Muddumalai and Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary – Night Safari

Since we have visited Bandipur National Park, Karnataka, my daughter has named everyone on the animals, e.g. Myself “Dinasour”, my daughter Navya “Baby Dianasour”, Son Ujjwal “Chhota Deer”, Niece “Elephent”, Wife Dimpi “Monnkey”,.my elder brother Tiger, My sister in law Peacock, friend Sanjeev Camel. And on top of that, she calls us by these name, watching it on TV a tiger chasing deer, she says, “Tau ji is chasing Bhayya”, I want to take a ride on Sanjeev chacha (Camel).

Well, we 5, me, my wife, my niece, my son and daughter, drove to Masanagudi, Tamilnadu, it is 290 KM from Bangalore, we took Bangalore-Mysore highway, and then towards Ooty/Bandipur. From Gundelpet, there are 2 roads to Ooty, 1 via Bandipur and another one is a Ooty/Coimboter highway. I realised this while coming back, otherwise I was wondering if this is the main route to Ooty. For about 60 KMs, road is not good, there is hardly any road on few patches. We reached Bandipur in the afternoon, had lunch and crossing Bandipur Jungle we moved towards to Masangudi.

Drive is pleasent through the jungle, we saw few deers, langoors, and a traffice jam. Why traffic jam, are bhai, elephent baby and his mother were standing on the the main road, and no body dared to honk to push them aside the road. Watching so many people staring at them, mother elephent secured the child elephent and pushed him on the other side of the road, wow, we are in Muddumalai national park, Tamilnadu. My camera was back in the trunk and I was not able to capture that. We reached Muddumalai city in 30 minutes and inquired about our GlenView Resorts (www.glenviewresorts.com). It was further 15 KM on Ooty road. When we reached near resort, there was no road, I called the resort manager and asked for the directions, he said just follow the road, I said there is no road man, he said, this is the only no-road to reach us. Driving slowly, we found ourselv in a jungle, foothills of Blue-Hills in Nilgiris. There were few other resorts on the way and our resort was the last one. We reached there around 4:00 PM, met resort manager Suresh. Resort was pretty nice, inside the jungle, he allocated us a room on a tree, which was quite big for 3 adults and 2 kids.

After having a tea, Suresh briefed us about the activities, Elephent camp, Muddumalai National Park Night/Day safari, camp fire, trekking etc. We got excited about the Night safari, my kids were excited for the Elephent camp. We decided to go for Elephent camp first, which is just outside the Muddumalai National park. There were about 9-10 elephents, getting ready for their food.

Elephant having his dinner

Elephant having his dinner

One baby elephant was very friendly, you pay some money to the caretaker, he allows you to touch the elephant trunk, baby elephant was so friendly that he put his trunk around my neck. Elephant camp has a small museum, having elephant and other animal story. A “lesson” from Elephant camp. If elephant is angry, he raise three alarms, 1st Alarm, “Guys, get ready to run”, 2nd Alarm, “Start running now”, 3rd alarm, “Sorry guys, you are in big trouble now”, elephant is very friendly, but when he got angry, he is the most dangerous animal, so, don’t even give any chance for the first alarm itself.

After the elephant camp visit, Suresh asked us whether to go for a night safari or not, we all were ready to go and that too inside the deep jungle. While driving on the main road, we saw few samabar deers, baison. And then the fun begins now, Suresh warned us that it is illegal to go inside the deep jungle in the night, and we would not be able to see any animal, no body should make any noise. With some feer, we asked him to move on, it was 9:00 PM and our jeep was the only vehicle in the jungle, driver had a torch to locate any animal, we drove around half an hour, very dark, scary, reminding movie Kaal. Luckily, we spotted a rabbit, kids were very delighted, tried to make some noise, but Suresh asked them to keep quiet.

Suddenly, driver stopped the engine, shut off the head lights. I wondered if something happened to the jeep, and then Suresh, whispered, “Sir, feel the nature now”. I glanced to the surroundings, wife and kids face, and whispered, “Bhai, lets go back now, before nature start feeling us”. Suresh asked if we want to go further down, I said, it’s enough, let’s go back. We drove back, came out of the jungle, everyone was looking a little tired and sigh of relief. On the way back, we saw Poccupine and couple of biasons. We finally reached to the resort around 10:30, had dinner and though of going for trekking next morning. Next day was a late morning, so missed the treeing on Blu-Hills and went to Ooty-Connoor (will write separate sty about it).

