For the duration of his criminal trial, Donald J. Trump has moved back into the penthouse of Trump Tower at the corner of 5th Avenue and 56th Street. With the owner and former president back in residence, you might think they’d spruce up the abutting commercial and retail space. You’d be wrong. The Daily Beast dropped in earlier this week for a tour of the “ crown jewel of The Trump Organization.”

FIFTH AVENUE ENTRANCE

Metal barriers take up half the sidewalk and serve two purposes: (1) to hold back crowds; and (2) to force people to cross the avenue if they want a selfie of themselves giving the finger to Trump Tower.

At least four police officers patrol the residential entrance on 56th street, but security to enter the public space is lax. During Trump’s presidency, the building required a thorough bag check by armed officers. Now a small sign near the entrance reads, “All bags are subject to search by security personnel.”

The Trump Organization website brags, “One of the most notable features of Trump Tower is the breath-taking 60-foot waterfall embellishing the eastern wall of the building.”

Today, it’s notable that there’s no water in the waterfall. And a waterfall without water is just a wall. Here’s a shot from the second story looking down:

So much has changed in the past eight years since Trump called the tower “home.” Ivanka’s eponymous fine jewelry store is gone. And remember the Currency Exchange that served as the backdrop to the iconic moment that Melania and Trump stepped on the escalator?

That’s gone, too.

But let’s not pine for what is lost. Let’s see what’s there…

GROUND LEVEL

A quick glance from the escalator reveals a familiar figure sitting in the café area.

A closer examination clarifies that it’s just a Trump cosplayer taking a break.

Currently under construction, the Trump Café will “most likely open the second week of May,” said an elderly security guard. Then he wiggled his hand in a “give or take” gesture, suggesting not even he believes that will happen.

Trying to help, the guard pointed me to Trump Sweets which offers the full café menu.

At the counter stood a woman in a glittery silver ensemble. She seemed out of place in New York, where people tend to dress more like the woman to her left. Perhaps the Silver Lady slipped through a portal that connects Mar-a-Lago and Trump Tower… along with this guy in the purple jacket and sunglasses.

Around the corner from Trump Sweets is the Trump Tower gift shop, whose signage could use some updating. (Note: 2020 was not a great year for Trump.)

Inside the store is a jumble of Trump-related products.

I asked the clerk to name the store’s most popular gift item. He grabbed a deck of $15 Trump Presidential Playing cards. “We sold 7,000 decks,” he said.

Then he fanned a worn deck and recited his worn pitch: “Trump is the king. Melania and Ivanka are the queens. And most importantly, look who is the joker…”

In the more upscale golf shop, there were $5 Trump-embossed gold chocolate bars and a single copy of Don Jr’s book Triggered for sale. There’s no way to know if Don Jr. slipped the book in there himself.

SECOND FLOOR

Starbucks departed in spring 2022 and was recently replaced by “Nerolab Italian Food Zone.” The Rome-based chain’s tagline is “Nerolab, WHY NOT!” But a better tagline would be: “It’s better to be food-zoned than friend-zoned.” It’s right there. Why not!

OUTDOOR TERRACES

Both public terraces appear to be permanently closed to the public. The lack of public outdoor spaces may be in violation of a deal with the city which traded additional square footage for these gardens. In the smaller exterior space, what’s visible through the window looks sparse and untended. Maybe the RNC could pay for a few Trump gardeners along with all those lawyers.

The large glass doors which once opened up to a second, grander terrace are now mirrored over and locked. This is not the first time that shiny has replaced transparency in Trumpworld.

On Tuesday, Trump posted “It was my great honor to welcome former Japanese Prime Minister Tarō Asō —at Trump Tower this evening!” and attached this photo :

The backdrop of the marble and brass confers class to the image. Meanwhile, that same day, in another part of Trump Tower, even marble and brass couldn’t hide the trash.

