Visit Staffa with Staffa Trips

Over the years, we've shared this special place - and our knowledge of it - with tens of thousands of people. Whether you're interested in geology or seabirds, or if you just fancy being out on the water for a few hours, we look forward to welcoming you aboard and hope you'll enjoy the trip.

The Isle of Staffa – off the west coast of Scotland – is a beautiful uninhabited island, famous for its dramatic basalt columns, sea caves and bird life. Over the years it has captivated thousands of people including Johnson & Boswell, Queen Victoria, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, Jules Verne and Joseph Banks. Fingal’s Cave is always splendid and atmospheric with its basalt columns formed during a period of volcanic activity 59 million years ago. Puffins can be seen ashore in season as well as shags, oystercatchers and black guillemots. We often see guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, kittiwakes, shearwaters gannets, great skuas and other birds from the boat. If you’re lucky, you might see a passing otter, porpoise, dolphin, basking shark or whale! The trip lasts approximately three hours and you can disembark at Fionnphort or Iona. Staffa Trips leave Iona and Fionnphort twice daily (1st April-late October) and we aim to give you at least 1 hour ashore.

  • Geology Staffa was formed during a period of intense volcanic activity some 59 million years ago. Slow cooling of basaltic lava cause the resulting rock to have a polygonal joint pattern. Most of the columns are 5 or 6 sided and free standing.

  • Seabirds The area in which we operate is home to a wide variety of seabirds including Cormorants, Shags, Guillemots, Razorbills, and Shearwaters. Puffins nest on Staffa each year, arriving in early April and leaving again at the end of July. They can often be seen ashore at close quarters during May, June and July.

Seals basking on rocks, seen on a visit to Staffa

  • Marine Life The water around Staffa is home to a wide variety of marine life and we see common seals on most trips. Porpoises and Dolphins are seen fairly regularly, while Minke Whales and Basking Sharks visit when the water is warmest in June, July and August.

Iolaire of Iona, the boat which takes visitors to Staffa

  • Our Boat Staffa Trips’ boat, Iolaire of Iona is a beautiful wooden boat, purpose built to take visitors to Staffa. She’s constructed from larch planks on an oak frame in the carvel style and powered by two diesel engines. She’s lifted out of the water each winter and inspected twice yearly by the MCA.

**Times from Oban subject to confirmation of Calmac 2024 Summer timetable.

Passengers from Oban join the 12:15 Calmac ferry to Craignure, where our minibus awaits to transport you to Ulva Ferry to join the Turus Mara tour.

This trip from Oban is an opportunity to combine a boat trip to visit Fingal’s Cave on Staffa with a little bit of Puffin Therapy (May – July) too!

Turus Mara team up with Caledonian MacBrayne to run trips for those staying in Oban and surrounding areas. On this tour you will join the Ferry in Oban for the 45 minute journey to Mull ( NOTE: you pay for and pick up your Calmac tickets on the day of travel ). From the start of your trip you will have great views of Oban Bay, then the Firth of Lorn, Lismore and the rugged South East corner of Mull including the imposing structure of Duart Castle backed by Ben More and the central Mull mountains.

Transport is provided from the Ferry Terminal at Craignure, through the Loch Na Keal designated National Scenic Area (NSA) to join our trips from Ulva Ferry. Keep an eye out for otters in the loch and both Golden and Sea Eagles as you skirt the loch across from Mull’s largest mountain and only Munro, Ben More.

Your transport arrives at Ulva Ferry with plenty time to join the boat to Staffa – a trip of around an hour cruising via the stunning south side of the community owned Island of Ulva. We will almost certainly encounter common seals and various bird species on this leg of the journey as well as having the opportunity to spot whales, dolphins and other sealife.

On to Staffa and a visit to Fingal’s Cave. On good days follow in many famous footsteps along the causeway and imagine you can hear the first few bars of Mendelssohn’s Overture in the eternal surge of the sea.

Puffins nest on the North East corner of Staffa and visitors can enjoy a little bit of ‘Puffin Therapy’ on most days until early August when the breeding season comes to an end.

