Things to do in Florida

Miami is known as the cruise capital of the world – from here you can set sail for Central and South America, and the electric-blue waters of the Caribbean.

If you've decided to book a cruise-and-stay holiday to extend your trip, then you’ll find plenty to do in Miami. The vibrant South Beach makes the perfect place to experience US beach culture and head off for a shopping trip. Later, how about a visit to the Florida Grand Opera, once the sun sets? Miami is a cultural melting pot, and one of the world’s best-known centres for Art Deco buildings. You could take a trip around the Art Deco district and the Wolfsonian Museum, or even just watch the city’s neon skyline come to life when night falls.

Orlando is the perfect destination for an unforgettable family holiday, combining tropical resorts, gardens and museums with huge attractions like Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. You'll find that it's easily accessible from both Port Canaveral and Tampa.

Port Canaveral's biggest tourism draw is nearby Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Centre, but the area is also a great place to see some of Florida’s most endangered native wildlife. Tampa boasts both beaches and urban attractions too, and spectacular landmarks like the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Busch Gardens amusement park.

Other Cities

There are plenty more fantastic places to see in Florida, with various attractions and landscapes to suit you and the kind of holiday you’re looking for. Fort Lauderdale is the yachting capital of the world, and offers its visitors more than twenty miles of beaches – along with some spectacular native wildlife to see on airboat tours of the Everglades.

Jacksonville is one of the state's largest cities, and it too offers a great choice of wildlife parks, zoos and gardens to explore – as well as museums, galleries and art centres.

Where can I sail to from Florida?

The caribbean.

Cruises from Florida call at a wide range of beautiful Caribbean destinations. St Kitts is a tropical paradise, offering its visitors magnificent beaches and secluded natural beauty – and must-see tourist sights like Brimstone Hill National Park. Travel to St Maarten on your cruise and you could experience a unique blend of colonial cultures, since the island features French and Dutch influences.

The iconic destination of Nassau in the Bahamas is also hugely popular on cruises from Florida, where you'll be spoiled for choice for beaches and reefs. Grand Cayman is a paradise for lovers of the life aquatic, where you can get up close with the underwater wildlife at Stingray City and Dolphin Cove. The popular port of Ocho Rios, meanwhile, boasts one of Jamaica's most memorable and most visited sites, Dunn's River Falls.

Central America

Florida is also your gateway to a number of key ports in Central America, especially destinations like Cozumel in Mexico – an absolute paradise location for keen divers. Belize is another hugely popular tropical destination, with some beautiful historic attractions in the heart of the city like St John’s Cathedral – the oldest Anglican church in Central America. Elsewhere you could tour the caves here, or just relax on the bright white beaches overlooking the turquoise sea.

Some cruises from Florida can even give you the chance to take the Panama Canal and journey up towards California, or down South America's western coast – for a full tour of the sights and experiences around the heart of both Americas.

South America

Brazil's legendary capital Rio is an extremely popular port of call for cruises from Florida. You could relax on Ipanema Beach or take a trip up spectacular Sugarloaf Mountain and see Christ the Redeemer – or time your visit for the world-famous carnival, and see just how much this city loves to party.

Peru's capital Lima offers both ancient and modern treasures, from Incan archaeological finds and the Historic City Centre to the Magic Water Circuit and Parque Reserva. In Chile's colourful Valparaiso, don't miss the World Heritage Site Historic Quarter or the huge amount of vivid street art that adorns the homes and shops here – and even ride a 100-year-old hillside tram for a fantastic way to see the city.

Transatlantic Cruises

Many ships sail the Caribbean in the winter months and move across the pond to the Mediterranean for the summer season. This means that in spring and autumn you have the opportunity to enjoy a transatlantic one-way cruise from Florida either to the UK or to a European port such as Barcelona. We will be happy to arrange a one-way flight to go with your cruise.

20+ Best Miami “Park and Cruise” Hotels (Free/Discount Parking)

Miami hotels with cruise parking can save you a bundle of money.

When it comes to budgeting for a cruise, everyone knows about the cost of the cruise itself. But most people (especially first-time cruisers) don’t realize that parking can be a huge expense as well.

Cruise hotel in Florida

The Port of Miami’s official parking costs a pricey $22 per day ($25-28 if sailing Royal Caribbean) or about $150 for a 7-day cruise! While some nearby independent lots charge significantly less, the price still adds up over the course of a week.

The good news is that you don’t have to shell out this money. A little-known tip is that many hotels in the area cater to cruisers. If you stay at least one night with them, they offer discounted parking during your cruise.

