Colosseum Underground Tour: The Amphitheatre’s Hidden Hypogeum

Home / Blog / Colosseum Underground Tour: The Amphitheatre’s Hidden Hypogeum

colosseum hypogeum tour

Cast your mind back two millennia and picture the combined chaos of men and beasts alike, primed for what is to come; each step you take during this Colosseum Underground Tour retraces that of those pacing in anticipation of their rise into Rome’s great amphitheatre.

By descending into the depths of this Roman arena, you receive a backstage pass to the Romans’ most sought after show. Preserved from the elements that have weathered the sights above, Walks Inside Rome’s underground tour transports you inside the belly of the beast that is the Colosseum .

Exploring the arena’s underground network

Led by an expert local guide, your small group’s underground tour of the Colosseum will discover the hidden maze of rooms, tunnels, and wooden elevators that spanned two levels under the sandy arena floor.

Colosseum Underground

Inner workings of the hypogeum

This labyrinth of passageways also contained a complex water and drainage system. Why? Because the brightest Roman minds had decided this was the best way to aid in the disposal of the blood and excrement that seeped from above. Add a suffocating darkness and appalling smell and you can truly sense the horrors that the Colosseum’s awaiting participants endured.

Formed in white travertine, the Colosseum Underground Tour paints a picture of the amphitheatre’s bright appearance to onlooking Roman eyes. Try to imagine the landmarks seen in a Colosseum and Gladiator’s Gate small group tour shining in a similar way before being battered by 2,000 years of earthquakes, fires, and lightning strikes.

The Colosseum’s hidden history

The underground network, known as the hypogeum , played an essential role in the Colosseum’s inaugural games (80 AD). Over 9,000 exotic creatures passed through the 32 animal holding pens, which can still be seen today, on their way to entertaining the 50,000 – 80,000 eager spectators.

Your guide will tell of how these games (and the Colosseum in general) were intended as a societal pacification, as emperor Flavius Vespasianus looked to curtail a tumultuous period kickstarted by the power vacuum left behind by emperor Nero’s tyrannical rule.

Known originally as the Flavian Amphitheatre , the spectacle’s name differed to what we know today in reference to the ‘Colossus’, a 35-metre bronze tall statue of Apollo. This marvel, which stood outside the Colosseum, was ordered to be created by Nero on his Golden Palace and it was here that Vespasian and his son, Titus, erected the arena in the 70s AD.

Colosseum

Colossus Statue of Apollo

Looking from the arena floor

Much like a Colosseum arena tour , your experience begins by gazing below at the hypogeum from the ampitheatre’s sand floor. Here you will realise the grandeur of the Colosseum’s events seen by entranced senatorial eyes.

So, what exactly took place in this baying atmosphere? Gladiators are by far the Colosseum’s most famed contestants. However, the Colosseum’s underground also sat directly below merciless executions, intricate battle re-enactments, and beastly animal hunts.

Following a ghastly run of events, which included both the fire of Rome and Vesuvius’ engulfing of Pompeii and Herculaneum, Titus established the initial games in a bid to divert public attention and win over the Gods. Your small group will relive how 5,000 animals were procured from across the Roman Empire for the 100-day event that is best remembered for the Gladiatorial spectacle of Versus and Priscus.

The Colosseum Underground Tour , which can be taken either privately or in an exclusive group, will enlighten you on how these animals, men, and props were winched from the dark depths below to the joy of the crowd above.

Experience Ancient Rome’s other marvels

Not only will your expert local guide take you through the underpasses of one of Rome’s most recognisable landmarks, you will also pass numerous unforgettable monuments and ruins.

  • Arch of Constantine: Forged in dedication to Constantine the Great (c.315 AD), this breathtaking arch stands 21 metres high. You will revel in stories of the monument’s creation, which commemorated a great victory of Constantine three years previous.
  • Roman Forum: Here you will take a passeggiata (stroll) through another of Rome’s great excavated wonders. Passing the crematorial site of Julius Caesar , the area of the eternally-lit fires at the Temple of Vesta, and the collection of ancient basilicas, the hub of the Roman Empire, will come to life beneath your feet.
  • Arch of Septimius Severus: This is not the first fading relic you will pass that commemorates a monumental victory. Once a nod to the bloody battle against the Parthians, the sight now plays the beautiful backdrop for couples’ neverending selfies.
  • Palatine Hill: Following a tour of ancient Rome’s greatest, and darkest, moments, the Colosseum Underground Tour returns you to the city’s very beginnings. Artefacts from huts dating back to the 7th century BC allude to humble beginnings at the site that hosted emperors’ palace complexes in its heyday.

Hypogeum: How To Visit The Underground Network Of The Famous Colosseum Of Rome

The Colosseum is much more than meets the eye. There are two levels of tunnels below the floor of the ancient amphitheater.

Quick Links

The massive size & construction of the colosseum in rome, the roman arena & hypogeum of the colosseum, visiting the hypogeum (tunnels) of the colosseum with a vip tour.

