justin bieber, purpose tour, 2016

That at 22, Justin Bieber is the center of polemic debates about his style is something of a surprise. He’s not revealing giant swaths of skin, donning outrageous meat-covered coats, or even flaunting particularly controversial slogans across his shirts. Instead, he has a penchant for tees that nearly scrape his knees, exaggerated layering, and skater boy clothes — not exactly tabloid fodder.

Yet even so, he’s drawn considerable attention (and backlash) for more recent looks, like the Nirvana band T-shirt by L.A. brand Fear of God that he wore to the American Music Awards late last year. Critics were scathing: the reigning prince of pop dares to be associated with the storied grunge band?

Justin Bieber’s Stylist Talks About His Nirvana T-Shirts (Which Courtney Love Doesn’t Mind)

Trending on Billboard

Longtime stylist Karla Welch, who first signed on to work with Bieber on his Believe Tour in 2012, has an explanation for all the hoopla: It’s a testament to the singer’s growing style influence. “He’s been pushing men’s fashion for the last five years,” she says. “If you look at the beginning of the Believe Tour, he was getting heat for the drop-crotch pants and super long T-shirts. But now, if you go to any menswear store, you see those styles reflected.” Much like Bieber, Welch doesn’t “care about negative feedback,” she says. “Haters gonna hate.”

Despite the Nirvana controversy, Welch went back to Fear of God and worked with the designer Jerry Lorenzo on five looks for Bieber’s current Purpose Tour, which kicked off Wednesday night (March 9) in Seattle. “We have been buying [Jerry’s] stuff for the last two years; it’s been a very fun process working [together],” Welch says of the custom-made denim and tees. Interspersed will be Raf Simons pieces (“Justin has been very into Raf lately”), Adidas shoes, and some custom-made Bieber staples, like thigh-skimming T-shirts for layering. “I could see the looks changing from concert to concert with the way Justin chooses to style them,” Welch adds.

Though certain technical adjustments have been made to the tour wardrobe, including zippers, gussets and reinforcements for quick changes (he has less than one minute to change backstage), the look is not so different than what the singer sports regularly on Instagram. “It’s more street grunge with a very vintage skater feel,” Welch describes. “I was living in Vancouver during the grunge era — I used to go down to Seattle to watch Pearl Jam play — and I always loved how those stoner boys looked. That’s what we started doing with the Purpose videos and now with the tour. It’s very undone.” The show’s backup dancers, who channel a similarly relaxed aesthetic, are outfitted in apparel by Calvin Klein, with whom Bieber has an ongoing campaign deal with.

Raised in Powell River, British Columbia, Canadian heritage has been an asset for Welch from the start. “We just met and clicked,” the stylist says of Bieber, who grew up in Stratford, Ontario. “Canadians inherently love Canadians; that’s always been a bond. Canadians are super nationalists,” she adds, chuckling.

Though Welch is normally tending to the red-carpet wardrobes of universally adored actresses like Amy Poehler and Olivia Wilde, she says there were no hesitations about taking on a more controversial pop star as a client. “If you listen to everything the press has to say, you’re losing at life,” she says, noting that now more than ever the two have a “100 percent collaborative” relationship. “Justin enjoys the process.”

Along with Raf Simons and Fear of God, the brands he currently digs include Rick Owens, Saint Laurent, the L.A. label Amiri and skate brands like Supreme and Vans. The two stay in touch about the things that are catching his eye — he might email her about a cool London T-shirt brand he just discovered and she might convince him to clean up in a sleek designer suit, like the Saint Laurent one he wore for the recent Grammy Awards. Says Welch: “His approach to fashion has evolved the way his music has evolved: The approach is more chill, but he does take super fun risks.”

Go Backstage to See Justin Bieber's Custom Wardrobe for His Purpose World Tour

Should you find yourself holding tickets to see Justin Bieber in concert during his Purpose tour, do us a solid and pay attention to whatever he's wearing, 'k? While male artists tend not to generate the same buzz over their looks as the ladies, Justin evidently spent time on the fashion aspect of the production, working alongside stylist Karla Welch and assembling a collection from both established and under-the-radar designers.

