Bryce Canyon National Park At-A-Glance

Before diving into the best photography locations in Bryce Canyon, here are a few highlights to help you plan your trip to Bryce:

  • Best Time to Visit Bryce Canyon National Park

Hands down, Bryce Canyon National Park is a great destination to  visit at any time of the year .

I have visited Bryce Canyon so many times at different times of the year and I have to honestly say that it is an awesome place to see no matter what month you visit!

What you need to keep in mind is that Bryce Canyon National Park sits at a  high elevation of 8,000 to 9,000 feet. With this being the case, the temperatures are much lower compared to any other National Parks in Utah.

So, no matter when you are visiting Bryce Canyon National Park, pack some warm clothes and dress in layers. Even in the summer, the evenings can be chilly.

  • Where to Stay in or near Bryce Canyon National Park

Nothing beats staying inside the park! However, there is only one lodge,  The Lodge at Bryce Canyon , available inside the park and accommodations are very limited. You should make reservations well ahead of your visit.

I have stayed at  Best Western Ruby’s Inn  numerous times and it is  comfortable and convenient located only 1 mile from the entrance to the park. Also, if you are heading to Escalante National Monument, then this is a good place to spend the night since it is next to Scenic Byway 12. If you are flying into Bryce Canyon Airport, then the hotel offers a free transfer service from the airport to the property.

Another place that I am recommending is  Best Western Plus Bryce Canyon Grand Hotel . It is also conveniently located right next to the entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park. The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable.

And finally, if you are traveling from Zion to Bryce Canyon , then my recommendation is to check out  Best Western East Zion Thunderbird Lodge . It is conveniently located between Zion and Bryce in Mount Carmel. The rooms are a good size with comfy beds!

  • How to Get to Bryce Canyon National Park

The closest major airports to Bryce Canyon National Park are in  Las Vegas (LAS), Nevada,  and  Salt Lake City (SLC), Utah.

There are smaller airports in  Cedar City (CDC), Utah,  and  St. George (SGU), Utah . I use Skyscanner  to browse flights and find the best price.

If you fly into any of the airports around Bryce Canyon National Park, you will have to  rent a car  and then drive.

  • How to Get Around in Bryce Canyon National Park

If you are visiting Bryce Canyon National Park  during the high season (summer) , then the best way to get around the park is by using  Bryce Canyon Shuttle System . Now, the shuttle is not mandatory, however, it is highly recommended, since finding a parking spot could be very challenging.

All in all, whenever I visited during the winter months, I have to honestly say, that I never had any problems driving in the park (no traffic jams) or finding a parking spot. However, summertime is a different story altogether!

  • Intrepid Scout’s Tip:

It costs $35 to enter the park. The entrance pass is good for 7 consecutive days. If you are visiting several national parks then make sure to get America the Beautiful National Park Pass . This $80 pass is valid for 12 months and gets you into all 400+ national park sites!

  • Important: Always check for the latest road or trail closures and changes to shuttle routes or schedules. Check HERE .

All in all, I have to say that Inspiration Point is one of the most instagrammable places in Bryce Canyon!

If you are looking for a stunning sunset photography location in Bryce Canyon National Park , then head to Paria View !

To be honest, if you are visiting Bryce Canyon National Park during summertime then use the shuttle ! It is easy to use and it stops at all the major viewpoints and you don’t have to waste time looking and waiting for a parking spot. Trust me, finding a parking spot can be tough during the summer months.

If you decide to take a shuttle, then get off at Bryce Point and walk over to Paria View . If you decide to drive, then there is a small parking lot next to Paria View and hopefully, you can find some empty spots.

Sunset Point - Best Sunrise Photography Location in Bryce Canyon

Sunset Point sits at 8,000 feet and offers the most dramatic views of Bryce Canyon’s Main Amphitheater .

I think that is the best sunrise photography location in Bryce Canyon National Park. However, I have to tell you that, it is absolutely stunning at any time of the day! The hoodoos seem to come alive in a. rainbow of color as the. light changes throughout the day.

Do not miss Thor’s Hammer ! It is one of the most well-known and most photographed hoodoo formations in Bryce Canyon National Park. Thor’s Hammer towers over the Silent City from Sunset Point’s vista.

The best part is that Navajo Loop Trail starts right at Sunset Point. It is one of the best hikes in Bryce Canyon National Park descending 550 feet into Bryce Canyon and allowing you to take some incredible photos of hoodoos up close and personal!

Bryce Point - Most Iconic Photography Location in Bryce Canyon

Bryce Point is famous for the sweeping views to the north, across the full length of the hoodoo-filled Bryce Amphitheater .

Inspiration, Sunset, and Sunrise Points can all be seen along the edge of the rim.

Bryce Point is well known for its breathtaking sunrises as well as stunning sunsets. You will not go wrong if you head directly to Bryce Point for a chance to catch a great sunset. This is a great spot to see a view of Boat Mesa reflecting the colors of the setting sun.

A Quick Read:

Bryce Point is the trailhead for Peek-a-Boo Loop Trail .

It is a great hike that will take you down to see the Wall of the Windows and Three Wise Men formations.

Also, do you ever wonder how Bryce Canyon got its name ?

Sometime in the 1850s, scouts were sent by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) to assess the land for its potential agricultural and grazing use. The church then sent Ebenezer Bryce and his wife Mary to settle in the Paria Valley , near Tropic, Utah.

Ebenezer and his family decided to settle right below what is now called the “Bryce Amphitheater” – today, this is the main part of the Park; the largest collection of hoodoos . Ebenezer grazed his cattle near the hoodoos and canyons and once wrote that this was a “helluva place to lose a cow”. If you’ve ever been to Bryce Canyon, I’m sure you’d agree! Regardless of losing cows, Bryce Canyon National Park is indeed one “helluva place”. Ebenezer Bryce built a road to the top of the Paunsaugunt Plateau for hauling timber. Pioneers started calling the place “Bryce’s Canyon” and that’s how Bryce Canyon got its name .

Wall Street and Sunrise Point - Best Spots for Bryce Canyon Night Photography

Wall Street and Sunrise Point are two of my favorite locations for nighttime photography in Bryce Canyon National Park.

Wall Street is the western section of the Navajo Loop Trail and gets its name from high, vertical cliffs and very narrow passages. It is a great location to get some awesome photos of hoodoos during the day as well.

Another location that I highly recommended for nighttime photography in Bryce Canyon National Park is Sunrise Point .

How to Photograph Sunrise in Bryce Canyon National Park

Actually, Bryce Canyon is the most beautiful just before sunrise . The light is softer and warmer before the sun appears on the horizon. It is known as the Golden Hour .

So, first of all, make sure to arrive at your favorite sunrise location in Bryce Canyon way before sunrise. I would say at least 30 minutes before sunrise. Just about 10 minutes before the actual sunrise , you will capture some awesome images.

Next, when the first rays of the sun start appearing above the horizon, hoodoos will reflect the light and literally start glowing . This is a great time to get more great pictures.

During this time use a tripod and remote shutter release . However, be quick because the rising sun will make the light too intense to take good pictures.

Also, a reminder! Since you. will be arriving well before sunrise, make sure to have a headlamp or a flashlight to help you navigate. from the parking lot to your favorite sunrise photography spot.

How to Photograph Sunset in Bryce Canyon National Park

All in all, the best light happens just after sunset . It is known as the Golden Hour . The light is warmer and softer and there are no sharp shadows during the Golden Hour.

In Bryce Canyon, during the Golden Hour, the hoodoos produce even warmer colors . In order to capture these colors you will need to use a long exposure selection on your camera.

How do you do a long exposure? Simply, turn your camera’s mode dial to Manual and use a slow shutter speed (5-30 seconds) for a longer exposure. Additionally, use your camera self-timer to take a photo.

Now, hang around a little bit more after the sunset and wait for the famous Blue Hour .

