Shared today (March 7), the new single comes as the latest teaser for the band’s upcoming seventh album ‘Light Verse’. It is set for release on Sub Pop on April 26, and has already been previewed by the release of lead single ‘You Never Know’.

Titled ‘All In Good Time’, the second taster of the LP sees the band join forces with Fiona Apple for a solemn, stripped-back song, which explores themes of betrayal and patience.

“ All in good time, I gave it my best/ I was alone ’til I found myself/ Grew up to be a man more or less/ All in good time, ” sings Sam Beam in the opening lines, before Apple chimes in: “ All in good time, I drifted away/ I ran my mouth ’til I’d nothing to say/ You broke my heart, then I was okay/ All in good time. ”

“Her voice is a miracle that sounds like both a sacrifice and a weapon at the same time,” said Beam of working with the ‘90s legend (via Stereoboard ).

As well as sharing the latest preview of their seventh album, Iron & Wine have also announced details of a UK and European tour, which is set to kick off later this year.

Comprising of 16 shows – eight of which are in the UK – the new run of dates will run through the latter half of the year, and follow a previously-scheduled North American leg of the tour.

Starting two months after they wrap up the US shows in Nashville (August 24), the first of the new dates will take place at the Mandela Hall in Belfast on October 22, followed by a slot at the Vicar Street venue in Dublin the next day.

From there, the UK shows run up until the end of the month and comprise shows in Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham and London, before wrapping up at the Junction in Cambridge on October 31.

The European tour dates all take place throughout the first half of November, and launch with an opening night in Copenhagen. Other gigs across the continent include shows in Stockholm, Oslo, Hamburg, Amsterdam and more, and come to a close with a show in Antwerp on November 15.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow (March 8) at 10am local time. Visit here to buy yours and check out a full list of new tour dates below.

Recent tour reviews

Saturday 23rd November, Royal Festival Hall, London, Calexico and Iron and Wine. Gig four out of four this week. After spending the afternoon sitting through my football team’s usual poor performance I am looking forward to some light relief in the comfy surroundings of the RFH for some laid back Americana sounds from this fine pair of bands.

They are over here in support of their excellent album ‘Years to Burn’ released earlier this year and we are treated to most of this plus a couple from their first EP and then a few more from their respective back catalogues and selected covers from the likes of The Everly Brothers, Echo and the Bunnymen and a fine version of Lucinda Williams’ ‘I Lost it’.

Sam Beam, aka Iron & Wine possesses one of those delicate voices that just feels like a tin of paint has been tipped over you and you are wrapped in this glorious musical gloss. He’s ably complemented on harmonies by Joey Burns. The rest of the band are super talented musicians, the sound is spot on as you would expect in this venue and there is always a danger that it’s a bit too comfortable.

I am not a fan of seated gigs. Especially when the chairs are this comfortable it’s difficult to generate any sort of atmosphere. A rock show this aint and the occasional whoop is even commented on by the band. I wasn’t expecting it to be a rock show but at times it felt like I was in my living room listening to this great music on a decent pair of headphones, note perfect but just lacking at times with the emotional connection I get from many gigs. They were almost too good, Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed the show and there were some moments of greatness such as oldies ‘Naked as we Came’ and ‘Boy with a Coin’ and it was good to hear some of the shared songs live for the first time.

A fine show but sadly I wasn’t consistently engaged throughout but when they were good they were very good.

Till the next time keep on harmonically rockin y’all.

I had seen Sam Beam perform quite a few years ago at a different venue, and it was terrific - but this Iron & Wine show at the Miller Theatre in Augusta, GA really took the cake. The only adjective that kept coming to mind during the show was "magical."

The set was so simple, yet so powerful: little puffy clouds were suspended just above the band, lit from within, glowing and fading in various patterns throughout the show. It was positively beautiful - much like Sam's vocals, along with the angelic backup harmonies of the keyboardist and percussionist.

