Day Cruise from Athens: Hydra, Poros, and Aegina Islands with Key Tours

If I could retire on an island, I would.

T and I really enjoyed our trip to Athens and it’s definitely recommended to visit Greek Islands as well. However, if you’re on a tight schedule and you can’t really pick an island, well, why not pick three? Three islands, one day.

Poros Greece Tour Day Sea Cruise

I’m usually not a fan of tours in general as I like to travel at my own pace. However, we had a lot of ground to cover and it turned out to be roughly the same price if we were to do the three islands without the tour. Let me introduce Key Tours!

Our One-Day Cruise from Athens with Key Tours to Hydra, Poros, and Aegina Greek Islands

I came across Key Tours online and the reviews definitely varied.

We had previously booked the Half-Day Acropolis Tour in Athens , which was actually very informative, covering all that what was necessary.

And so, T and I signed up to the day cruise form Athens to enjoy a relaxing day on the sea to discover the three beautiful Greek Islands of Hydra, Poros, and Aegina.

All transport (from Athens to each island) was included, which made it very convenient. We were picked up near our hotel by a luxury bus, and then dropped off at the port where we boarded the cruise ship.

Key Tours Day Cruise from Athens

At each island stop, we had free time to discover the island.

It took two (miserable) hours to reach our first stop. Guys, please EAT before boarding a boat. Do NOT board a boat on an empty stomach. Have a light sandwich and a pill for sea-sickness. I didn’t eat, I took the pill, and I was so sea-sick that I was in hell for the entire two hours it took to arrive to Hydra. In summary, EAT.

Poros Greece Tour Day Sea Cruise

Stop #1: Hydra

We had 1 hour and 45 minutes to spend on Hydra.

Hydra is, as I like to describe it, the Greek island of (really fat) cats and timid donkeys. Hydra is unbelievably beautiful.

There are no cars or scooters here, which adds to the island’s charm. The only modes of transport are donkeys and water taxis. We didn’t ride a donkey, but we took loads of pictures while discovering the island on foot.

We got ice cream from Karamela  by the port; it was oh-so-creamy and delicious. A much needed treat after the trauma I experienced to get here!

Hydra Karamela Ice Cream Greece Vacation

Back on the Boat!

A buffet lunch awaited us next on the boat. Note that drinks aren’t included in the tour package; even water, which I thought was ridiculous since we were spending a whole day on a boat and in the sun. The lunch was okay – nothing to write home about.

Key Tours Cruise Buffet Greece Travel

Stop #2: Poros

We arrived to Poros next with about 40 minutes to spend, so we made each and every minute count.

First stop, ICE CREAM! T and I wanted to sample ice cream on every island.

Poros was ever so picturesque and seemed the closest to an authentic Greek island without the influence of tourists. I felt as though the only tourists here are those coming from cruise ships and stay for short periods of time. This makes Poros the ideal Greek island closest to Athens for a peaceful vacation.

Island Cruise Day Trip from Athens

Stop #3: Aegina

Upon arrival to the island of Aegina (Egina), we had the choice of joining an excursion to the Temple of Aphaia with Key Tours on Aegina. We preferred to roam the island on our own – and eat ice cream and all with pistachios. Aegina is renowned for its pistachios – so much so that they have an actual festival celebrating the nut! We tasted island specialties including pistachio baklava and creamy pistachio ice cream.

aegina pistachio ice cream Melénio Μελένιο

In case you’re wondering, we didn’t gain any weight after our trip to Greece – we walked A LOT.

This popular getaway island is definitely worth a visit if you prefer to cover one island out of the three (it’s only an hour away from Athens). In fact, if you visit in September, you can join the pistachio celebrations.

We bought many edible souvenirs including raw pistachios and fried pistachios covered in sesame and sugar, as well as non-edible products such as olive oil soap.

Key Tours cruise entertainment on the way back to Athens

We unwillingly left Aegina, hopped back onto the boat and sailed back to Piraeus port. On our journey back, we enjoyed Greek dancing and singing while we binged on the pistachios we bought on our final island stop.

Key Tours Day Cruise Island Sunset

Once we arrived at the port, our Key Tours bus was waiting to take us back home – aka our AirBnB flat.

Final Verdict?

If you’re looking for more fun things to do in Athens, a day cruise from Athens is always a good idea if you’re into sun and sea as well as discovering new places when traveling.

It’s important to note that with the Key Tours day cruise from Athens, there’s no guide and no hotel pick-up. There are specific meet-up points that they pick you up from (so you choose the most convenient to you) for an additional 10 euros per person. Otherwise, the meeting point is at the port. Also, drinks aren’t included. I would only suggest to Key Tours to include water for the well-being of their guests.

The fact that transport was taken care of on our day cruise from Athens was huge load off our shoulders. As for the no-guide issue, here’s a good tip to follow: With any tour abroad, try to memorize a few faces of your tour mates, so in case you do get lost, you know who to follow. If you chose an equally lost familiar human, well, good luck. At least you’ll be lost together.

