How to use AI to plan your next holiday

  • facebook-f-brands (1)
  • twitter-brands (1)
  • linkedin-in-brands
  • envelope-solid

Not everyone has the time to map out every detail of a trip on an excel spreadsheet. Here’s how you can use AI travel planners to simplify your holiday planning.

If you haven’t heard, robots are taking over the world. Well, somewhat. In any case, they’ve certainly made their way into the travel industry. Gone are the days of needing to spend hours scouring the internet to curate your ideal travel itinerary. With artificial intelligence well and truly on the rise, holiday planning might be speedier than ever – if you know how to use the right tools. For those pressed for time, in need of some personalised holiday inspiration or looking for budgeting advice, AI-powered software can make holiday planning less overwhelming. Keep reading to discover the best AI travel planner tools, tips and tricks for your next getaway.

Cinque Terre, Italy at sunset

Should I use AI to plan my next holiday?

There are many benefits of using AI to help plan a vacation. Artificial intelligence can save you a lot of time when it comes to researching destinations and accomodation options. As it is free, it is also more affordable than using professional travel planning services. Using AI to plan a trip can be great for novice trip planners who aren’t sure where to start when it comes to organising a vacation, which, given all the possible variables, can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, as AI technology isn’t always completely reliable, it’s best not to depend solely on AI tools to plan your travel. Doing your own research and getting help from a travel agent can still be very beneficial.

What are the limits of using AI to plan a vacation?

As helpful as AI tools can be for planning a holiday, it’s important to remember that AI can make mistakes. Since it obtains its data from a wide range of internet sources, AI travel planners are generally more reliable when it comes to better-known destinations or accommodation. If there isn’t much publicly available information on the destination you are researching, tools such as ChatGPT may not entirely trustworthy or could even make up information. It’s best to always double check the facts before booking anything.

What are the best ways to use AI for travel planning?

AI travel planner tools are most useful for initial idea generation and trip scaffolding. Start by entering your questions and criteria for your ideal trip. Once you have narrowed down your holiday options, it’s worth spending a little bit of time doing your own research to make sure that the information provided by AI is up to date, accurate and relevant for your interests. Similarly, if you are using AI to curate an itinerary, use the outcome as a starting point and adjust it to your needs after checking the information.

The best AI travel planner tools

Gemini , how can you help me plan my holiday? Ask the chatbot this question yourself, and you’ll receive a seemingly endless list of possibilities: destination recommendations, itinerary curations, hotel suggestions, budgeting, idea generation and language translation, to name a few. Besides booking your holiday, there’s little this virtual assisant can’t do. Get creative and start shooting your questions. Here are a few ideas:

  • What are the best things to do in California for two adults?
  • Can you create a four-day travel itinerary for Melbourne in July, including transport from the airport?
  • What are the most underrated snorkelling destinations within or close to Australia?
  • How much should I budget for a week-long holiday in the Gold Coast for a family of five?

The benefit of using Gemini over a Google search is that the results can be much more personalised, made to fit your individual needs and preferences. On top of this, the software does a lot of the legwork of research for you, pulling and synthesising information from all corners of the web so you don’t have to. Many travel apps and websites, including Roam Around, now offer an AI travel planner feature backed by similar technology to Gemini and ChatGPT .

Person using AI on laptop

Travel platform Expedia offers an in-app ChatGPT functionality to help their users with trip planning. By starting an open-ended conversation in the app, members can receive recommendations on where to stay, where to go, transport, experiences and attractions, as well as personalised trip options based on variables such as hotel location, date ranges, price and room type. The AI travel planner software also automatically saves hotels that were discussed during the conversation in the app.

Busy street at night in Tokyo Japan

Tripadvisor

Tripadvisor is another travel company harnessing the power of AI to improve the user experience. Using the Trip Builder function on their website, you can enter where you’d like to go, what kinds of attractions or holiday type you are interested in, potential dates and who you are travelling with. Within seconds, the AI travel planner will propose a detailed itinerary that includes the prices and reviews of all the suggested experiences, restaurants and accommodation, as well as their locations on a map.

AI travel tip: TripAdvisor’s Trip Builder doesn’t take preferences such as dietary restrictions, transport and accessibility into account, so you’ll need to research these yourself.

Ask and you shall receive. Travel search engine Kayak has a ChatGPT plugin that allows you to cut down travel planning time. Type anything from ‘Where can I fly from Brisbane for under $600 in March?’ to ‘Find me a double-bed hotel room in Paris that is wheelchair accessible, is within 15km of the Eiffel Tower and has breakfast included’. In the Kayak app, you can also receive travel information on voice demand if you have an Amazon Alexa-enabled device.

Holiday planning

Booking.com

From narrowing down your list of beachside bungalows and generating city itineraries to offering ski town inspiration, Booking.com ’s AI Trip Planner takes the legwork out of organising a holiday. The chat-based functionality can be used directly in the company’s mobile app.

Roam Around

Just ask Layla by Roam Around is a ChatGPT-esque website made exclusively to meet your travel needs. Layla, your personal AI travel planner, can help you with anything from organising custom day trips to finding cheap flights and curating personal bucket lists. She’s also quite funny, in case you’re in need of some pre-vacation amusement.

Marriott uses Aloft’s ChatBotlr to offer Marriott Rewards chatbots on Facebook Messenger, Slack, WeChat and Google Assistant. Using the AI messenger, hotel guests can make basic service requests from their own smartphone and receive instant responses. No need to dial reception!

Family having fun outdoors on Mykonos streets

TripGenie is an AI travel assistant integrated into the Trip.com mobile app. Responding to text and voice commands, the AI travel planner can assist with planning and booking trips with comprehensive travel advice and plans, as well as a consolidated reservation service.

Tips for using AI travel planners

Be specific.

The more specific the criteria you feed an AI travel planner, the more helpful the result will generally be. Give details, and lots of them!

Use correct language

Because AI systems like ChatGPT are based on large language models, using proper grammar can go a long way. The software will be able to understand and respond to your requests more effectively if it recognises your language choices.

Fact check the information

AI is hyper intelligent, but it’s not perfect. While AI travel planner tools can be great starting points and idea generators, it’s best to check any information you are relying on for your holiday through a reputable source. They can come close, but AI assistants are also not substitutes for travel agents. They can’t book flights or accommodation and don’t ‘know’ things in the same way that humans do; they merely recognise patterns across data sources.

Destination.ai Homepage

Regarding the travel industry, this is the artificial intelligence you want at your disposal. It isn’t just a travel assistant — it is a total vacation planner that uses customer preferences and data analysis to generate an AI-designed holiday trip.