Third day, we started very early in the morning to reach Bandipur National Park so that we can take another jeep safari. We reached Bandipur, Karnataka about 7:00 AM, we saw a group of elephants while crossing the Tamilnadu/Karnataka border, this time I was having my camera inside driver’s cabin. I went to the ticket counter and asked about the Jeep safari ticket, clerk said that Jeep safari should be booked in couple of days advance, and we were left with the van safari option. I was very upset, but then purchased the tickets for Van safari. While parking my car, one monkey came inside the car through window, and took my daughter’s sipper cup, smart monkey :)

Bandipur jungle was all dry, we were hopping to see some bear, elephent and the big cat. But, we saw lots of lots of deers, peacock and what, nothing. It was very disappointing. Bandipur National Park is a Project Tiger, but you hardly see any Tiger there. We drove back to Bangalore, on the way, I took my niece to Mysore palace, kids took the camel ride and reached home in the evening.

Glenview resorts in Masangudi is a nice place to stay, a little higher on price, no TV, no phone, but have comfort of AC, geyser, nice food, on demand drinks. Airtel doesn’t work here, Vodafone works fine. Suresh, the property manager is very friendly, he can accompany you for jungle safari as well as for trekking. All the time we had mixed North Indian and south Indian food, Tamilnadu sambhar and rasam is much much tastier then Karnataka sambhar / rasam.

Muddumalai National Park is in Tamilnadu, where you can watch elephant, bear, wild pig, deer, biason. But it has left with very few animals due to the shortage of water and most of the animals has moved to nearby Bandipur National Park. You can see lots of policmen patrolling the park, and no traffic is allowed to Ooty after 8:00 PM.

Bandipur National Park is in Karnataka, and host Tigers, elephants, deer, langoors, sambar deer. Jungle Resorts is the place to stay, but expensive for a big family / group. You can book the government jungle lodges/bungalow, but you have to book that in very advance. You have to send a letter to Forest officer and he will confirm you if it is booked. It’s cheap, you can enjoy morning tea with deers/peacock, and a very rich Karnataka food on request. There are several other private resorts here as this is one of the popular weekend gateway for Bangalore people, and it’s a good idea to book your stay in advance during summer vacations.

may be its on top of food-chain (almost) and is one of the powerful animals.

I could not help myself from laughing aloud on reading “…lets go before nature starts feeling us…”. lol.

Pics sizes are good this time :), guess the feedback worked. Keep writing.

The majesty attained by combining strength and beauty also played a part. Its roar reverberates through the jungle commanding submission from all other species.

Your humorous approach is entertaining.

“Why Lion is called as the King of Jungle, why not other cats?” Well, I guess it has the loudest roar among all the cats?

Nice, Fun description. We passed Muddumalai on our way from Bangalore to Coorg 3 years ago, and did see elephants and deer shoals just by the road, and by the riverside. The sanctuary is quite beautiful in itself, even if one doesn’t come across the big cats!

' src=

Maybe cos the lion has a big beard. Bearded men look formidable. Anyhow great peice. Reminds me of what we missed at corbett. I think the greatest place to stay in a forest is inside it. next time surely. great photos too The other patrick

So many reasons, wow. Mine is pretty well known: Lion is the only cat who eats fresh food, first chase the food, kill and then eat”.

By the way there are places in Bandipur where people have spotted tigers…:) and in Masinagudi as well, where elephants come almost to your doorstep

You state most of the animals from Madumalai NP have moved to nearby Bandipur NP. During my journey from Mysore to Ooty I recall these two NPs were contiguous, i.e., connected throughout in an unbroken landscape except for the narrow tar road that apparently divides the region into the above two NPs. So I wonder if the movement of animals crossing that road was actually monitored.

A nice post with lovely pictures, and I especially liked the pictures of the baby monkey clinging on to its parent.

Nice pics. I can think of the camera that you are using for catching such great closeups.