Few, if any, surviving Roman monuments are as famous and impressive as the Colosseum. It is a massive elliptical amphitheater in the heart of Rome just to the east of the ancient Roman Forum - the former beating heart of Rome . As the leading entertainment center for hundreds of years, the Colosseum was built with a maze of tunnels under its floors. Remember the scene from the 2000 movie Gladiator when the tigers appear through the trap doors?

The Colosseum truly is a marvel of Roman engineering - it even once had a retractable roof . The Colosseum was used for gladiatorial battles, animal hunts, executions, bloody re-enactments of battles, and more. While the Colosseum may not have looked quite like it was portrayed in the movie Gladiator , many of the details shown in the movie are broadly accurate.

The Colosseum remains the largest ancient amphitheater ever built and is still the largest standing amphitheater in the world (larger than the impressive but overlooked "Colosseum" in Tunisia ). As the three emperors who worked on the Colosseum were of the Flavian dynasty (namely Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian), the amphitheater has been called the Flavium Amphitheater (although the Romans just called it the Amphitheater). The name "Colosseum" is thought to have come from a Colossus (i.e., larger-than-life statue) of Emperor Nero that once stood outside the amphitheater.

The Colosseum was started by Emperor Vespasian and completed by Titus. Its period of construction was between AD 72 and AD 80. Modifications were made to the Colosseum after its construction by Domitian. At first, The Colosseum's floor was able to be flooded so that the Romans could hold naval battle re-enactments (but that was soon moved elsewhere where the surface area could be bigger and the water deeper).

  • Built: 72-80 AD
  • Capacity: 50,000-80,000

The Colosseum was built of travertine limestone with brick-faced concrete. Its capacity was between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators.

While the Colosseum is still impressive, it is but a ruin, having been substantially degraded by earthquakes and stone robbers over the years.

Related: Where To See The Most Convincing Copies Of The Roman Colosseum Around The World

The arena is the floor area of the amphitheater, and it measures some 272 feet by 157 feet (or 83 meters by 48 meters). This floor was covered with a layer of sand (the Latin word for sand is " harena " or " arena "). Little remains of the floor or arena of the Colosseum today.

Underneath the arena or flood of the Colosseum was an impressive underground structure called the hypogeum (Greek for "underground"). The hypogeum was added soon after the original construction. The hypogeum is readily visible today and is made up of a two-level subterranean network of tunnels and cages.

The tunnels and cages were used to hold animals and gladiators before the games began.

There were female gladiators called 'gladiatrix' in some Roman games until they were banned by Emperor Septimius Severus in around 200 AD.

The Colosseum had some eighty vertical shafts that provided instant access to the arena for scenery pieces and animals during the games. It had a series of elevators, pulleys, hydraulic mechanisms, and more to function.

The hypogeum was reconstructed at least 12 different times throughout its history.

There were also other tunnels in the Hypogeum intended for the Emperor and the Vestal Virgins so that they could enter the Colosseum without needing to go through the crowds. A short walk from the Colosseum, visitors can see the Temple (more accurately Shrine) of Vestal , where they kept the eternal flame of Rome.

Countless thousands of people visit the Colosseum every day, and to protect the monument, much of it is off-limits to most visitors - including the two-story Hypogeum of Rome. But it is possible to visit the Hypogeum of the Colosseum on a special tour. These tours discover the hidden maze of rooms, tunnels, and wooden elevators extending two levels under the area off limits to most.

The Colosseum Underground and Dungeons

Used for storing slaves and animals, the Hypogeum (or Underground) featured two levels and an entire network of Colosseum tunnels underground. This is where gladiators, wild animals, and the condemned awaited their gruesome fate. Led by a professional English-speaking guide, explore this behind-the-scenes area of the Colosseum, where an active archaeological dig is still going on.

As you walk around this incredible part of the Colosseum, your guide will tell stories of the likely uses of the chambers and dungeons that once hid underneath the original Arena Floor.

Arena Floor and Gladiator's Gate

Ascending to floor level, you'll step back in time as you trace the footsteps of warriors through the imposing Gate of Death (or the gladiator's gate) and out onto the reconstructed Arena Floor. This is the heart of the Colosseum and where the savage games took place.

Visit the opening to the reconstructed trap door and hear your guide describe the wild animals and battles that once fought here to the delight of ancient Roman society. It's a unique chance to imagine the fear and adrenaline that competitors must have felt so many years ago with the deafening screams of 60,000 spectators.

First and Second Levels of the Colosseum

As part of your guided tour, you'll also visit the first and second levels of the Colosseum. The views from these parts of the arena provide an excellent opportunity for photos. Your guide will tell you more about the brutal games the Colosseum spectators once witnessed, as well as the rich and influential Romans who watched from high in the stands.

All our tour guides are experts in the archaeology and history behind the historic sites we visit, including the Colosseum. Learn why "Colosseum" is just a nickname, why women didn't sit with men, and perhaps even the modern device that kept everyone protected from the sun.

Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

After your in-depth Colosseum tour, you'll talk the short walk to the Roman Forum for a guided tour with skip-the-line tickets. This was once the beating heart of ancient Rome, and you can imagine daily Roman life unfolding as you walk through the ruins of the Temple of Julius Caesar, the Arch of Titus, the Roman Senate House, and much more. Your guide will bring it all back to life with tales of Mark Antony, Cleopatra, Caesar, and more.