I particularly enjoyed the cruise as it showed me a glimpse of each Greek island. Next time, I can use this experience to perhaps choose one that I would like to explore more (*cough* check out my guide to Aegina ).

More info about the Day Cruise from Athens to Hydra, Poros, and Aegina Islands with Key Tours Greece

Price per person: 99 euros (incl. tax)

So what’s included in the price?

  • Buffet Lunch (excl. drinks)
  • Entertainment

Optional: For bus transport from Athens to Port, add 10 euros

Total time : 8:00am-8:00pm

What to wear? You probably won’t be swimming since there are no beaches right on the ports of the Greek Islands we visited. Definitely wear a swimsuit top and tunic on top for when you get off the boat. You can wear sandals, but if you want to join the excursion, it’s preferable to wear comfortable walking shoes. Also, sunglasses and a hat.

The Perfect Day in Key West for Cruise Guests

Share the post "The Perfect Day in Key West for Cruise Guests"

You’ve booked your cruise vacation and Key West is a port of call. You’re in for an amazing adventure. So what should you do with only one day in Key West while the ship is in port? While Key West is only 8 square miles, that’s still a lot of ground to cover on a quick stopover. To get a true taste of Key West on a cruise vacation, experiencing the water is just as important as experiencing the land.

Get Offshore

If you opt for a shore excursion arranged by your cruise ship, this is the perfect opportunity to go snorkeling or parasailing in Key West . How much time do you want to spend on the water? Parasailing is an hour long trip, while snorkeling is three hours. If you opt to go parasailing, you can easily squeeze in a few activities on land. If you go snorkeling , that might be all the time you have.

Key West Party Spot Sloppy Joes

Cruise Duval Street

Your ship will dock near Mallory Square, which is also at the foot of Duval Street –Key West’s main thoroughfare. If your time is limited, stop at the Conch Fritter stand in Mallory Square and sample one of the island’s favorite treats.

On Duval Street, you’ll find rowdy bars, casual restaurants and a wide variety of shops. You won’t have to walk very far before you reach Sloppy Joe’s, one of Key West’s most famous bars (it also serves lunch). Nearby on Greene Street, you’ll see Captain Tony’s, which was home to the original Sloppy Joe’s. Have a drink in both and decide which spot you like best.

Explore Greene Street & Sample the Food

For a quick lunch of tacos with plenty of people watching, you could stop at Amigo’s Tortilla Bar directly across the street from Captain Tony’s. Farther down Greene Street, you’ll find Kermit’s Key Lime Pie Shoppe. You absolutely must sample his frozen key lime pie on a stick dipped in chocolate. For a twist on the original, he also has a frozen strawberry key lime pie on a stick dipped in white chocolate.

Across the street from Kermit’s is the Conch Republic Seafood Company, known as the Conch Farm by locals. It’s a great open air bar and restaurant with a view of the marina. Order a fish sandwich and a rum punch and while the afternoon away. When you’ve finished your meal, take a stroll along the wooden docks overlooking fishing boats, yachts and charter boats.

Rent Bicycles & Get Off The Beaten Path

The nice thing is that Key West is a walkable island city. If you’d like to explore more off the beaten path destinations, rent a bicycle so you can get around more efficiently. Peddle to Bahama Village for French crepes at La Creperie or a cocktail at Blue Heaven, and make sure you stop at Besame Mucho for some sophisticated souvenir shopping. You can also explore the Key West Cemetery, Fort Zachary Taylor State Park & Beach or just get lost along the back streets amidst pastel conch cottages and blooming bougainvillea.

No matter what slice of Key West life you want to discover on your Key West cruise vacation , take some of this helpful advice while planning your day in Key West. Whatever you don’t get to will just be an excuse to come back and spend more time on the island!

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.

One Day in Key West

By Candyce H. Stapen

Last updated: August 1st, 2024

One day in Key West

  • Find a Cruise

Over the course of one day in Key West, you can experience the joie de vie of the southernmost city in the continental United States.

At only four miles long and about two miles wide, the city packs  a lot into a small space—beaches, historic homes, an iconic lighthouse, fabulous food, lively bars, interesting shops, and intriguing galleries, all wrapped up in an official philosophy of “One Human Family.”

This itinerary circles you through Key West’s highlights. You start early at the always-open attractions in order to maximize the time for museums and facilities with designated hours. But allow time to soak up the happy vibe of this quirky, tropical place, like nowhere else in the United States.

7:30 a.m.: Take Photos at Southernmost Point

Family taking a picture in front of the Southernmost Point

Southernmost Point

Make the most of your day by getting out early. Visit Southernmost Point,  South and Whitehead streets.

As the name suggests, the red, white, and black concrete buoy, with the whimsical “The Conch Republic” insignia, marks the southernmost point in the continental United States, a spot just 90 miles from Cuba. It’s a place to take selfies and to enjoy the expansive sea views.

8 a.m.: Breakfast Near Southernmost Point

Crepes on a plate

Stop for breakfast near Southernmost Point. The French-inspired bistro, the Banana Café, near the foot of Duval Street, specializes in tasty breakfast crepes but also serves bagels, lox, seafood omelets, and granola.

