Welcome to Halifax

Halifax is in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. The people of the Mi’kmaw Nation have lived on this territory for millennia, and we acknowledge them as the past, present and future caretakers of this land. Historically, a land acknowledgment is a traditional practice shared amongst Indigenous groups to recognize the Indigenous land and territory they are visiting. Today a land acknowledgement remains a way to express one’s gratitude to the Indigenous people for being stewards of the land that we live and work on.

Halifax's Newest Attraction!
Photo: Larry Daley
RMS Titanic
Our world class Titanic & Iceberg exhibit features actual items removed from the ship prior to the maiden voyage, Harland & Wolff artifacts, and science related material from the wreck site. We also have authentic movie props gifted by James Cameron, to friend Larry Daley, the exhibits owner.
Exhibit founder Larry Daley first landed a job doing logistics work for RMS Titanic Inc. who were diving to the wreck of the Titanic in the summer of 1998. Little did he know that he would end up diving the wreck himself and becoming good friends with James Cameron, director of the 1997 film "Titanic." See actual props and items used during the filming of the movie as well as other amazing artifacts & collectibles.
Our Titanic exhibit is interactive and fun for the whole family. Dive into over 111 years of history and science as you tour the two levels of this facility.
Learn about the story of the RMS Titanic and her fateful end though interpretive displays, videos, and a simulator, while viewing science related items recovered from the wreck site. Whether you are a history buff or not, this exhibit is sure to entertain and amaze the whole family!

We had a great time the tour was very good Halifax is very beautiful If you get there enjoy
Paul Mc Neil was awesome. The tour is listed as a 4 plus hour tour and we were with him for almost 7 hours. It was fantastic. I can't believe that one person could know so much about this beautiful city. He had great knowledge on History, architecture, government and the local museums and restaurants. While driving around he would show us contrasts from old to new buildings. He had lots of historical pictures on his large iPad to show us at different locations. He even had small video clips of some historical events. We hit all of the highlights of the city including a cemetery where some of the Titanic victims are buried and the Citidel. We were there for the firing of the cannon at Noon. Very knowledgable about the Titanic and the infamous Halifax explosion during world war 1. We had lunch in Fisherman's cove in a private room and we put in an order ahead of time so we did not have to wait at all. He said that it was the best fish and chips and he was not kidding, truly the best fish & Chips I have ever had and I don't general like fish. I could go on and on but let me just say that you CAN'T GO WRONG BOOKING PAUL.

Thank You Mike H for taking the time to review your Tour of Halifax
Absolutely Outstanding Tour... Let me just start by telling you that Paul has a passion for history in general and Halifax in particular...and it shows. The van in which we traveled was clean and comfortable. Paul's commentary as we traveled between stops was interesting and intriguing. He took his time and happily answered our many questions. It felt as though a friend or relative from Halifax was driving us around and showing us the sights. Lunch at the Wharf Seafood Restaurant in Fisherman's Cove, an off the beaten path, local eatery that I'm sure no one else will take you too, was more than outstanding. The fish and chips were so good they might just be worth a trip back from New Jersey. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour to anyone visiting Halifax and I would also recommend booking early. Paul has a very well deserved reputation and the limited seats available fill up quickly.
We had Emerson as our tour guide. He was fantastic. The Ford Expedition was very comfortable for the four of us. He was very knowledgeable and took us to the changing of the guard , beautiful gardens as well as the titanic cemetery. We also ate at a lovely seafood place for lunch. Such personal interest in our group and a great conversationalist he was!
Thank You Marci J for taking the time to review Your Tour with Emerson
We were lucky enough to book Paul McNeils Halifax Titanic Historical Tour on September 20, 2019. This is a really grand tour. The tour vehicle was so comfortable and Paul was simply a wealth of information. We were so pleased that Halifax weathered Hurricane Dorian so well. We arrived in Halifax two weeks after the hurricane and much of the debris was already cleaned up. Halifax is a beautiful city. Paul explained that the two events that shaped Halifax were the were the explosion of 1917 and the sinking of the Titanic. We visited 2 Titanic cemeteries, which was very moving. We also visited an actual working fishing village and ate at the Off the Hook restaurant. The fish was some of the freshest we have eaten. Paul has a large tablet mounted in his van and that allowed him to show us pictures and videos all day. Paul is so organized and this was one of the best tours ever. Don't miss the chance to learn about this wonderful city.

Thank you Lindsay for your very kind words
We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Paul is both knowledgeable and passionate about the rich history of Halifax. The tour lasted over six hours and was such fun that the time flew by. I highly recommend this tour particularly for cruise ship passengers who are only stopping for the day.

