Cruise Outfits for Women

Having trouble figuring out what exactly to wear on a cruise? You’ve come to the right place. In this post, I’ll share cruise outfits for women that I’ve worn on my past cruises as a Millennial cruiser, and give you inspiration on your cruise wardrobe.

In the past few years, I’ve been on 8+ cruises, and each time I’ve perfected all the outfits you’d need to pack for your cruise.

Cruise Outfits

I’ve been on all kinds of itineraries from shorter Caribbean cruises to long Mediterranean cruises, and from my experience, the cruise outfits generally stay the same.

You’ll need to consider what you’ll wear on the ship during the day, what you’ll wear on port days, and evening attire- which I’ll cover in this post.

So whether this is your first cruise or if you are a seasoned cruiser, I hope you find some new inspiration for your upcoming cruise with these new cruise outfits.

Read More: – For a more comprehensive list of what to pack for a cruise, read my ultimate cruise packing list that covers everything you’d need to bring (plus things you wouldn’t even think about but make a HUGE difference)

Daytime Cruise Outfits

Embarkation day cruise outfits.

Cruise Outfits

The first day of your cruise is exciting! You’re getting accustomed to your new home at sea with lots of exploring and finding a delicious cocktail.

Now before the fun of exploring, keep in mind you’ll be doing a lot of waiting around to get on the ship, plus going through security, and perhaps waiting for your room to be ready.

For embarkation day I would plan on wearing a casual outfit with lighter materials with layers- or even your airplane outfit . Something lightweight, yet appropriate to wear wandering around the ship.

I wouldn’t worry too much about what to wear on Embarkation day, but having a swimsuit ready to go is a great idea.

Pro Tip: Wear a swimsuit underneath your clothing with a stylish coverup and take advantage of the resort deck pool while everyone gets settled or hits up the buffet. It will feel like you’ve added an extra day on to your cruise!

What to wear on a Cruise Sea Day

Cruise Outfits

Stick to casual clothing during the day on a cruise. A typical sea day on a cruise begins with breakfast, you can wear casual items like t-shirts, jean shorts, etc.

I like to wear cute sets, or shorts and a cute top that’s easy to throw on when heading to the breakfast buffet. This is the least formal part of your cruise, but I would avoid walking around in your pajamas .

what to wear on a cruise

After that, you’ll probably walk around the ship or head to the resort deck which you’ll need to bring a bathing suit and beach coverup .

I always like to bring a larger tote bag so I can stick in all my essentials that I would need for a full pool day like sunscreen, a book, a water bottle, and extra clothes if I decide to swim.

Just think about wearing classic resort casual wear for the daytime.

Not sure what resort casual wear is? I have a full post that explains it. Read What is resort casual wear & how to wear it .

Now in the early evening after lounging on the resort deck, I like to wear a nice sundress or something a little dressy to have a sunset cocktail in. Thankfully for us ladies, I can usually wear the same dress to dinner without a problem.

What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise Excursion

Cruise Outifs

I find a lot of Caribbean shore excursions involve lots of water activities like swimming & snorkeling, or boat excursions.

For a Caribbean cruise excursion, I would wear a swimsuit plus a coverup , and additional dry clothes if you want to change into something more comfortable after your day in the water, especially for warm destinations.

If you are not headed on a water excursion, wear casual clothing like sundresses , shirts, and shorts in light breathable materials like linen, cotton, or jersey.

Plus a comfortable pair of shoes you can easily walk around in for different terrain.

I took a cooking class in St. Kitts on a cruise excursion. I wore a casual top and shorts and everyone else wore something similar. Keep in mind that Caribbean islands are hot and humid.

What to Wear on a Mediterranean Cruise Excursion

Here are some Cruise outfit ideas I wore on my Mediterranean cruise excursions in Italy, Greece, Croatia, and Montenegro.

Cruise Outfits Excursion

If you are going on a Mediterranean cruise, your ports of call and excursions tend to be a bit different than a Caribbean Cruise.

Instead of mostly swim & snorkel excursions you’d find on a Caribbean cruise, Mediterranean cruises have more city sightseeing excursions that involve a lot of walking , touring, and being in a city center.

For example, if you stop in Naples Itay, you could explore the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Naples, and even Pompei which all involve different kinds of daytime outfits.

