The trek starts from Bari village. Walk through the village on the path that leads straight through it, without taking any of the turns that you come across.

Once you leave the village behind, the trek begins with a walk through some fields. Take a right after you reach the end of the hutments. In monsoon, there will likely be a stream flowing here. You will need to cross this and continue walking through the fields.

Walk through the farmlands where a variety of rice like Indraini, Kolum, and Tukda are grown. Wheat and green vegetables like Tandul are also cultivated. The trail passes through one or two villager houses and dhabbas. There are some steep ascents in this section.

The path naturally turns upwards to the left after the fields. The trail now becomes a little rocky. It is well shaded by trees. The first small ascent leads you to the temple of a local deity. This is an ideal place for some quick rest.

Best time To Do The Kalsubai Peak Trek

The trek is open throughout the year with each season having a different landscape. So choose the best time depending on what you would like to experience.

July to September is the monsoon season. You get to see lush green landscapes and experience trekking in heavy rain. Although the monsoon season is the peak season it gets extremely crowded with about 2000- 3000 people on the trail.  It gets very slippery and risky due to the slushy trail. It is very difficult to get clear views too so it's best to avoid this season.

September and October are the flowering seasons. These autumn months give clear views of the surrounding peaks and forts. You get to experience walking on grasslands with a vast variety of flowers. The same variety of flowers found in the Kaas plateau is also found here. Snake lovers get to see some rare species on the iron ladders.

Night hikes are best from November to April when the weather is perfect to witness the spectacular sunrise from the summit. It can get a bit chilly so carry a light jacket.

May and June are the pre-monsoon months. The clouds form interesting patterns, also look out for the fireflies!

➤ How to Get Fit for the Trek

The Kalsubai Peak trek is classified as a Moderate grade trek . From Bari Village at 2400 feet, you will gain approximately 3000 feet in altitude.

Here’s a guide to help you get fit for a Moderate grade trek in 4 weeks.

Cardiovascular endurance.

In case you’re just starting with a fitness routine, start slow and increase your pace every day in the following manner –

  • Target completing a brisk walk of 5 km in 45 minutes when you begin.
  • Gradually increase your pace by walking 5 km, 4 times a week.
  • As you become more comfortable, introduce jogging into your routine.
  • Progressively increase the distance you jog in a workout until you can complete 5 km in 37 mins.

If you prefer cycling over running, target covering 15 km in 60 minutes when you begin.

  • Progressively increase your pace to cover 20 km in one hour.

Strength Training

This is an important area you need to work on.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. For strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and its variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Also, try these exercises for strength-

Target 4 sets of squats with 20 in each set

– Lunges (Forward, backward and lateral lunges)

Flexibility

Flexibility determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees.

It is an aspect that will help you trek comfortably. Carrying a backpack, however light can become a strain. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, and lower back muscles regularly promote relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

How to reach the top of the Kalsubai? For visitors, who wanted to be part of the thrilling experience and absorb the beauty of the Kalsubai range, trekking to the top is the only option. The Kalsubai trek begins at the Bari village and goes through forest area and the uneven plateau with appealing natural beauty to keep you engaged and motivated. Not just trekking during the day time, the Kalsubai night trek is an equally enthralling experience.

In addition to being the highest point in Maharashtra, the Kalsubai trek is a famous getaway for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. It is so because the Kalsubai peak is nestled in the famous ‘Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary’, another reason to explore and bedazzled by its beauty. The geographical features of the place make it super exciting for visitors to climb and relish in the beauty of the place.

Kalsubai trek The Kalsubai trekking because of its moderate difficulty and accessibility has become more of a favourite destination of scores of people who converge to the place for fun, excitement, and adventurism. There are several trekking routes as well as animal tracks for the hikers, and depending upon the opinion, one may select one. The most famous route is through the village of Bari, which is approximately 7 km from the Bhandardara.

To start your trekking uphill, one must reach Igatpuri on Mumbai Nashik road. The Bari village is where the trekking journey starts and passes through thick vegetation, small streams, rocky terrain, paddy fields, high lands and steep slopes at times. The entire trekking route can be covered in 4 to 5 hours depending upon the speed and the other activities one intends to indulge in. For trekkers, there are shades available at regular intervals for one to take a rest and relax before embarking on the next leg of the journey.