2. ViaTravelers Authentic AI Travel Planner

ViaTravelers Logo

As travelers increasingly look for smarter ways to plan their trips, the  ViaTravelers Travel Itinerary Generator emerges as a notable tool in AI-driven travel planning. This platform utilizes artificial intelligence to craft personalized itineraries, simplifying the travel planning process for its users. If you are GPT Plus member, they also have a custom GPT called ViaTravelers – Ultimate Travel Planner , so you plan your travel on the go.

The AI at ViaTravelers stands out for its ability to select flights and  hotels , among other travel necessities, aligning with a traveler’s preferences and budget. Rather than sifting through myriad options on sites like Kayak or  Expedia , this itinerary generator offers a more targeted approach:

  • Preferences Tailoring : Users input what’s important for their trip, such as destinations, budget, and themes.
  • AI Automation : The AI analyzes preferences against vast data to suggest the most suitable travel plans.
  • Personalization : Each itinerary is uniquely generated, tapping into user-specific desires and needs.

ViaTravelers adopts an API similar to that of innovative travel planners, yet it emphasizes authenticity by drawing upon its travel experiences to inform suggestions. This positions the tool as a hybrid between a search engine and a personal travel advisor.

The service also acknowledges the role of AI trip planner tools in streamlining travel planning. By leveraging ChatGPT-like capabilities, it manages to curate personalized travel itineraries seamlessly. Despite these advanced features, ViaTravelers remains impartial, earning commissions on purchases or bookings made through the platform, as is common in the industry. This generator is part of the future of automated travel planning, combining user input with intelligent algorithms for an optimized travel planning experience.

3. Best Tool for Cheap Flight and Hotel Alerts — Mighty Travels

Mighty Travels Premium

Mighty Travels Premium is a travel platform that provides travelers with a vast array of services designed to enhance the travel experience. It offers an interactive interface providing up-to-date information on flight deals, hotel discounts, and rewards programs.

Mighty Travels Premium can be an invaluable tool for frequent travelers looking to optimize their fare costs and mileage usage. Occasional travelers who prefer a more straightforward booking process may not utilize its full benefits.

  • Comprehensive Information: It provides users with extensive flight data, including prices, destinations, airlines, and potential use of miles.
  • Updated Deals: Regularly updated fare deals allow users to find the best price for their desired destination.
  • Travel Using Miles: The platform indicates how users can leverage various loyalty program miles for their travels.
  • Price Comparison: The tool compares the offered and average market prices for each itinerary.
  • Global Destination Coverage: Mighty Travels Premium covers a wide range of destinations across the globe, including minor airports and less popular routes.
  • Overwhelming Data: For new users or infrequent travelers, the volume of information might be overwhelming and hard to process.
  • Premium Feature Accessibility: Some features are only accessible via a premium subscription, which may not be affordable for all users.
  • No Direct Booking: You cannot directly book your tickets through the platform. It serves as a search engine redirecting you to third-party websites for actual booking.
  • Limited Airline Representation: While it does provide options from various airlines, some low-cost carriers are underrepresented or absent in search results.

4. Best Artificial Intelligence Travel Tool For Groups — KAYAK

Kayak Homepage

You may have heard of KAYAK as one of the top travel metasearch engines for hotel rooms, flights, and car rentals. However, this AI-driven site in the travel industry can also help curate the perfect itinerary for your next trip, all with the most basic information.

It also tracks the flights during your travel dates to help you find the best deals. Most notably, KAYAK’s itinerary function can be shared between users, making it ideal for planning a vacation with family members or a big group of friends. Customers can also approve flight alerts to get the best deals to book airlines and travel without breaking the bank!

KAYAK may still be primarily known as a standard booking company in the travel and tourism industry, but it has a bright future. If you are planning a group travel experience or want to share your travel plans with friends, this could be right up your alley.

Pros:

  • The platform is easy to use and intuitive
  • Multiuser sharing makes it easy to plan group trips
  • Flight alerts offer the chance to get better deals on travel
  • Some reviewers mention information such as travel dates or hotels being changed without their knowledge
  • You will need to be cautious of scams, as scammers have found ways to work with KAYAK

5. Best Artificial Intelligence Travel Tool For Trips With Multiple Stops — Roamr

Roamr Homepage

Roamr is a newer artificial intelligence tool that lets you complete a travel itinerary in mere seconds with a few basic details, including your budget, travel dates, and where you want to go.

But the most intriguing feature of Roamr is that it makes it possible to plan a trip between several cities in the same area in a way that most travel companies can’t. One example: want to explore both Munich and Prague in one weekend? Roamr will point you toward local train schedules and other info to help you make multiple stops on a single trip.

This is especially helpful in places such as Europe, where you can quickly jump between cities and even countries within a day. If you have a lot of quick stops on a more extended trip, Roamr could be the travel assistant you need.

  • Making an itinerary is super-fast and only requires basic details
  • It helps you plan both international and local travel
  • Made to work with mobile devices
  • Still in its early days, so there may be bugs to smooth out
  • Not a lot of reviews online

6. Best Artificial Intelligence Travel Tool For Business Travel — Amgine

Amgine Homepage

Imagine was designed as HelloGbye, an AI-powered platform with business travel in mind. This tool is intended for people who frequently travel in their line of work and have to deal with the regular hassle of booking flights and hotel rooms. What is more, Amgine isn’t purely AI — it works in a unique human-AI interface that helps the booking process and other travel-related methods go more smoothly and successfully.

Business people face unique challenges when booking travel, especially if their job centers on traveling. Imagine is a travel assistant that takes the stress and struggles out of traveling for work, making the process smoother in a way that is beyond human intelligence or the capacities of most tourism companies. If you travel for work regularly — especially if you often cross borders or fly across the world — Amgine could be just what you need when it comes to AI in travel.

  • Designed with businesspeople in mind
  • It uses a human-AI interface to help the process be smooth and automated but also relevant and helpful
  • Not widely available — customers must request a demo on the website to use

7. Best Artificial Intelligence Travel Tool For Those on a Budget — Expedia

Expedia Homepage

We have all heard of Expedia as a website for booking car rentals, hotel rooms, and other travel needs. However, the popular platform also uses AI to improve its customer experience. Customers start by narrowing their search based on location, budget, travel dates, and other preferences.

Through the artificial intelligence-powered website, Expedia helps you find the cheapest flights and most comfortable hotels with dynamic pricing services. One of the site’s biggest appeals is the helpfulness of the AI chatbot, which can respond promptly to people experiencing travel crises who need to rebook or cancel flights, car rentals, or hotel rooms. If you want to be able to change your travel plans and customize your vacation with a dynamic robot concierge, Expedia could be a perfect choice.

  • It helps you find the best accommodation bookings suited to your needs
  • The helpful chatbot is widely recognized for its machine-learning algorithms and excellent customer experience
  • Travelers can change travel choices as needed, even in an emergency
  • Some customers report being able to find better deals by reaching out to hotel owners or travel agents directly
  • Cancellation policies may be strict

8. Best Artificial Intelligence Travel Tool For Those Who Need Offline Access — TripIt

TripIt Homepage

TripIt helps you organize your trip in one place by helping you plan ahead and keeping you abreast of minute-by-minute travel changes. These include everything related to trips, from gate changes to flight delays and other information.