Hornbill Festival –The Liveliest Festival of India, Day Two

There we saw nothing like individual performances and all the tribes were dancing in a group. In every performance group of artists in colourful costumes began dancing slowly, made circles or some geometrical formations, gradually raised the tempo with steps and on reaching the climax, tempo was brought down again with a satisfying finale.

The tribes of Mizoram entered into the arena with their most popular Bamboo Dance. In that format of dance bamboos were placed and held horizontally across each other on the ground. While the boys tapped bamboos in rhythmic beats girls were dancing by stepping alternatively in and out to the beats with ease and grace.

bandipur night safari

Once the private hunting grounds of the maharaja, Bandipur is unapologetically wild terrain. Elephants roam in large herds, deer stare at you brazenly and peafowl flit in and out as they deem fit. Nestled at the foothills of the Nilgiris, Bandipur has had a long tryst with tigers. One of the thirty reserves identified across the country to save the tiger and its habitat, it’s also one of the last refuges of the endangered Asiatic wild elephant. The Bandipur Safari Lodge is your way of being a part of this ecological haven.

We all have a role to play in maintaining the ecological balance. Nothing makes you more aware of how much we take for granted than a visit to the wild. Be prepared to leave an environmental activist, as the wildlife experience is known to touch the deepest recesses of your mind.

The sheer majesty of elephants so aware of their power, the enormity of the forest and its ancient secrets, the unblinking gaur that dares you to try stare him down, and if you’re lucky, a glimpse of a tiger or leopard, arrogance clearly written on their feline features: is a resounding lesson in learning to respect nature. Our guests are taken every evening to the jungle with a trained naturalist for company.

Bird-lovers will not suffer for company. With over two hundred species of birds including peafowl, hornbills, woodpeckers, the Crested Hawk Eagle, wagtails, blue jays, partridges, etc. one can spend hours trying to spot as many of these brightly hued winged creatures as possible.

The premises are filled with herbs, medicinal and ornamental plants. The garden, by itself, inspires the naturalist in you. If ever your curiosity gets ahead of your knowledge, our naturalists are at hand: they’ll clear any doubts you might have. End the day on a peaceful note, with the cicadas taking over the night shift from the birds: the perfect accompaniment to your campfire barbecue dinner.

Though Bandipur is around-the-year tourist destination, summers are the best time for wildlife sightings. March to May being the dry season, the animals come out of hiding and can be spotted by the watering holes. But for bird-watchers, the winter months are a better bet, for November to January, many migratory birds from the North, especially the Himalayas come down south to roost.

Bandipur: a surprise at every turn.

The jeep ground to a halt and the engine was killed, abruptly leaving us with the lush silence of the forest. An unseen flame-back called. And then we heard it – a branch broken, intermittent noises coming progressively closer, the thud of logs or stones being dislodged, and the crack of six-inch boles being snapped effortlessly.

The Monsoon and a Hundred Stories

ಚಂದ್ರ ಹಾಗೂ ಒಂದು ನೂರು ಕತೆಗಳು

“Can you hear that, madam?” Basavanna, our naturalist, turned around in his front seat and whispered. I strained my ears, not unlike the spotted deer we had seen some time back. The jungle seemed still, the cicadas having ceased their incessant song for the moment. I wondered what I should be hearing – a warning call, or perhaps some animal making its way

Beyond the Big Cats

bandipur night safari

There is a sense of excitement when one sets off on a safari: the nip in the air and the fragrance of a fresh forest waking up to the warm rays of the sun, all tingle the senses. What hidden treasures will the jungle reveal this time? This being our first visit to Bandipur National Park, the anticipation was even more! The jungle is an immersing experience of sights, sounds and smells; there is so much more to a forest than the big cats.

Bandipur National Park

Bandipur National Park, established in 1974 as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, is a national park located in the Indian state of Karnataka, which is the state with the second-highest tiger population in India. These forests are contiguous with Nagarhole, Wayanad, and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, hence providing safe haven for a number of species – notably the Indian Elephant and Royal Bengal Tiger.

Once a private Hunting Reserve for the Maharajas of Mysore, this landscape is now part of the Nilgiri Biosphere reserve – one of India’s conservation success stories.

Bandipur has a variety of biomes including dry deciduous forests, moist deciduous forests, and shrublands. The wide range of habitats helps support a diverse range of organisms. The park is flanked by the Kabini River in the north and the Moyar River in the south..