The crowd was eerily quiet at first - so quiet, in fact, that Sam commented on how incredibly "well-behaved" we all were. And then everyone (including Sam) began to come out of his or her shell. His delicate charm and softly spoken yet hilarious jokes made us all smile and laugh, respectively, all night long.

Sam Beam's voice is difficult to describe, as it's so many contradictory things all at once. Soft, yet powerful. Soothing, yet poignant. Haunting, yet hopeful.

If you get the opportunity to see Iron & Wine perform live, please don't miss it. It is truly a lovely, ethereal experience that will warm you down to your soul.

There's so much to say about Sam's latest album and consequent style of performance that it's difficult to condense it into one review of a show, but I'll do my best. Positives, followed by negatives, followed by a kind of drawing together of stuff:

From the first to the last moment that night, Iron & Wine was original in every sense of the word. Original in a new experimentation and style in places, as the opening "Winter Prayers" from the Ghost on Ghost album took on a captivating new form whilst Beast Epic tunes like "About a Bruise" showed a man who has a brilliant talent for writing more than one kind of song. Original also in his rediscovered appreciation of his older material, both in itself and in its influence upon calming the sound of his new release. Original seemed to be the word, whether describing the original beginnings Of Iron & Wine or the originality of his new direction.

Whilst the return of the old was greatly appreciated in many senses, the restlessness remained. There's a perception surrounding Sam's music at the moment that he's found a satisfaction in the soft and muffled image so many of us still have of him, and it's partly true - but only partly.

The low points of the performance came when he tried to change up and play around with older songs which really shouldn't be touched, like Sodom, South GA and Passing Afternoon. Besides ruining wonderful songs, this also seemed to demonstrate a sense of boredom surrounding his older material, contrasting with his partial return to its sound. It felt a shame.

Of course, one will never be fully satisfied with the setlist as there's just too much quality material to cover - but isn't that a sign of the marvel we're witnessing? What an honour it was, despite certain imperfections and disappointments in the set, to see one of the greatest lyricists, past and present, live in concert.

I walked out of the Bridgewater Hall with a t-shirt. It showed the blindfolded artist of the Beast Epic cover, but the tapestry style had been distressed. The colours ran into each other, threads were falling out, and the image had become obscured and unclear. Yet, despite the distresed image, it seemed rich and flowing and bold and bright and, in some way, iconic. Sam has done so many great things in his career and moved in so many different directions, and what began as a set of 4-track demos has become something so much greater and more exciting, diverse and arguably beautiful than we began with. There's plenty one is free to dislike, but looking at the image with songs new and old in my ears as I hopped on the bus back home, I felt a strange sense of awe about what I'd just experienced.

When he returns, I hope to see it.

Iron Curtain Cycling Tour – Germany to Hungary

Our central europe bike trip overview.

iron and wine european tour

Cycle through European History

This epic Central Europe bike trip includes 5 capitals and 5 distinct cultures connected through a historic period that changed the world. It begins in Berlin where the breaking down of the Wall heralded the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. The route travels back and forth from east to west, crossing the Iron Curtain — the divide between communism and democratic capitalism, between the Soviet Union with its oppressive Red Army and the West and its allied states. The history on this tour is still palpable and unlike our other historic epic adventures, is still remembered by many of us. Take it on as a full Epic over 18 days or break it down into two parts – Berlin to Prague over 7 days or Prague to Budapest over 12 days. If this kind of historically centred trip appeals, consider our Hannibal Barcelona to Rome Tour or our Fez to Cordoba Tour.

The German Cycling Tour Leg

The route travels from North to South along the best cycling routes Europe has to offer. Our first day is spent exploring the historical highlights and cycling along a section of the Berlin Wall Trail. Heading further east the route travels through a labyrinth of rivers, canals and forest. We take small roads past palaces and through Sorbian villages to the Polish border and down the Oder-Neisse River to Germany’s most eastern city Görlitz, so beautiful that it has become a favourite of Oscar-winning movies. The Grand Budapest Hotel the most recent.