If you’re not planning to stay in a hotel, then buying a room simply for the parking isn’t likely worth it. But if you planned on staying in the area anyway, be sure to ask about parking during your cruise.

More Hotel Ideas: You can also click here to see inexpensive hotels near the Miami cruise port or see hotels with shuttles to the port area .

How to Book Parking During Your Cruise

Now, booking hotel parking for your cruise isn’t always as straightforward as you’d think. There are several different ways to get parking and how to book will depend on the specific hotel. While we’ve laid out all the details, it’s always a good idea to call the hotel directly before booking , as the offers can change.

1. Booking a hotel package: Many hotels offer packages through their website that include parking. Room rates are normally higher than what you’d pay without the parking package, but still more affordable than parking at the port.

2. Paying a per-night fee: Other hotels simply let you pay a daily parking fee while you leave your car there instead of booking a package.

3. Third-party hotel parking: Some hotels have started to work with third-party websites for parking. If you call the hotel, they will direct you to book with the website if you want to leave your car during the cruise.

Below, we’ve covered more than 20 Miami hotels with cruise parking offered. Click on each hotel name to read reviews and see pricing on Kayak.

For hotels that offer parking packages, you may have to book through the hotel website. It’s a good idea to compare the base rate with the parking deal to make sure you are saving money versus parking elsewhere.

The “Park & Cruise” deal that’s offered adds about another $130 to the price, lets you leave your car while you cruise for up to eight nights, and gives you a shuttle to the port for two. Clarion Inn & Suites Miami International Not everyone wants to stay in a fancy hotel. Sometimes you simply want an inexpensive place to stay — especially when you’re there for only a night. In this case, the Clarion Inn can do exactly that. The hotel is affordable and it gets decent reviews.

The hotel offers a parking deal for up to 30 days that’s less than $10 above the “Everyday Rate” we found in our search. The deal is actually meant for airline passengers (the hotel is next to the airport), but there’s no rule that you can’t use it for your cruise.

  • Phone: 305-921-4268

Hampton Inn Miami Airport/Blue Lagoon Blue Lagoon is a unique area just south of the Miami airport that is a literal lagoon. The body of water in the middle of the city is unique and cuts down on some of the concrete jungle that can be Miami.

It is also highly rated, and with its “Park and Go” parking package , you can get up to 10 nights parking included for about $100 over the base rate, although the rate difference varies.

  • Phone: 305-262-5400

Homewood Suites Blue Lagoon This hotel sits at the end of a peninsula that juts out into Blue Lagoon, giving it a convenient location that’s in the middle of everything but still feels secluded.

The hotel offers parking for $15 per day while you are away. That’s a decent savings off the cruise port’s prices. Keep in mind you’ll need to arrange transport between the port and hotel.

  • Distance to Port: 9.5 miles
  • Phone: 305-261-3335

DoubleTree Miami Airport & Convention Center DoubleTree is a well-respected name in hotels, and this spot gets good reviews. It’s situated southwest of the Miami airport, about 10 miles from the cruise port.

A call to the hotel told us they offer parking for $10 per day while you cruise , but you will need to arrange transportation to and from the cruise ship.

  • Distance to Port: 11 miles
  • Phone: 305-261-3800

Hilton Garden Inn Miami Airport West Even if you’re staying in Miami and want to park, it doesn’t mean you have to stay at the pricier hotels near the port. This option is by the airport and offers rooms for as little as around $100 a night in some cases.

The hotel also has a “Park and Cruise” package that includes seven nights parking and a ride to the cruise port. Our search found rates about $50 above the base night rate. That’s considerably cheaper than parking at the port.

  • Phone: 305-629-7701

Hyatt Place Miami Airport-West/Doral Headed out on a longer cruise or back-to-back sailing? This might be your best option. The hotel provides up to 14 nights parking included in their parking special (technically it’s a “Park and Fly” package designed for those flying somewhere, but you can park during your cruise). That length of trip would cost you more than $300 at the Port of Miami for parking alone. The hotel’s package price is only about $20 over the standard nightly rate.

One thing to note is that you are about 12 miles form the port and transportation is not included. Even so, the ride will only cost you about $20-25 each way meaning you still save a bundle versus parking at the cruise terminal.

  • Distance to Port: 12 miles
  • Phone: 305-718-8292

InterContinental at Doral Miami Just because a hotel is high end doesn’t mean it has to have a high-end price tag. The InterContinental features a lot of appeal in accommodations near the airport.

They offer a “Time to Cruise Package” that offers a lot of extras. It includes parking for up to 14 days, breakfast for two, and a $25 Uber gift card to get you to the port.