Sunset in Bryce Canyon

Sunset in Bryce Canyon National Park / Best Photography Locations in Bryce Canyon

The Blue Hour happens when the sun is at a significant depth below the horizon and residual, indirect sunlight takes on a predominantly blue shade.

During the Blue Hour, the Bryce Amphitheatre completely changes and the white tops of the hoodoos beautifully contrast with the deep dark orange colors of the canyon.

Also, pay attention to the sky! If you are lucky, you might get some beautiful shots of the background with an awesome sky.

How to Take Nighttime Photos in Bryce Canyon National Park

First of all, be patient and practice . It takes time to capture great images of the night sky. And, it takes a lot of experimenting  with the camera settings.

Follow these nighttime photography rules :

  • Have the camera on manual mode on a sturdy tripod . Turn off image stabilization.
  • Have a wide-angle lens between 14mm to 24mm to get a good view of the Milky Way in the frame along with the foreground.
  • Set the aperture to the widest – at least f2.8, but if you have only the kit lens, use it at 18mm / f3.5.
  • Start with the lowest ISO possible, about 1600. Depending on the result, you can decrease further or increase the ISO up to 3200, above which the image quality can start to deteriorate.
  • Put your lens on manual focus and focus on the brightest star in the sky. Zoom in on live view and turn the focus ring till the star shows up as a bright point on the screen.
  • Use the mirror lockup feature if using a DSLR to avoid blur due to camera movement.

Intrepid Scout's Photography Tips for Bryce Canyon

  • Zoom In on the Bryce Canyon

I think that it is ok to zoom in on Bryce Canyon! Needless to say, I often find myself struggling with a need to include the entire panorama in every photo and it is not always necessary.

The Bryce Canyon photography is overwhelming because it is simply impossible to convey the sheer magnitude of the Bryce Canyon in a single photo.

Being that, zoom in and capture the formations and clusters of hoodoos.

  • Arrive Early to Photograph Sunrise or Sunset in Grand Canyon National Park

Arrive way before sunrise or sunset to secure a good spot. It gets crowded at all the popular viewpoints, especially in the summertime.

Now, if you are shooting at sunrise, then I am sure you will be arriving at Bryce Canyon in complete darkness, so do not forget to grab a flashlight or even better take a headlamp to help you find your way from the parking lot to your favorite spot.

  • Include Foreground, Middleground, and Background in Your Photos of the Bryce Canyon

It is important that you give your photos a nice dimensional perspective. First of all, find a strong foreground like a tree, or some rocks. Then, focus on middleground, and finally a background.

The Bryce Canyon is vast and getting a sense of scale can be a bit challenging. Another good idea is to include people standing at the rim of Bryce Canyon. It will help put things in perspective and give some sense of the vastness of the area.

  • Bring a Tripod to Photograph Sunrise and Sunset in the Bryce Canyon

Having a tripod will help you minimize the risk of any movement while you are capturing longer exposures and allowing more light to enter the camera.

  • Photograph the Bryce Canyon at Sunrise or Sunset

Actually, to be specific, the best light is about 15-30 minutes before sunrise. It is the proverbial “golden hour” during which the daylight is softer and redder. Needless to say, it is the time during which the hoodoos start to glow.

bryce canyon photography tours

I will be part of a Death Valley photo workshop in December of 2023. As I am flying in and out of Las Vegas for this, I figured on staying a couple of extra days to go up to Bryce Canyon. I will be there sometime around the 9th-11th of December. I realize it is impossible to predict what weather will be like, but I am curious as to how much of the park is usually closed by this time, and how many of the roads are still open. Thanks!

bryce canyon photography tours

Hi Paul, December is a great time to visit Bryce Canyon National Park. If it snows, you will get some stunning pictures of the park. The main area around the lodge is always accessible. The scenic drive might be closed until the snow is cleared. You should do some hiking in the canyon to get photos of the hoodoos up close. It is always warmer in the canyon and snow will melt fast. Check out some other of my posts about Bryce to get a better idea of the best hikes, places to stay, etc. Good luck with your trip!

Action Photo Tours

  • Bryce Canyon is an incredible destination to photograph. Let us take you to the best spots as we chase the light.
  • Large, colorful hoodoos and crumbling sandstone walls are densely packed throughout the canyon. Viewpoints from the rim afford gigantic views into the valley below. Hiking down into the hoodoos offers a fresh perspective and opens the palette of photographic possibility.
  • How much hiking we do depends entirely on the group and their photography goals.
  • Small group size capped at 5 people to ensure personalized instruction and individualized attention.
  • We go early in the morning to be there before sunrise. Not only is the light sublime, but the park isn't crowded either. Contact Us if you would prefer a sunset or night tour.

Trip Details

  • Tour Length:  8 hours
  • Drive Time:   Around 90 mins each way.
  • Time Spent on Location:  Approx 5 hrs
  • Tour Departure Time:  Departure times vary throughout the year. Please refer to the time listed on your booking.  Plan to arrive 10 mins early to load your gear and finish the check-in process.  The return time is approximately 8 hours after the departure time. Note that we operate on Utah time which is one hour ahead of Las Vegas.  During the months of Daylight Savings (approx mid-March through early Nov), Utah is also one hour ahead of Arizona.
  • Minimum Group Size:   Our tours require a minimum of 2 people for the base price. After you book, we will try to combine single travelers with others. In the event the minimum is not met, you will have the option to pay the 2-person rate and go on a private tour, reschedule to a different date, or cancel and get a full refund.
  • Tour Meetup Location:  You will meet at our office in Kanab, UT. The address will be given in your confirmation email. This is a safe place to park your vehicle and you can leave any valuables inside. Once you arrive, you'll load your gear and sign a liability release waiver. Las Vegas is the closest major airport to Kanab. There is no public transportation to Kanab, so you’ll need your own rental car or private vehicle. We recommend that you stay in a hotel in Kanab the evening of your tour. There are many good hotels in the area like the Best Western, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Comfort Inn & Suites, and the Canyons Botique.
  • Permits:   We hold commercial use permits for Bryce Canyon National Park.

Bryce Canyon Photo Tour

  • Tour Meetup in Bryce Canyon City: We often get requests to pick-up folks in Bryce Canyon City just outside the National Park. If you want us to pick you up here, PLEASE CONTACT US AHEAD OF TIME TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS. Note that the tour time will be shorter since we won’t have the 90min drive time to/from Kanab.
  • Weather Conditions:  Bryce Canyon National Park can be impressive in many different conditions.  Since this is a high elevation location (8000-9000ft), it can be very cold and sometimes windy here in the morning.  Make sure you dress appropriately.   Winter snow, fog, monsoon storms, rainbows, and the like often accompany inclement weather. Since the roads are paved, we won’t have any access issues unless there is really deep snow.  Do note that there are certain areas of the park that are closed off during the winter months.  We cannot offer refunds due to weather unless we cannot go out at all. Don’t despise inclement weather as that is often when you get the most dramatic photos!  Just make sure you dress and prepare adequately.
  • Hiking / Fitness : Bryce trips can be tailored to the fitness levels of the group. If you don’t want to do much hiking, then we can primarily do a driving tour with only short walks.  However, we highly recommend you hike down into the canyon to get a new perspective.
  • Trip Itinerary: The exact tour itinerary is flexible based on current conditions, fitness levels of the group, and what the group is interested in. We will go to different spots depending on the time of year. We’ll make sure you get the best images possible!
  • Night Photography: Bryce Canyon boasts some of the darkest skies in the country and is fantastic for night photos!  Contact Us to inquire about night photography opportunities in Bryce.
  • Food/Water: We do not provide food on our outings.  All participants should bring food/water to hold them until lunch. Many folks will eat their breakfast during the drive from Kanab.  We will have a cooler where you can store food and drink.
  • What to Wear: You should check the weather forecast prior to coming on the trip.  It’s best to assume that Bryce will be colder than expected.  Make sure you bring some warm layers, long pants, hat, and gloves.  Don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen.  If rain or snow is in the forecast, bring a rain jacket.  We recommend wearing sturdy footwear in Bryce Canyon National Park due to the possible presence of loose terrain, snow, and ice.  For winter hiking, we recommend gaitors and micro-traction devices.
  • Cell Phones: Bring your cell phone along! They are great for capturing candid images. Plus, most folks will have cell service in the park. There are USB ports in our vehicles so bring a charging cable if you need one.
  • Group Size: Our groups will never exceed 5 people per guide.  We like to keep our photo tours small so we can give adequate individual attention.  For those photographers that feel more independent, we will allow you to wander away from the group and explore on your own within reasonable limits.
  • Safety: Our guides are trained in CPR/First-Aid. All 4WD vehicles are equipped with extraction equipment and a first-aid kit. We carry a satellite beacon with us in case of emergencies outside of cell range.
  • Instructors:   Due to scheduling complexities, we don't know which instructor will accompany your group until a day or two prior.  If you want a specific instructor, then please Contact Us to make your request. Although we'll do our best to make it happen, please note there are no guarantees.

