Low water and motor coach use for part of the trip were the only issues. Avalon did a great job of working around the issues and has offered generous compensation for the inconvenience. Iā€™ll use Avalon again.

Crosieurope had nice food, plenty of beer and wine, very clean boat - both inside and out. Staff were very nice and helpful, always cleaning windows, carpet, etc. The administration staff were a bit at times disorganised. Sometimes they would forget to give message in English after they delivered Message in French.

The beautiful blue Danube (port-to-port cruise)

The tour was very good, the crew were excellent, very helpful, approachable and informative and always available. The tours were great and the Danube is wonderful to cruise on. The food was of excellent quality but the fact that there was no choice on the menu was poor and we feel there should have been an earlier sitting for dinner, and lunch could have been a buffet. The accommodation was adequate but the shower was totally inadequate. We enjoyed the cruise

The program in the Emerald ship was magnificently planned and discussed. The local music during the cruise was so informative. Long live the music from the Netherlands and Germany through Austria and Slovakya to Hungary! Just for the music, dances and songs I will do the cruise again!

All the staff were excellent. I especially would like to mention Stepan, Ana, Giovanni, Yani, Yasa, Raka, Vah, Bonbon, Titot, Dani, Christian. But everyone treated us like royalty. Not one time did someone say, "oh that is not my job." The accomodations were top class, the food excellent, loved the pool. Definately 5 stars.

Enchanting Danube (2024) (Passau to Budapest, 2024) Tour

Enchanting Danube (2024) (Passau to Budapest, 2024)

This was our first river cruise and everything went beyond our expectation. Services: the staff were accommodating and helpful. Tours: various excursions to choose from for different age group and they were well-organized. Ship: beautiful boutique-design ship. The only cons is a slow Wifi connection but it ain't a big deal. There were so many onboard activity that kept us entertaining. I noticed that the cruise operates in eco-friendly manner, i.e. they eliminates sing-use plastic. That's a big plus!!!!

European River Cruises Reviews

It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.
The Wi-Fi didnā€™t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall itā€™s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.
Great company to cruise with. Ship carries 110 passengers. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner each day. Plenty of stops to sightsee. The castles along the Rhine make trip a very enjoyable cruise. All staff were great.

15 of the Best European River Cruises

Explore France, Germany, and more on these European river cruises.

european river cruise forum

Much of the appeal of European river cruises, especially as we emerge from the pandemic with pent-up travel demand, is the small size of the ships, casual atmosphere, and accessibility. Unlike oceangoing ships that carry as many as 5,000 passengers, most river cruise ships accommodate around 150 guests, for a more intimate experience. Balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, and open-air viewing are features of most river cruise ships, and some offer pools, spas, fitness areas, and jogging tracks.

Guests are kept busy (if they wish to be) with daily shore excursions, and most cruises offer several options depending on interests and activity levels. Bikes and walking tours are available in most ports, or guests can choose a leisurely day in a comfortable lounge enjoying the passing scenery.

"River cruises offer opportunities to step ashore in fairy-tale towns and fabled cities. You can immerse yourself in contemporary culture and learn something about the history of the towns along the continent's greatest rivers," according to Ralph Grizzle of River Cruise Advisor . "Sitting on the top deck of a ship under brilliant blue skies, you can gaze on fabled landscapes dotted with castles, villages, and vineyards. A flight of stairs down, and you have all the amenities of a modern hotelā€”restaurants, bars, fitness facilities, spas, internet access, and comfortable staterooms."

With a number of cruise companies and rivers to choose from, planning a river cruise can take some time. Consulting with a travel advisor is always a good idea, and there's plenty of information available online as well. These are the major companies offering the best European river cruises along with examples of their itineraries.

9 best river cruises in Europe

Fran Golden

River cruising in Europe is one of those delightfully slow and easy modes of travel. You're in a small floating hotel, exploring calm inland waters, gliding past castles and vineyards and scenery that changes by the hour.

Daily escorted walking tours and other excursions provided by the river line take you to key UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other city and village attractions you've come to see. Or you can choose to explore on your own, which is easy since your ship often will dock right in town.

