Bandyup Women's Prison is the only female prison in Western Australia that caters for all security classifications. It holds women on remand who are waiting to appear in court, assesses newly-sentenced prisoners, and manages women who are serving their sentences. A mother and baby unit means babies up to the age of 12 months can live with their mothers, if it is decided it is in the child's best interests.

Bandyup provides prisoners with work and other prison-based opportunities and activities, including self-development and therapeutic programs. Women are rewarded for demonstrating a keen work ethic and effort.

A man locking/unlocking a prison cell door

Despair of the women inside Western Australia's most overcrowded prison

Letters and poetry show the frustration among female prisoners at Bandyup, where the inmates would rather risk sharing with male prisoners than endure the ‘crisis’ conditions any longer

W omen inside Bandyup, Western Australia’s most overcrowded prison, have written of their frustration and despair at the cramped conditions, with one suggesting that sharing with male prisoners would be better than staying put.

A letter written by one inmate and obtained with permission by Guardian Australia said women should be moved into the male-only prison Hakea immediately, rather than waiting more than 12 months for a dividing wall to be built.

Poetry written by another inmate described conditions at the prison. She writes:

Doors are locked at six-thirty Sleeping on the floor – feels dirty. Toilet just there for two of us to bare So hot in here, causes so much despair.

On Monday there were 323 women living at Bandyup, down from a record high of 340 two weeks ago.

The ageing facility was built for 220 people but women have been sharing cells to make room, with some sleeping on mattresses on the floor. Most of the prison is not air-conditioned.

The corrective services minister, Joe Francis, announced in December that 256 women would be moved to Hakea remand prison, which, like Bandyup, is located in Perth’s suburban fringe, as soon as a dividing wall can be built between the units intended for women and the wider male prison population.

But the prisoner’s letter said conditions at Bandyup would reach a “crisis” point by the time the wall was complete.

“Some female prisoners cannot safely be doubled up with others because of their history of sexual predation or harming others. Doubling these women up places other prisoners at risk,” the writer said.

“The department has a duty of care to these vulnerable prisoners that they are refusing to honour.”

Marc Newhouse from Bandyup Action Group said the woman’s willingness to move unsegregated into the male prison population showed how desperate conditions at Bandyup had become.

“Many of the women in Bandyup will have abusive partners in Hakea,” he said. “Obviously, we don’t support this suggestion.”

Double-bunking in the women’s prison estate has spread to Boronia pre-release centre, WA’s flagship women’s rehabilitation facility.

The Department of Corrective Services confirmed some women were “sharing rooms” at Boronia, which it said was designed to be large enough for double-occupancy, and suggested that “many female prisoners request to share a cell for companionship, peer support, wellbeing and orientation into the prison environment”.

“This arrangement can be particularly beneficial for new, vulnerable or special-needs prisoners as they adapt to life in prison.”

But the opposition prisons spokesman, Paul Papalia, said the justification of new, nervous prisoners did not make sense at Boronia, which is intended as a last stop for long-term prisoners to prepare them for release into the outside world.

Papalia said double-bunking at Boronia also undermined one of its key features, which was to allow women to have their children to stay overnight with them. “If you’re sharing a room, obviously your children can’t stay,” he said.

Papalia repeated a call for women to be moved into the privately run 80-bed Wandoo prison, a facility that is tailored to young men. That suggestion is supported by the Bandyup Action Group and the Western Australian Prison Officers’ Union.

prison fence

Francis has ruled out that option. Instead, the department said 30 women would move to the new Eastern Goldfields regional prison in June.

The union’s secretary, John Welch, said small additions such as Eastern Goldfields were not enough to keep pace with the growth in female prisoner numbers, which have grown from 475 in March 2014 to 525 on Monday.

He said concerns about interrupting the specialist program for Wandoo’s 50 or so young male prisoners – who could be moved into new units at Acacia, WA’s other Serco-run prison – should not be prioritised over the “crisis” in women’s prisons.

“We are in a crisis in women’s prisons and it’s great that we can think about what’s ideal for young male prisoners, but we are not thinking in the same way about female prisoners,” he said.