Camera Gear

  • Camera Gear: You can make use of just about any lens in Bryce. A wide angle zoom lens is useful from the rim and down in the canyon (equivalent 16-35 on a full-frame camera or 10-22mm on a crop sensor).  A mid-range lens in the range of 30-100mm will provide nice scale and compression.  Telephoto lenses will be useful for isolating small sections of hoodoos and  for any wildlife opportunities we encounter.  Bring as many lenses as you like - just ensure your pack isn’t too heavy if we’re going to be doing significant hiking.  All participants should bring a tripod. For filters, a circular polarizer can come in handy when there are clouds in the sky (it’s best to avoid polarizers on cloudless days).  A neutral density filter can be nice to create long exposures for fast moving clouds. Don’t forget extra batteries, memory cards, and cleaning supplies.   Please contact us if you’d like to rent any camera gear for your outing.
  • Cancellation/Re-Scheduling: Please see our Terms and Conditions .

Bryce Canyon Photo Tour Itinerary

During the photo tour, we will take advantage of the best light during daylight hours to take advantage of our time in the park. We will be shooting sunrises and sunsets as well as scenes during the day.

Day 1: Arrival

On day 1, the group will meet in Bryce Canyon village for a welcome briefing at 7:00 p.m.

Days 2-3: Bryce Canyon National Park

Our first photo excursion will be the sunrise shoot on day 2. After that, we’ll head back to the hotel for breakfast, and after that, we’ll head back to the park for some moderate hiking mixed with photography. We’ll call it a day with a sunset shoot in the park.

Day 3 will have the same structure as day 2.

Day 5: Sunrise shoot and departure

On Day 4, we’ll wrap up the photo tour after the sunrise shoot.

All scheduled photoshoots are subject to change. We will do our best to utilize given weather conditions to maximize shooting opportunities for each day. We will provide a tentative itinerary and meeting times at our initial meeting. The itinerary will remain flexible according to conditions on any given day.

Essential Information

The closest airports to Bryce Canyon National Park are the Bryce Canyon Airport (BCE), located just outside the park’s boundaries, and the St. George Regional Airport (SGU), located approximately 130 miles south of the park.

However, both of these airports offer limited flight options and may not be the most convenient or cost-effective choices for travelers. The nearest major airports with more flight options are the Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (LAS) and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), both of which are approximately 270 miles from Bryce Canyon National Park.

We recommend renting a vehicle at the airport. It will also give you the ability to explore other unique locations around Utah before and/or after the photo tour. We will be carpooling during the photo tour. However, you are welcome to use your own vehicle if conditions permit.

Everybody is responsible for their lodging arrangement. Jan and A.J. are staying at Ruby’s Inn in Bryce Canyon—you are welcome to book your accommodation here or find accommodation in Bryce Canyon that suits your needs better.

Since we will be shooting sunrises, sunsets and throughout the day, normal eating schedules may be compromised during this photo tour.

We may go as a group for a dinner here and a breakfast there (after photographing), but for the most part each participant will be on their own food-wise. We will provide complimentary water and snacks at each shoot location.

Participants of the Bryce Canyon Photography Tour should be prepared for a moderate level of hiking difficulty. The itinerary includes treks along several trails, including the Navajo Loop Trail and Queen’s Garden Trail, which are both rated as moderate hikes. These hikes include sections with steep inclines, uneven terrain, and narrow paths, so participants should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable with hiking in these conditions. Come prepared to hike between 4 and 6 miles per day.

The Mossy Cave Trail, which is included in the itinerary on the second day, is an easier hike, rated as easy. However, participants should still be prepared for some uneven terrain and rocky sections, as well as some steep inclines in places. It’s essential to wear appropriate footwear, such as hiking boots or sturdy sneakers with good traction, to ensure stability and prevent slips or falls.

Participants should also be aware that the hikes take place at high elevation, ranging from approximately 7,000 to 8,000 feet above sea level. This altitude can make the hikes feel more strenuous, especially for those who are not acclimated to the elevation. It’s essential to take breaks as needed, stay hydrated, and listen to your body to avoid altitude sickness.

Overall, the photography tour in Bryce Canyon National Park is an active and adventurous experience, with some challenging hikes and uneven terrain. However, the stunning views and unique landscapes make it a rewarding and unforgettable trip for those who are prepared for the physical demands.

You can also take our self-assessment quiz that indicates whether our photo tours are a good fit for you. Get your personalized report now .

Intermediate to advanced. Each participant is expected to know the basics regarding proper exposure and composition as well as being comfortable operating their camera in manual mode and aperture priority mode.

Bryce Canyon Photo Tour Testimonials

Final notes.

Participants in the Bryce Canyon National Park photography tour should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions in November. While the days can be sunny and mild, temperatures can drop rapidly at night, and snow or other wintry precipitation is possible. It’s essential to check the weather forecast before your trip and pack accordingly to ensure you have the appropriate clothing for any conditions you may encounter.

During the daytime hikes, participants should dress in layers to allow for easy adjustments as the temperature changes throughout the day. A base layer of moisture-wicking fabric is ideal to keep you dry and comfortable, followed by a warm mid-layer such as a fleece or down jacket. A waterproof and wind-resistant outer layer is also essential to protect against rain, snow, or wind.

For the sunrise shoot at Agua Canyon Overlook, temperatures can be particularly chilly, especially in the early morning hours. It’s essential to bring warm layers such as a hat, gloves, and a warm down jacket to keep you comfortable during the shoot. A sturdy pair of boots with good traction is also recommended, as the ground may be slick or icy in places.

In the evenings, temperatures can drop rapidly, so it’s essential to have warm clothing such as a down jacket, hat, and gloves to stay comfortable during the sunset shoot. It’s also a good idea to bring hand warmers or other accessories to keep your fingers and toes warm during the colder parts of the day.

Overall, participants should be prepared for a range of temperatures and weather conditions during the Bryce Canyon National Park Photography Tour in November. By packing appropriate clothing and accessories, you can ensure that you stay comfortable and enjoy the stunning landscapes and photo opportunities the park has to offer.

Sunrise is approximately at 7:57 a.m and sunset is approximately at 6:27 p.m. The seasonal timing of this photo tour will allow for normal dinner times and more rest— as the days are much shorter in early November.

Perspectives – A Photographer’s Guide to Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon is like more National Parks in the US, a photogenic gem. Epic landscapes offering such diverse scenes, you could spend years visiting and photographing them all across the country then, once finished, you’d have to visit them all again and experience a different season!

Bryce Canyon is spectacular, winter sees snow sprinkles contrast with the earthy tones on the hoodoos while warmer months provide the chance to hike amongst these towering formations and explore the park a little closer.