I like to wear lightweight breathable dresses and comfortable walking shoes with a larger day bag to keep all my essentials inside.

birkenstock arizona big buckle sandal

Surprisingly my Birkenstock Arizona sandals were my go-to shoe on all my excursions. I even climbed a mountain in Kotor Montenegro in them and they were still comfortable afterward.

Evening Cruise Outfits

evening cruise outfits

To be honest, I think that the ladies have an easier time with evening cruise outfits because mostly anything goes as long as it’s dressy. Darker-colored sundresses , cocktail dresses , or even pants with a dressy top will work.

Men on the other hand have more rules like long pants and collared shirts.

Like I previously mentioned, after lounging at the pool deck, I like to get dressed up in a nice sundress to have a sunset cocktail before dinner. I usually head straight to dinner in the same dress and never had any problems.

Casual Dinner Outfits

I find that a lot more cruises are ditching formal dinners and instead have an “evening chic” dress code which can mean dressing elegant and sophisticated in your way.

Here are some examples of “casual” dinner cruise outfits. Keep in mind that I like to dress up no matter what the dress code is.

Cruise Outfits Evening

Here is a great example of a casual dinner outfit that doesn’t involve a dress. A pair of nice dark pants and a dressy top and flats will do the job for casual nights.

Formal Dinner Outfits

Here are some examples of formal dinner cruise outfits for the main dining room I’ve worn on recent cruises:

formal cruise outfits

Some cruise lines have “ formal ” nights, but even in recent years the strictness of the dress code has become more lax . Formal dress codes for ladies include cocktail dresses, elegant skirts, and evening-wear blouses.

But if you still want to wear a formal evening gown, it’s welcome. It’s a great excuse to dress up a little.

Double-check which cruise line you are cruising with to see the exact evening dress code.

What to wear on a cruise

No matter if you are going on a Caribbean Cruise or a Mediterranean cruise, here are things you should pack for your next cruise.

Pack sundresses to wear during the day, early evening, and perhaps dinner. These can be flowy maxi dresses or shorter styles. My favorite Amazon Maxi dress looks more expensive than it is and works great on a cruise.

Bonus tip: find dresses in non-wrinkle materials such as jersey material so you won’t have to worry about trying to get the wrinkles out.

Swimwear & Cover-ups:

what to wear on a cruise

You will be living in a swimsuit & coverup on your cruise, so be sure you bring your favorites. I love this one piece from Amazon . It’s flattering on any body type, comes in multiple colors, and looks expensive.

This beach coverup from Amazon is also one of my favorites. It’s in a nice cotton gauze-like material and looks so sophisticated.

Lightweight Jacket / Scarf

No matter when or where your cruise is, a lightweight jacket is a good idea for added warmth on cooler nights or heavy inside air conditioning. This could be a denim jacket, a lightweight sweater, or shall.

I’d recommend going for an extra-large scarf or sweater that still can be worn over your shoulders during the evening. It’s not too casual and looks dressy, while still keeping you warm.

Dark Pants / Jeans:

Be sure to bring a dark pair of pants or jeans if you don’t want to wear dresses to dinner. Dark pant goes with any dressy top, and it’s a basic you can wear more than once on your cruise.

Evening Dress

A nice evening dress is essential for any cruise. I find that a little black dress is a perfect item to bring because it’s dressy and easy to pack.

Some of my favorite evening dresses from Amazon .

cheap cruise wear

A pair of sandals that you can easily slip on and off are a must. Ideally, bring a pair that you don’t mind getting wet – especially if you plan on going to the resort pool deck or any water excursion.

You can bring heels, but keep in mind that you’ll be doing plenty of walking on cruise ships, and most of the time they are carpeted. If your heels are uncomfortable on land, they will be uncomfortable at sea.

A great compromise is a shorter kitten heel, a wedge, or a dressy flat.

A pair of white sneakers go with everything and are comfortable to put on after wearing sandals for so many days. These are great to have for strenuous activities, adventurous excursions, and exploring ports of call.

Sun Hat & Pair of Sunglasses

Don’t forget your accessories like a sun hat and a pair of sunglasses. To avoid your hat getting blown away by the wind, find one with a chin strap.

canvas tote bag

You’d be surprised at how many things you need to bring with you when you leave your cruise cabin.

I love bringing a stylish tote bag to throw all my essentials for the day inside like sunscreen, book, phone or tablet, an extra change of clothes, towel, etc.

I recommend this stylish tote from Amazon that I wore on my recent cruise. Or I love a sturdy canvas tote that goes with any outfit.

