8 Days in Indonesia: A Travel Itinerary From Jakarta to Bali

jakarta to bali road trip

Indonesia might induce a bit of analysis paralysis in even the most experienced traveler—after all, the archipelago has over 17,000 islands—but the beginning Indonesia traveler can get the most out of their visit by limiting their trip to the two neighboring islands of Java and Bali.

Java is one of the most densely populated islands in Southeast Asia , and its long heritage of indigenous Javanese culture makes the place a must-see for any traveler visiting the region. Our itinerary's Java leg will include stays in  Jakarta (Indonesia's bustling, engorged capital) and Yogyakarta (a center for Javanese culture) before jetting over to Bali just over the Bali Strait.

Our Bali leg will involve a day in South Bali , before taking a short drive up to Central Bali and Ubud , where you can experience the indigenous Balinese culture at its proudest and most refined.

However, before undertaking any trip to Indonesia, you should review the following travel basics:

  • Indonesia travel information : Learn all about Indonesia's visa requirements, currency, and safety guidelines for foreign travelers.
  • Money and money changers in Bali : Learn about the local currency, how to change dollars and pounds to the Indonesian rupiah (IDR), and where to have your foreign currency exchanged while on the island of Bali.
  • Drug laws in Bali and the rest of Indonesia: Drug possession and trafficking in Bali and the rest of Indonesia can get you in deep trouble so it's wise to understand the laws.

Day 1: Jakarta's Historical Sites

On your first day, you'll fly into the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta, at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Nicknamed the "Big Durian,” this sprawling megalopolis covers over 290 square miles in the western part of Java. Once you've checked into your hotel, either in Central Jakarta or in North Jakarta—budget travelers will love the cheap and plentiful budget hotels in Jakarta—your tour of the "Big Durian" can begin.

Jakarta's reputation as a polluted, traffic-choked city has, unfortunately, preceded it, but nobody should miss the chance to tour this unique city. Jakarta is an interesting study in Indonesia's modern history, as it used to be the center of the Dutch colonial presence in the "East Indies,” as Indonesia was called at the time, and entered the postwar years under the sway of the charismatic but ultimately doomed President Sukarno. The Dutch colonizers and the strongman that replaced them shaped Jakarta's most popular landmarks.

Visitors should start with a visit to Fatahillah Square in the north of the city, the crumbling former Dutch colonial capital. The vast square used to be a venue for public executions, while the former statehouse behind it is now a museum dedicated to Indonesia's colonial history.

Next, move south to Central Jakarta, and you travel in time from the 19th to the 20th century, where Indonesia's first president Sukarno solidified his place in Indonesia's history with several notable buildings.

The Monas (short for "national monument" in Indonesian) towers over Central Jakarta, the navel of a plaza that is itself surrounded by government buildings and the Presidential Palace. Book a tour to the very top of the Monas to get a bird's eye view of Central Jakarta. Then, just a short distance away, you can visit Istiqlal Mosque —the biggest mosque in Southeast Asia, whose size is very appropriate for the biggest Islamic nation in the region.

Make a retail detour to Jalan Surabaya Antique Market , where you can look over a treasure trove of Indonesian antiques, old shadow puppets, salvaged ship parts, used luggage, and vinyl LPs, before finishing off your day with a visit to a Padang restaurant , where you can try a vast range of Indonesian dishes served on little plates, along with all the rice you can eat.

Day 2: Bandung

Head to just a little south of the city of Jakarta is the city of Bandung , another Dutch-immigrant-created town nestled among mountains along a river basin. You should be able to drive or take a bus between the two fairly quickly, but we recommend departing early on your second day to make the most of the daylight hours.

Bandung is highly influenced by Dutch visitors who had hoped to make the city the new capital of the nation. This immediately inspired an influx of residents when it was first established, which eventually resulted in the creation of the sprawling city full of fine dining, European-inspired custom boutiques, and arts and cultural spots visitors enjoy today.

Once you arrive in Bandung, you can head over to Tangkuban Perahu, a volcano just north of the city (pictured above). Although the last time this volcano erupted was in 2013, the volcano is still considered active and you should check before planning a visit to this beautiful location.

After the volcano, you’ll not want to miss checking out some of the many, many tea plantations in and around the city of Bandung, most of which have existed and been in use since the Dutch immigrants first tried to claim power over the region.

You’ll then want to make it back into the city before nightfall to check into your hotel—we recommend the Dusun Bambu’s Room Facilities—and grab a bite to eat at any number of great restaurants in the area—ask your hotel concierge or consult TripAdvisor’s list of “Best Places to Eat in Bandung” to plan your dinner or simply wander around until something suits your tastes.

Day 3: Bandung

Whether or not you decide to stay at the Dusun Bambu Family Leisure Park, you’ll want to make your way there to start off your second day in Bandung to fully immerse yourself in Sudanese culture in a fun and environmentally friendly eco-tourism spot.

Here, you’ll be able to dine in a birdcage-inspired restaurant held aloft on stilts or in any number of great Sudanese establishments. Fun for the whole family includes rowing around on the waterfront, riding horses, petting rabbits, or playing on the uniquely designed kid’s playground.

You can easily spend the whole day at Dusun Bambu, but we recommend moving on to explore another great cultural venue: Saung Angklung Udjo, a one-stop workshop that teaches children of all ages about the music and culture of Indonesia. Here, you can experience a live concert, or even learn to play one of the traditional instruments taught at this unique center for art and culture.

Once you’ve finished with Saung Angklung Udjo, we recommend getting another great meal from one of Bandung’s many great restaurants before heading back to the hotel and calling it an early night—you’ll need to be awake quite early for another day of travel on day four of your trek.

Day 4: Borobudur & Prambanan

Early in the morning, board a bus or a hired car to take you to the massive Buddhist mandala known as Borobudur, more than an hour's drive from Yogyakarta. The walkways leading up to the top levels are decorated with 2,672 relief panels that tell stories of the Buddha's life and traditional Buddhist parables.

After you return from Borobudur, spend the noontime hours chasing the shade and pursuing retail therapy in Yogyakarta: buying silver at Kota Gede or watch batik being made in many workshops across the city, prior to buying your favorite swatches.

Not far from Yogyakarta's city borders, you can visit Candi Prambanan, an ancient Hindu temple complex that keeps coming back from the dead—several earthquakes have shaken the temple apart, but the local government keeps putting the pieces back together.

After exploring the temple grounds, book a seat to watch the Ramayana dance performance at Prambanan, performed on an open-air stage in front of the majestically-lit Prambanan temples.

Day 5: Yogyakarta's Kraton

First things first: You'll want to visit the very center of Yogyakarta, the Kraton , an expansive palace compound that is the home of Indonesia's only ruling Sultan, Hamengkubuwono IX.

Yogyakarta's social, cultural, and spiritual life revolves around the Sultan and his palace: Daily Javanese entertainments take place at the palace's Bangsal Sri Manganti pavilion, and the massive Alun-Alun Utara field north of the main residential area of the palace hosts the yearly Pasar Malam (night market) that accompanies the Sekaten , a week-long celebration of the Prophet Muhammad's birth.

Exploring the Kraton will take about two hours to complete; afterward, you can explore the museums and tourist attractions around the Kraton, which are all accessible via becak (Yogyakarta's rickshaws) from the palace gates.

Start with a lunch of gudeg at Sentra Gudeg Wijilan , a clump of eateries located east of Alun-Alun Utara along Jalan Wijilan. Gudeg is Yogyakarta's signature dish: a jackfruit-based savory preparation served hot with rice, crispy beef skin, and hard-boiled egg.

Afterward, explore the other attractions nearby: the Museum Kereta , which collects the Sultan's 23 ornate carriages; the Taman Sari, a former swimming, and bathing complex built for the Sultan's use; and Masjid Gede Kauman , Yogyakarta's Westminster Abbey equivalent, immediately across the Alun-Alun Utara.

Day 5: South Bali

Fly in early from Yogyakarta to Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport (compare prices on flights from Adisucipto Airport in Yogyakarta to Ngurah Rai in Bali) to get a head start on the Bali leg of our Indonesia itinerary.

For your first night, stay in South Bali, the tourist epicenter of the island. You have plenty of accommodations to choose from in these parts.

There's plenty to do within an hour's drive of your South Bali resort, but for your first day, we suggest you hit the following spots:

  • Visit the world's biggest statue of Vishnu (as yet unfinished) at the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park.
  • Go shopping at one of South Bali's many shopping centers.
  • Drive all the way to Pura Luhur Uluwatu and watch the area's Kecak and fire dance .
  • On the way back from Uluwatu, stop by Jimbaran, Bali to dine right on the beach.

Day 6: Central Bali

Early in the morning, take the hour-and-a-half drive up from South Bali to Ubud in Central Bali, where Bali's magnificent culture lives a charmed life. As you arrive, make sure you have your accommodations lined up.

In the daytime, check out the many art galleries & museums in Ubud, and see why Ubud's reputation as an art and culture hub is so richly deserved. The Museum Puri Lukisan presents modern 20th-century artwork produced by native Balinese while the Blanco Renaissance Museum showcases artwork created by an expatriate artist whose creative juices ran wild as he settled into Ubud.

Before 12-noon strikes, queue up at the Warung Ibu Oka to secure a table early; this open-air restaurant serves babi guling , or Balinese roast pig, for an extremely small number of diners every day. The restaurant is only open for lunch and closes as soon as the last pig is chopped up and served.

From Warung Ibu Oka, walk down Jalan Monkey Forest to do an afternoon tour of Ubud's Sacred Monkey Forest at the very end of the road, at the bottom of the slope. The forest and temples within will take about an hour or two to see in full.

Afterward, trudge back up to the Ubud town center to watch a traditional dance performance at Ubud Palace; the performances in town re-enact classic Hindu legends, performed by dancers in colorful, traditional costumes.

Day 7: Taking it Easy in Ubud

After the excitement of the past few days, it's now time to take it easy—and where better to kick back than infamously laid-back Ubud?

Ubud's many spas and meditation centers perform all types of Eastern and Western wellness techniques, from massage to reiki healing to acupuncture to herbal medicine.

Your last day in Ubud is also a great time to sample Ubud's shopping scene: Beginning from the Ubud Art Market across the street from the royal palace (pictured above), you can explore the many boutiques, shops, and stalls radiating from the center of Ubud to the periphery. Jalan Monkey Forest, in particular, has plenty of interesting upscale shopping finds .

Day 8: Tanjung Benoa

For your return engagement to South Bali, go to the eastern part and stay in Tanjung Benoa, the aquasports center of the island. The beach off Tanjung Benoa is no good for surfing, but it's encouraged a more laid-back tourist scene compared to more hectic Kuta on the other side of the island. Spend the morning learning a new aquasport, then tuck in at one of the restaurants in Tanjung Benoa before enjoying a spa break at the Thalasso Bali Spa.

In the evening, catch the Devdan performance at the Bali Nusa Dua Theatre, to see Indonesia's rich dance heritage condensed into a single, spectacular two-hour show: An excellent way to end your long week in Indonesia.

JAKARTA TO BALI: A 2-Week Indonesia Itinerary

JAKARTA TO BALI: A 2-Week Indonesia Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

When you have 17,500++ islands, each teeming with its own culture and color, sights and flavors, all richly laid out like patterns on a batik cloth, you’re probably eager to share these with the rest of the world as well.

Just like what Indonesia is doing. The enormously successful “Wonderful Indonesia” tourism campaign presents the country to the world in ways other campaigns can only imagine. The numbers tell its success. As a tourist sector, Indonesia is currently the ninth-fastest growing in the world, the third-fastest in Asia, and first in Southeast Asia. The campaign is probably doing something right.

To be fair, Indonesia is a promoter’s paradise. You can pick a random spot on the Indonesian map, and you’ll likely find something of interest. From the temples of Java to the beaches of Lombok, from cool Mt. Bromo to spicy Bali, there’s something for visitors of every spectrum. Feeling adventurous? Immerse between world-class diving sites and scenic mountaintops. Looking to party? There’s an entire island for that. What about the meditative pilgrims? Indonesia has enough temples to reach nirvana.

From space, one could probably hear a faint murmur above Indonesia, coming from the collective “ooohs” and “aaahs” of awestruck travelers. But once you get past your own initial gasps of wonder, you’ll see there’s a lot of work involved in promoting these destinations. “Wonderful Indonesia” didn’t occur in a vacuum. It’s a concerted effort from the government, the private sector, and individual contributors. It takes a country to promote a country.

We were invited to take part in the Airlines Influencers Trip, sponsored by the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with AirAsia. For this trip, four key destinations were involved: Jakarta, Yogyakarta and surrounding attractions, Surabaya and surrounding attractions, and Bali. The entire trip took 13 days. Here’s our itinerary, which you can also follow.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

DAYS 1-2: JAKARTA CITY TOUR

You can say Jakarta is Manila’s brother from a different mother. We have the same Malayo-Polynesian heritage, same European colonial past, same intense traffic jams. Even as you step off the airport, you’ll immediately notice the traits we have in common. The hustle and bustle, the frenetic energy, the noise and bright lights and hurried pedestrians, these all kept me comfortable in familiarity.

