Travelers rest, sunrift adventures, about greenville.

greenville sc bike tours

Downtown Greenville is a cool place!

Staying true to its roots as a textile center, Greenville has a rich history that makes it one of the most culturally diverse cities in the country.

With a population of more than 100,000 people, Greenville offers many activities, including arts and music, nature, and sports and fitness. Greenville is filled with cultural and recreational opportunities, and there are plenty of natural spaces too.

Locals love heading to  Paris Mountain State Park  on the weekend or going for a night out with dinner at  Pomegranate on Main  and a play at the  Peace Center .

A Brief History of Swamp Rabbit Trail

“Why ‘Swamp Rabbit’?” The trail was named after the Greenville and Northern Railway, which was known as the “Swamp Rabbit” due to its winding routes through swampy terrain.

This railway previously linked Greenville to the nearby city of Travelers Rest and beyond afield. As the railway fell into disrepair, the idea of transforming it into a multi-use greenway developed.

The transformation of Swamp Rabbit Trail began in the early 2000s and was officially opened in 2009. Since then, it has become a popular recreational asset for both locals and tourists, attracting thousands of visits each year.

Overview of the Swamp Rabbit Trail

The Scoop | Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail in Greenville County

This 28-mile trail network extends from downtown Greenville to Travelers Rest, with additional segments near Simpsonville, Fountain Inn, and Lake Conestee Nature Park.

The Loop Trail in Laurens County is a recent extension completed in 2023. It serves as the official beginning point of the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail. Along the trail, you can enjoy views of the Reedy River, lush forests, and sights of local wildlife. Get the official interactive map  here .

One of the best things about the Swamp Rabbit Trail is its accessibility. The trail is mostly flat and paved, making it perfect for riders of all ages and skills and great for families.

Expanding the Swamp Rabbit Trail: Green Line Extension

The Green Line Extension , which parallels Laurens Road and passes through Holland Park, is another important extension of the existing Swamp Rabbit Trail in Greenville, SC, that was completed in June 2023. This extension allows bikers, walkers, and runners to travel safely and conveniently from Greenville Zoo to Verdae Boulevard.

The project involves the construction of new trail segments and infrastructural improvements to connect these areas. The extension project is a joint effort between the city and county, making it easier for people to enjoy outdoor activities, commute, and explore the city on this trail.

Swamp Rabbit Trail Etiquette

Following some basic trail etiquette is crucial to ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone on the trail:

  • Stay to the right side of the path. When passing, show some Southern hospitality by saying “on your left” or using your bell.
  • Remember, this is a greenway, not a racetrack. Maintain speeds of less than 20 mph, especially while passing others.
  • Dogs are welcome, but they must be leashed, and owners must clean up after them.
  • Respecting nature and the environment by not littering and staying on designated paths is also essential.

How Long Does it Take to Bike the Swamp Rabbit Trail?

As a bike trail, the time it takes to travel the Swamp Rabbit Trail in Greenville, SC, depends on several factors, including your pedaling pace, the starting point, your fitness level, and how many pauses or detours you take along the way.

Here are some ballpark figures:

Full Trail (End to End) : If you biked the full 22-mile length of the Swamp Rabbit Trail from Greenville to Travelers Rest without many stops, you could finish in about 2 – 3 hours at a moderate pace.

Sections : If you only plan to bike a specific section of the trail, the time will obviously be reduced. For example, biking from downtown Greenville to Furman University, which is roughly 8 miles one way, might take about 45 minutes, depending on your speed.

Leisurely Ride : If you want to take a leisurely ride, stop at points of interest along the way, and enjoy the landscape or a meal along the way, it can take much longer. You can actually make a full day out of exploring the ins and outs of the trial, while stopping along the way for refreshments and to see some of the attractions.

Best Things to See, Eat, and Do along the Swamp Rabbit Trail

Once you reach a spot with a softball field, stationary train, parked cars, fountains, and benches, you’ll be at  Furman University . It is the oldest private university in South Carolina and has a beautiful campus full of magnificent buildings.

Whether you choose to ride past it or take a short detour to explore the grounds, this historical gem is only 6 miles from downtown Greenville. The Revival of the Greenville Cycling Classic Shows There Are Still Enthusiastic Bike Racing Fans

Greenville hasn’t hosted big time bike racing since 2016, but that all changed with the revival of the greenville cycling classic this past thursday..

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

Greenville, South Carolina, has a 30-year history of hosting bike races. The inaugural event was the Michelin Cycling Classic and was raced each year from 1986 to 2000. The name was changed to the Greenville Cycling Classic in 2001 and continued until 2006.

The Tour DuPont started and finished here in 1995 and returned for a stage finish in 1996. It has hosted the US Professional Road Race Championships, ParaCycling World Championships, and the US Professional Criterium Championships.

Other than the annual Gran Fondo Hincapie that started in 2012, Greenville hasn’t hosted big time bike racing since 2016, but that all changed with the revival of the Greenville Cycling Classic this past Thursday, which was the first stop of the Speedweek Series.