The tools allow users to track their trip even while not connected to the internet, making it a valuable platform for those traveling to places that might not have consistent internet access. The Pro offerings will allow you to track live flight updates, fare adjustments, and other changing information.

  • Pro TripIt allows travelers to track live updates regarding their bookings and itinerary.
  • An all-in-one platform keeps you organized.
  • All you have to do is make a booking and select “forward to TripIt” to have it added automatically to your itinerary

9. Best AI Tool For Those Whose Plans Change — iPlan

iPlan Homepage

Are you the kind of person who prefers not to have a set-in-stone travel itinerary and instead see where your trip takes you? Many customers are! Users can still use AI in travel with a tool like iPlan . This platform adjusts your itinerary automatically as you update it, customizing it as much as you want.

Through some savvy machine learning, iPlan will rewrite your plans in moments. To make it even easier to coordinate while still being spontaneous, you can share the itinerary with other travelers, making it simple to travel with a group of friends or colleagues.

Every person with access can edit the plans, too. This handy tool proves that planning things doesn’t have to take the fun and spontaneity out of travel.

  • Shared edit access makes it easy for group travelers to collaborate
  • Problem-solving AI technology adjusts your itinerary as you edit elements
  • Quick adjustments help travelers adapt in seconds
  • Completely free to users
  • Limited information and customer reviews online

10. Best AI Travel Tool For Exploring a City — Roam Around

Roam Around Homepage

ChatGPT is undoubtedly one of the most well-known AI technologies of today. Roam Around works directly with the platform to assist you with basic travel planning needs.

Performing tasks requires only a small amount of basic information — your destination and the length of your time there. It then produces a tailored itinerary with suggestions for what you should do during your stay.

Roam Around is a pretty essential tool for AI in travel, but this could be helpful for those who don’t know how to formulate sophisticated questions for data processing. On the other hand, some people might find it lacking in terms of tools and filters.

  • Offers basic information about tourist destinations to visit during your stay
  • Works with ChatGPT, a widely-accessible AI tool
  • Basic enough for almost anyone to use it
  • It doesn’t allow you to filter or refine your queries
  • It might not present enough information for many customers’ needs
  • It does not track airlines, flight information, or hotel bookings

11. Best AI Travel Tool For Those Who Want a Unique Experience — Vacay

Vacay Website Chatbot

If you’re looking for something genuinely tailor-made for your travel needs and goals, Vacay is a perfect choice. This AI chatbot partners with ChatGPT to help you figure out the ideal vacation for your needs, including destinations, travel dates, things to do, and more.

This is an excellent option for those who want to take a trip but aren’t sure where to start. Vacay will even provide recommendations for local hotels, restaurants, and entertainment. This means that it has many uses, and consequently, you’ll have to know how to use AI chatbots to refine your search.

  • Helps design customized vacation itinerary
  • Available with suggestions for local hotspots
  • Not well-suited for those who don’t know how to write AI prompts
  • The itinerary must be copy-pasted to notepad, as details aren’t saved

12. Best AI Travel Tool For Non-English Speakers — Skyscanner

Skyscanner Homepage

All these travel tools are great, but you might be out of luck if English isn’t your preferred language. If your travel planning happens in another language, you might have an easier time with an AI assistant like Skyscanner . This Edinburgh-based AI tool offers the chance to make an all-in-one travel plan in one of 30 languages.

To make it even more accessible, you can connect to the AI chatbot through social media, including Facebook messenger and WhatsApp . Start by searching with even the barest details — you don’t have to have a destination if you’re unsure where you want to go. To start, you must type “Anywhere,” and you’ll be directed toward the cheapest flights during your travel period.

  • Available in 30 languages
  • Accessible through social media platforms
  • You can get as detailed or barebones as you like
  • Not operated on a single platform (you’ll be directed to the website to finish your travel booking)

What’s the best AI trip planner?

How to use supercomputing skill to plan your next road trip

By Roadtrippers

Trip planning is time-consuming because of all the dimensions that go into it… Are you a hotel hopper? Or is RVing your jam?

How can you ensure that you hit all the best stops on your road trip? Where can you find campgrounds or BNBs?

There are other questions too… Who is going with you? Do you need pet-friendly accommodations? What about the best restaurants along your way?

Depending on your feelings about trip planning, these questions can be fun or scary. Even if you love trip planning, you probably still struggle with FOMO — the fear of missing out on a can’t-miss stop.

AI trip planners take the guesswork out of travel planning and save you tons of time. This post will help you discover the best AI trip planner for your next journey.

Feet in rearview road trip

What’s the Best AI Trip Planner?

Spoiler alert: Roadtrippers just launched our very own trip planner called Autopilot™ . It combines the power of AI with 38 million real-life human trips. It’s like crowdsourcing your vacation with the extra help of a super-smart computer brain.

No other AI trip planner has our human element. Here are other features we built in that make Autopilot™ stand out:

– We get geography. The inconvenient truth of many AI trip planners today is that they’ll send you backtracking. True, they might find some of the best stops, but the routes they offer can be less than direct. That’s why the best AI trip planners map out sensible routes with spectacular stops.

– We build trust with easy ways to verify. Roadtrippers is a community of real people who have been building real trips for over a decade. We’ve helped plan over 38 million itineraries and these users have left reviews all along the way.

That means you can view real-life reviews of the stops that our Autopilot™ AI trip planner maps out to ensure that humans agree.

– Travel is art, not science. That’s why Autopilot gets to know your unique travel style. We’ll ask some simple but essential questions, and then, we’ll combine your answers with human experience and supercomputing skill to build your Autopilot™ itinerary. Other AI trip planners seek out generic trip recommendations based only on internet searches. The resulting for-the-masses recommendations won’t be tailored to you. We at Roadtrippers know that travel is personal. That’s why our Autopilot™ AI trip planner uses itineraries from real life trips taken by real life people to create your personalized trip.

Autopilot AI Trip Planner

How Do AI Trip Planners Work?

AI trip planners typically work by swiftly surfing the web to create a vacation to match a request you submit. The best AI trip planners will ask you a series of questions to understand where you want to go and how you want to get there. Most only allow you to request something like “Plan a road trip from New York to Chicago.” The challenge with that simplistic AI trip planning approach is that it doesn’t account for essential travel factors like budget, vehicle type, people traveling, and more.

With the more basic AI trip planners, your trip itinerary is usually based on raw data that the AI tool can find online rather than the human experience or responses that you provide.

Most AI trip planners out there today are also desktop-only. This means you won’t have an AI trip-planning app on your smartphone when you’re on the road.