Once within the Czech Republic, we cycle through the romantic countryside of the Czech Middle Mountains and follow the banks of the Elbe River. An area so filled with castles and fortresses that over the centuries many have fallen into ruin. One of the most impressive of these is the massive Terezin Fortress, used in both World Wars as a prison and later as a concentration camp. It serves as a reminder of the often turbulent history of this region. The Vltava River travels through deep valleys and the centre of the bohemian wine-growing region into Prague. We spend our first rest day here in what was once the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

We continue south over the Posázaví highlands with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside to the summer palace of Archduke Franz Ferdinand D´Este whose assassination in Sarajevo in 1914 lit the kindling for what became World War I. Bohemia provides peaceful cycling interspersed with beautiful castles, medieval and renaissance towns surrounded by monumental walls, like the town of Telč, a jewel of the Czech Republic and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Cycling close to the Austrian border we will pass well-preserved fortifications from the beginning of WWII and once we enter the enchanting Podyji National Park, remnants of the Iron Curtain. After cycling through Šobes vineyard, recognised as one of the best vineyards in the world, we will have the opportunity to visit a uniquely-preserved Cold War fortification. On our last day in the Czech Republic we will follow the Iron Curtain trail framed with storyboards of those who tried to escape from the communist oppression.

iron and wine european tour

Cycling Tour Through Austria and Bratislava

In Austria, we cycle along wooded hillsides and through green meadows onto the Danube River and into Vienna on beautifully kept cycle paths. Here, in the ‘City of music’, another UNESCO world heritage site, we have the day to explore off the bikes. Take in the historic centre, often described as an open-air museum, or head indoors to experience the coffee culture and vibrant restaurant and music scene.

From one capital to the next, we follow the blue waters of the Danube River past the luxurious palaces of the Viennese nobility to Slovakia’s capital, Bratislava. We spend the night in the old town on the forest-fringed banks of the river, overlooked by the city’s impressive castle.

Cycling along the Danube we cross back into Austria before entering Hungary through Nickelsdorf where on June 27, 1989, in what has become a historic event, Hungarian and Austrian Foreign Ministers opened the sealed border by symbolically cutting the barbed wire fence. The process of the opening up of Hungary’s border was topped off 2 months later when more than 600 East Germans, attending the “Pan-European Picnic” on the Hungarian border, broke through the Iron Curtain and fled into Austria. A chain of events was in motion and the Berlin Wall fell later that year.

We continue through Hungary to the baroque city of Györ, then travel through rolling hills famous for their racehorse studs before returning to the Danube River. Euros are no longer of any use here and cycle paths become few and far between, but we cycle through quaint towns and Roman forts along small low-traffic roads along this beautiful river. Esztergom is a town not many have heard of, but few forget. Known as the “Hungarian Rome”, the Basilica is the largest in Hungary and is surrounded with complementary architectural beauty.

iron and wine european tour

The Final Leg of our Central Europe bike trip

The last day travels along one of the most scenic parts of the Danube, where the river enters steep hills, creating stunning meanders. We wind our way through small towns along the bank until we enter the lively heart of Budapest, past riverside restaurants and bars. This city is an architectural and historical treasure trove and a fitting end to our Iron Curtain ride. View the bullet holes and shrapnel pockmarks on buildings from the 1956 Uprising, that was so brutally crushed by the Red Army. It is also a sophisticated capital showcasing delicious food and Hungary’s excellent wines. If you’re looking to relax the city is blessed with an abundance of hot springs, something enjoyed by its inhabitants since the time of the Romans.

Team Members on this Tour

Ben weigl - trip specialist.

iron and wine european tour

Ben has been working in the bike tour industry for over 10 years and has owned tour companies, designed itineraries and guided all over the world in that time. A traveller to the core he calls Adelaide home but is rarely there these days. When he is not designing and running tours for Ride and Seek he’ll be found pack-rafting in some remote part of the world or pursuing his charity efforts with Helping Helmets and Africa Goal. His enthusiasm, professionalism, media skills and general tour expertise make Ben a very valued member of the team.