Alternatively, nearby Southernmost Sandy’s Café, on Duval Street, has been serving Key West Cuban and seafood cuisine since 1954. Try omelets or Cuban egg and meat sandwiches to fortify you for the day ahead.

9 a.m.: Meander Through the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservancy

Butterflies eating fruits

Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservancy

The nearby Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservancy places you in a dreamlike garden of tropical plants, beautiful birds, including two flamingos, and hundreds of brightly colored butterflies.

A stroll through the enclosed glass aviary is peaceful and exciting, especially when a butterfly alights on your shoulder or arm.

Increase your chances of the delicate creatures being attracted to you by wearing bright red or yellow. An introductory film describes the butterfly’s life cycle from egg to caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly.

A bonus of a morning arrival may well be the increased chances of watching the marvel of a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis and drying its wings.

9:45 a.m.: Climb the Key West Lighthouse

View of Key West Lighthouse, Florida

Key West Lighthouse

The panoramic view of sea and sand from the top of the Key West Lighthouse is worth the 88-step climb. Constructed in 1848 and decommissioned in 1969, the lighthouse remains an iconic Key West symbol.

Exterior of Keeper’s Quarters Museum

Keeper’s Quarters Museum

In the Keeper’s Quarters Museum, you learn about some of the lighthouse keepers, including the fascinating history of Barbara Mabrity, who took over her husband’s job as keeper after his death in 1832.

Mabrity, the first woman in the U.S. with that job, maintained the 1825 lighthouse and a temporary beacon that was used after an 1846 hurricane destroyed the original lighthouse. She kept up the new 1848 lighthouse until 1864, when she retired aged 82.

10:30 a.m.: Tour the Ernest Hemingway House

One day in Key West - Ernest Hemingway House

Ernest Hemingway House

An icon of American literature, Ernest Hemingway and his wife Pauline lived at the Key West house,  a gift from Pauline’s wealthy uncle, from 1931 to 1939.

During this time, the Hemingways restored the 1851 Spanish colonial-style home and installed the first in-ground pool in Key West.

The pool cost a whopping $20,000 in 1938 dollars. Legend has it that Hemingway jokingly told Pauline to take his last penny, too, as he pressed one into the cement surrounding the pool. That penny is still visible.

Six-toed cat at the Ernest Hemingway House

Six-toed cat

Also visible are some 60 descendants of Snow White, a six-toed cat gifted to Hemingway. About half the kitties have six toes; you’ll see them all around the grounds of the house. Seeing them is one of the most unique things to do in Key West .

You learn about the house, the Hemingways, and their lives in Key West on the 20-30 minute guided tour. At the house, Hemingway completed such well-known works as The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Death in the Afternoon.

11:30 a.m.: Stroll Duval Street and the Surrounding Neighborhood

One day in Key West - Duval Street

Duval Street

From the Hemingway House, walk a block or so to Duval, Key West’s main street, which stretches from the Southernmost Point marker to Mallory Square.

In the evening, Duval is a pub crawl paradise, hopping with bars and partygoers. During the day, though, the street exudes a family-friendly atmosphere, making it one of the best things to do in Key West with kids .

Street view of Duval Street

Meander up and down Duval and the surrounding streets, admire the pastel-painted homes with gingerbread trim, and browse the T-shirt and gift shops.

For an unusual souvenir, consider a lifelike statue of yourself created by 3D Mini Me Key West. After technicians scan you in a 3D photo booth, a process that takes seconds, you choose the size of the sculpture, from three to 14 inches, and the base. The shop promises you will receive the lifelike miniature within four to six weeks.

Rainbow Crosswalk in Key West

Rainbow crosswalk

The official logo of inclusive Key West is “One Happy Family.” At Duval and Petronia streets, the four crosswalks feature the stripes of the rainbow flag, a symbol of LBGTQ unity.

For local art, browse the Gallery on Greene, a showcase for Floridian, Cuban American, and international artists.  At the Key West Art Center, view works by local artists.

12:15 p.m.: Go Local for Lunch

Exterior of Sloppy Joe’s

Sloppy Joe’s

Take in some Key West history by having a drink or a meal at Sloppy Joe’s at the corner of Duval and Greene. From 1933, the establishment operated as a speakeasy on a nearby street, under a different name.

Interior of Sloppy Joe’s

In 1937, the saloon, then called the Blind Pig, moved to its current location. Hemingway, who patronized both places, convinced the owner to rename the bar Sloppy Joe’s after a Havana spot.

Menu items include conch fritters, pizza, Cuban sandwiches, and the original Sloppy Joe, a mega-sandwich of ground beef with sauce.

At the Conch Republic Seafood Company,  try the cracked conch (lightly breaded and fried), crab cakes, or mahi mahi. The restaurant plates burgers, chicken sandwiches, and other items for non-seafood lovers.

1:15 p.m.: Swim and Snorkel  at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

Beach in Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

Glistening turquoise water surrounds you in Key West. Take advantage of the setting by relaxing at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park’s beach, one of the best beaches in Key West .

