Bali is one of the most popular tropical destinations across the world. The fact that Bali has so many beaches, exciting beach clubs, breathtaking rice terraces, and activities lie surfing, diving, and lots more make it a popular destination among all kinds of people. I myself had planned a month-long sojourn in Bali to try and cover as much of the island as I can. Those of you who follow me on Instagram will know that I couldn't complete my trip due to a scooter accident. However, looking at the bright side, I've put together everything I know about how to plan a Bali budget trip into this blog post.

Budget Trip to Bali

A lot of people going to Bali are looking for cost-saving tips in order to make a budget trip to Bali. Since Bali is a huge island with so much to offer, you need a lot of time to cover most of it. Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud, Uluwatu, and 3 Nusa islands are some of the popular places in Bali. To cover most of Bali, you need to spend at least 10-15 days here minimum. And if you're spending so much time in one place, it's natural that you're looking for cost-saving tips. With this guide on how to make a budget trip to Bali, I hope to help you plan the perfect budget Bali trip for yourself

How to Reach Bali

If you're going to Bali from the US or some places in Europe, you may be able to find a direct flight. However, Air Asia is one of the cheapest and the carrier with most flights to and from cities in Asia. They have lots of flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok etc to Bali. Thus you can book a flight to one of these cities then take another one to Bali.

How to Reach Bali from India

There are many Indian and foreign airlines operating from India to Kuala Lumpur. At Kuala Lumpur, you can connect to a flight which will take you to Bali. You can even get connecting flights to Bali via Singapore or Thailand from India. I've broken down some of the budget airlines and their pros and cons below.

Air Asia is one of the major airlines operating to and from destinations in Asia. What I like about this airline is that there are many flights operating from multiple cities in India at different times of the day. I had lots of options when it came to choosing the city to fly out of India and the time of the day. One minus point though is that there is no checked luggage included. You will need to purchase that additionally if you wish to carry checked luggage. Other than that, Air Asia operates like any other budget airline I've flown with in India.

Malindo Air

I loved travelling by Malindo Air. There was so much legroom that I wasn't accustomed to seeing on budget airlines. Every seat came with a cute little back pillow . But that wasn't even the best part about travelling to Bali on a Malindo Air flight. There were entertainment units installed which had the latest TV shows and movies. In fact, there were shows for kids and games as well. Another thing I liked was the 15 kg checked baggage that came free with my flight ticket purchase. However, be careful that your checked bag does not weigh more than the permissible weight because the airline charges heavy fees for excess weight. Believe me, I've made the mistake and regret the exorbitant amount I had to pay.

Where to Stay in Bali

Whether you're looking for a short stay or a long term stay, whether you're on a tight budget or willing to splurge, you'll easily find LOTS of options in Bali. Take a look at the kind of stays I booked during my budget trip to Bali.

Book Hostels in Bali

Where to stay in Bali during a budget trip to Bali - Hostels

Bali has a lot of hostels with cool amenities. In fact, for most of my Bali trip, I had booked hostels. Each and every one of them came with a pool. How cool is that?! While I was in Canggu I stayed at the Canggu Castle hostel for quite a few days. The lounge and pool area was unlike anything I've ever seen in a  hostel. Plus they had comfy beds, clean rooms and even a nice terrace. This hostel is located in the Berawa Canggu area which is close to a lot of beach clubs and some amazing cafes and restaurants.

Rent Airbnbs in Bali

Where to stay in Bali during a budget trip to Bali - Airbnbs in Bali

Apart from hostels, I had even booked a few airbnbs to splurge and enjoy a private comfortable stay after a few hectic sightseeing days. Bali has a lot of amazing airbnbs - many of them even come with bathtubs, private pools and swings. The cost of these airbnbs ranges from extremely inexpensive to luxurious rates. There's something for every budget. What I loved about airbnbs in Bali though is that a lot of properties come with pools and nice balconies. Just enter your budget and amenities filters and search for the perfect stay for youself.

Bali Currency

The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) which is used in Bali, Indonesia is a weak currency. As of 21 April 2020, 1 Indian rupee (INR) is equivalent to 204 IDR and 1 USD is equivalent to 15682.50 IDR. This gives a slight advantage to anyone making a budget trip to Bali from India or from the US or Europe.

Where to Eat in Bali During a Bali Budget Trip

Where to eat in Bali during a budget trip to Bali - Local warungs

While there are plenty of cafes and upscale restaurants in Bali, I found that the most cost-effective way to have a good meal was to visit a local warung. Warungs in Bali are small restaurants run by locals. A lot of warungs have a buffet system where you pick dishes you like and only pay for what you eat which can cost as less as IDR 25k (roughly INR 150 or 2 USD). On the other hand, you can even order dishes from a menu. At the local warungs where I ate, I was able to have hearty delicious meals at unbelievably cheap prices. I recommend Warung O-Em-Ge in Canggu for a good nasi goreng.

Getting Around Bali

Uber is an unpopular option in Bali. The taxi unions do not like having outside organisations taking away business. Therefore there's another alternative to Uber in Bali which is called Grab . It works just like any cab-hailing app does. Just download the app, enter your pickup point and your destination and choose the type of ride. Another popular alternative is to book GoJek bikes in Bali. GoJek is an app which you can use to order a 2-wheeler ride at dirt cheap rates. A person on a motorcycle will arrive, hand you a helmet and take you to your destination. Apart from that, you can even hire taxis or rent motorcycles to get around Bali.

Tips for a Bali Budget Trip

Tips for a budget trip to Bali from India

While you can easily plan a budget trip to Bali just because the place offers everything for lesser prices compared to a majority of the world, there are a few tips you can use to ensure your Bali budget trip doesn't exceed the cost you had in mind.

Going from Bali Airport to the City

The Ngurah Rai airport in Bali is located at Denpasar approximately an hour's ride away from popular places like Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud. The ride from the Bali airport to the city centre can cost a lot if you give in to the exorbitant rates of the taxi operators there. The best way to avoid paying a heavy fare price to go from Bali airport to the city is to get out of the airport, cross the road to reach the parking and order a Grab or Bluebird taxi which charge nominal and fair rates. Beware that technically these taxis are banned at the airport but you can find them at the parking lot pick-up point. Read this article for more details, which I found quite helpful.

Beware of Currency Exchange Scams

Budget trip to Bali frfom India - Tips to avoid Bali currency scams

While there are a few popular Bali scams, you need to especially be wary of the currency exchange scam. If you find that you're getting an exchange rate which sounds too good to be true, chances are that it probably is! The way the scam takes place is that some local currency exchange shop will offer you a very good exchange rate. Once you hand over your money, a person sitting behind a counter counts the local currency to give you. Then they hand over the money to you. So what's the catch? After they have counted the money, they drop a few bills without you noticing and then hand over the money to you. So before you exit, count the entire amount handed over to you. If possible, exchange your currency at the airport or inside a bank.

Know Where to Withdraw Money in Bali

If you go through online forums, you'll come across a lot of people who say that they lost a lot of money after withdrawing money from an atm or they lost money after their card was swallowed by the atm. You can read about these scams in detail by doing a quick search. The way to avoid it is by only using ATMs located inside a bank. Another thing to remember is to never use an ATM inside a convenience store. Those ATMs are almost always rigged to swallow your card and scamming you out off a lot of money which can mess with your budget trip to Bali. Also, remember to always cover the keypad with your hand while entering your pin in the ATM machine and only use an ATM inside a bank .

Buy a Local Sim Card upon Arrival

Having a local sim card can benefit you in many ways. Firstly, you won't have to struggle to find wifi. Secondly, you can easily use Grab, Bluebird or GoJek to book cheap rides at your convenience anytime anywhere. Thirdly, you need not worry about excess data charges if you use your home country's sim card abroad in Bali. I bought a sim card upon arrival at Bali airport. Take a look at this article to navigate the Bali airport arrivals and for a few handy tips.

Shopping in Bali

No trip to Bali is complete without a little shopping or maybe lots of shopping. There are plenty of nice stores in Canggu and Seminyak as well as some markets such as Love Anchor that are set up to sell products. On the other hand, you'll find a large market in Ubud at all times. Haggling is common in Bali but the best way to enjoy a shopping spree in Bali without breaking the bank is by going early in the morning. The Balinese believe the first sale of the day to be auspicious. So show up in the morning, buy all your products from the same shop and negotiate a fair price.

How Much Does A 1-Week Trip To Bali Cost

how much a bali trip cost from india

How much does a 1-week trip to Bali cost, and what should your budget be?

This is a question I get asked a lot when helping friends, family, or readers plan their trip to the Island of the Gods . Is this part of Indonesia expensive ? If I only have 7 days to see Bali, how much money do I need?

This depends a lot on your lifestyle and what type of traveller you are. If you’re a backpacker, you might get away with a relatively low price, but a luxury lifestyle can quickly get expensive in Bali.

I broke down the cost in detail for budget, mid-range and luxury 1-week trips, using data from my own money spending habits and previous excursions to Bali. I’ve been coming to the island for years as a backpacker, tourist, and, later on, luxury traveller, and I now live there permanently. If someone knows what they’re talking about when it comes to how much money you need for a week in Bali – it’s me.

But I won’t just give you a number on how much you need for your seven days on the island because every traveller is different. You might not want to spend money on the same things as me, so I broke down every single category, which lets you make your own calculations for your week in Bali.

When is the best time to travel to Bali?

The best time to visit Bali depends on several factors, including your personal preferences and the type of activities you want to do. Here’s a little insight into Bali’s seasons, if you want it a little more specific, read our worst or best time to visit Bali post.

Dry season: The dry season, which lasts roughy from May to September, is the best time to visit Bali if you want to avoid rain, enjoy sunny weather and do lots of outdoor activities. Unfortunately, this is also the busiest and most expensive time to visit.

Rainy season: The rainy season, which lasts from November to March, is the best time to visit Bali if you want to avoid crowds and get cheaper prices for accommodation. However, be prepared for occasional rain and fewer sunny days. Outdoor activities are weather dependent and may not be able to be done as you would like.

