How We Structured This Houston Weekend Getaways Guide

We’ve intentionally structured this guide to the best weekend getaways from Houston to cover destinations between roughly 3 and 8 hours from the city (emphasis on roughly, of course–Houston area traffic doesn’t always cooperate).

While there are dozens of destinations closer to Houston that could certainly justify a fantastic short road trip (hello Brenham , Conroe , Galveston , and College Station !), we’ve already covered those in our Houston day trips guide , so chose not to include them here.

However, for incredible weekend trips close to Houston, be sure to peruse that post as well.

Small Town Weekend Getaways from Houston

While there are dozens of delightful small towns located within a couple of hours of Houston, go a bit further afield, and you’ll find even more–including some of the most cherished towns of the Texas Hill Country.

Fredericksburg

Known for its German heritage and location in the heart of Texas wine country, Fredericksburg is not only one of the best weekend getaways from Houston, it’s one of the most beloved weekend destinations in the state!

If you love events, consider heading to town for Oktoberfest or the town’s many Christmas events, but no matter when you choose to visit, you’ll find tons to do.

Be sure to go for a wine tasting or two, try your hand at antiquing downtown, hike Enchanted Rock , eat at least a few plates worth of delicious German food, and stay in one of the town’s charming bed and breakfasts during your stay!

Side trips to Luckenbach and Old Tunnel State Park also make delightful additions to a weekend in Fredericksburg.

Driving Distance from Houston

Another beloved gem of the Hill Country, Wimberley is known for its artsy downtown packed with galleries and unique boutiques, its natural beauty, and–most of all–its swimming holes.

Two of Wimberley’s swimming holes ( Jacob’s Well and the Blue Hole ) rank among the most sought-after places to swim in Texas, and you’ll need to plan weeks in advance to score reservations to jump in during the summer!

While in Wimberley, be sure to also browse the downtown shops, climb Old Baldy (aka Prayer Mountain), enjoy a wine tasting, and keep an eye out for the many whimsically painted boot statues around town.

Jefferson (+ Caddo Lake)

The small town of Jefferson, Texas, combined with nearby Caddo Lake State Park, makes one of the best and most diverse Houston getaway ideas (for the lovebirds out there, it’s arguably one of the most romantic getaways from Houston, too).

The best things to do in Jefferson itself include antiquing in the historic downtown center, shopping at the famous Jefferson General Store, staying in one of the many bed and breakfasts that the town is famous for, and learning about Jefferson’s railroad history–touring Jay Gould’s opulent private rail car is a great place to start.

From there, head to Caddo Lake, where you’ll find a very different side of the Lone Star State–one dotted with giant cypress trees that drip Spanish moss and leisurely canoe rides.

This isn’t a lake for swimming–the alligators who live in the lake are best avoided–but it is utterly beautiful, and a fantastic road trip from Houston for those looking to leave city vibes behind entirely.

Nature-Focused Road Trips from Houston

Featuring several state parks and even a national park, these short weekend trips from Houston are perfect for those looking to enjoy the great outdoors.

Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

Fun fact: while both of Texas’ official national parks are further than an 8-hour drive from Houston, there is a US national park accessible on a weekend trip for Houston–it’s in Arkansas!

Aptly named Hot Springs National Park is the perfect Houston getaway destination for those looking for a relaxing weekend complete with a soak in a natural thermal spa.

Located in an urban setting surrounded by shops, restaurants, and more, Hot Springs offers a fantastic mix of natural highlights and small-town charm.

Lost Maples State Natural Area

Known for having the most magical fall foliage in Texas, Lost Maples State Natural Area is one of those remarkable places that makes you appreciate the sheer diversity of beauty that you can find in the Lone Star State.

While the fall foliage season is, hands down, the best time to visit (it generally runs from late October through mid-November), Lost Maples is a year-round destination known for its hiking, fishing, and beautiful views.

The East Trail, while a bit of a challenge, is a must-do if at all possible to seek out the best views in the park.

Whatever trail you choose, though, you’ll find gorgeous views of the Sabinal River, stunning maple trees, and lovely wildlife throughout the park.

Garner State Park

Encompassing more than 1700 acres of beautiful Texas Hill Country, nearly 3 miles of the stunning Frio River, and roughly 16 miles worth of trails, Garner State Park is absolutely one of the best weekend getaways from Houston!

Whether you’d like to hike, camp, float the river, or simply enjoy a picnic and a swim, Garner State Park’s unforgettable beauty will be on full display.

Best Cities for Weekend Trips from Houston, TX

Every city has an energy all its own. If you want a change of pace from Houston without sacrificing the convenience and excitement of city life, here’s where to go!

If you get lucky with traffic, you  may  be able to drive from Houston to Austin in just under 3 hours, but since Austin is difficult at best to pull off as a day trip from Houston, it deserves to be featured as one of the best Houston weekend trips!

As the official capital of Texas and the self-appointed Live Music Capital of the World, Austin is positively bursting with fun things to do and see.