Cedar Point National Wildlife Refuge - Spring Migration Bus Tours

Take the Blue Goose Bus to Cedar Point National Wildlife Refuge to experience the wonders of Spring migration in northwest Ohio. Cedar Point NWR is closed to the public, except for a fishing and paddling access located at the end of Yondota Road in Oregon, Ohio from May 1 – August 31. Cedar Point NWR is approximately 2,616 acres of wetlands and is the largest remaining contiguous wetlands in the western basin of Lake Erie. The refuge includes rare cottonwood dune forest communities located next to Lake Erie which provide critical habitat for migrating songbirds. Tours leave the visitor center at Ottawa NWR (14000 West State Route 2, Oak Harbor, Ohio) at 7 a.m. and return at 11 a.m. Registration opens Thursday, April 4 th at 10:30 a.m. Call 419-313-3236 to register. Bus tours are free. Only one bus tour per group is allowed so that we can accommodate as many visitors as possible.

Bringing some of the biggest artists together for a three-day festival in Northern California, BottleRock Napa Valley celebrates its 11th year as it kicks off this May. Though the music festival begins this month and tickets are going quickly, there are still a few avenues for how to buy Bottlerock Napa Valley 2024 tickets.

The 2024 BottleRock Napa Valley festival begins on Friday, May 24, and ends on Sunday, May 26. Though the festival takes place over Memorial Day Weekend, there won't be any shows on Monday's holiday. Alongside numerous big names headlining the festival, BottleRock Napa Valley will feature plenty of food, beer, and, of course, wines from the area's nearby vineyards.

Over the past decade, artists like OutKast, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Cage the Elephant, Stevie Wonder, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Killers, and Miley Cyrus have served as headliners for BottleRock Napa Valley. For the 2024 festival, the big headliners include Stevie Nicks, Pearl Jam, Ed Sheeran, and Megan Thee Stallion.

BottleRock Napa Valley 2024 schedule

Four different types of tickets can be purchased for the three dates of BottleRock Napa Valley's festival. The options include one-day passes for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday or a three-day pass that grants access for each day of the festival.

The time listed in PT is when the first shows start each day.

How to buy tickets for BottleRock Napa Valley 2024 music festival

Since BottleRock Napa Valley 2024 tickets went on sale in January, the number of remaining original tickets is extremely limited. However, you can still buy original tickets to the festival through the BottleRock Front Gate Tickets website .

Unfortunately, the original tickets for Saturday and Sunday General Admission day passes, all one-day VIP passes, three-day General Admission tickets, three-day VIP passes, three-day Skydeck passes, and three-day Platinum tickets are sold out. However, the BottleRock website still has some original General Admission tickets for Friday-only passes.

You can also buy tickets to BottleRock Napa Valley 2024 through verified resale vendors such as StubHub and Vivid Seats . With so many original ticket options already sold out, resale ticket sites are your best chance to get single-day Saturday and Sunday tickets, three-day passes, or VIP tickets to the 2024 music festival.

Very few original BottleRock Napa Valley 2024 tickets remain, which means there's only one price available on the festival's site. With only Friday General Admission passes available, the cheapest (and only) cost of original tickets is $233, including fees, before taxes.

On the other hand, verified resale ticket prices on StubHub and Vivid Seats are less expensive than original passes and have more variety in ticket types. For general admission passes to BottleRock on Friday, the cheapest price on StubHub is $186 or $174 on Vivid Seats. Meanwhile, the least expensive Saturday-only passes are $160 on StubHub or $173 on Vivid Seats, with Sunday-only tickets similarly being $191 on the former or $207 on the latter.

On verified resale sites, three-day passes aren't much more expensive than the original single-day passes that are still available. StubHub's cheapest General Admission three-day passes begin at $250, while Vivid Seats' start at $244. Of course, prices go up for VIP three-day passes for BottleRock 2024 on the sites, which begin at $1574 on StubHub and $1707 on Vivid Seats. The prices increase exponentially for each VIP pass tier, such as Skydeck, Marriott VIP Suite, The Suites, and Platinum.

If there’s one thing Sydney Sweeney’s latest thriller, Immaculate , taught us, it’s this: for better or worse, things aren’t always as they seem. In the film, Sweeney plays a nun in an Italian convent that secretly harbors something sinister. On Thursday, to attend a press event for her film, she channeled her character’s black robe — and added an element of surprise.