Combine beach fun with history at the facility on the island’s southwestern coast, just two miles from downtown.

Rental chairs and umbrellas are available, making beach relaxing easy. Since the hard-packed sand is rocky in places, be sure to wear beach shoes. The water is relatively calm and refreshing.

Snorkelers may spot lobster, parrotfish, and other sea creatures near the jetties. The beach area has lockers, showers, and bathrooms.

For lunch, if you haven’t already had some, the park’s restaurant serves burgers, Cuban sandwiches, and other fare.

Historic forts in Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

Before departing the state park, explore the historic fort. Situated where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico, the stone fort, completed in 1866 and controlled by Union forces, guarded the area against Confederate forces.

Known for a large collection of Civil War weapons and equipment, the fort’s row of cannons impresses. See them on a guided tour or explore on your own.

3 p.m.: Discover the Booty of Spanish Galleons at the Mel Fisher Museum

Exterior of Mel Fisher Museum

Gold coins, gold and silver jewelry, emeralds, and a gold chalice embedded with stones that supposedly neutralize poison are some dazzling exhibits at the Mel Fisher Museum.

Fisher, a persistent and renowned wreck diver, salvaged items from the Nuestra Senora de Atocha and the Santa Margarita vessels, both of which sunk off the Florida Keys in 1622.

After a 16-year search, Fisher found the Spanish galleons in 1985, salvaging more than $400 million in treasure.

Learn about Fisher’s quest, the scientific tools used to identify the sunken vessels, and piracy and the slave trade.

4 p.m.: Take a Key Lime Pie Break

Exterior of Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe

Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe

Key lime pie is a famous dessert that Key West is known for . The iconic treat, the official state pie of Florida, uses Key limes, a variety that’s juicier and sweeter than Persian limes.

Locals consider the dessert to have been invented in Key West, although some food historians dispute that. Never mind; the custard and graham cracker crust pie is delicious.

People eating at Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe

Many places serve delectable versions of this treat. Consider ordering slices from Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe, Key Lime Pie Company, or the Key Lime Pie Bakery

Key Lime Pie Company. Some places even feature slices dipped in chocolate.  Near Mallory Square, El Meson de Pepe, a Cuban restaurant, serves a delicious version called torta de limon, plus fragrant Cuban coffee.

4:30 p.m.: Visit Mallory Square

Waterfront view of Mallory Square

Mallory Square

Key West is the kind of place where there’s a party at Mallory Square every night. Two hours before the sun sets, musicians and jugglers start arriving, as do food vendors and local artists selling canvasses and trinkets.

Locals and visitors gather to watch the sky turn pink and red as the sun dips below the horizon on the Gulf of Mexico. Even if you don’t stay until sunset, you can explore nearby shops, enjoy the panoramic water views, and soak up the joyful vibe as a finale to your one day in Key West.

Key West Day Trip Guide: Activities to Do, Places to See, and Foods to Devour!

During my travels around Florida, I found myself spending most of my time in Key West, a quirky little island with a vibrant life that seems to be worlds apart from the rest of the state. Exploring the city and its local cuisine and watching the sunset across the turquoise waters were the highlights of my trip.

That said, there were many other things that I indulged in and enjoyed a lot. Come to think of it, I can proudly say that there isn’t a spot on this quaint little island that I haven’t missed. This makes me the right person to create the perfect itinerary for a day trip.

Whether you’re heading to this part of Florida with friends and family or as part of a cruise ship stop, make sure to read this guide to have the best time in Key West!

Make Sure to Plan Your Day Trip to Key West in Spring or Fall!

While you can plan your day trip to Key West any time of the year and have a blast, there are a few things to keep in mind, including the crowds and weather.

When I visited this gorgeous little island city in the Florida Keys, spring was nearing its end. It was cool and breezy during this time, with fewer tourists roaming around.

However, my friend was not so lucky. He went on a solo adventure to explore Key West in the summer, and his experience was slightly different than mine.

Although drinking cocktails on Smathers Beach or enjoying the sunset celebration on the beautiful island was all he talked about, he did mention that the toasty weather and high humidity affected his travels.

You can also plan your day trip to Key West in winter. While the weather is pleasant, the swarming crowds of tourists might make your view of the crystal clear waters of the Florida Keys less picturesque. I recommend visiting in the summer or fall to avoid foot traffic.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that hurricane season begins in June and ends in November. Although I was lucky to have just missed the natural disaster during my travels, I saw its impact on the little island city, leaving many properties in shambles.

That said, hurricanes don’t always pass through the Florida Keys every year, so make sure to plan accordingly.  I also made a more in depth post about the best time to visit all Florida Keys .

What to Do in Key West for a Day: One-day Itinerary for the Best Experience

There are many things to do in Key West. From indulging in the infamous Key Lime pie on a stick to enjoying local culinary delights at some of the best restaurants in town, here’s how you should spend your day, afternoon, and evening in this vibrant island city:

Have a Relaxing Breakfast at Blue Heaven

Start your day munching on Floridian-Caribbean cuisine. If you want to properly explore Key West, you need to dive into what the locals eat. Blue Heaven is one of the best places to grab a quick bite or indulge in a full-course meal before heading into town.