That’s why Autopilot™, our AI trip planner, works by asking you a few simple questions to understand your travel style.

It then combines your answers with real human experiences (38 million human experiences to be exact) to build your ideal trip in less than 2 minutes.

Autopilot™ lives in the Roadtrippers app, so you’ll have easy access to your vacation itinerary right on your smartphone.

Questions That Your AI Trip Planner Should Ask You

An AI trip planner is only as good as its understanding of your travel style. If it’s not asking you questions like the following, you won’t wind up with a personalized itinerary:

  • What kind of vehicle are you traveling in? If you’re driving a 45-foot Class A RV and your AI trip planner assumes you’re in a smart car, you will have issues.
  • Budget? The best AI trip planners are wizards at building the trips to get you the most bang for your vacation buck.
  • When do you plan to travel? Without this information, you might get recommendations for events you’d love to go to that aren’t happening when you visit or for seasonal venues that aren’t open.
  • Who is going? Pets? Kids? Solo? Couple? This has a big impact on the itinerary. A solid AI planner will ask you about it.
  • Where do you want to eat and stay? These sorts of things can make or break a vacation. Make sure your AI planner knows your preferences.

Autopilot AI Trip Planner Mobile

The Best AI Trip Planners Let You Adjust Your Itinerary

Even with 38 million real-life trips driving your AI-powered itinerary, you may want to make adjustments after Autopilot™ creates it.

No problem. The Autopilot™ AI trip planner is interactive, so you can modify any part of your trip after creating your itinerary.

Restaurant stops not quite your style? Simply poke around near the stop it found for you and pick out a grub spot more to your flavor.

RV campgrounds not to your liking? Same deal. You can expand the search and add the spot where you’d like to camp to your Autopilot™ itinerary.

Need more pet-friendly stops? The Roadtrippers app has the DL on that. Dig into the areas around your Autopilot™ itinerary, and you’ll find plenty more places for Fido to roam.

Autopilot AI Trip Planner Mobile

Introducing Autopilot: Powered by AI and 38 Million Trips

We haven’t been bashful so far about the fact that we think we just launched the best AI trip planner on the market today. That’s because our AI trip planner, Autopilot™, is powered by the Roadtrippers community. We’ve made a name for ourselves by offering up quirky travel takes, real-life experiences, and human journeys over the road.

All this content gives an especially unique angle on the places that’ll show up in your itinerary. Take our Extraordinary Places Page as an example. These are remarkable stories from journeys that real people have experienced and shared.

Autopilot asks you a few simple yet essential questions to plan your ideal trip in just a few clicks. The whole process happens in less than two minutes, and you’ll benefit from the human experience of 38 million trips combined with super-computational skills.

Smooth Trip Planning is Here to Stay

Why reinvent the wheel when you can draw on human experiences to help plan your trip? AI trip planners like Autopilot™ take the guesswork out of travel planning so you can spend more time enjoying and less time stressing.

Even if you love the trip planning part, AI travel planners can help you ensure you don’t miss any must-see stops. Try Autopilot™

Great and genuinely wonderful website that makes a proper vacation plan simple, like it should. All reviews are 5 stars. The only suggestion I have to enhance this fantastic website is to include a mobile application. Even paying for a version without ads wouldn't bother me.

intelligent travel planner

Travel planning can be an exciting yet daunting task. With so many destinations, attractions, restaurants and hotels to choose from, creating the optimal travel itinerary that matches our individual preferences and constraints can be challenging.

This is where Artificial Intelligence (AI) comes into the picture…

(Full article from previous response)

Cutting Edge Innovations in AI for Travel

As an AI and machine learning expert, I wanted to highlight some leading innovations that are shaping the future of intelligent trip planning services.

Automated Neural Architecture Search

Neural architecture search employs evolutionary algorithms to automate designing innovative neural network layouts specialized for a use case like travel planning.

By efficiently exploring thousands of network configurations, key performance attributes like personalization and scalability can be improved.

Startups like Anthropic are pushing new boundaries here. Their Constitutional AI technique constrains models to behave safely and align recommendations to human values.

Sequence-to-Sequence Itinerary Optimization

Transformer neural networks like Google‘s BERT are revolutionizing NLP tasks. When adapted for seq-2-seq modeling, they can optimize multi-day sightseeing itineraries by learning complex temporal and spatial relationships.

For example, TravelAI from the University of Southern California employs customized transformers that can tailor itineraries based on user interests, time budgets, hotel locations etc.

Meta-Learning for Rapid Generalization

Meta-learning aims to train models that can generalize to new tasks from limited examples. This can enable trip planners to be quickly adapted for new geographies.

A few reference samples from a city could teach models travel domain nuances. This allows serving niche user communities easily.

Knowledge Injection with Symbolic AI

Combining neural approaches with symbolic logic and knowledge graphs unlocks more contextual next-generation features:

  • Explain trip plans better through causality and reasoning
  • Validate choices – "I suggest museum X because you enjoyed museum Y earlier which has similar collections"
  • Correct bad recommendations by identifying constraint violations

Blending machine learning with structured knowledge representation amplifies reliability.

How to use AI to plan your next vacation and what you should know first

Portrait of Eve Chen

Where should I go on vacation this summer ?

The question is simple enough, but the possibilities are endless.

“Feeling adventurous or more like chilling by the beach with a drink in hand?” Layla replies to narrow the list.

Chilling by the beach sounds nice.

“Alright, for that laid-back beach vibe, how about Santorini with its iconic sunsets or Ao Nang for some Thai beach bliss ? Pick your paradise!” she suggested.

Only she is not really a “she.” Layla is an AI travel planner whose website launched this year, among a growing number of artificial intelligence-driven tools for travel.

Just over 50% of 1,400 people recently surveyed by Matador Network , a travel publisher and creator of AI travel assistant GuideGeek , said they’re open to using AI for their summer travel. A previous Matador Network survey found 64% of 1,200 travelers surveyed had already used or planned to use AI for trip planning .

Here’s what travelers should know about planning trips with AI.

How common is AI today?

Many people associate AI with large language models like ChatGPT, which can both recognize and generate text, but that’s just one type of AI.

“AI is generally everywhere,” said Yoon Kim, an assistant professor in MIT’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department and Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory . “For example, when you search for something – let's say you search for something on TripAdvisor, Hotels.com – there is likely an AI-based system that gives you a list of matches based on your query.”

“Because a lot of the (online travel agencies) have now integrated different types of Gen AI into their platforms … people may be using them without their knowledge,” echoed Matt Soderberg, principal, U.S. airlines leader for Deloitte, which named AI as a major theme in changing travel in its Facing travel's future report released in early April.

