The Tourist

Verenigde Staten/Frankrijk 2010. Actiefilm van Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. Met o.a.

The Tourist

In the Tourist because so much of the computer screens used surveillance video that was going to be shot later, we ended up compositing most of the screens in post production.

film the tourist vpro

In the Scotland Yard set we decided to shoot the screens off so that we could get nice reflections of the actors that we could blend back in with the computer graphics that were built by Coplin LeBleu .

All the 50+ VFX monitor shots in the film were composited in Adobe After Effects .

film the tourist vpro

We also had to match the color and look of the screens that were shot on set.  The three screens behind the 2 standing actors were live on set and the screen on the lower left is one I composited in post.

Again in this shot I needed to replace the bottom left screen with a different surveillance video while still matching the look of the other monitors in the original shot.

Also needed to replace a phone screen in order to make the action of taking Jonny's picture more visible.

The Tourist Season 2: Release Date, Plot, Cast, Ending Explained - Netflix Tudum

Jamie Dornan runs from a car in the wilderness in season 2 of 'The Tourist'

.css-1ylq17j em,.css-1ylq17j i{font-variation-settings:'ital' 1;}.css-1ylq17j strong,.css-1ylq17j b{font-weight:700;} Jamie Dornan Explains The Tourist ’s Complicated, Dance-Filled Ending

“Nothing is ever as it seems on The Tourist ,” Jamie Dornan tells Tudum.

The thriller series stars the Heart of Stone actor Jamie Dornan as Elliot, a man who wakes up one day with no memories and must put together the pieces of his history. While Season 1 follows Elliot as he tries to recover his identity after an accident in the desolate Australian outback, Season 2 takes him to his birthplace in the lush Irish seaside.

“We couldn’t have gotten more contrasting-looking places,” Dornan says of the two seaons, now available on Netflix US. “There’s an element of risk in that, because that dusty, red desert feel of the first season is such a big part of it. Then suddenly going to the totally other end of the spectrum — it all made sense, but very different vibes.”

Elliot thought he discovered who he was at the end of Season 1, but it turns out that was only part of the story. In Season 2, he goes back to his Irish hometown to learn the truth about himself and his family.

Finished Season 2 and want to know more about that ending? You can click the link below to read about it. Otherwise, keep reading to find out about the cast, plot, and additional details of The Tourist ’s adventure.

What’s Season 1 of The Tourist about?

After a terrifying car chase through the Australian outback, Elliot wakes up in the hospital with no memory of who he is or what he, an Irish man, is doing in Australia. With assistance from local cop Helen ( Dumplin ’s Danielle Macdonald ), Elliot is forced to use all the clues at his disposal to uncover his identity before his past catches up with him.

Who’s in The Tourist Season 1 cast?

  • Dornan stars as Elliot, who doesn’t even remember his own name, let alone why someone would want him dead.
  • Macdonald plays Probationary Constable Helen Chambers, an ambitious cop in training who’s engaged but doesn’t seem ready to settle down into small-town life.
  • Shalom Brune-Franklin plays Luci Miller, a local waitress who may have a deeper connection to Elliot than he (or anyone else) realizes.
  • Greg Larsen plays Helen’s mild-mannered fiancé, Ethan Krum.
  • Damon Herriman plays experienced Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers, who pursues Elliot’s case single-mindedly.
  • Kamil Ellis is young Sergeant Rodney Lammon, who’s working with Rogers on his case.
  • Ólafur Darri Ólafsson is the menacing Billy Nixon, an American living Down Under with a special interest in Elliot’s case.
  • Alex Dimitriades plays terrifying Greek gangster Kosta Panigiris.
  • Alex Andreas is Kosta’s brother, Dimitri Panigiris.

What happens in Season 1 of The Tourist ?