Yet Jakarta is still terra incognita, a city full of unknown quirks and surprises, just waiting for some local-looking foreigner to discover them.

jakarta to bali road trip

We got to visit Kota Tua (Old Town), Jakarta’s historical center. During the 17th to early 20th Century, Indonesia was under Dutch colonial rule. The seat of power was located here, when Jakarta was still known as Batavia.

Most of the colonial buildings in Kota Tua are still intact, especially those surrounding the storied Fatahillah Square. These buildings now serve as heritage and cultural sites, like Museum Batavia (Entrance fee: IDR 5,000/PHP 19), a national history museum, and Museum Wayang (Entrance fee: also IDR 5,000/PHP 19), which showcases traditional puppetry.

But the experience in Fatahillah Square was not limited to learning about states, puppets, and puppet states. We also got to enjoy food served at the Café Batavia. This old-fashioned restaurant with a nice ambiance lies within one of the oldest establishments in the square. A meal in Café Batavia costs between IDR 100,000-200,000, or PHP 350-700.

We then headed to Ancol, a seaside complex and popular local attraction within the city. Ancol is designed as a one-stop leisure site for Jakartans, with a theme park, restaurants, activity centers and a beachfront. We spent the afternoon playing paintball, then dinner at the Pier, a trendy resto with a view of the waterfront. We then retired for the night.

So far, so good. Too bad we only had one full day to spend in the capital. I made a mental note to return.

Early the next morning I, along with Wira, one of our Indonesian hosts, went and tried out TransJakarta, the bus rapid transit (BRT) system operating in main Jakarta roads. Instead of the usual rail system that takes up road space, the TransJakarta system uses existing roads and, with shuttles, transport commuters to stations scattered throughout the city.

It’s fairly cheap too: just IDR 3,500 (PHP 13) for an entire ride.

Via TransJakarta, we visited Monas, the National Monument, a towering symbol of Indonesian independence. It was only two stops away, and we were back to the hotel just in time to leave for Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, bound for our next city: Yogyakarta.

DAY 3: TRANSIT TO YOGYAKARTA, RATU BOKO PALACE

Yogyakarta is royal, and I don’t just mean in a superficial sense. It is the only Indonesian city/region still ruled by monarchy; the Governor is also the head of the Yogyakarta Sultanate. Jogja, as it’s colloquially called, is an important center of Javan culture, history, and education.

jakarta to bali road trip

We arrived at our next stop, Ratu Boko Palace, a little pressed for time. The sun is starting to set, and there was limited time to fully explore the place and take pictures, as the ruins are only open until 6 pm. Still, even with the impending darkness, one can sense the subtle grandeur these old ruins emanate.

These ruins are named after the legendary King Boko, a prominent monarch in local folklore. However, the true origins, or even function, of the ruins remain unclear. Curiously, the site serves a different function today: as one of the best places to catch the sunset in Jogja. To get to Ratu Boko Palace from Jogja’s Adisutjipto International Airport, you can opt for either a Grab or GO-JEK ride service. The ride will take about 20-30 minutes, and will cost between IDR 15,000-20,000 (PHP 55-75) for a motorcycle, and 30,000-40,000 (PHP 110-145) for a private car.

Turns out that our brief visit to Boko Temple was only a preamble to where we’ll be going next.

DAY 4: BOROBUDUR TEMPLE

We were up very early the next morning to get to Borobudur Temple, in time for sunrise. It was a couple of hours’ travel by bus from our hotel, and we’re to enter another province, Magelang.

By now, the guys had a lock on their favorite spots in the bus. The loud guys are at the back, the even louder Pinoys in front, while the rest are fully settled in their own personal nests. I shared a seat with Anita, another Indonesian host, to whom I learned quite a few about Indonesian pop culture.

jakarta to bali road trip

It was still dark when we got to Borobudur Temple (Entrance fee is at USD25, about PHP 1,350). There was also a light drizzle, and a few of us were a bit worried this will somehow dampen the experience, so to speak. There’s quite a ways to get to the base of the temple, and after that, some further nine stories to climb before reaching the top.

Once we’re at the topmost dome, some of us started to set up their cameras, a few found time to meditate, while others just tried to keep dry and awake. It was wet, slippery, and cold. We waited for the sun to rise and for rainclouds to disappear. We waited for a miracle.

And there it was. As the sun rose, the grey clouds briefly gave way for the morning sky, and light finally touched the temple stones. Borobudur, still wet from the rain, glistened in the sunlight, the sun’s rays seeping through cracks in the granite walls and limestone carvings. This once-dreary place turned into a regal tower of glimmering stone.

You can almost hear everyone’s spirits being lifted. It was the window of opportunity we hoped for. Like the first hint of spring, these creatures stirred and sprung back to life, frantically looking for the best spots, tugging along Wita or Kanty, two hosts who are also models, to pose for the cameras. Now that we can see everything, we got to marvel at how huge Borobudur truly is. At 115 feet, it is the largest Buddhist Temple in the world. At this height, you can witness a panoramic view of Magelang, including a glimpse of the stately Mt. Merapi from a distance.

Buddhists regard Borobudur as a holy site, a place for deep contemplation and veneration. With what I’ve just witnessed, it truly is worthy of pilgrimage. I silently uttered a prayer of thanks.

DAY 5: MERAPI LAVA TOUR

Day Five into the tour, and our next main stop is a bit more upbeat, the “Lava Tour” at the foot of Mt. Merapi. In this country of volcanoes, Merapi is one of the most active; its last eruption was May of 2018. Our visit to the Sisa Hartaku Museum, a memorial of the 2010 eruption, provided a clear reminder of Merapi’s destructive, volatile power.

jakarta to bali road trip

The idea of exploring the foothills of an active volcano sounds enticing as is; pair it with a rolling landscape and rugged terrain, and you’ve got a recipe for adventure.

And the Lava Tour was all about adventure. Riding on off-road jeeps, we got to explore the boondocks surrounding Mt. Merapi. It was a rough n’ tough ride, and occasionally a pain in the… nether regions. But what’s an adventure without getting your feet wet, right?

Turned out it was more than our feet. Part of the tour was to ride through streams and rivers, splashes and all, and, with the constant rainshowers, we were pummeled with water on all fronts. The ride home was a bit uncomfortable, but was the Lava worth drenching your undies? Definitely. It was a gritty, soaking, fun divergence from our usual stops.

DAY 6: OMAH KECEBONG

The next day, we went to Omah Kecebong, a guesthouse in rural Yogyakarta, to immerse in local Javanese customs and ways of life. We got to wear traditional Javanese clothing, which made me look even more Indonesian, as well as learn how to create our own wayang straw puppets.

We also saw for ourselves how batik cloth is made, entirely by hand, and went on to create samples ourselves. After a good while of dripping liquid wax on cotton (and burning some toes along the way, not my toes though… sorry Wira), I can confidently say that I suck at this.

Still, it made me appreciate how painstakingly hard it is to create even just a yard of batik , and to be able to pass the craft down many generations is a statement to the Javanese people’s adherence to heritage and tradition.

DAY 7: TRANSIT TO SURABAYA

jakarta to bali road trip

Second only to Jakarta in size, Surabaya is a vibrant metropolis, an important hub in almost every aspect: history, culture, commerce, even entertainment. During our time there, we were able to visit the House of Sampoerna, a museum dedicated to the leading Indonesian tobacco company. Within the city, we were also able to dine in some of Indonesia’s top eats: The popular Pondok Tempo Doeloe chain of restaurants, the Tanamera Coffee House, and the oft-praised Zangrandi ice cream parlor.

DAY 8: BROMO SUNRISE TOUR

Surabaya is also the gateway to my most anticipated part of the tour: our visit to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. We actually transferred to another hotel to get nearer to the park, at the stylish Jiwa Jawa Resort. Like the previous Borobudur trip, we got up very early, and rode on off-road jeeps to get to the viewpoint in time for sunrise.

jakarta to bali road trip

Mt. Bromo is actually part of a larger complex of mountains and volcanoes within the Tengger caldera. Bromo is the most famous of the group, named after the Hindu god Brahma. The caldera also contains the flat-topped Mt. Batok, Mt. Kursi, Mt. Watangan, and Mt. Widodaren. You can also see Mt. Semeru, the highest peak in Java, in the background.

We had breakfast consisting of coffee, gorengan (fried seafood batter), and Indomie fried noodles (yum!). At this altitude, this simple meal is a hot, delicious refuge from the chills. Maybe that’s why I remember it with fondness.

Locals in Bromo offer jeep tours around the caldera. Ours was the so-called Sunrise Tour. For IDR 500,000 (PHP 1800), the jeep takes you to three stops. Catching the sunrise overlooking the caldera was our first.

Bromo Viewpoint

It was still dark when we arrived at our viewpoint. As per usual, everyone proceeded to mark their spots. Soon after, I heard the distinct hum of drone propellers. Amazing shots will be made today.

The sunrise arrived like an orchestral performance. As the sun started to peek, you can almost hear strings playing the first notes. As the golden rays reached the tops of the mountains, the cadence increases. For each mountain feature that touched light, another instrument joined in on the chorus. By the time the sun illuminated the whole caldera, an entire visual symphony was revealed. It’s nature’s concerto, worthy of a standing ovation.

We then traveled within the caldera itself, near the foot of Mt. Batok. In a sea of sand and ash, I was able to see how wide the caldera really is. It’s just miles of flat, grey earth, surrounded by magnificent mountains and cliffs on all sides. And of course, Mt. Batok, grand and photogenic, royalty among the lowly dunes.

Bromo Savana

jakarta to bali road trip

Our last stop was the Bromo Savana, so-named for the seemingly out-of-place greenness of this valley, a stark contrast to the greys and browns of the caldera. A tent market is located in the middle of the Savanah, where peeps can refresh, buy food, and check out souvenirs.

For a couple of days we stayed in Surabaya. By Day Nine, we headed to Juanda International Airport for the last destination of the tour, Bali.

DAY 9: TRANSIT TO BALI, NIGHTLIFE

Ah, Bali, what a final act. It’s the sweet desert after a satisfying full-course meal. It’s the encore to an epic rock concert. It’s the happy ending to a relaxing… telling of a Balinese tale. I know it, you know it, and I’m pretty sure the Ministry knows it, and I feel the decision to make Bali last was very intentional.

jakarta to bali road trip

Before we even got to the hotel, Pinneng, the tour leader, announced something that made the whole bus erupt: we’re to extend one more day, and that day will be spent on the esteemed Nusa Penida Island. With his dramatic way of announcing it, I think Pinneng knows it, too.

Bali is all about rhythm. The rhythm of the waves in Bali’s sublime beaches. The rhythm of a hundred dancing souls, entangled in a Kuta club.

You can see it in the patterns formed by the rice terraces of Tegallalang. You can taste it in the delicious Balinese food prepared at Rumah Desa village. You can hear it in the voices of the chanters of the Kecak ritual dance. The rhythm of the ancient and new, the spiritual and carnal, of man and nature, they all converge here.

That night, everyone was in a festive mood, and we went to a nearby club. Almost everyone came, even yours truly. I was surprised myself; I have been very poker-faced for the majority of the tour, talking only when asked, asking only when needed. I had no plans to go to no freakin’ club.

But who would’ve thought that I would get pulled from the corner of the club, away from my shell, and smack right into the middle of the dance floor? Bali can do that to you. It makes foreigners greet each other like old friends. It makes middle-aged men and women dance to the tune of “Backstreet’s Back”. In Bali, the rhythm can be irrational. It will take your arm, make your body move, and make you lose yourself. I was the last to dance, but not the first to sit back down.

Day 10: LAKA LEKE, ULUWATU TEMPLE

I head out to Day 10 still in a bit of a daze. For today, we’re off to see the cultural side of Bali, starting off with a visit to Laka Leke, an esteemed local restaurant. There we got to enjoy some native Bali dishes like urab sayur (a spicy coconut/veggie salad), Balinese sambal (a staple side-dish made from chilis), and my personal favorite, bebek (crispy duck legs deep-fried to the bone).

In the afternoon, we visited the Uluwatu temple grounds, a religious site situated right beside the Uluwatu cliffs. It’s a large complex filled with different sites for immersion and contemplation (and maybe a few pictorials), but the highlight of the day was when we were made audience to the Kecak Dance, a hypnotic display of chanting and dancing that’s a retelling of the ancient epic Ramayana, only performed when the sun is setting.

Day 11: RUMAH DESA

Bali has a large Hindu population, and many still live in villages founded by their ancestors. We had a tour in one of these villages, including their local markets and village centers.

We then visited Rumah Desa, a homestay in the regency of Tabanan. Rumah Desa means “house in the village” in Balinese. Rumah Desa offers group activities showcasing Balinese customs and traditions. For the day, we got to cook authentic local cuisine, ride water buffaloes, and immerse in traditional Balinese living.

Day 12: TEGALLALANG RICE TERRACES, NIGHTLIFE

For our second-to-the last day, we visited something that is quite familiar to us Filipinos: rice terraces. These terraces, however, are located in the central Balinese district of Tegallalang.