  • Distance to Port: 13.5 miles
  • Phone: 305-468-1400

Frequently Asked Questions

Are park and cruise packages more expensive than regular hotel rates? In most cases yes, you will pay more for a parking package than you will if you just booked the cheapest no frills rate. For example, a hotel might be $150 a night normally, but charge $180 for the parking package. Still, the extra cost is lower than the price of parking at the Port of Miami, which charges $22 per day ($25-28 if sailing Royal Caribbean).

How do I get to my car after my cruise? Some hotels offer transportation round trip between the hotel and the cruise port. However, you might have noticed that some only offer one-way trips… and some no ride at all. You can get a taxi, Uber, or Lyft between the hotel and port for between $10-20, depending on the location.

I am sailing from Fort Lauderdale. Are there park and cruise hotels there? Yes. South Florida is a mecca of cruising. No matter which port you are sailing from in the area, it will have hotels nearby that cater to cruise passengers. While you aren’t likely to find many Miami hotels that cater to Fort Lauderdale passengers (and vice versa), you can read our Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades) hotels with park and cruise packages .

Entertainment, life after florida georgia line: brian kelley ready to reintroduce himself with new solo album.

NEW YORK – Allow Brian Kelley to reintroduce himself.

Best known as one-half of the country super-duo Florida Georgia Line , Kelley will release a solo album, “Tennessee Truth," on Friday. It is a collection of 12 anthemic country songs ripe for a road trip and tailgate in equal measure.

Recommended Videos

For “Tennessee Truth,” produced by Dann Huff, Kelley says he aimed to “dive into the music I grew up on — obviously the music I love and themes of just country living, rural living, hard work, good times, outdoors, love,” he told The Associated Press from his home in Nashville.

Good songwriting, Kelley says, is a lot like fishing — you need patience. “I wrote probably over 100 songs for this record."

Eight of the 12 songs on the album were written by Kelley, and he worked with whomever he could on others, trying to get outside his comfort zone. “Every song gets you to the next song," he says.

“I think it's a fun record,” he says, adding that the creative process was dependent on these tracks translating live.

Geography still plays a prominent role in the music Kelley makes. Throughout “Tennessee Truth” are beaches in Florida, farms in Nashville, his wife's family farm in Georgia. Hunting, sitting on the porch drinking sweet tea and eating peanuts, conversations with loved ones — that's the kind of life he hopes comes across on the album. “Just being free,” he says.

Fans looking for more coastal country from Kelley — like what was found on his pandemic album, “Sunshine State of Mind,” released in 2020 — will want to skip over to “10 O'Clock On The Dock.”

“It was a passion project,” he says of “Sunshine State of Mind.” “It was supposed to just be its own little thing.”

Kelley says he also made that record with the thought that he would record solo and with Florida Georgia Line. “I made it with a sonic respect to what we were , what we had done and what we had built. So, I didn’t want to tread on anything even close to that, out of respect, you know?”

He says he considers “Tennessee Truth” his true solo debut.

In 2022, Florida Georgia Line embarked on an indefinite hiatus. At that point, the duo of Kelley and Tyler Hubbard had been together more than a decade, and whether you were a fan of their bro country sound or not, their music ( “Cruise,” “Meant to Be,” “Round Here”) set the tone for a generation of country fans . The following year, Hubbard released a self-titled debut solo record.

“I’m thankful that (Brian) had the courage to step into this new space and to make that decision that ultimately kind of pushed me to make the same decision and lead me to where I’m at now,” Hubbard told AP at the time. “I had quite a few people tell me that it couldn’t be done and that I should definitely continue with FGL, and it sort of lit a spark in me, a fire.”

The closing song on “Tennessee Truth" is the feisty “Kiss My Boots," which features Kelley delivering vinegary lyrics like: “Want the world to know that you did me wrong / I don’t know how you act sweet, after how you did me / Here’s a middle finger to you through a song.” Some fans theorize it is a direct message to Hubbard.

“I've read some of that, too,” Kelley says, adding that he understands people might make associations in order to find meaning in the song.

“But at the end of the day,” he says, the song means a lot of different things for his collaborators, “And it really means a lot of different things for me.

“I really put that song out because I wanted people to know that I’m a real human, and I’m not just some face on social media or some somebody that’s had some success," he adds. "You know, I’ve been through hard times in my life.”

But could there be a reunion on the horizon?

“The old saying is, ‘Tell God your plans and he’ll laugh,'” he says. “So, I have no idea. I really don't know what the future holds. I know that I’m really focused on what I’m doing now, and I’m really proud of ... the work that I put in.”

This story has been updated to correct the spelling of Dann Huff’s first name and the song title of “10 O’Clock On The Dock.”