Mens Cruise Outfits

I can’t leave the men hanging, so here are some men’s cruise outfit ideas:

Men’s Day Outfits

During the day, men can wear casual clothing like swim trunks and a neutral shirt that is acceptable for the breakfast buffet and the resort deck.

Men’s Evening Cruise Outfits

Cruise Outfits Men

Now unfortunately for the men, the evening cruise line dress code applies mostly to men.

Cruises suggest men wear in general long pants or nice jeans, a collared dress shirt, and dress shoes.

For Formal Nights : Men should wear dress slacks, a collared shirt, and a sports coat. A tux or suit is optional, but double-check the specifics from your cruise line.

Cruise Outfits FAQ:

How many outfits to pack per day on a cruise.

I would pack two outfits per day on a cruise- something to wear during the day either on board or at a port of call, and something a bit dressier for the evening. Now you can wear a swimsuit & coverup more than once on your vacation, so keep that in mind when you’re packing.

Do you dress up for dinner on a cruise?

Generally yes, you do dress up for dinner on a cruise. However, a lot of cruises are dropping the mandatory “formal” night where you had to dress to the nines in black tie attire. Instead, you’ll find smart casual, or evening chic dress codes in place for dinner.

Cruise OUtfits for Ladies

What are the best clothes to wear on a cruise?

You’ll want to wear something comfortable and casual during the day. Don’t forget your swimsuit for excursions or lounging at the resort deck. And add something a bit dressy for the evening.

What NOT to wear on a cruise?

Now there are a few things not to wear on a cruise that pertain mostly to the evening. Flip flops, swimsuits tank tops, and shorts are generally not allowed inside restaurants during dinner.

Another thing to keep in mind is your footwear. Cruise ships are huge and you’ll be doing a surprising amount of walking (especially if your cabin is on the opposite of the buffet) Don’t wear shoes you can’t walk in like super high heels , etc.

Let’s Sum it up on Cruise Outfits

I hope you found this post helpful for packing for your next cruise vacation. To sum it up here are things you need to think about when packing for cruise outfits.

  • During the day you’ll want to bring something to wear around the cruise ship. Think comfortable and casual.
  • Bring a swimsuit + coverup for days on the resort deck.
  • I always recommend bringing something easy to throw on for quick runs to the buffet, especially in the morning for coffee!

Pro tip: bring a reusable insulated water bottle to fill up with coffee, water (or cocktails) to keep warm or cold throughout your cruise.

  • During the evening pack something a bit dressier. For ladies that can be dark pants and a dressy top or a nice dress. Men should bring long pants and a collared shirt for dinner time.

12 Affordable Dresses Perfect for a Cruise Formal Night

There might not be a single event on a cruise that can cause as much stress as formal night.

And all that stress comes from one simple question: What can I wear?

To be fair, it can be a tough question to answer. Over the years, formal night has decidedly become more casual. While it used to be just for formal evening gowns and tuxedos, these days almost anything except for shorts (and sometimes even those) will pass the dress code.

That said, we think you definitely should dress up for formal night. The night isn’t just about you — it’s for everyone headed to dinner in the ship’s dining room. Not everyone gets a special occasion to dress up. Being able to get dolled up and head to dinner with other glamorous-looking folks helps to set the atmosphere.

To learn more about what sort of dress is and isn’t allowed during formal night you can read our article here.

In the meantime, we’ve rounded up a dozen formal dresses — all of which would be perfect for cruise formal night. You can find all of these dresses on Amazon, which typically offers free returns/exchanges if something doesn’t fit just right.

Note: The links to Amazon used below are affiliate links. Should you make a purchase, we receive a small percentage of the sale at no extra cost to you.

Best Affordable Cruise Dresses From Casual To Cocktail

Best Affordable Cruise Dresses From Casual To Cocktail

January 30, 2019 //  by  Follow Me Away //   3 Comments

Are you looking for the cutest and classiest cruise dresses? You have come to the right place! Cruises are the perfect time to buy a few new dresses so you can strut your stuff. I have been on over 15 cruises and know what works and what doesn’t so I am going to give it to you straight! Unlike other articles on the web who are just trying to sell you something, all of the cruise dresses featured in this post are dresses that I actually own and have worn on a cruise myself [sometimes multiple cruises!] This way, you know that I am only suggesting legitimate dresses that are comfy, cute, or classy! These are also dresses I constantly rave about to my family and friends many of whom now own their own versions based on my suggestion.

