1. Vientiane

The three-tiered stupa extends over 140-feet above ground and is covered in both solid and painted gold. It was constructed in 1566 after Vientiane became the capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom.

Pha That Luang is a religious pilgrimage site for many Buddhists, who believe the stupa contains the breast bone of Buddha. Around the stupa, you’ll also find different temples, which are elegantly adorned with red roofs and gold facades.

6. Wat Phou

Nestled at the base of lush Phou Khao mountains are the remains of Wat Phou. This complex of ancient Khmer Hindu temples was supposedly built in the 10th and 11th-centuries honoring Lord Shiva. It’s now a Theravada Buddhist place of worship, and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Southern Laos.

Although many of the structures are starting to crumble, you can still marvel at the grand architectural remains. The main pathway that leads to the sanctuary is lined with boundary markers, and two palaces can be seen on either side. Once you’re in the sanctuary, you’ll see several Buddha images, stone carvings, and a library room.

5. Vieng Xai Caves

Located in the sleepy village of Vieng Xai, the Vieng Xai Caves are far off the beaten path for most tourists. Despite its stunning landscape, the caves are actually known for housing over 20,000 soldiers and civilians during the Indochina War. For over nine years, these people lived, worked, and developed an entire community inside the 100 or so caves.

Although you can only visit a handful of them now, it’s still a worthwhile journey to understand more about Laos’ tumultuous history. You’ll be able to see meeting rooms, houses, and theaters that were built in the underground caves.

4. Si Phan Don

Dotted along the Mekong River is the archipelago of Si Phan Don. Many of the islands in Si Phan Don are submerged by the river during monsoon season, although there are three main islands (Don Khong, Don Det, and Don Khon) that most people choose to visit.

Exploring the islands of Si Phan Don is a great way to immerse yourself in Laotian culture. You’ll find traditional homes, shops, and restaurants set up along the banks of the Mekong River.

3. Plain of Jars

The mysterious Plain of Jars is one of the most unusual attractions in Laos. Scattered around the Khouang plain in the Lao Highlands are hundreds of stone jars, many of them weighing up to 14 tons.

Historians have debated the true age or origin of the jars. However, they are believed to be between 1,500 and 2,00 years old and originally used to store alcohol or food. Some people even believe that the jars were used as urns.

2. Tube the Nam Song

Soak in the scenic landscape of Vang Vieng with a relaxing float down the Nam Song River. It’s a popular attraction for both locals and backpackers, who come to enjoy the cool waters, and possibly a beer or two.

As you tube down the river, you can stop at one of the numerous bars that line the banks. You can spend the afternoon there partying, or you can take a bucket of booze back to your tube to continue the float.

The photography in this post is amazing, especially the Mekong River shot!

We also spent a bit of time in Laos traveling and found some fantastic spots to visit. Vang Vieng was our favourite for the natural scenery and of course the tubing was fun. We did a caving tour which we highly recommend as well as visiting the blue lagoon which also has a zip line park attached which is stunning.

Its nice to see these pictures of Laos again. I visited Laos about one year ago for 4 weeks. I absolutely loved it and will certainly go back. One of the best things I did in Laos was a motorbike ride called The Loop in a little place called Tha Kaek.

What a beautiful country. I had no idea that Laos had that kind of beauty. Are tourists relatively safe? The underground caves with the hospital, theater and bakeries are incredible.

Here, many precious sculptures and pictures are inlaid with gold, covered with silver, studded with jade and many other precious stones. Wat Si Saket is the oldest temple of Vientiane that is still in its original form.

This temple is still preserved since the date of its construction in 1818 according to Siamese Buddhist architecture. Throughout the corridor include 2,000 Buddha statues which are cast in bronze, ceramic, precious wood and gilded, plated with iridescent silver. The number of Buddha statues in the temple can be up to nearly 7,000 in total which sometimes takes you a whole day to visit.  What a very staggering number for an old temple.

Also known as Xieng Khuan, Buddha Park is a sculpture park located 25km southeast of Vientiane.

Buddha Park is a very large garden with more than 200 Buddhist statues and Hindu deities that are crafted as unique works of art. The most prominent of the garden is a giant reclining Buddha statue measuring 40 meters long. The moss-covered statue is on a cool green background, creating an ancient but very peaceful space. As a megalithic archaeological landscape in Laos, the Plain of Jars consists of thousands of stone jars scattered around the upland valleys and the lower foothills of the central plain of the Xiangkhoang Plateau.

