Become an Activated Disciple!

The theme of this pilgrimage is the “Activated Disciple.” It was on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee that Jesus called the first disciples, but what does that mean for us? On the pilgrimage Jeff will teach us about Jesus, the rabbi, and how disciples were chosen in the 1st century. Jeff will describe the life of a disciple 2000 years ago, and then demonstrate how that can become a reality for people today. Fr. Mike’s homilies will encourage and challenge us to be an “Activated Disciple” who walks with God in the modern world. Our prayer is that young people will hear God’s call on their life and take that step to follow Jesus. Please join us for this life-changing journey in the footsteps of Jesus, the Apostles and the Blessed Mother.

We are in the Old City of Jerusalem today. Our day starts with Mass, followed by a visit to the Davidson Center to sit on the steps to the Temple Mount that Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the Apostles would have walked. Hear inspiring teaching by Jeff. Following our visit to the Western Wall, to tuck a prayer into the ancient wall, enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure to enjoy lunch and explore the Holy City. Tonight, we meet for the farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Jerusalem. (B.Special dinner)

This morning, depart early for the Holy City. We pray the Stations of the Cross as we walk along the Via Dolorosa, ending with our visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where we venerate the place of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. The rest of the day, including lunch, is at leisure to explore on your own, enjoy local food places, and do some last-minute shopping and packing before departing either tonight or early tomorrow morning for Tel Aviv airport and your flights home. Your final documents will provide recommendations of things to do and local restaurants. You can choose to stay in the old city for dinner on your own or return to your hotel for included dinner. A deposit of $750.00 per person and a copy of your passport picture page should be sent immediately. Final payment is due by February 23, 2024. A late payment fee of $100 will be charged per person for all payments received after the final payment date. Your passport must be valid through December 4, 2024. Reservations will not be processed until we have passport copies. Prices quoted are based on payments by check. Prices: $4,895.00 for land only (air not included); $1,100.00-$1,600.00 for group air; $5,995.00-$6,495.00 for land and air; $1,495.00 for solo traveler, additional cost, (in room by yourself). A non-refundable 4% credit card convenience fee applies to all credit card transactions.

Each day, early in the morning on this Holy Land Pilgrimage we were off and running. The driver of the van was a very safe and considerate driver who not only ensured that we arrived at all our assigned destinations on time, but he also ensured that there was plenty of water for all of us to drink as the weather was very hot and we needed to constantly hydrate our bodies. All Holy Site visits were well-planned, and our tour guide was well known by the guards and site coordinators and several occasions we were even granted head of line privileges.

Every day of our journey was fruitful and fulfilling and we were given the opportunity to visit and spend ample time at each site identified in the Catholic Journey Pilgrimage Brochure. In fact, we even visited some sites that were not scheduled and not offered in the itinerary. Confession and spiritual direction were announced as available and was provided as requested and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was celebrated each day with the group. Every morning, on the tour motor coach, I led a recitation of The Holy Rosary or the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Everybody joined in and I’m sure that our pilgrimage was blessed and especially protected by the Blessed Virgin Mother of God because during this pilgrimage, I was hit from behind by an electric motor bike. However, I was not seriously hurt and there were no injuries to the operator of the electric motor bike.

On the last day of the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, we went to the Via Dolorosa, and I led stations of the cross all the way to Golgotha where I was privileged to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

This Holy Land Pilgrimage was a dream come true for me because when I was ordained to the presbyterate, I was scheduled to go to the Holy Land This trip was on my bucket list of things I wanted to do and an answer to my prayer. Due to our very close group interaction and relationships, we developed with each other, we now have new spiritual families (members of our pilgrimage group). Each of the nine members of our group have called or texted me and each other and assured us of their prayers & support.

Words cannot express my gratitude to Catholic Journeys for giving me this great opportunity to go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land as group Spiritual Director. We went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land on 9/17 and returned 9/26. We celebrated our 30th Anniversary first by renewing our vows in Cana and spending last full day on our actual Anniversary with a special Mass at Golgotha and a visit to the Tomb.