Like you, I want to look good without breaking the bank. That is why all of these cruise dresses featured here can be found on Amazon for a reasonable price. There is no reason you have to drop a ton of money in order to look fashionable when trying to figure out what to wear on a cruise. Most cruises have at least one formal night, so this article will break down my suggested affordable casual dresses and my suggested formal night dresses. That way, you can be as prepared as possible when you plan what to wear on a cruise!

Best Affordable Cruise Dresses From Casual To Cocktail

Best Casual Cruise Dresses

When it comes to choosing the perfect casual cruise dresses, you are going to want something that is light and airy and breathable. I am from Florida, so I am used to the heat of the Caribbean, but if you are coming from a different climate, the weather may be very warm compared to what you are used to. This is why picking great fabrics and styles is essential so you don’t overheat and have to deal with uncomfortable material. I also highly recommend choosing a few short styles and a few long styles because of the wind you will experience during days at sea. If you wear short cruise dresses while it is windy, you will have your own Marilyn Monroe moment as the dress may fly up! Choose a variety and save these for when you are at port!

Milumia Women’s Floral Print Flowy Maxi Dress.   This dress is my all-time favorite casual cruise dress. If I could only suggest ONE thing to wear on your cruise, this would be the dress! I bought this dress for a trip to India and have since worn it on many cruises. I also have it in like 5-6 colors. It is the queen of cruise dresses. It is casual but classy so you can wear it at night. It is long and flowy so it doesn’t fly up when you are walking on deck. It is not tight fitting so it will NOT show off your figure as you eat and eat on the cruise buffets [perfect for someone who has IBS like me!]. It also comes in a variety of sizes including XS and plus size options so there is something for everyone.

This dress comes in 36 colors so there is plenty to choose from. The colors range from sunny and bright to darker patterns. I prefer the bright colors as they are perfect for a cruise but it is really up to you. I am 120lbs and 5’7 and I wear a size small and it runs a little big on me but I like it that way. I recommend getting something your size for a looser fit or one size smaller than you usually wear for a more fitted feel around the waist! Either way, this is the absolute workhorse of cruise dresses and you cannot go wrong with it!

Best Affordable Cruise Dresses From Casual To Cocktail | Best cruise outfits and cruise dresses for women

Milumia Women’s Boho Dress. I already loved my number one pick above, and this is my number two pick! Buy a few of these cruise dresses and you will be set to go. They pack super small and are very light and airy. This dress is essentially the short version of my #1 pick from above. I have about four of these cruise dresses and I love wearing them with a hat and sandals. They make for a great option for wearing over a swimsuit or for wearing for a day walking around a port.

If you choose to wear this option while onboard the ship, just keep in mind that it is shorter [about knee height] and may fly up exposing your underthings. Ask me how I know? Because it happened to me as I was carrying a huge plate of food and drinks and there wasn’t anything I could do about it! Luckily my underthings looked like they could have been a swimsuit so I was all good! This affordable cruise dress comes in almost 20 colors and multiple sizes ranging from small to plus size options. It is a great flowy option when choosing your cruise outfits because it hardly takes up any space at all!

Milumia Women’s Long-Sleeve Flowy Party Maxi Dress. I would be lying to myself if I didn’t include this option as well because it is one of my favorite cruise dresses. The first option I mentioned is short/cap sleeve. This is the long sleeve version and goes down past your elbow. I was initially worried I would be too hot but the material is so light it makes the perfect cruise outfit! This dress is great for what to wear on a cruise because the long sleeves will protect your arms from sunburn and from chaffing if you are carrying any bags or backpacks. The other reason I love the long-sleeve version of this dress is that unlike the other choices, it comes in solid-color options instead of just prints!

I own this dress in every solid color they offer and check monthly to see if there are more options added so I can buy it in that too. On my last cruise, I wore the yellow and it was a complete showstopper. And the price is so darn affordable too you really can’t go wrong choosing a few of these cruise dresses to take with you on your trip! It comes in 36 colors and a wide variety of sizes!

MSBASIC Women’s Strappy Swing Dress . This is the perfect little casual cruise dress to wear both on board the ship and on land. It is very affordable and the straps are perfect if you are looking to get your tan on. I love that it comes in a variety of prints. I have it with palm trees and leaves which is super cute and tropical. The colors and patterns are rotated out from time to time so always keep an eye out if you are looking for something specific. I also love that this is one of the cruise dresses that comes in both patterned and solid color options so if you love it one way you can easily choose the same style in a different pattern/color with ease! Comes in XS-XL and it does fit snug around the rib area!