Xieng Khuang is one of the areas with pristine landscapes and the purest climate in Laos. Here, the most mysterious is the Plain of Jars, a cultural and historical area with many curious theories both tourists and archaeologists. Thousands of stone jars were scattered throughout the field which are believed to date from 1,500 to 2,000 years. The Plain of Jars is also a mark of the fierce battlefield of the war against the US of the three Indochina countries.

Known as Old Xieng Khuang, Muang Khoun was the provincial capital in French colonialism, the Royal Capital and the centre of Phuan Kingdom. There are a few buildings still existing in the town such as French school, governor’s residence and Wat Phia Wat, in which, a sitting Buddha is surrounded by brick columns reaching skywards. The nearby Ban Phai Village also consists of jars built from granite instead of stone as in Plain of Jars. At here, you can easily meet the villagers doing weaving and basketry.

A monument at Tham Piu Cave (aka the “Missile Cave”).

Muong Kham has a cool and fresh year-round climate. The town is also famous for 2 natural hot springs, Bo Noi (small stream) and Bo Nhay (big stream) with temperatures up to 60 degrees Celsius. Around 4km north of Muang Kham locates Tham Piu Cave, one of the tragedies of the Indochina War and stands as a solemn memorial to hundreds of innocent villages who were taking refuge in the cave and were killed by a single US missile attack in 1968. When up to the cave with grave markets, bomb craters and a large golden Buddha along the way, you can offer incense and pay tribute to the dead at the shrine.

Nong Tang Lake

Located about 48km west of Phosavan is Nong Tang town where you can visit the 15 th century ruins such as Wat Mixay, Wat Ban Ang, Ban Mong Stupa. A peaceful natural Nong Tang lake – nameshake of the town – is nearby, flanked by high limestone cliffs. This is a favorite place for the locals to catch fish or have a picnic. The highlight of this area is Tham Pha Cave complex that houses hundreds of Buddha statues from the Haw invasion a few centuries ago, and the awesome caves are located deep into the hill side.

Tham Chang Cave – the most famous one around Vang Vieng which includes both nature and history value.

Vang Vieng is home to dozens of caves, in which, Tham Chang Cave (or other called as Tham Jang) is considered as the most famous one around Vang Vieng. This cave includes nature value with beautiful stalactites, rare stalagmites and history value as well. This is pretty cool inside. To reach the cave, you need to walk across the long bridge built across the Nam Song River, then climbing steep stairways up to the cave. A blue lagoon is a bonus thing here for you to swim in. You should better head there in the morning to beat the crowds during peak season.

Tham Phu Kham Cave & Blue Lagoon

Tham Phu Kham Cave is around 20 minutes west from Tham Chang and also a favorite spot in Vang Vieng as this is not only for cave interest (flashlight is necessary to explore the cave with steep climbs) but visitor can enjoy some fun activities at nearby blue lagoon such as swimming, jumping off from the tree into the water. However, the water color will be not blue when the rainy season comes (June-August) and often get crowded. There is also other place with same name – blue lagoon 3 – for your choice with less touristy but further at around 1 hour from town.  

Tham Nam (Water Cave) – Tham Xang (Elephant Cave) Tham Nam is an approximately 500m long underground cave including some streams running through the mountainside which takes about 30 minutes to reach the end before turning back. In dry season when the water level is low, you can walk into the cave. In rainy season, you will get inside the cave with a tube and a rope due to high water level and strong flow which can be more difficult when the darkness covers everything. For those who love adventure, it is worth changeling one time.

Not far from Tham Nam is Tham Xang or other called as Elephant Cave because the special feature of the cave is an elephant-form stalactite which created the name of the cave. This is small in size so making combined tour with other should be more worthy than visiting itself only.

A 30 meter Kaeng Nyui Waterfall, known for full of nature beauty, the coolness streams and lush green.

About 25-minute drive away from the center of town on the east side, you will visit 30-m tall Kaeng Nuyi Waterfall which is located in a park maintained by the villagers of Ban Naduang. This waterfall is at its best in rainy season while the flow dramatically differs in the dry season. There are several smaller waterfalls that you can swim in.

Hiking up to mountain viewpoints

If you are looking for an amazing viewpoint of Vang Vieng, head to Phangern Mountain – hiking to the top is one of the best things to do. The hike up isn’t well-paved so you will need to wear proper shoes & bring enough water with you. It can take you around 20 minutes or more each way depending on your health and breaks along the way.

Another stunning place to check out Vang Vieng from above is at Nam Xay viewpoint . This is slightly easier and shorter to get to the top with 360-degree views while reaching on it. However, you still need to be careful when towards the end the path can be muddy and slippery.