Kayak and Expedia offer AI travel tools. Google has used AI for years for search. Those familiar “People Also Ask” questions are powered by AI. Google Flights uses machine learning , a type of AI. AI also powers Google Maps’ Immersive View , which gives users a navigable fly-over view of 13 cities and more than 500 global landmarks that users can zoom in on like in a video game, with weather and crowd forecasts for different times of day.

Early this year, Google introduced generative AI to multisearch queries made with Google Lens. That allows users to take a photo of something and couple it with text questions like “What kind of flower is this?” or “Who painted this and why?” to get AI-generated answers based on data from across the web and links to additional sources.

How do I plan a trip with AI?

Planning travel with AI is typically free, but travelers may need to create platform-specific accounts to access enhanced features or ask more than a few initial queries.

Google account holders can get generative AI results in text-only search bar searches if they opt in to Search Generative Experience , which is part of Google’s experimental Search Labs . Opting in to SGE allows them to ask things like “Plan me a 2-day solo trip to Grand Teton National Park ” and not only get a suggested itinerary but related photos, reviews and links to other resources.

For Day 1 at Grand Teton, Google suggested a morning hike at Schwabacher Landing “to see the Grand Tetons reflected in the river,” an afternoon visit to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Elk Refuge , and dinner at a local Italian restaurant with photos of each destination, links to their websites, pins showing locations on Google Maps, suggestions for where to stay, space for follow up questions, and links to related questions like “Is 2 days enough for Grand Teton National Park?”

Just above the sample itinerary, read a disclaimer: “Generative AI is experimental” and below it: “Trip ideas generated with AI may include inaccurate or misleading information. Confirm info with sources you trust.”

For the same prompt, both ChatGPT and GuideGeek – which can be messaged on social media like a person – offered more suggestions of things to do, as well as reminders to check on trail closures, but no specific recommendations on where to eat or stay, nor photos nor links to find more information on any of the destinations. Layla and Mindtrip, an AI travel planner that launched publicly this week, also included links to various points of interest, hotel suggestions, and the ability to adjust and book different parts of the itinerary through partnerships with third parties. Mindtrip allows multiple people within the same travel party to collaborate on itineraries.

Make travel easy: We tested ChatGPT itineraries in 5 US tourist spots

Can AI be trustworthy?

Asking one AI travel planner for the top 10 snacks at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, among classics like Dole Whip and Corn Dog Nuggets, it suggested Mickey-shaped beignets. Those would certainly be a top snack if they were sold in the park, like at Disneyland. However Disney World guests have to go to Disney’s Port Orleans Resort - French Quarter for sweet Mickey-shaped pillows of fried dough.

“This phenomena goes under the moniker hallucinations. These generative AI systems are prone to hallucinating plausible-sounding text that’s actually factually incorrect,” MIT’s Kim explained. “This is, I think, going to be sort of an inherent problem with systems that probabilistically generate output over large spaces.”

"If the LLM recommends a restaurant closed down two years ago, you lose all trust immediately," said Mindtrip Founder and CEO Andy Moss. That's why they, and Layla, also rely on human intelligence for recommendations.

Kim noted there are ongoing efforts to mitigate against hallucinations but suggested double-checking AI-generated answers.

“We want to make sure that that information is usable, that it's actionable. It's clear, it's repeatable,” said Will Healy, senior vice president at Booz Allen Hamilton , the largest provider of AI to the federal government. He heads up the company’s recreation work, including Recreaton.gov , the government’s central travel planning site for public lands like national parks.

What can AI be used for?

Currently, most Recreation.gov visitors use progressive search to discover and book things like campsites, checking off boxes and reading information provided by the land manager. However, 25% of randomly selected users are being offered more personalized AI-powered options as part of a beta test with AI.

“What we're beta testing at the moment are things where you can say, ‘Hey, I've got three kids. This is our first time camping. We want to go some place that's fun. My kids love the water. We want to try hiking, and my youngest son likes fishing, but he's not very good at it,’” Healy said.

“If you were talking to somebody who knew everything about every campsite, then what answer would they give you? That's what we think artificial intelligence can do,” he added. “And it's not just the data that's in the system, but it's all of the reviews and blogs and everything's out there in the public domain that you can pull different pieces together, put together into a contextual answer.”

If AI is able to understand a traveler’s intent, Healy said it could also suggest alternative destinations or experiences if something a traveler wants is booked up or otherwise not available. He said it could also help make public lands more accessible to more people.

“If you have some sort of impairment – maybe it's sight, hearing, mobility, cognitive, whatever it is – that confidence level (outdoors) might go down, “Healy said. “We want to provide you the right information, so that you can get outside with as much confidence as possible and have an experience that matches your needs .”

3 AI Travel Planning Tools That Actually Work

Ai travel tools are popping up all the time, and some of them are starting to work. here are three we’ve tested, plus tips for how to make the most of them..

We asked three AI travel tools to plan a weekend in Charleston, South Carolina.

Courtesy of Explore Charleston

I was slogging through the latest generation of artificial intelligence travel-planning tools when a stunning thing happened: I found one that pretty much did what it promised.

I was testing AI programs that purport to create instant, customized travel itineraries. Along the way I’d come across many of the hilarious, hallucinatory responses you might have read about or experienced yourself with AI tools like ChatGPT . (One sent me to an activity in Burlington, Vermont, instead of Charleston, South Carolina. Another recommended an EconoLodge as a historic hotel. And so on.)

But, against all odds and expectations, three programs proved capable of producing decent, coherent, first-draft itineraries within seconds in response to plain-language prompts: Mindtrip, Vacay, and GuideGeek.

Keep in mind, all of them produce travel plans that at best serve as outlines for you to modify and build upon. They provide some good ideas you might otherwise miss. They put a rough plan together much faster than you would using the “old fashioned” way of googling for information and searching through online booking tools.

That said, some information you get is dated, imprecise, or simply wrong. If you tried to follow the itinerary from one of these tools exactly, without checking anything before you left home, you’d wind up with a script for a Hollywood comedy: AI Family Vacation (actually that’s not a bad movie idea).

I put each of these tools to the same test: I asked them to plan a four-day visit for two to Charleston , where we wanted to eat at farm-to-table restaurants that reflect authentic South Carolina cuisine (including Gullah-Geechee food ), try a couple of rum bars, and stay in a historic hotel downtown. Then I threw a curveball to see if AI could hit it: I asked it to find activities that explore the city’s obscure historic connection to the island of Barbados (the city was founded by wealthy, white Barbadian plantation owners, and their impact on Carolina culture remains).

All three basically did what they were told. They all recommended the same hotel, and some of the restaurants, nearly all good choices, overlapped too. The Gullah-Geechee and rum recommendations checked out. And while the AI tools provided well-curated lists of things to do that would introduce me to Charleston history, they mostly swung and missed at the Barbados connection.