Milumia Women’s Crochet Loose Beach Dress . I think that everyone should make sure that at least one of their cruise dresses is white! Okay, of course, you don’t have to, but I love a good white dress to bring along with your cruise outfits because it evokes fun and a carefree attitude. Many cruises also host a “white night” where everyone wears an all-white outfit so this dress can pull double duty! I am not usually a fan of “cold shoulder” looks but I actually really love it on this dress.

Another reason I love this cruise dress is because it is NOT tight fitting so it won’t hug everything while you indulge in food and drink all day. If white isn’t your color, this dress also comes in over 10 other options. It comes in size XS-XXL and fits loose. Just make sure to wear a pair of white or nude undergarments because it can be a little see-through!

Best cruise dresses for women | how to pack for a cruise

Best Formal Cruise Dresses

If you are going on a seven-day cruise, chances are there will be at least 1-2 formal nights. On almost every cruise there is going to be a formal night, unless otherwise stated. Before you go, make sure that you find out how many formal nights there will be so you can plan enough cruise dresses for the trip. I used to go out to the department store and drop a lot of money when planning my cruise attire for formal night, but now I have taken to shopping online because it allows me the comfort and ease of trying on items at home and many dresses have the option for free returns so you can do the entire experience right from your home.

There are two types of people when choosing cruise dresses for formal night and those are people who want cocktail dresses [shorter] or those who want gowns [longer]. If you love dressing up, now is your chance because long dresses are very popular on a cruise, however, short formal dresses fit in perfectly too! Here are a few of my favorite formal cruise dresses that are affordable and classy!

Women’s Short 3D Flower Party Gown. I absolutely LOVE my 3D flower dress and it was a huge hit both on the multiple cruises I wore it on and at the weddings I have worn it at. Sadly I am unable to find the exact listing of the one I purchased, but this one is exactly the same as mine just in a longer style. The short dress I suggested above is similar to mine and comes in a huge variety of sizes and a few colors. It is perfectly fun and girly and really stands out from the black cruise dresses that you always see. Nothing wrong and a great little black dress, but if you want something unique and different, a 3D flower dress is 100% the way to go!

Formal cruise dresses for women when choosing what to wear on a cruise

ACEVOG Women’s Off Shoulder Lace Dress. For those of you who want to strut your stuff while on vacation, I have the perfect cruise dress for you! I have this super affordable dress in black [of course!] and it has made an appearance on multiple cruise formal nights. It is an easy go-to cruise outfit and looks great on just about everyone! It folds up really tiny and barely costs anything so you may want to choose two of these cruise dresses if they fit you well and wear one on each formal night of your trip.

This formal cruise dress is also great for clubbing and going out to the bars late at night too. It comes in 9 colors and sizes from S-XXL. I recommend sizing normally but the small does fit me a bit loose. That being said, I don’t have many curves for it to hug so if you do it will fit even better!

Miusol Women’s Vintage Lace Dress. Looking for a classy yet fabulous dress for your cruise? I love this one and it is perfect if you are looking for a different style other than bodycon or like things a bit more modest yet still fancy. I love the 3/4 sleeves on mine and it provides warmth because cruises often have the air pumping really chilly inside of the dining room. It is a great length and looks fantastic paired with heels. I have this dress in black but it comes in 19 colors. That being said, this listing has a variety of different style options as well so you are getting the most bang for your buck. I have the style I shared above, but I really love some of the other options. They are classy, retro, and if you buy a few styles you will have all your formal cruise dresses nailed down for the entire trip!

Scoop Neck Mermaid Black Lace Evening Dress. If you want a cruise outfit that is a complete showstopper, then THIS DRESS is for you! I love that it is long and how it hugs you at all the right places. The purple underneath is also a shade that you don’t normally see so you can get your pop of color in as well as have your black accents all in one classy dress. As far as formal gowns go, I love that it rings in as quite affordable and the quality is really great and not super crappy and cheap like you may be afraid of. The appliques really add to the beauty of this dress. When traveling with it, I pack it in a plastic garment bag and then lay the bag at the very top of my suitcase. It comes in multiple colors [I love the red!] and in sizes 2-16.