The start The trekking starts with a beautiful view of the countryside where the Waki river (a tributary of Pravara) flows like a stream on the eastern fringe of the Bari village. Near the stream, a small but important landmark is the Hanuman temple that is a resting place for trekkers returning from their arduous but exciting journey back home. The trekking route from the temple goes straight to the peak with minimal chance of getting lost as it is very well marked. There are 22 noteworthy temples in Nashik one should visit in 2022.

The trekking route is a fusion of simple to moderate slopes in addition to treacherous rocky outcrops that are overlooking the valley beneath. Initially, the trail is smooth but gets a bit challenging with the height. To make the entire stretch scalable, authorities have put up chains, steel railings, and ladders at different places that are difficult to climb for average climbers. The idea is to make the entire stretch of the trek easy navigable to visitors. The descent is through the same route.

Although there are places where the trekkers can sit and take rest but the place is ideal for trekking during the night or early morning. During this time, a trekker is immune from the scorching heat that dehydrates and tires an individual quickly. Also, during the monsoon season, trekking can be avoided or undertaken with caution, as the route is slippery and chances of an accident are more.

Alternate route Kalsubai peak is triangular with tabletop ridges in north and south. The alternate route to the Kalsubai peak is through the northern Indore village. The trek doesn’t have the required infrastructure but the unexplored route has very little traffic. The stairs are carved out of stone and dangerous tracts have iron chains for support. Overall the Indore village track to the peak is a bit steep and difficult to negotiate.

What is the best time to visit Kalsubai Peak? The best time to visit the Kalsubai peak is between October to February, when the temperature is suitable to make the climb and enjoy the beautiful landscapes that are covered with colourful flowers. Another added advantage to trek the place during the winter season is to view a clear night sky full of stars and perfect sunrise shots above the hill.

What is the best time to trek Kalsubai? Although climbers have their own opinions and preference over the issue, the Kalsubai trek can be covered both during the day and the night time. For people who want to trek during the day, it is advisable to reach the top at the dusk. It is the perfect time to be at the top when the sun hides behind the mountains creating a magical rainbow, a bewitching view indeed. Kalsubai Trek: A Thrilling Journey to Maharashtra’s Highest Peak

Table of Contents

Introduction

Picture this: you’re hanging in the air, between the earth and the sky, supported by nothing but a ladder. It’s a moment that defines adventure, one that tests your boundaries, celebrates your bravery and etches itself into your very being. My Kalsubai trek was all about these moments, and I can’t wait to take you along on this extraordinary journey.

Kalsubai Trek

Historical Perspective

To fully appreciate the grandeur of Kalsubai, you must first understand the heights it reaches. Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra, India, and it reaches an elevation of 1,646 meters (5,400 feet) above sea level. This Kalsubai peak height isn’t just a number; it’s the heart and soul of this mountain, showcasing the rugged beauty of the Western Ghats.

But Kalsubai’s significance goes beyond its impressive height. People have been coming here for ages to pay their respects to the local goddess. The name “Kalsubai” itself derived from a village woman named Kalsu who took up the challenging task of scaling the mountain. She couldn’t complete the task, but her efforts earned her the name of the mountain. Some cool stories and legends make this place even more special. It’s not just a trek; it’s a cultural journey.

How to reach Kalsubai Trek

Now, before we delve into the heart of this journey, let’s talk about how you can actually get to Kalsubai. If you’re in Mumbai or Pune, you’re in for a treat because Kalsubai isn’t too far away. You can opt for a scenic bus ride or choose to drive, both promising a delightful journey.

The drive is an adventure in itself, taking you through the serene rural landscapes of Maharashtra. As you leave the bustling city behind and head toward the mountains, you’ll witness the landscape transform, preparing you for the adventure that awaits.

The trek kicks off from Bari, the base village of Kalsubai. Reaching Bari is relatively straightforward. If you’re relying on public transport, catch a bus to Igatpuri, a town located close to Bari. From Igatpuri, you can easily hire a local vehicle to reach Bari, the starting point of your trek.

If you have the luxury of your wheels, driving to Bari offers flexibility, allowing you to set your pace and make impromptu stops to admire the scenic beauty of the region. The journey covers approximately 165 kilometers from Mumbai to Bari and typically takes around three to four hours, depending on factors like traffic and road conditions.