Vang Vieng is on the banks of the Nam Song, and no trip would be completed without experiencing the river first hand. Kayaking can be offered as part of a day tour that includes lagoons and caves. Tubing can also be arranged around town.

The Bolaven Plateau is an elevated region in southern Laos and home to many ethnic group such as the Laven, the Alak, Katu, Taoy, and Suay. The most popular places of the region to visit are the waterfalls including Tad Lo, Tad Fane; the villages of ethnic minorities, a tour of the area’s coffee plantations or an elephant day trek.

• Freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins which are endangered species that can be viewed by boat off Don Khon island;
• The remains of the first railway in Laos – the Don Det–Don Khon 7km long narrow gauge railway which was built by the French to bypass the Khone Phapheng Falls and travel along the Mekong River.

Xe Pian National Protected Area is home to forests and wetlands with many species of birds, fish as well as endangered mammals including tigers, elephants, bears and gibbons. About 30 miles (50 km) south of Pakse, it makes a great day trip or overnight.

Tad Saepha Waterfall is located in the Xe Pian River, within the Xe Pian National Protected Area.

Dong Hua Sao National Protected Area is home to butterflies, birds and monkeys and covers 425 square miles (1,100 sq km). You can spend more than one day (2-3 days) in the jungle hiking, zip lining and enjoying nature.

The Plain of Jars is Xieng Khuang’s major attraction. Huge stone jar-shaped vessels are scattered over a dozen locations on the lonely plateau around Phonsavan, fascinating and mysterious. Three major sites are easily accessible from Phonsavan and have been cleared of unexploded American bombs (UXO), although it’s still best to stay on the main paths. Site 1.

Thong Hai Hin (Stone Jar Plain) is located 15km (9 miles) southwest of Phonsavan. This site has the biggest collection of jars, numbering over 250, and also the largest jar, which according to local lore is the victory cup of the legendary Lao king Khun Jeuam, who is said to have liberated the local people from an oppressive ruler.

The lush Bolaven Plateau is known for its temperate climate and MonKhmer minority peoples. Indeed, the name Bolaven means “place of the Laven”, once the predominant ethnic group in the region. Other attractions include waterfalls, boat cruises and, for those so inclined, visits to the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Hotels and travel agencies in Pakse offer a variety of guided tours to the region, ranging from day trips to three- to four-day itineraries. A good starting point for an exploration of the region is the Taat Lo (Lo Waterfall), 94km (58 miles) northeast of Pakse. The road is paved throughout, and the journey time is no more than two hours. The falls drop only a few metres but are wide and surrounded by lush vegetation.

The royal capital, Luang Prabang (Louangphabang) is one of the most intriguing, magical and romantic cities in Asia . One of the top things to do in Laos is to visit the city that has been recognized as Unesco's World Heritage Site. It is a treasure trove of fine old temples and boasts quiet streets lined with handsome colonial buildings.

In the centre of the city, between Mount Phu Si and the Mekong is the Royal Palace Museum which offers an insight into the history of the region. To the southwest of the Royal Palace is Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham. Dating from the early 19th century, this temple was once the residence of the Sangkhalat, the supreme patriarch of Buddhism in Laos.

Close to the tip of the peninsula, on the banks of the Mekong is Luang Prabang’s most renowned temple, Wat Xieng Thong. One of the top things to do in Laos is to embark on a half-day or day excursion to explore the stunning Kuang Si Waterfalls located in the vicinity of Luang Prabang. About 30km (20 miles) south of the town are the multi-tiered Kuang Si Waterfalls, replete with beguiling limestone formations and crystal-clear pools.

Food vendors keep most of the local visitors at the lower level of the falls, which can be very crowded during holidays. Up a trail to the left of the lower cascade is a second fall with a pool which makes for good swimming and is generally quieter. The trail continues to the top of the falls, though after rain it can be dangerously slippery.

Lao cuisine may be seen as the cooking tradition and style of the entire Lao ethnic group and is based on the consumption of sticky rice as a staple. Other essential ingredients include kha, or galangal (a ginger-like rhizome with a peppery flavour), and nam paa (fish sauce). Lao cuisine has numerous regional variations, but that of Vientiane, the capital is generally considered the most sophisticated.

Popular Lao dishes include tam som – the equivalent of Thai som tam – a spicy salad made of sliced green papaya mixed with chilli peppers, garlic, tomatoes, ground peanuts, crab, lime juice and fish sauce. Another standby is laap, a spicy dish of minced meat, poultry or fish mixed with lime juice, garlic, chilli pepper, onion and mint.