Legend has it that the knowledge to create these paddies originated from the rishi Markandeya, a revered Hindu sage. Easily accessible (it’s right by the side of the road), these rice fields have served the local populace for centuries, but is now one of the most visited attractions in the island. The more entrepreneurial townsfolk have installed swings and platforms that IG-savvy visitors can use, for a small fee. To get there from Kuta, you can opt for either Grab or GO-JEK (an Indonesian ride service), and will cost you at least IDR 160,000 (PHP 580).

jakarta to bali road trip

That night, we also had our farewell party, attended not just by the participants but also representatives of AirAsia and the Ministry of Tourism. You’d think everyone would be all formal and stuff, but it’s the last night, the bar is open, and the music is blaring. What followed was something The Poor Traveler doesn’t cover. That’s all I’m gonna say about it.

But when the night was over, when the club had closed, when everyone had said their good nights (with varying levels of alcohol involved), there was time for reflection. It’s easy to fall in love in this place. Many of those who visit never wish to leave, evidenced by the number of foreigners who choose to extend their stays. Can you blame them? Bali is a bubble, a fantasy, an island of both pleasure and contemplation, where you can go wild one night and introspective the next, a place where you can get lost in the companionship of others, and still reflect on your own solitude.

It’s a song that serenades those who seek it. But like all songs, the rhythm has to end.

DAY 13: NUSA PENIDA

The Nusa Penida trip, on our last day, Day 13, felt like a cleanse. Not everyone was able to extend their stay, and we set out minus a few faces we’ve grown familiar with the last two weeks. Funny what two weeks can do.

jakarta to bali road trip

Nusa Penida was an enjoyable trip, make no mistake. We get to visit the dinosaur-shaped Kilingking Beach, and the striking Angel’s Billabong. Day tour packages here are priced at IDR 500,000 (PHP 1,800), where you have a private car and your own driver/guide. You get to see the above places, and more.

But today, the atmosphere among us was different. People were noticeably more silent, lost in their own thoughts. Maybe because it’s the last day, and everyone was already planning what to do next. Some have other places to travel to right away. Others are already planning to extend. A few were probably relieved that the work here’s done. All just doing what they do best, finding ways to express all these in their platforms, sharing the beauty of Indonesia to everyone else.

As for me, my inner thoughts are only of gratitude.

Special thanks goes to the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism for making this trip possible. Thanks also to AirAsia for sponsoring all our flights. To all of my fellow participants, I appreciate the friendship and awesome memories.

Also special thanks to all our Indonesian hosts. Indonesia is wonderful because there are wonderful Indonesians like you. I’m truly grateful.

Indonesia Itinerary for 10 Days: Jakarta to Bali Route

' src=

Are you planning a trip to Indonesia? If so, then this Indonesia Itinerary can help you plan an amazing trip to this beautiful country.

I first visited Indonesia in 2017 and completely fell in love with the country. The beaches were amazing, the waterfalls are beautiful, and it was fun (almost!) to include both Jakarta and Bali in our Indonesia 10-Day Itinerary.

After coming back from this gorgeous country, I wished to have stayed longer there but my job stopped me from pursuing this thought and so, I had to make do with a short but memorable 10 days in this country of volcanoes and islands.

If you are also short on time and wondering how to make the most of the short duration, then this itinerary is perfect for you.

Indonesia Itinerary for 10 Days

If you are just like me and don’t have a lot of time to spare in this country, then this 10-day Indonesia guide will help you plan a short but amazing trip to this paradise.

Day 1: India to Jakarta (Indonesia)

My Indonesia trip started from India, from Hyderabad to be precise. I had my flights booked for Jakarta – the capital of Indonesia and had a 2-hour layover at Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

Since I had chosen an Air Asia flight, it was budget-friendly and cost me only 18000-20000 INR for a return trip to Indonesia.

Note : If you are planning to book an AirAsia flight, then book it from the official website. Your PNR number should be the same for layover flights so that you don’t need to check in your bags again during the layover.

Day 2: Jakarta to Yogyakarta

On the second day of my Indonesia trip, I reached Jakarta around 12 p.m. and was really struggling to understand how to go to Yogyakarta. Since it was the week of the Eid holiday in Indonesia, all the trains were full and I only had the option to take a bus to reach Yogyakarta.

For this, I had to reach the Pulo Gebang bus stand from where I could book an onward bus to Yogyakarta . Since I was on a budget trip, I chose to take a local bus from the airport to Pulo Gebang . It cost me around 40,000 Indonesia Rupiah (190 INR)  a person and it took around an hour to reach the bus terminal.

From Pulo Gebang, I got an A.C bus to Yogyakarta which took around 8-10 hours to reach and cost me 425,000 Indonesia Rupiah (2050 INR) per person. The bus was quite comfortable and had an attached bathroom that was decent enough to be used. I reached Yogyakarta around 2 a.m. and had to take a cab to reach our homestay.

In Indonesia, Go-Jek App is quite famous and cheap but I didn’t have the app installed so we had to hire a taxi on the road which cost us 80000 Rupiah (380 INR) , a little more than the gojek car. I finally reached our homestay ( 50000 Rupiah (250 INR) per person) around 3 a.m. and hit the bed because we were too tired from the 24-hour journey.

Day 3: Yogyakarta Sightseeing and then Transfer to Kuta, Bali

Borobudur temple and prambanan temple (yogyakarta).

The next day, I planned to visit the famous Borobudur   Temple and the Prambanan Temple which Yogyakarta is quite famous for. So, we left the homestay with our luggage since we had a night flight to catch for Bali.

We left around 11 a.m for Borobudur and spent around 30-45 minutes looking for a bus or a cab. Finally, an Uber arrived and we boarded it to head out to Borobudur which was situated around 50 km from Yogyakarta.

Luckily, our Uber driver was really friendly and nice and since he knew English, we were able to talk to him and learn more about the history and volcanoes of Java and the rest of Indonesia. He told us many amazing stories and also offered to take us from Borobudur to Prambanan and then leave us at the airport.

So, we traveled the whole day in an A.C SUV for 470000 Rupiah (2300 INR).  We certainly could have reduced the cost if we knew the area well and had a clue about the bus routes but alas, we were blindsided there.

We first went to Borobudur and reached this place around 2 p.m.

Let me just say that, it was definitely love at first sight. We have always been to historical and nature-friendly places and Borobudur is one such marvelous place. You see so many Stupas here, arranged so beautifully together and you can see volcanic mountains surrounding this place which provides an amazing view.

The sunrise is said to be really exceptional here and you could easily spend a whole day just gazing around and walking through this architectural beauty.

jakarta to bali road trip

We spent around 2 hours here and didn’t even realize so much time had passed when it struck us that Prambanan stays open only till 5 p.m. So, we ran to find our car and start for the other amazing site, we stopped at the pharmacy but we got lost on our way out (Yeah, the exit from Borobudur can be a little confusing). Although if you have time in hand, we would definitely advise you to not miss the sunrise in Borobudur.

Thankfully, our driver was waiting just outside the exit so he guided us to the car and we sped toward the Prambanan temple to witness the sunset over there. On our way, our guide told us an amazing story of the Prambanan princess and how the 999 temples of Prambanan came to exist.

We finally reached the famous Prambanan temple around 4.45 p.m and then we just strolled around marveling at the beauty of it all. The temples here resemble the Angkor Wat temple and you can also see the Merebu volcano from here. We were completely mesmerized by the beautiful sunset here and wished we had a little more time.

Finally, we started for the Yogyakarta airport for our flight to Bali ( 3200 INR ) and said goodbye to the cultural city of Indonesia.

Note: Entrance tickets (770000 Rupiah – 3700 INR per person) to these UNESCO Heritage sites is quite expensive and valid for 2-3 days so make sure that you make the most of it and spend at least a day at both the sites.

We reached Bali, the most popular place in Indonesia,  around 11.30 p.m. and so we headed to find a hostel for the night. The cabs are pretty expensive over here so we walked the whole way from the airport to Kuta. It took us around 1-1.5 hours to reach the hostel and to know that it was already full.

So, we went in search of another hostel that might be within our budget and that is how we stumbled upon Legion street and the Kayun Hostel Downtown which is 100000 Rupiah (500 INR) per person for a night.

jakarta to bali road trip

Day 4: Kuta Sightseeing

The next day, we started for the beaches and the famous Uluwatu temple of Bali . We hired a scooty from the beachfront side for 130000 Rupiah (650 INR) .

Kuta beach was too crowded and more a place for surfers and families so we didn’t spend too much time here.

Jimbaran and Pantai Pandawa Beach

We headed to the Jimbaran beach which was actually more peaceful and spent an hour or two here. We had our lunch on the beach on a sunbed which cost me about 2150000 Rupiah (650 INR) .

Then, we headed to the Pantai Pandawa beach which was on the other side. It took us about 45 minutes to reach the place but it was so worth it.

The route to Pantai Pandawa goes through a hilly road so there are a lot of twists and turns which really make the whole adventure so much more fun. And the view near the Pantai Pandawa beach is just too gorgeous with the blue sea and the bright blue sky.

Uluwatu Temple

Next, we headed to the Uluwatu temple which was another 40 minutes through the hilly terrain. And it was certainly both exciting and scary. Driving in the Kuta region is a little scary as people speed a lot and the roads are too hilly so you have to be extra careful.

By the time we reached Uluwatu temple ( Entrance price: 30000 Rupiah – 150 INR per person), it is almost dark and the temple was about to close but we hurried a little and were able to look from the inside.

This temple on the cliff is really beautiful and there are regular shows held here which you can watch to learn a little more about the Balinese culture.

Finally, we headed back to our hostel as we had planned to party a little in the streets and so, we went back and dressed up.

We danced with random strangers in different clubs and really enjoyed the vibe here and has a really expensive meal (98500 Rupiah – 500 INR per person) at Sky Garden Bali on Legion street but the entire night was completely worth it.

jakarta to bali road trip

Day 5: Kuta to Ubud and Sacred Monkey Sanctuary

On our 5th day, we were heading for the Ubud region which held the main attraction for us. We had booked a van through our hostel itself which cost us 80000 Rupiah (400 INR) per person and took 2-3 hours to reach the place.

There, we checked in a hostel named The Joker Hostel ( 100000 Rupiah – 500 INR per person) and then we made our way to the famous Ubud Monkey Sanctuary .

Ubud Monkey Sanctuary

It was within walking distance from our place so it took us just 20 minutes to reach and take the ticket ( 50000 Rupiah – 250 INR per person).

The thing about Ubud is that it has a completely opposite vibe to Kuta. It is not a party place and most shops close down here by 10 p.m. but it has a much cleaner and cooler atmosphere. Also, there are many amazing temples, waterfalls, and other attractions here than in the Kuta region.

The Monkey Sanctuary was one which is actually huge and filled with numerous monkeys (as the name suggests). It is a great place to just chill and relax and roam about.

Also, there are many exit points here so you have to be careful and always beware of the monkeys, they can snatch away any interesting items from you. 😛

Then, we headed back to our hostel from another gate which took us about 45 minutes. We relaxed for some time in the hostel. In the evening, we just strolled around the shopping street and had a delicious Pizza meal at one of the places.

jakarta to bali road trip

Day 6: Ubud Sightseeing

Tegalalang rice fields (unesco heritage site).

This was our D-day when we were going to cover the most important spots in Ubud. We started with the famous Ubud Tegelalang   Rice Fields and were met with a slow downpour of rain. However, on the way, we witnessed a really pretty sunrise which absolutely made our day.

Once we reached the Tegelalang rice field, we were just blown away by its beauty and its vastness. We didn’t even realize how big this place actually is so we just walked deeper into the place and spent a greater part of our morning here. Also, there is no entrance fee for this place so don’t fall for anyone’s trap.

Teganungan Waterfall

Next, we came back to our hostel to have some breakfast, and then we made our way to another famous attraction, Tegenungan Waterfall . The entry ticket to the waterfall is about 20000 Rupiah (100 INR) per person. But make sure you visit this place in the morning because, by the afternoon, it gets really crowded.

So, we spent a couple of hours here just splashing in the water and then hiking to the top of the waterfall.

Balinese Massage and Swing at Zen Hideaway

Then, we headed back to the city to try the famous Balinese massage. ( 100000 Rupiah – 500 INR per person)

Now, this was our first time so we weren’t sure how it would be and how embarrassing it might turn out to be. But I must say, both of us were completely satisfied with our experience.

Our entire body felt completely loose and languid after it. Gosh, I can still remember how great it felt to just relax and let yourself get massaged.

After that, we headed for the highest swing in Bali at Zen Hideaway which was about 45 minutes from our hostel. The way to this place is absolutely picturesque and you can witness a gorgeous sunset from here too.

When we reached Zen Hideaway, the sun was about to set but we still had enough time to enjoy ourselves. So, I paid 520000 Rupiah (2500 INR) and then first tried my luck at the small swing to myself acquainted.

Once I was comfortable, I moved on to the bigger swing, and God, how lovely it felt. It felt as if I was just flying in the sky with no tension or fear.

Truly, that was one of the most freeing experiences of my life and I am so glad that I gave it a shot.

jakarta to bali road trip

Day 7: Ubud to Kuta to Denpasar (Bali) to Probolinggo

Early morning, we started for the famous Campuhan Ridge Walk.  The place was barely 2 km from our hostel and then stopped at the Water Palace on the way too.

Both of these places are really amazing and great places to explore in the morning. We witnessed a beautiful sunrise from the Campuhan Ridgewalk although it took around 30-40 minutes of hiking on the path.