During your weekend in Austin, stroll down South Congress, see a show, decide for yourself where you can find the best breakfast tacos in Austin (biased hint: they’re at Veracruz All Natural, though Juan in a Million is a close second), snap the iconic photos with the Greetings from Austin mural and I Love You So Much mural, watch the sunset from Mount Bonnell , and try your hand at kayaking or SUPing on Lady Bird Lake.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Featuring some of the best food, music, and culture in all of the country, having a city as incredible as NOLA reachable as a road trip from Houston is definitely something to take advantage of!

While you’re there, be sure to enjoy Bourbon Street, but get off of it, as well: NOLA is more than just its incredible partying (though the partying does indeed live up to the legends).

Consider visiting the Garden District, taking a ghost tour, visiting the nearby bayou, taking a steamboat cruise, and of course, eating plenty of excellent food, from po’ boys to beignets, during the course of your weekend in NOLA .

5 hours, 10 minutes.

Often lumped in with its next-door neighbor of Dallas, Fort Worth is a distinct city all its own.

On short road trips from Houston, you probably won’t have time to see both cities–so that’s all the more reason to plan more than one weekend escape to North Texas!

During a weekend in Fort Worth, be sure to watch a cattle drive at the Stockyards, pay a visit to famous Sundance Square, watch US currency being printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (yes, really–it’s even free to visit!), and check out the beautiful Fort Worth Water Gardens.

Want to get a bit of a thrill during your trip?

San Antonio

As the most-touristed city in Texas, San Antonio knows how to show visitors a good time, and it is absolutely one of the best weekend getaways from Houston.

Be sure to visit the famous Alamo, as well as the rest of the San Antonio Missions. All five missions, including the Alamo, are recognized together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site–the only UNESCO site that exists in Texas!

You’ll also want to sample the Riverwalk, of course, as well as visit the San Fernando Cathedral, stroll through the King William Historic District, go shopping at the Historic Market Square and in La Villita, and visit one of San Antonio’s incredible museums.

During December in San Antonio , holiday events and 100,000 Christmas lights along the Riverwalk transform the city into one of the best places to celebrate Christmas in Texas–and the fact that the weather finally cools off then doesn’t hurt, either.

If you’ve heard of one thing about Tyler, it’s probably about its flowers: not only is the stunning Tyler Rose Garden one of the most magnificent rose gardens in the country, but Tyler’s Azalea Trails also draw plenty of visitors each spring.

Add in beautiful historic homes to tour, a handful of local distilleries, a cool planetarium, and one of the top barbecue joints in Texas (Stanley’s BBQ), and you have the makings of an incredibly fun Houston weekend getaway.

Be sure to also stop by Tyler State Park to hike or fish, and to browse this small city’s charming downtown while you’re there.

Known for big hair, big (oil) money, and big buildings, Dallas is a quintessentially Texan city that has a distinctly different vibe from Houston.

It also happens to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the USA, with an excellent food scene and a plethora of things to do–and while the Houston vs Dallas rivalry may run deep, even the most loyal Houstonites will enjoy spending a long weekend in Dallas.

Of course, no weekend trip to Dallas would be complete without a somber exploration of the assassination of President Kennedy, whose murder in Dallas in 1963 is one of the most haunting in the USA’s collective memory.

On a lighter note, though, Dallas offers far more than morbid history: with phenomenal shopping, excellent skyline views at Reunion Tower, walkable neighborhoods like the Bishop Arts District, and great gardens and museums (the Dallas Arboretum is stunning), you’ll find plenty of fun things to do during a weekend getaway from Houston in Dallas.

With enough time, you can even stop in small towns like Huntsville, Centerville , and Corsicana on your way to Dallas!

Long known as the home of Baylor University, Waco has become one of the most popular road trips from Houston in recent years for a very different reason: the opening of Magnolia Market, owned by Chip & Joanna Gaines of HGTV fame.

Even beyond the incredibly popular Silos District , though, Waco has plenty to see.

Consider also stopping by the Dr. Pepper Museum, enjoying Baylor’s beautiful campus, or checking out the Wooly Mammoth National Monument during your visit.

Fun Beach Road Trips from Houston

Galveston may be the most accessible beach for a weekend trip from Houston, but it’s far from the only one!

Unlike the rest of Texas’ major cities, Houston is even within reach of beach towns beyond Texas that you can enjoy on a short road trip from Houston!

Pensacola Beach, Florida

The legendary beaches of Florida–the ones on the very western edge of the panhandle, anyway–just barely squeeze into our criteria for these weekend trips from Houston.

While you’re there, be sure to check out Fort Barrancas, the Pensacola Lighthouse, and the National Naval Aviation Museum. Most importantly, though, make sure to spend plenty of time on the absolutely stunning beach!

If you’re visiting over a long weekend, you might even want to squeeze in a day trip to nearby Destin.

South Padre Island

As the only tropical island in Texas, South Padre Island definitely ranks among the best weekend trips from Houston.

Here, you’ll find 34 miles of sandy beaches with calm, beautiful water, dolphins to watch, recovering sea turtles to visit, the opportunity to take a horseback ride on the beach, and some stupendous sunrises.

