The Vines Golf Club:

Acclaimed as one of Western Australia’s best golf courses, The Links Kennedy Bay is beautifully undulating and a true links course in the Scottish and Irish traditions. The course is fully irrigated however dry all year round, with its sandy base is exceptionally fast running and tight. The gently undulating Windsor Green fairways wind through sand dunes amongst western coastal wattle, grevillea, sedges and lilies. The excellent large Bent greens are all one would expect on a true links — firm, fast and true.

Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club:

Opened in 1987, Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club offers ‘golf as nature intended’. The course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr., presents a highly regarded test for players but is also renowned for its playability. During its short history the West Australian Open Championship has been held at Meadow Springs on seven occasions. Measuring 6189 metres from the blue tees, the golf course promises a unique experience through open bush land, the layout dictated by the natural features of the land. Towering 200 year old Tuart trees line generous fairways and subtly rolling greens. Few holes run parallel enhancing the sensation of being alone in the wilderness.

Secret Harbour Golf and Country Club:

Graham Marsh design reflects the style of traditional Scottish links with fast running couch fairways (Windsor Green on the original ‘Links’ nine and Wintergreen on the’Dunes’) opened in Feb 1999 pitted with well-positioned pot bunkers. Red Fescue highlights the light rough and surrounds the pure 1019 Bent grass greens which are a delight to putt on. All around the coastal sand dunes are covered with western coastal wattle, coast beard-heath, grevillea, coastal banjine, sedges and lilies. Black kennedia climber runs over sand and shrubs.

The Cut Golf Club:

The Cut Golf Course is located just an hour’s drive from Perth by the popular seaside town of Mandurah. Voted Western Australia’s number one golf course in 2008/09, ranked in the country’s top 20 public access courses, and in the top 25 overall courses in Australia, The Cut is a must play golf course for all golf enthusiasts visiting Perth and the Mandurah area.

Lake Karrinyup Country Club is widely acknowledged as Western Australia’s premier golf club, consistently ranked number 1, and currently ranked number 15 in Australia (2020 Australian Golf Digest).

Just 15 minutes north of the Perth CBD, Lake Karrinyup is a tranquil botanical haven for wildlife including many native birds and kangaroos. Lake Karrinyup is renowned for its challenging layout; lush couch fairways and manicured 007 bent grass greens.

Royal Fremantle Golf Club

Royal Fremantle is one of the few golf clubs that still occupies its original site. The course can be tamed on a still day, but when the prevailing sea breeze, colloquially known as the “Fremantle Doctor” arrives, after midday, only the best swings can survive.

Royal Fremantle at 6168 metres is not long by modern standards. Plans are in place to lengthen some tees as part of regular course maintenance and development plans but this will be done only in keeping with the original intentions which were to provide a course for all players and to encourage participation in the sport.

Royal Fremantle is not solely about providing a championship venue for professional tournament play to be utilised once a year. The course is well maintained with clearly defined Kikuyu fairways that are amongst the best all year round in the country, tidy tee boxes and Bent grass greens that are deceptively quick. However, when a shot goes astray the penalty is fair and there is always a chance to manufacture a shot from under the trees to get the ball back into play.

Melville Glades Golf Club

Located only 20 minutes from the Perth CBD, Melville Glades is one of Western Australia’s most loved golf courses. Melville Glades is a private 18-hole parkland golf course that is nestled within tranquil bushland surrounds.

The stunning course offers an amazing variety of golf holes, putting surfaces and excellent year-round conditioning, along with a modern and elegant clubhouse and function centre.

The Vines Golf and Country Club

The Vines Golf and Country Club is ideally situated in Western Australia’s picturesque Swan Valley. The Valley is Western Australia’s oldest wine-growing region, now boasting more than 30 wineries, together with arts and crafts, historic buildings dating back to Colonial settlement, and numerous restaurants and fresh produce outlets.

This tranquil location seems a world away from the stresses of suburbia, yet surprisingly The Vines is a mere 30-minute drive from the Perth CBD. The Vines features 36 magnificent golf holes and has played host to a wide array of professional golf tournaments such as the Heineken Classic, Johnnie Walker Classic and the LPGA Lexus Cup.

Royal Perth Golf Club

Royal Perth Golf Club is located just a few minutes from the Perth CBD and situated on the banks of the Swan River. The Club has a strong history dating back to 1895 when it commenced on Burswood Island before moving to Wattle Grove Farm, Belmont in 1900 and then to its current site in 1908. The prestigious Club is the oldest in WA and was awarded Royal Charter in 1937.

Built on less than 30 hectares (74 acres) the founders have left a great legacy for generations of golfers over the past 100 plus years. The golf course is built on a flat terrain with narrow fairways requiring accurate placement from the tee. Being an “old style” course, the greens in general are small in size making them elusive targets, especially when the sea breeze sweeps in off the adjacent Swan River.