Kuta to Denpasar (Bali)

Next, we endured a series of misfortunes that incidentally made our Indonesia itinerary even more memorable. We accidentally booked the wrong flight tickets for Surabaya which was near our next destination.

As a result, we had to figure out some other way to reach Surabaya from Bali. After a lot of searches, we found a bus that would be leaving in the evening so we booked it for our journey.

We had some time to kill so we asked about the Scuba Diving cost and how much time it would take. The tour guide said it would barely take 2 hours and the cost would be 400000 Rupiah (2000 INR)  per person which was quite cheap.

Alas, we forgot to counter the fact that traffic in Kuta is unimaginable and so, we missed our bus.

Thankfully, the owner of the tour guide returned our money. We headed to the Denpasar bus in a taxi ( 115000 Rupiah – 560 INR ). All this drama certainly added the cost but we hoped to reach Bromo on time and be able to visit the famous volcano.

Denpasar to Probolinggo

We found a bus for Probolinggo for 320000 Rupiah (1600 INR) per person which took 12 hours.

The most interesting part about this journey was that the buses are transported to the other island via a ferry. So, they get loaded into the big ferries where you can go on the deck and stretch your legs for a while.

jakarta to bali road trip

Day 8: Probolinggo to Mount Bromo to Yogyakarta

Probolinggo to mount bromo.

We reached Probolinggo at 5 a.m. in the morning. Then, we walked to the bus stand where we would find vans for Bromo.

Sadly, there weren’t any vans going so early because there weren’t a lot of passengers. Usually, you have to pay just 20000 Rupiah (100 INR) per person for reaching Bromo. However, since we were alone, we had to hire the entire van for 325000 Rupiah (1600 INR ).

After an hour, we reached Bromo and here we took a room for 100000 Rupiah (500 INR) . We freshened up and then headed to Bromo on a bike (for two people).

Mt. Bromo is an inactive volcano and looked like some alien planet. You can climb the steps to the mountain to reach the top which can take about 30 minutes. There is a lot of dust flying around but once you reach the top, the view looks spellbinding.

We spent some time on the Bromo and then we headed back to our room. We also wanted to watch Bromo from afar and climb other peaks.

So, we hired two motorbike drivers to take us around. It cost us 225000 Rupiah (1100 INR) per person for the entire trip. And, they dropped us back at the Probolinggo bus stand so that we could head back to Jakarta.

So we climbed the mountain on the bikes and it got so damn cold that we were freezing by the time we returned. But it was so amazing. We watched Bromo from afar and it looked lovely. But that’s not all, we witnessed one of the gorgeous sunsets too.

jakarta to bali road trip

Mount Bromo to Surabaya to Yogyakarta

After having the time of our lives, we returned to Probolinggo. Then, we took a bus to Surabaya ( 30000 Rupiah – 150 INR per person ). We reached in 2-3 hours but we still had to reach Jakarta from here which was around 18-20 hours away. So, we took a bus to Yogyakarta for 138000 Rupiah (660 INR) per person.

Day 9 and 10: Yogyakarta to Kuningan to Jakarta to India

Yogyakarta to kuningan.

From here, things went a little downhill for us. We reached Yogyakarta early in the morning around 6 a.m. but Jakarta was still 12-14 hrs away.

So we were waiting for a bus to Bandung which would have ideally left us closer to Jakarta. However, since we were in a hurry, we took a bus to Kuningan ( 180000 Rupiah – 860 INR per person).

Now, Kuningan is a small town that is 3-4 hours away from Jakarta. Unfortunately, we confused it with Jakarta’s Kuningan. That was a huge mistake. By the time we reached Kuningan (3-4 hrs away from Jakarta), it was 1 a.m. Our flight was at 7 a.m. in the morning.

Kuningan to Jakarta to India

Somehow we got a local bus to Jakarta for 150000 Rupiah (720 INR) per person, but we reached only by 8 a.m. so we ended up missing our flight to KL.

Thankfully, we got another flight to KL leaving at 2 p.m. so we booked that and reached our destination (Additional cost of 4400 INR  per person which we could have saved 🙁 ).

jakarta to bali road trip

There were a lot of other mishaps even after reaching KL but let’s keep them for some other time.

Overall, the Indonesia trip was a memorable one and I learned from the blunders that we made. I hope that you learned something too and will now be able to plan a successful Indonesia itinerary for yourself.

Jakarta to Bali in 8 days: Essential Indonesia Itinerary

Indonesia is an immense archipelago that consists of more than 17,000 islands. Out of them, some are as obscure as uninhabited sand bars, while others are internationally famous destinations like Bali. An 8 days trip, to be honest, is not even enough to cover Bali well and this island nation needs years of repeat visits to enjoy its diversity to the fullest. However, most people do not have that kind of time to invest in a country and many prefer to skim through the best of Indonesia. So, this Indonesia itinerary is for those who are time-bound and would like to experience the highlights of this gorgeous Asian country. Please note that this is only an idea, so feel free to improvise and drop me a message if you need any tips or suggestions.

Breakdown of the essential Indonesia itinerary for 8 days

Day 2 . Explore Borobudur and Prambanan on a combined day trip. Ideally, try to catch a Borobudur sunrise and a Prambanan sunset. This is going to be a long day. Overnight stay at Yogyakarta.

Day 3 . Go on a small group tour to Mount Bromo. This is also quite Do-It-Yourself kind of trip and check out this post for DIY details. Overnight stay near Mount Bromo.

Day 4 . Carry on towards the Ijen Plateau to experience the gorgeous sulphur lake and the mysterious blue fire. This is a remote location and being a part of a small group tour makes sense. You can buy a Mount Bromo-Ijen Plateau small group tour at Yogyakarta. Overnight stay near Ijen Plateau.

Never in my life I imagined doing a road trip to Bali, until pandemic happened. Hubbie has always wanted to do road trip to Java which I always refused. My motto is if we can fly why should we bother driving and spending hours and hours sitting inside a car. When pandemic broke followed by countries shutting down border one after another, our Government also followed the trend and imposed something like a lock down.

Our family was doing not too bad on staying at home and not going anywhere that year. We were somewhat paranoid and we also just came back from Iceland. Compare to others who haven’t gone on holiday at all that year, we were the lucky ones who managed to have one just before. We went for a short glamping getaway to Lembang in Trizara Resort with a lot of precaution. Come January 2021, we come to realization that covid is not going to go away soon and we have to adapt to stay sane. And that means we need a break and have a holiday. Flying is not an option because children below 12 years old were not allowed to fly and the risk of catching Covid at the airport and on the plane is not small either. Plus we were paranoid period. Our option is road trip and as Hubbie has always wanted to do road trip, we thought Let’s do Bali. Surely driving to Bali is less harder than driving thru Iceland snow storm lol.

So if you open Google Map, the distance between Jakarta to Ubud Bali is 1,185 km and it requires 19 hour driving non-stop. Obviously we are not going to drive non-stop as Hubbie is the solo driver. We would break the journey into 2 nights to reach Bali. Java Toll Road is simple and a straightforward road. However the toll road stopped in Probolinggo and from there on, you had to continue through Pantura Road to reach Ketapang Ferry Port in Banyuwangi. We have accommodation booked for Bali only and decided to wing it for the road trip part.

jakarta to bali road trip

D-day! We left our house around 9am (later than what we planned lol) and drive to Semarang with a stop for lunch in Purwakarta to eat their famous Sate Maranggi. Jakarta-Semarang is 6.5 hours driving and after many stops we reached Semarang around 6pm. We were already hungry, so we drove to Gombel to have dinner in Alam Indah Restaurant. Gombel area is situated in the upper part of Semarang where you can see a beautiful view of Semarang city lights at night. We stayed the night at Novotel Hotel.

jakarta to bali road trip

We checked out around 9am after breakfast and continue driving to Situbondo. We took a break at a Rest Area outside Surabaya which has a mosque for Friday prayer and Restaurant for lunch. Pantura road was busy as usual with a lot of trucks. It was already 8pm when we reached Situbondo, so we decided to stay in the area instead of pressing thru to Banyuwangi which was still 2 hours away. We stayed the night in Rosali Hotel, 20km away from Pasir Putih Situbondo. Rosali Hotel is a complex of hotel room and villa surrounded by a large garden.

jakarta to bali road trip

After breakfast in Rosali Hotel, we drove to Ketapang ferry port (around 2 hours) and take the ferry to Gilimanuk (30 minutes). We had lunch in Gilimanuk and continue driving to Ubud (3.5 hours) where we have booking for Villa Kayu Manis in Sayan.

jakarta to bali road trip

Today is Nyepi Day so we cannot go outside out villa and asked to remain quiet. Hotel is still providing the usual service. So we had our breakfast, lunch and dinner inside our Villa.

jakarta to bali road trip

Bali is still very quiet because this is still Nyepi Holiday but we are already allowed to continue normal activity and go out.

Day at the Beach

jakarta to bali road trip

Check out in the afternoon and drive back to Gilimanuk to cross to Banyuwangi. We stayed in Kokoon Hotel, a new Hotel situated in the center of the city. It was already dark when we get to Banyuwangi so we went straight for dinner in Pesona Seafood Restaurant. This place has really good food! The seafood was fresh and tasty. It’s not super cheap but average for seafood prices in Indonesia.

jakarta to bali road trip

We’re going to explore Banyuwangi. Visiting Pantai Boom and Baluran National Park. Pantai Boom, located only 2km away from the city center, is a famous place to see sunrise and a hang out place for local people. Pantai Boom has many instagramable spots, one of them is the spiral bridge. There is also eco adventure park and harbour. Once a year there is a popular dance festival “Gandrung Sewu” attended by at least a thousand dancers.

From Pantai Boom we stopped to buy sego bungkus for lunch at Baluran National Park.

The Baluran National Park is known as the African Savannah of Java. The savannah (Zona Bekol) turns brown in the dry season and the park is surrounded on one side by the sea and ringed by hills and Ijen volcano. You can expect to see buffalo, antelope, monkeys and peacock roaming in the savannah. The best time to visit the National Park is either in the morning or close to sunset time.

We left the park before dark and stay the night in Goya Hotel Probolinggo. There are not many good hotel option in Probolinggo. Situbondo is actually a better chooce to spend the night.

jakarta to bali road trip

Check out Hotel and drive to Surabaya to have lunch in Layar Seafood Restaurant and dessert at legendary Zangrandi. Both Restaurants are one of Surabaya culinary legend. From there we continue to Semarang and stay the night there.

jakarta to bali road trip

As this is the last day of our Road Trip, we took time to do morning walk in Semarang Old Town, my favourite area of the city.

If you are in Semarang, don’t miss visiting Semarang Old Town (Kota Lama Semarang). Kota Lama is a cultural heritage area where we can see many old and historic buildings from the Dutch Era. At that moment, the area was the center of government. The architecture of the buildings is in European style with large main doors and windows, decorative elements, and high ceilings. There are some interesting spots to visit such as Blenduk Church, Taman Srigunting, Jiwasraya Insurance Building, Outdetrap Building, Semarang Art Gallery, De Spiegel, Marba, and so on.

For those who like walking, strolling around the corners of Kota Lama is very interesting to do since you can walk comfortably in the pedestrian area. You can also take a regular tour organized by a touring community. On a weekend evening, you can enjoy the atmosphere of Car Free Night along Jl. Lt. Gen. Suprapto.

jakarta to bali road trip

From Semarang we drive thru toll road to Cirebon and stop in the rest area Heritage KM 260B. The rest area was once a sugar mill factory and now converted into rest area which has various restaurants and shops.

jakarta to bali road trip

We took another stop in Cirebon to eat Mie Koclok. Most places only start selling Mie Koclok for dinner but Mie Koclok Pak Rasita is one of the few who open for lunch. From Cirebon we drive back to Jakarta (around 3 hours) and arrive before dark.

Tips, What to Know and Prepare

  • As Hubbie is the solo driver and I don’t have a valid driving license, we take a break every 2-2.5 hours to ensure he’s not sleepy or tired. We have plenty of drink and snacks in the car.
  • We were traveling during pandemic time so we are extra discipline with hygiene. We carried disinfectant spray, hand sanitizer and installed air purifier in the car.
  • We carefully chose Hotels which practices good Covid 19 Health Protocol and take extra careful when we eat out for lunch and dinner
  • Semarang is actually not an ideal stop in term of distance from Jakarta. If we were to re-do the trip, I would leave home earlier and stay the first night in Surabaya and the second night in Banyuwangi so we can cross to Bali in the morning.
  • Banyuwangi has a lot of major attractions and is worth to stay for more than just 1 day . We couldn’t go to Ijen on this visit and only finally went on our second visit. Even then we still haven’t explored the small islands and the beaches there. So if you are doing road trip like us, allocate at least 3 days for Banyuwangi.
  • Situbondo area is interesting and famous for their beach (Pasir Putih). We stayed in Rosali Hotel, which I highly recommend but if you want to stay in the beach front location you can stay in Utama Raya Cottage. They have a big rest area and we went there for dinner on our way back to Probolinggo. We should’ve just stayed the night in Situbondo instead of Probolinggo because the hotel choices in Probolinggo is more limited.