South Padre Island is one of the most popular beaches in Texas for good reason, and though it is known for its raucous Spring Break parties during March, outside of those weeks, the island is a far more laid-back escape.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

Want to enjoy some of the best gulf beaches in the south, but don’t want to drive  quite  as far as Pensacola Beach?

Consider heading to Gulf Shores, Alabama, where you’ll not only find stunning beaches at incredibly affordable prices but excellent seafood, a wildlife refuge, and a couple of state parks to visit.

3 unique road trips you can take from Houston in 4 hours or less

Summer Hull

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Houston is one of the top five most populated U.S. cities, with a population of more than 2 million residents. Within Houston , you've got immediate access to a diverse collection of top-notch cuisine, the Space Center and NASA, world-class museums, large outdoor spaces, major league sporting teams and more.

But -- sometimes, no matter how much you have to do in your own backyard, you need a change of scenery and a break from lots of people .

Texas is a pretty massive state at around 800 miles across, so unlike in the Northeast, if you want to limit your driving distance to an easy four hours or so in each direction, you probably aren't crossing the state lines for this particular road trip . Within a four-hour drive from Houston, technically you could reach some of Louisiana and come within an hour or so of getting to Arkansas or Oklahoma, but more than likely, you are staying in the Lone Star State.

With that in mind, here are three very different road trips within Texas that you can take from Houston on less than a tank of gas.

Texas Hill Country

Distance from Houston : 3 hours

What to do: Get ready to unplug, put your feet in the cold water and crack open a cool drink.

In the Texas Hill Country, you can enjoy the lakes, rivers and hikes in small Central Texas towns such as Wimberley, New Braunsfels, Canyon Lake, Fredericksburg and Luckenbach.

Wineries are abundant in this area, as are can't-miss swimming holes . As far as swimming holes go, in Wimberley, you'll find Blue Hole (great for hanging out and rope swinging) and Jacob's Well (great for jumping in from rocks above). About 30-miles west of Austin , you'll find Hamilton Pool, another top-notch place to cool down in the Hill Country.

But all in all, for a true getaway, I'm partial to Wimberley, where you can stay away from it all on the Blanco River in a cabin and then easily walk into town for a meal and shopping at local, independent retailers when you decide you need a dose of civilization.

Then, when you want to take in the view, walk up the 218 rock steps of Old Baldy to get a breathtaking aerial view of the area.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

An added benefit is you've now probably worked off enough calories to have an extra snack or drink, which are in abundant supply.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

Where to stay: Book a cabin that ranges from one to three bedrooms at The Waters Point in Wimberley. Prices usually range from $200–$400 per night.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

At one of these cabins, such as the two-bedroom Pioneer Cabin pictured above, you will have private access to a half-mile of the Blanco River, but you can also walk right into town or make the three-minute drive over to Blue Hole to swing into the blue water below.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

While it's very different from Wimberley, if you want a taste of the Hill Country on hotel points, you can check out Hyatt Lost Pines Resort in Bastrop for 20,000 World of Hyatt points per night or the Hyatt Regency Hill Country outside San Antonio for 15,000 Hyatt points per night or by using a Category 1–4 award you get each year you have the World of Hyatt Credit Card.

Where to eat and drink: If you head to Wimberley, absolutely don't miss dinner from the Leaning Pear (open Tuesday to Saturday for dinner). We loved everything we tried but gave the highest marks to the wood-fired pizza, Leaning Pear house salad, fried avocado tostada and fried brussels sprouts.

Also, be sure and pick up some breakfast pastries next to the Leaning Pear from the Sugar Shack Bakery. That way, you'll have them at the ready for when you wake up the next morning. (Get the cinnamon and sugar croissants if they have them in stock!) If you want a meal with live music by the river in Wimberley, check out Ino'z.

Bolivar Peninsula

Distance: 1.5 hours, depending on the ferry schedule or if you make the drive through Winnie without the ferry

What to do: You head to the 27-mile stretch of beach on the Bolivar Peninsula from Houston because you want to go to see, hear or touch the waves without spending all day in the car to head to a further afield stretch of beach. To get to Bolivar, you can take a longer drive around to avoid the ferry, or you can take a free 2.7-mile ferry ride from Galveston to the peninsula that carries both vehicles or pedestrians. Either way, you're a world away from the city in a hurry.

easy road trips from houston

Many visitors to Bolivar rent golf carts and cruise up and down the shoreline. You can also go fishing from the beach or in the bay.

Where to stay: You'll probably want to rent a beach house if you plan on spending the night in Crystal Beach or one of the other portions of Bolivar. And this may be a surprise if you haven't been to Bolivar in a while, but many of the beach houses are really, really nice and on the newer side. In 2008, Hurricane Ike all but destroyed Bolivar, wiping out thousands of homes, taking lives and bringing with it over 100-mile-per-hour winds and a massive storm surge. It was a horrific event for the Texas Gulf Coast.