First cycling memory: Taking the training wheels of my police car painted bike, complete with flashing light and riding down the laneway behind my house with my brother and his fire engine bike. He became a firefighter, I stuck with the bike.

Favourite bike: Without sounding too much like a hipster, my father’s old Japanese steel Koga - Miyata that I restored and converted into a single speed. Moved through Melbourne traffic like the wind and completed more compliments from bearded men than I care to mention.

Top climb: Col Agnel, Hannibal - a magnificent history filled, yet little trafficked gateway to Italy

One thing on your bucket list: Buy a bush plane and get my pilot's licence

A special skill you bring on tour: Videography and photography….."Smile"!

Favourite Ride and Seek tour gastronomic experience: The Artisan gelateria in Alba (the town that smells of Nutella), enjoyed as an extended dessert on Hannibal.

Languages: English & German. My French and Spanish are coming on.

Ride and Seek tours you lead: I've been involved with all of the Epics to date

James Geen - Trip Specialist

iron and wine european tour

James has been with Ride and Seek since the start and is one of our most valued guides. A photographer by profession he lives in the Alps with his wife and daughter. During the winter he is kept busy taking photos all over the Alps and then comes on board to guide tours in the summer. Our trip specialist for Provence he has managed to encourage riders from across the ability spectrum up Mont Ventoux. His patience, good humour and natural propensity to guide make him a super popular member of the team with guests and colleagues alike.

First cycling memory: Priory Park, Southend, first time without stabilisers with my Dad running alongside holding the saddle

Favourite bike: I'm loving my Cotic Rocket at the moment (Steel is Real!)

Top climb: Colombier, as it's a great winter ski tour too.

One thing on your bucket list: Humanitarian photography trip to the Middle East

A special skill you bring on tour: Random (and often useless) facts, pretty handy with a Pappagallo (repeating verbatim what somebody else is saying) and an english sense of humour.

Favourite Ride and Seek tour gastronomic experience: Not a classic highlight given what it is - pork tripe sausage - but my experience of eating andouillette on our Provence tour will never be forgotten by me or any of those around me!

Languages: English, French and 9% Italian (according to Duolingo)

Ride and Seek tours you lead: Provence, Hannibal, Eroica, 3 Islands

Gabriel Donati - Guide

iron and wine european tour

Gabriel is of mixed German and Italian heritage and is blessed with being bilingual. His English and Spanish aren’t half bad either. Based in the city of Milano, Italy he runs a bike hire business when not guiding tours. A many of many talents he has also turned his hand to designing and patenting a cargo bike and previously worked as beekeeper. His beekeeping days have been curtailed now that he is a Dad, but he still manages  to get out of the city when guiding bike tours for us.

First cycling memory: The garage of grandpa, he was fixing motorbikes, I was riding a motorless beauty.

Favourite bike: For the city bike: Budnitz No3. For the road: English Cycles, Steve’s 953/carbon

Top climb: Muro di Sormano, Lecco, Italy, 1,6 km of pure muscular madness and multiple risks of heart attack. Maloja pass is also a favourite.

One thing on your bucket list: Be a super dad

A special skill you bring on tour: Italian and German culture with a scenic view on society

Favourite Ride and Seek tour gastronomic experience: "Ca de ven" in Ravenna Is a culinary highlight both for location and food. Their Piadina is an edible monument!

First cycling memory: Uuf! As a Dutchy I cannot remember the first time I rode a bike, but what I do remember is my parents having to push me to school, since I just hated cycling that much! I did have the raddest bright yellow mountain bike, but that didn’t stop me from getting someone to push me (special thanks to my dad!).

Favourite bike: I’m massively in love with my neon pink retro Specialized, upcycled by a close friend of mine as a surprise!