On a road trip through Arizona and Utah in 2019, my best friend Sarah and I mapped out a rough plan of places to visit based on suggestions from others and a bit of online research. We had been told to spend more time in Zion over Bryce Canyon and while we were really impressed with the dramatic cliffs of Zion, sunrise at Bryce Canyon had us developing heart eyes.

Bryce Canyon Photography Locations

The ochre coloured formations, scattered like a maze across the canyon provide a seemingly endless subject to photograph. We had only allocated enough time to photograph sunrise here but I wanted to write this article to make sure if you’re visiting, you know where to go and how much time to allocate while exploring the scenic Rim Trail!

If we could’ve stayed 4 days I’m still not sure it would’ve been enough. Or maybe I just would’ve had far too many orange toned photos on my hard drive 🙂

Bryce Canyon Photography Locations, Utah - US National Parks

Where is Bryce Canyon National Park?

Located in Utah, Bryce Canyon is roughly 1hr 20mins drive north-east from Zion National Park in Arizona. If you’re visiting one, you definitely need to visit the other.

You can spend the night in Bryce at either the Best Western PLUS or Bryce View Lodge , or if you’re a group why not rent a luxury lodge . Staying in Bryce gives you the ability to be up before the sun and experience the magic of a sunrise seeping through the hoodoos. There are also campgrounds, Sunset Campground close to Sunset Point and the North Campground which is closer to the village of Bryce.

I’d strongly suggest having your own car while photographing in Utah and/or Arizona, it just give you the flexibility of stopping when you want and getting up at crazy hours to capture the best light. For some US National Parks you’ll need to park your car and then take a shuttle (like the Grand Canyon), but for Bryce Canyon, you can actually take the 18mile scenic route and self-drive to each of the scenic spots.

Bryce Canyon Photography Locations

In the busier summer months, it can work out better to plan an entire day and take the shuttle to avoid waiting for car parks at each location. Perhaps take the shuttle to one point then walk to the next.

Please check the Bryce Canyon NPS website for updates and closures. Most locations, campground and driving routes are closed or restricted during the winter months.

A map of the Bryce Canyon viewpoints mentioned in this guide –

What makes bryce canyon photogenic.

Bryce Canyon is not just a single canyon but multiple natural amphitheaters carved into a plateau. There are thousands of spire-like rock towers called hoodoos and it’s these marvels that bring the wow factor. As the sunlight changes throughout the day, they produce shadows and their colours change from deep to light orange then back to darker tones again.

You can explore the canyon from the scenic lookouts above, or venture deep into the canyon and get up close to these incredible natural formations.

A Few Photo Tips for Bryce Canyon

  • If you’re taking a tripod, just know that the ground can be uneven and at key times like sunrise and sunset, there can be a lot of people. I was photographing sunrise hand-held with the Olympus E-M1X so I didn’t have to set up a tripod and could instead rely on the camera’s amazing internal stability.
  • Having a variety of lenses at your disposal will allow you to capture various compositions of the landscapes. Hopefully you’re as in awe as I was and can’t stop taking photos! I used a collection of the M.Zuiko Pro Lenses ; 12-40mm f2.8, 7-14mm f2.8 (wide-angle) and the 40-150mm f2.8 .
  • If possible, give yourself the time to capture sunrise from at least two vantage points (my pick would be Sunrise Point one day, Bryce or Inspiration Point another).
  • It can get really chilly in the early morning then heat up quickly once the sun rises, be prepared with some gloves when photographing or your hands will get cold fast!
  • Sunrise is better than sunset at Bryce Canyon as the hoodoos are in shadows in the late afternoon. Sunrise however provides that gorgeous glow across the amphitheatres and hoodoos.
  • Oh and you can’t fly your drone within the National Park.

Bryce Canyon Photography Locations

Photography Locations at Bryce Canyon

Depending on how long you’re staying in Bryce Canyon, there are numerous hiking trails and adventures to have within the canyon, or you can cruise along the scenic route and stop off at each of the viewpoints.

With limited time, we opted for the scenic route and I can tell you from that experience alone, I know I’ll be back to visit Bryce Canyon again. I couldn’t stop taking photos! Some spots I’ve heard are worth a visit but require a hike include the Natural Bridge and Agua Canyon then further down the road past Bryce Point you’ll find Rainbow Point and Yovimpa Point.

Bryce Canyon Photography Locations

Sunrise Point

Rushing to find a good vantage point before the sun rose (I’m not a morning person!), we assumed Sunrise Point would be the spot to go. I mean, it’s sitting right there in the name. Nabbing a car park close to the trail, we threw our camera bags on our backs and ran (okay, fast walked) to see what we were in for.

Immediately blown away by the canyon, we tried to find a good vantage point to capture the scene once the sun appeared above the horizon. Of course, being Sunrise Point at sunrise meant that there were already quite a few people in position and the official viewpoint was filled.

Along the Rim Trail you’ll find plenty of vantage points where you can frame the scene using trees that are clinging to the cliff or to get a good angle to zoom down into the canyon below.

My favourite spot was on a path that veered into the canyon just below the scenic lookout. It’s quite steep but provided access to so many great compositions and really inspired us once the sun started to sparkle across Bryce Canyon.

You can read my tips about the best camera settings for sunrise here but at Bryce Canyon, you’ll need to get ready for the moment when the sun peeks above the distance ridge. It offers a great opportunity to photograph sun stars and really capture the shadows as they dance across the landscape.

Bryce Canyon Photography Locations

Bryce Point

The highest (8296ft) viewing point over Bryce Canyon, there is easy access to a substantial viewing platform with expansive views over the landscape. I would suggest spending a bit of time here to give yourself the opportunity of capturing the many visible details within the landscape. Shuttle buses come and go so if you wait it out long enough, you’ll get some time to yourself – especially earlier in the morning.

You can photograph from this point at any time of the day, if you’re spending a few days in the area definitely try sunrise here as there’s a great view across the canyon toward the east. Alternatively, during the day there are plenty of features to focus on in the canyon below.

Bryce Canyon Photography Locations

Keep your eye out for hikers on the Peekaboo Loop Trail below, they’re great to compose within your image to showcase just how truly immense the scenery and hoodoo formations are. From the viewpoint there is a great view over to the Wall of Windows, a subject worth photographing from Inspiration Point also for the opposite vantage point.

Nearby there’s also Paria View which is worth stopping at when heading to or from Bryce Point. It provides an angle facing south and some actually prefer this to the main amphitheatre, it also has less crowds!

If you’re interested in tips about using a zoom lens while travelling I’ve written an article about it here , I used my Olympus 40-150mm while photographing from Bryce Point and loved getting in nice and close to the patterns and textures of the canyon.

Bryce Canyon Photography Locations

Inspiration Point

This was an unexpected favourite of mine with a path leading right along the edge of a steep drop into the canyon below. From the car park there is a steep path uphill to one of the best viewpoints of Bryce Canyon.

Peer down into the canyon below where rock has slid directly downhill, creating what looks like a funnel into the warm, earthy funnel below. From Inspiration Point you can compose your shots using things like tree roots found along the path and also overhanging trees since it’s a more of a natural trail and viewing platform.

There’s the chance to photograph beautiful contrasting tones throughout the hoodoos below and also photograph across to the Wall of Windows. This striking feature held my attention for a long time as I tried to compose the scene using the white tones in the foreground against the vibrant rouge tones in the back.

Bryce Canyon Photography Locations

Sunset Point

As one of the major car parks, Sunset Point can get busy, but it is for good reason. From this lookout you’re able to peer into the canyon below (I know I’ve said this for every location but each is so different!) and it feels much closer than the others.

The Navajo Loop Trail starts here so it gives you the opportunity to either venture out on the entire hike or to just get down into the canyon for a little adventure. The ridge lines and view down into the canyon make this viewpoint worth a stop.

One of the highlights of Sunset Point is the ability to compose the hoodoos with the textures and shadows of the nearby ridgelines. There’s the mighty Thor’s Hammer and so many fascinating structure to use within your images.