The boat ride back to Ulva Ferry to rejoin your transport back to Craignure will usually head back in via Loch a Tuath, allowing for the circumnavigation of Ulva, giving lots more opportunities to spot wildife.

Isle of mull daytrip: staffa and puffin-watching on lunga.

The view of Fingal's Cave on Staffa from the water in Scotland.

I planned my entire trip to the Isle of Mull around one experience – or really, just around a couple of hours. I wanted to see puffins on Lunga, and so off I went to Scotland in June. The best time to see puffins is between April and July, before they fly off in August. Staffa Tours combined the best of both worlds with a visit to out-of-this-world Staffa, and the Treshnish Isles for puffin-watching. It was truly the most incredible day of my life!

A Staffa Tours boat in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.

Departing the Isle of Mull

Our Staffa Tours trip departed from Tobermory at 9:45am. We sailed across the Sound of Mull to Kilchoan (on the Scottish mainland), which only took about 15 minutes. From there, we sailed towards Staffa. It was awesome getting to see Ardnamurchan Lighthouse in the distance—this is the most western point of Scotland and of Britain in general! We also got to see Calgary Bay in the distance – I had swum here just the night before! Thankfully, the waters were pretty calm. Trips can be canceled due to bad weather, extreme wind, or rough seas, but I had nothing but blue skies and perfect conditions on my trip! You can sometimes see dolphins or porpoises in the water here – we saw a porpoise very briefly before it disappeared.

Views from the Sound of Mull to land.

Our boat sailed through the channel between several of the Treshnish Isles before making the journey to Staffa. We could see puffins in the water, on shore, and flying around! But it was time to explore Staffa first.

The isle of Staffa, off of Mull, in Scotland.

Exploring Staffa

If you’re not visiting Lunga or any of the Treshnish Isles, you still have a chance to spot puffins on Staffa. But there’s enough to keep you busy for a few hours if you’re not into birdwatching. There are plenty of walking paths that criss-cross over the island – the views towards Mull are stunning.

The view of Fingal's Cave on Staffa from the water in Scotland.

Fingal’s Cave is by far the best thing to see on Staffa, around Mull, and in the Inner Hebrides in general! While its origin is shrouded in myth and legend, seeing the blue waters lap around the hexagonal basalt columns is simply spectacular. It reminded me so much of the Giant’s Causeway and parts of Iceland ! I loved getting to see Fingal’s Cave up close, but it was also great to see it from the water as we sailed up to Staffa.

A closeup, detailed photo of a puffin's face, eye, and colorful beak on Lunga.

Puffin Heaven on Lunga

The island of Lunga, the largest of the Treshnish Isles, is famous for its wildlife and birdwatching. In particular, it is one of the best places to see puffins in the entirety of the UK. While yes, there are lots of other birds (especially if you walk out to Harp Rock), people come here to see the puffins. I planned this entire trip to Scotland to see puffins on Lunga, and I was not disappointed.

A puffin on Lunga, the Treshnish Isles.

You can get SO close to puffins, who seem very unbothered by people watching them and snapping photos. As in, you can be just a few feet away and close enough to take selfies with them!!

Three puffins, one squaking, on Lunga, the Treshnish Isles.

I could have spent all day just watching them and taking pictures. They are so freaking cute I just can’t get over it!!! Some of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken in my entire life were of the puffins on Lunga. I also saw more expensive camera gear here in one place than I ever have before. This is such an incredible opportunity to get to see puffins up close. If you are remotely interested in birdwatching or photography, or you just think puffins are cute and you love them, you can’t miss this. We had a full two hours on Lunga to puffin-watch to our hearts content. I don’t know if I have ever been so happy!

Back to Tobermory

With most of the days’ excitement over and done with, the journey back to Tobermory on Mull isn’t all that exciting. There are still beautiful views though, and who knows you might get a dolphin greeting as well! We got back to Tobermory right on time, at 4:30pm. It is a full day tour, but even if you’re short on time on your trip to the Isle of Mull, it’s worth it.