Top climb: I’m tempted to say the bridges of the Amsterdam canals, since I’m not much of a cyclist outside of the city… By foot I did climb Vinicunca, also known as Rainbow mountain, in Peru (5200m) and you can find me often with my snowboard at high altitudes in the Swiss alps.

One thing on your bucket list: Getting dropped out of a helicopter in powder heaven Alaska on my snowboard…

A special skill you bring on tour: A burning passion for cooking, great food and exciting drinks.

Favourite Ride and Seek tour gastronomic experience: I hope I can contribute to many, many great gastronomic experiences to come…!

Languages: Dutch, English, Swiss-German, French.

Ride and Seek tours you lead: I’m thrilled to say I will be joining you on The Iron Curtain!

Rich Mortiboys - Guide

iron and wine european tour

Rich has been leading cycle tours for six years, beginning in Europe before switching hemispheres and relocating to the South Island of New Zealand, which has some fantastic roads (not to mention off-roads!) to explore. Prior to guiding, he organised trail run and triathlon events in the UK and spent time as manager of a restaurant on an organic farm in deepest Devon. He views the bicycle primarily as a form of transport fro m café stop to café sto p, but also loves the sense of a journey that only a bike ride can really give. Highlights of his time on the road so far have been working for World Tour bike racing teams at le Tour and il Giro and guiding clients on the coastal roads of Norway.

First cycling memory: Digging and sculpting what seemed at the time like huge jumps to ride BMX in the woods in the school holidays. This led to MTB explorations on Dartmoor before I saw sense and traded it all in for a road bike.

Favourite bike: My trusty, steel Surly Pacer. Not as nimble as some of the carbon bikes I’ve ridden over the years, granted, but it’s served me well - first as a London commuter and now in soaking up the bumps of some of New Zealand’s rural back roads. It even goes well on gravel!

Top climb: Can I have two? It would have to be split between the perfect switchbacks that lead up to Lago di Cancano out of Bormio in the Italian Alps and the 21km/1450m of climb from the shore of Geirangerfjord all the way up to Dalsnibba in Møre og Romsdal, Norway, riding past a huge frozen lake on the way up!

One thing on your bucket list: To ride the Tour Aotearoa - 3000km of self-supported bike-packing from Cape Reinga to Bluff - the entire length of New Zealand.

A special skill you bring on tour: I think it’s always important to remind folks to look up from the computer screen and really take in the environment we’re lucky enough to be pedalling through. If I can find a really scenic picnic spot, then all the better.

Favourite Ride and Seek tour gastronomic experience: The food and hospitality of some of the hotels in Alto Adige, Dolomites. All that cheese and pasta is great, slow-burn, energy, not to mention the apfelstrudel.

Languages: Always trying to improve my French and Italian, even if it’s proving tricky to get much practice here in NZ. Te Reo Māori is the indigenous language spoken here, so that’s the current challenge - Kia ora koutou katoa!

Ride and Seek tours you lead: The Māori New Zealand Epic and Three Islands Epic

Iron curtain bike tour food and wine.

This tour travels through countries known for their hearty food. No-one will go hungry here. With little or no access to the ocean and long cold winters this area is known for its smoked, cured, pickled and fermented delicacies. Which of course includes some of the best beers in the world.

The Eastern part of Germany with its sandy soils and open forest is known for its buttery smooth potatoes, of which they have many varieties and which are often served with local bratwurst.

iron and wine european tour

Vegetarians need not fear as Germany’s favourite dish is, in fact, vegetarian, Spätzle are traditional egg noodles served in a variety of delicious ways.

For those who enjoy their beer this entire route will not disappoint. Each of the countries we travel through will tell you their beer is the best in the world, made from the clearest water and finest hops, barley and wheat. Best you taste the best of the best and make up your own mind.

The rolling hills of the southern Czech Republic and northern Austria are known for their sparkling wine, while many of the small vineyards that dot the landscape along some of the rivers we follow produce wonderful rieslings and light pinots.