Best Time to Visit Kalsubai Trek

The prime trekking season for Kalsubai peak trek is during the cool, pleasant months of November to February. It is when the weather is just right, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Kalsubai is Maharashtra’s highest peak. Standing at a staggering height of 5400 ft. above sea level; it offers stunning views of the Sahyadri ranges and lush green cover surrounding the mountain. Kalsubai is one of the most popular trekking destinations in Maharashtra. The trek is steep in places but is helped immensely by the good infrastructure in place for the trek, making it accessible for inexperienced trekkers as well. The mountain itself dates back to the Cenozoic Era, composed mostly of solidified flood basalt. Kalsubai is a great spot for star gazers and campers as well.

Nestled amongst the pristine Sahyadri ranges, the Kalsubai trek is a blend of rocky patches and steep vertical hill slopes. The peak gives an excellent view of various forts such as Kulang, Madan, Alang forts. We recommend this place as a one-day trek , but incase an overnight journey is being planned, one can stay at Bhandardara which is approx 16-17 km away from Bari Village. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, pitch your tent on top of the hill at a suitable place to camp. There are many travel agencies which conduct trek events at this place. But since the route is pretty straightforward and well laid-out, going without a guide or group is not much of an issue. For details about accommodation at Bhandardara, refer to our article on this beautiful location here

The trek route begins at Bari, which is the base village. There is a small temple which is 15 minutes away from the start of the trek route. People who can’t climb up till the peak take the blessings of the deity at this Kalsubai temple. There are patches of shade at frequent intervals which can be used to rest and enjoy the breeze which gushes through the mountain route often. A word of advice though – opt for a night trek (especially in Summer) or begin the journey as early as possible in the morning; as the scorching heat tends to dehydrate and tire the trekkers on what is a long trek route to the peak. Fortunately, there are little stalls serving buttermilk and lemon juice at various places on the route, which leave one feeling refreshed and energized.

For breakfast and lunch, you can head to this place called Kalsubai Tea Centre And Dharmaveer Lunch Home which serves tourists. snacks and meals near the base Village. In case you need details about their menu and location, here is their Contact no : 099234 42273

Camping at the peak is possible and a very enjoyable experience. If you are planning an overnight camp, you can carry your own tents and pitch them at a suitable corner on the summit. Typically, you will find clusters of tents at and around the peak during peak seasons.

Do note though, that there is no washroom facility or toilet at the top of the mountain. There is a washroom located only at the base village to freshen up.

Apart from the camping option, Hotel Trek Kalsubai is an alternative for a more comfortable stay. Not only does this hotel provide accommodation at the base village, but it also provides trekking and camping facilities like guides, tents, etc for the Kalsubai trail. Here is their Contact no : 083903 74971

Nights at the top of the mountain can get quite chilly and so carrying a jacket or blanket to wrap yourself with warmth is quite a must. While the temperature during the day ranges from 35°C to 28°C, it can dip as low as 12°C to 15°C at night.

WHAT TO PACK

The Kalsubai trek can be long and arduous, so it’s best to be prepared and carry the right gear. At the same time, overpacking leading to a heavy load on your shoulders can be counterproductive. So choose your gear well and ensure that it is lightweight, portable where possible. Here are some suggestions:

  • Backpack: Ideal size would be 20-45 liters. Make sure it has a good carrying system with adequate padding and ideally a chest strap. We recommend the the Tatonka Pyrox 45 lit as top of the line trekking backpacks. This should have enough space for you to load up your tent and sleeping bag as well. For a day trek, even a good quality daypack/school bag will work – such as the  Deuter Futura 32 lit
  • Shoes: Many people are seen undertaking a trek in flaoters etc. This will increase the risk of slipping significantly, especially during monsoons. We strongly recommend basic hiking or (trail) running shoes.
  • Camera: Ideally a point and shoot with good zoom or a 360* camera , for capturing the scenic locations and/or Binoculars (one within a large group is enough)
  • 2L Water Bottle per person
  • Sweatshirt ( During winters)
  • Torch / Headlamp , especially for night treks
  • Dry Snacks like biscuits, wafers or nutty bars.
  • Cap/ sunglasses
  • Raincoat/ Poncho ( During Monsoons)
  • Power Banks for charging electronic devices
  • Hiking pole , especially if you have weak knees

If you are camping, you will also additionally need the following:

  • A camping kit such as this or the following separately
  • Tent (waterproof for monsoons)
  • Sleeping bags (10* in winter, 20* in monsoon)
  • Tent light/ lantern
  • Peebuddy for women

SAFETY AND SECURITY

-The rocky patches and metal staircases often get slippery during monsoons and thus, some caution should be exercised while trekking. Invest in a sturdy pair of shoes with good grip!

– Take along a basic first-aid kit to help in case of injuries or emergencies.

