How much does it cost.

The price of the tour is calculated based on how many people are on the tour. Book for 3 people and get the best rate per person!

I am booking a flight for 2 labelled, “Private Flight”, but there is a box asking “Would you like to book the whole aircraft?” for a fee. Why?

The private option charges 1/2 a standard seat price in addition to the initial two seats to keep the third seat empty and guarantee a private flight. Without this option, there is a chance the third seat will be filled with a single occupant from another party. We provide this option to make the flight less expensive for a party of two that wishes for a cheaper flight and do not mind the extra company.

I’m traveling alone. Your website says $XXX per person, can I pay you that and go by myself?

This is possible, but not guaranteed. Please call us to book for 1 person – we will check the schedule and see if we have a tour with an open seat. We will combine you with two other travelers who chose not to pay extra for the PRIVATE option.

What do I wear on helicopter ride?

Make sure you have sunglasses or regular glasses to protect your eyes from the wind! Keep long hair pulled back. We also recommend you to wear a light jacket if you get cold easily.

What can I expect on my tour?

You can expect to see the most beautiful sights on Oahu, guided by a knowledgeable and courteous pilot. It will be an unforgettable experience! Our tours accommodate 1-3 passengers and we offer doors on or doors off options.

Is flying with the doors off safe?

Yes. The helicopter model we operate is specifically approved by FAA for any door on/door off configuration. You will also required to wear a seat belt all the time. Our staff will instruct you about in-flight safety measures before your flight. Your safety is our first priority!

What will I see on the tour?

Each tour offers a different set of a locations that you will see. For example, 18 min tour is centered around Waikiki and Urban Honolulu, but 60 min flight will take you around the whole island where you will see mountains, waterfalls, and historic Pearl Harbor!

Are helicopter tours safe?

Which hawaiian island is best for helicopter tours.

While all of the islands offer spectacular sights from the air, Kauai has the most dramatic helicopter views . Because so much of the island is inaccessible by car, you’ll get to see close up some beautiful spots you’d have difficulty seeing otherwise, like parts of Waimea Canyon, the Napali Coast, and Wai’ale’ale Crater. 

But if you can’t make it to Kauai, all of the islands offer something a little different in terms of tours, which we cover in our island-by-island review of the best helicopter tours. 

How Much Does a Helicopter Tour Cost in Hawaii?

A helicopter tour starts at $245 for a 45-minute tour. Most tours average $400. This is easily the most expensive tour option in Hawai’i. Unlike a luau, I’ve been hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t enjoy the experience for the price point.

On some tours, you can pay extra ($100+) for a front-row seat or be relegated to the back or middle where they typically pack in passengers four to a seat.

Is a Hawaii Helicopter Tour Worth It?

While this is an expensive activity, it’s one people enthusiastically recommend.

• Poor visibility from their seat (usually back or middle seats)
• Canceled flights due to weather
• Canceled flights due to the minimum seating threshold not being met

• Safety records include no crashes or injuries: we know past performance can’t predict future performance, but some tour operators that we don’t recommend have safety records we don’t feel comfortable with. Do your research to make sure you feel comfortable with the safety track record of the helicopter tour you are booking.

Your tour begins at Honolulu International Airport’s south ramp, where you’ll board your helicopter.

Q: Which is the best seat on a helicopter?

The front row seats are typically the most desirable because passengers can see out without having to peer over a fellow passenger. The front seats also offer more legroom than the back seats.

Q: What are the best times to take a helicopter tour?

Mornings and evenings work well because the sun isn’t directly overhead and won’t interfere with your pictures. Visibility is sometimes better in the morning than it is in the afternoon.

Q: What should I wear for a Hawaii helicopter ride?

Dress comfortably, like you would for any outdoor activity in Hawaii. However, if you choose a doors-off tour, your flight will be windy and cold so jackets and/or sweatshirts are required and long pants are recommended. Closed toed shoes are also required for doors-off tours. Hats are often not allowed on board your flight. Lastly, for anyone with long hair – a hair tie is recommended.