The Austrian Schnitzel is known throughout the world and has almost been absorbed as a national dish in Australia, however Austria is also home to an array of wonderful treats for those with a sweet tooth. Not to be missed is a Viennese-style coffee (hope you like whipped cream) and a piece of the famous chocolate Sachertorte cake (which has its own national day) in one of Vienna’s typical coffee houses.

iron and wine european tour

The national dish of Slovakia is the Halusky; potato dumplings, which are like soft gnocchi and mixed with a slightly tangy, yet creamy Slovakian sheep cheese called Bryndza and, at its simplest, topped with fried bacon and chives.

Hungary’s breads and smoked sausages are fantastic, as are their meats, stews, sauces and desserts, but their most renowned dish is Goulash or, as Hungarians call it, gulyás, meaning “herdsman”.  It dates back to the medieval shepherds, then in the 15th century invading Ottoman Turks introduced a new spice to Hungary – paprika. This spice and the dish have since become defining elements of Hungarian cuisine and can be found in many delicious forms .

Iron curtain reading.

A section of books, serious history to illustrated memories covering communism, Stalin, the creation of the Iron Curtain, the Berlin Wall and its eventual collapse and the end of the Soviet Union. Discover why this part of the world was so important, how it divided the world for over half a century and how its effects can still be seen today.

iron and wine european tour

Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1944-1956 ( Anne Applebaum)   –   A groundbreaking history of how Communism took over Eastern Europe after World War II and transformed, in frightening fashion, the individuals who came under its sway.

Today the Soviet Bloc is a lost civilization, one whose cruelty, paranoia, bizarre morality, and strange aesthetics Applebaum captures in the electrifying pages of  Iron Curtain .

iron and wine european tour

Gulag: A History (Anne Applebaum) – T he first fully documented portrait of the Gulag, from its origins in the Russian Revolution, through its expansion under Stalin, to its collapse in the era of glasnost.

The Gulag – a vast array of Soviet concentration camps that held millions of political and criminal prisoners – was a system of repression and punishment that terrorized the entire society, embodying the worst tendencies of Soviet communism. Applebaum intimately recreates what life was like in the camps and links them to the larger history of the Soviet Union. Immediately recognized as a landmark and long-overdue work of scholarship,  Gulag  is an essential book for anyone who wishes to understand the history of the twentieth century.

iron and wine european tour

The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain (Peter Sis) – If you are after a shorter illustrated insight into life behind the Iron Curtain this a wonderful read.

By joining memory and history, Sís takes us on his extraordinary journey: from infant with paintbrush in hand to young man borne aloft by the wings of his art.

2007 New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year & Best Children’s Book of the Year

iron and wine european tour

The Cyclist Who Went Out in the Cold: Adventures Along the Iron Curtain Trail (Tim Moore) –  Scaling a new peak of rash over-ambition, Tim Moore tackles the 9,000km route of the old Iron Curtain on a tiny-wheeled, two-geared East German shopping bike.

Haunted throughout the journey by the border detritus of watchtowers and rusted razor wire, Moore reflects on the curdling of the Communist dream, and the memories of a Cold War generation reared on the fear of apocalypse – at a time of ratcheting East-West tension.

After three months, 20 countries and a 58-degree jaunt up the centigrade scale, man and bike finally wobble up to a Black Sea beach in Bulgaria, older and wiser, but mainly older.

iron and wine european tour

The Berlin Wall: A World Divided, 1961-1989 (Frederick Taylor) – On the morning of August 13, 1961, the residents of East Berlin found themselves cut off from family, friends, and jobs in the West by a tangle of barbed wire that ruthlessly split a city of four million in two. Within days the barbed-wire entanglement would undergo an extraordinary metamorphosis: it became an imposing 103-mile-long wall guarded by three hundred watchtowers. A physical manifestation of the struggle between Soviet Communism and American capitalism that stood for nearly thirty years, the Berlin Wall was the high-risk fault line between East and West on which rested the fate of all humanity.