Sandwiched between the Roman Forum and the Circus Maximus, your final stop the historic Palatine Hill—a place we like to think of as the Beverly Hills of ancient Rome. This awe-inspiring area of towering pine trees, majestic ruins, and unparalleled views were where Romulus was said to have founded the city in 753 BC. This is also where Rome's emperors lived in opulent luxury.

Don't miss this one!

This was our first tour in Rome! Go as early as you can possibly get tickets for, this place is a zoo! Lenora "Nora" was our fantastic guide! Unfortunately we went to the Forum and Palatine Hill first, very disappointed as we were not able to explore, the tour touched on highlights and we felt rushed and cheated. Thankful that we were able to skip the line and see the Coliseum. Undergound are was phenomenal. We had a complete and very informative tour there. If the tour had started at the time we booked (hour later, had emails that changed the time) and ended at the forum, it would have been perfect.

Dimitri was an excellent guide. He was entertaining and informative. Very good tour!

Great Tour Attentive Tour Guide

We were very excited about our under the Colosseum Tour and it did not disappoint. Well organised and very informative tour. The Tour Guide booking was easy to make and support was excellent. Ella was very knowledgeable about the history of the Colosseum.

Into the Gladiators’ Lair: Guide To The Underground Colosseum

“While stands the Coliseum, Rome shall stand; When falls the Coliseum, Rome shall fall; And when Rome falls – the World.” — Lord Byron

Every visitor to Rome visits the Colosseum. But most don’t make it into the fascinating underground area.

Formally named the Flavian Amphitheater, the Colosseum has stood in Rome for almost 2,000 years. It’s the most instantly recognizable monument from the classical world.

Despite the ravages of time, the Colosseum is an incredibly well-preserved piece of Rome’s fascinating history.

colosseum hypogeum tour

On this sojourn in Rome , I opted for a Colosseum underground tour . In the tour, visitors can access areas not open to standard ticket holders.

It’s like a backstage pass into the riotous Colosseum history. Plus, I loved having an actual archaeologist as a guide.

The Colosseum embodies ancient Rome, especially its lust for violence and entertainment. Killing became a spectator sport.

On the underground tour, you’re immersed in tales of gladiators, chariots, and wild beasties. Gladiators and every type of wild animal fought to the death in physical contests in this grand public arena.

interior of the Colosseum

What Is The Colosseum?

Emperor Vespasian initiated construction of the Colosseum in 72 AD, completed by his son Titus in 80 AD, with subsequent additions by Domitian, including the hypogeum.

Built on Nero’s Golden House site, it symbolized a shift in Roman architecture towards public structures under Vespasian’s rule.

The Colosseum served as a propaganda tool, showcasing Roman power and enhancing emperor prestige, while providing mass entertainment for up to 80,000 spectators.

Inside, innovative lightweight concrete enabled grand designs, featuring Greek columns and tiered seating with strict social segregation.

Games included gladiator duels, staged hunts, and executions, evolving to mythological re-enactments, but declined with the rise of Christianity.

Emperor Honorius banned gladiator contests in 407 AD, leading to sporadic closures until 523 AD, when the Colosseum ceased operations.

In the 18th century, preservation efforts began, prompted by its significance to Christianity, though much of it was lost to earthquakes and repurposing over the centuries.

What To See In The Underground Colosseum

1. the arena floor.

Our tour began on the arena floor, also known as the “stage.” You enter the arena through the Gate of Death.

This was the gate that dead gladiators were brought through. A hallway leading to the seats was called the Vomitorium. When the games were over, the Colosseum would “vomit” out its spectators.

The games and spectacles took place in the oval shaped arena. Originally, the arena had a wooden floor, sprinkled with sand to absorb the blood.

There’s a bit of reconstructed floor to give you a sense of what it looked like. There’s also a reconstructed trap door, which was one of 36, from which the animals below were brought onto the stage.

trap door where the animals were brought up from the underground basement

You can’t help but feel small and insignificant standing on the edge of the arena floor. Before you are the massive ruins of the ancient world’s most impressive amphitheater.

You can imagine the emperor giving the thumbs up or thumbs down sign amid roaring crowds. Our guide told us that this did happen on occasion.

But, unlike in the movie Gladiator , the crowds likely didn’t have much say in thumb’s direction.

Nor did gladiators greet the emperor with the legendary phrase “We who are about to die salute you.”

the exposed hypogeum of the Colosseum

2. The Basement, or Hypogeum, of the Colosseum

Next, we headed to the area which gives the tour its name – the Colosseum’s underground basement, the hypogeum.

Until the 19th century, the hypogeum was buried under 40 feet of earth, its existence obliterated.

In 1813 and 1874, attempted archaeological excavations were thwarted by flooding groundwater. Finally, as part of Benito Mussolini’s glorification of classical Rome, workers excavated and cleared the hypogeum.