Unlike the movie’s menacing reveal, Sweeney’s was of the sartorial variety and was utterly fashion-forward. At first glance, her ensemble looked like your typical little black dress — and a rather modest one at that. But a slight turn to the side revealed a risqué surprise that would flout any convent’s dress code.

Sweeney has been a Miu Miu ambassador since 2022 , fronting some of the brand’s buzziest campaigns. Her latest didn’t disappoint.

The actor was in Mexico on Thursday, May 2, for an Immaculate press conference. While Sweeney is known for her daring fashion choices, her fitted LBD initially seemed uncharacteristically conservative. With a boat neck and a knee-length hemline, she easily could’ve worn it to church.

That’s why the historical organization Remembering Black Dallas created a new series of tours — funded partially through a grant from the city's Office of Arts and Culture — highlighting these and other areas in modern-day Dallas County that were once hubs for the Black community.

“Our main focus is to draw light on the history and of the African American freedom towns, communities and those individuals that others may not know anything about,” said Deborah Hopes, the president of Remembering Black Dallas.

Hopes, a South Dallas native, named the venture the Ukunika Bus and Walking Tour after the Zulu word meaning “to give back.” The monthly tours were an idea first put forward by RBD founder George Keaton, and it was one Hopes wanted to keep alive. They both had the benefit of living through some of that history or were taught stories of a time before them.

“We have others that are from that community, or they had grandparents or relatives that lived in those communities that shared stories,” Hopes said.

She said RBD didn’t start the tours out of fear of forgetting the community’s history, but rather as a chance to relive old memories. She believes this is the first step to recognizing Black history while her peers are still around to educate others.

“History in itself doesn't change. History in itself remains the same,” she said. “But if you don't know it, then you are not privy to it.”

Unforgettable history

The first of the Ukunika bus tours took attendees around South Dallas, focusing on women’s history and how the civil rights movement affected the area. It highlighted American activists like Julia C. Frazier, Pearl C. Anderson and Juanita J. Craft, whose house — which hosted Martin Luther King. Jr and Lyndon B. Johnson — was among the stops.

“I think Dallas can be a very ahistoric place,” said Phaedra Gwyn, who grew up in the city but said she had no idea the cultural significance the neighborhood carried. “I was really happy to learn more about the civil rights movement in Dallas and Black people's contributions.”

Another attendee, Courtney Simmons, was raised in Dallas and attended Lincoln High School. She brought her daughters on the tour so they could see how her neighborhood has changed, and how it’s preserved its culture.

“The infiltration of the city and how it just kind of [reduced] the Black community down and how it got a little disenfranchised, but there's still efforts going on today to keep those visions alive,” Simmons said.

Others grew up in the city and had no idea of the cultural significance these neighborhoods carried.

Another tour covered the area known today as North Dallas, which was established as a Freedmen’s Town in the Reconstruction period after the Civil War.

The area associated with North Park, the Galleria and the former Valley View Mall was once home to Dallas’s oldest and most prominent Black landowners, including Anderson Bonner, Henry Keller and George Coit.

“I traveled up and down Coit Road and didn't realize it was named after a Black person,” said RBD member Karl Lewis. “And I doubt very few people realize that.”

Passengers got a chance to meet several notable Dallas natives who have seen the city change firsthand.

Patricia Price Hicks, who is on the Dallas County Historical Commission, shared her experience growing up in Hamilton Park, an area named after prominent landowner Richard Theodore Hamilton.

“This was unheard of because there was no Black community per se,” Hicks said.

The group explored the hidden White Rock Cemetery Garden of Memories, where they were met by Glen Bonner — one of Anderson’s descendants.

“This was the first known interracial cemetery in North Dallas, North Texas area, actually,” Bonner said.

Hearing about forgotten history brought up a lot of emotions for some attendees. Sicily Whetstone is a grad student who attended the tour for a school project. She said she sees the tour as a form of reparations for Black Dallas that also educates the public.

“Those people have [been] lost in history,” she said. “So, I'm really thinking the reparations really need to go deep, starting maybe in the graveyards and the histories of those.”