Now, more than a decade later, there are new beach houses dotting the shore, many of which are available for rent from local rental companies or on sites such as Airbnb and VRBO.

If you really want to use your points, instead of Bolivar, you can stay in Galveston and redeem 30,000 Wyndham Rewards points per night at the historic, beachfront Hotel Galvez. Another option near the ferry landing in Galveston is a Homewood Suites by Hilton that can be booked from around 30,000 Hilton Honors points per night .

But really, for a true Bolivar experience, go for a beach house rental if you can.

Where to eat and drink: Have you really been to Bolivar if you didn't order a basket of Gulf Coast fried shrimp at Stingarees ? Arguably not. Stinagree is located in Crystal Beach on the Intracoastal Canal and is known for its seafood, cold drinks, live music and epic sunsets. My family can't go to Bolivar without a stop (or two) at Stinagree. Bonus points if some tugs and barges go by during your meal.

Another popular spot for a meal on Bolivar is Steve's Landing, where my family can vouch for the shrimp and grits. For some quick breakfast items when you don't feel like flipping your own pancakes, check out Dannay's Donuts or Third Coast Coffee.

San Antonio

Distance: 3 hours west on I-10

What to do: San Antonio is only a three-hour drive from Houston (OK, that's when there's no traffic), but it feels like a world away. There's no shortage of things to do, see and eat in San Antonio, but you'd certainly be remiss if you didn't spend some time on the Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. An easy, fun way to get a sense of where you are is to take a narrated riverboat cruise up and down the river. Then, you have to get some chips, dip, tacos and perhaps a cold margarita.

The San Antonio River Walk and the scenic canal tours via boat.(Photo by dszc/Getty Images)

Also near the Riverwalk is the world-famous Alamo, and while it's certainly worth a visit, it is far from the only mission in the area. The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park has four separate mission sites you can visit during your stay.

And, if all of that above-ground exploring gets too hot (and it really might in the summer), you can head underground to Natural Bridge Caverns that takes you up to 180 feet below the surface, where it stays around 70 degrees all year long.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

For some more indoor, air-conditioned activities for the family in San Antonio, you can check out the DoSeum, which is geared for kids up to about age 10. For the older crew, the Witte Museum gets high marks and is even free on Tuesday evenings, if you can time your visit right.

Where to stay: There are many hotels on or near the Riverwalk. You can use Marriott points to book a room at the historic St. Anthony, a Luxury Collection property, for 30,000 to 40,000 Marriott points per night . The Hyatt Regency San Antonio Riverwalk isn't quite as luxe, but it is in a great location for 12,000 Hyatt points per night. If you want a bit more resort with your trip to the San Antonio area, the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort is just outside the city, complete with a lazy river, a waterslide, shaded pools and more.

easy road trips from houston

Where to eat: You must eat some Tex-Mex while in San Antonio and you'll have plenty of options in that arena. Some popular options include La Margarita, Mi Tierra (open 24 hours and has a bakery) and the prickly pear margarita at Boudro's basically has its own fan club.

If you are craving chicken wings, Cullum's Attagirl has a wide assortment of flavor choices. TPG's Benet Wilson swears by the Nashville hot and the peanut butter and jelly (it shouldn't work, but she says it totally does). For a sweet treat, Bird Bakery also gets high marks for its cupcakes and cookies.

Bottom line

If you're in Houston and have a tank of gas at the ready, there are almost limitless experiences, vastly different from city life, just waiting within a few hours' drive. From the cold rivers and shady trees of the Hill Country to the hot salsa and vibrant culture in San Antonio and the lazy afternoons at the beach in Bolivar, there's no need to spend all your time in Texas underneath the shadow of the Houston skyscrapers -- get out there and explore.

Absolutely Best Road Trips from Houston

Texas lends itself well to adventure

easy road trips from houston

America’s fourth-largest city is a cosmopolitan destination filled with world-class dining, arts, entertainment, shopping, and outdoor recreation. Take a stroll through the historic Heights, spend the day exploring the Museum District, or head down to Space Center Houston.

easy road trips from houston

We love Houston even for its bonkers weather. But that doesn’t mean we don’t like to get away from it all. With that in mind, we’ve put together a little road trip bucket list with mini itineraries for a variety of interest. Best of all, you won’t even need to be on the road that long: we’re talking six-hour drives, tops, which in Texas terms is basically a trip around the corner.

Best Outdoor Getaway: Guadalupe River State Park, Texas

Distance from Houston: 206 miles

easy road trips from houston

With Big Bend roughly 640 miles and 5 billion worlds away (qualifying it for more than just a short road trip), Guadalupe River State Park is a great spot for a scenic adventure in the Great Outdoors. Many folks come here to swim but the park is more than a great swimming hole with beautiful scenery and colorful history.

easy road trips from houston

On the river, you can swim, fish, tube, and canoe. In the dog days of summer, you’ll want to beat the heat and kayak or canoe the Guadalupe River which boasts the 5 mile Guadalupe River State Park Paddling Trail.

easy road trips from houston

While on land, you can camp, hike, ride mountain bikes or horses, picnic, geocache, and bird watch. Explore 13 miles of hike and bike trails. Trails range from the 2.86-mile Painted Bunting Trail to the .26-mile Barred Owl Trail, which leads you to a scenic overlook of the river. Camping is the way to go, here with 85 campsites offering amenities like picnic tables, outdoor grills, fire pits, and water, and electricity.

