With your Mac, however, you can easily export a webpage as a PDF using Safari and save it to your documents. Here’s how to do it.

1. Save a Webpage Exactly How It Looks on Safari

If you want to quickly convert a Safari webpage into a PDF on your Mac, without the need to customize it, do the following:

• While on Safari , go to the menu bar and click File .
• Scroll down to Export as PDF .
• In the popup window, rename the file and choose the save location.

Remember that saving a webpage in this manner will give you an exact PDF version of the webpage, which includes all the menu bars, buttons, ads, and reading suggestions. Though, some of the formatting may change slightly in the PDF to how it appears on your screen.

2. Save a Webpage Without the Distractions

If you find all the ads and buttons unappealing and distracting, you can create a clean PDF copy of the webpage with all the clutter. To do this:

• From Safari , click View > Show Reader .
• Then repeat the above process: Go to File > Export as PDF > Save .

This is different from saving webpages as PDFs which is another handy feature of Safari. Let’s check it out.

Make Safari Download PDF Files Instead of Opening Them

If you want to save PDF from Safari to the Files app on your iPhone, it’s pretty simple. When browsing on Safari on iPhone, if you tap the link to a downloadable file, a dialog box will appear to confirm that you would like to download the file.

Once you tap “Download,” the file will be added to the downloads manager and start downloading. It will continue downloading until the entire file is downloaded, even if you close Safari or leave the webpage.

By default, downloaded files are saved to a ‘Downloads’ folders in iCloud Drive so that you can access them from all your devices. But you can change the default location that files are saved in if you wish.

When you click on a link to a PDF file in Safari on Mac, it will automatically open it. To save the PDF file that you’re viewing, click on the “File” menu at the top of the screen and choose “Save As.”

In the dialog box that opens, name the PDF file and select the destination where you want to keep the PDF file. Then, click “Save.”

That’s it. Once the file is downloaded, you can view it anytime by opening it from the location where you chose to save it.

How to Download PDF Files from a Link in Safari on Mac

If you want to download a linked PDF file in Safari to the Mac, that works the same as downloading any other linked item in Safari on the Mac:

Right-click on the PDF file link and choose “Download Linked File As”. Then, name the PDF file and save the file to the preferred destination folder.

A neat download trick for Safari is to  hold down the OPTION key and then click the link to the PDF or refresh the current page if the PDF is already open in Safari.

That will also download the PDF document directly into the preset Downloads folder.

Usually, you will probably end up opening PDF files on Safari when trying to download them. If you want to avoid this and directly save a PDF from Safari on Mac, you can try the following tricks:

• If it’s a link that is clickable to open the PDF, you can just hold the OPTION/ALT key when clicking the URL to instantly download the PDF to the default download location. This will instantly download the PDF file to your Downloads folder unless you changed the download destination in Safari
• Another option to download a PDF instead of opening it within Safari is to load the PDF within a tab and then click the URL bar. Hold down the OPTION/ALT key and hit Return (or refresh the PDF on display) to download the PDF

There are many reasons you might want to do this, perhaps you’re wishing to save a webpage receipt as a PDF for record keeping, to archive a page, or to access a web page offline. Fortunately, Safari makes it easy to convert webpages into PDF files.

The ability to create PDF from webpages in Safari was first introduced with the release of iOS 11. However, the steps needed to access the same has been slightly tweaked if you’re running a newer version of iOS like iOS 15, iOS 14, and iOS 13. The advantage of having PDF files of webpages is that they can be viewed even when you’re not connected to the internet and they can also be easily printed out. Plus, you can share it with your colleagues along with other files. So let’s check out creating a PDF from a webpage by using Safari on iPhone or iPad.

How to Save Webpage as PDF with Safari on iPhone & iPad

The following steps are applicable if your iPhone or iPad is running iOS 13/iPadOS 13 or later. On the other hand, if your device is running an older software version, you can follow this method instead .

That’s all you needed to do. You’ve successfully saved the current webpage as a PDF file on your iOS/iPadOS device.

The “Save to Files” option will only show up in the share sheet if you’ve selected the PDF format from the Options menu. This setting will be reset once you exit the share sheet. So, if you’re looking to save multiple webpages, you’ll need to repeat the above steps for each one of them.

If you’ve saved the PDF file in an iCloud Drive directory, it’s worth pointing out that the file will be accessible from all your other Apple devices as well, provided you’re signed into them with the same Apple account.

The saved webpage can then be shared as a file from the Files app instead of a webpage, which can then be viewed even offline by the recipient. The PDF file will follow the format of “Safari – (Date of Creation) – (Time of Creation).pdf”, but you can easily rename it according to your preference within the Files app .

Keep in mind that if the webpage had ads or other page styling, the downloaded PDF files will also show those ads or page styling. However, if you don’t want that kind of stuff in your saved PDF, you can switch to reader view in Safari and then follow the same steps to save it without any ads, page clutter, or styling elements.