Beautiful photos! Great info regarding Bryce Canyon! I went there once but only had time to drive through there quickly. Going again in April 2021 for two days. Will keep all your info regarding the park in mind.

Also great to see another Olympus user! Don’t have the EM1X, but have all three of the EM1 (I, II, and III) as well as the E620 4/3. Keep your fingers crossed JIP keeps the Olympus tradition going.

Thor’s hammer.

Rock formations under a sunset

Marvel who? We’re talking about Bryce Canyon’s Hammer.

This unique hoodoo stands out from the forested canyon around it, providing a beautiful contrast between the red rock and the green pines.

And let me tell you, this makes for a great photo.

This site is located just below the Sunset Point lookout. Explore the trail a little bit to find the right angle and distance for your picture.

📷 Bryce Canyon can be difficult to shoot at sunset because many rock formations in one area can lead to long shadows over the view you’re trying to photograph. Luckily, Thor’s Hammer is pretty isolated from its fellow hoodoos, so taking a pic at sunset isn’t as big of an issue.

Rainbow Point

Hoodoos in the distance surrounded by trees

Rainbow Point is one of the best photo spots in Bryce Canyon.

Take the park road all the way to the end until you reach a parking lot. You’ll park here to see the Rainbow and Yovimpa Points.

Rainbow Point looks out on a strangely colorful array of hoodoos in Rainbow Canyon, as well as some other notoriously beautiful views, such as the Table Cliff Plateau.

Oh, you can’t believe how a bunch of rock formations can be like a rainbow? It might seem a little far-fetched, but it’s real, and it’s one of the best things about photographing Bryce Canyon.

📷 This is one of the spots that the sunset will ignite. You won’t want to miss capturing a picture or two here at golden hour.

Now, if you’re looking for a real show-stopping view to take a picture of, Paria View at sunset should be at the top of your list.

The enormous rock tiers layer upon each other to create a castle of red rock. Add a layer of warm sunlight rays, and it becomes magical.

To get a truly unique picture of Bryce National Park, come back to Paria Point in the winter. The snow adds another layer to the rocky cliffs, and you may not even recognize the view you gazed upon so fondly just months before.

And yet, it is just as beautiful.

Natural Bridge

Arch in a park made out of red rock

When driving along the park highway, look for the Natural Bridge sign for another Bryce Canyon photography favorite.

This arch, hand-crafted by erosion, stands mightily at almost 125 feet tall, just waiting to be photographed.

And if you look closely, you’ll be able to find mini versions of the Natural Bridge all over Bryce Canyon.

📷 This view is best photographed in mid-morning when the sun is high in the sky. Experiment with different angles to frame your preferred scenery through the arch.

Bryce Point

Red and orange striped rock formations under the sun

Bryce Point. The most iconic view in the park, and probably the most taken picture of Bryce Canyon National Park.

This view represents the name well, providing breathtaking views of the hoodoo labyrinth, called Bryce Amphitheater, below at any given time of the day.

And although it is beautiful at any time, Bryce Point should be your number one choice to see a sunrise in Bryce Canyon . The early morning rays flood the Amphitheater, bringing it to life for all those witnessing it.

📷 This is a great photo spot for panoramas, and to see other views like Boat Mesa and Claron Formation.

You can find Bryce Point along the Peek-a-Boo Loop trail .

Wall Street

Switchback in a hiking trail surrounded by rock walls

If you want to take advantage of the views of Bryce Canyon’s Wall Street, be sure to visit the park before Bryce Canyon is veiled by winter precipitation. The trail closes annually due to the ice and snow that covers the hike.

Wall Street is Bryce Canyon’s only slot canyon, and capturing a photo of the towering walls casting an orange glow on everything it touches is an opportunity you won’t want to pass up.

Wall Street is located on the Navajo Loop Trail . It was one of two choices for proceeding along the path, so when you reach a fork in the trail, head to the right.

Sunrise Point

Orange rock formations surrounded by trees

Sunrise Point lives up to the name for some excellent sunrise Bryce Canyon photography.

The sunrise illuminates the scenery like no other, but this point also doubles as a great sunset spot as well.

And if you’ve got a high-quality camera, this is one of the best photo spots in Bryce Canyon for night photography.

Sunrise Point marks the beginning of Queen’s Garden Trail and the end of the Navajo Loop Trail.

Besides the beautifully contradictory combination of the pines and hoodoos, Sunrise Point is a good spot to see views like The Sinking Ship as well.

Yovimpa Point

From the joint parking lot for Rainbow Point and Yovimpa Point, you can take a paved trail to Yovimpa Point to see the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument .

This is a staple for Bryce Canyon photography. Yovimpa Point provides an undefeatable view at 9000 feet, the highest view in the park, of the Staircase and the “steps” that led to the epithet.

The paved trail runs past a picnic area, so after you capture the stunning view of the Grand Staircase, you can stop here for some lunch or a snack.

Sunset Point

Unlike Sunrise Point, Sunset Point is not properly named and a little bit deceptive.

Don’t get me wrong, it still has awe-inspiring views, sunset is just not the best time to get them on camera.

📷 Early morning will allow you to capture these infamous hoodoos in all their glory.

The area is littered with hoodoos and was coined The Silent City.

Sunset can be found above the beginning of the Navajo Loop trail, and you’ll be able to see Thor’s Hammer from the overlook.

Queen’s Garden Trail

People walking on a trail surrounded by rocks

After taking a few pictures of the sunrise at Sunrise point, follow Queen’s Garden Trail 320 feet down into the canyon.

This hike concludes at just under a mile but provides the best opportunities for up-close shots of the hoodoos.

The forest of rock and pine envelops you for the short hike and allows for some of the best Bryce Canyon photography. This is your chance to be amidst the captivating views you’ve been capturing from afar.

Inspiration Point

Bright orange rock hoodoos in a bunch

To get the most bang for your buck, Inspiration Point should be your first stop.

Looking out over Inspiration Point gives you the broadest view of the park.

The Silent City is fortified by Boat Mesa, with layers and layers of hoodoos speckled with greenery.

📷 Each time of the day, Inspiration Point highlights different colors across the scenery, so if you have time, return to Inspiration Point to capture all the pinks, reds, oranges, and yellows you can imagine.

This is a great location for panoramic pictures, but there is a plethora of unique hoodoos that you might want to zoom in on, too.

Inspiration is located just a mile and a half from the visitor section; just look out for the sign to the parking lot.

Fairyland Point

As one of the lesser-known viewing points in the park, Fairyland Point is, first of all, absolutely beautiful and, second of all, generally free of too many other visitors.

It is the first viewpoint as you drive into the park and is often overlooked.

You can stop at the point and take pictures of the fortress-like hoodoos at Fairyland Point or venture down the trail to get some different angles.

📷 These hoodoos are best captured at sunrise. That adorning early morning glow brings these hoodoos to their fullest potential.

Mossy Cave Trail

Waterfall flowing into a pond

Mossy Cave Trail is one of my favorite photo ops at Bryce Canyon National Park.

It is another place that can be easy to miss as it is located just outside of the park’s entrance on Highway 12.

Mossy Cave Trail is just a bit of paradise amidst the rocky hoodoo towers. A snow melt stream cuts through the red rock, and you can even find a waterfall called Tropic Ditch if you continue on the trail.

📷 Mossy Cave Trail is a must for memorable photos of Bryce Canyon. Early morning to mid-morning is the best time to capture this beauty.

FAQs: Bryce Canyon Photography

Bryce Canyon is 268 miles from Salt Lake City, which takes about 4 hours to drive.

Hoodoos are tall, thin spires of rock that protrude from the bottom of arid basins and desert lands. Often compared to totem poles due to their appearance, hoodoos form as a result of differential erosion caused by weathering and freezing temperatures. The most common type is found in the American Southwest and include Bryce Canyon in Utah and the Badlands in South Dakota. Many unique shapes can be seen among them, such as towers, pinnacles, or columns – each a unique result of weathering forces acting on sedimentary rocks. Hoodoos have been around for centuries and continue to fascinate visitors who come to see these magnificent natural sculptures.