She’s grateful for organizations like RBD that are dedicated to praising this history, but she said she’d like to see more support from the city of Dallas.

“This is something that we should sell as our city that this is something that we need to repair,” Whetstone said. “And it should be in our local history books in our schools.”

RBD president Deborah Hopes said that’s one of the aims of the tours.

“What I found is that they're getting these ‘wow’ moments like, 'wow, I didn't know that,’” she said. “I think that is strengthening the desire to do more and want to know more and to learn more about communities in themselves.”

Embracing the past

Remembering Black Dallas required all hands on-deck to be able to execute a project as big as the Ukunika bus tours — starting with the amount of research and networking that went into organizing them.

The organization has volunteers from all over Dallas who were curious to learn more about the history of the land they live on today. They believe it brings a new perspective to what should be researched further and highlighted.

“Everybody can embrace this history because it helps you understand the place that you are calling home,” volunteer tour guide Sharron Conrad said. “By understanding the people and the stories that make up these communities.”

Some, like Larry Offut, are trying to make up for the history they were naïve to. Offut is one of several members of RBD who's white and lived through the civil rights movement. He said the tours are bringing awareness to a past that many people ignored.

“It really was striking to me to read those things and understand that I had lived them as a child and as a young adult,” Offutt said. “…It never occurred to me there was any trauma.”

While RBD has worked to document some of the worst events in Dallas’ past by installing markers around the city memorializing lynching victims, the tours show that there’s much more to the area’s Black history than trauma.

“What I would like others to know is that we didn't only just exist and survive,” the organization’s financial secretary Reginald Small said. “We actually thrived in our communities even with the oppression. We actually thrived, and it's so documented.”

Remembering Black Dallas offers the Ukunika Bus and Walking Tours once a month through August. Some areas they'll hit next are Dealey Plaza, Old City Park and Deep Ellum.

TEFAF New York, the European Fine Art Foundation fair, is not short on artworks to keep a visitor’s attention. But just outside the walls of the Park Avenue Armory , the site again of this year’s event, lie many more options for viewing and buying art at the nearby galleries on the Upper East Side.

Four current exhibitions in particular make a perfect walking tour on the way to the fair or after attending it, and they are all within a 10-minute walk of the armory, and each other. On a nice spring day, strolling these blocks is an extra source of pleasure.

The shows spotlight artists who exemplified and investigated the complicated currents of the 20th century’s art movements, particularly Modernism.

The fact that three of the four shows take place in townhouses or mansions adds a little frisson: The domestic settings allow you to imagine being the owner of the works, casually hanging your acquisitions on the walls at home.

Françoise Gilot

Rosenberg & Co. , 19 East 66th Street

Françoise Gilot , who died last year at 101, first became renowned for her 1964 memoir “Life with Picasso,” which chronicled her decade-long affair with the older artist; a famous 1948 Robert Capa photograph of Picasso holding a beach umbrella over her as they walked on the sand added to the legend. She went on to write many other books and to marry the creator of the polio vaccine, Jonas Salk.

Gilot was a lifelong artist herself, as seen in the 36 varied works on view through July 3, the first posthumous exhibition of her work in New York. Picasso appears in the graphite and pencil drawing “Pablo with Red Background (Les yeux basilic)” (1944), and his influence comes through in the works — but he held sway over many artists.

The dealer Marianne Rosenberg, who organized the show with several collaborators, explicitly set out to show Gilot’s range. “I hate that she’s only associated with Picasso,” said Rosenberg, who knew Gilot through family ties; her grandfather was Paul Rosenberg, who helped create a market for Picasso’s work and was a powerful art dealer of the early 20th century.

The works on view include a charmingly simple ink portrait, “Paul Éluard” (1951), depicting the French poet, as well as a 1958 oil still life, “Sunflowers.” As her work evolved, Gilot increasingly began to explore abstraction, culminating in works like the painting “August Stillness” (1997), which features large areas of red, a color she frequently favored.

Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato

David Zwirner , 34 East 69th Street

The name Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato (1900-95) will not resonate with most casual art lovers, but the Brazilian painter is a favorite of the influential dealer David Zwirner, which means that attention will be paid.