The hypogeum was the underground staging area for the games. It was an elaborate network of tunnels, cages, and holding rooms beneath the arena floor. Slaves, prisoners, animals, and gladiators were kept there before their “performances.”

colosseum hypogeum tour

Set pieces and scenes for a performance were also stored there too. Man made machines — ramps, cranes, and lifts — hoisted them up to the arena floor.

With the arena floor long gone, most of the hypogeum is completely exposed. Grass grows where tunnels and cages once were. However, much of the underground structure around the outer rim of the arena is fairy well preserved. That’s the part you’ll tour.

Exploring this area gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the intense preparation that went into producing the public spectacles.

You’ll stroll down the same central corridor that the gladiators once strode. You can see canals that were used to launch mock sea battles when the Colosseum was flooded and animal cages.

the central corridor where the gladiators strode

Parts of hypogeum are reconstructed, like the lifts and elevator shafts that once took the animals and gladiators up to the arena level, to make it easier to imagine how things operated down here.

It’s dark, but not nearly as black as it would’ve been 2,000 years ago when the arena floor was intact.

The hypogeum definitely wasn’t glamorous. It was dark and smelly, with little air circulation. According to the Smithsonian , the hypogeum:

was as hot as a boiler room in the summer, humid and cold in winter, and filled all year round with strong smells, from the smoke, the sweating workmen packed in the narrow corridors, the reek of the wild animals … The noise was overwhelming — creaking machinery, people shouting and animals growling, the signals made by organs, horns or drums to coordinate the complex series of tasks people had to carry out, and, of course, the din of the fighting going on just overhead, with the roaring crowd.

staircase used by slaves

3. The Third Ring

The final stop on the Colosseum Underground Tour is the nosebleed seats.

After passing through a gated area on the second level of the Colosseum, you arrive at the Third Ring located at the top of the amphitheater. It’s the highest part of this UNESCO site.

This upper level provides a wide view of the Colosseum and the ruins in the Forum and Palatine Hill.

This is also one of the few spots where you can still see pieces of the original outer walls of the Colosseum. The rest were taken and sold after the fall of Rome.

How To Book An Underground Colosseum Tour

The cheapest way to get an underground ticket is to book directly with the Colosseum. You’ll need to purchase two different tickets – a standard ticket (€16) and an underground tour ticket (€9). You can do this online here .

There’s a €2 online booking fee per ticket. But it’s worth it to secure your preferred tour time and avoid the long ticket lines.

You can’t visit the Colosseum anymore without a reservation. If you purchase your ticket at the onsite ticket office, your ticket is only good for the same day.

Alternatively, you can book a curated underground tour with a private tour company in Rome, which is what I did.

Though the tours are more expensive, you’ll skip the line and get a knowledgable tour guide.

Colosseum Tour: Third tier, Hypogeum, Porta Libitinaria - Rome

Colosseum Tour: Third tier, Hypogeum, Porta Libitinaria. The third tier of the stands has been opened, after the first session of restoration, which gives us back almost the full perception of the landmark. From there visitors enjoy an extraordinary view over the inner space of the Coliseum and the whole city of Rome. The ability to access to the upper ring is essential to understand the relationship between the Coliseum and the wide monumental area of the Forum, the other monuments of imperial Rome as well as the whole urban network. The other vast space made available to visitors once again is the underground level, which will be accessed from the section that includes the Porta Libitinaria, that was also restored. The descent into the hypogeum will allow visitors to add a fundamental part of the site to the visit, as it was here where the wild beasts, that were caught from farthest corners of the Empire, were brought and the gladiators stood and prepared for combat in the arena. Duration: about 1:30h. Once the tour is over, you can visit on your own the Palatine and the Roman Forum with the same voucher

The entry to the third ring and to the hypogeum is allowed only to groups accompanied by an authorized tour guide .

The reservation is required and includes the admission fee and the group guided tour.

Colosseum Underground History

The underground area of the Colosseum, known as the hypogeum, played a crucial role in the functioning of the ancient amphitheater. Here’s a brief history of the Colosseum Underground:

Construction and Design: The construction of the Colosseum, originally called the Flavian Amphitheatre, began in 72 AD under the emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD during the reign of his son, Titus. The underground complex was an integral part of the original design. It consisted of a network of tunnels, chambers, and corridors beneath the arena floor.

Function and Purpose: The underground area served multiple purposes. It housed the mechanisms and infrastructure necessary for staging the spectacles held in the Colosseum. This included storage rooms for props, equipment, and gladiatorial gear, as well as workshops for craftsmen. It also contained cages and cells for holding animals and prisoners before their appearances in the arena.

Elevators and Trapdoors: The hypogeum featured a series of elevators and trapdoors that facilitated the movement of gladiators, animals, and stage props between the underground chambers and the arena floor. These mechanical devices allowed for dramatic entrances and surprise appearances during the spectacles.

Complex Infrastructure: The underground area of the Colosseum had a complex system of corridors and tunnels that provided access to different parts of the amphitheater. This intricate network allowed for the smooth flow of people, animals, and objects behind the scenes during the events.