Ever-Pretty Sleeveless V-Neck Evening Dress. Do not let the affordable price fool you from giving this dress a try! First of all, it offers free shipping and returns so if you get it and need a different size of color, you have no issues [I love this!]. Second, you know from my above comments that I love maxi dresses on a cruise. That runs true for cruise formal night too! A long cruise dress is one of my favorite things to wear because they are so effortless and beautiful. This dress comes in a variety of colors and patterns from the traditional black [which is so dressy] to a more playful pink and yellow. What I really like about these cruise dresses are that they are subtle so you can dress them up with the necklaces, earring, and bracelets of your choice. They act as a great way to add in your personality without breaking the bank!

I guess you work for Milumia! I checked these dresses out on Amazon and there are a lot of negative reviews concerning the fit. I think they look pretty in the picture, but reviewers say the fabric is cheap, the bust is too tight, see through, etc. etc. Therefore, I would not take the chance of ordering this dress, as pretty as it looks.

Oh i def don’t work for them and I’ve never been sponsored by them either! Amazon provides FREE returns so you can try it out and if it sucks just return it. I have NEVER purcahsed a see through dress from them and I am slimmer [size 4] with a B cup bust so maybe it is different? But they also offer plus size! Highly recommend and everyone that has purchased through my suggestions agrees!

Designer Cruise Dresses

If you’re going on your first cruise, figuring out what to wear for the formal events can feel like a daunting task. There’s the Captain's dinner, dinner in the main dining room, and other snazzy cruise events you want to stand out for.

To avoid sticking out among the crowd, it’s important that you find the right cruise formal wear to bring with you on your exciting vacation. Understanding the different cruise events and the cruise line’s dress code is key before stocking up on garments.

Nevertheless, participating in formal events on cruise ships is fun! For most people, it allows them to dress up and wear designer cruise dresses they wouldn’t typically wear.

Formal Cruise Event Attire

Before you buy clothes to wear, it’s best to look at the dress code your particular cruise line has set. Cruise ships have hundreds of events happening every night and certain events may have different codes than others. Some dress codes can be “resort casual,” “smart casual,” or “formal” for certain events or daytime wear.

Typically, there are one or two dinners aboard the ship that require formal wear, mainly dinners. Depending on how long your cruise is, there will be somewhere between one and three dinner nights where formal wear is the dress code. Other events that may require you to dress up formally could be the casino or shows.

When a cruise line has a “formal” dress code requirement, it typically means men wear suits or tuxedos and women wear  gala dresses and  evening gowns .

Styles To Bring On a Cruise

Cruise lines and luxury cruise lines are your place to make a statement with the type of designer cruise gowns and styles you bring along with you. Staying on top of the trends is another factor to consider when finding the right cruise ship dresses.

For spring or summer colors, the trending tones seem to be pastel colors, specifically  soft pink and  blue tones . Colors to stay away from onboard a cruise ship are  brown or warm tones relating to this color.  Black , however, is an exception.

Navy , white, and lighter colors are the perfect tones to choose for your nautical voyage. When it comes to patterns and styles, off-the-shoulder dresses, halter tops, spaghetti straps, and sequins can add beauty to your sophisticated look.

Dos and Don’ts of Cruise Dresses

Do’s:.

  • Do Check the Dress Code: Always check the specific cruise line’s dress code . Each cruise may have different guidelines for casual, semi-formal, and formal nights .
  • Do Opt for Versatility: Choose dresses that can be dressed up or down with accessories. This way, you can adapt to different occasions without overpacking.
  • Do Consider Comfort: Select dresses that are comfortable for extended wear. Think about breathable fabrics and comfortable fits, especially for daytime activities.
  • Do Pack a Formal Option: Even if it’s just one, bring a formal dress for special evenings like captain’s dinners or gala nights.
  • Do Think About Layers: Be prepared for varying temperatures. A light shawl or cardigan can be perfect for cooler evenings on the deck.
  • Do Play with Color and Patterns: Cruises are a great opportunity to wear vibrant colors and fun patterns that reflect the joy and relaxation of a holiday.
  • Do Choose Wrinkle-Resistant Fabrics: Look for fabrics that are less prone to wrinkling , as it can be challenging to iron clothes on a cruise ship.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t Overpack: Avoid packing too many dresses. Consider the length of your cruise and plan outfits that can be mixed and matched.
  • Don’t Ignore Comfort for Style: While looking great is important, don’t sacrifice comfort, especially for dresses you’ll wear all day.
  • Don’t Forget About Footwear: Avoid choosing dresses that don’t match the shoes you’ve packed. Comfortable yet stylish footwear is essential.
  • Don’t Disregard Cultural Sensitivities: If your cruise stops in various countries, be mindful of local customs and dress codes, especially in religious or traditional sites.
  • Don’t Overlook Daytime Attire: Remember that daytime on a cruise is just as important. Pack casual dresses suitable for excursions and relaxing on the ship.
  • Don’t Neglect Dress Length: For formal nights, a longer dress might be more appropriate, whereas shorter dresses can be ideal for casual settings.
  • Don’t Underestimate the Wind: On a cruise ship, it can be windy. Choose dresses that won’t easily fly up and cause discomfort or embarrassment.