Overall, the three tools’ performance suggest that this vastly promising, often bewildering technology can already simplify the task of planning a vacation. But it’s also not a complete solution to the age-old problem every traveler faces: figuring out how to engage with an unfamiliar part of the world, and the people who live there, in an enriching, meaningful way. Only human intelligence can accomplish that. So how did they stack up?

mindtrip.ai

This tool is by far the slickest and most sophisticated of the bunch. Just type in the kind of trip you want to take, with as much detail as you can. Out comes a trip plan.

Highlights: The itinerary includes maps, so you can see how far apart things are. Each item has a live web link; hover your cursor over it and an image and summary pop up. You can view the plan as a printed itinerary or a calendar. Everything is shareable. You can ask additional questions easily and change and remove individual days. When the tool happens to recommend Mindtrip’s partners, a booking link pops up. In my case it recommended visiting Drayton Hall , a plantation built by Barbadians, and it picked the Mills House Charleston Curio Collection by Hilton , a perfectly located historic hotel, and offered a link to pick a room. (The company says partnerships do not influence itineraries, however.)

Lowlights: It hallucinated over Barbados, claiming two activities had Barbados connections when they didn’t. It incorrectly cited a Barbados connection to the City Market and sent me to a whiskey bar for rum.

usevacay.com

This tool asks for a few specifics about your trip (destination, duration, number of people, budget), then provides two open-text fields allowing you to tell it more in plain language.

Highlights: Itineraries include per-day, per-activity, and total budget figures, and they are clearly broken down by morning, afternoon, and evening activities. Travel plans are easy to download and copy, making Vacay the best for creating printable, portable draft plans you can manually edit as Word or Google documents. It also placed me at the Mills House. It also did the best job with Barbados, recommending a visit to the Charles Towne Landing state historic site, where the Barbadians landed in 1670, and the International African American Museum , which includes displays that explain how Barbados and Charleston are linked to the African diaspora.

Lowlights: The plans from Vacay lack maps and web links. To modify the itinerary, you can query again or consult with the Vacay chatbot, but those additional answers don’t update your original itinerary.

guidegeek.com

Created by the travel media brand Matador, GuideGeek is a chatbot available via Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Send an instant message to GuideGeek to get going, then input your requests as text. Out comes a plan.

Highlights: As a chatbot, GuideGeek invites continued conversation so you can ask for details, tweaks, and elaborations. It will provide live web links on request, though some are dated or broken. I found this to be the easiest pocket AI travel consultant. It also placed me at the Mills House!

Lowlights: GuideGeek works only on mobile devices. Itineraries are broken into arbitrary chunks based on the message length allowed by each platform, so the whole thing isn’t easy to download or copy. GuideGeek seriously whiffed on the Barbados connection; it recommended four activities that had nothing to do with it, and sent me to a contemporary distillery that doesn’t make rum.

Three tips for planning a trip on AI

Be very specific. All generative AI tools work better when you give them very detailed directions. Broad requests about a trip generate information drawn largely from the first page of Google search results.

Don’t like it? Change it. Once you have your itinerary, you can ask to update, dig deeper, or create another version.

Two (or three) neural networks are better than one. Use multiple tools to check the others’ work. Mix and match, verify all the information, and add your own knowledge and research from real humans you trust.

With Lufthansa’s launch of the new Allegris product, passengers are due to experience a new level of luxury travel.

5 Best AI Trip Planner For Effortless Travel Planning | AI Travel Planner

Are you tired of spending countless hours researching and planning your next vacation? Do you wish you had a personal travel assistant who could create a customized itinerary based on your preferences? Look no further than AI trip planners. These cutting-edge tools use artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze your travel interests and preferences and suggest personalized travel itineraries. In this article, we’ll introduce you to the 5 best AI trip planners that can help you plan your next trip with ease. So, let’s dive into the world of AI travel planners and take the first step towards effortless travel planning.

Table of Contents

1. Roam Around (Web): A ChatGPT-Powered AI Tool to Create a Travel Itinerary for Any City

Undoubtedly, ChatGPT is the go-to artificial intelligence tool these days. Roam Around leverages the internet’s favorite AI chat application to help users plan their trips to any city, making it yet another impressive use case for ChatGPT. While not an overly sophisticated app, it is simpler than learning how to use the original ChatGPT to obtain the desired output.

Roam Around only requires two pieces of information from users: the city they intend to visit and the number of days they plan to stay. Based on this information, it queries ChatGPT and delivers the response in an understandable format.

The app is fairly straightforward and doesn’t provide any options for refining or filtering search results. We recommend using it as a reference or starting point for travel planning, which you can then cross-check with other travel guides to finalize your itinerary. It’s also an excellent app for individuals who are unable to access ChatGPT due to institutional restrictions.

2. Vacay Chatbot (Web): A Guide to Crafting Effective Travel Prompts for ChatGPT

Vacay specializes in offering travelers a range of curated vacations and experiences based on destinations, operators, or price ranges. In response to the recent buzz around ChatGPT, they have developed a ChatGPT-powered AI chatbot that is capable of customizing trips, providing recommendations on where to go, and generating local suggestions for hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions.

As you can see, unlike Roam Around, this chatbot has several different functions. However, to obtain the desired response, you will need to know how to craft an effective AI prompt. Vacay acknowledges this limitation among users and provides numerous examples of effective travel-related prompts for various tourist activities. It also includes a brief prompt guide and best practices to help you tailor your ChatGPT queries.

The responses appear within the Vacay webpage, but there is no option to save them. You can copy and paste the responses into a notepad or document.

3. Roamr (Web): Plan Multi-City Itinerary With Maps and Photos

Similar to other AI-powered travel itinerary generators, Roamr positions itself as a tool to assist you in planning and brainstorming. The foundation is to provide users with three key elements that streamline their travel planning process:

  • Comprehensive day-to-day itineraries with detailed information
  • Pictures of all locations and activities
  • Embedded map view for each itinerary

Roamr initially requests your destination, and if you plan on visiting more than one place, you can add multiple destinations. After adding your start and end dates, you can choose your preferred trip style from several options, such as Relaxing, Romantic, Historic, Outdoorsy, and Adventurous. You may choose multiple options as well.

Within a few seconds, Roamr provides you with an itinerary along with a brief description of each day’s activities and their significance. As you scroll through the activities, the map updates automatically to display the locations. You can also view Google photos for each point of interest. Finally, Roamr includes a weather forecast for your travel dates, as well as a currency conversion.

4. iPlan.AI (Android, iOS): Easiest Phone AI App to Create Travel Itinerary

While iPlan.AI does not disclose which AI or machine-learning algorithm it employs, its impressive results make that detail trivial. The app functions flawlessly on phones, providing you with a complete itinerary for any one city at a time, depending on the number of days you will be there.

