows, murals and frescos, the palace’s beauty is only enhanced by verdant natural surroundings.

AZERBAIJAN VISA:

All travellers to Azerbaijan require a visa. It is not possible to get a visa on arrival at Baku Airport or at any land border into Azerbaijan. All travellers must apply for a Single Entry Tourist E-Visa to Azerbaijan in advance.

We have partnered with The Visa Machine to provide your e-visa for Azerbaijan. This service is included in your trip cost. We advise that you apply for your e-visa no later than 3 months before your trip to allow time for processing. Azerbaijan e-visas are processed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Azerbaijan and usually take around 4 weeks to be processed, with up to 6 weeks in peak travel season not uncommon.

2. Use the Checklist to make sure you have everything you need before you start as you will not be able to save once your start filling in the application.

Is tipping customary in Azerbaijan?

In established restaurants, bars, hotels and taxis, a 5-10% service charge is usually added to the bill - though feel free to tip more than this for exceptional service. At restaurants where a service charge isn’t included, 10% is the acceptable gratuity. Although tipping at other places isn't mandatory it will be well received, and setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is also a good idea.

What is the internet access like in Azerbaijan?

Internet cafes with reliable and fast connections can easily be found in all of Azerbaijan’s major cities and towns.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone while in Azerbaijan?

Mobile coverage is extensive throughout the capital and major cities, but pretty much non-existent in the remote mountainous parts of the country. Roaming agreements are in place with most international cellular companies.

What are the toilets like in Azerbaijan?

Clean and flushable Western-style toilets are generally the go at established tourist attractions across the country, though one should be prepared for some pretty ordinary squat/pit toilets elsewhere. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as these aren’t always at hand.

Can I drink the water in Azerbaijan?

Tap water isn't safe to drink in Azerbaijan. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, bring water purification tablets or ask your leader where filtered water can be found.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Azerbaijan?

Some major credit cards will be accepted at some high-end restaurants and hotels, but it's best not to rely on these.

What is ATM access like in Azerbaijan?

ATMs are prevalent in Baku and other major towns, though won’t necessarily be internationally connected or reliable. Be sure to have other payment methods when visiting the country.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?