About Bandipur national Park

The open-ness of the Bandipur park provides for huge Elephant herds and one of the last strongholds of the Indian Wild Dogs – the extremely intelligent pack hunters of the Indian Forest. The Kabini River separates Bandipur from Nagarhole, yet the denizens are able to traverse freely between the 2 parks when the water levels recede.

The elusive Black (melanistic) Leopard has been spotted in Bandipur national park on more than one occasion, and it is believed that there are multiple individuals living inside the park. Therefore, it is safe to say that a tiger safari in India is incomplete without experiencing all that Bandipur National Park has to offer.

Bandipur Safari Lodge is an eco-friendly establishment, owned by the Government of Karnataka. It is an ideal place to stay if you are planning to visit and explore Bandipur National Park, located on the outskirts of which the property is located. The lodge with its 12 cottages and 10 special cottages provides accommodation to travellers. These cottages have attached bathrooms with basic amenities, but are bereft of televisions and air-conditioners. A natural cool breeze blows past the region more than compensating for the unavailability of artificial air conditioning. Some cottages have pure white walls and ceilings, and the walls behind the twin beds are decorated with large 3D paintings of animals in their natural surroundings. Such unique interiors will give you the feeling of being on a wildlife safari at Bandipur, even though you will be in your rooms. The other cottages have brick walls, tiled floors and slanting wooden ceilings. Additionally, all cottages have comfortable chairs, set in front of large windows of clear glass to look at the scenery all around the lodge. You could even sit out on the balconies of all rooms to bask in the sun and enjoy the calming cool breeze. All cottages are built on gently sloping hills and they are kept apart from each other, so you get complete privacy while staying here. As is the case with all properties, owned by Jungle Lodges and Resorts, the large circular gazebo here is named Gol Ghar. This is where you will dine along with other guests of Bandipur Safari Lodge while beholding the Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta Peak. You may also relish your meals at the proper multi-cuisine restaurant within the premises of the lodge. The food served here includes South Indian delicacies and also popular Chinese and Thai preparations for diners with varied tastes. Evenings here are a time for fun and frolic, and you could sing, dance or share stories around a bright and warm bonfire. You will find a good selection of liquors and other alcoholic beverages at the exclusive full-fledged bar of the establishment. Another mode of entertainment here is a comfortable lounge, where videos about wildlife and also books on the same topic can be found. A trip to the lodge and the region is perhaps incomplete without embarking on a wildlife safari Bandipur. You could take such expeditions on a Jeep or foot, combining the joys of wildlife spotting and trekking through thick jungles. To be really close to nature, you may opt for elephant rides through the national park.

Duration:  1 Night / 2 Days Location:  Bandipur National Park, Karnataka Best Time to go:  October to June

Distance: The city of Mysore, which is an important tourist destination in itself, is about 77 km from the national park. Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, and the city with among the best road, rail and air connectivity to the rest of India is located around 218 km from here. Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru can be easily reached from Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, London, Frankfurt, Paris, Middle East, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Colombo and Singapore. Trains to the city can be taken from all significant places within India. You may also come by trains and flights first to Coimbatore, which is approximately 133 km from the wildlife reserve. The famous hill station of Ooty in Tamil Nadu is just about 50 km from this protected area. Activities: A wildlife safari Bandipur, nature walks and birdwatching tours can all be enjoyed in the region with learned naturalists. The national park has 28 species of mammals, 250 of birds, 115 of butterflies, 23 of reptiles, 16 of fish, 13 of amphibians and 50 of plants and trees. Situated at the junction of the Deccan Plateau and Western Ghats, and located between altitudes of 2230 feet and 4770 feet, it comprises dry and moist deciduous forests and shrubs. Season: Though the region can be visited any time of the year, animals are best sighted in the summer season. As the weather from March to May is dry and warm, most of the animals here are drawn to the water bodies to quench their thirst and to cool down. The time between the months of November and January is perfect for birdwatchers to throng the area as during this time, hordes of birds migrate here from the Himalayas. Trekkers will find the months, following the rainy season, as being ideal for them.