Located close to the midway point between Vientiane and Luang Prabang, the tiny settlement of Vang Vieng is a convenient place to break the journey between these two towns in either direction. Set by the banks of the Nam Song, amidst a startlingly beautiful natural terrain of limestone karsts, Vang Vieng originally developed as a backpacker stopover.

It quickly developed a reputation as an anything-goes party town – complete with raucous full-moon parties, as though a Thai beach resort had been transported to landlocked Laos. Today the main attraction is the surrounding countryside, and the town has become an attractive, relaxed base for rock climbing, cycle tours, kayaking and other outdoor activities, with some excellent boutique accommodations and decent places to eat.

Tham Phu Kam, to the west of Vang Vieng, is sacred to local Buddhists, and thoroughly atmospheric. The main attractions here are Tham Phu Kam Cave and the Blue Lagoon. The cave is located on a limestone cliff and can be reached by a steep path. In the cave, visitors can explore its chambers and there is also a natural pool suitable for swimming. When planning a visit, it is recommended to hire a guide for safer exploration.

If you're looking for things to do in Laos, be sure to visit the breathtaking Blue Lagoon. This stunning natural pool, nestled in the heart of the jungle, boasts crystal-clear water that is simply spectacular to behold. Visitors can swim in the pool or chill out on the surrounding beach. Rugged mountain forests set the scene for hikers seeking to explore the remote hill villages of the north. The countryside around the Mekong between Kratie and Stung Treng is crisscrossed by an extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails, known collectively as the Mekong Discovery Trail. For many years, boats were a major form of long-haul passenger transport in Laos, not only on the mighty Mekong but also along large tributaries such as the Nam Ou. These days, a vastly improved road network, and an increasing number of hydroelectric dams blocking the rivers have reduced the importance of water transport.

The Nam Ou, a major tributary of the Mekong flows south from the mountains of China’s Yunnan province through the Lao provinces of Phongsali and Luang Prabang before reaching the Mekong upstream from Luang Prabang. It is possible to travel along various sections of the Ou between the new dam projects.

Straddling the Nam Ou , Nong Khiaw is the perfect place to visit for a few days — relaxing in a hammock or exploring the surrounding area on foot or by kayak. Nong Khiaw is a large village set amid glorious karst scenery, which seems to owe its existence to a bridge that crosses the river here. This place has an increasing array of guesthouse accommodation and makes a wonderfully picturesque base in which to immerse yourself in the backwaters of Laos.

The aforementioned bridge is an important link in the Chinese-built Route 1, which travels from Luang Nam Tha province in the west to Xieng Khuang province in the east. If you choose not to travel further north on the Ou it is possible to secure public transport either towards Udomxai in the west or to Sam Neua in the east.

One of the most pleasant surprises awaiting the visitor to Vientiane is the French cultural influence surviving in the city. It is a pleasure to enjoy a breakfast of croissants and café au lait. This agreeable ambience aside, Vientiane’s most notable memorial to the French influence must be its architecture. There are numerous small residences, and not a few mansions, built in the style of the former colonial power.

Many of these may be found in the older part of the town, along the riverside appropriately designated Quai Fa Ngum. Here, as by the shaded boulevards in the vicinity of That Dam and along Lane Xang Avenue, the “Champs Élysées” of Vientiane, may be found fine examples of colonial French architecture, complete with shutters and red-tiled roofs.

The country’s most important religious building is best seen at sunset when the golden stupa seems to glow in the fading light. That Luang is a striking sight, and of great spiritual significance for the Lao people, considered the symbol of Lao independence and sovereignty. It is a strange and exotic structure, combining the features of a Buddhist temple with the mundane requirements of a fortress.

Today the great edifice still retains a very fortress-like appearance. It is surrounded by a high-walled cloister, which is pierced by tiny windows, and access is by way of finely gilded red-lacquer doors which add to the impression of a medieval keep. Close up, however, the sacred character of the structure is unmistakable because of the abundant religious imagery.

One of the top things to do in Laos is to visit the islands of Si Phan Don, a natural attraction that offers visitors the chance to witness the stunning scenic beauty of the country and gain a glimpse into the life of its more remote rural population. The Mekong River is at its widest in Laos here, close to the Cambodian border: during the rainy season it is up to 12km (7.5 miles) across, and when the waters recede many small islands emerge. It is from this phenomenon that the Si Phan Don region takes its name, meaning “Four Thousand Islands”.