Mid-season: March to May and September to November are considered “mid-season” in Bali and offer a good mix of good weather and fewer crowds. However, there is the occasional rainfall that you should be prepared for.

Bali is a tropical island and is warm and humid all year round, with temperatures averaging 27°C to 33°C.

How much does a 1-week trip to Bali cost?

The cost of a 1-week stay in Bali can vary greatly depending on your travel style, choice of accommodation and planned activities.

Is Bali expensive?

Not really, but it’s also not incredibly cheap, unfortunately, especially for a 7-day trip, where the cost can quickly add up.

On average, here are some rough estimates:

  • Budget-friendly: €313 (~ $511 AUD) per person for 1 week in Bali without flights
  • Mid-range: €728 (~ $1,188 AUD) per person for 1 week in Bali without flights
  • Luxury: €1793 (~ $2,926 AUD) per person for 1 week in Bali without flights
  • Organised trip : €700 (~ $1,150 AUD) per person for 1 week in Bali without flights. Read our review here .

Note that these are only rough estimates, and prices may vary depending on the season and location. It is always a good idea to find out what your options are and plan your budget accordingly.

* Referring to international flights in economy from Europe or the United States . Prices depend on the number of stopovers and the quality of airlines. Divide this number by 2 or 3 for flights from Australia . ** The category “extras” includes unexpected expenses, tips, souvenirs or add-ons you would like to spend money on during your week in Bali. *** Prices adjusted for double rooms (except for dorms in hostels), and reduced transportation and extra costs

How much are flights to Bali?

Flights to Bali can be expensive, especially if you’re departing from Europe or the United States. You’ll have to do at least one stopover, maybe even two. Australians have it easier and can usually choose between a variety of direct flights to Bali from large cities like Sydney, Perth, Melbourne or Brisbane.

Flights from Europe and the US

You should expect to pay at least €500 (~$816 AUD) for a return flight from Europe to Bali, although this is already a very low price and may only be available in the off-season or if you book far in advance. €700 to €900 (~ $1,142 AUD to $1,469 AUD) is more realistic and will mean you’ll have to do one or two stopovers along the way. For €1,200 (~ $1959 AUD)or more, you’ll get tickets for a more reputable airline like Qatar Airways, Emirates or Lufthansa with only one stop.

Common stops between Europe or the US and Bali are Doha, Singapore, Bangkok, Istanbul, Dubai, Seoul, or Manila.

Flights from Australia

From Australia, you can find return flights to Bali for as little as €150 (~ $245 AUD) if you’re lucky. However, €300 to €400 (~ $490 AUD to $653 AUD) is a more realistic average cost if you’re flying from southern cities in Australia and booking during the high season. You’ll find that airlines like Jetstar, Virgin, or local Indonesian carriers like Malinda Air, Air Asia, or Batik Air are the most common, and most connections will take you directly to Bali without stopping.

How much does an Indonesian visa for a 1-week trip to Bali cost?

A tourist visa for Bali costs €28 (~ $45 AUD), which you can pay on arrival either by cash or card. This is a standard fee and does not change. Since late 2022, you can also apply for and pre-pay this visa online through the official government website . The price is the same as it is if you pay on arrival, but the process is faster if you do it online.

This tourist visa allows you to stay in Indonesia for up to 30 days (and you can even extend it to 60 days for an additional fee), so it’s plenty of time for your week in Bali.

Don’t forget about the new tourist tax , which is IDR 150,000 (€9 or $ 14 AUD) per person and can be paid online in advance.

Travel insurance for your 1-week Bali trip

You always need to have travel insurance, even if you’re just going to be gone for a week. Double-check if your credit cards or other insurances might include medical coverage abroad, and if so, what it actually includes. Accidents can always happen, and you want to be prepared. You should differentiate between travel insurance, which includes things like cancelled flights and lost baggage and medical travel insurance, which allows you to go to a doctor or be treated in case of an accident. Both are important, but if you only choose one, make sure to get medical coverage.

Travelling for longer than a week?

Every traveller should have insurance , including coverage for medical emergencies , hospital visits and unforeseen accidents. SafetyWing is not only the best choice for shorter trips but also offers long-term plans for digital nomads or those travelling for extended periods of time. They have a great selection of plans, including trip insurance, which supports you in case of cancelled flights or lost baggage .

My favourite part is that they offer adventure sports coverage ad-ons , so you can do all the exciting acitivites without having to worry about taking unneccesary risks.

No matter where you’re travelling, you cannot put a price on peace of mind. Find out more about SafetyWing here .

Where to stay in Bali for a 1-week trip and how much is it?

There are many great places to stay for a week in Bali, depending on your interests and budget. There are pros and cons of staying at a villa vs a hotel and some of the most popular options are:

* budget referring to a bed in a hostel dorm or a very basic private room ** mid-range referring to an average hotel room with a central location and a communal pool *** luxury referring to a more upscale hotel, resort, or small private villa

Always compare prices for hotels. We at Guide Your Travel prefer Booking.com , Agoda or Hostelworld for finding the best deals.

More unusual places to stay in Bali

If you’re looking for a quieter experience in Bali, away from the crowds, consider staying in one of these places for a few nights.

  • Sidemen: Often considered more authentic and peaceful than Ubud , Sidemen will satisfy your cravings for rice fields, yoga and nature.
  • Kintamani: Located on a lake with a backdrop of Bali’s majestic volcanos, this area is breathtakingly beautiful and popular for glamping
  • Lovina: See dolphins in their natural habitat and enjoy long walks on black-sand beaches.
  • Amed: Go scuba diving to explore hidden shipwrecks and Bali’s stunning underwater world.
  • West Bali: Snorkel at untouched reefs, hike to lost waterfalls, and enjoy some of the best views on the island.

How much does a resort in Bali for seven days cost?

Nusa Dua, which is located in southern Bali, has the best selection of resorts on the island, although you’ll also find some in Seminyak, Sanur, Ubud, or Uluwatu . You might be able to find a basic resort room for a week in Bali for around €100 (~ $163 AUD), but the best ones cost at least €250 (~ $408 AUD) per night or more. The price is worth it, though, and you’ll get to enjoy private beaches, child-care facilities, world-class restaurants and plenty of infinity pools.

Uma Kalai is the best boutique resort in Ubud by far. You’ll love it! You can check availability and prices here. You’ll also love these beautiful beachfront resorts in Uluwatu .

How much is a villa in Bali for a 1-week trip?

Villa prices in Bali change drastically depending on the location. In more remote parts of the island, you can find beautiful properties with two to three bedrooms for as little as €100 (~ $163 AUD) per night. However, if you’re looking in Canggu, Seminyak or Uluwatu , you’ll be paying at least €90 (~ $147 AUD) or more per bedroom, even for basic properties. This price usually includes a private pool, kitchen, ensuite bathrooms for every room, cleaning, and sometimes even breakfast.

Uluwatu has the best selection of villas, so consider renting one if you’ll be staying down south. Another great strategy I highly recommend is looking for a beautiful villa in a remote part of Bali, which will be a fraction of the price of those in popular locations.

Bali Villa how much does it cost for 1 week trip budget drone pool

How much is a hotel or guesthouse in Bali?

You can find a basic hotel room for as little as €20 (~ $33 AUD) per night in parts of Bali, although you might pay up to €50 (~ $82 AUD) in more expensive areas. For this price, you’ll get a nice room with a private bathroom, access to a shared pool and even free breakfast sometimes. If you’re looking for a more elevated experience, you’ll find luxury hotel rooms from around €100 to €300 (~ $163 AUD to $490 AUD), depending on the location and level of service. Some even come with private pools, but that can almost be considered a small villa.

How much is a hostel in Bali?

Hostels are a fantastic way to stay in Bali on a budget while meeting new friends and will allow you to keep accommodation costs at a minimum. For a bed in a shared dorm of a basic hostel, you can expect to pay between €5 and €15 (~ $8 AUD to $24 AUD) per night, depending on where it is located in Bali. Nicer, more upscale hostels around Canggu, Seminyak or Uluwatu will cost as much as €20 (~ $32 AUD) per night. Generally, you can expect to have a bunk bed with curtains, AC, WiFi, nightlights and lockers in most hostels, even if they’re very affordable. Don’t forget to bring your own lock if you’re staying in a hostel so you can keep your belongings secure. We use this lock and it’s always reliable and has lasted for years

Hostels are some of the best places to make friends as a solo traveller. If you need even more ways to meet people in Bali this detailed guide will help you out.

Food cost for a 1-week trip to Bali

What you spend on food in a week in Bali will depend on your own personal preferences. You can get away with as little as €6 per day but realistically, you’ll most likely spend closer to €20 if you’re going to be eating at different types of restaurants. Note that many small street food places only take cash , so come prepared.

All prices include a non-alcoholic drink. * Local or street food, referring to eating in an Indonesian warung, which has mostly fried rice, vegetable or noodle dishes ** Average restaurant, referring to a Western or Indonesian venue with sit-down dining and a variety of cuisines *** Upscale restaurant, referring to an elevated place or beach club with a luxury audience

It is not cheaper to cook at home in Bali. Groceries tend to be expensive, so even if your accommodation has a kitchen, you’ll most likely spend more than you would be eating at a local restaurant.

How much is local food in Bali?

The cheapest place to eat in Bali is at a local warung (a small, basic restaurant) or at a street food vendor. You can eat a local meal in Bali for less than €1 (~ $1.60 AUD), especially if you order nasi or mie goreng (fried rice or noodles), or get street food like bakso (soup with meatballs) or nasi bungkus (rice with chilli and meat). With a soft drink or water , you’ll usually spend around €1.50 to €2.50 (~ $2.40 AUD to $4 AUD) per meal. You’ll most likely have to eat the same type of meal for breakfast as well, although some warungs have western options like eggs with toast or pancakes for similar prices. A cup of local, black Bali coffee will cost around €0.70 (~ $1.15 AUD) or less.

balli indonesian food warung how much 1 week trip budget cost

How much are average restaurants in Bali?