Bryce Canyon National Park is located in southern Utah, and it’s known for its unique rock formations called hoodoos . Hoodoos come in many shapes and sizes, ranging from a few feet to hundreds of feet tall.

Final Thoughts: Best Photo Spots in Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon photography will grant you some of the most unique and bewitching pictures of the diverse Utah landscape.

There is pretty much no bad time to go view the scenery with your own eyes, but unfortunately, that doesn’t always translate directly to our cameras, so now you are well equipped to bring those mental images right home with you.

Be prepared to tell everyone who sees these pictures your Bryce Canyon itinerary; they’re going to want to see it for themselves!

A Photo Tour of Bryce Canyon National Park

Take a visual tour through Bryce Canyon National Park to see the stunning landscapes you’ll see when you visit!

Tips to Photograph Bryce Canyon

This guide will focus on the viewpoints and overlooks along the Bryce Canyon scenic drive , as well as spots along the rim trail in The Amphitheater.

But first there are important things to know about photographing and visiting Bryce Canyon National Park.

Due to the elevation, it gets cold at night even when visiting Bryce Canyon National Park in the summer . The cold can drain camera batteries fast. Cover the camera when you are not using it or keep a spare set of batteries close to your body. Hand warmers and  warm clothing layers are important to help keep you warm.

Stay Hydrated

Always carry water with you. We carry  refillable water bottles  in our camera bags. Also eat plenty of healthy snacks and food .

Sunrise Reflected Light

Bryce Canyon sunrise photography is an amazing time to catch the glow and reflected light on the hoodoos. Keep in mind that as the sun rises higher in the sky, the landscape become washed out.

Watch for reflected light on the hoodoos, fins, windows and trees in the canyon. Be creative with composition by taking pictures through rock holes, tunnels, windows and between cliffs. Unusually shaped frames can add drama to the shot.

Afternoon and Sunset

Long shadows are cast into the canyon beginning late afternoon as the sun sets and light is only apparent on the tops of the hoodoos. Concentrate on any side-lighting of the hoodoos that aren’t in shadow.

If there are clouds in the sky, they may bounce light into the canyon to help reduce the shadows. Otherwise, the big vistas provide wonderful telephoto shots from any viewpoint in the amphitheater during sunset.

Bryce Canyon Photo Spots Map

Use this map of Bryce Canyon photo spots to navigate through the park to each location!

bryce canyon photography tours

Best Bryce Canyon Photo Spots

This guide will start at Rainbow Point, 18 miles beyond the entrance to the park. We’ll share photos and tips for the overlooks along the Bryce Canyon scenic drive .

As you drive from Rainbow Point back to the Amphitheater, all the Bryce Canyon views and photo spots will be on the right so you can avoid left turns on the busy road.

Rainbow & Yovimpa Points

The park road ends when it reaches the combined parking area for Rainbow Point and Yovimpa Point.

Rainbow Point: you can see the colorful hoodoos in Rainbow Canyon and views of theTable Cliff Plateau. There’s a short trail, Bristlecone Loop, that leads to an 1,800-year-old bristlecone pine, believed to be one of the oldest living things at Bryce Canyon.

Rainbow Point is a Bryce Canyon photo spot

Yovimpa Point: magnificent viewpoint looking south and west over the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It is one of the best spots to see the “steps” which give the Grand Staircase its name.

BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH: The light in the southern end of the park around Rainbow Point is wonderful from mid afternoon through sunset.

Agua Canyon

Agua Canyon is a fun photo spot at Bryce Canyon to see two prominent hoodoos at this overlook.

bryce canyon photography tours

Look for ‘The Hunter” and “The Rabbit”. The Hunter has a hat of evergreens and is easily seen just in front of the viewpoint. To the right is a smaller hoodoo commonly referred to as The Rabbit (the The Hunter’s prey).

BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH: The hoodoos and fins at Agua Canyon are especially dramatic in early morning light.

Natural Bridge

The structure called Natural Bridge is technically an arch. It started as a small ice window in a large prominent fin then eroded over time. Natural Bridge is a popular Bryce Canyon photo spot.

bryce canyon photography tours

You can photograph Natural Bridge from many vantage points, but follow the signs and stay behind the railing. Be sure to take one photo that frames the green Ponderosa pine trees through the arch.

BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH: Natural Bridge is best photographed mid-morning when the sun is high enough in the sky that it nicely illuminates the features around the arch and bounces ample light onto the underside.

Bryce Point

Bryce Point is named for Ebenezer Bryce, who settled the area in 1870. Due to its elevation at 8,300 feet, Bryce Point offers one of the most scenic vistas of the hoodoo-filled red rock amphitheater.

bryce canyon photography tours

Bryce Point is our favorite Bryce Canyon sunrise photography spot to catch the tops of the hoodoos glowing with a brilliant burst of light. You can photograph the sun crossing the horizon to the west as well as the hoodoos and Boat Mesa to the north.

BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH:  Photographing the sunrise  at Bryce Point provides an amazing view to capture the light sweeping across the amphitheater.

Bryce Canyon isn’t known for sunset photography. The hoodoos in the amphitheater area are in total shade as the sun sets.

But the Paria View is a good photo spot at sunset since the hoodoos here face the west and catch the golden light as the sun goes down.

bryce canyon photography tours

BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH: Our best  sunset photography tip : keep taking pictures after the sun sets. You can capture the glow of the hoodoos during the soft light of blue hour.

Inspiration Point

The view from Inspiration Point is spectacular to capture Bryce Canyon photos . The light creates glowing reds, oranges and pinks around the fins, spires and hoodoos.

bryce canyon photography tours

Panoramic view are everywhere, but don’t forget to zoom in an photograph smaller sections of the hoodoos to create an image with immediate impact.

bryce canyon photography tours

This is a good area to walk along the Rim Trail to find other views to photograph. Use caution when walking along the edges. The cliffs of Inspiration Point are exceptionally dangerous as they are formed of crumbly rock, slippery slopes and sheer drop-offs. All visitors are strongly cautioned to remain on trails and behind railings.

BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH: Inspiration Point is a good location to take photos of Bryce Canyon at sunrise and during the early morning.

Sunset Point

Sunset Point is actually not a good Bryce Canyon photo spot for sunset photography. At this viewpoint you’ll see the light on the hoodoos as the sun rises, creating stunning Bryce Canyon photos.

sunset point photo spot at bryce canyon

You’ll also see the Silent City here. It’s a maze of hoodoos and fins packed in close proximity directly below the point and to the south.

Just below the overlook you’ll see the Navajo Loop trail descending into the famous Wall Street. You’ll also see the iconic Thor’s Hammer.

BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH: Sunset Point is amazing at sunrise and early morning to capture the reflected light on the hoodoos.

Thor’s Hammer

Every Bryce Canyon Photography Guide will include Thor’s Hammer, one of the most well-known formations in the park. This famous hoodoo is one of the most spectacular Bryce Canyon photo spots. It can be found just below the Sunset Point overlook on the northern edge.

bryce canyon photography tours

Thor’s Hammer is isolated from other hoodoos and provides a striking contrast to the natural landscape. We recommend walking down the Navajo Loop Queen’s Garden trail far enough to get that up-close view and photo of Thor’s Hammer.

BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH: Sunrise and morning are amazing times to get that glow on Thor’s Hammer.

Navajo Loop Trail

The Bryce Canyon views overlooking the Amphitheater along the Rim Trail are spectacular. But getting close to the hoodoos and windows up close is something you should do if you can!

hikers on the Navajo Loop trail at Bryce Canyon

You don’t need to walk the entire trail, just far enough to see Thor’s Hammer and the windows just below Sunset Point.