Best Barbecue Getaway: Lockhart, Texas

Distance from Houston: 156 miles

easy road trips from houston

A short trip to this flavor-packed smoke town should be on any food lover’s bucket list. Dubbed the “BBQ Capital of Texas,” Lockhart is easily one of the most legendary barbecue destinations in the world. While you could make it a daytrip you’ll need several days or more to eat your way through it. Don’t forget to pack a cooler, though, because you’ll want to bring some meat home.

easy road trips from houston

Your Day One itinerary includes the bulk of your eating, as you tackle at least two of the Big Three: Black’s Barbecue (open since 1932), Kreuz Market (est. 1900), and Smitty’s Market (since 1948). You need to consume a lot of meat today, so be sure to stop for breaks. Proceed in any order you please.

easy road trips from houston

At Black’s, third generation pitmaster Kent Black is slow smoking his barbecue with a simple rub and local Post Oak wood. Choose the behemoth beef rib, packing a 9-inch long bone with around 2 inches of fatty, marbled beef cocooning it; and don’t forget the hand-stuffed and -tied homemade sausage (original, garlic, or jalapeno-cheddar), made from an 80-year-old recipe that has stood the test of time.

easy road trips from houston

The black soot covering Smitty’s foyer and pit room is a good sign—it means the place is alive and kickin’ after all these years. Go for the Texas trinity of brisket, pork ribs, and sausage, fresh from the pit, and throw on a pork chop if you’re feeling wild. This is the kind of spot where asking for sauce is welcome and it’s a tasty sauce indeed.

easy road trips from houston

Lockhart has one more stop in store for you before the drive home: Chisholm Trail Barbecue (opened by a Black’s alum in 1978). There’s a drive-through and BBQ sandwiches if you so please, but you can also head inside for a full plate lunch packed with smoked turkey, sausage links, and moist brisket with sides like mac and cheese, hash browns, and broccoli salad… because you should probably get some greens in.

Best Getaway to Czech Out: La Grange

Distance from Houston: 100 miles

easy road trips from houston

Etched in the eroded headstones in the city cemetery and the cemeteries at the nearby “painted churches”—quaint little chapels with exquisite, spangled interiors—are the names of German and Czech immigrants who flocked to the town starting in the 1840s. With its rich heritage, it’s no surprise that La Grange is the hub for celebrating the Czech culture in Texas. Over 80 percent of the Czech Moravian families that settled in Texas at some time lived in Fayette County before they spread out across the state.

easy road trips from houston

For starters, Czech out the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. Vitáme Vás is the Czech equivalent of “howdy”, and you’ll certainly feel welcome.

easy road trips from houston

Monument Hill State Park is 40-acres of land on a bluff overlooking La Grange. The state park is home to the site of Monument Hill, the grounds on which the war to keep Texas free was fought. Also housed in the park are the ruins of Kreische Brewery, one of Texas’ first commercial breweries.

easy road trips from houston

The Czech immigrants incorporated different aspects of their culture into the town, perhaps the most apparent being the architecture of the buildings standing in the town square. In the center of the Square sits the current Fayette County Courthouse, the fourth structure to house county business since 1838.

easy road trips from houston

The settlers also introduced a town favorite treat—the kolache! The best spots to grab a kolache is Weikel’s Bakery. Don’t worry—you don’t have to squeeze every flavor into one trip… Weikel’s will ship these goodies anywhere in the country!

Best Island Getaway: Galveston Island, Texas

Distance from Houston: 50 miles

easy road trips from houston

Come to the island to stroll the beach or splash in the waves. Or come to the island to go fishing or look for coastal birds. No matter what brings you here, you’ll find a refuge at Galveston Island State Park. Just an hour from Houston, but an island apart!

easy road trips from houston

The Texas coast is on an hourglass-shaped migratory path called the Central Flyway that extends from Alaska to South America. This makes Galveston Island State Park a must-see birding spot, especially with its combination of beach, prairie, and marsh.

easy road trips from houston

Love it or hate it, Galveston is the closest beach to Houston (and we do love it). Here’s how you can love it, too: If it’s not a beach day, you’re spending the rest of the day exploring. Hit the historic Strand District, a 70-block jewel where you’ll find gorgeous Victorian buildings housing museums, boutiques, theaters, shops, and La King’s Confectionary, an old-timey sweets shop where you’ll be picking up some ice cream, dipped chocolates, and taffy.

easy road trips from houston

Before you make the short trip back to H-town, get in some extra island time by hitting the 32-miles of sands, having some old school fun at the Pleasure Pier amusement park, checking out historically and architecturally significant spots like the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa and 1892 Bishop’s Palace, or at the very least, getting a beer at Galveston Island Brewing Company.