iron and wine european tour

Picnic at the Iron Curtain: A Memoir: From the fall of the Berlin Wall to Ukraine’s Orange Revolution (Susan Viets) –  If you prefer to read a memoir to understand the final years and what followed you can’t go wrong with “Picnic at the Iron Curtain”, which shows everyday people at the centre of dramatic events from Budapest to Bishkek and Chernobyl to Chechnya. It is a memoir that spans a period of momentous historical change from 1988-1998, following through with an eyewitness account of Ukraine’s Orange Revolution in 2004.

iron and wine european tour

The Cold War: A World History (Odd Arne Westad ) –  Stunning in its breadth and revelatory in its perspective, this book expands our understanding of the Cold War both geographically and chronologically, and offers an engaging new history of how today’s world was created.

We tend to think of the Cold War as a bounded conflict: a clash of two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, born out of the ashes of World War II and coming to a dramatic end with the collapse of the Soviet Union. But in this major new work, Westad argues that the Cold War must be understood as a global ideological confrontation, with early roots in the Industrial Revolution and ongoing repercussions around the world.

iron and wine european tour

Young Stalin (Simon Sebag Montefiore) –  This revelatory account unveils how Stalin became Stalin, examining his shadowy journey from obscurity to power.

Based on ten years of research,  Young Stalin – companion to the prizewinning  Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar – is a brilliant prehistory of the USSR, a chronicle of the Revolution, and an intimate biography.  Montefiore tells the story of a charismatic, darkly turbulent boy born into poverty, scarred by his upbringing but possessed of unusual talents. Admired as a romantic poet and trained as a priest, he found his true mission as a murderous revolutionary. Here is the dramatic story of his friendships and hatreds, his many love affairs, his complicated relationship with the Tsarist secret police, and how he became the merciless politician who shaped the Soviet Empire in his own brutal image.

The Iron Curtain trip was amazing on so many fronts.

The history as we weaved backwards and forwards through the old East and West; the fantastic fun of the group; the gorgeous hotels and food; iconic cities; and unforgettable memories. This is probably my Ride & Seek favourite – so far!

iron and wine european tour

Every time we do a tour the team and the entire tour experience is top-notch!

The Iron Curtain was my first tour with Ride & Seek – what a fabulous experience!

The support team, route and accommodation were all excellent. I also really enjoyed the historical talks; particularly those personal accounts of life behind the Iron Curtain. I was lucky enough to be cycling with a really great bunch of people from across the world; great cycling & great banter in beautiful locations – what more could you ask for?

iron and wine european tour

It was fantastic to be a part of another inaugural ride. Ben did an amazing job of scouting the Iron Curtain and the team delivered their usual wonderful support throughout the ride.

Meandering from bike paths to rural then city roads, we often crossed several country borders in one day. To ride along the Iron Curtain is a fascinating and humbling experience.

Jo & Tony B

Ride and Seek provide the highest quality bike touring experience for a most reasonable cost. I don’t know how they do it, but they do. Consistently.

A high-quality tour experience with the guest’s interests always at the forefront and safety of paramount importance. I’ve done 3 tours already and plan to do many more.

Enjoy afternoon tea in London

Sample over 300-years of history in the simplicity of homemade scones with whipped cream and jam. This deliciously British treat is best enjoyed in the afternoon, complete with a hot cup of Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches and a tower of sugary delights.

Explore ancient Athens

You don't need to be a historian to appreciate the significance of Athens. Your love affair with the city might begin with goddess Athena’s Parthenon temple and the ruins of Acropolis, but it’s likely to end in a quaint alleyway getting a glimpse at daily life in this ancient capital. The story of Athens continues to unfold.

Catch a flamenco show in Spain

Discover the soul-stirring emotion of a Flamenco show in Spain. This expressive art-form has an intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO, merging song, dance and musical instruments into a performance that has to be experienced at least once. Finish with dinner of paella or tapas to round off your perfect evening.