The outward nine has three par 5’s making it a par of 37 and, apart from holes 6 and 9, borders the golf course bringing out of bounds into play for errant shots moving from right to left. The inward nine is played inside the course boundaries and has a par of 35 with the 18th being the only par 5. Generally the back nine is a little more difficult with three tough par 4’s (holes 10, 13 and 16) to negotiate.

By modern standards Royal Perth is not long measuring just over 6000 metres. Despite this the golf course challenges the very best players with narrow fairways and renowned firm fast greens. Whilst there is little rough on the course there are near on 80 bunkers increasing the degree of difficulty.

Sun City Country Club

Designed by Bob Green of Golf and Recreation Planners and the club’s first captain Murray Dawson, the golf course at Sun City Country Club is one of Western Australia’s favourite layouts.

A major highlight of any round at Sun City has always been the long sweeping breaks on greens which seem to keep their secret until just after the impact of putter on ball.

Another unique fascination of the course is the length of many of its holes, demanding good use of every club in the bag, including long irons. This fascination is made even more acute off the tee, where the many dogleg fairways demand a perfect line into the outside of the corners.

Set in a rolling parkland terrain featuring ancient Tuart and Gum trees, Meadow Springs is a distinctively Australian golfing experience with typical Robert Trent Jones Jnr call signs- dramatic greens and bunkering 

2. The Links at Kennedy Bay

Although the sea is rarely sighted from the course, this is a real scottish influenced hard and fast links style course with revetted pot bunkers. Play it in the wind- it is a wonderful test of golf..

3. Secrets GC

A Graham Marsh design with two distinctly different nines, Secrets is well bunkered and stategically strong. It will suit the thinking golfer!

4. The Cut GC

Located in dramatic dunesland right on the coast, The Cut is probably the first course in the area golfing groups should pencil in. But the combination of multiple blind shots and strong coastal winds can prove a difficult propostion for many. Keep the ball in play and you will fall in love with The Cut!

Sand, undulation and kangaroos typify Western Australian golf. The wonderful limestone base that extends from Yanchep to Busselton is also famous for the grand Tuart gums that thrive only in these alkaline conditions.

Just 45 minutes south of Perth lies a 15-km stretch of coastline rapidly gaining fame as the WA Golf Coast. At the heart of this area is the city of Mandurah, a popular seaside destination at the head of the Peel Inlet with a great array of accommodation and eateries. With the Harvey River Estuary, the region has an incredible 130 square km of waterways and wetlands where birds from Siberia and Alaska migrate to feed.

Graze your way through Margaret River with visits to gourmet food producers, some of the many award winning winery cellar doors and possibly some of the areas many microbreweries.  This region, characterised by suburb growing conditions for many wine grape varieties, produces a massive 20% of Australia’s premium wine.  Meandering from cellar door to cellar door today is easy and spectacular, with vistas of farmland, wine country and the coast.

Cottesloe Golf Club is a well manicured private member’s club, with wide sweeping fairways and fast greens. Founded in 1908 the Cottesloe Golf Club established its first links course close by the sea in the then sparsely populated Perth suburb from which it took its name. It has a great variety in hole length – from driveable par 4 holes to exacting long holes with a smattering of everything else in between and set over a varied topography.

The Links Kennedy Bay is situated amidst undulating sand dunes and natural bushland. It has a magnificent northerly vista over Warnbro Sound and the expanse of the Indian Ocean. Exceptionally fast running, tight, dry, gently undulating couch fairways wind through sand dunes amongst western coastal wattle, grevillea, sedges and lillies. The native scrub is reminiscent of Scottish Gorse and Heather.

Secret Harbour Golf Club was designed by the renowned golf architect and player, Graham Marsh and has long been regarded as one of Australia’s best kept links golf courses. Secret Harbour reflects the style of the traditional Scottish courses such as Muirfield, Turnberry and St. Andrews. To all golfers who are used to treelined parkland courses this will present a totally new and exciting challenge, and one to be savoured.

The Royal Perth Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Perth, having been established in 1895. Its been in its current location since 1908, which is convenient and right by the Perth CBD.

Outside of its rich history, the Royal Perth Golf Club has a generous 30 hectares of land, which is enough for its full 18 holes and clubhouse. As a testament to their quality, they received the Royal Charter in 1937.

With that said, the club attracts a certain demographic, especially considering that it’s members-only. If you want to play here without a membership, you need to be invited by a member.

However, if you’re coming from interstate or overseas, you may be able to play. Do note that this is subject to the club’s general manager and requires you to pay the green fee.

Because of the crowd it attracts, you must be prepared that you may encounter some stuffy people who can harm your overall experience. 

There were also some complaints regarding the quality of the food, although many commended the club’s staff for being accommodating and overall kind. Fortunately, we did not hear any complaints about the service of the caddies.

You can also choose to host an event here, such as weddings, birthdays, or company events. Again, you must be a member to host one of these events unless you’re invited as a guest.