Texas Spoken Friendly

Worth Pondering…

Well it’s lonesome in this old town Everybody puts me down I’m a face without a name Just walking in the rain Goin’ back to Houston, Houston, Houston

—lyrics by Lee Hazelwood, recorded by Dean Martin (1965)

The 9 Best Weekend Road Trips from Houston, Texas

Posted by Cindy Brzostowski April 09, 2021 Updated May 21, 2024

Sometimes when the itch to travel strikes, you just have to head out of town for the weekend. Fortunately for Houstonians, you have plenty of fun road trip options to choose from.

From seeing what the state’s other big cities have to offer (each has its own distinct personality) to exploring the outdoors along the Gulf Coast, these are the best weekend trips from Houston. With the numerous attractions in each of these stops, you’ll have more than enough to do for a whole weekend. You may even find yourself already planning your return trip, and that’s no problem seeing as none are more than four hours away by car.

Remember that Texas is a huge state and traffic can drastically change the travel times. You’ll almost always be better off avoiding heading into cities at morning rush hour or out of cities from around 4 to 6 p.m. You can shorten your drive times significantly if you travel during off hours.

You’ve probably heard the phrase “Keep Austin Weird.” So go see for yourself what makes the metropolis so fun and funky by ambling past the boutiques of South Congress Street or bar hopping on Sixth Street or Rainey Street. Of course, Austin is also the capital of Texas, so you can take in the history at spots like the Texas Capitol and the Bullock Texas State History Museum .

One of the best things about Austin is its easy access to nature. The city’s Lady Bird Lake offers a pretty place to go for a walk or kayak, though taking a swim in Barton Springs Pool , a hike up Mount Bonnell , and a walk around the Greenbelt are also all popular activities. There’s also plenty of water-based recreation near Lake Travis, just northwest of the city.

Did you know this city calls itself the “Live Music Capital of the World?” While you’re there, see if you can catch a show at one of the many live music venues across the city, from the small bars downtown to the large venues like the Austin 360 Amphitheater.

Visiting the Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum is another activity to put at the top of your list. This open-air museum on the campus of Lamar University gives a great, hands-on view of the Texas oil boom.

Distances and travel times in this guide are calculated using Google Maps at the time of writing, using Houston City Hall, in downtown Houston, as the departure point.  Travel times may vary for your trip based on the day and time you choose to travel.

1. Blue Bell Creamery In Brenham

Distance: 76 miles

Travel Time: 1 hour 15 mins

Encircled by Bluebonnet fields, the small town of Brenham feels a world away from the big city. The area has a host of fine wineries on its wine trail and several beautiful spas, but a relaxing day in the field is not Brenham’s claim to fame. The quaint town is home to the one and only Blue Bell Creamery . The south’s favorite ice cream, Blue Bell was started in 1907 in “The Little Creamery” in Brenham. A handful of local businessmen got together and decided to make butter out of the excess cream of local farmers. A few years later, they started making ice cream for their neighbors. In 1930, they changed the name to reflect the Bluebonnets that grew nearby, and the rest was history.

Stop in and learn more about the history of Blue Bell, the town that made it famous, and the ice cream production process at the visitor center. Try a fresh scoop in the parlor and stop in the country store for a souvenir of your trip. Before you leave, stroll through the downtown historic district’s shops and boutiques and take a ride on the sweet, antique carousel.

2. Blessington Farms

Distance: 48 miles

Travel Time: 48 mins

Blessington Farms is a great Houston day trip for families. It’s part family farm, part amusement park. Not only can you pick your own seasonal produce, including bushels of strawberries in summer and big beautiful pumpkins in the fall, but they also have a ton of family-friendly games.

Kids will love the tug of war, rope maze, and trolley swing. They can also take a hayride, climb the tire mountain, or go fishing on their 2-acre lake. They also have a petting zoo that includes camels! This place is a true hidden gem. It’s family-owned and operated, and a perfect place for your family to spend the day!

3. Railean Distillery

Distance: 38.8 miles

Travel Time: 47 mins

While there are many distilleries in Texas to visit, the Railean Distillery has a claim to several “firsts.” It was the first distillery in the Lone Star State to make rum and the first to make agave spirits. They also founded the American Rum Association.

The distillery is located in San Leon, a small town that they describe as “a small drinking community with a big fishing problem.” Take a tour of the distillery and learn about the history and production of Texas spirits, then get initiated in the pirate guild. The on-site bar is dedicated to an old pirate-themed joint called “Buccaneer Bar” that was destroyed by Hurricane Ike. The founders were drinking in the original bar when they decided to start their own distillery, so now they pay it tribute. Learn the secret toast and earn your mug. Railean is a really good time, but you might consider a big meal of oysters at Pier 6 Seafood and Oyster House to sober up before heading back to the city.