Lazy afternoons on the ship afford the time to sit in a lounge chair and watch the world go by ā€” kids swimming from the riverbanks, farmers tending their crops, river birds flapping their wings ā€” as you glide to your next destination.

Which European river should you explore? The choices are broader than you might expect.

The main rivers in Europe are the Danube and the Rhine and their tributaries. They are, by far, the most popular, doable either on one-week segments or longer itineraries that combine areas and sometimes combine rivers. Even if your cruise is only a week, don't underestimate the allure of relaxing for seven days on a river in France or on the dreamy Douro in Portugal.

Here are the best river cruises in Europe.

Upper Danube

european river cruise forum

When it comes to Europe river cruises, a perfect seven-night starter sailing is the Upper Danube, which takes you through centuries of history as you explore Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.

Ships visit such cultural hubs as Vienna, with its opera and art museums and elaborate royal palaces, and Budapest, Hungary, with its magnificent architecture and modern vibe. If your ship passes the Hungarian Parliament building at night, you're in for a treat; magnificently lit, it's one of the most photographed sights on the river.

Along the route, between Melk and Krems in Austria, you cruise through the Wachau Valley, a key wine-growing region producing rieslings and gruner veltliners, with sipping opportunities available. It's also a great place to bike, which is why it's nice to sail with lines, such as AmaWaterways , that carry bikes on board for passengers to use.

You might also have the option of a side trip to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart ā€” and also where several scenes for the movie "Sound of Music" were filmed. A surprise for many is Old Town Bratislava, Slovakia, which might not have been on your must-do list but which charms with its beer culture and castles.

Lower Danube

european river cruise forum

For a deep dive into Eastern Europe's past and present, the fascinating Lower Danube route between Budapest and Bucharest, Romania, explores history from the medieval times and Victorian era of Dracula to the rise of communism and the Bosnian War.

The seven-night river cruise takes you through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. The most beautiful stretch of the river is a 62-mile passage through a gorge between the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains. It's also one of the deepest stretches of river in the world.

Other sights accessed on shore excursions via bus include Bulgaria's Belogradchik Rocks, which are naturally carved towering red rock pinnacles that appear to take forms such as "Madonna with child," and Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria's stunning medieval capital.

european river cruise forum

When it comes to top cruising rivers in Europe, the Rhine wins for natural beauty and fairytale landscapes. A cruise on the river between Amsterdam in The Netherlands, and Basel, Switzerland ā€” a typical one-week route ā€” takes you past expanses of slope-side vineyards, forests and mountains, historic cities and medieval half-timbered villages.

That's even before you get to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 40-mile stretch of river, between Rudesheim and Koblenz, Germany, has castles galore ā€” you might imagine Rapunzel letting down her hair ā€” and Lorelei Rock, the legendary cliff said to distract sailors with the mesmerizing song of a maiden.

The French city of Strasbourg, with its famous Gothic cathedral and robust Alsatian culinary scene, is often a favorite stop on Rhine itineraries, with other highlights including Heidelberg, Germany, and its imposing castle.

Sure, you can catch sight of the Eiffel Tower when boarding a river ship in Paris, but you can do that while staying in a hotel, too. The real attractions of a Seine River cruise are sailing on the river outside the city toward the English Channel and a visit to the beaches in Normandy for a perspective on World War II.

Your visit there and to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, as well as other memorials and monuments to the fallen, is a poignant experience (one that requires a two-hour bus ride from your ship, however). Avalon Waterways brings a World War II expert on board to add insight on select sailings.

Other treasures exist along the Seine, not the least of which is Giverny, the home and gardens of impressionist artist Claude Monet. If you are a fan of his art, much of the property might seem familiar.

In historic Rouen, where Joan of Arc was martyred in the Middle Ages, stop by the Rouen Cathedral (another subject of Monet) before losing yourself on cobblestone streets with wonderful cafes.

Bordeaux river cruises are different from other water routes because you explore two short waterways ā€” the Dordogne and Garonne Rivers ā€” and the Gironde Estuary in Southwest France.

You'll spend more time ashore than floating down the river on this itinerary, with your ship docked for two nights in the city of Bordeaux, a mini-Paris with grand 18th-century buildings. Who cares when you are in the epicenter of French culture, in one of the most celebrated wine regions in the world?