The pilot and hubby talked me into doors off- how great it was, not scary at all, just the wind that made hanging on to everything and trying to take photos a little difficult. Disappointed that hubby got to see all the beach and sea and I got to see all the mountains and forest as that was the direction we were going- an idea would have been to turn at times though maybe this couldn’t be done. The ground crew were exceptional! Nothing was too big an issue for them. I would love to do it again and fly over Diamond Head this time!

First time in a helicopter and we went doors off, Sarah was our pilot, she was awesome and gave us a great tour. It was a little hard to hear and communicate, but once we got going we got the hang of it and it was nice to communicate with our pilot and ask dumb tourist questions. It was a very smooth flight for the most part, a few up and downs due to the winds, my wife is prone to motion sickness and she just took a Dramamine to help settle herself. Some things to know, you can tip your pilot after your flight once you get back in the office if you feel the need to, I did, if you have longer hair it will get tangled up pretty good and you have to leave your wallet in the office (I didn’t like this as it wasn’t locked). You can bring your cell phone, they provide a neck strap but my phone was very difficult to take pictures through the plastic, but my son had no problem so it was probably something I wasn’t doing right. I would highly recommend this once in a life time experience, as we made life long family memories.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip and the professionalism of Rainbow Helicopters. Easy parking, easy directions/signage, easy check in. They make you put your phones in plastic carriers for safety but this did cause my phone to overheat. The headphones/mouthpieces weren’t cleaned in between passengers which would have been appreciated (covid or not) because you have the place the mouthpiece so close to your mouth. It can get very warm if you’re sitting up front (with the doors on). We had one door off which helped with air flow and I was still cooking in the front. We did this tour at the end of our trip which I recommend since you recognize landmarks and places you’ve been/visited; it gives you a stronger connection to the sites. I’d recommend the company and the one hour tour.

We booked the Royal for a full island ride and it was well worth it. The pilot, Cat, was outstanding. She concentrated on safety and procedures while ensuring we had a great view. She was very professional. The only reason I did a 4 instead of 5 is because of the young ones attending to videos. There was more attention to their personal lives than their customers. Ours was ruined and we did not purchase even at a discount. Why purchase it if no guarantee that we would be in it. We would probably fly with them again.

I am afraid of heights, but I was so in awe of the beauty of Hawaii that I didn’t even think about how high up we were and the fact that there were no doors on our helicopter! Our tour guide, Cat, was great and very friendly. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone!

Fantastic trip! Pilots were skilled aviators and provided great information about the island. Aircraft and equipment were comfortable. I would definitely fly with them again. My only negative comment is that we were supposed to be in one large helicopter, but they rescheduled us to 2 small helicopters (which was fine), and then wanted to charge us extra for a video of the second trip, so we ended up with only one video.

I’m a pilot and I know she had to deal with some winds, but she knows her route very well and we had a very smooth ride. The route was well planned and we got to see everything. Not a rating on the tour, but if you have a larger group and going up with the larger helicopter you might not get to see everything from the center seats. This was our second helicopter tour while in Hawaii, so it was hard to not compare the two. The check-in process, option of doors off, and the views were outstanding. We had a few suggestions: the pilot to talk more during the tour as we were wanting to know more details and the history about the island, spending just a little more time at the big scenic areas that were advertised (ie waterfall) especially since we were unable to view the entire tour due to cloud coverage. Overall, the tour was good and would still recommend.

This was one of the most thrilling things I have ever done. We saw the world from the perspective of a bird. Totally different than the world in an airplane with small windows to the outside. We rode with no doors and felt 100% safe – slightly windblown, but that’s to be expected. And you could see the views without the glare of the glass. I would absolutely recommend it without the doors on. The sound dampening headphones were great – we could still hear the beating of the rotors, but it was so muted you could barely tell. The ride was totally worth the cost. The crew was professional and very helpful. They even took a video of our experience – what we saw and then our reactions. Would absolutely do this again!

The pilot and the flight itself was great. He was professional, fun, knowledgeable and entertaining. He made the tour a blast!! My husband and I absolutely loved seeing the island from a different perspective.

My review isn’t to be negative about the flight, but to be transparent about what to expect.