Most restaurants in Bali charge between €5 and €10 (~ $8 AUD to $16 AUD) per meal (including a non-alcoholic drink), which includes different types of Western cuisines such as Italian, Mexican, or Indian food. Areas like Seminyak or Canggu will be slightly more expensive than places around Ubud or Kuta. Check out these vegan restaurants in Canggu and our favourite romantic dinner options in the area to get an idea of the prices.

How much are upscale restaurants in Bali?

If you’re looking for more luxurious meals in beautiful locations like beach clubs or fancy restaurants, you’ll pay around €12 to €25 (~ $19 AUD to $41 AUD) per meal, possibly more if you’re dining at an expensive steak house, for example. The best place to go out for a special dinner will be in Seminyak, specifically Petitenget.

Do you have a special occasion or birthday coming up during your Bali trip? We’ve collected 61 ideas on how you can celebrate on the Island of the Gods that go beyond just eating at a fancy restaurant.

Things to do in Bali for 1 week and how much they cost

A lot of activities in Bali are free or very cheap, such as going to the beach, hiking, seeing a waterfall or exploring rice fields. Others will cost a bit more, but generally, prices on the Island of the Gods are reasonable, so you won’t have to budget too much for activities, even on a luxury trip.

* It’s easy to plan a day trip to Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan from Bali yourself, and you’ll spend a lot less than if you book a tour package. However, you’ll have to organise your ferry tickets, hotel pickup, scooter rental/driver (since there is no grab or gojek on the island), as well as plan your itinerary . If you don’t mind doing this and want to save some money, you can plan your day trip independently. ** A lot of travellers book a day trip tour to go to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan from Bali. You’ll pay a bit more but will have everything taken care of, including transport, drivers, activities and even meals. If you don’t want to worry about timing and planning an itinerary, this is a great option, and you’ll even meet fellow travellers along the way.

Prices can depend on the season when you’re visiting and how many people are participating (for some tours). If you’re quoted a price that is significantly more expensive than the one listed above, you should haggle to make sure you’re not getting ripped off.

Cost of Nightlife in Bali on a 1-week trip

If you enjoy going out in the evenings, the cost of nightlife can quickly add up during your time in Bali. Beach clubs are generally very expensive, but even regular nightlife venues and bars charge high prices. Unfortunately, Bali isn’t as affordable as other places in South East Asia when it comes to nightlife, so don’t forget these expenses in your budget.

Not a nightlife person? Perfect, your week in Bali will be a lot cheaper.

DON’T MISS OUT

If you have no idea where to party in Bali and are worried you’ll end up at overpriced clubs that just aren’t fun, we’ve got just the thing for you. Our newsletter about what’s happening in Bali this week goes out every single Monday, and it’s packed with current news, a detailed nightlife guide, advice on where to stay and digital nomad meetups happening this week. You’ll love it!

Alcohol prices in Bali

Alcohol can be pricey in Bali, although it depends a lot on where you are on the island. Canggu and Seminyak are notoriously expensive when it comes to drinks, and you’ll quickly pay €4 (~ $6.60 AUD) for a small local beer and €10 (~ $16.50 AUD) for a cocktail, if not more.

Keep in mind that unlike in Europe, the US or Australia, alcohol in South East Asia is generally not a lot cheaper in a supermarket than it is in a bar. This means that you won’t save much money having drinks at home, vs going out to a bar, unless it’s a very expensive one. Find out more about beer prices in Bali and how to stick to a budget here.

Entrance fees to clubs and events

Bali has a variety of nightclubs and venues hosting international DJs regularly. On normal nights without a special act, you can expect to pay around €7 to €15 (~ $11.50 to $24.70 AUD) entrance fee to clubs, although there are also a lot of free ones to choose from.

On special events with a high-profile DJ, most clubs charge between €15 and €30 (~ $24.70 to $49.40 AUD) in entrance fees if you buy tickets a few weeks in advance. Last-minute tickets can cost as much as €50 (~ $82.40 AUD) or more. Nights like New Year’s Eve are incredibly expensive, and large beach clubs charge well over €100 (~ $165 AUD) per ticket.

We highly recommend LXXY rooftop pool cub in Kuta, which has an all-you-can-eat-and-drink BBQ every night for only around €10.

Clubs around Seminyak and Kuta often host lady’s nights where women drink for free for a few hours or even the entire evening. If you’re looking to save money on a night out in Bali, definitely go to one of these events.

How much does it cost to get around Bali on a 1-week trip?

Bali has a variety of transport modes, so you can pick one that suits your budget for your week in Bali.

Taxi, grab, or gojek

One of the easiest ways to get around Bali is to use ridesharing services like grab or gojek ( just don’t try to use Uber ). You can also use local taxis, although they may mark up the price slightly. Just make sure they always use the meter and avoid fixed prices.

The cheapest way to get around is definitely a motorbike taxi through gojek or grab. These cost less than €1 for short rides and are also much quicker since you won’t be stuck in traffic, saving you precious time during your week in Bali.

Did you know that ridesharing apps like gojek and grab are prohibited in many parts of Bali including the airport and Nusa Penida ? The local taxi drivers create no-grab zones where you won’t be able to find a pickup, even if the app looks like it works. Drop-offs are usually fine, but even that can have restrictions. The most common no-grab zones are around the beaches in Canggu , Uluwatu , Nusa Dua and Seminyak , at Tanah Lot Temple , on islands like Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan , at the harbours in Sanur and Padang Bai as well as parts of central Ubud . Usually, you can walk for around 5 to 10 minutes, and you’ll find a grab or gojek without an issue.

Renting a scooter for a 1-week trip to Bali

If you’re looking for maximum flexibility during your time in Bali, you should look into renting a scooter. They’re affordable and will make it easy to get around on the island, allowing you to be spontaneous. Sometimes it can be difficult to find a taxi or grab in remote areas, and you’ll be grateful that you’ve got a scooter in those cases. Generally, the longer you rent, the cheaper the price is. Expect to pay between €4 and €7 (~ $6.60 to $11.50 AUD) per day or around €25 to €35 (~ $41.20 to $57.70 AUD) per week, depending on the type of scooter you’re renting. Vario or Scoopy models are generally the cheapest, and NMAX, XMAX or Vespas are the most expensive. The year of release also plays a role in the price.

Riding a scooter in Bali can be dangerous, even for experienced drivers. Accidents are common, and a lot of tourists do not obey the traffic rules, leading to drunk driving incidents, fatal accidents, or riding without the correct licence. Always prioritise your own safety and never drive without a helmet. When in doubt, take a taxi.

Update: In March of 2023, Bali made headlines because the government is banning foreigners on tourist or business/social visas from renting scooters. This was called into effect after an increasing number of traffic violations and accidents. To this date there has been no evidence that renting a scooter is no longer possible, and I myself personally currently rent one on the island. You will not run into any issues if you have the correct licence, wear a helmet and appropriate clothing. We’ll keep you updated should that change.

Hiring a driver

Hiring a driver is the most comfortable way to get around Bali. If you only have a week on the island, you’re going to want to get around comfortably. This is also the best option for groups of three to six people, who would have to rent several scooters otherwise. Most drivers have six seats in their car and will take you anywhere you want to go on the island. Expect to pay between €30 and €40 (~ $49.40 to $65.90 AUD) per day (either 8 or 10 hours), which includes parking fees and fuel. You can also refer to our complete pricing guide for private drivers in Bali . It’s a nice gesture to pay for the lunch of your driver and give them a tip at the end of the day.

Some drivers also act as tour guides, while others are simply there to take you from A to B and do not speak a lot of English. Make sure to clarify this before you book so you can adjust your expectations. You can either tell the driver your desired itinerary for the day, or they can suggest one for you.

If you ask a driver for their daily price, you’ll most likely get a very high number. It’s normal to haggle a bit until you’re happy with the price. Just keep it reasonable and consider that the driver has to pay for fuel and the car they are using is often rented, so the money that they take home to their family at the end of the day is often very little.

Where can I find drivers in Bali?

You’ll have no trouble finding a reliable driver in Bali. Here are the best strategies:

  • Ask at your accommodation. They will recommend a driver, and you’re likely to have a great experience, however, you might not be able to negotiate the price much.
  • Ask in a Facebook group. You’ll love groups like “Bali Community”, “Backpackers Indonesia” or “Digital Nomads Bali”, and if you ask for the number of a driver, you’ll get dozens of recommendations instantly, allowing you to find the best price easily.
  • Look online. Trip Advisor and other big websites have a collection of numbers for drivers in Bali, with great varieties in how much they cost. They usually have reviews, so you’ll get an idea of their quality of service.
  • Ask your grab or taxi driver. Most will be happy to take you around for the day, and you’ll already know the driver, so you might feel more comfortable with them.
  • Send us a message! We’re your new favourite Bali experts and will be happy to recommend our favourite drivers to you.

Renting a car

It’s not very common for tourists to rent a car (without a driver) in Bali. You won’t find any large car rental companies here and very little information online. It is possible, though, to rent a car in Bali, and it may be a good choice for larger groups of people who want to explore more remote parts of Bai with complete flexibility. The price per day for car rentals will be cheaper than hiring a driver, but in the end, the difference isn’t huge, so you may be more comfortable being driven around. Renting a car is really only worth it for multi-day trips where you change location frequently. If you’re only going to be in the areas around Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Sanur, or Uluwatu, you’ll have trouble finding parking and will be stuck in traffic quite a lot. You’ll find more use for a rental car in the north or west of Bali.

Public transport and local transportation in Bali

Bali’s public transport is essentially non-existent, and I wouldn’t recommend relying on it as a tourist, especially if you only have a week. Instead, use grab/gojek or hire a private driver so you can save time. If you do want to use Bali’s public buses, there aren’t too many to choose from. The Kura-Kura route that connects Kuta to Ubud is popular, and then there is the Perama bus , which connects southern to North Bali on two routes. You can also use the DAMRI airport bus , but it will drop you off in the middle of nowhere, which isn’t very helpful since you’ll have to take a taxi from there anyway.

The bus prices in Bali usually don’t make any sense, which is why it’s usually not the best thing to do if you want to save money. The airport buses are quite cheap, and some routes are useful, although grab and gojek won’t be a lot more expensive.