-The main hospitals in this area for any medical emergency are : 1) Primary Health Care Center Ahmednagar; Maharashtra. Contact no :097628 30880 2) Samarth Hospital SH44; KolaharGhoti Road; AurangpurPhata; Contact no : 099222 64094

-The nearest police station is located at a distance of just 160 m from Bari village.

Here are some details :

Akole Police Station Dhumalwadi Road; Amrut Nagar; Akole; Maharashtra 422601; India phone: 02424 221 333.

Kalsubai Trek Information

What is kalsubai .

Kalsubai ( Marathi : कळसूबाई शिखर) is a mountain in the  Western Ghats , located in the  Indian state  of  Maharashtra .

Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra and is located in  Ahmednagar district  in Akole Taluka. Its summit, situated at an elevation of 1,646 metres (5,400 ft), is the  highest point  in Maharashtra. Hence, known as the Everest of Maharashtra.

The mountain range lies within the  Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary . It is visited throughout the year by avid trekkers, Kalsubai temple devotees and wildlife enthusiasts. It is named after one of the three sisters Kalsubai, Ratnabai and Katrabai. The other peak  Ratangad  is named after Ratnabai.

Kalsubai Trek

Kalsubai is a 6.6 km-long (4.1 mi) round-trip trek from Bari, with an elevation gain of around 2,700 feet (820 m). This is a one-day trek having a moderately hard difficulty level, with lush green landscapes and multiple waterfalls.

The peak attracts many trekkers and devotees determined to scale the mountain. To reach the summit there are well-designated trekking routes. The most popular route is through the eastern mountain face taking off from the base village Bari. The krushnavanti river, a tributary of Pravara, takes origin on its eastern slope and flows like a stream through the outer fringes of Bari.

A short distance away from  Jahagirdarwadi . This provides an important landmark to commence the trek as well as a resting post for those nearing the final lap of their trek. The route from behind this temple takes the hiker straight to the summit.

The trek along this route is a mix of easy to ascend slopes as well as treacherous rocky outcrops overlooking the valley below. Considering the increasing footfall in recent years, the government has built iron ladders along the vertical hill slopes. These assist trekkers to allow for a convenient and safe ascent.

Regular route via Bari of the base village is easy for all trekkers, which has fixed ladders, cemented steps and several people flocking during the monsoon, the route via Indore is raw with stone steps and a huge iron chain for support at the dangerous patches.

Azure Sky Follows - Kalsubai Trekking - Baari Village

Kalsubai trek: On top of Maharashtra

“Bye, happy journey. Come back soon,” our hosts shouted out to us when we left for Kalsubai trek.

Shades of grey adorned the sky. The storminess of the weather catalysed our willpower to scale Kalsubai. Little boys and girls were going to school. On the two sides of the road, lush greenery extended for miles. It was difficult to separate the grasses from patches of paddy fields. Rain drenched trees populated the slopes of the hill. Dhoti-clad men donning white caps were walking on the village path with us. Bari village is really tiny, abruptly rising around the vicinity of the temple and ending on the bank of a seasonal stream.

Kalsubai trek

The villagers here are accustomed to watching poncho-laden men and women walk by on weekends. They usually don’t bat an eyelid. But, our case was different. They know us; we had visited the village temple the night before in complete darkness, under heavy downpour with a local kid as our guide.

The numerous cascades diving down the hill slopes had created channels of small streams with significant water current. With pants hitched up to the knees, shoes in one hand and our camera in the other, we crossed one such stream barefoot.

On top of Kalsubai is a temple housing the local deity. The temple holds important religious significance among the people living in the nearby villages.

After a very brief walk through paddy fields, the terrain started gaining slope. An orange flag hoisted doorway was standing in the middle of nowhere. The patch next to it was perilously muddy. The pitter-patter of the rain made the path more treacherous.

We arrived at the first crucial point of the Kalsubai trek, the first metal ladder. There are,in total, four metal ladders which are attached to the boulders of the Kalsubai mountain by bolts at different sections of the trek. Sometimes new ladders overlapped the old rust-laden and half-broken ladders.

The iron claws of fear clasped me hard. The husband made the first move while I stood by the foot of the ladder praying to all the Gods and Goddesses that I might have offended in my lifetime. When it was my turn to put the first step forward, the wind started blowing furiously and the pitter-patter took shape of a full blown shower. Halfway up the ladder, I stepped on my own poncho and almost tripped.