It’s a journey you’ll remember all your life. This tour takes you to two of Halifax’s most popular sites – Peggy’s Cove and the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, the final resting place of 121 passengers of the Titanic. Your tour begins with breathtaking wooded coastal views along the Lighthouse Route as you make our way to the historic community of Peggy’s Cove. Hear how glaciers and constant pounding from ocean waves have shaped the world-renowned village’s granite shores. See the lighthouse that has been an inspiration for generations of writers, photographers and painters, and the famous deGarthe Monument, which artisan William deGarthe carved in the coarse stone.
Take time to explore the shops and galleries around this working fishing community before returning along St. Margaret’s Bay to the Fairview Lawn Cemetery. Your kilted guide will walk the grounds with you, bringing the tale of the great ship’s ill-fated maiden voyage to life. Discover the true identities of the unknown child and J. Dawson, both recovered from the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Their stories are part of a legacy that continues to fascinate visitors over 100 years later.

Halifax Titanic Cemeteries
Visiting the Titanic cemeteries is a heart-wrenching experience. I was not sure what to expect and found myself pondering what it must have been like for the people on the Titanic that fateful night. And what it must have been like for the people of Halifax and how the tragedy overwhelmed the city.
I did not see the cemeteries as a tourist attraction but as a place to pay solemn respect to all who perished as well to those who survived. A visit to these sites can be quite emotional given the extent of the tragedy.
The 3 cemeteries used were Fairview Lawn (121 graves), Mount Olivet (19 graves) and Baron de Hirsch (10 graves). Each cemetery has informational panels indicating the location of the grave sites.
I met a lady from Australia when I was there. Her great uncle perished in the sinking and she was looking for his gravesite. She did not seem to know much about what else there was to see so I gave her my map of the titanic interest points. She was so grateful. She was amazed at the Halifax connection to the Titanic.
The layout of the tombstones at Fairview Lawn is interesting. They are arranged in the shape of a ship's hull. Most of the grave markers are the same. These ones were paid for by the owner of the Titanic.
Some graves remained without any names for a long time. Modern technology has helped to identify those graves. Information markers in the cemeteries explain how this came about.
Did you know there are many Titanic connections throughout Nova Scotia? There are numerous community museums and locations who have displays, collections and stories about the Titanic . Check out my eBook, The Titanic in Nova Scotia , and learn where you can find them.
The 'Unknown Child'
One thing that cannot be missed is the grave of the ‘ unknown child ’ at Fairview Lawn. This can be especially heartbreaking. When no one came forward for the little boy, the crew of the Mackay-Bennett took care of the funeral arrangements. It was the crew of this cable ship that had found him.
To this day, visitors leave flowers and teddy bears for the baby. This is probably the most sought after gravesite in all of the Titanic cemeteries.
It is remarkable that 95 years after the disaster, DNA testing was able to identify the child as Sidney Goodwin from Britain. His parents and siblings also perished but his body was the only one recovered.
And then there is the pair of child ’ s shoes that were donated to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in 2002. They came from the family of a police sergeant who was working in Halifax at the time of the disaster.
The Halifax police department was given the responsibility of guarding the personal belongings of victims. A small pair of shoes was among the belongings. Instead of seeing the shoes destroyed the police sergeant kept them.
The story and the shoes remained in the family. The sergeant ’ s grandson decided in 2002 to donate the shoes to the museum.
Do you want your BEST vacation ever in Nova Scotia? Contact me about my Itinerary Planning Service . I'll help you design your DREAM vacation!!
After much investigation the museum was sure that the shoes were authentic. They were also very sure the shoes belonged to the little boy known as the ‘ unknown child ’ . These shoes were very important in the investigation to the child's identity.
The shoes are now on display in the museum. Halifax will never forget little Sidney Goodwin.