Here are some popular routes, but there are plenty more options available if you check out the Perama bus website .

Using buses in Bali is only worth it if you’re travelling alone and don’t want to drive a scooter. Even then, the price may be very similar to, if not more than a grab or gojek.

Airport pick-up and drop-off (Klook)

Did you know that gojek and grab don’t really work as you might expect them to at Bali’s airport ? When you’re arriving, you’ll need a reliable and affordable airport pickup so you won’t waste any time during your week in Bali. I’ve arrived at this airport dozens of times (I’ve stopped counting) and have tried just about every airport transfer there is. Klook is the best and cheapest by far for private transfers, and they’ve never let me down. The driver even waits for up to two hours if your flight is delayed or you need some extra time to get through immigration. Book your transport a few days in advance to secure the best price and arrive relaxed, knowing you’re paying a fraction of what everyone else on your plane is spending to get to your hotel.

Fastboat to Nusa Penida , Nusa Lembongan, or the Gili Islands

If you’re squeezing in a trip to the islands during your time in Bali, you’re going to need a fast boat ticket. There are endless ferry companies to choose from, and the good news is that they’re all pretty much the same.

The ride can be rough, and most boats do not have air conditioning (even if they claim they do) and are very cramped. Adjust your expectations, follow our tips against seasickness and you’ll be absolutely fine!

If you’re headed to Padang Bai to catch a ferry, you need to read our guide on how to use grab or gojek at the harbour

Sim card cost in Bali for a 1-week trip

You’re going to need an Indonesian sim card during your week in Bali so you can use grab or gojek and get around easily. Luckily, they’re very affordable, and you should get one as soon as possible. Just not directly at the airport, where you’ll pay a very high price. Make sure to pre-book your airport pickup and then buy a sim card somewhere close to your hotel. You’ll find them in little tourist shops, phone stores or even at some hotels. Ask at your accommodation, and they’ll be happy to point you in the right direction should you have trouble.

A normal price for a sim card with around 8 GB of data is around €7 (~ $11.50 AUD), which can be used for a month.

If you’re trying to save money, get a sim card with a very small data package and then top it up using the Telkomsel app. The data in the app is significantly cheaper than in a shop, and you’ll often find fash deals like 30GB for 5€ (~ $8.20 AUD). You just have to download the app and enter your credit card.

Yes, $3,000 USD is more than enough for a 7-day trip to Bali, even for two people who are not on a budget and can be flexible with the cost.

THE INDIAN NOMAD

HOW EXPENSIVE IS BALI

Beach

BALI - The first thing that comes to one's mind is honeymoon, romantic nights, the beautiful beaches, nightlife etc etc. Add to the fact that the Indonesian Rupiah is highly devalued (Presently 1 INR = 200 IDR approximately), people tend to think that we can get a free stay in Bali, literally. But that's not exactly the case. Even though the value of the Indonesian Rupiah is very less, it does not mean that everything is dirt cheap. Prices are almost at par with Indian prices, if not more.

In this article, I will give a rough idea on the expenses that may be incurred in Bali. This guide is just meant to give a rough estimation for planning a trip to Bali.

Taxi on the Street

Let's start with the first thing that you will incur after getting out of the airport. You guessed it right. It's transportation. Since, there is no public transportation available in Bali, you are forced to take a cab from the airport to your hotel. Instead of haggling with the taxi drivers for fare, it is better to book an app based taxi (if available). Grab Cab and Blue Bird Taxi are the most popular app based taxis there. But there is a catch. The local cab drivers normally don't allow app based taxis to the airport . Call it goondagiri (a thug) or whatever, but that's the harsh truth. If you are lucky to get an app based cab, hop into it immediately without wasting a single moment. Otherwise, go over to the normal taxi drivers waiting there. Coming to the price, i paid 150,000 IDR (Approximately INR 750) from Denpasar Airport to my hotel at Seminyak. The distance was around 11 kms. I am of the opinion that I had perhaps paid extra. However, I let it go as it was my first international trip and also I had very less idea that time. I stayed at THE PING HOTEL. However, the price mentioned was in 2018. You can just take this rate as a rough estimate for your ride.

Hotel TV

The next expense you will incur is in your hotel price. There are lots of hotels suited for every one's budget in Bali. You can get hostels for as low as INR 400 per night per bunk bed. Good budget hotels are available for around INR 1000-INR 2000 per night. Villas and Bungalows facing the sea will obviously be costly and will depend on your budget. You can also stay in an AirBnB to take advantage of lower rates. Hotels are generally clean and well maintained. However, be sure to check out the ratings of a particular hotel in reputed sites like Tripadvisor.

CLICK HERE TO BOOK A HOTEL IN BALI

CLICK HERE TO BOOK AN AIRBNB IN BALI

Snack Food

Food prices are almost the same price as in India. So, you may expect to spend INR 300-400 in a Mc Donalds or KFC or about INR 1000-1500 in an Indian Restaurant. There are varieties of restaurants, fast food and street food available all throughout Bali. A thing to keep in mind while trying out street food is that many dishes are made of fish oil and that smells really horrible. So, be prepared to bear the pungent smell of fish oil. If you can manage to bear that, you will surely enjoy the fascinating varieties of street food in Bali. Indian food is available as well as vegetarian restaurants, You just need to search for an Indian restaurant. Food quality in the restaurants is quite good.

Coming to beverages, the prices are reasonable. The price of a beer in a supermarket is in fact cheaper than Indian prices. The same beer in a bar or pub will cost you slightly higher. Still, the prices are quite within range and you can blow your cash without feeling guilty.

Hence, while planning a trip to Bali, you can plan it in the same way like planning your vacation in an Indian city. Bali is a very beautiful and affordable destination. Make sure you visit it once in your lifetime!

One of the biggest hassles you will ever encounter during your trip to Bali is local transportation. This is because there is no public transportation while transfers can be quite costly. However, this should not stand in your way to having a memorable vacation. All you need is to plan and budget well.

Motorbike is an affordable and easy local transportation to get around during your stay in Bali. However, it can be a bit dangerous for anyone without motorbike riding experience despite it being an affordable deal. You will also need to have an international driver license despite it not being a requirement for renting one. This is because police will always pull you over for their regular checkups. It will cost you $20 to $30 to rent a motorbike for one week. Ensure you ask around for a reputable and reliable renter and do not forget to check the bike for any damages or scratches to avoid getting the blame.

However, if riding a motorbike is not your thing, expect to pay some significantly higher amounts to get around in Bali as you will have to hire a local driver. Yes, there are ubers. However, there are lots of problems and violence between them and the normal taxi drivers. Hence, there are areas where uber are not allowed. At times some drivers will take off leaving you stranded whenever they feel it is not safe. This makes uber not that secure and safe mode on transit in Bali.

Taxis are very popular in Canggu, Seminyak and Kuta. Just like in other countries, taxi drivers in Bali also have rip off their clients. Only use reputable taxi companies and ensure the meter is always turned on.

Whenever you have plans of going any distance, it is highly recommended that you hire a private driver. Most of the private car hires will cost around $50 or more for a single trip. You are free to haggle but keep in mind it is an expensive form of travel in Bali. You can save on transportation costs by basing yourself in either one or two areas during your entire vacation in Bali. You can also rely on group trips.

Important Tip: When you find a driver you like, consider making special arrangement for multiple day trips at discounted rates. Private drivers will definitely be happy with the business and high chances he or she will give you some good discount.

I live in Bali and wrote more than 70 articles on the Island :

There are activities such as diving in Bali, Hiking or booking a guided tour. These activities usually cost much more.

Are you a scuba diving fan and will be visiting Bali? Then you have to spare some cash for their will make your trip unforgettable. Bali is a scuba diving paradise; so, ensure you do some couple of dives. On average, scuba diving costs between $100 and $200 a day for four dives. You can never do without foods and drinks. However, like accommodation, the prices vary depending on what you will be going for. For example, when you opt for the western foods, you will spend close to three times compared to if you go for the street food which can cost a mere $2 per meal. Most travelers are known to prefer both the western and local food. Breakfast will be served in the villa, hostel or hotel you book. Lunch can cost you close to $5 while dinner can shoot to $20. This totals $25 together with soft drinks in a day. Breakfast has not been included since most of the private villas and hotels do serve breakfast.

If you have plans of alcoholic drinks, add more to your budget. Beers cost less than wine or cocktails in Bali. Bintang is among the most popular options of alcohol brands in the island . However, if you prefer cocktails, consider the two for one special.

It is difficult to go for a vacation and fail to fall in love with some souvenirs. Despite not being a shopping mecca, you will come across a few things you want to carry back home. Some of the most popular souvenirs for most travelers to Bali are coffee, tea and Batik Sarongs. Despite them being available in different qualities, none of them is quite costly unless you intend to purchase copious amounts.

Massages are very popular in Bali. You will definitely want to have some experience. Most travelers indulge in massages with others opting to have a feel on a daily basis. Although this might not be the case for every visitor to Bali, I assume you will want to have the experience either once or twice a week. The basic massages cost approximately $10 an hour. Massages and random shopping in mind will cost you up to $100. Ensure that you get a good price as most tourists are always cheated on the rates.

ADDITIONAL TIPS :

Saving money during your trip to Bali doesn’t mean you have to compromise on the experience. With some careful planning and smart choices, you can enjoy this beautiful destination without breaking the bank. Here are some tips to help you save money while traveling in Bali.

1. Travel during the offseason: Bali’s peak tourist season is from July to August and during the Christmas and New Year period. Consider visiting during the offseason, typically from April to June and September to November, when prices for accommodations and activities are generally lower.

2. Accommodation: Opt for budget-friendly accommodations such as guesthouses, hostels, or homestays instead of luxury resorts. Research and book your accommodation in advance to take advantage of early booking discounts and deals.

4. Eat local: Enjoying meals at local warungs (small family-owned restaurants) and street food stalls can be much cheaper than dining at upscale tourist restaurants. Not only is the food delicious, but it’s also a great way to experience the local culture. Check our guide of local food HERE

5. Bargain at markets: When shopping at local markets and street vendors, don’t be afraid to haggle. Bargaining is a common practice in Bali, and you can often get items for a much lower price than initially quoted.