2. Collier Park Golf

Collier Park Golf is a public golf park in Perth that’s perfect if you’re starting on the sport and still unsure if you’re ready to invest in a golf club membership.

While they do offer memberships, we appreciate how you can book solo rounds online. The weekdays are generally cheaper, although the difference isn’t that much at just around $5.

You can choose among their full 18 holes, 9 holes, twilight golf, or foot golf. The lowest prices are for twilight golf at $18, and the weekday rates for 9 holes and 18 holes are $26 and $35, respectively.

Because they’re a public park, they do tend to be full, even if you have a booking. They also host other events such as the Silent Book Club, New Dads Social Golf, and other clubs that are meant to promote mental health.

However, if a busy and bustling golf park is your preference, they will the perfect choice. You can also choose to hold your kids’ birthday party here, with the bonus of having a mini golf course for the kids to play on.

As we said, they are perfect for beginners, as they offer services such as golf club repair and adjustment as well as a shared cart hire if you’re looking to save on your expenses.

You shouldn’t expect Collier Park to have the same quality as private golf clubs, especially with the quality of the grass. Multiple people complained of bald spots and muddy areas, so it’s best to be careful.

3. Point Walter Golf Course

Amenities: Golf course, café and bar, mini golf course

If you’re a golf beginner but want a slightly more luxurious experience than golfing in public parks, Point Walter Golf Course is a good middle ground.

They don’t require a membership to play here, and you can even hire equipment such as clubs and trolleys if you don’t have your own yet. Additionally, you can get golf lessons.

You can get individual golf lessons for one to two and a half hours with rates starting at $110. They also offer group coaching for two up to eight people, with rates ranging from $25 to $60 per person.

They only have nine holes, which are charged at $27.50 per person. Many players find this a bit excessive, and we are inclined to agree, especially considering the prices of the competition.

This is also considering some complaints we heard about the quality of their course, although this might depend on the weather and season. Others claimed the course was fine.

However, we are worried about the complaints about the safety of their parking area, with one claiming that their car window was smashed once they returned to their car.

Parking also does tend to be full, especially since the golf course also sometimes hosts events and parties and has some local golf clubs playing at certain times.

To avoid this, we encourage you to check the schedule as to when the local golf clubs will be playing as well as their available schedule for tee time.

4. Wembley Golf Course

Holes: 36 holes

Amenities: Golf course, driving range, mini golf course, restaurant and bar

Wembley Golf Course is mostly members-only, although they also accept bookings for solo tee time. This is a good option if you want to try out their facilities before deciding whether you want to purchase a membership. 

We find them expensive if you book them for solo tee time, so we encourage that you only do so if you want to examine the facilities or if you’re in the Bicton area looking to play some golf.

This is also considering some complaints regarding the lack of maintenance in some areas of their course which had bald patches. Additionally, some guests complained that they had additional charges on their bill after they finished playing.

To avoid being charged extra, we encourage you to request a clear breakdown of costs from their staff before you start playing or using any of their amenities.

If you do choose to be a member, you will enjoy a large golf course complete with 36 holes and access to the driving range.

They offer golf lessons with the option to have your tutor be a PGA professional. However, these are paid lessons regardless of whether you’re a registered member or not.

You are free to enjoy their other amenities such as their restaurant, 300 Acres, although we do encourage you to reserve a slot beforehand, as they do tend to be busy.

5. The Western Australian Golf Club

The Western Australian Golf Club is another prestigious Perth golf club if you’re looking for a luxurious experience while you golf. It’s pretty laidback for a golf club of its reputation, but of course, it’s members-only.

They’re located 8 kilometres away from the Perth CBD, with superb views of the city from their clubhouse and the 12th tee box.

Among all the golf courses on this list, they’re probably the most well-maintained, from the grass to the water features in the course. 

If you’d like to stroll in between holes, you’ll enjoy the lush grounds of the course that’s filled with flowers.

As expected of member-only golf courses, you must be invited by a member if you want to play here. If, however, you’re looking to learn golf, you can make use of their Perth Golf Centre which doesn’t require a membership.

The Perth Golf Centre teaches newbie golf players through virtual golf where you can practice your form and swing before you go out and play a game on the course.

They also have a golf shop that’s open daily, which is great if you’re lacking some gold essentials like clubs, shoes, or shirts.

However, they aren’t free from complaints, as some patrons reported that they weren’t accommodated properly despite being members of the club.

We also heard that the food in their clubhouse is subpar, but it should be okay if you’re looking for a quick snack after completing a quick course.

Four people, including a nine-year-old boy, have been killed in a horror single-car crash on a major highway in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region overnight.

Emergency services were called to the Great Eastern Highway at Clackline, about 80km northeast of Perth, shortly after midnight on Thursday.

In a statement, police said the silver Nissan Navara was travelling east when it left the road and struck a tree.

All four male occupants, aged nine, 19, 21, and 45, suffered critical injuries and tragically died at the scene.