Bordeaux serves up the opportunity to sip Medoc, Margaux, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Sauternes wines as you expand your wine education. You'll visit vineyards and gorgeous chateaus. Your cruise line might even host a dinner at a wine estate one evening. If you plan your cruise for September or October, you'll be able to admire the grape harvest.

Rhone and Saone

Another must for wine-lovers is exploring the interior of France, sipping Cotes du Rhone in such famous winemaking regions as Hermitage and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Provence and Beaune in Burgundy.

Rhone and Saone River cruises typically sail between Lyon and Arles or Avignon, and they're top-loaded with such non-wine attractions as the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard and the Roman Arles Amphitheater, as well as the massive Palais des Papes (Papal Palace) in Avignon. You'll also be able to take in the lavender fields, haystacks and other scenes that inspired painters like Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh.

For a lazy, dreamy, wonderful river cruise experience, nothing quite beats exploring the wine regions of Portugal on the Douro, one of the major rivers through the Iberian Peninsula. The home base for these river cruises is Porto, Portugal, with its historic city center, spectacular bridges and port houses.

On one-week cruises, you'll follow the river 130 miles past green hillside vineyards in the Douro River Valley, a UNESCO-recognized destination, before turning around at the Spanish border. The river cruises typically include a visit to the university town of Salamanca in northern Spain. Viticulture is very much the lesson en route, as you learn about port production on the "River of Gold."

Due to fluctuating water levels and narrow passages, the Elbe is a challenging river that runs 680 miles between the Czech Republic and Germany. Historically, it formed part of the border between East Germany and West Germany.

River cruising here is a rare experience. Viking River Cruises is one of the few lines that visits (another is the French line CroisiEurope), offering 10-day itineraries that combine hotel stays in the cities of Berlin and Prague with a stretch of river between Prague and Wittenburg, Germany.

The cruises are on ships built specifically for the Elbe route. They stop in places such as resurgent Dresden, heavily bombed during World War II but expertly rebuilt; the Saxon Switzerland region of Germany with its striking sandstone rock formations; and the spa town of Bad Schandau.

The Po River in northern Italy is tidal, making it another challenging waterway. However, it affords the opportunity to combine a visit to Venice with a river cruise. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises does the Po in high style with its 126-passenger S.S. La Venizia, completely decked out with a sense of place, from Fortuny fabrics and Murano glass to its gilded accents.

The one-week route doesn't take you far but does include the walled city of Padua, the charming fishing village of Chioggia, and the culinary mecca of Bologna.

For those looking for a longer experience, Uniworld cleverly combines a Po cruise with luxury rail journeys to places like Istanbul, Switzerland and beyond.

Featured River, Small Ship and Land Journeys

Inspired by the destination.

For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

@pontac , that sounds like what I put my TA through... šŸ™‚ Ā Good thing she puts up with me, although I am doing more and more of the research for her.

Pontac I tried to find an emogie that was - laughing, crying, tearing its hair out and sticking its tongue out at the same time but failed, so my advice - should you wish to take it - keep on whatever hair you have left and do what us Brits always attempt to do - chin up and carry on, think a certain wonderful suite of films!

I can understandĀ  why people use TAs.

I don't know re TAs. We just don't use them much over here. I quite enjoy all the detective work putting together a cruise or other form of holiday (they do exist!). It's part of the anticipation and enjoyment of it all.

I'm actually probably a TA's worse nightmare. I research (like 2-3 years ahead) so I know what to expect and what I can possibly see. So when I email my TA to tell her I'd like to book "x" cruise, she goes ahead and pre-books it, so when I stop in later that day to go over things, she *thinks* she is starting off well. She knows what cabins we like, so that's ok, but it's all the double checking I do for sales etc. that keeps her on her toes...and the flights. We always ask Avalon to make a note on file that we may be using their air, but even for my cruise next May (2025) I've been checking the flights they provide so she will know what ones to check. šŸ™‚ Ā

Pontac, would Mrs. P like travelling by train instead of plane? You are lucky in Europe, your trains are so much better than ours.