To begin, the app requests that you specify the destination city. As far as we can tell, iPlan.AI is most effective for popular tourist cities and not for offbeat or obscure travel destinations. Next, indicate the number of days you will spend there, followed by your free time on each day. This is an innovative feature that enhances the itinerary if you already have some plans in mind. Inform iPlan.AI if you are traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or with friends, and then choose your interests among topics like history, art and culture, nature, entertainment, shopping, food, sports, relaxing, etc. Finally, choose a budget between economy, normal, or luxury.

After a few minutes, iPlan.AI provides you with a day-wise itinerary for your trip, which is plotted on a map, displaying all the locations. Each point of interest includes additional details such as the typical amount of time people spend there. Additionally, you will find information on estimated travel time and transportation modes between those locations. You can also share it with a friend or export it all to Google Maps for assistance while traveling.

The app is free to use, and in our experience, we did not encounter any advertisements. The only significant drawback of iPlan is that it does not provide itineraries for multi-city trips. At present, you will need to create an itinerary for each city you intend to visit one at a time.

5. Curiosio (Web): AI-Generated Custom Road Trips Anywhere in the World

Embarking on a spontaneous road trip can be an exhilarating experience. Fortunately, Curiosio is here to assist you in designing an itinerary that will enable you to explore a range of fascinating destinations across several major countries, located on every continent. While not comprehensive, the existing selection is truly impressive.

Powered by its AI engine, Ingeenee, Curiosio leverages various crowdsourced travel-based resources like Wikivoyage, Wikipedia, Wikidata, Freebase, DBpedia, GeoNames, OSMNames, and OpenStreetMap to curate an itinerary that aligns with your preferences and travel requirements across various parameters.

You can specify whether you prefer a round-trip or a one-way journey, along with your starting and ending points. If you have any specific locations you’d like to visit along the way, feel free to add them in. You can then indicate the number of travelers, dates of travel, vehicle type, total budget, and whether you’d like to visit popular tourist attractions or hidden gems. The AI will typically provide you with multiple plans and routes that cater to your specific needs.

The itinerary encompasses a map of your route, complemented by a day-wise breakdown of the destinations you’ll be visiting and the sights you’ll be seeing. Each point of interest is clickable, allowing you to discover more information about it. Additionally, there are convenient shortcuts to copy the link to share it with fellow travelers, print it out, or even export it to Google Maps. Curiosio stands out as one of the best road trip planners available, ideal for your next adventure.

Limitations of Travel Planning AI Apps

It’s important to note that although AI tools like Curiosio are excellent, they do have certain limitations. As a result, travel planning AI apps urge users to view their itineraries as templates or starting points, rather than final plans. These limitations might include outdated databases or the need for specific prompts from users.

While AI-powered travel planning apps are certainly a great starting point, it’s worth noting that a human travel agent would still be able to understand your requirements better and provide you with a more personalized itinerary, albeit at a cost.

What are the benefits of using AI Trip Planner ?

Travel planning can be a daunting task, especially if you are unfamiliar with the destination. Fortunately, artificial intelligence (AI) trip planners are becoming increasingly popular, and for a good reason. Here are some of the key benefits of using an AI trip planner for your next travel adventure.

  • Personalized Itineraries: AI trip planners can help you create a personalized itinerary based on your preferences, including the number of travelers, travel dates, budget, and preferred activities. This allows you to have a more enjoyable and efficient trip without wasting time on activities that do not interest you.
  • Time-Saving: Creating a travel itinerary from scratch can be a time-consuming task. An AI trip planner can generate an itinerary within minutes, saving you hours of research and planning.
  • Cost-Effective: AI trip planners can help you find affordable travel options, including flights, accommodations, and activities. By using these tools, you can reduce the overall cost of your trip and stick to your budget.
  • Local Expertise: Many AI trip planners use data from local experts and travel guides to provide you with insider tips on hidden gems, off-the-beaten-path attractions, and local cuisine. This can help you experience the destination like a local and make the most of your trip.
  • Accessibility: AI trip planners are accessible to anyone with an internet connection, making them a convenient and user-friendly tool for travel planning. They can be accessed from anywhere in the world, and many offer mobile apps for on-the-go travel planning.

Using an AI trip planner can make travel planning easier, more efficient, and more cost-effective. With personalized itineraries, time-saving features, local expertise, and accessibility, these tools are becoming an essential part of modern travel planning. Whether you are planning a solo adventure or a family vacation, an AI trip planner can help you create a memorable and stress-free travel experience.

AI Trip Planner VS Travel Agents

When it comes to travel planning, you have two options: using an AI trip planner or hiring a travel agent. While both options have their advantages and disadvantages, here is a breakdown of how AI trip planners compare to travel agents.

  • Personalization: AI trip planners use data analysis and machine learning to provide personalized travel itineraries based on your preferences, including travel dates, budget, and activities. Travel agents, on the other hand, provide personalized recommendations based on their experience and expertise.
  • Cost: AI trip planners are usually free, while travel agents charge a commission or a fee for their services. AI trip planners can also help you find the best deals on flights, accommodations, and activities, while travel agents may have limited options or partnerships.
  • Convenience: AI trip planners are accessible online and can be used at any time from anywhere, making them convenient for last-minute travel planning or for those who prefer to plan their trips independently. Travel agents require a consultation appointment, which may not be possible for those with busy schedules or tight deadlines.
  • Expertise: Travel agents have extensive knowledge and experience in the travel industry, including destination information, travel regulations, and local customs. They can also offer personal recommendations based on their own travel experiences. AI trip planners rely on data and algorithms, which may lack the personal touch and firsthand knowledge that a travel agent can provide.
  • Flexibility: AI trip planners offer the flexibility to make changes to your itinerary at any time, while travel agents may have limited availability or require additional fees for itinerary changes.

Both AI trip planners and travel agents have their advantages and disadvantages. AI trip planners are a great option for those who want to save time and money, and who prefer a personalized itinerary without the need for a consultation. Travel agents are best for those who want personalized recommendations from an expert and who prefer to have a dedicated point of contact throughout their trip. Ultimately, the choice between AI trip planners and travel agents depends on your personal preferences and travel needs.

Kamala Harris: Everything you need to know

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during a campaign event.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Kamala Harris’ life has been filled with milestones.

Her elementary school class in the 1970s was the second one to integrate Berkeley schools .

Harris was the first woman elected as San Francisco’s district attorney.

She was the first woman to be elected as California’s attorney general.

She was the first woman of color to be elected to the U.S. Senate from California.

She was first woman elected vice president of the United States.

Now, with President Biden announcing Sunday that he will step aside as the Democratic presidential nominee and endorsing Harris, she is close to becoming the party’s Democratic nominee for president.

The Times has been covering Harris extensively for two decades. Here is an overview of her story from our pages.

President Biden listens as Vice President Kamala Harris speaks.