Most people come here for the beautiful courtyard, which is perfect for taking pictures for your Instagram, but they stay for the food. Blue Heaven is one of my top recommendations for many reasons, including the fact that they offer breakfast until 2:00 PM. If you’re late, you don’t need to worry, as the staff will serve you warm meals to fill your belly.

Blue Heaven has a limited menu with very few items, so you’ll definitely be getting high-quality, freshly prepared food. I started my breakfast by ordering the “Richard’s Very Good Pancakes,” followed by its most popular dessert, the Key Lime pie. You can also try the Lobster Benedict, as I heard good things about it from the people sitting at the table next to me.

When the food arrived, I was taken aback. The pancakes were the largest I’ve ever seen in my life, and each spoonful contained bananas, pineapple, pecans, and blueberries. The bar was set high after I took the first bite.

Once I had completely devoured the pancakes, I quickly dug into the famous Key Lime pie that has the whole town talking. It was refreshing with the right amount of sweetness.

I’ll cherish my time spent at Blue Heaven. Not only was the food lip-smacking good but I was also greeted by the infamous Key West chickens roaming around the patio of this fine establishment. A local band was playing live music, which created a relaxing and inviting atmosphere.

Snorkel at the Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

Zachary Taylor State Park Key West

After you’ve had your fill, head over to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. While there are many beaches in Key West, I highly recommend Fort Zach (that’s what the residents call it), as it’s the locals’ favorite spot and the only natural white sand beach on the island. The crowds are smaller here, and you can snorkel a few miles offshore if you’re feeling a bit adventurous.

Don’t have the gear? Don’t worry; you’ll find a few rental shops on Fort Zachary Taylor Beach that’ll equip you with the right equipment, whether you’re planning to sunbathe or snorkel. You can even wander around the exciting trails in the area or take a self-guided tour of a Civil War Era Fort. There’s a lot to do in this part of the town.

Before moving forward, I want to clear up a misconception that many travelers have about Key West. Most of the pristine white sandy beaches, including Smathers Beach and Higgs Beach, that draw tourists from all over America are largely manmade. Nevertheless, they are beautiful and worth a visit.

Explore the Old Town Area of Key West

While I’m always up for a good adventure, I found myself roaming around the old town area often. Something about this place attracts your attention and lures you in. The old-fashioned wooden homes surrounded by newly renovated bars, churches, and museums create a vibe like no other.

In this part of town, you’ll find a lot of things to do. Here are some of my recommendations:

  • Rum Distillery Tour
  • The Conch Tour Train
  • Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory
  • Florida Keys Eco-discovery Center

Lunch at Cuban Coffee Queen

Walking the trails, snorkeling, or simply exploring this side of Key West would’ve built up a serious appetite, and that’s perfect, as your next stop should be Cuban Coffee Queen.

There are many outlets around town, but my favorite is the one on Margaret Street near the Key West Historic Seaport. This is the original Cuban Coffee Queen spot from where it all began, so you can expect that it serves some of the best Cuban sandwiches and drinks.

Heading over to this fine establishment made me hungry, so I couldn’t help but quickly give my order to the friendly staff. After a quick glance at the menu, I chose the Havana Rice and Beans and a Café Con Leche to wash it all down. The food was exquisite, and it will give you enough energy for whatever you have planned next.

There are so many worthy eateries to dine at that it makes it incredibly difficult to explore the local cuisine in Key West in a day. If you’re here for longer, I highly recommend trying Garbo’s Grill, a husband-and-wife-run stand/trailer that’s been featured in many food magazines. The Korean beef short rib tacos and the Umami burger smothered in chipotle Gouda served at this establishment are to die for!

Head Over to the Iconic Key West Mural

Fortunately, you don’t have to do much walking for this activity. The iconic “Greetings from Key West” mural is right next to Cuban Coffee Queen and is the perfect spot to start exploring this stunning little island.

After you’ve taken a picture or two for your social media profiles, it’s time to head over to the Key West Historic Seaport.

Explore the Key West Historic Seaport

Nearby the iconic Key West mural is the old seaport with grand views. It’s an excellent place for a quiet, relaxing stroll, and what’s even more exciting is that you’ll be greeted by sailboats and yachts anchored at the harbor.

Here, you can take pictures, enjoy hearing the waves gently crash on the shores, or shop at the many little trinket stores to buy souvenirs for your loved ones.

I understand that you’re here to learn more about my Key West adventures and discover a few secret places or hidden gems. Luckily for you, I never let my readers down.

Since you’re already at the Key West Historic Seaport, I highly recommend searching for Lazy Way Lane. It’s a cute pedestrian-only road filled with colorful shops, palm trees, and a vibe that you won’t find anywhere in the United States. Strolling on this stretch of land feels like you’re walking in a Hollywood movie.