Later Modifications: Over the centuries, the underground area underwent modifications and changes. In the medieval period, the Colosseum was transformed into a fortress, and parts of the hypogeum were repurposed as housing and workshops. Later restoration efforts aimed to excavate and restore the underground complex to its original state, allowing visitors to experience the architectural and functional aspects of the ancient structure.

Today, visitors to the Colosseum can explore the underground chambers and tunnels as part of specific guided tours. These tours provide insights into the fascinating history and mechanics of the ancient amphitheater, offering a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes workings of the gladiatorial games and other spectacles held at the Colosseum.

Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide, you'll have the opportunity to delve into the gory history of the gladiators while exploring the tunnels of the Colosseum underground and stepping out onto the famed arena floor.

While admiring the awe-inspiring architecture of the Colosseum, which has withstood the test of time for almost two millennia, your intimate group will be captivated by your guide's explanation of the truth behind the stadium and the games that once took place here—which isn't quite like what you might have seen in movies!

The cherry on top of your Colosseum underground tour comes as you step away from the crowds in the general access areas and make your way to the underground tunnels beneath the arena. Walk in the footsteps of gladiators who waited here before battle and hear stories about their real lives as you explore the underbelly of one of history's most spectacular stadiums. Our parent company, the Hornblower Group, worked with the Colosseum Archaeological Park to bring this experience to life, and we're so excited to share it with you as part of this once-in-a-lifetime tour.

As part of your experience, you'll explore one of the most incredible recent additions to the Colosseum: a brand-new exhibition that brings ancient Rome's most iconic figures to life. Learn the story of the Temple of the Vestal Virgins, where a special cult of women kept Rome’s sacred flame alive. Your guide will share captivating tales of the ancient empire, full of love, betrayal, and larger-than-life characters (Caesar, Cleopatra and Mark Antony to name a few). They'll even come prepared with great visual aids and reconstructions to show you how it all would have looked 2,000 years ago.

Finally, at the Palatine Hill, you’ll discover the origins of ancient Rome. Legend has it that this is the spot where Remus and Romulus were found by the she-wolf and where they battled to decide who would have the privilege of building their own town. Apr 11, 2024

we booked the morning tour to help avoid crowds and our tour was moved from 815 to 1215. We enjoyed the tour but the time in the colosseum felt slightly rushed. It was very helpful to have someone guide around the Roman forum. Spent a lot of time on Palentine hill that didn’t seem necessary. Tour went almost an hour over. Guide was knowledgable but wasn’t overly engaging. I understand the tickets would be difficult but it would have been nice to be left in the colosseum rather than the Roman forum so we could go to the gift shop and take more photos.

Visiting the Underground of the Colosseum

Colosseum’s underground guided tour benefits.

Booking a guided tour of the Colosseum's underground provides visitors with exclusive access to areas normally restricted to the general public as well as a rich historical context that elevates the experience beyond a simple walkthrough. Knowledgeable guides, often with a background in history or archaeology, narrate the compelling stories of what unfolded in these ancient spaces.

Accessibility at the Colosseum’s Underground

The underground levels are not wheelchair accessible due to their structure including stairs and steps. Those with mobility impairments should contact the tour operator before booking to discuss if accommodations can be made.

Exclusive Colosseum Underground Areas

The underground circuit of the Colosseum reveals the dungeons where animals and gladiators awaited their fate, and the complex tunnels where intricate machinery once hoisted them into the arena floor.

The exclusive itinerary of an Underground Colosseum guided tour often includes access through the Gladiator's Gate, a dramatic entrance leading directly to the arena, where combatants once entered to roaring crowds. Visitors will also see the remnants of the elevator systems, a testament to Roman engineering prowess. Additionally, some tours offer the rare chance to stand at the Gate of Death, the exit through which the fallen were carried away.

The depth of detail provided by the expert guide makes it clear why this access is such a privilege, while the panoramic views from various vantage points forge an indelible connection with ancient Rome.

Where is the Colosseum located?

The address of the Colosseum is Piazza del Colosseo, 1, in Rome, Italy . For those travelling by car, the Colosseum’s GPS coordinates are 41.8902° N, 12.4922° E . If you’re in Rome and want to find out how to go to the Colosseum use the following Google Map to find the best route from your current location.

How to get to the Colosseum

The Colosseum is very well serviced by Rome’s extensive public transport network. It can be reached by subway, multiple bus lines, and by tram. Below is a list of all public transport options to go to the Colosseum from practically anywhere in Rome.

  • Metro B line, get off at the Colosseum metro stop.
  • Metro A line, get off at Manzoni stop, then switch to the number 3 tram line going south.
  • Bus lines 60, 75, 85, 87, 271, 571, 175, 186, 810, 850, C3, and 117.
  • Tramway line 3.

If you don’t want to take public transport you can also take a taxi, just make sure that it is an official, licensed cab.

You’ll recognize them because they have the “TAXI” sign on the roof of the vehicle, are all white, and they have the Commune di Roma logo on the side.

Also make sure your cab has a meter, and that the driver turns it on when you get in, otherwise you could end up paying much more than you should.