By following these dos and don’ts, you can ensure a stylish, comfortable, and appropriate wardrobe for your cruise adventure.

Understanding Cruise Dress Code

One of the exciting aspects of a cruise vacation is dressing up for different occasions on board.

Cruise dress codes can vary from one cruise line to another and even between different ships within the same cruise line.

To ensure you’re prepared for any dress code scenario during your cruise, it’s essential to understand the different dress codes and pack accordingly.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the cruise dress code:

Casual Wear

  • Daytime: During the day, casual attire such as shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, swimwear, and flip-flops are generally acceptable. However, make sure to cover up when you’re not at the pool or beach when on board.
  • Evenings: For casual dinners and evenings, resort casual attire is typically recommended. This includes slacks, khakis, jeans, blouses, polo shirts, and casual dresses. Comfortable footwear like sandals or closed-toe shoes is also suitable.

Smart Casual or Resort Casual

  • Daytime: Similar to casual wear, resort casual attire works well during the day.
  • Evenings: For smart casual dinners and evenings, men can opt for collared shirts, dress slacks, and loafers. Women may choose from dresses, skirts, dressy tops, or tailored pants. Avoid jeans, t-shirts, and flip-flops in the dining areas.

Formal or Elegant Evenings

  • Daytime: Even on formal nights, daytime attire remains casual.
  • Evenings: On formal or elegant evenings, cruise lines often encourage passengers to dress up. Men can wear tuxedos, suits, or dress shirts and ties. Women can choose from evening gowns, cocktail dresses, or elegant pantsuits. Remember to pack appropriate footwear, such as dress shoes or heels.

Themed Nights

  • Many cruises host themed nights, such as tropical or 80s-themed parties. These provide a fun opportunity to get creative with your wardrobe and join in the festivities.

Specialty Dining

  • Some cruise lines offer specialty dining venues with dress codes that may require more formal attire. Be sure to check in advance if you plan to dine in these restaurants.

Practical Considerations

  • Don’t forget to pack swimwear, cover-ups, and appropriate footwear for poolside lounging and shore excursions.
  • Consider the climate and itinerary of your cruise. If you’re visiting cooler destinations, bring appropriate layers and outerwear.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are essential for shore excursions and exploring ports of call.

Cruise Line Specifics

  • Each cruise line has its own dress code policy, so it’s crucial to review their guidelines before packing. Some cruise lines are more relaxed, while others have stricter dress codes for formal nights.

Laundry and Dry Cleaning

  • Most cruise ships offer laundry and dry-cleaning services (at a cost). This allows you to re-wear clothing and pack lighter.

Packing Tips

  • Plan your outfits in advance to ensure you have appropriate attire for each day and evening.
  • Roll your clothes to save space in your suitcase and minimize wrinkles.
  • Don’t forget accessories like jewelry, scarves, and belts to elevate your outfits.

Remember that cruise dress codes are intended to enhance the overall experience and atmosphere on board.

While adhering to the dress code, also focus on comfort and personal style to make the most of your cruise vacation. By packing a variety of clothing options, you’ll be well-prepared for any dress code scenario during your cruise.

Cruise excursion outfit ideas

Selecting the right outfits for various cruise excursions is essential for both comfort and style. They ensure participants can fully enjoy their activities while blending practicality with the appropriate dress code for the setting they’ll be exploring.

Beach day attire

A swimsuit is fundamental for a beach day, paired with a stylish cover-up for transitioning from water to land.  Beach sandals  are ideal for walking on hot sand, and a beach bag is perfect for carrying essentials like sunscreen, towels, and a water bottle.

Women should choose swimwear that offers the desired level of coverage and support, and a cover-up that complements the overall look.

Cruise Wear over 50: Flattering Cruise Outfits for Women (plus packing list)

what to wear on a cruise - cruise wear over 50

Sharing is caring!