2 hours ago, Nippy Sweetie said: I don't know re TAs. We just don't use them much over here.

I'm in the country bordering your south, and we don't use TA's. For the 16 river cruises we've taken I have booked direct with the cruise line.Ā

But the work involved in this one trip makes me envy those who've found a good TA who knows their business.

54 minutes ago, Daisi said: would Mrs. P like travelling by train instead of plane?

Mrs. P likes (the idea) of train travel. In fact that was what swung her agreeing to the Bordeaux trip with Scenic.

But I found out that Eurostar arrives in the north of Paris but the train to Bordeaux leaves from the south of the city. So I called Scenic and found they didn't provide transfers. When pushed they suggested using the Metro but I didn't reckon two old codgers would enjoy manoeuvring cases down to the Metro, up at the other end, then dragging them to the station, finding the platform and hauling them onto then off the train...

Anyway the cruise in 2020 was nixed by Covid and again in 2021. For 2022 I unilaterally switched to air as there's non-stops London to Bordeaux and all we needed was to get our cases to check-in.

However Scenic booked us indirect flights involving an outward change at Paris and inward change at Amsterdam and flew us out a day early. (seeĀ  Review of Beautiful Bordeaux 11 day cruise on Scenic Diamond from 17 August to 27 August 2022 with comparisons to Viking - River Cruising - Cruise Critic Community Ā for the story.)

Since Brexit Eurostar travel hasn't been so easy and Eurostar have recently reduced the numbers of passengers per train because of long delays at passport control.

OK, I have been avoiding Paris as long as I can...big cities terrify me, to many people. I was thinking more of your cruise for the Douro. šŸ™‚ Ā

38 minutes ago, Daisi said: I was thinking more of your cruise for the Douro.

We'd still have to cross to mainland Europe with Eurostar if we were going by train all the way. That'd involve 3 trains London>Paris>Madrid>Porto - 21+ hours

If we fly to a nearby city then train then that's worse than taking a connecting flight.Ā

@pontac Ā Peebles can be nice at this time of yearĀ  šŸ˜„

Haha

We Eurostared it for our South of France cruise that was London to Lyon and return but Iā€™m not to sure if they still offer this service. What may be of interest to Mrs P would be to have your luggage couriered it has to go a bit before and arrives back after you do and of course you to pay but itā€™s absolutely brilliant no cases to lug around they arrived on time really good service this was for our Seine cruise.

Excellent Advice!

18 hours ago, Daisi said: OK, I have been avoiding Paris as long as I can...big cities terrify me, to many people. I was thinking more of your cruise for the Douro. šŸ™‚ Ā

I get this...Ā  the terrify comment.

I was born and raised in Toronto.Ā  Largest city in Canada.Ā  Small by other cities that I have visited like Beijing, Tokyo, New York, etc., but big to me.

My niece was raised north of Toronto in a small rural town.Ā  The first time as an early teen that she was in Toronto with me to see a stage show, she grabbed my arm walking down a busy Yonge Street downtown Toronto and asked me:Ā  "Why does everyone look at you like they want to kill you?"

I never looked at it like that.Ā  I just saw the looks on people's faces as the persona of the city.

Paris is a beautiful city.Ā  I actually find the hoards of people around to be a comfort.Ā  I am more concerned if I am walking or moving about in a deserted area of a big city.Ā  The crowds are comforting to me.

Now Porto is a small compact interesting city not a bustle in sight. Salamanca is similar! Some of these small European cities are really quaint no fuss no bother wonderful eateryā€™s and bars and occupants who actually have time to stop and chat. Or go out to the countryside to the local villages itā€™s well worth it. I really donā€™t do big cities now but at heart Iā€™m a Londoner born and bred I remember full well following my mum through the inner city at first really scary but I soon got used to it as our capitol city is really an amalgamation of small villages and towns.

Paris is so beautiful though. However, Paris CDG airport is terrifying. We once had a 45 minute connection time and IĀ  still have nightmares about it. Staff stunningly unhelpful! Luckily, OH has nerves of steel and pushed his way to the top of the passport queue while I trailed behind apologising to everyone. Others were crying as they'd missed their flight. It was really awful. We made it just as our gate was closing. That was for a cruise on Azamara Onward and with flights organised by them. Never again.