Wonderful stay close to nature

Madhur Bothra

We travel-led with our kid and stayed at Bandipur safari lodge for a day (1 night. We didn't expect much as it was just a one-night halt and most of the time would go in safari but we were pleasantly surprised by the way all arrangements were made. An extra bed, blanket, towel for a kid, all was kept ready in our cottage when we checked in. The staff functions very meticulously and in a dedicated manner. Everything is well organized and timely. Food is homely, tasty, healthy and spread is decent too. Two safaris (one in the morning and one in the evening) are included in the package. Rooms are basic but neat n clean. There were two lovely sit-outs one in the front door and the other at the backdoor. We were stationed at the elephant cottage. Overall from stay to safari to food, everything was a pleasant experience. Would like to appreciate the dedication and courtesy of the staff. They always served us with a smile ) would suggest if you travel with kids or elders then take rooms near gol ghar which is their dinning area.

Best jlr ever!

Ritwika Dey

I stayed in bandipur jlr for one night with my childhood female friend and the first thing that i can vouch for this stay is it’s safety! we were two female travellers, so the amount of concern and hospitality we received was unparalleled! the staff made sure we felt comfortable and the food was delicious with quite a number of options including both veg and non-veg. Our safaris were excellent and in the first safari we spotted multiple animals like the indian gaur, sambar, elephant, deer's and many different types of birds. In the next safari, we finally spotted the leopard which sealed the deal for us. Our package included breakfast, lunch, tea and snacks and dinner along with two safaris and we must say that we felt it’s a home away from home. We look forward to coming back once again to spend some more nights in this amazing property!

Good experience

Sahajananda Reddy

Overall the experience is good. We went there while coming back from our Ooty trip to Bangalore. It is right on the road so reachability is not a problem at all. The Rooms are clean and gives a good feel to stay with a lot of trees and nature around. Food is great and has a homely touch and the staff is extremely courteous. The KA government is doing a fantastic job on jungle lodges. The Jungle Safari is also good. We have spotted deer, wild elephants, Mongoose, Bison and leopard on our evening safari. Morning Safari was breath taking with Panoramic views of the Nilgiri biosphere. We could not spot Tiger but other teams could see them. Its all luck! The only downside is its overcharged. But overall I recommend going there for one day stay.

Amazing safari and service

This was our first stay with jungle lodges and I was looking forward to it for a long time. The heavy rains put a (literal) damper on the Safari and bonfire, but the overall experience was still very positive. Great food and service. And the safari access is the best I have ever seen. On the downside, the rooms need to be updated, for the asking price. Also on the Safari, we had some really poorly behaved parents and children. Please give an option for people who don't want to be stuck with children to move to a separate Jeep. I really haven't come to the forests to listen to someone's poorly mannered brat.

Warm hospitality

Neelabh Gupta

We really enjoyed our stay at the resort. Rooms were spacious with a private seating space amidst nature and a hammock. Though the linens and the towels in the rooms need a revamp. They have air coolers in the room but AC would be better in the summer. Food was homely and really delicious. Above all it was the hospitality of the Bandipur Safari Lodge by Jungle Lodges staff which made our stay great. Good service at the buffet and even offered to prepare which is for our kid. We got two jeff Safari trips which started right from the comfort of our Bandipur Safari Lodge by Jungle Lodges.

All inclusive, well managed and all facilities including safari arranged by the property.

Vignesh Ram

The place is perfect. The location, the staff (well trained, kind and ever helpful, the safari arrangents are fantastic. The rooms are fabulous ( cottages are very spacious with a lot of space and a great sit out and a veranda. The food is all inclusive and is really very good. The food is simple and tasty. We went there for our anniversary. We had a fantastic set up for dinner by our room amazingly arranged and the cake was on the house. Overall a great experince and really kind people.

purva dhadphale

The place is peace and serene. Sounds of birds wake u up in the morning. Cottages are decent. With few lizards. But that's a given because of location. Food is delicious for vegetarian. Can't comment for non. Veg. Staff is super helpful and very polite. Very nice stay we n joyed a lot. A plus is that rooms don't have tv. This let's kids enjoy the nature more than external entertainment. Not a very lavish interior. But the cost includes stay, food, safari. Overall loved the place.