After being forced off the road and left for dead, Irish tourist Elliot wakes up in a rural Australian hospital with amnesia. Local cop-in-training Helen takes a special interest in his case, and the two team up to learn more about his identity. A major clue comes in the form of Luci, who turns out to be his ex. They met while on vacation in Bali, and now they’re both caught up in a scheme involving the gangster Kosta, who’s not only dangerous and unstable but regularly takes LSD and confers with a hallucination of his long-dead older brother, Dimitri.

Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers also takes an interest in Elliot’s case, but it turns out that his involvement is more nefarious than helpful because Kosta’s men are holding his wife hostage.

How does Season 1 of The Tourist end?

In the final episode, Luci manages to get a hold of Dimitri, who faked his own death because he wanted to leave the life of crime he and Kosta were leading. But even Dimitri can’t talk Kosta out of seeking revenge for the money Elliot and Luci stole from him.

A shoot-out in the outback leaves Kosta dead and Luci shot, and Luci dies while Elliot speeds to the nearest hospital. He calls Helen to come pick him up, but in the meantime Rogers pins Kosta’s death on Elliot and Helen. The duo are surrounded by cops but Helen has an idea that could get them out of trouble, so they pretend to rob a restaurant to buy them a little more time for Helen’s plan to fall into place. It turns out speed cameras captured Rogers driving with Elliot and completely disprove his accusation, leaving Helen and Elliot to walk free.

However, Elliot is visited by a mysterious woman named Lena (Victoria Haralabidou) who shows him a nasty scar on her stomach and tells him that it’s from the time he convinced her to smuggle heroin alongside two other women, but the baggies burst inside of their stomachs and they both died. She’s left with this nasty scar where a man cut into her to get the drugs out. But when Elliot, who still doesn’t remember who he is, tries to confess to the crime, Lena says she doesn’t know him and he goes free.

Helen, meanwhile, finds out about Lena and tells Elliot she’ll never forgive him for doing something so disgusting. Later, she changes her mind and reaches out — just as he swallows down a handful of pills with some liquor.

What’s Season 2 of The Tourist about?

In Season 2, Elliot and his now-girlfriend Helen travel to Ireland in search of answers about Elliot’s identity, but instead, they’re forced to face the dangerous consequences of his past actions.

Who’s in The Tourist Season 2 cast?

  • Dornan returns as Elliot, who still doesn’t remember his past but is living in the present and traveling through Southeast Asia with his girlfriend, Helen.
  • Macdonald returns as Helen Chambers, who’s broken her engagement and traveling the world with Elliot, until they decide to head to Ireland to learn more about his past.
  • Larsen returns as Helen’s now-ex, Ethan.
  • Haralabidou is back as Lena.
  • Conor MacNeill plays Detective Ruairi Slater, a quiet local cop with more of an edge than first appears.
  • Olwen Fouéré plays Niamh Cassidy, a tough Irish woman with a major connection to Elliot.
  • Francis Magee plays Frank McDonnell, the patriarch of a powerful family.
  • Diarmaid Murtagh is Donal McDonnell, Nessa Matthews is Orla McDonnell, and Mark McKenna is Fergal McDonnell, a trio of locals who take a special interest in Elliot.

What happens in season 2 of the tourist  .

Elliot and Helen have left Australia behind and are trekking through Southeast Asia when they decide to follow a lead who promises information about Elliot’s past. When they land in Ireland, he is kidnapped and they realize the clue was actually a trap.

The McDonnells have kidnapped Elliot, who is actually Eugene Cassidy, a member of the rival Cassidy family. His mother, Niamh, is the their intimidating leader, and there’s a longtime feud with the McDonnells, led by patriarch Frank.

Since this is The Tourist , there’s naturally many more complications to the story: Helen is temporarily held hostage by the cop Ruairi (long story short, she escapes and it’s ultimately unrelated to the Cassidy-McDonnell conflict); Fergal McDonnell’s biological father is Elliot (rather than Donal); and the person who lured Elliot back to Ireland was actually Lena, who wants revenge on Elliot for the death of her friends.