After booking the doors off flight online and being told one of us would be in the front and the other would be in the back, we checked in to find out that we were on a bigger helicopter with another group. We walked into a debriefing room where we put on safety vest packages around our waist, received goggles for those who were on the outer seats, and leave the items not allowed on the flight.

We arrived at 2:00 like recommend, with about 10 minutes of brief, checking in. After an hour wait, 2:58 we left on a golf cart to meet the helicopter. It was a very tight squeeze in the back. My arms were borderline pinned to my side with a smaller indivual (seat 4) to my left and my husband (seat 6), who is a fairly big guy on my right. However when the second customer decided to move his son last minute to the front, the cushion for seat 4 in the back was taken out so that it wouldn’t fly away in the air. Which left me, in seat 5 (Second in from the right) with way more room thankfully, but then half my butt on the cushion and the other half without a cushion, the entire flight. This, as well as the seat location, made it very challenging to photograph anything. However the pilot made sure to turn in a way that gave me a chance to see the view.

Having the doors off made it exciting, however the customer to my left, his back cushion was pulling up from the wind so it pulled my left side up as well. This was very uncomfortable and left me sore the following morning. However I didn’t really mind it since our pilot was communicating back and forth about the island, and answering our questions.

I would highly recommend a private flight, especially for broader men, and consider doors closed to have all the cushions on the helicopter. The windows were clean and could be photographed through, however I am not sure about having the same visibility as doors off.

Great flight all around and great customer service. Our flight started with a greeting by the Crew at the reception desk and a quick and simple safety video. Then a quick ride out to the aircraft where our pilot Riley already had the aircraft running and waiting for us to load. The flight was awesome to say the least. Being an old Army Aviation mechanic and door gunner from Afghanistan it brought back some great memories to fly with doors open and feel the wind filling the aircraft! Riley kept us at a nice smooth level flight climbing to about 2500ft for one portion as we went around the whole island. He called out the sites and even circled around so people on the outside got a first hand view of the major sites. That was the fun part as the aircraft banked about 30 degrees in a very controlled 360 degree turn. Any tighter than that and my fiancé woulda crushed my hand!!! Everyone gets a headset with mic and they worked fine but only me and my fiancé talked during the flight. This was her first helicopter flight so she was a bit nervous but the jitters wore off toward the end when she talked to the pilot. Riley was very confident, managing the aircraft, talking to other aircraft and us as well. He knows his stuff for sure. Overall it was a great time and worth every penny. I’d definitely do it again and highly recommend their service. Thanks for making the whole experience a great time.

The helicopter tour was our gift to her since Make A Wish doesn’t allow helicopter rides for insurance reasons. She is a Stage IV Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor. She was diagnosed late February 2021 and went through 6 cycles of chemotherapy. She completed her treatment in July of 2021. She wants to go to college and become a Marine Biologist so what better way to to see the most spectacular ocean views but in Hawaii. After searching numerous helicopter companies, this was one of the highly rated companies that could accommodate a group of four. The only frustrating aspect I dealt with was after using the companies online booking. As I completed all of the information and paid for the booking. Then I received a text that the timeslot that I just paid for was not available. After some back and forth texting and phone calls, they were able to accommodate us one hour earlier than desired. This was okay but caused some rushing around on our part to ensure that we got to the facility in enough time. Once there, all of the staff was pleasant and helpful. Our pilot, Joey, is the only native Hawaiian pilot. I thought that Joey did a fantastic job flying us around and provided great information about the island and all of the landmarks. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience. As someone who does not typically splurge on purchases, I am glad that I chose the 60-minute flight. I believe it was well worth it.

We had a great time. The weather was perfect and the flight was smooth. The only constructive criticism is to have more narration from the pilot on history and more details of key sites throughout the flight. The pilot did point out some locations but a little more insight and details would be have been helpful. There was lots to take in from a passenger’s perspective, and the helicopter had a time schedule so going slower or hovering to create time to ask questions was not realistic. Overall, a great time and would recommend this trip to anyone who has not seen Oahu from the air.