Excellent stay, safaris and service

Shruti Parija

First stay at a jlr property and it was the absolute best. The rooms are spacious and tastefully designed with a beautiful sitout, and the property has a lot of greenery with benches and walking paths. The safaris were nicely done with good and knowledgeable drivers. The food was delicious and all meals were served on a timely basis. The service was excellent and the staff is very helpful.

Value for money

Nitesh Kumar

Location is good, it's on main highway and overall safety standards is also good.

Best way to the forest

Niyati Nagda

Bandipur safari lodge is about 5 to 10mins from the safari booking window. The best part is the no hassle experience as safari, meals and stay all is included in the price you pay. They genuinely stick to the itinerary and meals are awesome. They were kind enough to accommodate and prepare special delicious jain meals for a few of us. Best choice

Wildlife at mudumalai and bandipur.

Trip members: Karthik and vacation friends

Trip date: 28 Mar 2024 - 31 Mar 2024

Trip Plan : Chennai - Mysuru - Masinagudi - Mudumalai - Bandipur - Nanjangud - Mysuru - Chennai

The main agenda for the trip was wildlife sighting. We planned this trip around 3 months earlier so as to get safari tickets of gypsy or canter for Masinagudi and Bandipur. We booked tickets through online.

We planned 2 safaris across 2 days. For sure, it is not possible to do a safari on the day we reach Mysuru in the morning. Accordingly, planned for Mudumalai Gypsy safari for evening as it was scorching summer. Bandipur safari was planned for second half of next day. Normally, the probability of morning sightings is comparatively less in summers, so, we planned only for evening safaris.

We reached Mysuru around 7 AM by Kaveri express. The cab was pre-booked for 3 days through Savaari.com as usual. Enroute to Masinagudi, we stopped at outskirts of Mysuru for breakfast at Ruchi Mane. The breakfast was definitely very good - kara bath, mysuru masala dosa and vadais. It would roughly take 3 hours at leisure to reach Masinagudi from Mysuru.

Bandipur - Masinagudi road

We let our driver know our safari plans and the only objective was to see wildlife. So, as we entered Bandipur forest area, the driver drove slowly and attentively to sight animals. As we entered the Bandipur reserve to reach Masinagudi, we started seeing lots of deers - this was a promising signal as wildlife is well accessible on roads; possibly good safaris can be expected!

bandipur night safari

The forests were super dry and brown - effect of super hot summer.

Leopard Sighting

One of us sighted a leopard by the road side! A very good spotting for sure from a moving car amidst the camouflaged nature. Wow ! Paisa vasool right away! The young adult leopard was super shy, and gave us a sighting of hardly 30-45 seconds, before vanishing into the camouflaged brown bushes! PERFECT ! Nothing more to ask for the trip!

bandipur night safari

We continued to sight more spotted deer, peahen, peacocks, langurs. On entering Mudumalai, took diversion towards Masinagudi from the Gudalur road and check-in in to our resort at Masinagudi.

bandipur night safari

Check-in at Masinagudi

We reached the resort, and were pretty early for check-in. We spent some time resting in the reception and a waiting area before we got our cozy, super comfortable rooms at Avadale resort. This resort is around a km off the road and one of the resorts at the end point of the so called roads, facing the forest. Potentially, good chances of animal sighting early in the morning if lucky!

We ordered lunch as well in the resort as it was hot outside and no decent restaurants in the village of Masinagudi. We were served lunch in the common area - salad, roti, dal, bhajjis, paneer gravy, rice, payasam, butter milk, papad and payasam. The food was good and sufficient.

bandipur night safari

After some rest in the noon (as the train sleep was disturbed by few touring school chaps and their unforgettable guides being active all through night), we got some powernap in the room. We had booked for a safari for 5 PM and got ready to reach there by 4 PM. We spent time at the eco shop, snack counter for some time before starting the safari by Gypsy.

If you have booked your safari tickets online, it is quite easy. Just walk to the counter 15-20 mins before the safari, share the printed voucher for your safari. The forest warden would validate the same, check names in ID cards and issue your gypsy number. Walk and board it! So simple!

The booking website and charges can vary time to time. We paid Rs.1200 per person for the gypsy. The gypsy is only for a group and upto 6 people can go.