Remember that going DOWN the trails to the bottom of the canyon is easy, but hiking back UP is tiring!

We recommend hiking the  Navajo Loop – Queen’s Garden trail , starting at Sunset Point and ending at Sunrise Point.

BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH: Sunrise and morning are good times to photograph the landscapes along the trail.

Sunrise Point

Sunrise Point is another good sunrise photo spot at Bryce Canyon. You’ll catch the early morning glow on the red rock hoodoos.

Just below this overlook, and down the Queen’s Garden Trail a bit, you’ll see unique landscapes to photograph.

Queen's Garden Trail below Sunrise Point at Bryce Canyon

We also recommend you walk along the Rim Trail near the viewpoint to get different views of the amphitheater and hoodoos.

BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH: Sunrise and morning are best from this viewpoint and along the Rim Trail.

Bryce Canyon Amphitheater in the Winter

Bryce Canyon in the winter is amazing to photograph the contrast of the red/orange hoodoos against the white snow.

Bryce Canyon in the winter hoodoos with snow

To capture amazing Bryce Canyon winter photos , be prepared for cold temperatures by wearing winter clothing for outdoor photography .

You could also encounter snow-covered walkways and the possibility of road closures beyond the amphitheater depending on weather and road conditions.

Know in advance what to expect when visiting Bryce Canyon in the winter !

Fairyland Point

Fairyland Point is a fabulous location to photograph the glow on the hoodoos in the morning light. Walk along the Fairyland Trail a bit to get various perspectives of the hoodoos here.

bryce canyon photography tours

BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH: Morning is a good time to visit Fairlyand Point. You’ll have good parking, and the hoodoos glow in morning light.

Mossy Cave Trail

The Mossy Cave trail is part of Bryce Canyon, but it’s outside the park’s entrance along Highway 12. It’s definitely a photo spot you’ll want to see!

The actual “mossy cave” is a cool alcove that’s sheltered where ice from the winter remains intact well into June.

Mossy Cave photo spot at Bryce Canyon

But the main attraction for photographers is the small waterfall along the stream that’s called the Tropic Ditch. You can hike right to the waterfall. If you’re visiting Bryce Canyon National Park in the summer this is a great place to cool of and let the kids play in the river.

Photography

Your camera is the first thing to include on your list when visiting bryce canyon country. in this day and age, it’s so easy to capture and share your pictures, and you’ll impress your friends around the world with what you are seeing and doing in bryce canyon country..

Where are some of the best places to shoot photographs? Here are a few suggestions:

Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon National Park is a photographer’s dream, with some of the most unique formations found anywhere in the world.

Sunset Point And Inspiration Point

Find great photo opportunities throughout the day as changing light and shadows play off the textures of rock. But for these locations, the best light is often found in the early morning and late evening.

The Navajo Loop Trail

This is a good location for midday shots inside the towering hoodoo formations.

Bryce Point And Sunrise Point

These are often best photographed as sunrise washes over Bryce Amphitheater adding vibrant morning light.

Yovimpa Point

Can be a great location for stunning sunset shots.

Boulder Mountain

Find alpine lakes, scenic vistas, and wildlife

Discover rock formations, scenic roads, and scenic overlooks.

Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument

Venture to Devil’s Garden, into the side slot canyons, or all the way to the end for the Hole In The Rock. This area offers some of the most remote wilderness in the US along with miles of back-country roads. Keep an eye out for wildlife and birds—you may even capture a shot of a golden eagle or a rare California condor. Shoot slot canyons when there is plenty of light overhead.

Kodachrome Basin State Park

This Utah state park has a well-deserved reputation as a photographer’s paradise. In 1948, after seeing the colorful formations gleaming beneath brilliant blue skies, photographers with the National Geographic Society nicknamed the area for Kodak’s new Kodachrome film. While you’re in this area, you can go a few more miles to capture nearby Grosvenor Arch, best shot in morning and evening light.

Photograph historic pioneer homes and downtown historic district facades.

Petrified Forest State Park

Shoot petrified trees and scenic overlooks

Red Canyon is just 12 miles west of Bryce Canyon National Park along Scenic Byway 12, and it offers similar red-rock scenery and hoodoos, while surrounded by the lush greenery of Dixie National Forest.

Scenic Byway 12

This road runs approximately 120 miles from near Panguitch and up past Boulder, Utah. Red Canyon and other attractions are found along the way, but you’ll appreciate the many overlooks that offer grand scenic vistas.

Notes & Tips

Carry spare batteries and extra memory disks, as it isn’t uncommon to shoot more shots than you anticipated. If you don’t have a tripod, then rest your camera on your car, a fence post, tree branch, or something steady to ensure that your shots are crisp and clean. Take time to frame your shots and remember to focus on the smaller details of nature as well as the big picture.

Bryce Canyon Tour

You’ll Enjoy the Bryce Canyon Tour

This is a land that abounds in mysterious and remarkable formations of rich, red rock. In addition, Zion’s dramatic sheer marbled cliffs are an unforgettable sight to behold. As a result,  Bryce Canyon is an extraordinary sight. Hence, the Bryce Canyon Tour is special highlight in the traveler’s journey. The views are truly breathtaking. We’ll surround you with the pinnacles and extraordinary formations continue throughout the journey. You’ll love this tour!

Then We’re Off to Zion

After a stunning visit we reluctantly leave Bryce for the wonders of Zion. Artists and photographers have been drawn to Zion for many years in an effort to capture its infinite variety of moods. The incredible landscape of Zion is a magnificent display of beauty. It is a perpetual source of inspiration and renewal for all. Once you experience Zion, you will long to return again and again.

A Presidential Experience

President Taft named the Zion area Mukuntuweap National Monument in order to preserve this special place. In 1918, the National Park Service enlarged the area. A year later the name was changed to Zion National Park as it is known today. A biblical term often used by the Mormons to describe a place of God or being righteous and pure of heart. Once you see it for yourself, you’ll know why.

Unlivable Beauty

Mormons settled the Zion area in the early 1860s. You’ll see why travel to these areas in these early days was extremely rare due to their remote location and complete absence of roads. The first road into Zion Canyon was built in 1917. Then Zion Mount Carmel Highway opened in 1930. The Bryce Canyon area was settled by Mormons in the early 1870s to graze cattle. The area was named after Ebenezer Bryce. The Mormon church sent Ebenezer Bryce to settle the land because of his carpentry skills. The Bryce family settled right below what is now known as Bryce Amphitheater.

Other settlers soon started to call this unusual place “Bryce’s canyon”. Later, the name was formalized. But you can see how a combination of drought, overgrazing and flooding eventually drove the remaining Paiutes and the Mormons from the area in the late 1870’s. These types of conditions are likely what also forced the Ancient Anasazi from the area hundreds of years before. The Bryce Canyon Tour is your gateway to this historic experience.

Spiraling Hoodoos

Bryce Canyon National Park is located in southwestern Utah about 50 miles northeast of Zion National Park. Covering under 60 square miles, the park is relatively small. Yet Bryce canyon amazes well over 2 million visitors per year! Bryce Canyon, despite its name, is not a canyon at all. As it was not carved from river erosion as Zion or the Grand Canyon was. Instead erosion at the head water of the river has excavated large amphitheaters into the ancient sedimentary rock. As a result, Bryce is distinctive due to bizarre geological structures. And they’re called hoodoos that are up to 200 feet tall.

Natural Amphitheaters

Formed by weathering and erosion of ancient lake beds, a series of amphitheaters extends more than 20 miles within the park. And we’ll show you the largest amphitheater, the magnificent Bryce Amphitheater. Which is 12 miles long, 3 miles wide, 800 feet deep and features layers of red, orange, and cream rock formations. You’ll see that they provide truly stunning vistas. And everyone will love the memories you find here!

See for yourself how wind, water and time have eroded Bryce Canyon National Park’s sandstone cliffs into otherworldly characters plucked from the unconscious of a mad Viking.