Lena shoots Helen to make Elliot feel the pain she’s felt, and Helen winds up hospitalized in a medically induced coma. Meanwhile, Donal’s wife, Claire (Siobhán O’Kelly), asks Elliot to kill Donal after years of physical and emotional abuse.

How does Season 2 of The Tourist end?

Elliot tells Helen that he didn’t kill Donal, but he’s arrested for it anyway — and she realizes she can’t trust him anymore, regardless of whether he did it or not. She breaks up with him, but before heading back Down Under, she realizes there’s one detail of the case that she can’t shake. Who was the real Elliot Stanley?

Thanks to Helen’s dogged detective work, she learns that the real Elliot Stanley was a man Frank McDonnell hired to investigate the wreckage of the plane crash that killed his father — and Niamh killed him to hide what Frank and Elliot discovered: love letters between their parents.

As Dornan notes, there’s now proof that Niamh and Frank are siblings. “That has complicated things massively, and muddied the water in a huge way. Elliot’s come in and just been thrown into the middle of all this with zero understanding of why it’s like this, and how he’s so caught up in it.” Oh, and it turns out that Niamh killed Donal, too.

Helen realizes that her Elliot is the good man she thought he was, and they get back together as she helps him embrace new things he’s learned about his past — like the fact that Eugene Cassidy is supposed to be a fantastic dancer. Elliot tries his hand at ballet, and it transpires he really has a gift.

Dornan, however, does not . “I’m not a dancer naturally, I would say. I did have to do a fair amount of training,” he confesses. “Obviously there’s many moments where that’s not me. I wish I could move like that.”

A dance sequence at the end of a murder/kidnapping/organized crime mystery? “There’s very few shows that could get away with an ending like that, but I think they’re allowed [it] because of the unhinged, off-kilterness of the whole entire arc of the show — you grant them that strangeness of that dance at the end,” Dornan says.

Where could The Tourist go next?

That dance doesn’t actually cap the season — the final scene  reveals a dossier on Eugene that points to his true true identity: He’s a secret agent. What does that mean for the show’s future?

“I think it’s purposely open-ended,” Dornan says. “I think this time they are leaving that to all kinds of factors –– of if and when and how that would happen to do more –– and to see if people want more. But that’s also a timing thing. Everyone’s busy! I’m busy, Danielle’s busy. So we will see, but they’ve definitely left the option open, I think.”

When does Season 2 of The Tourist premiere?

Both seasons of The Tourist are now streaming on Netflix US.

Who made The Tourist ?

In Season 1, Harry and Jack Williams and Christopher Aird are executive producers for Two Brothers Pictures (an All3Media company). Tommy Bulfin executive produces for BBC, and Chris Sweeney is also an EP.

In Season 2, the Williams brothers also executive produce, alongside Dornan. Sarah Hammond and Daniel Walker executive produce for Two Brothers, and Nawfal Faizullah is an EP for the BBC.

Jamie Dornan’s turn in The Tourist will make you forget about Christian Grey

With the belfast star in the driver’s seat, hbo max’s six-part series piles on the twists, turns, and the occasional acid trip.

Image for article titled Jamie Dornan’s turn in The Tourist will make you forget about Christian Grey

It takes a big person to admit that they were wrong, which makes it so hard for an actor to shift the established opinion of them within the culture and critical establishment. It seems that HBO’s The Tourist may just do something truly Herculean, and make all the Jamie Dornan naysayers admit he’s actually a pretty good actor.

Not that people were without reason to doubt Dornan’s talents. When he first came to international attention, it was as Christian Grey, a kinky but bland billionaire in the 50 Shades trilog y. Those films were never considered high art, but have aged like warm milk, along with Dornan’s comments that he researched his role as the serial killer in The Fall by stalking unsuspecting women. But credit where it’s due—Dornan now joins the ranks of Robert Pattin son, Kristen Stewart, and former co-star Dakota Johnson as a person who made interesting choices after their franchise ended and looks to become one of our credible millennial actors. The actor delighted audiences in recent hits like Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar and Belfast .