View of Ooty hills from Mudumalai!

bandipur night safari

Sightings at Mudumalai Safari

After around 3-4 kms of ride on the main road, we entered the forest safari zone. We first sighted Malabar giant squirrel, then lagurs. Then, the popular Mudumalai elephants! We started seeing herds of elephants - that was again a second WOW for the day, after sighting leopard in the morning.

bandipur night safari

The gypsy driver was very cooperative to stop at the right spots to show us various wildlife and take photos.

As the sun set, the colours of forest became even more pleasing and relaxing. We stopped at various water sources in a wish to see some wild cats, but no luck for some time. Little later, we jumped in to a herd of Indian gaur and a sambhar deer.

As we were almost winding up, we sighted another herd of elephants! Take a bow for the day! Elephants of different ages cuddling together! More langurs, peacocks, big wild boar followed as the safari winded up on a scenic evening!

bandipur night safari

We ended the day after an exhilarating day at Mudumalai with a buffet dinner at the resort. We also walked around the resort and relaxed; before calling it a day!

Day-2 started with the sunrise view. Search for animals on a summer morning was a disappointment, but for sighting a sprinting wild boar at some distance.

bandipur night safari

The plan was to visit the Theppakadu elephant camp by 8 AM. Tourists have to buy the entry ticket from the safari ticket counter; if the safari is same day, the same ticket can also be used for entry here.

Theppakadu elephant camp

Theppakadu elephant camp is a major tourist attraction in Mudumalai after the safari. This is where Elephants are taken care and tourists are allowed to visit the elephant feeding activity. The feeding of the camp Elephants is open twice a day - Morning and Evening. The timings for the feeding are morning 8:30 to 9:00 and evening 5:30 to 6:00. This is walkable from the safari ticket counter - 200m; or reachable by car through a de-tour of 1 km.

bandipur night safari

We can see around 20+ Elephants of different ages being fed.

After visiting the elephant camp, we went back the resort, had breakfast, yummy vadais and uthappams. Checked out and started towards Bandipur. We had booked our resort at Bandipur - Bandipur Heritage Village resort around 15 kms from the Bandipur safari point.

We checked in our hotel by mid-day around 1 PM and had lunch at Hotel Kamat at the same place. We preferred to eat light as it was super hot and we had to go to a safari. We had dosais, curd vadai and butter milk for lunch.

Bandipur Safari

Our safari booking was on a canter through a private operator for 3 hours of safari started from 3:30 to 6:30 PM. We reached a pre-informed place for the canter safari; they transported us to the safari starting point; and were transferred to canters.

If you book a gypsy, it is a 60 min drive and you get to board from the safari starting point. We preferred to have a lengthier safari and book from a private operator to club with JLR canters. This is a 3 hour safari!

bandipur night safari

As usual, sighting started with few deers and peacocks, before knowing that a tiger is on the prowl around. Our canter driver took us to the tiger spot immediately, crowded by many gypsies and canters. The tiger had seen the crowd and was too shy to show off. We moved around and around and around for almost 45 minutes to see the tiger, ended by seeing it in a flash - the back and the tail - but nothing more!

Our canter driver patiently for some more time, but the tiger was in a different mood. We did spot the pug marks!

bandipur night safari

Sighted few birds and then more elephants, spotted deer, sambhar deer and langurs!

bandipur night safari

We reached back the resort, had light dinner as was available and ended our very tiring day in the hot sun.

Relaxed start for the day, enjoyed the elaborate breakfast spread at the hotel and checked out around 9:30 AM.

Nanjangud

We visited the Nanjangud Shiva temple - Srikanteshwara Temple or Sri Nanjundeswara Temple. The tall gopuram gives you the first wow effect of the temple. Being a Sunday, the temple was crowded and we preferred the Rs.100 queue. We had dharshan in 15 mins time on the paid queue; where as free dharshan was more than a hour of waiting time.

The temple is ancient, with beautiful sculptures, a big Nandhi, lots of inscriptions all around and all possible God, Goddess sanctums.

bandipur night safari

We spent around 45 mins in the temple before starting back to Mysuru.

Reaching Mysuru, stopped at usual points like Mahalakshmi sweets and boarded the train back to Chennai - Vandebharat express. We reached Chennai in less than 6 hours!

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
