Transportation | New CDOT travel app aims to make navigating Colorado road closures, winter conditions easier

Free cotrip planner app integrates real-time information on iphone and android devices.

Interstate 70 was closed down in ...

The free COtrip Planner app, which launched Oct. 1 in the Apple and Android app stores, adapts the same road-condition and closure information that CDOT long has provided via its COtrip.org website . The website also has a more user-friendly refresh, and both integrate Google’s recognizable mapping interface as their backbones, with CDOT live conditions available as overlays.

The COtrip changes were the result of a $2.1 million state contract that also included an upgrade of CDOT’s Advanced Traffic Management System. That system feeds live data to its operations centers and plays a key role in management of highway incidents.

App users can plot out driving routes and see traffic buildups, weather conditions affecting travel, construction projects and partial or full road closures — along with stretches where chain laws are in effect. A “trucker mode” shows information specialized for big-rig drivers.

The app’s “TellMe” function allows hands-free use, with the app announcing upcoming conditions and incidents along the route or in the area. The app also allows users to view live road cameras on CDOT’s network across the state.

A drawback is that live road information is available only for state and federal highways, not local roads.

Later this fall, CDOT says, winter-specific features will be added including weather alerts and a snowplow tracker. While turn-by-turn directions aren’t yet available, CDOT says that function is expected in a future update.

The COtrip app enters a field that’s been dominated for years by Colorado-specific travel apps developed by private companies that incorporate road information provided publicly by CDOT. But while some of those stay up to date, others have sputtered or been neglected, making them unreliable.

One app by a private developer is called CDOT Colorado Road Conditions and costs $2.99 on the Apple App Store. Department spokeswoman Stacia Sellers said it has no official connection to CDOT, despite the name.

Cdot launches new, user-friendly road condition and travel planner website and mobile app.

Screenshot of the new interactive map with customizable layers on cotrip.org.

CDOT  launched the updated website Sept. 29, touting new tools that will help travelers plan their route in advance and be prepared for road or lane closures or adverse road conditions. COtrip.org has been in use for nearly two decades.

“This is an exciting time for our agency,” said Bob Fifer, CDOT’s branch manager of the Intelligent Transportation Systems & Network Services. “We are evolving legacy systems to better serve the traveling public. The new website brings more of our transportation technologies into one lense, improving the customer experience. We added several new features, while reducing system maintenance costs. Now, travelers can customize routes from point A to point B to see if their trip may be impacted by any road or lane closures. Motorists will have an easier time identifying road closures, road conditions and construction impacts, all while replacing outdated technologies.”

The new website incorporates the following new features:

Traveler Information & Layers

The COtrip website is powered by a dynamic Google Map™. Motorists can use the map as they would any Google map and click on the icons for more information. Icons are displayed on the map by checking or unchecking the boxes in the layers toolbar. Layers available and what data they provide are described here.

Trucker’s Layers

The new Trucker Mode features resources specific to commercial motor vehicle operators, including the following layers defined here.

My COtrip & Travel Alerts

Motorists can log-in in or sign up here for their own COtrip account to subscribe and manage their travel alerts. They can also save their favorite routes and cameras, and customize their travel preferences.

COtrip on Social Media

COtrip traveler information is automatically posted to the @ColoradoDOT Twitter feed. New roadway hashtags and Twitter threads were rolled out in Spring 2021, making it easier for users to track and stay updated on closures and incidents from CDOT. Follow @ColoradoDOT on Twitter for real-time travel information and road conditions.

511 Telephone Service

The 511 telephone service is an interactive, voice-activated traffic information system motorists can access by calling 511 (within Colorado) or 1-800-288-1047 (nationwide). This system has not changed, and will continue to provide a real-time option for travelers to get road conditions and traffic information. Learn more about 511 and how to use this service here.

“The updated website will be a great new tool for the public, however, we also wanted to bring the same information to your mobile device. ” said Fifer. “With that in mind, we are pleased to announce that we are also launching a brand new mobile app on Oct. 1. Now travelers will be conveniently informed no matter where they go. We are committed to continuously improving access to highway information and technologies.”

The new COtrip Planner mobile app was designed to meet the growing trend of information on mobile and tablet devices for the traveling public. The COtrip Planner app provides statewide, real-time traffic information, and works on smartphones and tablets that operate on iOS and Android platforms. Download the app in the Apple Store or Google Play Store starting on Oct. 1.