Our guide was an extraordinary mix of historian, geography, religion and Shepherd! He kept us all safe and taken care of whatever we needed.

The pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land was wonderful and David, our guide, was fantastic. I was amazed at his knowledge and wish I could have recorded the entire trip. Our pilgrimage to the Holy Land was amazing. Everything was perfect from the time we were picked up at the airport until the day we departed. We had the best tour guide David. I felt blessed each day by his vast amount of knowledge. We were able to gain access to the most beautiful basilicas and had Mass each day. I felt very cared for and safe the entire pilgrimage. Pilgrims in the Holy Land

For Jeff Cavins, an American Catholic, author, and biblical scholar “A pilgrimage is not a tour, it is not a vacation, it’s an opportunity to walk with someone, and that someone is Jesus, and when you walk with Jesus, your life will be transformed.”

For more than 20 years, Amiel has had the privilege of working with Jeff & Emily Cavins, public figures and hosts of pilgrimages to the Holy Land. In these special journeys, our goal is to create and deliver an authentic pilgrimage experience as if it took place somewhat 2,000 years ago here in the Holy Land, following the steps of Jesus, Mary, and the disciples.

Our most recent pilgrimage featured here took place in January 2023.

Upon arrival to the Holy Land, 250 pilgrims joined for group mass followed by a lovely welcome dinner. There was great excitement in the room, as for most this was a first visit to the Holy Land and they were about to embark on a life changing experience.

In 13 days, the group was shepherded by the amazing and well-educated tour guide Mr. Roni Winter from Amiel, following the footsteps of Jesus, traveling north from Caesarea Maritima to Mt. Carmel and then to the Galilee visiting Megiddo and Magdala. We visited Mt. Precipice, Nazareth, Mt. of Beatitudes, Caesarea Philippi, Tel Dan and the Dead Sea and then dedicated the second week to Jerusalem and its surroundings.

Throughout the pilgrimage, the stories of the bible came to life, walking where Jesus walked, taught and performed miracles. The group joined in mass and teachings at inspiring locations and connected with the passion of Christ in a series of events including the renewal of vows in Cana, an unforgettable biblical life experience in Kfar Kedem where we made olive oil and feed goats dressed in costume, a ride on an ancient boat replica on the Sea of Galilee and more.

Although most pilgrimages visit the same sights, no pilgrimage is like the other. Each journey is created to fit character and needs of the specific group, making it special, unique and unforgettable.

With a 250-people group, logistics can be challenging. To deliver an unforgettable experience, we traveled in three well equipped tour buses which took our pilgrims from one location to another. We coordinated site visits to avoid large crowds, allowing our pilgrims enjoy a complete experience. We selected special locations for teaching and prayer, and carefully planned logistics to deliver a smooth and hassle-free experience.

Accommodations were selected to enhance the experience and to give our pilgrims a home away from home feeling. To this end, we stayed in two wonderful hotels, one in the north, the other in Jerusalem and made them our base. Much attention was also given to meals, with traditional local food served in many places.

Thoughts on Israel and Gaza

After witnessing the violence in Israel firsthand, Jeff Cavins offers his insights on the war between Israel and Hamas. Jeff acknowledges the fear and anger that people are feeling in response to these horrific events. He offers insight and advice on how we can respond like Christians.

1. I love the Gospel. It truly is the good news.

• “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). 
• “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another” (John 13:34).
• “I, therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph 4:1-3).
• “So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Cor 13:13).
• “And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them” (Luke 6:31).

2. The battle behind the scenes, principalities…

• “He disarmed the principalities and powers and made a public example of them, triumphing over them in him”(Col. 2:15).

3. A Spiritual “Iron Dome.” 

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the devil’s wiles. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that utterance may be given me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak” (Eph 6:10-20).

“We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God and take every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Cor 10:5).

4. Be horrified by the killing of babies.

Take a look at ourselves. Why would you not be as horrified about abortion as we are about the killing of babies in Israel and Gaza?

5. Talk to your children if they are aware of what is happening. 

Contrast the ways of the enemy with the ways of Jesus!

“And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart, and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates”(Deut 6:6-9).