This technique does not work with all webpages. Some webpages do not allow saving or printing.

Whilst this works, 1) It only includes a single page. 2) Margins are blotting out key page content.

I am on Android for the past 4 years but if memory serves me correct you can: expert > print > ping OUT on the print preview > export there > do whatever you want.

Hey, this is really useful! Thanks! I have previously used the method of printing to PDF, then reverse pinch, tap the share box on that one & save. Which works about as well (maybe in all apps that can print), but so very not-obvious.

• In any web browser on your computer, press "Ctrl + P" (PC) or "Cmd + P" (Mac) to open the Print dialog.
• Instead of selecting a printer, select "Save as PDF" or "Microsoft Print to PDF."

You'll probably eventually come across a webpage that you'd like to save for later, and if you save a webpage as a PDF it will stay the same as it is today when you access it again. As a result, converting a webpage to PDF format is an excellent way to record web data as it is for our records, research, and other applications. Here's how to go about it.

There are two ways to create a PDF using Safari on the iPhone and iPad. The first method uses the screenshot tool:

Step 1: Open a webpage in Safari and grab a screenshot. This method depends on your device.

Step 2: On the following screen, select the Full page tab and perform any markups you want to include. Select Done when you’re finished.

Step 3: Choose Save PDF to files on the resulting pop-up.

Step 4: Choose a destination on your device and select Save to complete.

The second method uses the Share tool:

Step 1: Open the webpage in Safari and select the Share button.

Step 2: On the drop-down (iPad) or pop-up (iPhone) Share Sheet, select Options listed under the webpage title.

Step 3: Choose PDF on the following list and then select Back (iPad) or Done (iPhone).

Step 4: On the Share Sheet, select Save to files .

Follow these steps to save a webpage to PDF using Chrome for Android :

Step 1: Open your desired webpage in the Chrome app, select the Three-dot icon located in the top-right corner, and choose Share in the drop-down menu.

Step 2: A pop-up menu appears on the bottom of the screen. From this menu, select Print .

Step 3: Select the Down arrow at the top of the screen and choose the Save as PDF option on the drop-down menu.

Step 4: Select the Down arrow underneath Paper size and choose your document options (size, color, pages) if necessary.

Step 5: Once you’re ready to save your PDF, select the circle PDF icon on the right side of the screen.

Step 6: Give your file a name by navigating to the bottom of the following screen, entering the name in the text box, and then selecting Save .

You also have the opportunity to choose your save location simply by pressing the Three horizontal lines (you’ll see these on the top left of your screen). You can select from a variety of options, including the Downloads folder, somewhere else in your device’s storage, or in your Google Drive.

You’re also able to save PDFs directly from Chrome if you’re using an iOS device; however, the instructions are slightly different.

Step 1: Select the Share icon (you can find this in the top-right corner of your screen) and scroll down a bit until you see the Print option. Select it.

Step 2: From the Print menu, use both of your fingers to make a pinching motion that will allow you to zoom in and get a closer view. Doing this will cause the page to automatically transform into a full-screen PDF that you can examine.

Step 3: On the top-right of the screen, select the Share icon again, then pick Save to files . You can then enter the name you want to call your file, and that’s it – now you have a PDF of your webpage. Keep in mind that you can also implement this process on Firefox for iOS.

In your work or personal life, you'll sometimes need to download a file on your iPhone or iPad. Using the new feature introduced in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, you can now do this directly in Safari. No third-party app needed!

Safari's download manager is a hidden new feature in the  iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 updates. If you're going about your day, browsing the web, you probably won't be aware of the feature. Instead, it comes up when you tap on a download link.

Go to a web page and find the link for a file you want to download. When you select it, you'll see a popup with the filename asking if you want to download it. Tap on the "Download" button.

Thankfully, you can change the default location to local storage. Open the "Settings" app and go to Safari > Downloads. If you can't find the browser on your phone, try using Apple's Spotlight search to locate it.

Here, switch the selection to "On My iPhone" or "On My iPad" depending on your device.

By default, Safari will pick the "Downloads" folder. You can change this by tapping on the "Other" option to select any folder from the local storage (or from a cloud storage option).

The new download manager in Safari is exclusive to iOS 13, iPadOS 13, and above. If you haven't updated to the latest OS (which you should), or if you're in a situation where you can't update, here's a workaround for you.

Try using the free Documents 5 app by Readdle . It's an all-in-one browser and file manager app.

Open the Documents 5 app and tap on the "Browser" button in the bottom-right corner to switch to the browser mode.

Now, navigate to the page with the download link and tap on it. From the next screen, select the folder where you want to download the file and tap on "Done."