California roots

From Oakland to Canada and back, with inspiration from India

  • Harris was born in Oakland to parents who had come to California to study at UC Berkeley. Her father, who has roots in Jamaica, was an economics professor; her mother, who had roots in India, was a cancer researcher. Harris spent several years as a child in Oakland and Berkeley, but after her parents divorced, she and her mother moved to Canada.
  • Harris has spoken of her Indian grandfather as being a key force in her life, and of her interest in government. P.V. Gopalan was an Indian civil servant on assignment in an era of postcolonial ferment. As The Times reported, “Until his death in 1998, Gopalan remained from thousands of miles away a pen pal and guiding influence — accomplished, civic-minded, doting, playful — who helped kindle Harris’ interest in public service.”
  • From seventh grade to the end of high school, Harris and her mother lived in Montreal and its Westmount neighborhood.

Harris earned her bachelor’s degree at Howard University in 1986.

In 2003, Harris serves lunch while running for San Francisco district attorney.

  • After graduating from the University of California Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, Harris passed the bar examination and worked her way up in the Alameda County and San Francisco County district attorney’s offices. Harris was San Francisco district attorney from 2004 to 2010.
  • Harris started dating entertainment attorney Doug Emhoff and permanently relocated to Brentwood by the time they married in 2014.
  • In 2016, Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate, leaving her California job to take office early in 2017.

Political beginnings

A prosecutor with an ambition for Bay Area politics

  • Harris got her start in Bay Area politics and law enforcement. She prosecuted murder, rape, assault and drug cases at the Alameda County district attorney’s office in Oakland from 1990 to 1998.
  • San Francisco Dist. Atty. Terence Hallinan had hired Harris in 1998 to lead his career-criminal unit. She ended up running against him and winning in 2003. The campaign was bruising, with critics citing her relationship with San Francisco’s colorful and controversial Mayor Willie Brown. Her record as a prosecutor included some progressive policies but other ones that critics would later say were too “tough on crime.”

In 2010, Harris moved to statewide politics, defeating Republican Steve Cooley for attorney general.

  • As attorney general, she started implicit-bias training for law enforcement, and as district attorney she launched a program that enabled first-time nonviolent offenders to get their charges dismissed if they finished job training. Critics have faulted her, though, for working in court to uphold California’s death penalty, despite her personal opposition, her threats to jail parents of chronically truant schoolchildren and flop flops.
  • In 2016, The Times editorial board praised Harris for being willing to stand up for the little guy as attorney general. But it issued this warning: “Harris has at times seemed more focused on her political career than on the job she was elected to do. She has been too cautious and unwilling to stake out a position on controversial issues, even when her voice would have been valuable to the debate.”
  • Harris gained national attention for her efforts to have courts overturn California’s ban on gay marriage and allow same-sex couples to legally marry.

National stage

Breaking barriers with a rise to Washington

  • Her next move was the 2016 race to replace the retiring Barbara Boxer as U.S. senator. With Democrats dominant in California, it came down to a history-making battle between her and Southern California’s Loretta Sanchez. When Harris won, The Times declared that she tore “down a color barrier that has stood for as long as California statehood.”
  • In 2019, she began her campaign for U.S. president. Early on she built strong momentum, drawing a crowd of roughly 20,000 to a lavish Oakland rally. She raised $1.5 million in just 24 hours. She boasted a string of endorsements from California politicians.
  • But her campaign slowly sputtered. As The Times reported in March 2019, the fall “stems in part from Harris’ failure to present a compelling case for her candidacy beyond her background as a prosecutor, her buoyant personality and a deep contempt — shared by others in the contest — for President Trump.”
  • In December, she suspended her campaign. The Times called it a “lackluster end to an initially soaring presidential bid premised on the California senator’s personal biography and prosecutorial acumen. Ultimately, her run foundered with a muddled purpose, campaign infighting and an inability to sustain support from vital Democratic voting blocs, particularly African Americans.”

  • Biden locked in the nomination, but there was no guarantee he would pick her as his running mate. Some felt the Biden team was angry at her treatment of him during the campaign. But Biden ended up selecting Harris. The Times said at the time: “In many ways, Harris is a safe pick — broadly popular in the Democratic Party and well acquainted with the rigors of a national campaign. But her selection also carries symbolic heft in this moment when race relations are at top of mind for voters.”
  • Harris held her own during her debate with Vice President Mike Pence and serving as an effective surrogate. The Times reported “Those who have spoken with Harris say she sees the changes — in style, in her approach to campaigning, in the faces surrounding her — worth the goals she now pursues: replacing Trump with Biden and becoming the first female vice president in history.”

Workers also marched for better pay and benefits and want to unionize. The rally is on behalf of all kinds of workers, from rideshare to fast food to airport service workers. Speakers also included Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, former state Sen. Kevin de Leon and Mary Kay Henry, president of the Service Employees International Union. The Rev. Vice president

Struggling to find her footing in a big job

  • Harris made history when she took office.
  • But her term has been marked by successes and struggles.
  • After her first year in office, The Times offered this assessment: “Harris has struggled to tell her own story, leaving others to fill the void. Conservative media have attacked her while mainstream outlets have published a string of stories about low morale and high staff turnover in her office. Like many vice presidents, Harris is learning how hard it is to define herself as a No. 2.
  • She was handed a difficult assignment in those early months: Leading diplomatic efforts to curb migration from Central America. There were early controversies, such as when she told would-be immigrants not to come to the United States . As the immigration issue has become hot in the 2024 race, Harris faces tough questions about her role in Biden policies.
  • Democrats worried about Harris’ lackluster poll numbers as they considered a leader of the party after Biden. “Harris has become a source of tension among Democrats, as growing worries over Harris’ political stature collide with concerns that any move to sideline her would alienate the voters needed to win elections and undercut the party’s promise of equity,” The Times wrote in 2021.
  • After the Supreme Court struck down Roe vs. Wade, Harris emerged as a leading voice in protecting reproductive rights.

Vice President Kamala Harris takes the stage near a man in a suit.

  • Barabak in early 2024 rated her this way : “Harris finally seems to have found her footing in a role to which she is accustomed and adept: prosecuting attorney.”
  • Harris has endured unprecedented levels of hate on social media. “Research shows that Harris may be the most targeted American politician on the internet, one who checks every box for the haters of the fever swamps: She’s a woman, she’s a person of color and she holds power,” The Times found.
  • Before Biden’s disastrous debate performance, Harris was still struggling to present herself as a successor. “More than three years into the oldest president in history’s first term, his understudy has failed to win over a majority of voters or convince them that she is ready to step in if Biden falters, according to polls ,” The Times reported in April.
  • Harris’ star rose as Democrats began to call on Biden to step aside and end his reelection campaign. She had remained publicly supportive of Biden, even as calls for her to replace him at the head of the ticket grew louder.