6. Free and low-cost activities: Bali offers plenty of free and low-cost activities, such as visiting temples , exploring rice terraces, hiking , and enjoying the beautiful beaches . Research these options and plan your itinerary around them to save on expensive tours and attractions.

7. BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle): Bali’s hot climate can make you go through drinks quickly. Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it from large water jugs to save on buying bottled water.

8. Avoid unnecessary tours: While some tours and activities are certainly worth the expense, others may not be. Be selective about the tours you book and consider exploring some attractions independently.

9. Exchange money wisely : Be mindful of where you exchange your currency. Avoid exchanging money at the airport or in touristy areas, as these places often offer unfavorable rates. Instead, use ATMs to withdraw cash in the local currency, as this will typically give you a better exchange rate.

Picture21 11 Bali travel cost

10. Use local SIM cards : Instead of using international roaming, purchase a local SIM card for your phone. This will allow you to stay connected at a much lower cost.

By following these tips, you can make your trip to Bali more affordable without missing out on the incredible experiences this destination has to offer.

Picture23 10 Bali travel cost

There you have it! You can now approximate on how much you can set aside for your entire Bali trip especially if it a one week trip. I am Eric, a French Australian citizen based between Australia, Asia and Bali an I love to travel and experience the world. I generally like outdoor activities, wellness, great food and venues , party and real local adventures ! I am a Yoga practitioner and fitness lover

I created this  blog because I love to travel and I want to share my experiences with others. I’ve been traveling since I was a child, and I’ve been to over 50 countries. I’ve seen some amazing things and met some amazing people, and I want to help others experience the same things.

I believe that travel is one of the best ways to learn about the world and about yourself. When you travel, you’re forced to step outside of your comfort zone and experience new things. You learn about different cultures, different religions, and different ways of life. You also learn about yourself, your strengths, and your weaknesses.

Travel can also be a great way to make new friends. When you’re traveling, you’re surrounded by people from all over the world, and you’re all in the same boat. You’re all there to explore and experience new things, and that can create a bond between people.

Table of Contents

Understanding the Cost Factors

Before we dive into the planning process, let’s discuss the key cost factors you’ll need to consider.

The airfare from India to Bali is a significant part of the budget. Depending on the time of booking, the airline you choose, and the flight’s route, prices can vary greatly.

Here’s a list of airlines that frequently operate flights from major Indian cities to Denpasar, Bali, along with approximate prices for a round-trip ticket:

  • AirAsia : One of the most budget-friendly options, AirAsia, offers flights from cities like Delhi and Mumbai to Bali. The prices typically range from INR 20,000 to INR 30,000, depending on the time of booking and season.
  • Malindo Air : This airline provides a good balance between cost and comfort, with fares typically ranging from INR 22,000 to INR 35,000.
  • Garuda Indonesia : As the national carrier of Indonesia, Garuda operates regular flights to Bali, offering a more premium experience. Prices usually fall within INR 35,000 to INR 45,000.
  • Singapore Airlines : With a layover in Singapore, this airline offers excellent service, but it comes with a heftier price tag. Expect to pay between INR 40,000 and INR 50,000 for a round trip.
  • Malaysia Airlines : Another option with a layover, this time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Airlines’ fares typically range between INR 25,000 and INR 40,000.

Please note that these prices are approximate and can vary based on when and where you book, how far in advance you book, and the time of year you plan to travel. It’s also important to consider that additional charges may apply for baggage and in-flight amenities. Always compare flight prices from different airlines and booking platforms to secure the best deal.

Accommodation

Bali offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget hostels to luxury resorts. The choice of accommodation significantly impacts your overall budget.

Other Important Factor of Bali Budget Trip

Food and drink.

Bali is known for its delicious cuisine, with options to fit every budget. Whether you’re enjoying street food or fine dining, the cost of meals can add up.

Local Transportation

Getting around Bali involves costs, whether you’re hiring a driver, renting a scooter, or using public transportation.

Sightseeing and Activities

Entrance fees to temples, parks, and attractions, as well as the cost of activities like surfing lessons or spa treatments, need to be considered in your budget.

Detailed Planning Steps

Now, let’s explore the step-by-step guide to plan your budget trip to Bali.

Bali boasts a tropical climate, making it a year-round destination. However, to maximize savings and avoid crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons – April to June and September to October. Not only will you enjoy pleasant weather, but you’ll also find lower prices on accommodation and flights.

Look for the best deals on flights at least two to three months before your travel dates. Booking well in advance will significantly reduce your costs. Airlines like AirAsia and Malindo Air often have reasonably priced flights from major Indian cities to Denpasar, Bali’s capital.

Great news for Indian passport holders – Indonesia offers a free 30-day visa on arrival for Indian citizens. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date in Bali.

Bali offers an array of budget-friendly accommodation options, ranging from hostels to guest houses and budget hotels. Regions like Kuta, Seminyak, and Ubud are popular among tourists, providing affordable lodging options. Always compare prices on different platforms and consider booking directly through the hotel’s website as they often have exclusive discounts.

Getting Around

One of the most cost-effective and fun ways to get around Bali is by renting a scooter, which usually costs around INR 400-500 per day. Alternatively, you can also use local transport like Bemos or hire a private driver for full-day tours. Remember to negotiate prices beforehand to avoid overpaying.

Eating in Bali can be a delightful, yet budget-friendly experience. Look for local Warungs (small family-owned restaurants) that serve delicious Balinese cuisine at very affordable prices. You can enjoy a hearty meal for as low as INR 100-150. However, make sure to drink bottled water to avoid any health issues.

Activities and Sightseeing

Plan your itinerary in a way that you visit multiple attractions within the same area on the same day to save on transport costs. Admission fees for most temples and attractions in Bali are quite affordable (ranging from INR 200-500). However, if you’re a fan of water sports or plan on taking surfing lessons, be sure to negotiate for the best prices.

While shopping in Bali can be tempting, it’s essential to stick to your budget. Bali’s markets are famous for their bargaining culture, so don’t hesitate to negotiate prices for souvenirs, clothing, or handicrafts. Also, consider purchasing local SIM cards for data and communication as they are quite cheap and efficient.

Health and Safety

Travel insurance is a must. It might seem like an unnecessary expense, but it is crucial for unforeseen circumstances. Also, keep a small first-aid kit handy and follow general safety measures.

Money Saving Tips for Bali Trip

Travel during off-peak season.

Travelling during the off-peak season can significantly reduce airfare and accommodation costs.

Opt for Local Cuisine

Local food is often cheaper and gives you an authentic taste of Balinese culture.

Use Public Transport

Using public transport or renting a bike can be more economical than hiring a private cab.

All about how much cash you need to bring to Bali.

We’ll also provide a cost breakdown for food, drink, lodging, and transportation plus share a few examples of what your budget might look like depending on the type of traveler you are.

Do They Accept Credit Cards in Bali?

If you’re from the US or other first-world countries, you may be wondering if you can use your credit card. The answer is yes- most of the larger establishments in Bali accept credit cards. However, it is important to note that many will charge an extra fee of 2-3% on each transaction.

Also, unless you rent a self-drive car , hire a private driver , or have set up the Grab or Gojek ride app with a credit card you will need to budget enough cash for your transportation. And the small local warungs (restaurants) and food carts will only accept Indonesian Rupiah (cash).

How To Get Cash in Bali

There are a couple of different ways that you can get cash in Bali. First, you can bring US dollars (or other major currencies) and exchange them for the Indonesian Rupiah (the only currency used in Bali). There are plenty of currency exchange centers in Bali, especially in the high touristy areas.

You can also exchange your currency at the airport upon arrival. However, the rates seem to be a bit higher at the airport. Also, make sure that you bring nice clean crisp bills and not worn tattered bills. It does make a difference in your rate and some will only accept the fresh currency.

The second way to get some cash in Bali is to use ATMs. It is relatively safe to use ATMs in Bali. The most secure ATMs in Bali will be located in the foyer or out in front of the major banks since they usually have a security guard monitoring activity 24 hours a day. The machines will dispense 50,000 notes ($3.20 USD) or 100,000 notes ($6.40 USD). Always check the front of the ATM since this is usually stamped in plain sight.

Best atm to get cash in Bali

There is usually a $2-$3.00 fee associated with each transaction. The largest transaction amount offered is 3 million ($192.00 USD). We have found that all of the Maybank machines offer that and they dispense 100,000 notes. That’s our machine of choice.

All major US bank cards are accepted. We have used our Wells Fargo debit card as well as our favorite Charles Schwabb card-no problems. You may want to give your bank heads-up that you will be traveling to avoid any fraud freezes during your trip.

How Much Cash Should You Bring to Bali?

Now that we have determined that you can use a credit card and a debit card in Bali, let’s talk about how much money should you bring on a 10 day trip to Bali.

You will probably have all of your major expenses booked and paid for when you land in Bali. But, you will want to have some cash on hand to get you going, and just in case you have trouble finding or having technical problems with the ATMs.

Telling you how much money to take to Bali for 10 days.

I suggest for 10 days in Bali that you bring about $250-$500 USD cash per person. This will be more than enough to cover your day-to-day cash expenses on a small to medium budget.

Now let’s talk about some of the costs that you can expect on your Bali trip.

Is Bali Expensive for Food and Drink?

For food and drink, Bali can be a bit on the expensive side when compared to other Southeast Asian countries like Thailand or Vietnam. However, if you are savvy about where you eat and what you order, you can definitely find some affordable eats.

Let’s take a closer look at the cost of food and drink in Bali…

  • Meal at a Local Warung- $2-$3 USD
  • Meal at a Mid-Range Restaurant- $5-$10 USD
  • Meal at an Expensive Restaurant- $20+ USD
  • Beer at a Bar or Club- $3-$5 USD
  • Cocktail at a Bar or Club- $5-$8

Transportation Costs in Bali

Getting around Bali can be a bit tricky, especially if you’re not used to the tropical climate and the chaotic traffic. But with a little bit of planning and some knowledge about the different transportation options, you’ll be able to get around easily and cheaply.