Iā€™ve found the French quite pleasant as long as theyā€™re not in Paris! šŸ˜†

I've never been to Peebles, so I hope @Nippy Sweetie Ā will forgive meĀ but I booked Unforgettable Douro 28JUN24 - 08JUL24 with a balcony cabin with Scenic today.

Our host on this board @Host Jazzbeau Ā has recommended this cruise as being the only one that takes a bit longer than the others 7 day zip up and down the Douro.

Mrs P won't fly TAP after being bumped last time, so we are flying BA/Iberia Business Class via Madrid. This avoids early starts and has the benefit to us of using LHR instead of LGW.

The lousy (I don't know if I'm allowed to say 'crap') Scenic website doesn't have ship floorplans, so when offered the choice of two cabins I couldn't see where they were, butĀ I've since dug out the brochure and see I've got the rearmost middle deck. Just glad to get any,

Host Jazzbeau

Host Jazzbeau

@pontac Ā glad you found something that ticked all the boxes. Ā I can understand the issues about flying TAP, although I made it even worse by booking an Azores Airlines flight through TAP ā€“ neither one has great customer service and both sent me to the other on every question!

Glad you found something that meets your OH's stringent stipulations @pontac .

I remember being on a TAP plane and actually seeing my case being left on the runway! It was returned to me the next week looking rather the worse for wear. Needless to say, they'd loaded OH's case! TAP? Grrrrr!

Glad you found something. To tell the truth, the websites for both Scenic and Emerald are so bad, I gave up even looking to see what they have. I am amazed that they are so user UNfriendly.

What is even more disturbing is they didnā€™t use to be, okay you had to look but it was all there. Do you think itā€™s something to do which the qlitches last year? Plus havenā€™t they just announced changes in how they talk about their cabins. Iā€™m beginning to think Iā€™ve had the best years of what used to be an excellent company which now seems to have been taken over by dolts. I can understand them directly employing their staff Ā but I have a horrible feeling they are letting their cruise directors have to much control, they are not directly employed and switch between cruises as they require and decide. Over the years weā€™ve watched their various captains grow and gain experience (there must be something with the company because they stay) we watched the young man on the Douro Cruise gain his experience with the company from our first Seine cruise to being more qualified than the full Captain as he returned to the ship to navigate through the Napoleon bridge, whilst on our second Seine cruise two of the captains gained their qualifications to navigate Honfluer harbour. Iā€™m beginning to think a ********* company starting to go to pot.

We have travelled with AMA, Avalon, Uniworld, Scenic, Emerald and Viking. As I mentioned before, DH & I feel there are more similarities than differences.Ā  We have travelled some rivers twice (Seine, Rhine, Danube between Nuremburg & Bucharest...).Ā  We just love river cruising - and look for different experiences.Ā  For example, our 1st river cruise was with Uniworld on the Seine. We re-sailed the Seine with Avalon - and had different stops... so - same river, different vacation.

The VERY best cruise director we ever had was on Scenic - when we did a Tulip Time cruise with them.Ā  Conversely, the worst one we had was also on Scenic. Local tours guides are usually quite good with all lines, but sometimes you get a dud.Ā  Again - no control over this.Ā

We have only done one AMA cruise.Ā  It was OK, but not phenomenal.Ā  We are booked on our 2nd with them this May --> on the Douro.Ā  I went looking for dates, then prices - and compared the 2 companies that had what I was looking for. AMA is a bit more money, but we are getting extra days on our pre & post-cruise portions. Just happy to be on the rivers...Ā Ā

10 Things You Should Know Before Your First European River Cruise

T wenty-fifth wedding anniversary! Where did the time go? And most importantly, what should we do to celebrate? A few days later, with suspiciously perfect timing, a Viking river cruise advertisement dropped into our mailbox.

Two decades ago, we tried a Caribbean ocean cruise ā€” big ship, lots of people, so much food and drink ā€” and never did a second one. But a European river cruise sounded appealing: smooth water, a new city every morning on a small ship with less than 200 passengers, top-notch food and a customizable mix of culture, lectures and activities.