View the Northern Lights in Iceland

Mother Nature’s wonders come to life with the Aurora Borealis or ‘Northern Lights’. In the frosty landscapes of Iceland, this light display offers viewers a genuine pinch-me moment as vivid colours dance across the night sky.

Spend a night at the opera in Vienna

Hear the talents of traditional opera with the ghosts of Mozart and Strauss in your presence. Though there are more than few places to catch the opera in Vienna, none can compare to the State Opera House (Staatsoper).

Our top 5 things to do in Europe & Britain

There are endless pinch-me moments to be found across the many countries that make up our Europe travel packages. But where to even begin? Perhaps a Flamenco show in Spain, afternoon tea in London or a Northern Lights viewing in frosty Iceland? Here are some of the highlights of our Europe and Britain trips that you're sure to love.

Paris, France

The world’s largest gallery and the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Louvre is without rival in the art world and is a must see when in Paris. Allow an entire day to explore its eight departments, not missing the Egyptian antiquities, Islamic art and various halls of sculptures. End your day with sunset by the Louvre Pyramid.

London, England

The British Museum

With some eight million works within its permanent collection, The British Museum is an illustrious European landmark. Admire objects brought back from the voyages of Captain James Cook and walk in the controversial presence of the Parthenon Marbles.

Florence, Italy

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters can be found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo fill Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River reveal the building’s architectural brilliance.

Best museums in Europe & Britain

When traveling Europe with Trafalgar, museum hopping is one of the best ways to understand the culture and history of the places you visit. You’ll find yourself critiquing ancient art and staring in awe at some of the world’s most prominent works. Here are some of our favorites.

Paella Valenciana

Saffron, snails, butterbeans and bomba rice are just some of the ingredients you might find in traditional Spanish paella. Despite originating from the coastal town of Valencia, Paella Valenciana is a variety without seafood. You'll love sitting back to enjoy a steaming plate over the sounds of Spanish jazz in a lively alfresco restaurant.

Beef Stroganoff

Now a staple dish in many parts of the world, beef stroganoff is best enjoyed in its birthplace in Russia with a vodka in hand. This simple dish of beef strips sauteed in a sour cream sauce offers a heart-warming taste of this country’s culinary heritage.

Bouillabaisse

The Mediterranean city of Marseille is where a French culinary icon can be found and devoured. The fragrant stew of bouillabaisse, commonly served with crusty white bread, boils up the finest local seafood and seasonal vegetables with the flavors of fennel, saffron and cayenne pepper.

Best food in Europe & Britain

Our trips to Europe gravitate around indulgent local mealtimes. With new cuisines and cooking methodologies found at every turn, this continent is simply delicious.

What to pack for a tour in Europe

People packing for a tour

With such a large expanse of space to explore on a European travel tour, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about European history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A good book

Exploring Europe is best done at a relaxed pace with ample opportunity to absorb your surroundings. Dedicate a few days to sitting in a park or a cafe, alternating between reading and watching the world go by.

Versatile shoes

Within the space of one outing you may experience all kinds of terrain when in Europe. Pack shoes that can see you walking from an elegant restaurant to a cobbled footpath, with a stroll along the soft grass of a park in between.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Europe, you may find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to share recommendations with friends when you return home.

All climate clothing

No matter the time of year you travel, Europe can deliver a myriad of temperatures. From frosty cities of Scandinavia to the temperate hills of Portugal, layered clothing best suits the varying micro-climates across this continent.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Your 48-hour tour guide of Moscow this winter!

iron and wine european tour

9 am – Visit the Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square!

There are several ways to explore it:

  • Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
  • Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
  • Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
  • Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
  • Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

For more information, visit the official website of the Kremlin . It’s open from 10 am to 5 pm (and it’s closed on Thursdays) in winter.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded.

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit.

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings.

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

If you are not a water person, then discover other, unusual sides of Moscow – pick one of the activities we’ve prepared for you here !

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square!

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Propaganda club in Moscow

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!

That's it! See you soon in Moscow