Indulge in Kermit’s Key Lime Pie

Whether you’re navigating Key West in a day or looking to spend some time there, make sure to try the internet-famous Key Lime pie from Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe. It’s a delicious, decadent pie dipped in chocolate and served on a stick; yes, you heard that right!

There are many outlets of Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe across town, but I recommend heading over to the Elizabeth Street location, as it’s near the Key West Historic Seaport. The super cute yellow and green building isn’t hard to miss.

Shop on Duval Street

Duval Street

It must be late in the afternoon by now, and the temperatures should have started to cool down, which makes it the perfect time to visit Duval Street. It’s filled with bars, restaurants, cafes, galleries, and tourist shops.

While you’ll find streets like this all across the country, what makes Duval Street unique is the architecture and colorful buildings, which give the place a unique vibe.

Here, you’ll find the fanciest Walgreens nestled in the vibrant, vintage Strand Theater. Remember to take pictures at the nearby rainbow crosswalk intersection.

When the sun sets, Duval Street comes to life. Live music creates a stunning atmosphere, and the crowded sidewalks are a sight to see.

If drinking is your thing, you may want to consider a pub crawl, trying unique alcoholic cocktails made by some of the best bartenders in Key West. Make sure to include Sloppy Joe’s during your bar adventures.

Take One Last Look at the Conch Republic

Although there are many things to do in Key West in a day, it’s important to prioritize certain experiences that you can cherish for the rest of your life. One of them is the Southernmost Point, a landmark on this small island city that’s 90 miles from Cuba.

Here, you’re much closer to a foreign country than you are to Miami. Don’t forget to whip out your camera for some stunning photos.

You can also visit the Mile Marker, another southernmost point in the United States that’s excellent for fun photography. It’s at the end of Highway US 1 and a great spot if you want to stand at the far end of the Florida Keys.

Enjoy the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square

Your day in Key West is about to come to an end. If you have time to stick around for the sunset celebration, Mallory Square is my favorite spot to be.

Two hours before the sun sets, this place comes alive with people, music, stunt performers, and vendors. It happens every night and provides a glimpse into how locals celebrate their evenings.

Since booze and parties may not be up everyone’s alley, you may want to hop aboard a small sailboat to enjoy the sunset with your friends or family. It’s a quiet and fun experience that I highly recommend. Plus, there are many excursion activities that you can enjoy.

Dine at Amigos Tortilla Bar

Having dinner at Amigos Tortilla Bar is the best way to end your Key West day trip on a good note. During my time here, I frequently visited this restaurant for meals, as it serves scrumptious food and offers the option to sit outside to enjoy the sights that unfold on Duval Street.

After the sunset celebration at Mallory Square, head over to Amigos Tortilla Bar for a yummy Mexican dinner in the heart of Key West. From tacos to burritos, veggies and meat bowls, and fish, there are many options to choose from. Regardless of what you order, the food is prepared fresh and worth the wait.

Final Thoughts on Spending One Day in Key West

A day in Key West is not enough to explore this quirky city. It has many public beaches, including Higgs Beach and Smathers Beach, each offering a distinct feel, making them worth a visit. Also, there are numerous restaurants to explore for tasty local eats, including the conch fritters at the Conch Republic Seafood Company.

However, if you’re looking to spend less than 24 hours on this island, this guide should provide you with a list of activities to make the most of your time at Key West!

Celebrity's Journey to Moscow excursion

I will be in St. Petersburg in June on a Celebrity ship. Having been there previously, we would like to do the Journey to Moscow excursion. Celebrity lists it in the shore excursion brochure for my sail date, but it has not been available for booking on their website.

I have called Celebrity twice and both times was told that even though it is listed in the shore excursion brochure, it probably isn't being offered since it is not listed for pre-booking on the website. I have emailed Celebrity twice and received a different response. They responded that they were still working with the tour provider on the details and is not yet available for pre-booking.

Anyone have any experience with this that could offer some advice? It's frustrating that cruise line agents can be so misinformed and inconsistent in what they tell us.

Having done this one-day trip to Moscow and back on another cruise while in St. Petersburg, I might be able to share some insight. First, from dealing with some Celebrity folks about Europe options, certain of them are limited in their personal experiences and knowledge about this part of the world. Shouldn't be this way, but it is. They know more on the familiar Carib options as that is what is both closer and for which they get more of their calls/question. If they haven't done it, nor is is clear on their computer screen, they can't be of much help.

Second, that excursion to Moscow has been "evolving" during the past few years as they have switched from doing it by air flights to connection by high-speed rail. On trips like this one that is more costly and highly specialized, you will probably need to "press and push" to reach someone who is more likely to know this somewhat of a "needle in the haystack".

It's sad that you've gotten the "run-around", but sometimes the staff is not as informed and experienced as you would like, expect and need.

Do you need any background info for what you would see and do in Moscow , how it works, etc.???

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

What you said makes perfect sense. Thanks.

I also looked into doing this tour privately, but one tour provider informed me there were no available trains or planes to fit my ship's time in port. We will be there on a weekend so its possible that transportation does not run as frequent. I just wish Celebrity could get their act together and tell me definitively whether they will be offering the Moscow excursion.