You can find out everything you need to know about Staffa Tours on their website . I really recommend this company, I had such a great day and all the staff were really nice and good at pointing out wildlife and landmarks to us on our sailing!

staffa day trip

If you’re headed to the Isle of Mull, you can’t miss the trip to Staffa. And if you’re visiting between April and July – or if you’ve planned your entire trip around this! – you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to see the puffins on Lunga. This was simply one of the best days and such an amazing experience!

Have you ever visited Staffa or Lunga? Did you see the puffins?

6 Scenic Walks on Mull and Iona

You don’t have to head out to far-flung places to enjoy a Hebridean island adventure in Argyll & the Isles. The Islands of Mull, Iona and Staffa are all within day-trip distance of Oban and can easily be visited together. Each of these magical islands offers something different, from the sandy beaches of Mull to the fascinating history of Iona, to the basalt caves of Staffa. Look out for wildlife, including dolphins, basking sharks and sea eagles, as you travel between these three isles.

Want to see all three within a day? Book the Three Isles Tour, operated by West Coast Tours, departing directly from Oban. Sit back and relax whilst an expert guide takes you on a tour of the three island.

Visit Mull, Iona & Staffa in a Day!

Journey through the stunning scenery of the Isle of Mull, delve into the ancient history of Iona then onto the unique Isle of Staffa to see the geological wonders of Fingal’s Cave and, until early August, the opportunity to see its nesting puffins.

The Three Isles Tour, operated by West Coast tours, departs daily from Oban Ferry Terminal, crossing the Firth of Lorn to Craignure on Mull where you join your coach. Here's what you can expect from the journey.

Stop 1: Mull

For many visitors to the West Coast of Scotland, a trip to Mull is a highlight of their holiday. This wonderful island has everything: great beaches, magnificent castles and vibrant cultural life. If you love getting active in the great outdoors you’re in for a treat in Mull, with great walking, cycling and kayaking on offer. Mull also has Ben More, the only Munro on the Inner Hebrides.

On the coach journey, you’ll hear fascinating commentary about the beautiful scenery you’re traveling through and the history of the island. The route through Mull is via Glen More to Fionnphort where you board the ferry for the Isle of Staffa.

Stop 2: Staffa

Staffa lies five miles southwest of Mull.  This dramatic, uninhabited island is best known for its magnificent basalt columns and spectacular sea caves. Go ashore to see the famous Fingal’s Cave, also known as An Uamh Binn (Cave of Melody), which inspired Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture.

You have approx. 1 hour on the island to spot puffins and explore the breathtaking scenery before heading on your third ferry journey of the day towards Iona.

Stop 3: Iona

Dreamy Iona sits off the southwestern-most tip of Mull. The passenger-only ferry from Fionnphort on Mull to Iona takes just 10 minutes. The island is only 1.5 miles wide by 3 miles long, so it’s small enough to explore on foot. Set out to discover beautiful bays, panoramic views and historic sites. Iona is the birthplace of Celtic Christianity.

Iona Abbey, just a short walk from the ferry, is one of Scotland’s most historic and sacred places. The abbey was founded by St Columba and his Irish followers and became the heart of the early Scottish church. The Augustinian Nunnery is an equally peaceful place. Afterwards, take a stroll to St Columba’s Bay at the south end of Iona. It’s believed to be the place where St Columba and his fellow monks landed on Iona in 563.

After approx. 2 hours on Iona, you'll make your journey back to Oban via Mull.

After a packed day of adventure, Oban will welcome you with plenty of places to eat, drink and relax!

The approach to Staffa by sea is breathtaking, with great basalt columns flanking the deep caves which have inspired so much praise. Since all the caves face south-east (with the exception of Clamshell which faces due east) they are best seen by morning light.

If you are fortunate with weather conditions you will be able to land and explore the natural wonders of Fingal’s Cave or Clamshell Cave where the columns are intricately curved and distorted.