There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to transportation in Bali:

  • The main form of transportation is motorbikes. You can rent them pretty much anywhere, but make sure you know how to ride one before you go! The cost per day is about $2.50-$5.00 USD per day.
  • Taxis are available, but they can be expensive compared to other forms of transportation. Most taxi rides depending on how far you are going will run you about $7.00 – $10.00 each.
  • An alternative to taxi service is using Grab or Gojek ride-sharing app. This is the Uber service in Bali and the cost is generally a little less than the taxis but more flexible and easier to communicate your destination. You can also use both of these services for motorbike rides too which will run you $1.00 – $3.00 USD for most rides. *recommend setting this app up with a payment option before arriving in Bali.
  • You can rent a self-drive car if you are comfortable driving yourself. The average daily cost of a car rental in Bali will be about $20.00 – $45.00 USD.
  • Another popular option is to rent a car with a driver. This is a great option, especially for longer-day trips or half-day trips. Depending on time and distance, you can expect to pay $35 to $50.00 USD.

So what’s the best way to get around Bali? It really depends on your budget and your comfort level. If you’re comfortable riding a motorbike, then that’s definitely the cheapest option. If you want something a little more luxurious, then taxis, Grab or private drivers are your best bet. And if you want extra freedom and flexibility rent a self-drive car.

Lodging Costs in Bali

There are a variety of different types of lodging options in Bali, from hostels and guesthouses to resorts and villas. And while the most expensive places to stay can definitely break the bank, there are plenty of affordable options as well.

So what’s the best way to find affordable lodging in Bali? Let’s take a look…

  • Hostels- Hostels are a great option for solo travelers or groups of friends traveling on a budget. The average cost of a bed in a hostel dorm room is $5-$10 USD per night. Book cheap hostels here
  • Guesthouses- Guesthouses are similar to hostels but usually offer private rooms as well as dorm rooms. The average cost of a private room in a guesthouse is $10-$20 USD per night.
  • Resorts- Resorts are the most expensive type of lodging in Bali, but you can often find deals and discounts if you book in advance. The average cost of a resort room is $50-$100 USD per night.
  • Villas- Villas are a great option for groups or families traveling together. You can often find villas with private pools and kitchens, which can save you a lot of money on food and activities. The average cost of a villa is $100-$200 USD per night.

Tour Costs in Bali

Bali is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world for a reason. The beaches are beautiful, the culture is rich, and the prices are right. And when it comes to tours, there are plenty of options to choose from.

This full-day Instagram photo tour is the perfect sampler platter for a Bali vacation.

Bali offers something for everyone, whether you’re looking for an adventure or a more relaxed experience. There are outdoor activities like hiking and biking, as well as cultural experiences like learning about traditional dance or cooking methods. And of course, there are also plenty of opportunities for shopping and sightseeing.

Most tours will run you about $10.00 – $25.00 per person depending on the activity.

No matter what type of tour you’re interested in, you can find something that fits your budget. In general, the cheapest tours are those that include transportation and admission fees but don’t include any meals or accommodations. If you want a more all-inclusive experience, however, expect to pay a bit more.

The bottom line is that Bali is an affordable destination with something for everyone.

How much money do you need in Bali per day?

One of the great things about Bali is that it’s very affordable; you can get by on a relatively small budget.

However, depending on what you want to do during your stay, you may need a bit more money than usual. For example, if you want to go out clubbing or eat at some of the finer restaurants, you’ll probably need to budget around 200-400 thousand rupiah per day (which is roughly equivalent to $13-25 USD).

If you’re just looking to relax on the beach and enjoy the local food and culture, you can get by on much less. In fact, many people can comfortably live on 150 thousand rupiah ($10) per day.

Wrapping Up: How Much Money Do I Need to Take to Bali for 10 Days?

So, how much money do you need to take to Bali for 10 days? The answer really depends on what your budget is. If you have a smaller budget then you can easily get by with about $10 per day-if you just plan on hanging at the beach and eating local food. If you’re looking to eat at the higher-end restaurants explore the island and enjoy all of its many attractions, then you’ll need a bit more, like $25 to $50 per day.

No matter what your plans are, however, it’s always a good idea to have a little extra cash in case something comes up. And remember, Bali is an incredibly affordable destination, so you don’t have to worry about breaking the bank. Have fun and enjoy your stay!

All You Need To Know For Planning A Budget-Friendly Indonesia Trip

Planning A Budget-Friendly Indonesia Trip

Indonesia offers many enchanting wonders , from the lush jungles of Bali to the vibrant streets of Jakarta. If getting good value for your money when travelling abroad is an important factor, Indonesia is one of the most attractive options . At the time of writing, INR 1 equals IDR 193, meaning Indians can enjoy more spending power in Indonesia.

According to Numbeo, a cost of living database that collects data from around the world, a three-course meal for two in a mid-range restaurant in Indonesia would cost around INR 1,298. In addition, a bottle of local beer at a bar would be around INR 150 to 200, and a regular cappuccino would cost you about INR 160. Here's a look at all you need to know before visiting Indonesia.

Top Attractions

Explore ancient temples in Prambanan and the world's biggest Buddhist sanctuary, Borobudur. Witness rare coral species in the Raja Ampat Islands and incredible marine life in the Nusa Islands. Hike through rainforests and rice paddy fields in Ubud and admire Dutch colonial architecture in Belitung. And it's all very pocket friendly. At the Bali Safari and Marine Park, encounter about 400 wildlife species and enjoy the adventure for around INR 4,000. Embark on a night trek to Mount Batur, an active volcano, for an unforgettable sunrise experience for around INR 2,000. Book a whitewater rafting trip on the Ayung River in Ubud for an exhilarating adventure for around INR 3,500.

The tourist visa is valid for a period of 90 days, and you can stay in the country for a maximum of 60 days. As an Indian citizen, you can obtain an e-visa or Visa on Arrival (VoA). Indian citizens are eligible for a 30-day visa on arrival, which can be extended for an additional 30 days. The fee for the visa is INR 2,601.

The designated currency in Indonesia is the rupiah. As per the current present exchange rates, INR 1 equals IDR 193. While debit and credit cards are common, carry cash to avoid foreign exchange markups.

Several low-cost carriers connect major Indian cities to Jakarta and Denpasar. A round-trip fare typically amounts to INR 40,000 or less, even during the peak season, especially if booked a month in advance.

Accommodation

Indonesia has a variety of accommodations to fit different budgets, including luxury resorts, budget-friendly hostels, homestays, and couchsurfing options. You can share a dorm in a hostel for as little as INR 473, or you can opt for a private room that will cost you approximately INR 2,000 per night. If travelling in bigger groups, Airbnb offers the most value for price, as several come with plunge pools and great views.

Local Travel

Travelling in Indonesia is both easy and convenient. Traditional modes of transport include becaks and bemos. Becaks are a combination of a bicycle and rickshaw that can carry up to two people, while bemos are small buses that can accommodate up to ten people. The rates for these modes of transport are usually fixed and affordable. If you're looking to explore Sumatra or Java islands, trains are a great way to do so since they are as quick as buses but cheaper and more comfortable. If you want to travel from one island to another, boats are the best option. You can board a ferry or a speedboat, depending on the route.

Indians can enjoy more spending power while dining out in Indonesia. A meal for two at a mid-range restaurant would cost approximately INR 780 and can go up to INR 2,000. Eating at warungs or small kiosks/streetside stalls is a great way to save money on food, as a plate would typically cost INR 150.

Pick up high-quality coffee, especially the native kopi luwak variant, costing INR 300 per packet. The country is also renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship. The Batik fabrics start from around INR 800 per metre. Visit the village of Tegallalang, a short drive north of Ubud central, for intricately stylised Balinese wooden carvings of the Garuda, costing around INR 800. Also, buy local spices like Balinese vanilla and sea salts.

Best Time To Visit

For the western and central Indonesian islands (such as Bali, Java, the Gilis, Lombok, and Komodo), the best time to visit is during the dry season, which spans from May to September. The wet season is between October and April, with rainfall occurring in short, heavy bursts. On the other hand, the eastern islands, such as Sulawesi, West Papua, Raja Ampat, and the Moluccas Islands, have different peak seasons, mostly between March and May and again in October.

how much a bali trip cost from india

I spent 3 nights in Asia's least visited country. It also turned out to be the most expensive.

  • Marielle Descalsota has spent over $30,000 on travel in the last two years.
  • Timor-Leste is one of the most expensive countries she's traveled to.

I graduated from college two years ago and set a goal for myself to visit at least 50 countries before I turn 30.

Even while maintaining a full-time job throughout most of my travels, I've already managed to tick 20 off the list. I've traveled to six countries in Europe and 14 across Asia .

I spent about a quarter of my salary over the past two years on travel expenses, which have added up to over $30,000. I've managed to stay on a tight budget even in upscale destinations like the Maldives — where I spent less than $1,000 on a five-day trip — and backpacked on a few dollars a day in cities like Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur .

But on a recent trip to Timor-Leste in May — a country in the South Pacific smaller in size than the state of Connecticut — I found budgeting more difficult than ever. The country comprises half of Timor Island — which it shares with Indonesia — and is known for its unspoiled waters and vibrant coral reefs.

It's one of the world's least-visited countries , making airfare and hotel rates more expensive than many countries in Asia.

Timor-Leste is on the United Nations' list of the world's least-developed countries . It's also one of the more expensive countries in the region, due to high trade costs, according to Development Asia . In addition to the centavo, which is only minted in coins, the country uses the US dollar , too — a stronger currency than what's used in nearby countries, including Indonesia and Australia.

Here's a breakdown of what I spent in Timor-Leste.

Cost of return plane tickets from Bali to Dili: $500

Getting to Timor-Leste isn't easy. When I was traveling, Bali, Indonesia, and Darwin, Australia, were the only cities with flights to Dili, the capital, where the country's only international airport is located. Only two airlines — the Indonesian low-cost carrier Citilink and the local airline Aero Dili — fly between Bali and Dili. The flight from Bali is less than two hours long — while there are no direct flights from the US to Bali, stopovers through bigger airports like Singapore and Tokyo are often used.