If your cruise puts you into St. Petersburg on a weekend, that could be another complicating factor. Openings at certain places, rail schedules, etc., could be different for some days of the week. It is possible to do the Moscow trip by some private tour companies, but if there are any weather and/or scheduling complications, that could make things more difficult. Doing it through the cruise ship, makes it "their" problem, not yours!!

Doing the one-day trip to Moscow is very interesting and special. Lots of cruise lines do it now and have the practice down to a "science". BUT, that weekend timing could be delaying their finalization some on schedules.

I was able to book this for a June cruise in the past few days. If you look carefully in the fine print for the excursion, I believe it is because you have to begin the online check-in process since they need your passport/ID information before you can book this excursion. Try to do as much of the online check-in as you can, and I think it should appear for purchase.

It would be nice to know what the actual schedule for the Moscow excursion is. I don't believe it is actually 18.5 hours, but that is just to make sure that you can't book anything else on that day.

I was finally able to book the tour online. They just made it available for online booking the other day. I sure hope they reach the minimum number of guests so it isn't cancelled.

Not sure why it leaves at 9:30. If it indeed is an 18.5 hour tour, we won't get back until 4 am.

It looks like Celebrity edited the description to say that, for those excursions on a weekend, the actual tour will be shortened by about 2 hours due to less traffic on a weekend.

Terry (or anyone who has been on the Journey to Moscow excursion before):

Can you give me a little detail on the itinerary? The tour description says that we will have a walking tour of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as visits to the Armoury and one of the Kremlin cathedrals. Was wondering what other Moscow sights we will get to see. Or will the rest be in the form of a panoramic bus tour? Any opportunity for souvenir shopping?

Thanks for any insights you can offer.

This was just cancelled for my cruise :( Didn't meet the minimum number of people interested in going.

There might be some options through private tour companies. We used Anastasia for our part in St. Petersburg, but she is doing these Moscow arrangements for friends, two couples, from here in Central Ohio, in late June. I would contact a couple of key, experiences firms such as Anastasia, see what she and others can offer to make this one-day train trip over and back.

Which sailing are you on that the Moscow excursion was cancelled? I booked it for my Eclipse cruise June 23 sailing and haven't heard anything

You have probably figured out now that not only excursions, but many other things aboard ship are misleading, if not downright fraudulent. The ship crew, staff and clerks are all going to do pretty much what they want to, but not only on the Royal Caribbean's Celebrity brand, but almost all cruise ships - the captain can almost get away with murder. Aren't you glad you don't have to work on one of these vessels? Also make sure you don't get involved in any type of dispute, as even some crime gets swept under the ship - well, not all, like the Costa that crashed & tipped over, but not sure even then much will happen, as all passengers signed all their rights away before they got on board.

Hope you have enjoyed your cruise by now and maybe look back here on the board. About the only way to get any knowledge about the ships, excursions, etc. is through sites like this.

As we are sailing a year from now on Celebrity Constellation - Aug 12, we were wondering too about shows aboard, excursions (both ship and private), if you ever got to Moscow, etc. Please write to us at:

We will be in St. Petersburg in July and want to take Celebrity's tour to Moscow. Please let us know if you liked it or not and how long it was. This is going to be our second time in St. Petersburg but will like to take a private tour on day #2. Did you do something the day after your Moscow tour? We are traveling with our teenagers and worry about them being too tired

I thought I would bump this up. We will be on the Brilliance this time next year and are very interested in doing this our. Are there still people out there that have done it? I would love to hear what you thought of the tour, the travel part and what you were able to see while in Moscow. Was it worth the price?