4. Stark Museum of Art

Distance: 108 miles

Travel Time: 1 hour 40 mins

Located in the easternmost city in Texas, on the Louisiana border, Orange Texas is a small city, but it is home to one of the nation’s largest collections of American Western Art—the Stark Museum of Art . Peruse paintings, prints, sculptures, and rare books and drawings depicting the people and wildlife of the American frontier.

The collection includes works from John James Audobon, Georgia O’Keefe, and John Mix Stanley. Other exhibits include Native American basketry, pottery, and jewelry. Make sure to see Steuben’s “United States in Crystal” glassware set. The delicate chalices represent each state with a personal inscription, etched in crystal.

While you are in town, stop by the incredible Queen Anne mansion of W.H. Stark. The house is stunning and so is the antique collection!

5. Space Center Houston

Distance: 26.5 miles

Travel Time: 27 mins

Want to touch a moon rock? You are in luck. The Starship Gallery Artifact Museum at the Space Center Houston will let you! Ok, it’s a little confusing here. The Space Center Houston is the official visitor center at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. It is the headquarters for the astronaut corps and is one of NASA’s training centers.

The space center is loaded with interactive activities and space-themed education. It boasts over 400 things to do, including touring the Apollo Command Module and touring a replica space shuttle, perched upon its giant carrier. Guided tours on the NASA Tram are also available for a behind-the-scenes look at humans in space.

Space Center Houston is a blast. It is located just outside the city and makes an easy and educational day trip for homeschoolers or just a fun day out for the whole family.

6. The Alamo

Distance: 196 miles

Travel Time: 2 hours 55 mins

“Remember the Alamo”? San Antonio is pushing it for a day trip because there is so much to see and do in this beautiful city! If you choose to stay the weekend, make sure to stroll the Riverwalk, hit up the rides at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and catch a show at Sea World.

If you are only going for the day though, stop to see the star of the city, the Alamo ! The beautiful old girl was originally built as a mission, but during the Texas Revolution, a key battle was fought here between the Mexican army and a Texas regiment. The battle resulted in the death of both Davy Crockett and James Bowie under the brutal attack of General Santa Anna. The battle was so brutal, in fact, that many Texans and Tejanos joined the Texas army afterward, and the Revolution was ended shortly thereafter, in favor of Texas.

Take a guided tour of the battleground and structure. Explore artifacts used in the battle and engage in demonstrations by skilled actors on frontier life in the 1800s. The Alamo requires advanced timed tickets to visit.

7. Creole Nature Trail

Distance: 133 miles

Travel Time: 2 hours

The Creole Nature Trail is pure wilderness in the marshlands of Louisiana. The trail is over 180 miles, running through multiple nature and wildlife reserves. It’s not a trail so much as a road trip. Start your journey at the Creole Nature Trail Adventure Point and explore Cajun history, and the natural history of the area, through several unique interactive displays. The exhibit is free and helps you get a good grasp of what you will encounter on the trail.

Then, move along the roadway to see birds, alligators, and stunning landscapes. There are beautiful viewpoints and manmade stops along the way. There also happens to be 26 miles of Gulf of Mexico shoreline to explore, so bring your seashell bucket and swimsuit! The Creole Nature Trail is one of the best day trips from Houston for nature lovers, and it is great for those who are unable to hike long distances or be on their feet for long periods.

Travel Time: 1 hour 21 mins

For a deeper look at the industry that helped build the Lone Star State, head for Beaumont and the Texas Energy Museum . Erupting in 1901, it was the first major oil find in Texas and kicked off the boom.

The permanent exhibit covers everything from the geology that makes oil production possible to the advanced chemistry used in refinement. See archives of historical information and a plethora of equipment used throughout the years. Keep a watch on their website for special events and presentations!

10. Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston Island

Distance: 55.7 miles

Travel Time: 1 hour

Summer in Texas is hot, and if you have kids in tow, there is no better day trip from Houston than hitting the fake waves at Schlitterbahn Waterpark . Twenty-six acres of ridiculous fun, with over 33 rides and attractions, in short, Schlitterbahn is epic.

There are numerous no-entry beaches, fast water slides, “not so lazy” rivers, and even indoor and heated pools. You can reserve a private cabana for your family to hang out in, do some shopping at the merch stores, and enjoy a full day of meals in the park’s numerous restaurants.

Galveston Island is a super fun family vacation spot. You can visit Kemah boardwalk (later), Moody Gardens, Pleasure Pier overwater amusement park, and some of the beautiful beaches of the Bolivar Peninsula … if you decide to make it a weekend getaway!

11. Museum of the Gulf Coast Port Arthur

Distance: 89.6 miles

Port Arthur is a small city on the Gulf of Mexico that is famous for birding and fishing! The city has the good fortune of being located on two migratory bird paths, the Mississippi and the Central. Storks, roadrunners, colorful pink spoonbills, owls, warblers, and flycatchers call the region home, either permanently or seasonally. The habitat of the region is as varied as the bird species you might see, so take your time and enjoy the views. Be careful though, where there are birds, there are alligators! Pleasure Island is one of the best places to see seabirds and many forest species are found in the Sabine Woods.