On the way to Staffa keep an eye out for dolphins, porpoises and minke whales which are often seen during the warmer months.

A large colony of puffins breed on Staffa every summer and are always a firm favourite with visitors who can see them congregate on the cliffs, diving into the water then return with a beakful of fish. The best time to see the puffins is during the breeding season between the start of May and the start of August when the birds have their distinctive colourful beaks. The puffins are very tolerant of people and it’s possible to get very close to them, making for some great photo opportunities.

2.5 hours. 1 hour ashore on Staffa

Please note: It is possible to join the tour at Fionnphort and return to Iona to explore at your leisure.

On all our tours you will always be accompanied by a local and knowledgeable crew to guide your experience.

BYU senior sprinter Jaslyn Gardner broke the 100-meter and 200m school records as the Robison Invitational concluded with Senior Day on Saturday at the Clarence F. Robison Outdoor Track & Field Complex in Provo.

Gardner first broke the 100m record at 11.22, 0.13 seconds faster than her previous best set at the 2021 Robison Invitational. Less than an hour later, the senior from Enterprise, Utah broke Mindy Neeley McClurkin’s 14-year old 200m school record by .20 seconds as she ran 23.10.

“I focused on my strengths, cues and execution plan,” said Gardner. “It felt good to finish my last time running on the home track with two personal bests and two school records my senior year. I am excited for Big 12 championships and regionals to continue to strive to accomplish more.”

Gardner now holds four individual school records at BYU: 60m, indoor 200m, 100m and outdoor 200m.

“My athletes love to run at home, and no one more than Jas,” said BYU sprints and hurdles coach Kyle Grossarth. “I was happy to see her come out and do what she is capable of in her last opportunity to run at the Clarence F. Robison track. She has had a phenomenal career and I’m excited for her as we head into conference in two weeks.”

Freshman Lainey Jones ran 11.49 in the 100m to move up to No. 3 all-time on the BYU record board and improve on her 11.68 and No. 8 all-time performance achieved in the prelims on April 26.

Alysa Keller won the javelin with her toss of 48.33m/158-6.75. Libby Parkinson placed in second behind Keller with her throw of 46.51m/152-7.

In the women’s pole vault, Rebekah Erikson took home the gold with a jump of 4.30m/14-1.25. Maren Garnett placed third with a new personal best of 4.08m/13-4.75 in her first competition of the season.

Maddie Passmore placed second in the long jump with her personal-best leap of 6.03m/19-9.5.

On the men’s side, Cougar middle-distance runner Sebastian Fernandez broke his own facility record in the 800-meter, running 1:46.77 across the finish line.

The junior from Andover, Minnesota moved to No. 4 all-time in program records with his performance. Fernandez bested his previous facility record and personal best he set nearly two years prior at 2022 Cougar Invitational.

“The race felt very relaxed and very controlled today,” said Fernandez. “At the 600-meter mark, I thought, ‘This is really going to hurt.’ I just kept digging and was able to pull it off.”

The former walk-on was joined in the heat by Olympian and 2016 gold medalist in the 1500m Matthew Centrowitz. Assistant distance coach Ryan Waite competed against Centrowitz as a student-athlete and paced him in preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

“Sebastian was incredible,” said Waite. “His workouts leading up to the race went really well. The biggest thing for him was that he took confidence from those workouts and realized that there was no real difference when he went out on the track to race. It was fun to have Matthew (Centrowitz) join in because he helped the guys with their confidence. It’s great to have an athlete with such experience compete with our crew. I’m excited for Sebastian and the rest of the guys for the rest of the season.”

On the sprints side, Logan Hubler ran 14.01 in the 110m hurdles finals to take first overall and No. 7 all-time. Hubler beat his previous personal best of 14.24.

The Cougars also had individual first overall wins from Luke Grundvig in the 5000m, Dallin Shurts in the discus and Cameron Bates in the javelin throw.

Up next, the Cougars will travel to Waco, Texas for the Big 12 championships May 9-11 at the University of Baylor.