A tiny plateau region provided a decent vantage point to view the valley below. As far as I could see, there were streaks of white ribbons meandering along the green hills. The unabated rainfall triggered cascades all through the hills. With a glass of lemon water in hand, I wondered how I am going to survive the other three ladders.

Monkeys are the real bosses of the second and third ladders. Families of monkeys sat on the handrails, stairs and the adjacent boulders. I don’t like being around monkeys. They are too mischievous and unpredictable. I was not bold enough to risk clearing the traffic jam on the wet metal ladder with wafer thin footspace of the steps.

Usually, on monsoon weekends, Kalsubai trail is accustomed to seeing whopping footfalls. We were lucky. On the day we hiked, there were barely other trekkers there, probably owing to it being a Saturday and not Sunday. The only drawback of this equation was that the monkeys outnumbered us.

A local dog following another group of teenage trekkers came to our rescue. With its tail wagging, it took the lead on the ladders and cleared our path from the monkeys.

With the rise in altitude, the temperature drop was real. The surroundings were draped in a translucent curtain of mist. The lush green turned hazy green now. Visibility was poor. It was as if we were watching the world through foggy glasses. On two sides of the trail were blue wildflowers. A thousand tiny water droplets settled over the wet petals of the flowers.

Stairs to Heaven

Vicinal to the flowery land was the fourth and final ladder to reach the summit of mount Kalsubai. The first sight of the ultimate ladder made me euphoric. Using ‘surreal’ would be a major underestimation of the scenario. The foot of the ladder originated from right where we were standing but its head was swallowed up in the depths of clouds.

We emerged from the clouds and stepped on mount Kalsubai’s summit. The pinnacle was deprived of any vegetation. The edge of the summit was fenced with occasional openings. An orange coloured temple popped up from the blackish rocky mountain apogee. The temple was tended by two priests. Peda, a very common Indian sweet was sold at the temple by the priests at INR 60 for 6. We stuffed our mouth with some, which gave our intensely tired bodies some much needed carbohydrate.

On a clear day, miles and miles of Maharashtrian countryside is visible from the top of Kalsubai. But on the day we went, a typical monsoon day, we were shrouded in clouds. The wind had been howling throughout the trek, but on the summit the temperature dropped to freezing cold and the rain lashed hard. Clouds raced around us and once in a while, it revealed the green cloaked valleys below.

Our guts were in for a real test on the downward journey. Climbing down ‘stairs to heaven’, that is the first ladder on the downward journey or the last on the upward journey, was more terrifying than I thought. The only assurance I had was the local guide hired by another party who kept telling me not to look down.

My survival called for a tea break and we enjoyed sipping hot tea from a shack on the trail. Beside us, a 50-something man was devouring stir fried onions fritters or kanda bhaji. A walking stick lay beside him. Before we finished our tea, we got to know he lives in Kolhapur and frequents this trail.

A disturbing noise took us by surprise. It was a screeching baby monkey. Two men had forcefully grabbed it and they had an evil grin on their face. The shack owners continued their business without any emotion on their face. We, the trekkers, exchanged confused but alert glances with each other.

A troop of monkeys were lounging on the second and third ladders. A group of youths were stuck. For every step they took forward they ran back four steps. We joined them in the back and forth movement. Soon, another batch of youngsters joined the drama with us. The man from Kolhapur came and waved his walking stick at the monkeys. He kept shaking the stick and rescued us panic-stricken souls. But in our hearts, we knew the monkeys had enough reason to rebel.

The descent beyond this point was sans any major trouble. Only once, a herd of goats mistook our ponchos for something edible and the pack of 30 surrounded us, gradually closing in. Thankfully the goat-herd came in time. We and our ponchos escaped unhurt.

Losing our way near the bank of the stream can be counted as our last adventure on the Kalsubai trail. We took 12 hours to complete the trek which is generally completed in 5-6 hours. After crossing the stream, we turned back to look up on the majesty of Kalsubai for the last time, until we return again.

Wow! What an adventure! Those metal ladders seem a scary experience! I’ve climbed various mountains in the UK with a group of friends, including Scafell and Hellvelyn in the Lake District, Mount Snowdon in Wales and Ben Nevis was our final mountain in Scotland. We’ve not been climbing as a group since.

Wow you have done some commendable hiking activity in your life! This metal ladder is the first and the easiest one. We couldn’t capture the second and third ones due to the monkeys. I didn’t dare take out my phone or camera from my bag, the monkeys are infamous for snatching things away. Those two and the last one was really scary.