We spent 8 hours in a van “touring” the island on Wednesday. We spent an hour in the air on Thursday with Rainbow helicopters. The one hour in the air provided better views, context and content than any of Wednesday. I strongly recommend doing the one hour flight. If you can do “doors off,” it provides so much more visibility at the risk of tangled hair (wear a hoodie, put the hood on!). Rainbow was very accommodating and did everything they could to make our trip safe and enjoyable. Our pilot Kerry was awesome, making sure we were comfortable, knew what we were looking at and also made sure I got the opportunity to get some priceless pictures. We were a big concerned when we saw the dark clouds, but the staff assured us that with the bit of wind we were having it would not deter from our flight our views. Boy were they right! Starting with our wonderful pilot Harley explaining all we were going over and near. To my many questions. He was able to circle around a couple of areas so that I could get better pictures of the waterfalls and the AZ Memorial. If you want to see the island and not have to rent a car or take a ground tour this is the way to go and do it with the doors off the views are that much more.

A fantastic trip! I recommend the door off if you want to take photos. I was warned it would be a bit windy and cold but with the right clothes it was very comfortable.

It was a thrill flying over the island to get a perspective of all the different landmarks and cities. We saw lots of items of interest including Sacred Falls (only able to be seen from the air), the valley where lots of films/TV series were shot, Pearl Harbour and the North Shore where surfing competitions are held.

Karsen, our pilot was very competent and informative.

If you want to get an overview of Oahu, this is the perfect way to do it.

Always felt they had it together, at every moment. I work as an aviation maintenance tech at a major airport. I know how a good ground crew can make or break an operation, and these people just plain nailed it. Really GREAT team ! Now on to the RIDE ! Captain of our Ship was Kyle. I cannot possibly say enough positive things about his skill, personality, professionalism and obvious passion and dedication to his craft. A true artist (without the quirks, lol). I can honestly say the only thing wrong was I wish we had the whole evening. Kyle checked every possible box. Rainbows, waterfalls, whales!! He was super knowledgeable about the island (I wish we would have done the tour FIRST!). We had a slightly ‘airsick’ passenger. As such, Kyle accommodated her condition, whilst not watering down the experience for the rest of us. Bravo, Captain! Doors off is absolutely the way to go! I was on the outboard right side, and completely loved it. I’d go every day with Kyle, though I’m sure the rest of the pilot group is of similar caliber talent ( but request Kyle if you can – he’s that good – makes it seem ridiculously easy. And I know it is not!). Am I satisfied? Completely. Would I recommend Rainbow? Without hesitation. Enjoy your adventure- we certainly did!!! I was very hesitant (mainly because of my fear of heights) but the views from air were simply breath-taking. JoJo took us by a waterfall, and it was so beautiful! It was incredible to see Pearl Harbor from the air, too. If you can, take the 60-minute tour – you won’t regret it! Also, a big thank you to the ground crew and office staff. They were so professional and kind the entire time! We had to wait a few minutes before getting into the helicopter, and the conversations we had with the crew on the tarmac was great! We did a private, Royal Crown of Oahu, doors off tour. It was worth every penny. There are no words to describe this experience, JUST DO IT! It was by far the best excursion we’ve ever booked while on any vacation. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and efficient while prepping everyone to takeoff on time. Our pilot was Alex and he was amazing. He was very informative and knowledgeable of the entire island. He flew us over everything Oahu has to offer. To say the views are beautiful and breathtaking is an understatement. I literally cried… more than once. Lol. Simply gorgeous and incredible. We highly recommend doing a private doors off tour. One, you don’t have to share the experience with anyone but your group and two, you get to sit next to the door with absolutely nothing blocking your view. Omg! I can go on and on. 100000% the best! We’re in Oahu for a week. Flew in on a Friday afternoon and did this first thing Saturday morning. The best decision ever! We’ve been driving around visiting all the places we saw from the sky. We’re actually considering doing it again before we leave. This time with no cameras or gopros so we can just sit back and enjoy the views. Definitely going to request Alex for our pilot if possible. You will not regret this experience, Rainbow Tours is the best!