INDONESIA – A wonderful 2-3 week Indonesia itinerary: Jakarta to Bali across Java

Planning a wonderful Indonesia trip

Indonesia is a huge country consisting of over 18000 islands and 2 or 3 weeks are not enough to explore all. In this Indonesia itinerary I take you to the capital Jakarta and from there across Java and finally by plane to Bali . It’s a trip packed with day tours but leaves enough time to relax at the hotel pool too. The trip I have done with my daughter (10 years) was 2.5 weeks but I’ll give options to reduce it to 2 weeks or extend to 3 weeks. This Indonesia itinerary is your guideline. One must see place I skipped which is the Bromo volcano which would have made the trip 3 weeks. I did that because eventually I’ll be visiting Semarang or Surabaya for business and I’ll do a short trip there at that time. Join me on this wonderful Indonesian adventure!

This wonderful Indonesia itinerary is quite straightforward and is easy to plan. I do prefer to be flexible and normally book everything separate with hotels on refundable rates in case I need to change something. It wasn’t the first destination of my annual trip with one of the kids; this year my daughter joined me. I started with 3 days in Phuket and continued to Kuala Lumpur for 2 days and finally arrived in Jakarta. No jetlag anymore! If you have to come from far you might need to add an additional day before and after the itinerary. Plan accordingly and if you have a stopover and a huge time difference an additional night at the stopover point might reduce the jetlag.

There are a few things to plan ahead:

  • Hotels at the various places and the arrival flight to Jakarta and departure from Bali.
  • Private transport between Jakarta and Bandung to make a stop at the Bogor botanical gardens. This should cost not more as approximate 120 USD and although more expensive as train, cheaper as flying.
  • The flight from Yogyakarta to Bali must be booked in advance to avoid sky high ticket prices.
  • The day trip from Bali to Ijen is best planned through a tour operator as you’ll need transport to harbor, ferry ticket, again transport to hotel, transport to the volcano, guide to hike up and then back to the harbor and back to Bali. Tour operators can arrange this pretty cheap and will make it much more efficient.

Everything else can be arranged on the spot!

I arrived early morning in Jakarta for the start of my Indonesia itinerary on a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur . I used the first day to explore the area around Lapangan Merdeka which is a huge square in the middle of Jakarta. Make sure to go up the National Monument for some magnificent views. From the square it’s a short walk to the Istiqal Mosque and the Jakarta Cathedral. You’ll pass the presidential palace and several government buildings on the way. Late afternoon I had some time left to have a quick look at the National Museum of Indonesia but if you don’t have the time left it’s better to visit the next day. In the evening I met with Vera, owner of Jakarta Walking Tours to do a Jakarta food tour by night . Something I recommend everyone to do!

The second day was of particular interest as I visited old Batavia. This was once part of the Netherlands, my home country. The Jakarta History Museum is a must visit as is the doll museum. I wandered around this historical old town in the morning after which I walked toward the harbor to see the traditional fishing boats. Around 3PM my daughter wanted to go swimming in the pool of the Intercontinental Jakarta Hotel , a great place to stay.

ALTERNATIVE PLANNING: If your Indonesia itinerary makes you arrive in the evening you could visit all places of interest the next day. You might need to take a taxi at some points to safe time. This way it’s possible to plan an additional beach day on Bali for example.

The Bogor Botanical Gardens are one of the better botanical gardens in the world. Maybe the Singapore Botanic & Orchid Gardens are better? These gardens are located about 60 kilometers south of Jakarta and easily visited as a day trip or on the way to Bandung as I did. It depends on the complete Indonesia itinerary what is best to do. I also wanted to visit the Pancuk Pass with its tea plantations, but this didn’t work out. The road is one way to the pass in the morning and one way back after lunch. I left Jakarta at 9AM which would be fine one a regular day but not on a Sunday as the road was closed already when I arrived. The gardens are beautiful with many tropical plants, butterflies, and places to pick nick and relax. A private taxi shouldn’t cost more as 120 USD and this is for sure the best way to travel this day. I arrived late afternoon at the Intercontinental Bandung Hotel where I recommend everyone to stay.

Read more travel inspiration for the Bogor Botanical Gardens in the following day trip report: INDONESIA – The Bogor Botanical Gardens as a stop between Jakarta and Bandung

Bandung is also called the Paris of Java and is a very pleasant city to visit. It has a nice climate, beautiful colonial architecture, and lots of interesting nature around it. I stayed at the Intercontinental Bandung Hotel which has magnificent views over Bandung. One must do day trip from Bandung is to go south to Kawah Putih (White Crater). It is a 3-hour drive to Kawah Putih but the scenery is wonderful so time passes quick. Kawah Putih crater looks like from another world with it’s white greenish water, burned trees and surrealistic formations.

Around lunch time I continued to Situ Patenggang which is a large lake with restaurants and some outdoor activities. In the afternoon I finished the day with a hike to Kawah Rengganis which is a hot spring a few kilometers down the road. It was another 3-hour drive back to the hotel but first I stopped for Saung Angklung Udjo. A musical performance. A long day trip from Bandung but one I can recommend everyone to include it on a Indonesia itinerary.

Read more Kawah Putih travel inspiration in the following day trip report: INDONESIA – Alien landscapes at Kawah Putih / White Crater as a day trip from Bandung

North of Bandung there is another wonderful volcano crater called Tangkuban Perahu. It’s also a must visit place around Bandung together with the Perkebunan Nusantara VIII tea plantation. They are not far apart. I suggest again going by private transport as it’s simply the most efficient way to get there. Start at the crater and then go for lunch and a hot spring bat at Sari Ater Hotel & Resort. After lunch I recommend going to the tea plantation and if you have time stop by the Curug Cimahi waterfall before dinner time. Kampung Daun is a great place to have dinner as it’s very local and has a beautiful garden setting. It was late before I arrived back at the Intercontinental Bandung , but I still had time for a spa treatment!

Read more Bandung travel inspiration in the following day trip report: INDONESIA – Bandung day trip: Tangkuban Perahu volcano crater tour, tea plantation & more

SHORTEN YOUR TRIP: If you cannot do both the south and north day trips from Bandung I recommend only going to Kawah Putih but do skip my other suggestions of that day. Visit a tea plantation south of Bandung as its one of the better tea areas of Indonesia. It will shorten this Indonesia itinerary by a day.

Bandung is also called the Paris of Java and it sure is a beautiful city with lots of old colonial buildings. I recommend starting early so that you’ll have time to catch the afternoon flight to Yogyakarta . Buildings of interest include: Villa Isola, Gedung Merdeka (visit the inside too!), Savoy and Grand Hotel, Gedung Sate and if you can get in the West & East halls of the institute of technology. All those buildings are fine examples of art-deco style and many designed by architect Schoemaker. Some buildings can be entered and if they look closed just ask if you can enter! Make sure you’re ready to go to the airport around 2:30PM to catch the 4:30PM flight to Yogyakarta and not to mess up your Indonesia itinerary.

Read more travel inspiration for Bandung in the following day trip report: INDONESIA – Bandung city tour: Must-see colonial places & Angklung concert

EXTEND YOUR TRIP: You could easily add a night in Bandung and explore more of the city. It’s a very pleasant city. Fly next day in the morning to Yogyakarta and maybe see already the Prambanan. If you don’t want to see all outlying temples around the Prambanan you can remove day 10. In that case and this Indonesia itinerary won’t be longer.

The Borobudur temple is THE place in Indonesia to go for a sunrise tour. No Indonesia itinerary is complete without a visit to the Borobudur. It’s beyond imagination so wonderful but do yourself a favor and stay at Villa Borobudur just a 5-minute drive away. You don’t want to go all the way in the morning from Yogyakarta . They offer authentic luxury inspired by Indonesian hospitality. In the morning the private chef made a light breakfast before the private guide joined my daughter and I for the Borobudur sunrise tour. It’s amazing! After the tour I returned at Villa Borobudur for a short nap, fun in the private plunge pool and a good lunch. The other half of the day I explored a few minor temples around the Borobudur and went to a pottery factory with my daughter. It was an amazing day which I finished with a spa treatment for 2 with my daughter.

Read more Borobudur travel inspiration in the following day trip report: INDONESIA – Magical sunrise at the Borobudur temple & a tour in the area

The Dieng Plateau is a highland in central Java and best reached from Yogyakarta or even better from the Borobudur area (it saves at least an hour). That’s why I planned it on day 8 of this Indonesia itinerary. Hinduist temples are scattered around the plateau of which several are beautiful examples. They are amongst the oldest in Indonesia. There are also several (active) volcano sites worth stopping by. The drive from Villa Borobudur to the Dieng Plateau goes over winding roads with beautiful views. It takes about 2 hours. Go at 7-8AM and you should be back around 7PM if all goes well.

It was time to say Villa Borobudur good bye; it sure is a magical place worth visiting on its own. I decided to visit the Ceto & Sukuh Temples on the way to Yogyakarta . They are not really on the way but best done this way as it saved an hour driving and there is a lot of driving in this Indonesia itinerary. I also wanted to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Sangiran Early Man site, but this was closed the Monday I wanted to visit. Both temples are worth a visit but keep in mind it’s a long day from 7AM to 9-10PM evening. My private driver knew a good place to have dinner: porcupine sate! I never had that before and it was very delicious. In Yogyakarta I stayed in a hotel downtown so that the next days would be efficient.

The Prambanan is a huge temple complex near Yogyakarta in central Java . They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see in Indonesia. Unlike the Borobudur which is a Buddhist complex the Prambanan are Hindu temples. The Prambanan archeological park is the main place of interest with huge temples and those that are best preserved. There are however many more outlying temples between rice fields, on hill tops and within villages. I visited many of them as I planned a full day to explore them in this Indonesia itinerary. If you only go to the Prambanan temple, you’ll finish in half a day but seeing the outlying ones will take up a full day. Some are not more as some stones, but many are beautiful examples of Hindu temple architecture. I do recommend hiring a car (with driver) to get from one place to another to save time.

I recommend spending a day in the Kraton Complex (Sri Sultan’s palace) of Yogyakarta . The palace is a beautiful place where you’ll learn about the Sultan’s monarchy. The main court and the residence are most important, but I recommend also going to the nearby Taman Sari or water castle. Other places of interest include the mosque, colonial church, and silver workshops. A day is easily filled in Yogyakarta and it depends on your interest what you want to go see. The Kraton Complex however is a must-see! After dinner at 8PM my flight left for Bali.

ALTERNATE ROUTE: To extend this Indonesia itinerary a few days I recommend going overland to the Ijen volcano and not fly to Bali. As I explained I haven’t done that as I will return one day for business to see these places. Just make sure you visit the Bromo volcano and Malang which are the most important places of interest. From Ijen (see my day trip visit below) you can take a ferry to Bali.

I first two nights in Bali of this Indonesia itinerary I stayed at the Chedi Club Ubud which is a luxury resort surrounded by rice fields. A place I highly recommend. From there it’s also easy to do the Bali day trip to 7 places if interest if you have just a day. Start the day early and drive to the Batur Volcano & Lake with the Supreme Water Temple of Pura Ulun Danu Bator on its rim. Make sure to go coffee tasting at Cantik Agriculture Luwak Coffee; it’s special! The Tirta Empul Temple, Gunung Kawi Temple, Tegallalang rice terraces and Elephant Cave Goa Gajah are also all worth a visit. Bali is completely different as Java but as beautiful for sure. I must admit that in the tourist area’s it’s quite hectic but if you’re out into the countryside it’s very nice and relaxing. Make sure to start the day at 8AM to be back at the hotel around 4-5PM for some pampering at the spa.

The Ijen volcano is located on the most eastern tip of Java and best reached from Bali if you’re not going to the Bromo volcano. The volcano is famous for its blue fires and sulfur miners. I simply had to include this in my Indonesia itinerary. Hiking the Ijen volcano is done at night, starting at about 1-2AM. After spending the morning at the pool I left the Chedi Club Ubud at about 1PM for a 2-hour drive to the ferry. It’s a short ferry ride and another hour drive to a hotel near the Ijen volcano. Book something simple as you’ll only sleep a few hours there.

My daughter and I were picked up at midnight for an hour drive to the Ijen volcano. It was drizzling, cold and windy. This is NOT a good time to hike this toxic volcano. The hike up takes 2 or 3 hours and if you’re unlucky as I was you can only see a bit of the blue fires. The wind was blowing the wrong way (happens a few days a year) and thus the hike was in the sulfur damps which wasn’t fun at all. It was dangerous, and I almost died. Read my Ijen day trip report to find out what happened. The hike down was easier, and I was back at the hotel before 9AM for breakfast and a shower. I didn’t go back to sleep but took a late morning ferry to Bali so that I arrived around 2PM at the Hard Rock Hotel Bali . My daughter thanked me as she enjoyed the pool there the rest of the day.

My flight back home was only in the evening, so I still had a full day in Bali left. I decided to not explore more temples and just relax with my daughter at the Hard Rock Hotel Bali pools. I’ll be back some day as Bali is also a great place to start a trip to some other islands of Indonesia. Now I hope to visit Papua New Guinea first, which I hope to do in 2018.

I had lots of fun with my daughter this trip. We saw a lot together, relaxed a lot and had long talks. It’s a great way to bond better and going with just one of the kids makes this also easier. It was the first long trip I did just with my daughter, the second would be a USA West Coast road trip of 2 weeks . What’s next? I don’t know yet but for sure something will come up eventually. I hope this Indonesia itinerary helps you plan your trip in Indonesia. It’s a wonderful country!