Bizarre Titanic mystery could finally be solved after 30 years
One of the greatest mysteries to ever occur on a Hollywood film set could soon be solved after almost 30 years.
‘Can’t do it anymore’: Star’s name change call
Bridget Jones’s Diary sequel plot revealed
Hollywood star finally confesses to rumours
There really are no words that can adequately describe the powerful chokehold the blockbuster film Titanic had on people who lived through the 90s.
We fell in love with the stunning and misunderstood Rose, with her fiery red locks and sharp wit.
The masses fell head over heels for the boyishly handsome Jack, with his weirdly hot suspenders and cheeky smile.
We all wanted a love like Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet had in the 1997 hit. But do you know the grim truth behind the making of the film?
As it turns out, it wasn’t all romantic couch sketchings and steamy hands on windows.
On the very last day of filming the masterpiece, a whopping 80 people – including director James Cameron and actor Bill Paxton – had to be hospitalised after their food was poisoned.
An innocent chowder was the culprit, with a mystery person unscrupulously lacing it with the psychedelic drug PCP, otherwise known as angel dust.
The substance, officially known as phencyclidine, is a mind-altering drug that can lead to hallucinations and psychosis, but can also work as a stimulant, depressant and anaesthetic.
What actually happened?
It was the night of August 8, 1996, and was meant to be the crew’s last day of filming in Nova Scotia.
They had wrapped up all the ‘modern day’ scenes and the team were ready to move on to Mexico, where a gargantuan reproduction of the doomed ship was waiting for them on an outdoor soundstage in Baja.
Filming at strange hours, the crew had a break to eat their “lunch” at around midnight, where a local catering company had provided, amid other options, chowder.
The truth about the exact type of chowder served that fateful night has been lost over time.
Cameron himself says it was mussels, while Paxton was certain it was clam. Halifax Police at the time reported it to be lobster.
Whatever the case, it was potent. Cameron told Vanity Fair that he suddenly began feeling “distinctly woozy” and thought the soup may have contained a “paralytic shellfish neurotoxin, which is very dangerous”.
He immediately stepped away to vomit. When he returned, things began spiralling.
“I get back to the set and nobody’s there.” he recalled.
“I’m standing at the monitors, near the camera, and the room is empty. It was like the twilight zone.
“Some people were laughing, some people were crying, some people were throwing up.”
Around 80 crew members were sent to the nearby Dartmouth General Hospital, where the unbelievably chaotic scenes descended even further into madness.
“Eventually we all got put in these cubicles with the curtains around us, but no one wanted to stay in their cubicles,” set painter Marilyn McAvoy told Vice .
“Everyone was out in the aisles and jumping into other people’s cubicles. People had a lot of energy.
“Some were in wheelchairs, flying down the hallways. I mean, everyone was high!”
Cameron was even stabbed in the face with a pen by a crew member and recalls watching helplessly as his team fell apart.
In the middle of it all, a random conga line began to form.
“I was sitting there bleeding and laughing,” he said.
“People are moaning and crying, wailing, collapsed on tables and gurneys. The D.P., Caleb Deschanel, is leading a number of crew down the hall in a highly vocal conga line.
“You can’t make this stuff up.”
Still under the assumption that the team had an extreme case of food poisoning, the medical staff asked them to ingest liquid charcoal.
However, a toxicology report later revealed that PCP was to blame for the madness.
The whole incident has gone down in history as one of the most bizarre things to have ever occurred on a Hollywood movie set.
Over the years, some have even speculated that the tale was simply folklore, a fairytale conjured up by someone with a wild imagination.
But Cameron himself confirmed to Power that it was a “100 per cent true story.”
“You haven’t lived until you’ve been high on PCP,” he told the outlet on the 25th anniversary of Titanic.
“Which by the way, I do not recommend to anyone.”
Report to be released
After all these years, there is still one question that remains.
Who on earth spiked the Titanic crew’s chowder?
For a long time, it was unknown. The Halifax Police Department investigated the matter for two and a half years, even executing a warrant for Department of Health records and getting a list of every person who had worked on the set.
But with no leads, the case was officially closed on February 12, 1999. They never made their findings public.
However, this could all change after the information and privacy commissioner of the Halifax Police Department, Tricia Ralph, ordered that the unredacted report be released to the public earlier this month.
If Ralph succeeds, the 10 page report could be available in mid-May and might finally shed some light on the incident that’s baffled and intrigued movie lovers for nearly three decades.
Until then, we can only speculate, but there have however been theories floating around.
The catering company’s CEO Earle Scott, told Entertainment Weekly at the time that it was “the Hollywood crowd bringing in the psychedelics”.
“I don’t think it was purposefully done to hurt somebody,” Scott said.
“It was done like a party thing that got carried away.”
While Cameron has never named names, he has his suspicions.
“We had fired a crew member the day before because they were creating trouble with the caterers,” he told Vanity Fair.
“So we believe the poisoning was this idiot’s plan to get back at the caterers, whom of course we promptly fired the next day. So it worked.”
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were away at the time and did not eat the chowder, and thankfully Gloria Stuart, who played older Rose, was eating at a restaurant that night so was not harmed.
Despite the short hiccup, Titanic went on to be one of the most successful films of all time .
It was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won 11, including Best Picture and Best Director.
The film’s iconic soundtrack, which includes Celine Dion’s song My Heart Will Go On , further contributed to its enduring popularity.
More Coverage
With a budget of $200 million, it went on to make $2.264 billion at the box office.
It became the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide in 1998, beating Jurassic Park (1993).
The iconic remained at that spot for twelve years, until Avatar (2009), also written and directed by James Cameron, surpassed it in 2010.
La La Land and Poor Things actor Emma Stone has said she would prefer people to now call her by her real name.
Details of the fourth Bridget Jones’s Diary film have been revealed – including the hunky young star set to play Bridget’s love interest.
Glen Powell has finally come clean about his movie co-star Sydney Sweeney following months of speculation.