This six-episode HBO Max series starts with one of the great tropes of melodramas—total amnesia befalls a handsome stranger after a terrible car crash, leaving him unable to remember so much as his own name. A kindly rookie police officer named Helen (Danielle Macdonald) takes pity on him and hopes to help him recover some, if not all, of his memories. Armed with nothing more than a note with a restaurant name and a time, the man sets out on his quest to figure out who he is and what he is doing in the remote Australian outback. To say much more would spoil much of the fun, and boy, is The Tourist fun. Some of the early twists follow may well-worn paths, but there’s no way to predict the roller-coaster ride ahead.

Macdonald gets to use her native Australian accent to play a character with parallels to Fargo ’s beloved Marge Gunderson, a folksy moral compass whose instincts prove invaluable. But where Marge was a well-respected detective in a loving marriage, Helen can only dream of the same. She is undermined both professionally and personally. One of the most enjoyable supporting characters is her spectacularly awful fiancé Ethan (Greg Larsen), who shames her for eating burgers, complains about her desire for high thread-count sheets, and labels her ambition as “delusions of grandeur” (which he repeatedly mispronounces). Even in a world of abundant brutality, it’s not hard to want a little more of it pointed in Ethan’s direction. It’s a credit to Larsen’s performance that he creates a man so intolerable, it’s worth continuing watching just for Helen’s inevitable realization that she’s far too good for him.

Though a good breakup is reason enough to stay engaged, The Tourist also does great cinematic work in its action sequences. We open with the amnesia-causing incident, where Dornan, driving alone in a dusty compact car through the Outback, singing along to Kim Carne s’ “Bette Davis Eyes,” is pursued by a giant truck. At first, it seems like he’s just come across an asshole driver, but the moment it clicks that this is a many-wheeled high-speed weapon is utterly terrifying. The chase feels more horror film than TV action sequence, a tone that runs throughout the many moments of violence The Tourist puts on screen. Every crunch of bone, severed artery, and choke of breath feels visceral and impressively horrific. Much like Fargo , part of the fun of The Tourist is breaking up humorous moments among sweet local eccentrics with breathtaking cruelty. And those tonal shifts are expertly employed by the supporting cast, particularly Shalom Brune-Franklin, Damon Herriman, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Alex Dimitriades, who pack all the intrigue of film noir alongside some great humor and convincing derangement.

Twists aside, The Tourist lags in the middle act, but is buoyed by a distinctly adult tone—there’s a gameness to it that makes the scary, horny, and darkly comic elements work well in tandem. Each twist (and they’re deployed every 15 minutes or so) beyond the second episode lands with full weight, particularly in the final episode where Dornan’s acting chops reach their apex.

It’s hard to imagine that The Tourist will have a seismic impact—the era of excellent television is a thankfully crowded one, and little here breaks new ground. But it’s an absolute hoot to travel down the series’ dusty Australian roads, taking in the trippy, almost Lynchian tangents through fractured minds and broken memories. Anti-hero narratives are familiar for a reason, and The Tourist keeps them as compelling as ever; even when it treads familiar territory, it’s never a bore. The paradigm of TV thrillers may not be shifted, but many people’s perceptions o f Jamie Dornan will never be the same.

HBO Max's 'The Tourist' Is an Intensely-Wild Thriller of Twists and Turns You Cannot Miss (Review)

By Tania Hussain - March 2, 2022 05:42 pm EST

Since first launching last spring, HBO Max has released one of the deeper catalogs among its streaming competitors with programming from the HBO vaults, Warner Brothers, TCM, Criterion, and Studio Ghibli. But as great as the roster is for audiences hungry for movies and shows at their fingertips, it's their Max Originals that are setting up the streamer as a unique and brilliant offering for voracious watchers. The latest series to drop on HBO Max is its intensely gripping six-episode limited series The Tourist , which you cannot miss when it premieres Thursday, March 3. The stylish, dark comedy thriller is one of the best this season as it will keep you guessing until the shocking ending.