The gallery first showed Lorenzato’s work in 2019 in London, and now this show features 25 works in what is only the second U.S. exhibition of his art. Notably, a work by Lorzenzato is included in the 60th edition of the Venice Biennale , perhaps the world’s premier art event, which opened last month.

Lorenzato, born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, painted recognizable scenes — largely landscapes — but pared his subjects down to geometric forms. He cited Cézanne as a major influence. In “Nuvem de Gafanhotos (Cloud of Crickets),” the titular insects become simple plus signs, and several of the works depict a sun as a red ball.

The works, on view through May 25, are modestly scaled, and they look at home on the walls of the 1910 townhouse that became a branch of the gallery in 2017. Up close, you can see Lorenzato’s technique: After brushing on paint, he would make crosshatch patterns with a comb, a stick or a fork, giving the works a texture that almost seems to vibrate.

Zwirner praised the “disarming and captivating” effect of Lorenzato’s work. “I bought a couple of his paintings myself,” he said. “We love looking at them every day.”

Lévy Gorvy Dayan , 19 East 64th Street

A male artist who creates work by having nude female models drag each other through paint on a canvas lying on the floor, all while surrounded by onlookers, might not go over well in 2024. But around 1960 it was considered peak avant-garde.

Yves Klein (1928-62) used that unconventional technique — he called it employing “human paintbrushes” — for his “Anthropométries” series. In his “Fire Paintings,” he made art with a huge flamethrower, torching a canvas that, moments before, had a water-soaked nude model on top of it, so that the resulting scorching would retain a bodily outline in the wet areas. Examples of both series are on view in “Yves Klein and the Tangible World,” a show of around 30 works on view in the gallery’s sprawling mansion through May 25.

“This show was 10 years in the making,” said the dealer Dominique Lévy, who has long represented the Klein estate. “Usually, shows of his work focus on his ethereality, like the ‘Monochromes’” — Klein’s single-color canvases — “but his show is anchored in the materiality and the tangible.” She added, “Right now, we need a show with beauty, harmony and aliveness.”

Klein got a patent in France for the process used to create the color he called International Klein Blue, and he was associated with it during his short, acclaimed career.

So there is plenty of blue on display in this show, both in the works on the walls — including “Untitled Anthropometry (ANT 77)” circa 1961 — and in a “pool” of color on the floor, a reinstallation of a 1957 work called “Pure Pigment,” at the bottom of the mansion’s grand staircase.

Paul Klee and Alexander Calder

Di Donna Galleries , 744 Madison Avenue

The Swiss-born German artist Paul Klee (1879-40) drew and painted compositionally sophisticated scenes, sometimes with a childlike whimsical quality, while the American artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976) pioneered three-dimensional work, particularly the kinetic sculptures he called “mobiles” and his large, standing “stabiles.”

The combination of two beloved artists is a surefire crowd-pleaser, but “Enchanted Reverie: Klee and Calder” is also noteworthy for its installation, with dark gray walls and elaborate lighting that enliven the art and cast dramatic shadows. Featuring more than 40 works, it is on view through June 8.

The dealer Emmanuel Di Donna wanted to draw out the connections between the two artists, who both had a talent for concision as well as a playful side. “They had a shared sensitivity,” Di Donna said. “They’re both looking for something beyond nature — all the way to the cosmos.” He added, “They rhyme.”

The show features loans from both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. Originally it was going to have an explicit underwater garden theme, but then Di Donna expanded it to include other works. Traces of that idea remain, with both artists depicting fish as only they could.

In one of Klee’s aquatic-themed works, the watercolor “Fische in der Tiefe (Fish in the Deep)” (1921), multiple fish eyes look out at the viewer. Calder returned to the fish form again and again throughout his career, including in the red mobile “Le Poisson de huit heures” (1965), made of sheet metal and wire.

As he prepared for the show to open in April, Di Donna gently blew on “Poisson” and it performed on cue, doing a delicately turning dance in response — a perfect bit of inspiration for art lovers who want to get in the swim of things this spring.