Criteriums are a staple of cycling here in the USA and attending the races in person brings back a lot of memories of the early stages of my career and development as a cyclist. I believe that I would be safe in assuming that most of us participated in a criterium as our first race.

I remember the days of racing around cones in a parking lot, business parks, or inside an unbuilt housing development that just happened to have paved roads. Other than family or a couple of friends, those races weren’t pulling in the big crowds as much as downtown courses like the one here at the Greenville Cycling Classic.

There is nowhere to hide in a criterium as everyone on the side of the road sees exactly where you are and how you look each lap. As a rider, you are also aware of how your own personal condition, experience, confidence, bike handling, and tactical skills stack up against your competition. It is often a reality check.

When you are on form, focused, and well positioned in the pack, criteriums are a lot of fun! You know where you can move up safely, how to take each corner, and who are the best wheels to follow. The rush you get from hearing the cheering spectators and the announcer’s voice coming over the speakers on the home straight on the bell lap is something special, but that is when everything goes right.

Crashes, flat tires, and other mechanical mishaps can not only spoil your race but cost a lot of money to replace. When I was quite young, an older rider told me, “Flesh heals, Campagnolo doesn’t!” It sounds crazy, but I think most cyclists check their material before checking their injuries. I have seen riders hugging their bike and rolling on their back during crash scenarios. We all know how much cycling equipment costs these days, so I don’t blame him for doing that.

In all bike races, but especially in criteriums, it all comes down to the little details. You can be hitting personal best power numbers in training all week, but if on race day, you forget to pay attention to the details, it can be a nightmare scenario played out in front of thousands of people on race day.

  • You must arrive to the start/finish in plenty of time so that you are not rushed.
  • Check your equipment and tire pressure.
  • Pre-ride the course as many times as you can in attempt to find that perfect entrance/exit point of each turn.
  • Find a place to warm up and stay calm.
  • Get your fueling and hydration right.
  • Get a good position on the start line, especially if you are not called to the front.
  • Execute your race strategy as best you can but be prepared to pivot.
  • Don’t crash☺

I thoroughly enjoyed watching all the categories of races last night at the Greenville Cycling Classic and it reminded me that we all started off our first race as a Cat 5 racer. Every single one of us had to go through the same experience of overcoming our fears and fighting for results to get those coveted upgrade points. Some succeeded and some failed, but we all started in the same place.

As the afternoon turned to night, the number of participants got larger, and the speed got faster and faster. I know that I used to race these same events back in the day, but I kept thinking to myself, “how did I used to do this?” I was very happy and content being on the other side of the barriers than the brave men and women that raced and entertained the great crowd.

greenville-cycling-classic-2024

In the middle of the packed schedule, there was a “Ride with Tour de France Legends” event in which George Hincapie, Christian Vande Velde, and I rode with riders of all ages for 20 minutes. We were called to the line by another Tour de France Legend, Frankie Andreu. The ride was a blast but unfortunately Frankie was working as the announcer and couldn’t join us.

I know that the sport of road cycling is suffering in the USA a bit at the moment, but I was happy to see so many new people exposed to such a great event for the first time last night. Just like we all start as Cat 5 racers, we all start as Cat 5 fans, so let’s take the time to explain our great sport to newcomers and motivate more people to get on bikes and experience our passion for the sport of cycling.

Hundreds compete in Greenville Cycling Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — Hundreds of cyclists rode through Greenville as part of of the Greenville Cycling Classic.

Thursday’s event featured amateur and professional cyclists from across the southeast.

“They might go 40 to 50 laps,” Tor Bennstrom, an organizer of the Greenville Cycling Classic, said. “Each lap could take a minute, so 40 or 50 minutes. They could be doing anywhere from 25 to 35 miles per hour going down our streets.”

Cyclists rode through the heart of downtown as people of all ages cheered them along.

“I’ve watched the Tour de France and some other cycling events but never here in the city,” Ryan Patecell, who attended the competition, said. “It’s really cool to see just the speed at which the cyclists move and the competitiveness of the races.”

Dillard Townley was one of the first winners of the day. He finished first in the Men’s Category 4/5 race.

“The course is really great,” Townley said. “I liked how there were so many turns. It was pretty hard having to stay in the front the whole time like that.”

This was the first cycling competition to be held in Greenville since 2016. Bennstrom said the city provided an ideal backdrop for the races.

“For anybody who likes to ride a bike and comes to Greenville, without hesitation and without any fail, they constantly remind us all that this is a fantastic place to ride,” Bennstrom said.

As the sun set, the crowd prepared for the biggest and longest race of the day where 130 professional cyclists competed for the grand prize.

“That will be about an hour and a half race,” Bennstrom said. “70 laps. That will be thrilling. It’s like a freight train flying down the street.”

The competition is part of the Speed Week Race Series. Races will be held in Spartanburg on Friday and in Athens, Georgia on Saturday.