"Justin is extremely hands-on when it comes to fashion and was an excellent collaborator when it came to outfitting this tour. Through our work together he's developed such an incredible eye for quality pieces and knows what he likes," Karla said. The onstage looks include five custom ensembles from Jerry Lorenzo's Fear of God and additional pieces from Raf Simons and Supreme (plus Adidas Yeezy kicks). See everything carefully arranged backstage here , including so. much. plaid. and organizing tabs marked, curiously, with heart doodles.

Similar to what we learned when talking to costume designer Marina Toybina about her experience with Carrie Underwood , future tour cities will see the Biebs putting stuff together in different ways. "We are really pleased with everything, but I can definitely see the looks changing from concert to concert with the way Justin chooses to style them," Welch explained. And while the untrained eye might dismiss the items with a wave ( "what? old concert tees and beat-up denim?" ), rest assured that it's likely all pretty pricey. The Marilyn Manson-accented kilt retails for $695 , while a previous Fear of God Nirvana tee the singer wore cost $1,500. That said, there's good news for Bieber fashion fans: The label is releasing a collection at PacSun starting early next month.

What you won't see making an appearance onstage any time soon? The misspelled concert tees , resulting in some embarrassing publicity and recalled product.

You’ll Finally Be Able to Afford Justin Bieber’s Purpose Tour Merch

justin bieber purpose tour roupas

There's no doubt Justin Bieber’s recent capsule collection for Barneys made waves. And while we're all about the Jerry Lorenzo–designed flannels and graphic hoodies, the lineup wasn't, well, democratic in its reach. After all, not every Belieber or ironic fan of the "Sorry" singer has $1,675 to drop on a Purpose Tour logo leather jacket. But it looks like the pop star's next collaboration is going to fix that. It was announced that Bieber and Co. have teamed up with Urban Outfitters to celebrate the international leg of said Purpose Tour with a collection of hoodies, trucker hats, baseball jerseys, coach’s jackets, and short- and long-sleeved T-shirts that continue the logo-happy thread of the tour's other clothing designs.

Merch fans might recall when Kanye West teamed up with PacSun on a drop of Wes Lang Yeezus T-shirts , and the combo of in-demand pieces and mass-market distribution proved wildly successful (the tees sold out in a day). We're thinking Bieber's goods, which will launch in all Urban Outfitters stores this Friday, August 5, and online next Monday, August 8, have similar sellout potential (they range in price from $35 to $99). UO will be hosting public events in New York, Los Angeles, and London on August 5 from 6 to 8 P.M. in each city’s respective time zone. The events will feature live music, giveaways, and general pandemonium (just guessing).

The Justin Bieber Purpose Tour collection

BIEBER FEVER: Urban Outfitters has announced the launch of its  Justin Bieber “Purpose” tour collection on Aug. 5.

Inspired by the singer’s most recent world tour, the men’s wear collection consists of five pieces, including T-shirts, a baseball cap and a bomber jacket all featuring the tour logo. Prices range between 25 pounds, or $35 at current exchange, for a cap to 69 pounds, or $89, for the jacket.

The line will be available to purchase in all Urban Outfitters retail stores and online as of Aug. 8. There will also be accompanying events to celebrate the launch, with the retailer planning to host parties that will be open to the public and include live DJ sets and exclusive giveaways of pieces signed by Bieber.

The events will take place in the Urban Outfitters’ Marble Arch store in London, in its Melrose store in Los Angeles and in Herald Square in New York.

The high street retailer said it is drawing on the success that musicians have been having in fashion recently. Merchandise from Kanye West’s “The Life of Pablo” tour and Beyoncé’s “Formation” tour instantly sold out, for instance.

Earlier this year, VFiles, the Millennial-minded social-media platform and retailer, hosted a two-day pop-up in New York’s SoHo selling merchandise from Beiber’s “Purpose” tour, although the collection differed from that of Urban Outfitters. The pop-up was popular, with long lines of customers dressed in other merchandise from West’s and Beyoncé’s tours, snaking down Mercer Street.