Earning a perfect 100% freshness score on Rotten Tomatoes following its overseas debut this past winter, The Tourist doesn't waste any time with this high-octane series from Two Brothers Pictures' Harry and Jack Williams ( The Missing ). Reminiscent of Joel and Ethan Coen films like  Blood Simple , Raising Arizona ,  Fargo  and  No Country for Old Men , the neo-Western is one of 2022's best new series for audiences and one to revisit because there is so much more to see and discover, especially after watching it.

jamie-dornan-1.jpg

Starring Jamie Dornan in a role that will make you forget Christian Grey , the HBO Max series kicks off with an intense, nail-biting car chase — well, more like an 18-wheeler truck chasing down a sedan in the barren outback. Keeping you on the edge of your seat from that very moment, The Tourist springs into action after the driver of the sedan (played by Dornan) is flung off the road by an intimidating, sinister whistling truck driver (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) from the Deep South. Waking up in a hospital with no memory of who he is and just a piece of paper in his pocket to retrace his steps, the victim known simply as "The Man" must piece together his past to find out who wants him dead. With the help of the very transparently kind, rookie Constable Helen Chambers — an anxious traffic cop played by Danielle Macdonald — the two embark on a wild journey, including a strange phone call from a man buried underground. Safe to say, things get a lot weirder.

But to share any more details about The Tourist  and all the twists and turns The Man encounters would most definitely spoil the fun and honestly, this show is the most fun audiences might have had in months when it comes to streaming programming. Taking audiences on a legit rollercoaster from the first episode to the very last, the series might spark predictions for watchers amid the series' natural progression. Still, they will not be one bit close to the conclusion. Not to mention, it is very ambiguous and open-ended, so there could very well be a possibility of more to come if the creators and cast are on board.

Written and executive produced by Jack and Harry Williams, the creators have written a ton of thrillers over the years for British TV between The Missing and Baptiste , but The Tourist is one that feels structurally, tonally and cinematically different . Brimming with themes of identity and working out who you are, The Tourist is a very self-assured series that is equally appealing because of its resonance with our daily struggles surrounding individuality. Crafted with a real sense of distinction and accuracy thanks to directors Chris Sweeney and Daniel Nettheim, the show is an impressive piece of TV that plays to both the thriller genre and dark comedy side of writing with authentic and honest dialogue that often borders humorous. There is so much to love with The Tourist , especially through its well-drawn-out and wildly eccentric characters with their quirks and charms. Dornan, who leads the cast, is immaculate in this role and makes great use of his diverse range of acting credits as he plays this broken-down man. He manages to blend every emotion The Man experiences so eloquently through his expressions and words, and you can most definitely feel that through the screen. Starring as a blank-slate guy bordering complexities of confusion, frustration, cynicism, sarcasm, and anger, the performance sits high among his other acclaimed roles, as seen in The Fall or Belfast . Moreover, his acting talent hits a new level of awesome as he balances the character's nuanced tone flawlessly while rising to the more humorous directions the writing calls for versus the bold, contemplative, wide-eyed panic, particularly with the final episode where we see his character at the forefront of a newly discovered life.

As for Macdonald, the infectiously likable Australian actress has such a delightful on-screen presence as she helps make the darker tones a lot brighter with her genuine warmth. Feeling a lot like a compass for The Man, Macdonald's Helen is no doubt the heart of the show as her kindness is admirable and one that feels real as she looks for a connection amid a very toxic relationship with her fiancé Ethan (Greg Larsen). The newbie cop struggles with her weight and appearance but finds herself in top form while on the job, helping others — especially The Man. With all her quirks and a keen eye for details, Macdonald's portrayal of Helen also has some big Marge Gundersen a la Fargo energy.