“We actually need to put some priority into women’s prisons for a change.”

Welch said conditions at Bandyup were appalling and could lead to a higher rate of recidivism. “I’m not saying that prisons should be luxurious experiences, but they should be decent,” he said.

Newhouse said pressure on prisons could be reduced immediately if the government provided the legal assistance necessary for women to use existing mechanisms – such as bail and parole – to secure their release. He said the government could also “easily” change the policy on fine defaulting to allow more outstanding fines to be served out as community service orders, rather than prison time.

Instead, Francis has promised to increase the jail time required to “cut out” a fine. People with outstanding fines in WA can “cut out” the amount owed at a rate of $250 per day of jail time.

Newhouse said the action group was examining the legal grounds to push for a review of all sentenced prisoners in Bandyup and a mass amnesty of low-level offences in order to deal with chronic overcrowding.

He said many women in Bandyup were not dangerous and would not be there were it not for the state’s tough-on-crime laws.

Guardian Australia has been told of one woman, a homeless amputee, who was charged with assaulting the police officer called to “calm her down” after someone let down the tyres of her wheelchair. Under WA law she was sentenced to a mandatory 12 months in jail for assaulting a public officer.

“We have been calling for a review of mandatory sentencing laws for years, and it’s fallen on deaf ears,” Newhouse said.

“They can play around with the sentences bit by bit but eventually they are going to have to change the law.” He said a whole-of-government approach was needed that would think about law and order, what is effective, and what is not.

Former WA inmate says moving women from Greenough Regional Prison a mistake

A woman stands in under a large tree facing the camera in a black t-shit, hands clapsed in front.

A former prisoner at one of Western Australia's female detention facilities has criticised the government's decision to relocate female inmates.

Denni Boddington said learning to drive and other skills she gained during her time at Greenough Regional Prison in WA's Midwest were the reason she had managed to stop using drugs and improve her life since her release.

WA Corrective Services Commissioner Brad Royce  announced in February  the 27 women housed in Greenough Regional Prison, 400 kilometres north of Perth, would be relocated to other WA prisons to make room for a booming male prisoner population.

Ms Boddington said the move was a step backwards after significant improvements were made to the infrastructure and services provided to women prisoners at Greenough in recent years.

She said it was hard to get into a course at Bandyup prison in Perth.

"When you get sent down there it's like you're starting your whole prison sentence all over again," she said.

A close-up photo of a woman's hands.

"There's so many girls down there on waiting lists for courses.

"They end up achieving nothing in prison."

She said the reintegration program at Greenough had helped her.

"If it wasn't for these mobs, I'd probably be back in jail," she said.

Progress 'going backwards'

Ms Boddington said the move made her question the recent installation of a stand-alone $12.3 million women's precinct at Greenough, which opened less than two years before the women were moved.

"What was the use of that," she said.

"Where did all that money go? Did they renovate that for the men? Did they know that they were going to do it all along?"

The relocation also follows the start-up of a celebrated domestic violence program, Leave Safe Stay Safe, which only lasted nine months into a three-year trial at Greenough Regional Prison.

Greenough Regional Prison entrance

The program, run by Geraldton-based Regional Alliance West, offered one-on-one support and legal advice to women victim-survivors of family and domestic violence as they neared the end of their sentences.

Commissioner Royce said 12 of the 27 women being relocated were participants in the program and Perth-based contractor Gosnells Community Legal Centre would take over the running of the service.

Off-country visit concerns

Commissioner Royce said women from the Geraldton area could visit their families online and may return to Greenough on an "ad hoc" basis for family visits.

He said the department had "things in place" for a portion of women who were primary caregivers to continue visits with their children.

A police officer in front of a podium

However, Ms Boddington said being taken off-country would devastate some of the women.

"I reckon it's really sad — it's not fair," she said.

"They say that they're still going to arrange visits, but how long in between? Every three months? Every six months?

"A child doesn't deserve to see their mother [only once] every three months."

Commissioner Royce apologised for the difficulties the relocation would cause community members.

"At the end of the day, I've got a lot of things coming up including the Roebourne air conditioning works, and I need to free up space," he said.