Things to see near the Colosseum

The Colosseum is surrounded by other beautiful and famous monuments that are well worth viewing . The most important ones are:

  • The Arch of Constantine, a triumphalist arch dedicated to the Emperor of the same name. It sits right next to the Colosseum and doesn’t require a ticket.
  • The Domus Aurea , the remains of the grand palace emperor Nero built himself in 68 AD. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour (affiliate link if this is available?)
  • The Roman Circus, aka the Circus Maximus , the ground-level remains of an ancient chariot racing stadium. It is said that it could seat 150,000 spectators during the Empire’s heyday. It is best viewed from the Palatine Hill.
  • The Palatine Hill, which houses the archeological remains of many ancient Roman palaces and temples and offers a great view of the surrounding area. You can visit it with the same ticket as the Colosseum.
  • The Roman Forum, or Foro Romano , which used to be the center of Rome itself. A plaza where trade, politics, parades, and entertainment were conducted. You can visit and view its many archaeological remains with the same ticket as the Colosseum.

Tips and things you should know for your visit

Below are some tips and other important information you should take into account when visiting the Colosseum.

Like all major tourist attractions, the Colosseum’s security is quite stringent to keep visitors safe. Visitors are not allowed to enter the monument with large bags, suitcases, or backpacks.

If you are carrying your travel luggage you will be denied entry. Small and medium-sized bags are ok, but they will be screened by security personnel and go through a metal detector.

Italian military police, the Carabinieri, patrolling on horseback near the Colosseum

Skipping the line

If you have pre-booked your tickets you will get to skip the ticket line , but will still have to wait to go through security. Depending on the day and the time of year security can take anywhere from 10 minutes to over 60 minutes. Because of this, it is recommended you budget extra time for your visit.

A good way to avoid this problem altogether is to go early in the morning. The Colosseum opens to visitors at 8.30 am. If you arrive early you will spend much less time waiting and you will also avoid the intense heat of the Roman summer. Another way to skip the lines is to join a guided tour, find out more on our tours of the Colosseum page (link).

Is the Colosseum accessible for disabled people?

Yes, the Colosseum is accessible to disabled people. Its main entrance has no stairs, the inside is mostly flat save a few areas because of the old cobblestones, and there is an elevator that takes visitors to the upper floor.

Parking near the Colosseum

Regarding parking near the Colosseum — the most important advice for any visitor thinking of driving in Rome is don’t do it . Driving and finding parking spaces in the center of the city is very difficult if you don’t know your way around.

You’ll save money, time, and stress if you stick to public transport. Pickpockets can be a thing, but if you’re careful and mindful of your belongings you won’t have a problem.

Does the Colosseum have a dress code?

The Colosseum doesn’t have a dress code, but in exploring it you’ll be climbing a lot of stairs so make sure to wear comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes. The same can be said of Rome as a whole. Shorts, leggings, hoodies… all are fine.

If you explore the surrounding area you may also spend some time in the sun, so don’t forget to bring sunscreen.

Is the Colosseum child friendly?

Yes, but you’ll need to do a little extra planning. If you’re visiting during the hottest months of the year go early in the morning to escape the heat. Joining a guided tour can also help with dodging the lines to minimize waiting time. Beyond that, it depends on your child. If he/she is interested in ancient archaeological ruins and in hearing stories about brave Roman gladiators that fought in the arena the Colosseum can be quite an enjoyable experience.

What is the best way to see the Colosseum?

The best time to visit the Colosseum is early in the morning before large crowds form, and the best days are during the week, as it will usually be less crowded than on the weekends. However, if you’re willing to spend a little more, a night time tour (link) is probably the most interesting way to visit. Keep in mind that the night tour does not include a combined ticket for the Roman Forum and the palatine hill as a normal Colosseum ticket would, so if you want to see those monuments too you’ll have to visit them separately.

What you’ll See Along the Way

colosseum hypogeum tour

The Colosseum was built under the Flavian Dynasty. Emperor Vespasian began its construction in 72 AD, and it was completed under his son Titus in 80 AD. The 'Flavian Amphitheater' was a gift to the Roman people, but was also a powerful tool for imperial propaganda.

colosseum hypogeum tour

The subterranean network of tunnels, called the hypogeum, seem straight out of a scene from 'The Gladiator'. Explore the labyrinth of cages which held exotic animals from all over the Roman Empire as well as the 80 vertical shafts that lifted both animals and gladiators to the arena floor.

colosseum hypogeum tour

The Arena Floor was the stage for a wide range of Ancient Roman 'entertainment'. Barbaric wild animal hunts and brutal gladiatorial combat enthralled the throngs of bloodthirsty spectators. This was the second hottest show in town after the chariot races at the Circus Maximus.

The Colosseum is also home to some spectacular views. After you're finished exploring the Underground and Arena Floor, follow your guide up to the 2nd Ring to see how the patrician and knightly classes watched the games. Photo-ops abound, and be sure not to miss the vista from the Valdier Terrace.

The Arch of Constantine was built in 315 AD to celebrate Emperor Constantine’s victory over Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. Constantine is depicted forcing Maxentius and his troops into the Tiber. It was a major turning point in Western Civilization, as Constantine fought under the aegis of Christianity.