But it's the growing friendship between Helen and The Man that plays beautifully to the show's drama too. Macdonald and Dornan have incredible chemistry and a charm that makes their dynamic really easy to watch and want to see more of. Whereas the Irish actor can play dark and broody, Macdonald is chipper and bubbly with her naiveté, balancing his character's aggravation well. The two are supported most amazingly by Shalom Brune-Franklin, who plays a mysterious waitress eager to help The Man; Ólafur Darri Ólafsson who plays the American — a character reminiscent of Leonard Smalls in Raising Arizona ; and, Damon Herriman of Justified , who plays a detective intrigued by The Man.

jamie-dornan-6.jpg

The Tourist is a welcome and necessary binge this season, and so much fun. It never slows down nor has a moment in between the six episodes that will have you turning to your phone for the occasional check-in. It is most earnestly and effectively, an edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting thriller that will keep you glued every minute with its twists and turns. The unpredictable, dark comedy is interesting and quirky, and just an overall breath of fresh air as it's produced and performed exceptionally well. Accentuating themes of antiheroes and identity all wrapped into six compelling hours, The Tourist might tread the familiar ground with some Coen brothers sentiments, but it is uniquely a product all its own thanks to Dornan for a massively entertaining ride.

The Tourist  stars Jamie Dornan, Danielle Macdonald, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Alex Dimitriades, Damon Herriman and Genevieve Lemon.  The Tourist  begins streaming Thursday, March 3 on HBO Max . Positive Messages

The movie's strongest message is that everyone is both good and bad, light and dark, and those who love you accept you completely as both.

Positive Role Models

Shaw puts his love of money and possessions above all else. Alexander might have stolen from an awful man, but he's still a thief, and Elise is a rogue character who makes questionable professional and personal decisions.

Violence & Scariness

A kingpin and his gangster henchmen try to kill Frank and Elise several times, chasing them on speed boats and through the streets/rooftops of Venice. A man is throttled to death, and four or five men are killed by police snipers.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Elise is pretty much sex appeal personified. She's presented as being so stunning that men and women stop in their tracks to stare at her as she walks by. One of the uses of "f--k" in the film is inspired by the sight of her in an evening gown. There are a couple of passionate kisses, as well as one scene of Elise changing into a lacy nightgown (viewers see her in her bra, stockings, and underwear).

Occasional strong language includes a couple of uses of "f--k" plus "a--hole," "s--t," "hell," "bastard," and "oh my God."

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Language in your kid's entertainment guide.

Products & Purchases

The Eurostar train system is featured pretty heavily, and the logo is shown a few times. Venice's ultra-luxurious Hotel Danieli is one of the movie's main locations.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Several people smoke cigarettes, and Frank smokes nicotine-releasing electric cigarettes. People are shown drinking socially at dinners and a party.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this romantic thriller starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie is the kind of twisty suspense drama that will appeal to savvy teens who like the two stars. The premise is simple but mature, and as the movie progresses, certain plot twists make The Tourist more appropriate for older teens and adults. There's some persistent violence in the form of a frightening older gangster who has no problem killing his own henchman and is responsible for the film's (relatively small) body count. Language includes a couple of uses of "f--k," as well as "s--t" and "a--hole." Although sexual content isn't too graphic -- Jolie and Depp's characters kiss passionately a couple of times, and, in one scene, Jolie strips down to her undergarments to change into a nightgown -- there's still a strong feeling of sexuality throughout the movie, as Jolie's mere presence creates an aura of sex appeal. not for children

This is a fantabulous movie, what's the story.

Elise Clifton Ward ( Angelina Jolie ) is an Englishwoman who lives in Paris and is being surveilled by both French and English authorities for her past relationship with a mysterious billionaire thief named Alexander Pierce. One morning, she receives instructions to board a train bound for Venice, find a man with Alexander's height and build, and make "them" believe it's him. She targets Frank Tupelo ( Johnny Depp ), a Wisconsin math teacher on a solo vacation. Smitten with Elise, Frank agrees to go to Elise's hotel, where she kisses him and then explains that she's meeting a secretive man she once loved. Meanwhile, Elise and Frank are being watched not only by a Scotland Yard agent ( Paul Bettany ) and his Italian collaborators but also by notorious gangster Reginald Shaw (Steven Berkoff), who wants the billions Alexander stole from him. Since Alexander has reportedly spent millions to change his appearance, everyone on the case believes Frank really is Alexander, so the race is on to save him before he's arrested or killed.