"So it's on me to make sure that if I have available beds, I make the best use of them."

Prison watchdog monitors

Inspector for Custodial Services Eamon Ryan said the move was not ideal, but absolutely necessary.

A man in a jacket and shirt with glasses looks serious.

"They [prisons] are bursting at the seams," he said.

"Family members who don't have a vehicle or who may be elderly and don't drive, it will be much more difficult for them.

"But as I understand it, they're going to try and make some allowances for that."

He said his office would closely monitor the relocation and check-in with the women who were displaced.

A Department of Justice spokesperson said women prisoners who were relocated from Greenough Regional Prison to metropolitan prisons had access to more criminogenic programs and services.

They also said Corrective Services was working closely with the Office of the Commissioner for Victims of Crime to ensure the Leave Safe Stay Safe program for former Greenough prisoners was separate from the program run at Bandyup Women's Prison.

Booking.com Hit With EU’s ‘Gatekeeper’ Status, Faces Tighter Regulation

Sean O'Neill , Skift

May 13th, 2024 at 8:56 AM EDT

Online travel giant Booking.com will be held to a stricter regulatory standard in 27 European countries, but it remains to be seen what the true impact will be.

Sean O'Neill

The European Commission said on Monday it had designated Booking.com’s parent company, Booking Holdings, as having “gatekeeper” regulatory status under the European Union’s  Digital Markets Act . The move came as part of a broader effort to rein in tech giants such as Google and Apple.

Booking has six months to submit a report outlining how it complies with certain obligations. Non-compliance could lead to fines of up to 10% of the company’s total worldwide revenue.

“We have been working with the European Commission for some time as we anticipated today’s decision,” said a Booking Holdings spokesperson. “We are reviewing their designation decision now and will continue to work constructively with them as we develop solutions to comply.”

Stricter Regulations

The move will impose stricter obligations on Booking.com regarding content moderation, fair competition, and making it easier for consumers to switch to other providers. The European Commission said its action will make sure Booking is “offering more choice and freedom to end users and fair access of business users to the gatekeeper services.”

Under the Digital Markets Act, tech companies having at least an $82 billion market cap and 45 million active monthly users face mandates on how they do business in Europe.

Skift has followed the story since 2020 when European Commission antitrust czar  Margrethe Vestager floated the idea that Booking.com might be designated as a gatekeeper . Skift has noted that the potential impact may be overblown , given how previous efforts to change the contracts Booking.com and other online travel players have with hotel companies didn’t much change the dynamics in Europe.

Brussels last year blocked Booking’s bid for eTraveli, a smaller online travel agency, claiming the deal would lead to higher consumer prices.

Vestager said in a press statement that the decision means that vacationers “will start benefiting from more choice and hotels will have more business opportunities.”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken made an unannounced visit to Ukraine on Tuesday to reaffirm US support for the war-torn country.

The State Department said the top Biden administration diplomat would be meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other key officials during his stop in Kyiv to “discuss battlefield updates, the impact of new U.S. security and economic assistance, long-term security and other commitments, and ongoing work to bolster Ukraine’s economic recovery,” according to the Associated Press.

Blinken, 62, is also slated to deliver a speech in the Ukrainian capital later Tuesday in which he will tout Ukraine’s “strategic successes” amid Russia’s invasion, a senior US official told the outlet .

Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Ukraine unannounced on Tuesday to reaffirm US support for the war-torn country.

The secretary of state is also expected to stress that Ukraine must ramp-up efforts to fight government corruption if it seeks to integrate itself with the West, according to the US official.

The trip marks Blinken’s fourth visit to Ukraine since Russian troops stormed its border in February of 2022.

His visit comes days after the Biden administration pledged another $400 million in military aid to Ukraine from existing US stockpiles.

Antony Blinken has visited Ukraine four times since Russian troops stormed President Volodymyr Zelensky's country in February 2022.

The latest package will provide Ukraine with much-needed surface-to-air missiles, artillery rounds and High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and ammunition, among other pieces of offensive and defensive weaponry.