It’s so much fun packing up and preparing for a cruise . For me, this often starts with thinking about what cruise outfits to wear. While this post is about cruise wear over 50, these cruise fashions can work well for women of all ages!

Please keep in mind that you should always wear what makes you look and feel good. It just happens that I’m turning 50 this summer, but I would wear these cruise outfits at 40 and at 60, and every age in between.

In this post, I share casual cruise wear ideas and formal wear options (all quite affordable). Whether you’re looking for a cute maxi dress or an elegant cocktail dress, I think you’ll like these styles. These outfits aren’t too tight, are versatile, and most importantly, look fabulous!

I’ve also included a few bathing suits and cover ups, shawls, tote bags and evening bags – accessories often complete the look, but are also really useful on a cruise.

I’ve also included photos of some of my own cruise outfits from past cruises. Now, I am by no means a model, but I have a theory that everyone looks good on a cruise .

Cruise Outfits for Ladies over 50

Cruise daywear.

On most cruises you can dress casually during the day, in shorts and a t-shirt, or a sundress.

For port days, consider your shore excursion plans and decide what to wear. If you’re heading to a beach , a bathing suit and cover up are perfect. If you’re sightseeing, a cute top and shorts or a sundress or maxi dress is the way to go.

Casual Dresses – Sundresses &  Maxi Dresses

Casual spaghetti strap sundress.

This casual spaghetti strap sundress is comfortable and cute, and would make a great embarkation day outfit. If you want to pack light for a cruise , you could even wear this dress in the evening with accessories.

This spaghetti strap maxi dress is comfortable and casual for strolling on a port day , but will also look great in the evening on your cruise. Take a look at the different colors and patterns. My favorites are the black, navy floral, and boho.

However, I love a deep blue dress when I’m cruising, so I always pack at least one of this color. Please note that this dress runs a little small, so you may want to size up.

Recommended:  Cute maxi with pockets (see color options & pricing here)

Evening Wear on a Cruise

What? Are you planning a cruise around the world? The list you posted is way too much. No one needs all those clothes for a 7 day cruise. I have been on at least 50 cruises and less is more.

' src=

Everyone is different, so if you bring less than that’s great. Some people enjoy changing a couple of times a day while others are more minimalist. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

' src=

Wow! You are over packing. With 50 plus cruises under my belt I’ve found 3 day outfits and three evening outfits, 1 or 2 bathing suits snd coverup, gym clothes if so inclined., flip flops for the pool, good walking shoes and some pretty Sandals. Underwater and that’s it!

We’re all different, but thanks for sharing your packing list and style.

Have a wonderful cruise!

' src=

Your choices are super cute, but this is definitely a heavy packing list — I say this so newbie cruisers won’t think this is all necessary. I made a list years ago of what I actually wore on a cruise, and now I keep it (laminated) to use for future trips:

– 2 casual dresses – White jeans and two blouses for dinner – 3 pairs shorts/skirts and 5 day blouses – Light denim shirt as a jacket for evening walks on deck – 2 swimsuits and a cover-up for each one – Nightgown – Ball cap and straw hat – Tennis shoes, walking sandals, wedges for dinner

Perfect! Thanks for sharing

' src=

Personally I pack way more than this! Especially if we are driving to the port. I pack less if we are flying and I have to drag my suitcase around. I’ve been on 14 cruises and I’m 53. For me, cruises are a chance to dress up! I love Lilly Pulitzer dresses and shorts because they are bright and cheerful. I love my packing cubes – they are life changing!

Sounds great!

' src=

I tend to take longer cruises. My next cruise in 2024 is 35 days. But even on a 14 day cruise my first purchase would be their laundry package. I find it a great value! I can leave my clothes to be cleaned and have them back the next day clean and pressed. Allows you to have only 3 days of casual clothes if you want. Really space saving if you are flying to the cruise port.

Great idea!

' src=

I recognize your quantities as similar to what is often given, with a few obvious variations, for week long youth camps. I travelled as a child in Australia for 3 months with my family. Six of us in a mini van. Came back and my mum got her pilots license and a small airplane we used for summer vacations. I got really good at paring down. On the other hand, going on an Alaska cruise from Vancouver when one starts out on the ferry, lugging public transit was the only restriction and took a lot less care.

Other than a re positioning, doing my first southern cruise since the 90s in just over a month. This is really pushing my packing thoughts. Used your list as a guide for other one, will do again but still struggling.