Bieber has partnered with a number of designers during his “Purpose” tour, including Fear of God’s Jerry Lorenzo and Calvin Klein . The pop star, who starred in Calvin Klein ’s spring ad campaign, teamed with the brand for the European and North American legs of his world tour, showcasing footage of the campaign prior to — and during — the concert, and wearing apparel from the brand in a segment of his performance.

Justin Bieber—and His Artful, Disheveled Style—Is My Summer Mood

Image may contain Clothing Shorts Hat Adult Person Accessories Glasses Baseball Cap Cap Footwear and Shoe

Last month, Justin Bieber hit the streets of New York City wearing his version of an easy-breezy summer outfit: A padded zip-up denim vest, Ouer baggy shorts, and Drew House hotel-style slippers. It was all about the high-low mix—like pairing chunky Off-White sunglasses with a Los Angeles Angels hat. That fashion vibe, slightly disheveled and grungy, is nothing new for Bieber, of course; The pop star has been perfecting the art of being artfully grubby for years. But this summer, I’m particularly inspired by his ongoing commitment to crafting looks that are slightly off . (Yes, I mean that in a good way. Allow me to explain.)

When it comes to summer fashion, the best ensembles are always the ones that feel effortless and casual—nothing too overly styled or perfect. When it’s hot out, after all, the last thing you want your outfit to be is fussy; we’re going for ease , here. It’s precisely what Bieber’s wardrobe is all about this season: The singer has a penchant for taking emerging designers and fresh-off-the-runway pieces and making them feel totally nonchalant, as though he rolled out of bed and threw them on. (And perhaps he did.) Take his recent date night with wife Hailey Bieber , when Justin emerged sporting a crisp, blue Maison Margiela button-up shirt—dressy enough, right?—but offset it with extremely baggy jeans, black leather clogs, and sporty Prada shades. The whole thing felt casually cool, and not in a try-hard way.

Image may contain Hailey Baldwin Clothing Pants Footwear Shoe Wristwatch Adult Person Accessories Glasses and City

Bieber’s deliberately dressed-down aesthetic works especially well for the summer time . Compared to the fall and winter’s emphasis on slick outerwear, there’s something that’s less serious and buttoned-up about summer style; There are fewer layers to play with, for one, meaning the pieces you do wear can be a little more fun and bold. I also enjoy the idea of taking summer vacation mentality into your wardrobe; It’s almost like Bieber clashes things on purpose because, well, it’s his day off , and he can! The man even somehow managed to pull off an extremely baggy pair of gym shorts and paired them with fishermen sandals. That’s art!

All of this is to say: Even if Bieber’s slightly-dirtbag style isn’t your cup of tea, do consider appreciating it for what it is. The star is proposing that your summer wardrobe need not to be too stuffy or overthought. Some days, you can throw things together and take delight in the Frankensteinian end result. At the end of the day, clothes are meant to be mix and matched. Have a personality!

Justin Bieber Wears Purpose Tour Merch After Cancelling Tour

justin bieber purpose tour roupas

It’s been about a week since Justin Bieber abruptly canceled his Purpose Tour, citing a need to relax. On top of understandable disappointment, most fans offered support and well wishes to their favorite singer, hoping that he gets the rest that he needs. But this week, when Justin was seen out in Los Angeles wearing the very Purpose Tour merch that fans were hoping to get at his upcoming shows, they didn't respond kindly. One fan account put it bluntly, “stop wearing purpose tour merch. it's kind of a huge slap on our faces.”

Now, it’s likely that Justin has plenty of Purpose Tour merch tees (it was his tour after all) and maybe he just needed a clean tee to step outside in. One person said it perfectly when they wrote, “someone has to wear the remaining shirts.”

Last week, Justin told his fans that he’s been on tour for the last two years and it was time for him to stop and regroup. He seemed genuinely apologetic — but firm about prioritizing his mental health — and it seems highly unlikely that he would follow that statement by taunting fans with a Purpose Tour outfit. Justin has yet to make any follow-up statements about a future tour or concert series. In the meantime, we hope he’s doing well and getting the rest he needs.