This area of the Gulf Coast is a mix of freshwater lakes and marshlands and saltwater inlets. So, as you can imagine, fishing is kind of a big deal. Kayak fishing around the port is popular, as well as shore fishing from the 14 miles of shoreline on Sabine Lake. Chartered fishing expeditions are also available from multiple companies in Port Arthur.

Port Arthur also has an interesting and unexpected trail on which you might find a little peace. Due to its location, the area has drawn travelers and workers from all over the world and many different cultural and spiritual backgrounds. They are all represented on Port Arthur’s Faith Trail. Visit the Buu Mon Buddhist Temple, Our Lady of Guadelupe Catholic Shrine, Queen of Peace Shrine and Gardens, and the beautiful stained glass of Jewish Temple Emanuel.

Finish your day with a plate full of the local delicacy … crawfish! The spicy Cajun mudbugs are the perfect end to a coastal day! You can get a hearty plate at Reel Cajun Seafood Restaurant & Bar .

12. Kemah Boardwalk

Distance: 33.1 miles

Travel Time: 37 mins

The seaside boardwalk is lined with shops, food shacks, and classic rides. Horse-drawn carriages line the streets, ready to take tourists on an adventure.

Kemah Aquarium is very entertaining for children. The boardwalk also has a rainforest exhibit and touch tanks, where you can feel a real stingray at Stringray Reef. The exhibit includes not only stingray tanks but also piranhas, snakes, scorpions, and turtles. Kemah is also a hub for fishing and sailing charters.

13. Goose Island State Park

Distance: 180 miles

Travel Time: 2 hours 45 mins

Goose Island State Park is home to the 1,000-year-old tree. The park is home to the Southern Live Oak, a tree with a 35-foot circumference and more than 90-foot spread. Goose Island is enclosed by two bodies of water, Aransas Bay and Lake St. Charles. While swimming is not suggested, the island is a haven for fishermen.

The waters are teeming with Speckled Trout, Red Drum, and flounder. The island is also popular with campers and hikers.

14. Sam Houston National Forest

Distance: 59.5 miles

Located less than an hour north of Houston, the Sam Houston National Forest is one of four national forests in Texas and is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. It contains 163,037 acres of land between Conroe, Cleveland, and Richards. The forest is an outdoorsman’s paradise. It’s laced with fantastic hiking trails, and birders come to catch a glimpse of the endangered Red-Cockaded Woodpecker and the national bird of the USA, the Bald Eagle.

The area is also popular with off-roaders. So bring your buggy and get muddy. Just don’t hit the horseback riders. Hunting, boating, canoeing, and camping are all available in the forest, so no matter what your outdoor poison, the Sam Houston National Forest has you covered!

15. Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge

Distance: 73.2 miles

Travel Time: 1 hour 23 mins

The Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge is over 34,000 acres of bayous and floodplain that creates a perfect habitat for migratory birds and alligators. But that’s not all, the refuge is also home to bobcats and whistling ducks.

You can explore on your own or take a ranger-guided tour through the marshlands. If you are an animal lover, Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge is a perfect day trip for you. Just make sure to put on the bug spray. This area is humid!

16. San Jacinto Battleground

Distance: 23.2 miles

Travel Time: 26 mins

Remember that Alamo loss from earlier. Well, all those really ticked off troops from that battle gathered about 6 weeks later and destroyed the Mexican forces at the Battle of San Jacinto and won the independence of what we now call the great state of Texas. The battle reportedly lasted all of 18 minutes. We aren’t sure who got out the timer, but nonetheless, the battle was short and decisive.

There are three connected sites to visit, Battleship Texas State Historic Site (currently closed for renovations), the San Jacinto Battleground , and the San Jacinto Monument . The San Jacinto Museum is also worth a stop for an awesome video production explaining the importance of the battle and over 2,000 pieces of art and artifacts from the era.

Distance: 162 miles

Travel Time: 2 hours 32 mins

Texas’s lively capital, Austin, is a world away from the rest of the state. It is the live music capital of the world and is dripping with hipster vibes. It’s home to the music and media festivals Austin City Limits and South by Southwest. It’s a fun city and a great day trip for foodies and art lovers.

Visit the Umlauf Sculpture Gardens , the Zilker Botanical Gardens , or go biking on one of the many nature trails Austin has to offer. For more ways to spend your day in Austin, check out our guide to the “ Best Museums in Austin .”

18. Brazos Bend State Park

Distance: 45.6 miles

Travel Time: 49 mins

Spend a day in the wetlands hiking the Creekfield Lake Nature Trail. It’s a very short, paved trail that will give you a glimpse of the stunning landscape that surrounds you. Watch out for the slightly weird bronze animals lurking about.

Brazos Bend State Park also has 13 miles of multi-use trails that are popular for horseback riding and biking. You can also book a guided ecological tour through the park and gain a deeper understanding of the delicate balance of the wetlands ecosystem. It’s a rare South Texas park, with no beachfront, so it is often less crowded and a place to truly escape into the sights and sounds of nature.