The ruins and architectural feats of the Roman Forum, Ancient Rome’s beating heart, dazzle and amaze even today. Among the remains of one of the world's most significant archaeological sites, you'll be mesmerized by its sheer enormity. From grand triumphal arches to basilicas and remnants of temples, a vivid portrait of ancient life starts emerges.

“History is truly the witness of times past, the light of truth, the life of memory, the teacher of life, the messenger of antiquity; whose voice, but the orator's, can entrust her to immortality?” So said Cicero (106-43 BC), one of the ancient city’s leading orators, philosophers and politicians, perhaps from the Temple of Castor and Pollux.

colosseum hypogeum tour

This circular temple held one of the most precious treasures in Ancient Rome – 'the sacred flame'. It was tended by a mysterious cult of priestesses known as the Vestal Virgins, whose primary job was to make sure the flame never went out. The prestigious vestal position came with a vow to 30 years of service, all of which had to be served in chastity.

colosseum hypogeum tour

The Temple of Antoninus and Faustina is one of the few nearly fully-preserved edifices in the Roman Forum. It was dedicated to Emperor Antonius Pius and his wife, Faustina, both deified after their deaths at the order of Marcus Aurelius in 161 AD. During the Middle Ages the beautiful edifice was transformed into a church called San Lorenzo in Miranda.

Built in honor of Emperor Titus and his victory over Judea in 70 AD, where he put down an uprising against Roman occupation. After the fall of Masada, Titus captured Jerusalem, destroying the Temple and deporting locals to Rome as slaves. Some scolars say it even depicts the Ark of the Covenant, and famous golden menorah brought to Rome as spoils.

Colosseum Underground, Arena Floor & 2nd Ring

Make your Colosseum Underground an exclusive one on this deluxe private tour of Rome’s famous Flavian Amphitheater. Skip the crowds of people lining up for general admission, and head to the “backdoor” of the world’s most iconic arena. Here you’ll find yourself face-to-face with the “gladiator’s gate”, or better the actual exit point for these ancient athletes if they didn’t survive the combat. Follow in the footsteps of history as your private guide leads you to areas of the Colosseum that are totally off-limits to those with only standard tickets. This means that compared to the over 6 million visitors that visit the monument each year, you’ll only have to share them with a few other people, a sensation made even more intimate by your guide’s focus on you alone for the entirety of the tour.

What our Customers say...

Amazing tour with Mario, we enjoyed it! The Arena where the gladiator walked is breathtaking.”

Colosseum tour with underground - Fabulous!

Today’s tour was a 5 star! First off the meeting place was easy to locate and the company representative took care of us immediately. Carlotta took a few minutes to introduce herself and to greet each member of our 12- person group personally which immediately created a feeling of belonging. Carlotta had the difficult task of advising the group that part of the Colosseum would not be accessible due to a special event. She assured the guests that she would make up for the missed visit by prolonging other parts of our tour. All in all, a wonderful visit with a fabulous guide who was knowledgeable, professional and who knew how to cater to the needs of her clients.”

Tour of the Colosseum Underground, perfect!

We had a private colosseum underground tour on October 12th. The tour guide, Manuela was very knowledgeable and engaging! Strongly recommended!”

Tour at the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum!

We had an amazing experience visiting Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum with our tour guide Carlotta. She was very informative, fun and showed us all the hidden details. We recommend this tour 100%! We experienced this ancient part of Rome at the best possible way!”

Best Colosseum Tour

A fabulous tour given by Marina! Thoroughly knowledgeable regarding the subject matter. Not a boring minute. I am a history buff and consider myself somewhat knowledgeable. Our tour guide added to my knowledge and could answer every question that our small group had. It was a delightful experience that I would recommend to anyone touring Rome. One suggestion: Go in the off season like I did to avoid the crowds and the heat! Temperature was in the mid to upper 30's.

Your tour will begin as you approach the Colosseum, exploring its architecture and discovering why the Emperor Vespasian took the unusual step of building an amphitheater within the city walls. With LivTours, you won’t have to wait in line for tickets, just a quick security check before you are standing inside the Colosseum, under the arches where spectators used to enter to experience the most brutal of entertainments.

You’ll understand what it was like for the gladiators underground in the semi-darkness, surrounded by terrified animals, waiting to be hoisted up to stand in front of the crowds. From the Arena Floor, you’ll have an incredible view of the entire amphitheater, as the gladiators did when they walked through the Gladiator Gate to the deafening roar of 50,000 cheering spectators.

And what about the people who came to watch the games at the Colosseum? In the part of the Colosseum open to the general public, you’ll visit the first tier and look down onto the arena, get your first glimpse of the Forum, and visit the Imperial box.

Outside, you’ll pass the Arch of Constantine and skip the line into the Roman Forum. With stories that educate and entertain, your guide will bring the complexity of more than 2000 years of history to life. You will see the most famous sites of the Forum, including the Arch of Titus, the Temple of the Vestal Virgins and the spot where Julius Caesar was cremated.