Ten months later, we were flying to Budapest, Hungary to begin our 11-day Passage to Eastern Europe on Viking Cruises. Here are 10 things we learned from our first river cruise:

1. Youā€™ll Wind Up Feeling Young Again

If you are in your 50s and miss that young and spry feeling, you could do worse than go on a river cruise. We knew the average age would likely skew into the 60s, but we did not anticipate being the youngest couple on our ship. Nor did we mind. Being surrounded by seniors in their 70s and 80s having a great time seeing new places was an inspiration for our own future.

2.  You Wonā€™t Find Too Many First-Time Cruisers

Those folks a generation ahead of us have been busy. We didnā€™t stand out just because of our relative youth, but also because this was our first river cruise. Nearly everybody we met had cruised before ā€” not just with Viking, but other lines around the world as well. Ron, a former Army master sergeant, was on his seventh Viking cruise and even admitted to doing the 15-day Grand European Tour from Amsterdam to Budapest twice.

ā€œIā€™d do it a third time if they let me do it for free,ā€ he told us.

3. Water Levels May Cause Unexpected Detours

A huge river cruise appeal for my wife was the absence of ocean waves. No waves = no seasickness. But, unlike the ocean, river levels rise and fall. Too high, and the river ships canā€™t pass under certain bridges. Too low and, like us, the ship may have to stop short of some destinations and passengers will spend extra time on the bus. For us, low water levels triggered shore excursion substitutions in an unexpected Bulgarian city as well as a longer bus ride to Bucharest. Disappointing, but manageable. In other cases, passengers might have to abandon their river ship and bus transfer to an identical one upriver to continue the journey. Be prepared.

4. Every Day Is Casual Day

We were going to be in Europe, cruising on an upscale boat, and our fellow passengers would be older than us; accordingly, my wife and I planned to dress nicely: collared, button-down shirts and sleek sweaters and blouses. Viking emphasizes no formal dinners and a relaxed vibe, but I still almost brought a jacket for the evenings.

Iā€™m glad I didnā€™t. Our fellow passengers overwhelmingly embraced comfortable casual ā€” bright, plush sneakers; jeans; shorts and even a few Harley T-shirts ā€” it was all okay.  There were definitely people like us, avoiding the jeans and sneakers look, and if you want to dress nicer, go for it, but itā€™s not necessary.

5.  Embrace Conversation

If you fear initiating new conversations with new people several times a day, a river cruise might intimidate you. Fear not. Most of our experienced river cruiser passengers seemed to crave meeting new people and were easy to chat with.

In our first 24 hours on the ship, I listened to a tale about an encounters with Perth Australia gold miners gone wrong, met a guy who got a Purple Heart when his helicopter crashed in Vietnam, admired the mangled fingers of a 75-year-old New England hockey player and listened to our dinner companion say, ā€œI would not have married my husband if I had to do it again.ā€ With him right there.

How Expedition Cruising Appeals to the Adventurous Traveler

6.  iā€™ll have both entrees, please. .

Yes, river cruise food is delicious. Nearly every meal featured regional specialties of the neighboring country. A few minutes before dinner seating began, the chief chef would describe his culinary creations to select from that evening. It was like a halftime speech. Heā€™d finish up and weā€™d all race (or, in some cases, shuffle) out of the lounge to the dining room, pumped up for the coming delicacies.

Yet, as good as the shipboard food may be, take some time toā€¦

7. Eat Locally

Donā€™t confine yourself to only the refined ship meals. A few steps away from your docked ship youā€™ll probably find flavorful local food well worth nibbling on. Some of my favorite meals of our trip were a platter of cevapcici eaten under a portrait of Uncle Tito (the Cold War era Yugoslav leader) in Belgrade and some meltingly lovely pumpkin phyllo pastry in Croatia.

8. Pace Yourself

With a new city each day and limited time, you can exhaust yourself trying to do too much. At one point, our new friends, Victor and Leslie, admitted that they signed up for too many excursions. There is only so much anyone can sample in a few hours or even a day, and we accepted that. A travel memoir I found in the shipā€™s library, Far and Away , gave a satisfying response to that dilemma: ā€œAlways leave something for next time, something to tempt you back.ā€  Youā€™re on a cruise; make some time to simply relax on the sundeck or terrace, admiring the views.