The app will be fully implemented in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Oct. 1

Traveler app with hands-free, eyes free functionality with customized CDOT layers now available

  • Phase 2: Fall 2021

Winter-specific layers including weather warnings, weather stations, plow tracker with CDOT snowplow contest names, and Express Lanes

  • Phase 3: Winter 2021/2022

My COtrip accounts integrated and new map search functionality, including event and camera clustering, predefined routes/areas, and adding an electronic sign layer

Social sharing of cameras and road conditions will also be available

  • Future State

Turn-by-turn directions and recommended routes to user mapping app (Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze)

Alert banners and push notifications

Rockfall and wildlife reporting

The COtrip Planner app also includes a feature called TellMe, which enables app users to be hands-free on their route. TellMe detects the user’s current location, speed and direction of travel to announce upcoming road conditions and traffic incidents as they travel along their route.

“We want Coloradans and visitors to our great state to have all of the information they need to plan a safe trip, no matter where they go on our state highways and interstates,” said Fifer. “We hope all drivers will take advantage of the website and mobile app before getting into their vehicles for a safe and more convenient trip as both tools will help to eliminate any ‘surprises’ on the roadway.”

One app to rule them all

As an Over The Road truck driver who travels across CO/WY weekly, this app has proven to be near perfect. Not only has it combined the data I usually get from numerous apps but it also makes getting camera views so much easier. Also one of the main features it has is the notification when a road alert has been removed, which isn’t available with the official state 511 apps. What used to take a good amount of time to trip plan is now accomplished in just a couple of minutes. Developer was quick to respond to a suggestion I had and followed up with me. Highly recommend it for anyone traveling.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for the review!!!

Great data aggregator in user friendly format

This lone soldier has done something that CDOT dared not do - actually aggregated all of the available data into an easy to digest format in a stable, modern app. Google was telling me there was, of course, a 29 minute delay on my way to Broomfield last night because of a crash. I used this app to pull up the cameras on 25 to see if the crash was still there. It was not only still there, but traffic was dead stopped. By looking at the cameras, we were able to see that the express lanes were empty and unaffected. As a result we took the express land and blew past stopped traffic at 65, saving us at least 30 minutes.
Thank you for the review!  Great to hear the app was useful for you!

Absolutely outstanding. Could save lives.

Downloaded this app in preparation for a trip across Colorado along I-70 crossing the entire state in February. Since February can be a brutal weather month I want to have access to as much information to be as prepared as possible. After playing with the app for about 10 minutes to get an understanding of how to use it, it is clear that this app is the best travel tool I have ever used. Very easy to learn, easy to navigate and can really save someone from being unprepared driving into dangerous road conditions.

CDOT launches new, user-friendly road condition and travel planner website and mobile app

News release.

Statewide   - The Colorado Department of Transportation launched a new, easy-to-use COtrip.org website on Sept. 29 that features a new 511 map that will allow drivers to safely navigate Colorado roads. While motorists have been using COtrip.org for nearly two decades, this updated website will offer new features that will help travelers plan their route ahead of time, and be prepared for road or lane closures or adverse road conditions.

“This is an exciting time for our agency,” said Bob Fifer, CDOT’s branch manager of the Intelligent Transportation Systems & Network Services. “We are evolving legacy systems to better serve the traveling public. The new website brings more of our transportation technologies into one lens, improving the customer experience.

Layers available and what data the layers provide is described here .

Planning a summer trip? These MO parks ranked among the best places to camp in the Midwest

colorado trip planner cdot

Two Missouri parks have been named among the best places to camp in the Midwest.

The Dyrt, a camping platform that lists campgrounds, reviews and tips, released its Best Places to Camp Regional Awards this week. The platform divides winners into six regions of the country: Pacific, Mountain, Central, Midwest, Northeast and Southeast. For the Midwest region, B Berry Farms & Co. in Elkland ranked No. 5 and Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park in Middle Brook rounded out the list at No. 10.

B Berry Farms & Co.

Located off 96 Dusty Drive in Elkland, B Berry Farms & Co. is a 40-acre family-owned farm that offers indoor and outdoor camping experiences, in addition to independent berry picking. Seven of the farm's acres are covered in more than 4,000 you-pick berry bushes.

B Berry Farms & Co. also offers color-coded hiking trails, two horseshoe pitching areas, pool and darts, ax throwing, adult swings, adult and children's suspension bridges, a 12-foot climbing wall, sandboxes, volleyball and badminton courts, a waterpark play area, playground, showers, restrooms and hand laundry tube. Eggs, vegetables and baked goods like bread, cinnamon rolls, cookies and muffins are also available for purchase at the farm.