It is the third tranche of aid for Kyiv since Congress approved $60 billion in additional funding last month.

The senior US official told the Associated Press that some of the US-provided artillery, air defense interceptors and long-range ballistic missiles have already reached the front lines.

With additional American aid in hand, Zelensky said Monday that the objective of his military is “crystal clear — to thwart Russia’s attempt to expand the war.”

“Now we are getting more and more results, destroying the occupier’s infantry and machinery,” the Ukrainian president said in his nightly address , noting that fierce fighting continues in the Kharkiv region and other parts of the country near the Russian border.

“It’s a challenging moment,” Blinken said during an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

“We are not going anywhere, and neither are more than some 50 countries that are supporting Ukraine,” he added. “That will continue, and if Putin thinks he can outlast Ukraine, outlast its supporters, he’s wrong.’’

The US has provided Ukraine roughly $50.6 billion in military aid since Russia’s invasion.

US company Booking Holdings added to European Union’s list for strict digital scrutiny

LONDON (AP) — Booking Holdings, the U.S. company that owns Booking.com and a number of other travel websites, has been added to the European Union’s list of companies now under heightened digital scrutiny.

The European Commission, the EU’s executive branch, said Monday that it’s classing Booking Holdings as an online gatekeeper and that the company’s Booking.com hotel reservation site meets the threshold to be classed as a “core platform service” under the 27-nation bloc’s Digital Markets Act . The sweeping set of rules is designed to prevent Big Tech platforms from dominating online markets.

European Commission Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager said the decision means that vacationers “will start benefiting from more choice and hotels will have more business opportunities.”

The company said it has “been working with the European Commission for some time as we anticipated today’s decision. We are reviewing their designation decision now and will continue to work constructively with them as we develop solutions to comply.”

Booking Holdings, based in Norwalk, Connecticut, owns a slew of other travel sites including Cheapflights, Kayak.com and Priceline as well as restaurant reservation platform OpenTable, but those platforms aren’t included in the EU decision.

Since the rules took effect earlier this year, half a dozen companies have already been classified as online gatekeepers. Some including Apple, Google and Meta are already facing investigations into whether they’re doing enough to comply.

Under the DMA, platforms must comply with a list of do’s and don’ts — such as not giving preference to their own services over rivals — under threat of hefty financial penalties or even breaking up businesses. The rules are designed to make digital markets “fairer” and more competitive by breaking up closed tech ecosystems that lock consumers into a single company’s products or services.

The commission said Booking.com “now has six months to comply with the relevant obligations under the DMA, offering more choice and freedom to end users and fair access of business users to the gatekeeper services.”

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

bandyup visit booking

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

bandyup visit booking

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

Top Destinations

This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed. European cities dominate the international list. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Travel Trends

As travelers make plans for summer and beyond, AAA Travel has identified the following trends:

  • Bucket Lists : Travelers taking once-in-a-lifetime trips
  • Milestones : Families booking anniversary, retirement, and family reunion trips
  • Asia : More travelers interested in visiting Asia, especially Japan
  • Solo Trips : More people, especially women, interested in traveling by themselves
  • Luxury Vacations : More travelers seeking high-end cruises and tours
  • Trains : Many travelers interested in rail vacations across New England, Canada, and Europe
  • Adventure in Nature : Travelers booking trips to Antarctica, Africa, and South Pacific

  Travel Agent Survey

A recent survey of AAA travel agents highlights topics travelers are frequently discussing when booking trips:

  • Travel Insurance : 51 % of agents say more travelers are interested in protecting their trips
  • 77% of agents say ocean cruises
  • 70% of agents say all-inclusive vacations
  • 67% of agents say river cruises

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).

A travel planner shares the 10 biggest mistakes people make while booking all-inclusive vacations

  • As a travel planner, I regularly stay at all-inclusive resorts and book luxury trips for my clients.
  • The vacations can be daunting and complicated to book, and many people make mistakes along the way.
  • Booking the cheapest room , requesting an ocean view, and always bringing kids isn't the way to go.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , one of my areas of expertise is booking all-inclusive vacations.