How to disable Safari's in-browser pdf viewer and, instead, force download of selected pdf links in macOS Sierra 10.12.3

1. If you have Adobe Reader installed, disable Adobe's pdf viewer browser plug-ins:

a. Open Adobe Reader/Acrobat Pro; go to Preferences -> Internet; under Web Browser Options, uncheck all boxes; confirm preference changes by selecting "OK."

b. Open Safari; go to Preferences -> Security -> Plug-in Settings; in the left column, uncheck boxes next to any Adobe "PDFViewer..." plug-ins.

c. Quit both Adobe and Safari.

d. Open Finder; go to Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins; in that Internet Plug-Ins folder, you should find a few Adobe plug-ins as well as a folder named "Disabled Plug-Ins" (if you do not yet have a Disabled Plug-Ins folder, create one); move both "AdobePDFViewer.plugin" and "AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin" to Disabled Plug-Ins (requires administrator authentication).

2. Use command line to create a defaults plist entry disabling WebKit in-line pdf viewing:

a. Open Terminal (located in your Applications/Utilities folder); copy-and-paste the following text to Terminal

defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool YES

b. Hit Return to execute the command.

Note: There is no (automatic) confirmation/response after successful entry of the above command. If, however, you wish to check whether the command worked, you may enter the following:

defaults read com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport

If the entry was successfully made, the system will return "1" on the next line (corresponding to the newly-written "YES" boolean key).

3. Restart your computer.

Comment: I also removed the Adobe Application Manager internet plug-in (AdobeAAMDetect.plugin) as part of Steps 1.b and 1.d, above. I am unsure whether leaving the AAM plug-in might affect the outcome.

The foregoing worked for me, running macOS 10.12.3 and Safari 10.0.3.

Thank you. I guess there is no longer anyway to have it automatically download. I was hoping for just a one click solution (the right click involves a second task of selecting a download option). It's not a big deal but it has slowed my workflow down somewhat. Thank you.

Thank you for replying. Yes, I can do that or let it load and then click on the download symbol that appears when you hover near the bottom of the page but what I am trying to do is to have the link download rather than display. I had it set up that way for years on the laptop but I do not remember how I did it. It saves a step as I gather a lot of research to read for later and I am slowed down by having to process each file individually. Thank you.

From the View menu, Show Status Bar.

Then, you can right-click on a link offering a PDF, and there will be two download option on the pop-up menu. I always hover over that PDF link, and then review the link in the status bar to ensure that it really is a PDF — before I download it. You can download the PDF as it is named via the Download Linked File menu item, and it will go to your designated download folder, or select the Download Linked File As... to open a Save panel.

Simple, clean. Unique and intriguing bot presets that cover more than you can think of and so many you didn’t know you needed Ai is a baby right now and this is a very enjoyable, productive, entertaining, and expansive playground to explore this new tech while contributing to the machine learning process Extra points for the clear and consistent (without being tedious) reminders that’s this is a new tool and is in no way an adequate substitute for an expert/professional human (which some people are in urgent need of 🤖) Not sure what sparked this, but thanks for apparently inspiring me enough to not only rave on and on here, but to also open a new app more than twice 🤘🏼

Don’t misunderstand, I DO love this app

I gave it a 4 because theres more to be done. However, Im a teacher and I loooove this app! But what kinda throws me for a loop is that sometimes it reminds me its just an ai assistant and cant do this or that. But if I ask the question again the next day, it works. And sometimes it gives false information. It solved a math problem wrong and when i replied to the chat and said thats incorrect, it apologized to me and gave me the correct answer. Another situation was when i asked it to create a rubric for me, sometimes it creates the rubric and will draw the boxes and everything, and sometimes it doesnt. But if i keep asking it to create the rubric, over and over, eventually it will make all the boxes. After three tries it typically does. But this uses up my queries. Im a paid member so i have a lot but still. So, the ai bot will mess u up and sometimes you may need to go fact check the stuff or repeat stuff all in all…that does kinda defeat the purpose of using it. But I believe in the functionality still. I have hope that these are glitches that will be worked out because it is indeed technology and not 100 percent. There’s probably a lot of kinks that have to constantly be addressed, so its a work in progress. It has helped me as a teacher tremendously! I have more good experiences than bad ones. I would love to be able to use it as a side bar on my phone and tablet the way I can on my PC. That would be awesomeness!

Version 2.0 = ABSOLUTELY AWFUL!!!!

Horrrrrible update and I will am canceling my subscription because of it. Bad business move! This app is no longer anything like it was before; All of the helpful bots have been removed, the app now shuts down randomly, freezes, even if close the app and reopen it, it is still frozen. You can’t copy the text without it freezing, deleting it and download it again down help. Asking my cat my questions would be more fruitful than attempting to use this garbage app. What an extremely disappointment update. Don’t bother, this app used to be better than other AI apps, now it is completely useless.