I booked a return ticket with Citilink about three weeks before departure for $500 — which was around $100 cheaper than Aero Dili. This included a front-row seat reservation and a 44-lb checked bag allowance.

Cost of hotel stay for three nights: $500

Timor-Leste only has a handful of three-star hotels and no luxury accommodations. While Hilton plans to open a hotel in Dili's business district later this year, there were no international hotel chains when I visited.

Many travelers stay in guesthouses by the beach, which only have basic amenities such as fans and mosquito nets. I booked an entry-level room for three nights at Timor Plaza Hotel & Apartments for around $500, including tax.

While the room itself was basic — and had its fair share of critters — the hotel had a stunning view of Atauro, one of Timor Leste's two offshore islands. It was also located above a small mall, which made eating out easy.

Cost of transportation: $90

Ride-hailing services weren't available in Timor-Leste, and taxi services are limited to the city center. I was quoted $20 per hour to rent a car, and I wasn't willing to pay $200 for a day.

Fortunately, I met a local guide who charged $30 per day to tour me around Dili on a scooter. I found it an inexpensive and efficient way to travel from the gorgeous white-sand beaches to the beautiful tropical mountains.

Cost of food: $180

Food in Dili is surprisingly international. Despite only a handful of international food chains — including Burger King and Gloria Jean's Coffee — operating in Timor Leste, Western food like burgers are ubiquitous. I ate mostly local Timorese food and Indonesian fare.

I had set a daily budget of around $60 for meals, drinks, and snacks for my guide and me. While a plate of nasi goreng — Indonesian fried rice — costs around $3 to $4 in Bali, I paid around $15 for the dish in Dili. At a local café, I paid $8 for a small plate of jackfruit, carrots, lettuce, and tortillas.

Miscellaneous costs: $415

Before my trip, I spent $15 on an eSIM and $20 on travel insurance . When I arrived in Timor-Leste, I had to pay $30 for the visa-on-arrival, which allowed me to stay in the country for 30 days.

Souvenirs in Timor-Leste are expensive. I purchased a small handmade bag and sarong from the local Tais market — a type of weave indigenous to the country — for around $70. I snagged a handmade belt at another shop for $30. I bought several bags of Timorese coffee — the country's second-biggest export — for $50.

I didn't expect to find Western makeup products in Timor-Leste, so I bought a few items when I did find them at a local grocery for $70, although at a substantial markup compared to what they cost on retailers like Amazon .

I didn't spend much on sightseeing as most of my time was spent swimming at the beach and exploring the tropical mountains. For activities, I spent $30 on a massage at a traditional Chinese spa and $50 on a half-day scuba diving trip at the coast. I budgeted about $50 for tips.

While traveling to Timor-Leste was expensive, the stunning views were worth it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

As a frugal college student, I stretched my dollar in budget-friendly backpacker hot spots like India, Mexico, and Bali, where the dollar has traditionally had strong buying power. While those destinations are still affordable for many American travelers, that list has grown. This year the dollar has surged against many foreign currencies, including the South African rand and Japanese yen.

The bottom line: 2024 is the best year in quite some time to consider international travel, especially as prices in the U.S. have been on a steady rise since the pandemic waned. Although domestic airfare and hotel prices are slightly lower than last year (according to NerdWallet ’s June 2024 travel-inflation report), restaurant meals in this country are up nearly 30 percent compared to May 2019, and movie, theater, and concert tickets have bumped up 3.4 percent year over year. The Telegraph even recently published a story titled “ How America Became the World’s Costliest Holiday Destination .”

Airfares to Asia, Canada, and Africa are higher than last year, according to travel site Hopper , but you can still find deals by booking three to five months ahead or flying with low-cost carriers. Once you’re on the ground, the dollar goes far. When I visited Cape Town, South Africa, in May, I never paid more than $8 for an Uber ride across the city, and a wood-fired pizza and glass of local Pinotage cost less than $10 at the cool enoteca Openwine .

When I traveled to Japan last fall, lunch never cost more than $5. My go-to order: cheap onigiri (Japanese rice balls filled with pickled plums or spicy cod roe) and a bottle of Kirin Ichiban beer.

Here are some of my favorite countries where a weaker currency against the dollar will give you serious bang for your buck.

The snow-covered peak of Fitz Roy at sunrise in Argentina's Parque Nacional los Glaciares

Soaring inflation in the country hasn’t helped citizens, but it has made Argentina one of the best bargains for American travelers in recent years. On a recent trip to the Patagonian hiking mecca of El Chaltén, a friend and I split a hearty steak dinner and bottle of Malbec at La Tapera for less than $25. Senderos Hostería (from $130) is a homey wooden chalet in the center of town with friendly staff, views of the iconic Fitz Roy, and a delicious complimentary breakfast buffet. Chaltén Mountain Guides runs instructional climbing and mountaineering clinics and also leads one-to-six-day treks in Los Glaciares National Park (from $300).

Northern Argentina’s Ibera wetlands are one of the world’s best wildlife-watching destinations. It supports everything from the capybara and jacana (on its back) to more than 300 species of birds.

If climbing isn’t your thing, head northeast to the wetlands of Iberá National Park. A partnership between Tompkins Conservation and the NGO Rewilding Argentina have brought back several species, including the jaguar, ocelot, giant otter, tapir, and giant anteater. El Transito hotel (from $368, including all meals) is located within the park and staff can help arrange adventures such as horseback rides and kayak excursions.

After the conference, I explored Yakushima, a Unesco-listed subtropical island off the southern coast of Japan’s southernmost main island, Kyushu. Another local outfitter, Yakushima Experience , leads guided treks to places like Kuromidake, an alpine part of the island that delivers 360-degree views (from $80). The owner also operates a guesthouse (from $174) just 12 miles east of Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen, a sulfur-rich hot spring carved into the rock on the southern shore ($1, paid on an honor system). When it comes to wilderness bragging rights, Canada is hard to beat. America’s northern neighbor has it all, from temperate coastal rainforest to 14,000-foot peaks to gorgeous national parks . One word of advice: even with the stronger U.S. dollar, Canadian gas prices range from 25 to 50 percent higher than the American average, so perhaps skip the road trip and consider a trip to the Shearwater Resort , an eco-retreat in the Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia.

Owned by the Heiltsuk Nation, this 63-acre Denny Island property can be reached by ferry from Port Hardy ($84 round trip) or Bella Coola ($53 round trip) and offers accommodations suited to all budgets, from campsites ($15) to cozy lodge rooms with oceanfront balconies ($335). The draw: incredible salmon fishing, intimate cultural tours, extraordinary wildlife viewing—notably grizzly and black bears, as well as the rare white spirit bear and humpback whales and orcas—plus kayak and SUP activities.

Rent kayaks or paddleboards (from $25 for four hours) to explore the bird-filled wetlands. The park also offers 50 riverside tent campsites (from $25).

South Africa offers much more than safaris. Cape Town, on the southwest coast, is the ultimate urban adventure base—it reminds me of an affordable San Francisco, with a combination of gorgeous beaches, awesome hiking trails, and wine lands less than 30 minutes away.

In 2019, United Airlines launched North America’s only nonstop flight to Cape Town via Newark, New Jersey. A recent search showed round-trip flights in September for $1,320, which is less than I paid to fly to any city in Europe this summer from the U.S.

Colorful changing houses line South Africa’s Muizenberg Beach, near Cape Town, while kitesurfers play in the surf.

The strong dollar goes a long way here. I love staying at the ten-room Noah House , located close to the trails of unforgettable Table Mountain and the buzzy bars and restaurants of Kloof Street. Rooms go for around $165 and include a lovely breakfast. A slightly more affordable sister property, Âmé, will debut nearby in October. Outfitter Escape and Explore can arrange adventures like snorkeling in a kelp forest or surfing at Muizenberg Beach.

The Garden Route , a 124-mile ocean-hugging highway on the Western Cape, boasts some of the best land-based whale-watching on the planet, a season that generally runs from June to December. Accommodations within De Hoop Nature Reserve (from $94) offer easy access to hiking and biking trails along the shore and opportunities to spot ostrich and Cape Mountain zebra from your doorstep.

A woman rides her mountain bike on a trail along a massively steep hillside in central Romania near Mount Omu.

While many European countries have been battling overtourism, Romania remains largely off the radar of travelers. When I visited in June, I was warmly welcomed by locals, trekked empty trails, and easily booked reservations at popular restaurants with wildly affordable prices. At Soro Lume , one of the top tables in the capital city of Bucharest, a glass of great wine cost just $6, and the most expensive entrée on the menu was $16.

An aerial view of Mesendorf, a traditional saxon village in Transylvania, Romania, with a fortified church at its center.

Ringed by the Carpathian Mountains, the forested region of Transylvania is a hiking and biking gem, with 64 miles of mountain-bike trails linking eight Saxon villages. Base yourself in Viscri at the seven-room Bike Check Inn (from $65). The owner was involved in building the trail network and rents bikes (from $20) and e-bikes (from $32) and also offers guided bike trips. Mesendorf Gasthaus , in the central-Romanian village of Mesendorf, is also conveniently located near the bike trail as well as fantastic hiking trails rich with birds like goshawks and hawfinches. (from $86). Take advantage now. Romania’s government is looking to adopt the euro by 2026.

A woman sits on a blanket overlooking the Babinda boulders swimming pools near Cairns, Queensland.

New flight routes are often promoted with deals, so look to score savings when American Airlines introduces new service  from Dallas to Brisbane on October 27 and Delta launches a seasonal route from L.A. to Brisbane on December 4.

The capital city of Queensland, in the country’s northeast, is the perfect jumping-off point to explore the wave-blessed beaches of the Gold Coast, just 40 miles south. Or head to Byron Bay, one of my all-time favorite beach towns, located around 100 miles south. In Byron, check in at the Sunseeker , a revamped motel on the edge of town with 12 rooms, lo-fi vibes, and a kitschy tiki bar (from $180), or hunker down at Sun Ranch , a regenerative farm set on 55 acres in the hinterland, with trails for horseback riding, a pool and badminton club, and a wellness area equipped with a wood-fired sauna and a cold plunge (from $370).