The guided tour of the Colosseum, including the hypogeum, was fascinating. Our guide Rebecca was both very knowledgeable and very pleasant and friendly, and her informed commentary enhanced the experience. It is not a cheap tour, but it was worth paying a higher price to be in a private group of just five people (maximum six) rather than following a red flag in a party of thirty or more. Particularly helpful was the use of radio receivers with an earpiece, enabling us to hear Rebecca chatting away without her having to shout over other people, and also enabling us to now and then disengage from the group by a few metres in order to take photos without missing any of the commentary. Email communications with LivTours before the day were good - although their website ought to make it clear that the Colosseum ticket also provides entry to the Forum without extra charge (ask the guide for the ticket on the day). Overall, highly recommended.

Best tour while in Rome

We booked the Colosseum and Forum tour with access to underground colosseum in August 2022. Barbara was our guide in a small group of 6 and was amazing! It was the best tour we had taken while staying in Rome, she was very knowledgeable about the Ancient city and was so nice in helping us stay hydrated and cool in the shade during the summer heat. I would recommend seeing the underground and will book again with Liv Tours and Barbara.

Great guide

We booked the Colosseum and Ancient Rome tour with LivTours. Ribal, our guide, was very knowledgeable and was a great guide who explained things really well. We also did the underground option which is a MUST!!! Small group which made things much more personal. Thankyou LivTours

Amazing tour

Dennis, our guide on the Colosseum tour, was incredible! His tour was the highlight of my trip! He was so detailed and made sure to answer any questions we had. He took his time to make sure we saw everything we wanted to see. I would highly recommend him! I would absolutely book another tour with Dennis and with LivTours.

Amazing experience

Our tour of the Colosseum and The Forum was truly amazing. What made our tour was our incredible guide Sabrina. She was highly knowledge and so enthusiastic about all aspects of the tour. Having the small group of only 6 people is a must. It gives a personal touch and learn so much more. Thank you for an amazing experience .

Hypogeum of Colosseum

colosseum hypogeum tour

Hypogeum is the substructure of the Colosseum. It was built approximately 10 years after the inauguration of the Colosseum by Domitian. Because the Colosseum had housed naval battles   before, it was built later.

Underground of the Colosseum

Underground of the Colosseum, the oval amphitheater used for gladiatorial contests and battles

The structure was built in masonry and included a system of tunnels with two major corridors. There were rooms without windows and air circulation which made the work of hundreds of slaves more challenging. the slaves were the staff that kept the hungry wild animals there lifted them with winches to the arena.

The archways inside the Colosseum, Rome

The archways inside the Colosseum, Rome

The animals weren’t the only ones who fought for their lives. There were also rooms for gladiators. The Ludus Magnus , a door closed now was connected to the gladiator barracks. They were trained there and prepared for the flights. Then they would enter from ‘Porta Triumphalis’ gate to the arena with wooden elevators. They also got medical treatment after the fights since they didn’t want them all to die each time.

The Best Rome Colosseum Tours

As the most enduring symbol of the Roman Empire and one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the Colosseum receives more than 6 million visitors per year, so it's not easy to escape the crowds. A visit is worth it, though, if you want to see the world's largest amphitheater – once known as the Flavian Amphitheater – and try to imagine what it would have been like 2,000 years ago.

A standard ticket to the Colosseum also includes access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, so many (but not all) tours also include those ancient sites. Inside the ancient complex, there is very little signage explaining what you're looking at. A good guide will not only get you skip-the-line access but also bring these incredible places to life. Keep in mind that most Colosseum tours only give you access to the arena floor and upper level. If you want to visit the underground hypogeum, you need to make sure it's included in the tour.

Standout perk: Engaging guides speak several languages.

Groups consist of up to 30 people, and tourgoers are given headsets so they can better hear and follow the guide. The tour meets at Largo Gaetana Agnesi on the hill overlooking the Colosseum about 30 minutes before the official entry time to get everyone checked in and set up with headsets. The guide then leads participants into the Colosseum and up to the second level, where there's a chance to stop and take photos. On the way back down, there's another photo-op at the arena level before the guide leads the group over to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum.

Crown Tours also offers guided tours of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter's Basilica, as well as the Borghese Gallery, Pantheon and other sites.

Standout perk: Virtual reality headsets show what the ancient sites would have looked like.

Recent tourgoers praise the guides on this tour for bringing the facts and stories about ancient Rome to life. Along with the confirmation email, participants receive an invitation to download an app. During the tour, the guide gives everyone a cardboard virtual reality headset that works with the app and shows a reconstruction of the Colosseum and the surrounding valley. After visiting the Colosseum, the tour continues to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, where the virtual reality headsets show you a reconstruction of the Circus Maximus and the structures in the Roman Forum. At all the sites, you get skip-the-line access.

These semiprivate tours are guaranteed to have no more than six people, making them a more personalized experience than other group tours. However, because the tours are small, the guides don't use headsets, and some participants noted that it can be difficult to hear the guide over the noise in the Colosseum.

Local tip: You can get some great photos from the upper level, especially if you stand at the apex of the oval.