Deciding to do a road trip in Bali was probably the epitome of our travels around Southeast Asia; deciding to take it during the wet season maybe not as great!

However, we left prepared, and in the end, we had some of the best adventures, made lifelong friends and created incredible memories.

A road trip around the island of Gods is the best way to discover a more authentic Bali. There are plenty of things to do, from purification ceremonies, incredible waterfall treks and ancient temples to hiking volcanoes and learning about the Balinese culture; you could even take a Balinese cooking class!

If you’re thinking of taking a road trip around Bali, do it!

Is A Road Trip In Bali Worth It?

Since the island of Gods is well and truly on everyone’s bucket list it’s a place which gets a lot of tourism and places like Ubud and Canggu can be really heavy on the crowds. This is great if you’re in the mood for a party, but if it’s a tranquil and cultural Bali that you’re after, the best way is on a Bail road trip. And, to make it even more fun, do it on a scooter !

In fact, we hadn’t planned to take a road trip around Bali, but we wanted to explore the more rural areas, and after 5 months in Canggu, it was time to fly the nest!

Taking that Bali road trip was exactly what made our trip there so memorable, and if anyone asks I’ll tell them the truth. A road trip in Bali is totally worth it!

Summary Itinerary: Scooter Route In Bali

A quick summary of this 4-week Bali itinerary so you can see exactly where we are going. (Full itinerary below)

  • Start Point: Denpasar . This itinerary assumes you are flying into Denpasar. Visit Jagatnatha Temple, which is the biggest temple in Denpasar.
  • Stop 1: Canggu . This is where we stayed for most of our time in Bali, it’s great for a laidback, sunkissed, beach-chilled, party vibe.
  • Stop 2: Medewi . The sleepy fishing town of Medewi – it’s got one of the best waves for learning to surf.
  • Stop 3: Ijen . Head over to Java to climb the first volcano on this Bali road trip. Mt. Ijen is famous for its blue fire and stupendous views.
  • Stop 4: Pemuteran . Pemuteran , in the north of Bali, this is where you’ll truly start to experience rural Bali.
  • Stop 5: Lovina . Takes us over to the beach town of Lovina where you can visit one of the top natural hot springs in Bali – Banjar Hot Springs .
  • Stop 6: Kintamani . The best way to do this is on the Mt Batur sunrise hike!
  • Stop 7: Amed . Amed is my favourite place in all of Bali! There are so many amazing things to do in Amed , such as shipwreck diving!
  • Stop 8: Ubud . Head to Ubud for some downtime and re-balancing. Visit the Camphuan Ridge Walk or take part in a purification ceremony. Explore centrally and visit Ubud Market, Royal Palace and Kajeng Rice Fields .
  • End Point : Uluwatu . And finally, finish in Uluwatu , where you can say goodbye to Bali with a cocktail overlooking the cliffs at Ulu Cliffhouse .

Nunggalan beach in Uluwatu.

Planning Your Bali Road Trip

You’ll need to plan (roughly) your Bali road trip route but this 4-week itinerary is pretty easy as it follows the coastal ring road around the island. We go inland a few times and hop over to Java to climb Ijen Volcano but the rest is coastal paradise!

👉 Related Post: if you’re serious about planning a road trip around Bali why not do it on a Bali scooter as we did? Learn everything you need to know about renting a scooter in Bali here.

How To Get Around Bali

Firstly, you’ll need to decide if you’re going to do your road trip around Bali in a car or on a scooter. The biggest thing to think about is accessibility. If you want to go off-road, life is much easier on a scooter but of course, a car is more comfortable.

✅  Good to know: It’s easy to rent a vehicle in Bali but you will need an international driving license.

Think About…

👉 Length of stay in each place 👉 Distance between each destination 👉 What budget will you have? 👉 What activities/attractions do you want to see? 👉 Consider your vehicle 👉 How much luggage will you have? One thing you will need is travel medical insurance . You should never travel without it, make sure you’re fully covered by using SafetyWing .

How Long Would It Take To Drive Around Bali?

Depending on how many stops you want to make on your Bali road trip and how long you want to stay in each place will determine how long it takes to drive around Bali.

You can drive from one end of Bali to the other in about 3 hours , which is what a lot of tour companies will offer if visiting areas like north Bali from say, Denpasar. These are long day trips but great if you’re short on time and want to explore more of Bali.

In theory, you can drive around Bali in a couple of days but the reality is, that would suck and be super tiring. For a road trip around Bali, you’ll be looking at 3 to 4 weeks to make it worthwhile. For me, 4 weeks was perfect as we got to see the best of Bali while spending a few nights at each destination without feeling rushed!

✔️ Best Bali Bike Rental: BIKAGO

If you want to rent a scooter in Bali as we did , you’re going to need a comfortable bike. We recommend BIKAGO , they are a popular Bali-based bike rental company.

Is Driving In Bali Easy?

One question we got asked a lot by friends and family when we returned to the UK was if driving in Bali is easy. For me, It was mostly easy (mostly being the keyword here) but I have a history of riding motorbikes, Jack, on the other hand, found it challenging at times.

With no prior experience with scooters, it was his first time riding them in Bali. But, he took to it well, and after a few near collisions and one rocky relationship with a rice field, by the time we left for our Bali road trip, he was a pro!

The main roads in Bali will have lots of potholes, however, most of the coastal ring road was smooth enough. Inland can be a problem for some and once you hit the mountains it’s a true adventure.

✅ Good to know: taking any detour down smaller roads is exciting, as you never know how that’s going to turn out… usually dirt tracks and gravel, which are not ideal for your two-wheeled friends – so take it easy if you find yourself on sandy paths.

Get ready for some bumpy roads on your road trip in Bali!

4-Week Bali Road Trip Itinerary

Stop 1: canggu.

Length Of Stay: 3 nights Accommodation Suggestion:  Frangipani House & Spa Good For: Party and surfing

Canggu is the trendiest part of Bali right now. It’s where you want to go to experience those wonderful sunsets and surfing vibes. It’s got a fun, laidback beach feels with a lot of western influence thrown into the mix.

It is great but chaotic. It’s a fun place to start your road trip in Bali to soak up some sunshine and get into the holiday spirit, but you won’t experience much of the beautiful Balinese culture in Canggu.

Day trips from Canggu are popular, but of course, you won’t need to do those, so kick-back, enjoy a cocktail and take it all in, the adventure starts on day 4!

Other Useful Information For Canggu

  • Travel Information: 40mins/12.2 km Denpasar to Canggu
  • Sightseeing: Tanah Lot temple (Check out 14 Best Tanah Lot Temple Tours In Bali 2023 ) , Berawa Beach, Batu Bolong Beach
  • Why Not ? Start your holiday with a surf lesson at one of Canggu’s trendiest beaches, before enjoying a sundowner and watching the sunset at Echo Beach.
  • Check out the Lawn and La Brisa for ocean-front lounging, and afterwards head to the Shady Fox for delicious cocktails.
  • For the best date night head to Behind the Green Door speakeasy or if it’s a lively pub you’re after check out the Black Sands Brewery for craft beer.
  • Be in the know, Penny Lane is the go-to spot atm!

Batu Bolong beach at sunset.

Stop 2: Medewi

Length Of Stay: 4 nights Accommodation: Medewi The Point   Good for: Surfers

Medewi is a small fishing village on the west coast of Bali around 70 km north of Canggu.

It’s really popular with surfers and especially beginner surfers (like Jack and me) as it has a beach break and decent waves. The area is small and unless surfing is your thing a few days there would be enough.

There’s some great sightseeing. One of my favourite waterfalls in Bali is there, there’s an enormous fig tree which is known as Bunut Bolong and an incredibly well-priced eco-lodge and spa resort to spend the day.

The food in Medewi (and Bali is very cheap ) with most dishes including juice around 50,000 IDR (£2.77) only!

Other Useful Information For Medewi

  • Travel Information: 1hr 40 mins from Canggu / 67.2 km
  • Sightseeing: Bunut Bolong Free Entrance, Juwuk Manis Waterfall, Dajuma Eco Lodge & Spa Resort
  • Places To Eat: Mal Malu, Nal’s Kitchen, Wake Wakey Coffee Shop, Kejcuk Restaurant

✅ I’ve searched but I can’t find this waterful to visit on a tour – even more reason to take a  Bali road trip! You Can Search For Other Waterfall Tours In Bali By Clicking Here . FYI Bali has AWESOME waterfalls!

Waterfalls in Bali, Terjun Juwuk Manis

Stop 3: Mt Ijen

Length Of Stay: 2 nights Accommodation:  Good for: Hikers and mountain lovers

Mt Ijen is an active volcano with a summit reaching 2,769 meters. It’s a fantastic volcanic climb and on good days the volcanic lake at the top alights with an electric blue fire!

The volcano is on the island of Java which is just next to Bali, so you will have to catch a ferry to reach it. You shouldn’t have any problems, sometimes rentals can be funny about taking a vehicle over to another island so just check that they are okay with this. You will need a copy of the insurance which your rental company will provide.

✅ Good to know: we didn’t check with our rental company before going and reached Java by ferry crossing at Gilimanuk port on the northwest tip of Bali. Luckily, we had no issues. It was straight onto the ferry and a thirty-minute crossing.

The park entrance is reachable by scooter, car, local bus or taxi and costs 100,000 IDR (£5.54) p/p since 2022. It takes about four hours to climb, mostly along a tarmac slope of a medium gradient.

Other Useful Information For Ijen

  • Travel information: (Pemuteran to Ijen) 2 hr 40 mins / 81 km. Follow the ring road East to Gilimanuk port. Catch the ferry over to Ketapang Harbour in Java.
  • Sightseeing: Jagir Waterfall, Mt Ijen Sunrise Hike
  • Places to eat: Warung Pondok Asri 2

✅ If you’re not up for the drive to Java then you could take a day tour to hike Ijen this 24h trip to Kawah Ijen & local Javanese breakfast , is similar to the one we did plus you get breakfast!

The top of Mt Ijen in all its beauty! It was one of our favourite stops on our road trip.

Stop 4: Pemuteran

Length Of Stay: 3 nights Accommodation: Angga Guesthouse (From £4 a night) Good For: Scuba Diving & Jungle Treks

Pemuteran is a large village in north Bali on the edge of West Bali National Park . The town is built up around scuba diving, snorkelling and national park treks with countless offices lining the main road.

This is a great place to go hiking and once off the main road, the trails into the mountains offer fantastic views. It’s also a good stop for a day trip to the beautiful Menjangan island, which shouldn’t be missed on your 4-week Bali itinerary!

To get the most out of this stop, explore both the mountain trails and the beach, along with a couple of dives at Menjangan and a trek around West Bali National Park.

We stumbled upon a turtle hatchery at one of the resorts which had managed to remain open during the pandemic! This was really nice and with a small donation, you can walk around the small sanctuary and view all the baby turtles.

While exploring Pemuteran during our road trip in Bali we found this random helicopter!

Hotel shoutout: We stayed at Angga Guesthouse which is secluded down a small farm lane among the fields with mountain views. We had the most authentic Indonesian breakfast there, which was delicious!

Other Useful Information For Pemuteran

  • Travel information: 1 hr 35 min / 82.2 km
  • Sightseeing: Pura Batu Kursi temple, Pemuteran beach, Turtle Hatchery, West Bali National Park, Menjangan Island
  • Places to eat: Kubuku Eco Dive & Restaurant, Rasta Warung

✅ Menjangan island has to be on your list if you’re heading North and it just has to be explored underwater, the coral reef is breathtaking. Try this Snorkeling & Trekking at West Bali National Park tour so you can hit both activities!

Exploring Pemuteran - road to temple: Rural Bali at its best! Make sure you stop there on your Bali road trip!

Stop 5: Lovina

Length Of Stay: 3 nights Accommodation: Lovina Loca   Good For: Nature Lovers

Lovina is a large fishing village on the north coast of Bali renowned for its beautiful beach, coral reefs and dolphin watching. It’s best if you stay close to or on the beach, this place should be great for travellers wanting to escape the fast-paced lifestyle of Canggu.

We actually didn’t have the best time in Lovina, but I blame the pandemic. Lovina seriously took a hit with the town almost deserted. I could see the potential which is why I’ve kept it in this 4-week Bali itinerary!

Something to think about: Dolphin tours are popular here but after some research we decided against a dolphin tour as they are not particularly ethical, boats chase the dolphins. You can make your own minds up.

Instead, fill your days exploring the beach and surrounding areas, this includes a visit to the Banjar Hot Springs . These are natural thermal pools tucked away into the jungle and are believed to cure ailments – it was a highlight of our road trip in Bali!

Banjar Hot Springs Lovina: I loved the warm waters at the Banjar Hot Springs in Lovina!

Other amazing places to be visited near Lovina include one of the highest waterfalls in Bali, Gitgit waterfall , and the largest Buddhist Monastery in Bali.

The monastery is overlooking the mountains with panoramic views of the ocean, it’s certainly worth a visit on your Bali road trip!

✅ Don’t miss out: book your north Bali attractions here , including waterfalls, temples and jungle treks!