The luxury trips can be complex to book, so it's easy to get tripped up if you're new to them. And if you're spending upwards of $3,000 for a weeklong getaway for two, you want to ensure you're getting your money's worth.

Here are the biggest mistakes people make while booking all-inclusive vacations .

Jumping into internet searches before thinking about what you want

bandyup visit booking

When choosing an all-inclusive resort , it's important to consider your dream vacation before you even start looking online. Determining a trip bucket list will greatly help to narrow down your search.

I encourage clients to think about things like their budget, nonnegotiable amenities, ideal locations, flight accessibility, desired room features, and resort size.

Booking the cheapest room at the cheapest resort

bandyup visit booking

In all-inclusive travel, you truly get what you pay for.

I recommend focusing searches on properties with at least a 4.5 rating. Value properties often struggle to provide quality food options, comfortable accommodations, and adequate service.

Although entry-level rooms are the least expensive, booking them can also come at a price.

The cheapest rooms can have views of the parking lot or construction sites. Or they're located on the ground floor, which can get musty if you're in a humid, tropical location.

You can often upgrade to a better room for a minimal extra cost, and I think it's more than worth it. If you're really on a strict budget, shorten your trip by a day or two to allow for a higher-quality experience.

Taking your kids along every time

bandyup visit booking

There are many great kid-friendly, all-inclusive resorts, but taking an adults-only trip is so much fun.

Grab your friends, family, or significant others to rewind for a few days without the kids.

On a recent trip to Le Blanc Spa Resort in Cancún, my husband and I appreciated the time we spent reconnecting, unwinding, and unplugging from work and family responsibilities.

Forgetting to research the food

bandyup visit booking

One of the best parts of an all-inclusive vacation is enjoying the all-you-can-eat cuisine and top-shelf drink selections.

Spending up to a week at a luxury resort with mediocre food can be an unenjoyable experience. When reading reviews, p ay close attention to comments about the food quality.

I love the food and drinks at Palace, Sandals, and Beaches resorts and often recommend them to my clients.

Completely ruling out hurricane season

bandyup visit booking

Booking a trip to the Caribbean or Mexico in summer and fall ( hurricane season ) carries some risk, but prices are usually significantly lower than at other times of the year.

The weather can be gorgeous, and there's no guarantee your trip will be impacted by bad weather. If you're concerned, definitely keep an eye on the weather and add on travel insurance while you're booking.

My husband and I honeymooned in the Caribbean in the fall , and the weather was some of the best I have ever had on a vacation.

Booking an ocean-view room

bandyup visit booking

One of the biggest disappointments I hear from clients is that their view didn't meet their expectations.

Some resorts are more liberal with their categorization of partial-ocean-view and ocean-view rooms — maybe you can see a sliver of blue through the trees if you crane your neck.

If you want to see the beautiful blue of the sea from your balcony, you need to book an oceanfront room.

Limiting your search to tropical destinations

bandyup visit booking

Many popular all-inclusive resorts are in tropical locations , but there are also some great options in places like Canada, Europe, and Japan.

Club Med offers all-inclusive resorts worldwide. One of its newest offerings is Club Med Québec Charlevoix , which offers an all-inclusive ski experience in the winter and an adventure experience in the summer.

Trusting your friend's recommendations implicitly

bandyup visit booking

Your friend might have impeccable taste, but that doesn't mean their favorite resort meets your style or needs.

One of my clients might love a resort, but another may not enjoy the experience at all. Finding the resort that's right for you is a very personal process.

Not booking with a travel planner

bandyup visit booking

Sure, I'm a little biased, but hear me out: Choosing the right destinations and resorts for your all-inclusive vacation can be daunting. In Mexico alone, there are hundreds of lodgings to choose from.

Most travel planners offer complimentary services (we get commissions from hotels and other bookings), which can greatly reduce the headache of planning your trip.

I always look for the best pricing and make sure to support my clients before, during, and after their vacations so they can relax.

As part of being an agent, I also visit resorts to vet them for my clients. Reading reviews online can be helpful, but they can also be confusing, so I like to be able to make personal recommendations.