You’ll walk along Bryce Canyon’s Dakota Sandstone and Tropic Shale. They deposited in the warm, shallow waters of prehistoric seas while the park’s intricate hoodoos were carved from sediment formed in cool, ancient streams and lakes. Bryce Canyon has one of the highest concentrations of hoodoos of any place on Earth. We’ll guide you to many other formations as well. You’ll experience monoliths, arches, bridges, walls and windows throughout the park. Countless other features have been completely eroded away. And you can imagine them lost to the sands of time in this ever changing landscape. The structures exposed in the park are part of the Grand Staircase. The oldest parts are exposed in the Grand Canyon, the intermediate in Zion National Park, and the youngest parts are in the Bryce Canyon

This Stunning National Park Is Packed With Adventures for All Ages

Z ion often gets the spotlight when it comes to national parks in Utah. But if your visit to this stunning state doesn’t include some time in Bryce Canyon, you are seriously missing out. Bryce Canyon National Park and the surrounding area will leave you looking out over the landscape saying, “How is this even real?”

But very real are all of those red rock spire behemoths growing up to the sky, a.k.a hoodoos. These, along with many of the other incredible things to explore in Bryce Canyon, are the result of Mother Nature working for millions of years to carve out.

And we specifically have water to thank for creating the rugged landscape that Bryce Canyon lays before you. The combination of erosion and rainwater has resulted in the mudstone that blasts your eyes with its rich color being transformed into slot canyons, hoodoos, and countless otherworldly-arranged rocks, thus creating some of the most stunning hikes and views you’ve ever seen.

Rancher Ebenezer Bryce was certainly correct in saying that about this area: “It’s a hell of a place to lose a cow.”

Bryce Canyon Country accounts for far more than Bryce Canyon National Park – it also includes Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and Capitol Reef National Park, too.

The physical mazes, winding trails, and adventures aplenty in the Bryce Canyon area take you through some of the greatest wonders on our planet to get an up-close-and-personal experience that will leave you appreciating nature on a whole new level.

Best Things to Do in Bryce Canyon

Canyoneering in Escalante: To go beyond just looking at the marvels of Bryce Canyon to where you can fully immerse yourself in them, don’t miss a canyoneering experience with Excursions of Escalante . This company’s permit allows them to take guests to the top off-trail canyoneering in the area.

Owner and guide Rick Green knows these canyons like the back of his hand, and he and his fellow guides provide you with a once-in-a-lifetime experience that goes beyond just the views and into an adventure that will have your heart racing and your inner adrenaline junkie asking for more.

These tours can be modified to suit all ages, and no experience is necessary. All equipment is provided – all you need to bring is an open mind, a sense of adventure, and a good pair of hiking boots you won’t mind getting wet and dirty.

Horseback Riding in Bryce Canyon National Park: It’s one thing to see the sights of Bryce Canyon National Park on foot, and it’s another to see them from atop a horse. While we don’t think anyone should skip out on exploring via hikes, seeing this area by horse is unparalleled.

Canyon Trail Rides takes visitors on a two or three-hour journey through the extreme altitudes of Bryce Canyon and all that they have to offer – from the iconic towering hoodoos to the alpine meadows and coniferous forests.

A tour with these guys is like taking a trip back in time to see how these rock formations came to be and, in doing so, also gives you a taste of how some of this area was explored – via horseback.

With photo ops at every turn, this adventure is not to be missed. Plus, it’s a trail that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to experience, as it is limited to seeing on horseback.

ATVing in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument: Speed things up a bit by exploring the area of Grand Staircase from inside an ATV. This unique mode of transportation allows you to gain access to places that are off the beaten path so that you can appreciate this stunning landscape away from the crowds.

A tour with Grand Staircase ATV gives you the chance to sit back, relax, and enjoy the views as a guide drives you to some of the best views the eye can see. You’ll also enjoy learning some history along the way, as the past of this place is rich with stories of trials, tribulations, and triumphs.

This tour is family-friendly and safe for all ages.

Hiking the Navajo Loop Trail: It would be a sin to go to Bryce Canyon without embarking on at least one hike. And if one hike is all that your schedule allows for, you should make it the Navajo Loop Trail.

This one takes you from the canyon rim down to the valley floor in a short 1.3 miles but be warned that this is considered a moderately difficult hike. (Mostly because you get to hike down first, and then you have to turn around and hike your way back up.)

Account for around 2 hours to do the hike and stop to take picture after picture along the way as you feel as if every view you come upon is more beautiful than the previous. One view you’re sure to love is Bryce Canyon National Park’s most famous hoodoo – Thor’s Hammer.

Best Places to Eat

You don’t go to Bryce Canyon for a luxury dining experience – you go here for great local grub that feeds your heart and fuels your adventures.

For dinner and a show that will have you belting your favorite country classics, don’t miss Ebenezer’s Bar and Grill . Local band The Bryce Canyon Wranglers teams up with traveling entertainers from around the world to bring you quite the show, with a tasty BBQ dinner to boot.

Continuing the BBQ tour of Bryce Canyon, add to your list of stops i.d.k. Barbeque for convenient, casual, and classic BBQ eats. You can even get tasty meat by the pound to take along with you on a hike for some delicious sandwiches on the go.

If you’re in the mood for a drink and a solid burger, don’t miss Highway 12’s only bar, 4th West Pub . From loaded fries topped with sirloin steak to a pastrami burger and every burger in between, this eatery also offers fun events like trivia night, art night, and live music.

Best Places to Stay

For a glamping experience that sets the glamping bar unfathomably high, book a stay at Under Canvas Bryce Canyon .

You’ll forget that you’re camping when you step into your Deluxe Tent featuring a plush king-sized bed and luxury linens, a private bathroom with a shower (yes, it has hot water!), organic bath products, a sink, a flushing toilet, a wood-burning stove (don’t worry – the staff is on-call to help you start it), and a private deck with lounge chairs.

And that’s not it. Under Canvas Bryce Canyon’s lobby and common area have amenities to enhance the experience even further. The nightly fires and complimentary s’mores are a highlight, especially when accompanied by a clear night sky where the minimal light pollution means you can see stars for miles and miles.

Be sure to also take advantage of the live music and yoga classes on-site (these views while in upward-facing dog? Sign us up!), as well as the kid's activities if you’ve got young ones in tow.

The on-site dining definitely deserves praise, too, as it is delicious. Full breakfast and dinner are available here and feature seasonal and thoughtfully sourced produce that comes together to create dishes that will have your taste buds dancing with joy.

And what better place to enjoy these tasty eats than the property’s beautiful outdoor area that allows you to connect with nature as you soak up the high-alpine and juniper forest views?

In short, your Bryce Canyon experience isn’t complete without a stay at the area’s Under Canvas.

For a more casual stay that features a great complimentary breakfast, turn to Canyon Country Lodge . Tucked between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef national parks, enjoy a comfy bed and a quiet night’s sleep. Enjoy the amenities here that include a swimming pool, a hot tub, a fitness center, and laundry after those dusty days of adventuring in Bryce Canyon.

How to Get There

Getting to Bryce Canyon National Park from out of state can be a bit of a trek, but well worth it. The closest major international airport is Salt Lake City International Airport, and from there, it’s a 4-5 hour drive to Bryce Canyon.

If you’re up for that journey but feel the drive is a bit daunting, we highly recommend hiring Southwest Adventure Tours for transportation. That way, you can relax and enjoy the views without the stress of traffic and unfamiliar roads.

Southwest Adventure Tours does far more than get you from SLC to Bryce Canyon – they offer a variety of tours led by fabulous local guides that will get you into the fan favorites as well as the hidden gems of Bryce Canyon Country.

Let someone else deal with the hassle of getting from place to place so that you can conserve your energy for soaking up all of the incredible beauty and endless adventures that Bryce Canyon Country offers.