I would love to hear what you thought of the tour' date=' the travel part and what you were able to see while in Moscow. Was it worth the price?[/quote'] We just did this tour and really liked it, but this was our second time in St. Petersburg. If this is your first time there I don't know if it's the best choice. You spend most of the day in airports and buses. Our meeting time at the ship was 6:45 AM, followed by a 45 min. long drive to the airport. Then we had to wait for a 10:00 AM one hour flight to Moscow. As you can see we arrived after 11:00 AM followed by another 30 minutes ride to the city. We were taken to the Red Square, to take a subway ride, followed by a coffee and tea break, then to the Kremlin armory museum (where we spend most of our time), also visited the Cathedral of the Annunciation, and back to the Red Square. Were only given half hour for shopping, followed by a really long dinner at a local restaurant. Our flight back to St. Petersburg departed half hour late, arriving at 11:30 PM. It took a while for the bus to pick us up, another 45 min. drive to the port and we were at our rooms by 1:00 AM. This means that if you want to see St. Petersburg the next day, you are going to be really tired. BTW, I'm not complaining, this tour was so popular on our cruise that they had two groups for the first time. Most of my friends were on that group and they had the worst time. Their flight left earlier than ours and although they were taken to more places than us, they ended up on a later flight and arrived in St. Petersburg after 12:30 AM. The problem was that the tour company knew that they were not going to make it on time to the bridges that connect the city to the area where the ship docks. The elevated bridges go up at 1:30 AM in the morning and are taken back after 5:00 AM. Can you believe that our tour guide made fun of the fact that the other bus was not going to make it on time? It was really frustrating for them to watch the bridges go up in front of their eyes. They finally found online a bridge that goes down for periods of 15 min. and were able to go back to the ship after 3:00 AM. Some of them couldn't make it to their tours the next day. Remember, this is Russia, if you don't make it to your tour the next day, you won't be able to leave the ship. My friends tried to take a taxi and catch up with us, but their visa stated a 9:00AM pick up time and had to stay on the ship. We liked our tour, but it is up to you to decide if it's worth it. The time that you actually spend in Moscow is really limited. If by any chance you are given a late flight on your way back, start screaming and demand an earlier flight. The tour company hired by Celebrity is going to buy the cheapest flights to make more money. Just my two cents. I tried to research this tour before our cruise and didn't find too much information. Hope this helps. BTW, I was concern about the planes used for the flights, if you are too, don't be. The flight was great and were even given a sandwich with juice or water. I do have to say that we felt that we were on a PanAm 1970's flight. The attendants were all really young, skinny and beautiful, wore heavy make up and complicated hair styles. I was also not impressed by either St. Petersburg or Moscow's airports. No restrooms close to the gates, two flights leaving at the same time through the same gate, just a mess!! Before our tour I couldn't understand how Edward Snowden could hide for such a long time on an airport, after visiting Moscow's international airport it just made sense. Hope you enjoy your Baltic cruise.

The_Big_M

Thanks for the details. I was quite curious about it. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like you got to see so much there. Fortunately as you say it was your second time in SPB, so you can compare and see the differences between the cities. They are very different.

On our Celebrity cruise, it was sold out, but I didn't come across anyone who took the tour to find out their experiences.

drarill, I had to laugh at the comment about how Snowden was able to hide in the airport ... I had wondered the same thing, but now we know!! LOL

Thank you for posting your experience. You have given me a lot to think about. It just seemed like a good idea, now I need to think really hard about it. I would hate to have our second day messed up in SPB.

We did Celebrity's Journey to Moscow excursion in July 2012. We had been to St. Petersburg before so decided to do something different. Interestingly, this excursion had been cancelled on some of the previous cruises that summer as a result of not enough people signed up. There were about 20 people on our excursion.

In a nutshell, I recommend the excursion and would do it again, but there are some caveats:

1. I would probably not go to Moscow if this was my first time visiting St. Petersburg. SP is full of wonderful sites so I would spend my two port days there seeing all the city sites, including the Hermitage, as well as visiting one of the palaces outside the city.

2. If you go to Moscow and plan on taking a tour in SP the next day, be aware (as someone else posted) that the tour returns to the ship very late and you might have difficulty getting up early enough the next morning for your SP tour. Our flight didn't land back in SP until after midnight and we were unable to cross the bridges before they rose. We didn't return back to the ship until after 2am, but because we anticipated that this might happen, we booked an afternoon private car in SP. We actually ended up enjoying being out late in SP with the bridges up as our bus and guide drove us around the city late at night and it was a surreal experience, especially during the white nights of summer.

3. We thought the time in Moscow could have been better organized, allowing us more time to see Red Square and the Kremlin buildings, but we were prevented from doing so due to horrendous traffic around Moscow, a very long-winded local tour guide, and too much time spent stopping for a coffee break (which was entirely unnecessary IMO). We also had almost no time to shop and the time spent in Red Square was much too short. Again, I mostly blamed this on our guide who talked too much rather than allowing us free time to wander around. I ditched the guide and our group before we were actually dismissed for free time so that I could wander around Red Square and make a few purchases from a street artist (local art and crafts on the street are of high quality and inexpensive IMO).

4. The dinner, while served in a beautiful, elegant setting, was mediocre at best. Lots of alcohol, but I've had better beef stroganoff in a school cafeteria.

Having provided you with these caveats, I still would take the tour again. It was a fascinating and magical experience. From the very interesting airport and airplane experience, to having the opportunity to visit the Kremlin sites and Red Square, it was worth it for us. It was a whirlwind of a tour, lasting about 18 hours from the time we left the ship until we returned.

I hope this helps others make a decision about this tour.

I was finally able to book the tour online. They just made it available for online booking the other day. I sure hope they reach the minimum number of guests so it isn't cancelled.   Not sure why it leaves at 9:30. If it indeed is an 18.5 hour tour, we won't get back until 4 am.

We are on May 21, 2017 Eclipse and want to do the same tour.

There are several trains per day even on weekends and holidays. If it is the weekend I would say you are better off flying as traffic will be a little better than on a weekday especially in the morning. There are probably several flights an hour. The train is modern and comfortable but not especially scenic.

Since you need a visa anyway you could also consider arranging a Moscow tour guide to meet you at the airport and arrange your own transport to Moscow. An airport taxi should be easy to arrange in St Petersburg or use Uber. Aeroflot tickets are easy to buy online.