Such a cool experience. I live on the island so it was really neat to see everything from above. The views are stunning, and our pilot entertained us with facts but it wasn’t overbearing commentary. I wish there was a way to book my seat ahead of time because the customer by the door took social media videos the entire time, so I had to crane my neck back and forth to see the views. Also, the flight video wasn’t worth it for me. I thought the camera would’ve been set up outside the helicopter, but it was more like a dashboard cam. Overall, fantastic!! I plan on doing this again!

We have been in several helicopter rides in the past. The emails prior to leaving started giving us some concerns. But our concerns were unfounded. From the moment we showed up on site for the ride until we got back, it was excellent. The last time we had a helicopter ride for an hour, I believe we got 47 minutes total. When you’re paying about $30 a minute that could be very frustrating. Our pilot, Joel, gave us every bit of the hour that we were hoping for. Very enjoyable.

He did, however, repeatedly say “for those on the left side of the aircraft …,” yes we were on the right side, and saw lots of wonderful oceans. Tour was fantastic and fun! The welcome staff were warm and friendly. My first-time on a heli so getting a birds eye view of Oahu was amazing. We saw rainbows, waterfalls, and the beautiful beaches. Darrell did a nice job of giving insight to cool facts about Hawaii, Pearl Harbor, and the tidbits about the local communities. The only downer…if you are seated in seat 1 and 2 request to be moved because you’re next to the pilot console, we felt a bit cramped. Other than that this tour made our Valentine’s day super memorable.

An incredible way to see Oahu! I wish I had done this as soon as I arrived because you get a really good understanding of the island and where everything is. Our pilot Josh did a wonderful job at explaining all the different sights and was great at giving us a heads up whenever there was turbulence (only happened twice and very briefly). I generally get motion sickness when I travel but Josh was very smooth with take off and landing. I highly recommend the experience! You’ll never forget it.

Helicopter Companies Push To Reopen New Plan Restricting Air Tours Over Volcanoes Park

The air tour management plan for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is meant to address noise and environmental concerns. The industry says the new rules compromise safety.

The lead trade association for U.S. air tour operators is challenging a management plan for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park that went into effect in June, arguing it’s unsafe for pilots, blocks access for visitors with mobility issues and is squeezing air tours financially.

The plan drastically reduces the number of helicopter sightseeing flights allowed over the park, restricts the routes and altitudes that can be flown and designates at least 60 no-fly days per year, including Sundays. It does not limit tours on other routes over the Big Island.

Proponents of the Volcanoes plan say the measures are needed to limit damage to natural and cultural resources and disruptive noise generated by helicopter tourism. 

The industry and operators say they are supportive of those goals, but want the plan to be redone to address concerns about pilot and passenger safety and visitor access to the park. 

“With altitude restrictions they have in place, it doesn’t provide the flexibility the pilots need to deviate for weather,” said Cade Clark, chief government affairs officer for Vertical Aviation International, the trade group that filed a petition for review with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals earlier this summer . 

Clark said VAI wants to assure “that we’re working with the community and the industry to get the best possible outcome.”

But residents who live under or close to the flight path say the management plan was overdue and needs to stay in place.

Mountain View resident Daryl Soares, one of the residents who pushed for the management plan, was surprised by the filing.

“We thought this was a done deal,” he said.

Soares said before the plan went into effect, helicopters would fly over his home every 20 minutes. The difference since the plan went into effect has been “night and day,” he said.

The reduction in air tour traffic could also be the result of a downturn in tourist numbers on the Big Island due to the lack of volcanic activity, said Rob Pacheco of hiking tour company Hawai Forest and Trail.

State data confirms that Big Island tourism has been soft compared to the same period in 2023. Air tour landings at Hilo International Airport during June were down 40% compared to June 2023 according to Department of Transportation data.

The Volcanoes air tour plan “severely curtails the economic viability of air tour operators,” and vacating it while a new plan is developed would provide economic relief to operators, the filing said.

The case is all about money, Soares said, and operators “have no respect for people who live on the ground.”

‘Arbitrary And Capricious’

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Park Service were required to develop management plans for commercial air tours over national parks and tribal lands after Congress passed the National Parks Air Tour Management Plan Act in 2000.

But it took almost two decades for the first of those plans to be developed and it took litigation by a group of Hawaii residents and the nonprofit Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility to kickstart the process.