Is It Any Good?

THE TOURIST's look and feel are refreshing tributes to Alfred Hitchcock 's classic thrillers, in which mysterious, beautiful women on a train usually spelled trouble. Jolie is perfectly cast; she's the kind of actress you can believe would have every single man (and woman) in a train car staring at her. But Depp is a bit miscast as the wide-eyed Frank, who looks cool (because he's Johnny Depp) but is actually awkward and unaccustomed to the sensual sophistication that Elise exudes with every swish of her hips. Their flirtatious conversations are sweet and funny, but there's not the kind of electrifying chemistry you'd expect (for perfection, see Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in North by Northwest ).

Still, for travel and fashion junkies, this film is a decadent treat (every single thing Elise dons is gorgeous). Even with all of the movie's eye candy -- from Jolie to Depp to Bettany to Rufus Sewell (as a silent character who may or may not be the real Alexander) -- chances are you'll probably be busier ogling Jolie's ensembles and her hotel suite at the luxurious Hotel Danieli. The romance? It's all right. But the costumes and scenery -- absolutely swoon worthy.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how the movie fits into the suspense genre . Early on, Elise and Frank joke about the stereotypes of suspense novels. How does the movie play by the very same rules they discuss?

Elise explains that she was raised to believe that to truly love someone you have to accept their "two sides" -- good and bad. How do the various characters in the movie show their "two-faced" nature?

What's the movie's message about relationships? Do you think Elise made the right choice? What did Reginald mean when he told Elise that life isn't kind to an ugly woman?

“The Notebook” star Gena Rowlands, 94, has Alzheimer’s disease .

Her son Nick Cassavetes, who directed the beloved 2004 rom-com, revealed his mom’s diagnosis to Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday.

Rowlands’ character in the film had dementia. She played the older version of Rachel McAdams’ Allie.

James Garner and Gena Rowlands in "The Notebook"

“I got my mom to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer’s and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she’s had Alzheimer’s,” said Cassavetes, 65.

“She’s in full dementia. And it’s so crazy — we lived it, she acted it and now it’s on us,” he added.

Rowlands’ mother and Cassavetes’ grandmother, actress Lady Rowlands, also had Alzheimer’s.

Gena Rowlands and Nick Cassavetes at the 2014 Savannah Film Festival

Rowlands starred in “The Notebook” with McAdams, Ryan Gosling, James Garner, James Marsden and Kevin Connolly. The movie is based on Nicholas Sparks’ 1996 novel.

The year the film came out, Rowlands opened up to  O magazine about the experience of playing a character with Alzheimer’s after her mother faced the same disease.

James Garner and Gena Rowlands in "The Notebook"

“This last one — ‘The Notebook’ — was particularly hard because I play a character who has Alzheimer’s. I went through that with my mother, and if Nick hadn’t directed the film, I don’t think I would have gone for it.”

“t’s just too hard,” Rowlands added. “It was a tough but wonderful movie.”

Gena Rowlands at the 2016 Oscars

Rowlands is an accomplished actor with several Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards.

Earlier in her career, she often collaborated with her director-husband John Cassavetes, who died in 1989. Their films included “A Woman Under the Influence” and “Gloria,” both of which earned Rowlands Oscar nominations.

At the 2015 Oscars, Rowlands earned an honorary Academy Award. That same year, her son presented her with the Academy Honorary Award at the seventh annual Governors Awards.

“I didn’t think for a minute I was going to get it,” she said about getting her honorary Oscar in an interview with the LA Times. “I think it’s awfully nice.”

Gena Rowlands in "A Woman Under the Influence"

She also looked back on “The Notebook” and said she loved the “whole idea of love lasting forever.”