A girl pops up on her surfboard off the shores of Melbourne, Australia, while her teacher does a cheer from behind the wave.

Adventure options range from tandem hang gliding over the Cape Byron Nature Reserve (from $107 for 30 minutes) to paddling to famed surf breaks like Tallow Beach and the Pass. Soul Surf School rents boards (from $18 for two hours) and runs half-day group lessons ($53). Head inland to explore the waterfalls and glow-worm caves within World Heritage–listed Nightcap National Park.

In town, caffeinate with a perfectly poured flat white from Bayleaf Café and carbo-load at Masa Byron Bay , known for its addictive sourdough pizza, doughnuts, and creative croissant flavors, like peanut butter chocolate.

The red-roofed homes and cathedral in the historic Alfama district of Lisbon, Portugal.

True, the euro has a slight edge on the dollar, but if you’re like me and can’t resist the pull of Western Europe, consider Portugal as a less expensive option to the rest of the Continent. Surf-swept beaches, scenic trail networks like the Rota Vicentina  (Fishermen’s Trail)—check out the video and Gaia GPS map, below— and cycling routes that meander along the dramatic coast and through wine country have put this country on the radar of active travelers who don’t want to spend a fortune.

Portugal feels like a bargain in comparison to Spain, France, or Italy. Its rail system, Comboios de Portugal , conveniently connects the northern and southern regions (a round-trip ticket ffrom Lisbon to Porto cost me $47 last fall), and when I rented a car for ten days last June, it cost half of what I paid to rent a car for a long weekend in Maine this summer.

My recent trip was a surf mission on Portugal’s Silver Coast, and Noah Surf House was a dream stay. Perched above the beach in the sleepy town of Santa Cruz, the family-friendly, sustainable hotel has an in-house surf school, a skate park, trampolines, a gym, sea-to-table food, and a variety of accommodations ranging from sea-view bungalows (from $200) to eight-person bunkhouses (from $60 per person).

After a long morning of surfing, I’d retreat to Plaj , just below the hotel, where the catch of the day, paired with potatoes and fresh vegetables, cost around $15 and was enough to share with a friend. The surf picks up in autumn, right when the price of flights to Europe typically start to fall, so go for it.

The author stops her bike ride in Romania to pose in front of a house where a muster of storks has constructed a large nest atop a building.

Jen Murphy makes her friends ski across the border from Switzerland to Italy to score a more affordable (and equally delicious) lunch on her annual European ski trip.

How to Find the Best Travel Insurance

What travel insurance covers

How much does travel insurance cost, types of travel insurance, how to get travel insurance, what to look for in travel insurance, best travel insurance comparison sites, which insurance company is best for travel insurance, when to skip travel insurance, travel insurance, recapped.

Travel insurance can cover medical expenses, emergencies, trip interruptions, baggage, rental cars and more.

Cost is affected by trip length, pre-existing medical conditions, depth of coverage, your age and add-ons.

You can get it through credit cards or third-party companies, & can shop on travel insurance comparison sites.

Before buying, evaluate risks, know existing coverage, obtain quotes online and review policy details warily.

Skip it if you buy flexible airfare and hotels, already have coverage or only book refundable activities.

Booking travel always carries some degree of uncertainty. Travel insurance provides a safety net so you can step out with confidence. You may not need travel insurance for inexpensive trips, but it can provide a sense of security when you prepay for pricey reservations, a big international trip or travel during cold and flu season, which can be unpredictable.

According to insurance comparison site Squaremouth, travelers in 2023 spent an average of $403 for comprehensive coverage, compared to $96 for medical-only policies. Comprehensive plans typically cost between 5% and 10% of the insured trip cost.

Since that price tag is no small amount, it helps to know how to shop smart for travel insurance. Here's how to find the right travel insurance plan for you and your next adventure.

Depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for, the chart below will help you determine what to look for when selecting a policy:

Depending on the policy, travel insurance reimburses you or offers services when something goes awry. There’s even coverage for the worst-case scenario: if you die in an accident while traveling. Accidental death coverage pays your beneficiary a lump sum in that case.

Before you buy, take a little time to get familiar with different types of travel insurance products, how it’s priced, and what it covers and excludes. If you’re traveling during these uncertain times, you’ll want to make sure that the policy you select covers coronavirus-related emergencies. Usually, the more thorough the coverage, the more it will cost.

Travel insurance costs vary depending on:

Length and cost of the trip: The longer and more expensive the trip, the higher the policy cost.

Cost of local health care: High health-care costs in your destination can drive up the price of trip insurance.

Medical conditions you want covered: Conditions you already have will increase the cost of travel insurance coverage.

Amount and breadth of coverage: The more risks a policy covers, the more it will cost.

Your age: Generally the older you are, the higher the price.

Any optional supplement you add to your policy : Cancel For Any Reason , Interrupt For Any Reason and more.

Keep these factors in mind when considering different travel insurance options.

You’ll find a wide selection of travel protection plans when you shop for a policy.

Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package, known as a comprehensive plan, which includes a variety of coverage.

Here are seven of the most common types of travel insurance:

Travel medical insurance

These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.

International travel insurance

Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:

Your own illness.

The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.

Natural disasters.

Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.

Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).

Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.

Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.

Some insurers and comparison sites let you customize a policy by choosing types of coverage a la carte. For example, TravelInsurance.com is a comparison site that provides quotes from different providers.

Baggage and personal belongings

How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.

Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation

This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.

» Learn more: Can I get travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions?

24-hour assistance

This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.

Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.

Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Many services also offer information before the trip, such as required vaccinations. The only way to know what’s included is to read the policy.

» Learn more: Should you insure your cruise?

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.

This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. You may also already have accidental death and dismemberment insurance through work, so it's best to check your policies to ensure you’re not overpaying.

Rental car coverage

Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.

Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.

Car insurance requirements are complex because they vary among countries. You can usually purchase liability insurance from the rental car company. Learn about car insurance requirements by searching for auto insurance by country on the U.S. Embassy website .

A note about single vs. long-term policies

Single trip insurance plans are a great option for those going on a single trip for a specific length of time (e.g., a two-week vacation) and then returning home. The price of the policy is usually determined by the cost of the trip.

Long-term travel policies cover you for multiple trips, but there are limitations to how long you can be away from home, if you can return home during your travels and how many trips you can take. In addition, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is either not offered or capped at a dollar amount that can be significantly below the total cost of all the trips taken during the covered period.

Long-term travel insurance plans — often called 'multi-trip' or 'annual travel insurance' — are a suitable option for those who travel often and are satisfied with the amount of trip cancellation coverage for all the trips they take over the duration of the policy.

» Learn more: How annual (multi-trip) travel insurance works

Below, we include how to obtain travel insurance, along with the pros and cons of each option.

Some credit cards offer trip cancellation and rental car insurance if you use the card to book the trip or car.

When you book a trip with your credit card, depending on the card you use, you may already receive trip cancellation and interruption coverage.

Keep these tips in mind when you’re considering a trip insurance policy.

Evaluate the financial risks you face when traveling. Can you bear those costs yourself, or do you want insurance?

Examine what coverage you already have: Does your credit card offer travel insurance? Do you have renters or homeowners insurance to cover belongings? What is the deductible? Will your health plan cover you in all the locations where you travel?

Get quotes for trip insurance online. Choose a package of the benefits you need and compare prices for similar coverage among carriers.

Narrow your choices and then read the policy fine print to understand what’s covered, what’s excluded and the limits on coverage. You may find that the lowest-priced policy is too restrictive and that paying a little more gets you the coverage you need. Or you might find that the cheapest, most basic policy fits the bill.

There are a few scenarios when spending extra on travel insurance doesn't really make sense, like:

You booked flexible airline tickets.

Your hotel room has a good cancellation policy.

It's already included in your credit card.

You haven't booked any nonrefundable activities.

» Learn more: When you don't need travel insurance

Yes, especially for nonrefundable trips and travel during the COVID-era. Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or have travel insurance from your credit card, you shouldn't travel without having some sort of travel protection in place to safeguard you and your trip. Travel insurance can protect you in case of an unexpected emergency such as a canceled flight due to weather, a medical event that requires hospitalization, lost luggage and more.

There are many good travel insurance policies out there and a policy that may be great for you may not be good for someone else. Selecting the best plan depends on what coverage you would like and your trip details.

For example, World Nomads offers a comprehensive travel insurance policy that has excellent coverage for adventure sports. Allianz provides coverage for trips of varying lengths of time through its single trip plans and multi-trip plans. Some providers offer add-on options like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance. If you’re not sure which plan to go with, consider looking at trip insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth or Insuremytrip.

Yes, you can. However, it's better to purchase it sooner rather than later, ideally right after booking your trip because the benefits begin as soon as you purchase a policy.

Let’s say you’re going on a trip in a month and a week before departure, you fall and break your leg. If you’ve purchased a travel insurance policy, you can use your trip cancellation benefits to get your nonrefundable deposit back.

Most comprehensive travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and dental, medical evacuation, trip delay and lost luggage coverage. Many plans offer COVID coverage, but you’ll always want to check to ensure that the policy you choose provides that benefit if you’re traveling during these times. Some plans may also allow you to add features like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance.

It depends which credit card you have. Premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer travel insurance benefits if you book a trip using your card or points.

However, the coverage provided by the credit cards is usually lower than if you purchased a standalone policy. Review the travel insurance benefits on your credit card and check that the limits are adequate before foregoing from purchasing a separate plan.

Unpredictability is one of the mind-opening joys of travel, but travel insurance should contain no surprises. The time you spend to understand your options will be well worth the peace of mind as you embark on your next adventure.

Whether you’re seeking a single or a long-term policy, each travel insurance option offers different strengths and weaknesses. Choosing the right policy depends on your trip needs, your budget and how important various benefits are to you.