“Even if you aren’t going to see the lakes around (we didn’t) there is plenty to entertain you right on the farm," The Dyrt users Abe and Makayla wrote about B Berry Farms & Co. "There is an abundance of wildflowers, walking trails, chill zones, a water park, outdoor solar shower, bugs, a friggin' berry field. WITH PINK BLUEBERRIES!!!! They taste like cotton candy — you have to ask about them.”

Campsites can be booked on The Dyrt or the B Berry Farms & Co. website at bberryfarms.com/ . Outdoor campsites range between $7-24 per 24-hour stay. The farm's Barn Bunkhouse is available for $40 per 24 hours.

Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park

A Missouri state park, Johnson's Shut-Ins is located in Middle Brook, surrounded by the St. Francois Mountains. The park offers swimming, several hiking, cycling and horseback riding trails, and fishing. A campground store is also open at the state park, offering basic camping supplies, snacks, nature guides, souvenirs and games.

“This place has what you need for a good camping trip," The Dyrt user Dave wrote about Johnson's Shut-Ins. "The general store has the essentials, the campground is clean, sites are decently spaced with enough privacy. Thumbs up.”

Campsites can be booked on The Dyrt or the Missouri State Parks website at mostateparks.com/park/johnsons-shut-ins-state-park . Campsites range between $15-30 April through October and $14-27 November through March. These price ranges are dependent on the RV hook-ups available.

What other Midwest parks made the cut?

The remaining Midwest winners were:

  • No. 1: Sandy Springs Campground in Ohio
  • No. 2: Hitchcock County Nature Center in Iowa
  • No. 3: Mouth of Two Hearted River State Forest Campground in Michigan
  • No. 4: Voyageurs National Park Backcountry Camping in Minnesota
  • No. 6: Sangchris Lake State Park in Illinois
  • No. 7: Wyalusing State Park in Wisconsin
  • No. 8: Indiana Dunes State Park in Indiana
  • No. 9: Lamb's Resort in Minnesota

The Dyrt's Best Places to Camp Regional Awards are dependent on reviews and ratings from platform users.

Transportation Planning

I-70 Signs & Mountains

CDOT conducts a continuing, comprehensive, and cooperative (3C), performance-based, multimodal transportation planning process in accordance with federal and state requirements.

Our Partners in Planning

CDOT works closely with many planning partners throughout the state, including local officials in the ten rural and five metropolitan Transportation Planning Regions (TPRs). The Regional Planning Commissions (RPCs) in these fifteen regions meet regularly to plan for their areas. The Statewide Transportation Advisory Committee (STAC), comprised of representatives from each of these planning organizations, meets monthly to advise the Department and the Transportation Commission on the multimodal transportation matters of the state. Transportation stakeholders are also represented on other statewide planning bodies including the Statewide MPO Committee, Transit and Rail Advisory Committee (TRAC), and the Freight Advisory Council (FAC) .

The Products of Planning

Transportation planning is an ongoing process that periodically culminates in the development or update of several required planning products including a  Statewide Transportation Plan  (SWP),  Regional Transportation Plans  (RTPs), and a  Statewide Transportation Improvement Program  (STIP). These products include:

  • Performance objectives with both short-term and long-term goals for the multimodal transportation system,
  • Strategies to achieve these performance objectives, and
  • Priorities for investment in transportation programs and projects.

The most recent transportation legislation requires a performance-based approach to planning. Colorado’s multimodal transportation planning process reflects this performance-based approach to planning by incorporating extensive use of research, data and analysis to inform decision-making, including the establishment of goals and performance objectives, distribution of resources, and project selection.

Planning Coordination at CDOT

The transportation planning process is coordinated by the  Multimodal Planning Branch (MPB)  in the  Division of Transportation Development (DTD) , in conjunction with the CDOT Engineering Regions . It is a multimodal planning process that includes extensive coordination both internally at CDOT and externally with statewide stakeholders. Primary internal partners include: DTD’s Transportation Performance Branch (TPB) and Information Management Branch (IMB); Division of Accounting and Finance (DAF); Division of Transportation System Management & Operations (TSMO); and the Division of Transit & Rail (DTR). External coordination involves regional planning partners and organizations, other key stakeholder groups and the general public. The MPB coordinates planning activities, integrates planning products from different CDOT Engineering Regions and Divisions, incorporates input from the various stakeholders, and provides analysis and policy development support based on a comprehensive, statewide, multimodal perspective.