A 2019 lawsuit resulted in a federal court order leading to two dozen plans nationwide, including for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Haleakala National Park. The Haleakala plan is not mentioned in the VAI petition.

The Hawaii Volcanoes Air Tour Management Plan, finalized in December, authorizes 1,550 air tours a year, compared to 11,300 before the plan. It also designates three routes that avoid the summit of Kilauea, restricts flight times to between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and bans flights on Wednesdays and Sundays and certain holidays, with some exceptions for aircraft with quiet technology. 

Vertical Aviation International says it supports  management plans when they enable air tour operators to “conduct their business cooperatively with national park units.” But the plans can also have severe financial consequences for operators like Safari Helicopters Hawaii, co-plaintiffs in the suit.

Before the plan, Safari was permitted 3,920 flights per year over Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. That number is now 185, according to the filing.

The central allegation of the petition is that the FAA and NPS violated the Administration Practices Act by not “meaningfully evaluating” two issues that were raised in the 60-day public comment period required by federal legislation.

One was the issue of aircraft safety, and the other was the impact of reduced operations on people with disabilities or mobility issues who would be denied reasonable access to the park. The plan is therefore “arbitrary and capricious,” the filing said.

Cade said that VAI wanted the FAA to evaluate the public comments about safety in greater detail, and consider input from the National Parks Overflights Advisory Group, an FAA body that includes representatives from the industry.

Colleen Teubner, policy and litigation attorney for Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, based in Washington, D.C., said she was not intimately familiar with the Volcanoes case, but has been working on another legal action brought by VAI over air tours in South Dakota.

In that case, the court granted PEER and the Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks status as intervenors for the defendants, the FAA and NPS.

VAI was seeking to stay a ban on air tours over Badlands National Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial while it appealed the management plan.

The court in that case denied VAI’s request, finding that the FAA and NPS had followed the procedure laid out in federal legislation. That might be an indication of what the agencies will argue in the Volcanoes petition, Teubner said.

Media representatives for the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Park Service said they do not provide comment on pending litigation.

A helicopter crashed into the ocean off the Hawaiian island of Kauai on Thursday, leaving one person dead and two others missing, the Kauai Police Department said.

Hikers reported seeing the helicopter crash into the waters about a quarter of a mile (0.4 kilometers) off the Na Pali Coast and called police around 1:20 p.m., the police department said in a statement.

The Robinson R44 helicopter was part of Ali‘i Kaua‘i Air Tours and Charters, authorities said.

One person's body was recovered around 2:30 p.m. Thursday as crews continued to search for the remaining two people. Their identities were not immediately released by police.

L OS ANGELES ( KTLA ) – Freeway lanes were shut down after a helicopter made an emergency landing in South Los Angeles Thursday night.

The helicopter touched down on the southbound lanes of the 110 Freeway, just north of the 105 Freeway interchange, at around 8:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Three people, including the pilot, were aboard the small chopper when it made the emergency landing. They were able to exit the aircraft without injuries, authorities said.

The aircraft, a 2011 Robinson R44 II, took off from the Hawthorne Airport at 7:35 p.m.

Pilot Bruce Kafil told Nexstar’s KTLA he was taking a couple on an aerial tour of the city when they suddenly experienced power loss.

“I instructed my passengers to get out right away because I feared a possible collision from oncoming traffic,” Kafil recalled. “I had [the couple] go as far south as we reasonably could but the main rotor blade was still spinning and it made contact with a bus.”

An alert that shut down all southbound lanes of the 110 Freeway was later lifted.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene and worked to remove the downed helicopter. At least one of the helicopter’s blades appeared damaged.

Crews were seen lifting the chopper with a crane and placing it onto the flatbed of a tow truck.

“There were motorists on the road at the time of the incident,” said California Highway Patrol officer Bobby Eurin. “Officers did respond swiftly to stop traffic to avoid a major injury collision. It’s not every day that you see a helicopter land on the freeway.”

“We landed safely,” Kafil said with relief. “Everybody walked away. I’m very happy to be alive and to have my passengers as well.”

No injuries were reported, though traffic was backed up for miles as authorities worked to clear the scene.