Other Useful Information For Lovina

  • Travel information: 1 hr 20 mins / 47 km from Pemuteran
  • Sightseeing: Banjar Hot Springs , Aling Aling Waterfall , Gitgit Waterfall, Buddhist Monastery
  • Places To Eat: Georgian Restaurant, there’s also a large international supermarket to stock up at.

✅ Only have one day in the north of Bali? Try This North Bali Tour: Wanagiri Hills, Waterfall, Banjar Hot Spring and Buddhist Monastery!

Buddhist Monastery in Bali

Stop 6: Mt Batur / Kintamani

Length Of Stay: 2 nights Accommodation Suggestion: Black Lava Hostel & Lodge Good For: Hikers and mountain lovers

We actually went to Amed and then Kintamani (I’ve suggested Kintamani before Amed in this itinerary). For us, it was fun but long, mostly because we took a shortcut which ended up not being a shortcut! The road was so bad we had to turn back.

Luckily, we were directed to the correct road which took us up and over the mountains so high that we went into the clouds. We passed through farms, fields and villages and came out overlooking lake Batur.

One of the more exhilarating things you will do on your road trip in Bali is the ride downhill, it was rapid! I would recommend sticking exactly to the GPS and not trying any shortcuts though.

jakarta to bali road trip

Kintamani is a large town at the base of the volcano on the edge of Lake Batur, predominantly used for the farming of fresh vegetables and fruit.

It’s also used as a base for the Mt Batur trek with many tours operating out of the town. We managed to find a charming eco-friendly guesthouse very close to the start of one of the trails.

The hike was fantastic, a little harder than Mt Ijen (even though it’s smaller) but most definitely worth it! The panoramic views were magical, overlooking the entire village and lake with views of Mt Agung in the background.

Other Useful Information For Mt. Batur

  • Travel information: 1hr 40 mins / 59 km
  • Sightseeing : Mt Batur sunrise hike, Lake Batur, Volcanic rock garden
  • Places To Eat: We didn’t go to any restaurants except the small warung at our guesthouse. Which was very simple. (Fried chicken, noodles or rice)

✅ Maybe you’re interested in hiking Mount Batur too? If so, I’ve found this Mt Batur Sunrise Trekking with a Licensed Guide which is really similar to the one we did!

igoa-adventure, Mt Batur volcano view sunrise:At the summit of Mt. Batur during the sunrise hike, you can see Mt. Agung in the distance.

Stop 7: Amed

Length Of Stay: 4 nights Accommodation Suggestion: Soka Amed Beach Hotel Good For: Diving & Snorkelling

Amed is a fantastic rural village on the east coast of Bali. It’s popular for its brilliant dive sites such as the USS Liberty shipwreck , which many people visit for day dives but there is so much more to discover in Amed!

We stayed for a week in Amed , it being our favourite stop on the whole of our Bali road trip! That being said, your 4 nights are enough – we just wanted a few extra days of doing nothing!

Amed is surrounded by mountains with stunning views of Mt. Agung , the tallest volcano in Bali. The little village is really somewhere you can just fall off the face of the earth.

The area is incredible for snorkelling and swimming , and late-night beach walks and it’s close to one of Bali’s most popular temples – Pura Lempuyang otherwise known as Heaven’s Gate!

✅ Looking for where to stay in Amed ? We’ve got you covered with the Ultimate Amed Hotel Guide here , plus the 13 Best East Bali Day Tours 2023 (Temples, Beaches & More!)

Other Useful Information For Amed

  • Travel information: 2 hr 15 mins / 88 km from Lovina
  • Sightseeing: USS Liberty Shipwreck, Heaven’s Gate, Vienna Beach, Mountain walks
  • Places To Eat: See You Again Cafe, Green Leaf Cafe Amed, Chill Bar and Grill

✅ Not quite ready to scuba dive? The next best thing and something which is equally rewarding is snorkelling. If you’re heading to Amed check out this Amed Bali Snorkelling: Japanese Shipwreck & Vienna Beach – Full Day Tour.

Visiting Amed in Bali was a great way to stick to our Bali travel budget

Stop 8: Ubud

Length Of Stay: 5 nights Accommodation Suggestion: Wina Ubud b&b   Good for: Vegans and Yogis

The ride down was so easy and scenic. You will enjoy this part of your Bali road trip around the coast. You will need the extra days there! Ubud is perfect for a spiritual cleanse and re-balance.

While in Ubud make sure you visit Ubud market and Ubud Palace. We went on a nature walk around Kajeng Rice Fields which was great and Campuhan Ridge Walk ; explored waterfalls, ancient temples, and forests and ate at some amazing vegan restaurants.

Make sure you get breakfast included while your visiting Bali on a budget!

Hotel Shoutout: Once you’ve reached Ubud check into Wina Ubud B&B , we were so happy with our guesthouse, it was great and served a delicious breakfast.

Other Useful Information For Ubud

  • Travel Information : 53 mins / 37 km from Kintamani
  • Sightseeing: Popular attractions in Ubud include the famous Tegalalang Rice Terraces , Sacred Monkey Forest , Tukad Cepung Waterfall and Bali Swing . You can visit all these places on a Best of Ubud Day Tour !
  • Places To Eat: Sawobali, The Alchemy, Floyd Bar, Mumbai Station

✅ If you’re heading to Ubud and looking for a day tour, I’ve found this one which highlights the Best Of Ubud: Private Day Tour , which might be of interest to you!

Why is Bali so cheap Jack at a purification ceremony in Ubud under a waterfall

Stop 9: Uluwatu

Length Of Stay: 2 nights Accommodation Suggestion:  Bingin Bienvenue Guest House Good For: Relaxing and surfing

Your final stop, and the best place to end your road trip in Bali is Uluwatu . It’s famed for its cliff side beaches and sunset spots which look out to sea. Check out the traditional Kecak sunset fire dance at Uluwatu temple !

For your final day head to one of the secluded beaches, which are fantastic and fun to get to. Bingin beach and Nungglan were two of my favourites. Afterwards, head to Ulu Cliffhouse where you can sit on some comfy bean bags and watch the sunset on your final day.

Other Useful Information For Uluwatu

  • Travel information:  1.40min/53 km from Ubud
  • Sightseeing:   Uluwatu temple , Uluwatu sunsets, Bingin beach, Nunggalan beach , Jimbaran seafood market
  • Places To Eat: Ulu Cliffhouse

Some of the best-secluded beaches can be found in Uluwatu like Nunggalan beach.

More Options For Your Road Trip In Bali

Some other places in Bali that we didn’t visit which you might want to add to your road trip include Munduk , Sunar and Nusa Lembongan & Nusa Penida .

How To Get To Bali?

The easiest way to get to Bali is to fly directly into Bali’s international airport. It’s now possible to fly from London to Bali directly. Most major airlines, if not flying direct, will change in places like Bangkok, Singapore or Dubai.

Another way is to fly into Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, and arrange for an internal flight to Bali. There are numerous flights leaving from Jarkarta to Bali daily and in some instances, this can work out cheaper than flying direct to Bali.

If you’re already in Indonesia, it’s easy to catch internal flights to Bali from any national airport. Another way is to drive to Bali, Bali has a decent enough network of ferries to get you across the islands, you could even take a road trip through Indonesia visiting countless islands, temples and magical sites dotted throughout Indonesia!

What Month Is Best To Visit Bali?

Most people will visit Bali during the dry season which runs from April to September. August is Bali’s driest month and if you’re in search of the perfect beach holiday then this is the best month to visit Bali, however, it’s also the busiest.

May and September are less crowded and also great times to visit Bali as it’s still warm and sunny. The wet season falls between October and March and although it rains almost every day in the middle of the rainy season, it is rare to see rain all day, every day. Instead, you can expect short bursts in the morning.

For a budget-friendly visit to Bali , consider going during October or March, these months are known as shoulder months. Prices of tours and accommodations generally decrease during the wet season however the shoulder months can still be relatively dry and sunny!

How Many Days In Bali Is Enough?

If it’s a road trip in Bali that you’re looking to do then most people would agree it’s possible to do 2 weeks of touring to enjoy popular sites. However, to really experience Bali’s culture and heritage give yourself those extra two weeks! 4 weeks in Bali is the perfect amount of time to soak up the best of Bali and say you’ve seen it all.

Conclusion: Road Trip In Bali, 4-Week Itinerary

I hope by now you are super excited about taking a road trip in Bali and that this itinerary has been useful. There will always be changes to make to any suggested itinerary but from experience, this Bali route really was wonderful.

We got to see the other side of Bali that holiday-goers don’t generally get to see, meet locals and do activities which we could have only dreamed of. Once you get out of the tourist hubs, the island of Gods is truly a magical and spiritual place.

My favourite of all our stops was Amed. Whatever you do, don’t miss out on Amed, here are 21 fantastic things to do in Amed for when you visit!

Java Roadtrip

From Jakarta to Bali by Car

1500 kilometres, 10 different cities: It’s an unforgettable adventure to do a Java Roadtrip and go by car from Jakarta to Bali. There is no better way to understand the authentic side and mentality of Indonesia.

©Rebecca Schmitt

On one side you will need a good preparation, strong nerves and patience but on the other side you will see spectacular landscapes, the daily live of Indonesian people, the diversity of this country and great hotels on Java. It’s less romantic than doing a Bali roadtrip but for everyone who wants to see the real Indonesia, we recommend the Java roadtrip. We did this trip between 25th December 2017 and 2nd January 2018 and recommend the following route.

Ricefield on the Route between Pekalongan and Borobudur ©Rebecca Schmitt

Travel Preparation for the Java Roadtrip:

It’s the best to request the rental car in advance via email at Avis or another international rental car company. No need, to book and pay the car in advance. You can do this in Jakarta when they deliver your car directly to your hotel. Please ask also for the “kartu jalan tol”. It enables you to use the automatic payment lane and saves you time. You can charge it at all rest stations. For our route you need around 350.000 IDR on your card.

Moreover a small car is a big advantage on Indonesian streets considering the narrow streets and bad traffic conditions. We booked an Toyota Avanza and it was the perfect size for two people plus four big peaces of luggage and additional hand luggage. A must have for the navigation is the google maps app on your phone. A local sim card and also an usb cable for charging or as an alternative a powerbank might be a good thing.

Day 1: Jakarta

Our adventure starts in Jakarta. It will take us one week to reach our final target Bali. Different airlines serve the route to Jakarta and it’s not challenging to find a flight connection. Arrived in Jakarta, we go via the Blacklane driving service to the Fairmont Jakarta ( see also alternatives ).

Gedung Gede ©Rebecca Schmitt

It’s surprising in respect of the size of the city but there are only very few sightseeing hotspots in Jakarta which can be easily visited in one to two days. For example the minimalistic National Museum placed at Mardeka Square (“mardeka” means independence), the government building “Gedung Gede”, the Indonesian National Museum and when you have more time, you should visit the “Thousand Islands” outside the city.

National Monumen ©Rebecca Schmitt

Day 2: Jakarta – Bandung

150km 2h 30min.

You should calculate one hour by car to leave Jakarta because the traffic is really bad. Luckily, there is a highway to Bandung and in around three hours you will arrive in Indonesia’s third largest city Bandung. Moreover it’s the capital city of Barat Java/ West Java and it’s also called the “Paris of Indonesia” because there are still beautiful old houses from the Dutch occupation period left in the city centre. You shouldn’t expect too much culture and beauty but it’s definetely a must do including the administration building “Gedung Sate”. The best hotel in Bandung is the traditional five-star Padma Hotel . As an alternative you can consider the business targeted Hilton Hotel, too.

On the way to Bandung you see rice field after rice field and we did a side trip to Purwakarta to see the water reservoir “Jatiluhur Dam”. It’s a good place for a nice view of Mount “Burangrang”. Honestly we thought it would be more spectacular and we wouldn’t give a real recommendation for this time intense side trip. Our picture gives you an idea of what to see.

Jatiluhur Dam ©Rebecca Schmitt

Day 3: Bandung – Pekalongan

300km 5h 20min.

On the way from Bandung to Pekalongan you shouldn’t miss the only drive-in vulcano, Indonesia’s Tangkuban Perahu next to Cikahuripan and Lembang in the Regency of West Bandung. It’s 90 minutes away from Bandung and highly recommended during week-days. On weekends and holidays the place is very crowded and you will experience traffic jam on top of the mountain and even before. Don’t be surprised to pay ten times more for your entrance fee in comparison with domestic visitors. In 2017 the fee is 300.000 IDR per person and 35.000 IDR for your car but the stunning view is simply great.

Tangkuban Perahu ©Rebecca Schmitt

On the way down you will also pass some typical tea platations. Passing Cirebon, you can stop at Gua Sunyaragi to see a mysterious building in the shape of a cave. In earlier times the building was part of a recreation temple of the sultan of Cirebon. In case you have enough time, you should have a look.

Tea Plantations ©Rebecca Schmitt

We stayed one night in the Santika Hotel in Cirebon but we cannot recommend it because it’s a thirty years old building missing modern standards. Moreover you will here the sleepless chanting of the muezzin in the night and in the morning. Earplugs needed! We would recommend you to go to the city of Pakalongan to stay there for the night, even when the highway only goes until Brebes. In 2018 the highway to Pekalongan might be extended. The Santika Hotel in Pekalongan belongs to the same Indonesian hotel chain like the Santika in Cirebon but it’s newer and more modern.