BYU baseball loses doubleheader at Oklahoma State

The BYU baseball team fell to No. 19 Oklahoma State, 11-5 and 12-5, in a doubleheader at O’Brate Stadium in Stillwater, Okla., on Friday.

In the first game, BYU scored five runs on nine hits while the Cowboys put up 11 runs on 10 hits. The Cougars got out to an early 3-0 lead and were later down one through the top of the sixth when Oklahoma State broke away with three runs in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.

Two home runs in the bottom of the eighth gave the Cowboys a 11-5 victory.

Things didn’t get better for BYU in Game 2 as for the first time in the series Oklahoma State scored first taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

BYU answered with three runs in the top of the second for a 3-2 advantage. Brock Watkins got the scoring started with an infield RBI that plated Cooper Vest. One batter later, freshman outfielder Crew McChesney homered to centerfield with Ryker Schow aboard. The blast was McChesney’s first of his BYU career.

But the Cowboys responded with four runs of their own in the top half of the inning to lead 6-3, eventually pulling away to finish off the win over the Cougars.

BYU will play four non-conference games next week before returning to Big 12 play. The Cougars will host Abilene Christian at Miller Park on Monday, April 29 at 11 a.m., before heading to Miami to take on the Hurricanes, May 2-4.

Cougar softball can’t stay with Baylor on Senior Night

BYU softball fell to Baylor in five innings, 14-4 in its final home game of the 2024 season on Friday night.

After a two-run homer by senior Violet Zavodnik in the first inning, Baylor exploded by scoring six runs in the second inning and a game-altering eight more in the fourth, including a grand slam. Fourteen runs are the second-most scored by any of BYU’s opponent this season.

Following the game, BYU honored its six seniors, Macy Simmons, Huntyr Ava, Chloe Temples, Maddie Bejarano, Taryn Lennon and Zavodnik on the field in a senior night celebration.

The Cougars will travel to play at Miller Ranch Stadium for a single matchup against Idaho State on Tuesday, April 30 at 4 p.m. MDT, with live coverage on ESPN+.

Parents of two Hinton wrestlers file lawsuits against school and staff members

HINTON, Iowa (KTIV) - Parents of two wrestlers of the Hinton Wrestling team have filed a lawsuit against the Hinton Community School District and several school staff.

The lawsuit names the school district, Superintendent Ken Slater, Athletic Director Brian DeJong and two wrestling coaches, Casey Crawford and Bradley Skuodas for what they allege was sadomasochistic abuse.

In March, the Hinton School Board held a special meeting to discuss the resignation of two principals , one of those was for DeJong, the 4th- 6th-grade Principal and Athletic Director.

The parents, whom KTIV has decided not to name to protect their children, filed a lawsuit at the beginning of April. These lawsuits claim wrestling practices were a place for harassment and bullying against members of the junior varsity.

It alleges the coaches encouraged the students to play violent and aggressive games against underclassmen and they were even choked out and punched. The lawsuit also says that the coaches did nothing to stop the violence.

The lawsuits also claim that on a trip to Nebraska, some students went to a mall where they purchased sex toys that were then used to assault other students, and the assaults were photographed and disseminated.

Both lawsuits filed claims that the coaches did not inform parents of the assaults. The lawsuit also alleges that on a trip to Coralville, Iowa in February 2024 one student brought along a taser that was used on some of the students. Shortly after the trip, the wrestling coaches were put on administrative leave . On March 18, Crawford, the school’s head wrestling coach submitted his resignation .

The lawsuit says that during that trip, the coaches and athletic director consumed alcohol while on a school-sponsored trip.

There are also allegations coach Casey Crawford instructed the wrestlers to delete messages that would get him and those named in the lawsuit in trouble.

The lawsuits say the two students suffered mental, physical and emotional distress and the district did nothing to stop the incidents even though they were made aware of what happened.

KTIV has reached out to the superintendent of Hinton Community Schools who directed KTIV to the school district’s lawyers. Their statement is below:
