By Katia Luz

We can show you the way, how to get visit the clear waters by boat, and what to enjoy along the way, and beaches close by and where to stay, and towns and villages to explore, accommodation nearby, tavernas and restaurants.

Chrissi Island is a natural protected island and landing on it is prohibited.

About the Island

Chrissi or Χρυσή means 'golden' and refers to the stunning sand on the beaches of this islet. This small, uninhabited, low-lying island is 7 km by 2 km and only 30 metres, at its highest point. The rocky island has many beaches visited from spring to autumn by water craft and tour boats.

The island is south of Ierapetra in south-eastern Crete - see the section on how to get here

The interior of the island is covered by a beautiful forest of juniper trees Juniperus macrocarpa . Such is the environmental value of the island's ecosystem that it is protected as an area under the EU Natura 2000 program.

There is a forest, Minoan ruins, and a little chapel

Top Tips from We Love Crete

Buy a ticket in Ierapetra for the boat trip at:

  • the port ticket office of Cretan Daily Cruises, at the portside opposite Plateia Kanoupaki, at the junction of Stratigou Samouil  and Ethnikis Antistaseos
  • 25 Kyrva Street next to La Strada pizza restaurant
  • 14 Kyrva Street across from the taxi stand at Plateia Kanoupaki
  • the port in Makrigialos

Ierapetra is your departure point for a boat cruise to Chrissi Island

The town of Ierapetra is your embarkation point for Chrissi Island, and a well-loved holiday destination itself, with many fine beaches, a ruined Venetian fort, a lovely esplanade, historic museums and lots to explore.

Located just 36 km from Agios Nikoloas in Lasithi, this town is easy to access via the national roads and on the very handy KTEL local buses.

This town is 61 km from Sitia , which has its own airport, and again can be reached easily with a hire car via the national roads, or on KTEL buses.

If you are driving from Heraklion to Ierapetra over 93 km, leave about 3 hours to enjoy the journey.

Once in Ierapetra, this small town provides everything you need for a break. Do visit the seaside tavernas for a fresh seafood dinner whilst watching the sun set down over the Libyan Sea, gazing metaphorically to Africa.

 CRUISE DETAILED DESCRIPTION

View the island on google map.

Chrissi is a miracle of nature in the vastness of Libyan Sea. Born from the eruption of the submarine volcano that created it 350,000 years ago.

It has an area of 4,743 square kilometers, and a maximum altitude of 27 meters. It’s an islet known for its exotic waters in all the shades of blue and green, the golden beaches -where it got its name from-, and the protected forest with the cedar trees, which are over 200 years old. Chrissi is a piece of paradise on earth, the southernmost natural park of Europe, and a  gem in the Mediterranean.

Listening to pleasant music, we travel all the way to the South, on the borders of Europe and Africa, in the embrace of the Libyan Sea, with flying companions the herring gulls, who are vigilant "guardians" of the inaccessible, island borders. The trip from the port of Ierapetra to the exotic Chrissi lasts about 1 hour.

On the island there are traces of a Minoan settlement that prospered from the trade of porphyra, which is the popular red pigment used for dying royal clothes. Recently, the  biggest laver farm in the Mediterranean  was discovered there.  The cedar forest extends to the center of Chrissi, covering an area of 350,000 square meters, which is about 1/4 th  of the island, with an average of 14 trees per 1,000 square meters, and average age of trees 200-300 years. Those trees is a rare variety of Lebanon cedars, 1 meter tall, and with a diameter of up to 1 meter. The cedars have a root system that develops at a radius of at least double their height. Except from their large roots, they also develop a network of thinner ones that form a thick mesh that withholds the sand.

As we approach, the dark blue of the sea gives its place to increasingly light shades. The island is surrounded by shallow bays and sandy beaches covered with shells, one of the characteristic features of the island.  The options for swimming and diving in calm, turquoise waters are many. The protagonist is the beach Chrissi Ammos or Belegrina with its exotic waters, located in the north of the island. Other idyllic bays are Hatzivolakas to the northwest, Fokiospilo to the northeast, the Treis Vagies to the southeast, Kataprosopo to the east and the southern beach at "Vougiou Mati".

The ship anchors in a leeward spot near a selected beach for swimming and enjoying the crystal clear waters, a short distance from the shore to facilitate access for passengers who want to reach the island by swimming.

Our journey will continue by sailing close to island so that you have the opportunity to admire the beautiful coastline and the view of the island from the sea, enjoying a sea cruise in the exotic waters of Libyan Sea.

The colors of the rocks, which are mainly grey-green, reddish-brown, black, etc., are spectacular, while almost the entire island is covered by golden sand. The base rocks of Chrissi were created through the solidification of lava that poured out of an undersea volcano millions of years ago. The 49 species of fossils (corals, shells, barnacles, urchins) found on the island come from the sea. They were imprinted on the volcanic rocks 350,000-70,000 years ago, when Chrissi was still underwater. The northern shores (Belegrina, Hatzivolakas, Kataprosopo) are filled with shells. Especially on the east side of the northern beach, the amount of shells is so big that the view is overwhelming.

The ship's self-service restaurant-bar is open throughout the cruise, so you can enjoy a delicious meal, salad, wine, snacks, coffee, soft drinks, ice creams, etc. on board.

The preservation of the island’s natural environment, beyond the moral dimensions, is imposed through a strict national and European institutional protection system.

  • Hiking outside the beaches and the use of the shade of the junipers
  • The collection of rocks, fossils, shells and ancient finds
  • The collection of plants and animal catching
  • Free camping
  • Starting a fire
  • Smoking around bushes and woodlands
  • Any kind of pollution. Make sure that you don't leave any garbage behind, but take them back with you on the ship

The dream trip, the beautiful images of nature, swimming in the crystal clear sea complete an unforgettable experience.

Relaxation, serenity, and a sense of tropical adventure!

Incredible destination…

Have a great time!

  • Chrissi island

Chrissi island or Gaidouronisi is located 8 miles south of Ierapetra city , in the open South Cretan Sea. It is a flat islet very famous for its tropical blue water that cover all possible palette hues of blue and green, the protected forest with large juniper trees and the thousands of broken shells that make the sand pinkish. The residents of Ierapetra love this island and call it simply "the Island ". It is said that years ago by Gianni Agnelli , the chairman of Ferrari, wanted to buy the island to make it a tourist attraction.

Chrissi takes its name ( golden in Greek) after the white sand that covers the entire island and comes mainly from shell debris. The tropical beaches are crowded by many visitors who come by the excursion boats that leave Ierapetra in the morning and return in the afternoon. Chrissi has been declared as an area of natural beauty and it is strictly prohibited to camp and spend your night here. You must keep away from the fragile juniper trees and avoid not collecting sand or shells.

Map of the isle

The thousands of visitors arriving daily by boat from Ierapetra to Chrissi island mainly swim on the beach of Belegrina or Golden Beach. Bright blue waters, white sand with pink shades from the thousands of broken shells, and the junipers that hold the sand with their huge roots are the backdrop that makes anyone fall in love with this place.

chrissi island trip

An important settlement of the Minoan and Roman period has been found in the island Chrysea of ancient Greeks, the present island of Chrissi or Gaidouronisi. Buildings and at least three carved tombs have been identified near the church of Agios Nikolaos and the lighthouse on the island. The settlement was probably used for the production of Tyrian purple from the shells of Murex brandaris, exactly like the neighboring isle of Koufonissi.

chrissi island trip

The dunes of the central narrowest part of the island of Chryssi, we meet one of the most important juniper wood (sp. Juniperus macrocarpa ) in Greece, which has prevailed (erroneously) with the name cedarwood. In other parts of the island, such as west and east, we encounter vegetation with Juniperus phoenicea being the main plant.

chrissi island trip

At the west part of Chrissi islet you will meet the small lighthouse, powered by photovoltaic panel. The lighthouse is located close to the small chapel of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas) and the dried lake of the island.

chrissi island trip

Next to the only house of Chrissi island, at position Spilios, we meet the old saltpan where salt was produced in the past. In winter the spot turns into a small pond with brackish water and it attracts many migratory birds. This is not the only pond on the island, as a smaller one is formed in the location of Kaki Alyki.

chrissi island trip

Chrissi can be considered a paradise for geology enthusiasts. One of the most spectacular geological sights of the island can be seen east of Belerinina beach, where you will meet thousands of fossils, mainly bivalves. The fossils form a so-called thanatocoenosis, that is, dead shells that have been gathered there by the streams and have fossilized over time.

chrissi island trip

The church of Agios Nikolaos is located on the northern side of the island Chrissi, at the site where Tyrian purple was produced and graves are located. It dates back to the 13th century, although it has undergone more recent interventions. The temple is built on the site of an ancient building.

chrissi island trip

Situated 15km off of Ierapetra on the South coast of Crete, the natural beauty spot of Chrissi (Chrysi) island with its protected ecosystem can be found. Though no longer a secret location, Chrissi island rather resembles paradise with its white sand beaches and African Cedarwoods not to mention the crystal clear blue water perfect for snorkeling. Read on to discover if a day trip to Chrissi Island could be one of the many highlights of your trip to Crete.

Covering an area of 4,743 sq km (7km in length and 2km wide), Chrissi Island is a protected nature reserve covered by the European initiative; Natura 2000. An important ecosystem, it is the natural habitat of snakes (non-poisonous), lizards, worms, and rabbits with Caretta-Caretta sea turtles and the Monk Seal Monachus-Monachus also visiting the island.

chrissi island trip

A rare 200-300-year-old cedar forest covers 70% of the island, making it the largest naturally formed Lebanon cedar forest in Europe with the trees reaching 7-10 meters in height and 1 meter in diameter.

The island was formed from solidified lava and 49 species of fossils (made up of shells, corals, barnacles, and urchins) have been discovered, these being trapped by the lava between 350,000-70,000 years ago when the island was still underwater.

Chrissi Island is the southernmost natural park in Europe (though not the most southerly point of Europe which is at another island just off of Crete; Gavdos) and is sure to make you think for a moment that you’ve landed up in Bali or somewhere in the Caribbean rather than a stone’s throw away from the Greek island of Crete!

chrissi island trip

Inhabited by pirates (ruins of pirate merchant ships lay on the bottom of the seabed) and hermits in recent history Chrissi island has a 13th-century church and graves from the Roman Empire. However, recent archaeological discoveries show that humans have been visiting Chrissi Island as far back as Minoan times.

Evidence shows that people would have most certainly used Chrissi Island for fishing and salt mining but perhaps, due to the availability of shells, it was also here that the classical antiquity dye known as Royal Purple was made using the extracted mucus of the spiny dye-murex snail.

chrissi island trip

Named Chrissi (Χρυσή) for its golden beaches, the island also has another name – Gaidouronisi. This translates as ‘the island of the donkeys’ as locals from Ierapetra used to take their beloved old donkeys across to Chrissi so that they (the donkeys) could spend their last days enjoying the pristine beauty of the place.

Today it’s the tourists who enjoy the natural beauty of this idyllic islet!