Day 4: Pekalongan – Borobudur

150km 4h 20min.

On our fourth day of the Java Roadtrip we did a four hour and twenty minutes drive to go to Borobudur. Based on the fact that there are no highways at all you can expect an exhausting day and you really need to be careful on the streets. The challenge of driving in Indonesia is mainly based on the different speed levels on the street in respect of motor bikes, trucks, cars, rikschaws, buses, bikes, horses, and people walking in between.

In Borobudur we want to highlight the unique hillside resort “ Villa Borobudur ” with the environment of a traditional Indonesian palace overlooking the valley of Borobudur.

Villa Borobudur Resort ©Rebecca Schmitt

As an alternative you should consider the Amanjiwo , the Plateran or the Plateran Heritage Resort . The best time to visit the Borobudur temple is in the very early morning to watch the sunrise or in the late afternoon to see the sunset. During the day it’s a super crowded place and moreover you will ask for shadow.

Borobudur Temple ©Rebecca Schmitt

Day 5: Borobudur – Yogyakarta

42km 1h 30min.

The Villa Borobudur Resort is really like in a fairy tale. So we decided to stay another night at this gorgeous place. In the morning we visited the beautiful Borobudur temple. It’s very impressive and offers some phantastical views. No way to skip this – it’s a must see.

City Centre Yogyakarta ©Rebecca Schmitt

In the afternoon we drove to Yogyakarta because we expected to see something like the cultural heart of Java. It’s true: The city is very young and has an old city centre linked to the period of occupation by the Dutch but everything else in this city looks pretty much the same like other Indonesian cities. As you notice, we were not really convinced and we hesitate to recommend the city walk to you because there is simply too much traffic jam in comparison with the few cultural highlights.

Street scene Yogyakarta ©Rebecca Schmitt

Day 6: Borobudur – Solo

110km 2h 30min.

On a Friday we go from Borobudur to Klaten to see the famous Hinduistic Prambanan Temple. For the distance you should calculate around one hour and thirty minutes. It’s a similar experience to Borobudur: Very crowded and for foreigners the ticket price is 337.500 IDR. Included is a bottle of water as a welcome drink and a nice and air-conditioned lobby plus toilets in Western standard. I mention this because it’s not something you experience everywhere. The temple itelf is really impressive and beautiful and definitely a must see in Java. You will enjoy it.

Prambanan Temple Klaten ©Rebecca Schmitt

Afterwards we continue our trip to Surakarta that is also known as Solo. It’s only one hour by car to the Alila Solo that overtops all other buildings of the city. You can trust us, there is no alternative in respect of lifestyle, exclusivity and wow factor in Solo. Moreover they have delicious Pretzels in the Alila Solo – just happy 🙂

Pretzel found in the Alila Solo ©Rebecca Schmitt

Day 7: Solo – Madiun

100km 2h 50min.

100 km for day 7 of the Java roadtrip is not too much. In respect of the fact that there are no super high-end hotel options in Madiun, you should enjoy the morning in the Alila Solo . Relax next to the pool and start your drive in the afternoon.

Alila Solo ©Alila

You can take the route via Gunung Lawu to see the foggy highlands where strawberries and other berries grow. Within three hours you are in Madiun. We stayed in the Aston Hotel. It’s the best hotel in that region but nothing special. You can try to drive further to Surabaya but for us it seem too exhausting for one day.

Street scene ©Rebecca Schmitt

Day 8: Madiun – Surabaya

160km 3h 30min.

It’s already day 8 of our Java roadtrip and the hotel in Madiun is a good reason to wake up early to drive to Surabaya. It’s the last day of 2017, a Sunday morning, and the streets are less crowded. Moreover the highway for the last hour of driving to Surabaya is empty enough to speed up to 120km/h – just happy once again. On the way there are no sightseeing highlights and we decide to spend the afternoon in the pool area of the Shangri-la hotel Surabaya .

Scenic view Central Java ©Rebecca Schmitt

Day 9: Surabaya – Banyuwangi

Happy New Year or “Selamat tahun baru”! One thing you should consider in Indonesia: People get early tired and go early to bed, too. New Year is a real challenge for Indonesians and you cannot expect everyone staying awake until midnight. Even ourselves. We feel very Indonesian 🙂

Selling onions next to the street ©Rebecca Schmitt

At ten in the morning we start our drive to Banyuwangi. Google Maps promised six hours and a half but this estimation is based on terrifique traffic conditions. Actually we needed two hours longer. Only the first hour is on a highway. Later you go on small streets which are incredibly crowded. Moreover Google Maps gives you smart recommendations for shorter routes but please never accept! After accepting it we ended up in the jungle on a muddy countryroad. You are just very happy when it’s over and you never know in advance if your car will rock it or not.

The last kilometers to Banyuwangi are next to the beach but there are not too many options to see the beach because of villages and jungle plants. The “Wisata”/ Sightseeing places are not the same from a Western view: Too many people asking you to join their selfies, too much food, too much packaging waste.

Beach in East Java ©Rebecca Schmitt

After a long day of driving we arrive in Banyuwangi at Bangsring Breeze Resort , a beautiful hidden place on the hills with a comfy and traditional Indonesian atmosphere and a great Indonesian cuisine. The Indonesian Curry is simply unforgettable. The resort is only a 20 minutes drive away from the ferry.

Time to check the mileage status on the ferry ©Rebecca Schmitt

Day 10: Banyuwangi – Menjangan (Bali)

37km 1h 20min.

20 mins to the ferry and another half an hour on the ferry, than you are in North Bali. It’s really close to Java.

On the ferry – no way to leave your car ©Rebecca Schmitt

We went straight to The Menjangan , Bali’s largest resort in respect of area because it’s located in the West Bali National Park. A new neighbour of this resort is the Plataran Menjangan . The park is home to wildlife animals like the unique Balinese deer. For us it’s a great place to relax after our Java roadtrip and before we go another 150 km to Seminyak in South Bali, where we return our rental car to Avis.

Is it relaxing to do this roadtrip? No, definitely not. Is it adventurous? Absolutely and it’s a really unique way to experience the true side of Indonesia. We would recommend this roadtrip to passionated Indonesian travellers, balanced couples who know each other longer than six months or good friends with a strong passion for adventure and cars.

Arrived in North Bali, enjoying empty streets ©Rebecca Schmitt

All You Need To Know For Planning A Budget-Friendly Indonesia Trip

Planning A Budget-Friendly Indonesia Trip

Indonesia offers many enchanting wonders , from the lush jungles of Bali to the vibrant streets of Jakarta. If getting good value for your money when travelling abroad is an important factor, Indonesia is one of the most attractive options . At the time of writing, INR 1 equals IDR 193, meaning Indians can enjoy more spending power in Indonesia.

According to Numbeo, a cost of living database that collects data from around the world, a three-course meal for two in a mid-range restaurant in Indonesia would cost around INR 1,298. In addition, a bottle of local beer at a bar would be around INR 150 to 200, and a regular cappuccino would cost you about INR 160. Here's a look at all you need to know before visiting Indonesia.

Top Attractions

Explore ancient temples in Prambanan and the world's biggest Buddhist sanctuary, Borobudur. Witness rare coral species in the Raja Ampat Islands and incredible marine life in the Nusa Islands. Hike through rainforests and rice paddy fields in Ubud and admire Dutch colonial architecture in Belitung. And it's all very pocket friendly. At the Bali Safari and Marine Park, encounter about 400 wildlife species and enjoy the adventure for around INR 4,000. Embark on a night trek to Mount Batur, an active volcano, for an unforgettable sunrise experience for around INR 2,000. Book a whitewater rafting trip on the Ayung River in Ubud for an exhilarating adventure for around INR 3,500.

The tourist visa is valid for a period of 90 days, and you can stay in the country for a maximum of 60 days. As an Indian citizen, you can obtain an e-visa or Visa on Arrival (VoA). Indian citizens are eligible for a 30-day visa on arrival, which can be extended for an additional 30 days. The fee for the visa is INR 2,601.

The designated currency in Indonesia is the rupiah. As per the current present exchange rates, INR 1 equals IDR 193. While debit and credit cards are common, carry cash to avoid foreign exchange markups.

Several low-cost carriers connect major Indian cities to Jakarta and Denpasar. A round-trip fare typically amounts to INR 40,000 or less, even during the peak season, especially if booked a month in advance.

Accommodation

Indonesia has a variety of accommodations to fit different budgets, including luxury resorts, budget-friendly hostels, homestays, and couchsurfing options. You can share a dorm in a hostel for as little as INR 473, or you can opt for a private room that will cost you approximately INR 2,000 per night. If travelling in bigger groups, Airbnb offers the most value for price, as several come with plunge pools and great views.

Local Travel

Travelling in Indonesia is both easy and convenient. Traditional modes of transport include becaks and bemos. Becaks are a combination of a bicycle and rickshaw that can carry up to two people, while bemos are small buses that can accommodate up to ten people. The rates for these modes of transport are usually fixed and affordable. If you're looking to explore Sumatra or Java islands, trains are a great way to do so since they are as quick as buses but cheaper and more comfortable. If you want to travel from one island to another, boats are the best option. You can board a ferry or a speedboat, depending on the route.

Indians can enjoy more spending power while dining out in Indonesia. A meal for two at a mid-range restaurant would cost approximately INR 780 and can go up to INR 2,000. Eating at warungs or small kiosks/streetside stalls is a great way to save money on food, as a plate would typically cost INR 150.

Pick up high-quality coffee, especially the native kopi luwak variant, costing INR 300 per packet. The country is also renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship. The Batik fabrics start from around INR 800 per metre. Visit the village of Tegallalang, a short drive north of Ubud central, for intricately stylised Balinese wooden carvings of the Garuda, costing around INR 800. Also, buy local spices like Balinese vanilla and sea salts.

Best Time To Visit

For the western and central Indonesian islands (such as Bali, Java, the Gilis, Lombok, and Komodo), the best time to visit is during the dry season, which spans from May to September. The wet season is between October and April, with rainfall occurring in short, heavy bursts. On the other hand, the eastern islands, such as Sulawesi, West Papua, Raja Ampat, and the Moluccas Islands, have different peak seasons, mostly between March and May and again in October.

Road trip Jakarta Bali

road trip jakarta bali - mitsubishi xpander

Total Biaya Road Trip Jakarta Bali Pulang Pergi (PP)

Road trip Jakarta Bali

Biaya road trip jakarta bali pulang pergi mencapai Rp 4,55 jutaan

Hanya saja memang waktu tempuhnya cukup lama. Dari Jakarta ke Bali saja butuh 20 jam. Maka ditambah perjalanan pulang jadi total 40 jam.

Published On 24 Jul 2024

Rincian Biaya Tol Jakarta-Lombok

  • Tol Outer Ring Road Rp17.000
  • Tol Jakarta-Cikampek (Japek): Rp27.500
  • Tol Cikopo-Palimanan (Cipali): Rp119.000
  • Tol Palimanan-Kanci (Palikanci): Rp13.500
  • Tol Kanci-Pejagan: Rp31.500
  • Tol Pejagan-Pemalang: Rp60.000
  • Tol Pemalang-Batang: Rp53.000
  • Tol Batang-Semarang: Rp111.500
  • Tol Semarang ABC: Rp5.000
  • Tol Semarang-Solo: Rp92.000
  • Tol Solo-Ngawi: Rp131.000
  • Tol Ngawi-Kertosono: Rp98.000
  • Tol Kertosono-Mojokerto: Rp50.000
  • Tol Mojokerto-Surabaya: Rp39.000
  • Tol Surabaya-Gempol Rp27.500
  • Tol Gempol-Pasuruan Rp46.500
  • Tor Pasuruan-Probolinggo Timur Rp30.000

Estimasi Bensin Road Trip Jakarta - Lombok

2. Konsumsi dan Bensin

Konsumsi BBM tentu berbeda-beda.

  • Total jarak: 1.208 km
  • Konsumsi bensin: 1 liter per 10 km
  • Total bensin yang diperlukan: 1.208km/10 km/liter= 120,8 liter atau 121 liter.

Estimasi total biaya bensin: 121 liter x Rp12.950/liter = Rp1.566.950.

  • Durasi menginap: Misalnya 4 malam

Total biaya penginapan= 4 malam x Rp500.000= Rp2.000.000

Total Perkiraan Biaya Road Trip Jakarta - Lombok

(Foto: Istimewa)

Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)

Light rail transit (lrt).

Bali to start LRT development in September

ali is expected to begin construction of underground tunnels and tracks for its light rail transit (LRT) system this September, paving the way for the island’s first rail-based public transit system.

The project is part of the so-called Bali Urban Railway development plan, which will also include supporting infrastructure such as telecommunications, electricity, drinking water, waste and sewage management and the transportation-oriented developments.

“As planned, the groundbreaking will take place in September and it will include four development phases,” I Gusti Ngurah “Ari Askhara” Askhara Danadiputra said on Wednesday, as quoted from Antara.

Ari Askhara is the president director of PT Sarana Bali Dwipa Jaya (SBDJ), which was appointed by the Bali administration to manage the Bali Urban Railway development project.