“The kids — Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling — were such good actors. I was happy to work with Jim Garner,” Rowlands said. She added, “Everyone said it must be hard to work for your son. I guess when you feel loved, everything is easy.”

Nick Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands

The actress’ latest film was the 2014 comedy-drama “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks.” Her last television role was in an episode of “NCIS” in 2010.

Rowlands and her late husband had three children together. Her daughters Alexandra and Zoe are directors, just like their brother.

She got remarried to retired businessman Robert Forrest in 2012. They are still together.

Motorcyclist died when Royal Mail postman forced her into path of tourist bus, court hears

Prosecutors say Andrew Wallace opened his van door in an act of ‘wilful neglect’, causing a collision with Helen Bater’s handlebars

Andrew Wallace outside Winchester Crown Court

A female motorcyclist died when a Royal Mail postman opened the door of his van and forced her into the path of an oncoming tourist coach, a court has heard.

In an act of “wilful neglect”, Andrew Wallace sent Helen Bater careering into the tour bus carrying North American holidaymakers on their way back from visiting Stonehenge, jurors were told.

The motorcyclist was travelling last in a line of seven others on their way to a bike show before the fatal collision on the afternoon of September 17 2021.

Mr Wallace, 62, said he didn’t see Ms Bater’s yellow Yamaha as he opened the door “fully”, causing a collision with her handlebars and resulting in her veering into the path of the coach.

Prosecutors allege Ms Bater - who was in her 50s - was “there to be seen” and died as a result of his actions.

At Winchester Crown Court in Hampshire, Mr Wallace denies one charge of causing bodily harm by wilful neglect of a vehicle.

Opening the trial, prosecutor Eleanor Fargin said the fatal collision took place while the group was on their way to an event near Andover, Hampshire.

“On September 17 there was a group of seven - six motorcycles and one pillion - who met at Warminster services, intending to go to a motorbike show at Weyhill,” she said.

“Within the group was Martin Fletcher and his partner Helen Bater and they were going to meet Ms Bater’s brother and friends.

“Rather than taking the A36, they said they would take B-roads as it was a more scenic drive.”

The court heard Ms Bater had been in possession of her motorbike licence since 1996 and was an “experienced” motorcyclist.

Helen Bater

Ms Fargin said the group was travelling in single file, with Ms Bater bringing up the rear.

“They were making their way on the road when they came towards the Royal Mail van,” she said.

“This van had been parked on that carriageway and Mr Wallace had got out to try and make a delivery.

“As he comes back, he stands at the front of the vehicle and the motorcyclists go past him.”

The court heard that at this point a tour bus was coming from the opposite direction of travel, on the other side of the road.

“[Ms Bater] was going about 18-21mph,” said Ms Fargin.

“Mr Wallace opened the door, initially slightly, and then further for him to get in.

“The opening of the door causes contact with the handlebar of Ms Bater, causes her bike to veer and she is run over by the coach.

“The injuries sustained were not compatible with life and she died at the scene.”

The court heard Mr Wallace told police he had heard the first few motorbikes, but didn’t hear or see Ms Bater and “wasn’t aware she was there”.

‘Very brief moment with very big consequences’

“We say she was there to be seen, on a yellow motorcycle, had a headlight on,” said Ms Fargin.

“He was walking towards her and thought he had room, space and time.

“A very brief moment with very big consequences.

“We say it is wilful neglect.”

Calvin Folkes, who was driving the coach at the time of the collision, said he had no time to take evasive action.

The coach driver of 20 years, who was transporting around 54 American and Canadian tourists from Stonehenge to Bath, said he saw Mr Wallace carrying a package back to his van.

“All I remember was something hitting the bottom of the bus,” he told jurors.

“And then I had to brake hard and come out of the vehicle and park up.

“Next thing I knew there was a person on the floor with significant injuries.

“All I could do was brake and secure my vehicle.”

The trial continues.