9.  Find a Less-Traveled River

Ever heard of the Iron Gates of the Danube? I hadnā€™t either. Every passenger was out taking photos as our ship slipped into this dramatic gorge between Serbia and Romania. At one point, the giant face of an ancient Dacian king carved into the rock wall stared back at us.

Other European rivers plying well-traveled countries like Germany, the Netherlands and France host most river cruise traffic, but we delighted in discovering more unfamiliar East European countries. Every day gave us new stories and perspectives, often containing history that weā€™d never heard of. Nor was all of this history ancient. On successive days we got thoughtful perspectives from a local Croatian tour guide and then her Serbian counterpart on the 1990s Balkan War. When choosing your cruise itinerary, consider the lesser-known places.

10. Cabin Class Choices Matter

After choosing a cruise date and itinerary, you pick your cabin class. I agonized over that. Budget limitations dictated the cheapest, er, ā€œmost affordableā€ cabin for us, down on the lower deck and featuring only a narrow window just above the waterline. My online research emphasized that most of our cabin time would be at night when it was dark anyway.  Moreover, even during daylight hours, the ship would often be parked next to a dock or sandwiched between other cruise ships with someone elseā€™s window inches away.

All of that was indeed true. And once on board, it was obvious that even the most spacious cabins could not compare to the nearly 360-degree views from the outdoor terrace and top sundeck where passengers gathered in the sunny afternoons. Still, I would have enjoyed more window space in our stateroom. Next cruise maybe Iā€™ll spring for the fancy veranda cabin.

European River Cruise

What is the best time of year to do a European River Cruise? Are there problems with the rivers being too high for the bridges after rain? Also when are the towns very crowded with summer tourists?

Lou, I also agree with Frank that travel in the fall would likely be the best time. I've also been considering a river cruise on a future trip, possibly next year. I received the new Viking Cruises brochure in the mail yesterday, which renewed my interest on that type of travel. Cheers!

My preference is sept/ oct. Great weather less rain. Generally high water and low bridges is a spring time problem.

I would go along with what Frank said. In September to early October the weather should be good and the crowds should be down. High water usually is in the spring. That being said, there is no way to guarantee the weather. All of the data is just the average conditions and there are no guarantees. Last year in France in late Septmber we had three weeks of what pilots call severe clear and warm temperatures and nobody could remember the last time that had happened. On the other hand a fiend of mine was in the Netherlands in April this year and it rained almost every day. The nice part about the river ruise boats is that if the weather turns sour, the boat is a very nice place to be and best of all you don't have to worry about your luggage. Best of luck to you.

Low water can also be a problem. We have just done a Uniworld 8 day Rhine cruise from Amsterdam to Basel. We departed from Amsterdam on 8th April. I enjoyed the fact that all the towns and cities we visited along the way were not over run with other tourists. Ken, if you are thinking of doing a river cruise, check out what Uniworld has to offer. This cruise well and truly exceeded all our expectations.

I am having a tough time finding any information at all, as most search results bring me to Cruise sites or all-encompassing European cruise hire sites, with little or no information on Portugal.

The only site that I have been able to find so far is this one on the Douro - https://douroway.pt/ which gives some good information, but I didn't see any info about getting to the boat from the airport - Train, Coach, Taxi or car hire etc.

We would prefer not to have to hire a car if possible, as it would just be sitting there for the time we are on the boat. But if there aren't other options, that is ok, we could hire.

Any information about all self cruise boat hires anywhere throughout Portugal would be great. Looking for more Southerly but not an overly important option.

The same goes for the type of boat, we would prefer to all be on the same boat, but if we cannot get an 8 - 10 berth to hire, we could get two smaller ones.

Sorry for all of the questions, but as mentioned, I am finding it very difficult to find any information at all.

Also, I see on that link above, if we want to hire the boat without a crew, somebody should have a navigators licence. Where could we obtain one of those? Two of the people going are very competent sailors, and another two own their own cruisers, but none of them know what a navigators licence is.

Thank you for reading, any and all information gratefully appreciated.