The most evocative Khmer ruin outside of Cambodia, this rambling mountainside complex dates from the sixth to twelfth centuries. Ancient and magnificent, the complex of Wat Phu – literally “Mountain Temple” – is located on a site which has been sacred to at least three cultures. What appears to have attracted the attention of all of these civilisations is an unusually shaped mountain behind the temple, Phu Pasak.

As you enter the complex you can see the remains of palaces built by Champasak royalty, towards the end of their dynasty, from which they viewed the annual festivities held on the full moon of the third lunar month. An east-west axial promenade passes between two rectangular baray or bathing ponds and leads to the base of the middle level.

Having a traditional massage at a Lao sauna is one of the best things to do in Laos to wind down and rejuvenate after a long trek. The herbal mixtures in the steam bath (and the tea) are jealously guarded secrets. In addition to the services of major hotels, good massage parlours can be found in major cities around the country. Traditional Lao massage can be quite rigorous, so be prepared to have every part of the body worked.

Looking for the best things to do in Laos? Whilst it’s widely underrated, Laos is one of the countries in Southeast Asia that you simply cannot miss while travelling around the continent. 

Although dominated by green mountains and covered in thick, tropical jungles, the country is also home to many thriving cities and bustling markets. 

From temples to trekking and tea breaks, here’s my guide to the best 15 things to do in Laos.

One of the top activities to do in Laos involves taking a trip to the capital, Vientiane . While the city is fairly small, Vientiane is home to many temples, including the Phra That Luang national monument which attracts thousands of tourists yearly. 

A day spent exploring the third century Phra That Luang Buddhist temple is well worth the elbow bashing through crowds – this temple has been reconstructed several times over the course of a thousand years to maintain the original design that reflects Lao culture.  

While in Vientiane other popular temples include Wat Si Saket, Haw Phra Kaew, and the Wat Si Muang.

Take a Trip to Patuxai

Your trip to the vibrant Laos capital wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Patuxai gate. The war monument, built sometime between the 50’s and 60’s, symbolises the victory of gaining independence from France. 

The monument is formed of five towers that represent coexisting with other nations along with the five Buddhist principles, and there are also four gateways with a pond by each to symbolise a lotus flower. Alongside frescos adorning the walls of Patuxai, from the top of the monument you can look out over the city. 

An afternoon spent wandering the grounds of the iconic Patuxai gate offers an insight into Lao history along with the opportunity to appreciate the stunning architecture of the arch – one of the main Laos points of interest.

Explore Buddha Park

On the outskirts of Vientiane stand, sit, and lay the two hundred Hindu and Buddhist statues that form Buddha Park. This park is home to carved humans, demons, and animals alongside Buddhas and Gods. 

Created in 1958 by Bunleau Sulilat and his untrained students, the Buddha Park forms one of the two meadows of sculptures (the other being Sala Keoku) in Laos completed by Sulilat. 

The main Laos attractions in the park include a giant pumpkin-like sculpture with levels representing hell, earth, and heaven, and a forty metre long Buddha that’s positioned lying down. 

While weaving between concrete statues and into demon mouth’s you’ll also be able to find refreshments in the nearby riverside restaurants. Exploring the sculptures scattered across the meadow that runs alongside the Mekong River is another on this list of the best things to do in Laos. 

Go Tubing in Vang Vieng

Just north of the capital, in the small town of Vang Vieng, flows the beautiful Nam Song River. The deep blue-tinged river is surrounded by rocks, trees, and riverside cafes and is a spot popular with tourists for kayaking or tubing. 

One of the best things to do in Laos, in my opinion, is to wedge yourself into one of the coloured rubber rings and float along the river. Here you’ll pass caves, swimming holes, and Buddhist statues positioned on rock ledges. 

There’s also the option to stop off at the bars that overlook the river if you fancy a quick drink before bobbing back along the tourist speckled waters. Whether you’re after a scenic swim or a drink-paired dip in the Nam Song River, tubing in Vang Vieng is among the most unique things to do in Laos.

Visit Tham Jang

Another Laos must see, also in Vang Vieng, is the cluster of Tham Jeng caves. Once crossing the bridge that sits on top of the Nam Song River, you’ll need to climb concrete steps that lead up to the cave entrance. 

Not only does the Tham Jang cave boast overlapping rock formations, but you’ll also be treated to stunning views from the top of the cave entrance – here you can look out over Vang Vieng. 

Close by to Tham Jang flows a stream that is often used as a swimming hole for tourists to cool down in after exploring the caves. 

Brilliant Things to See & Do in Laos During the Day 

Bathe in the hot springs in kasi.

Found in the centre of the tropical jungle in Kasi, the natural hot springs and pools are among the top places in Laos – and well worth a visit. 

Take a dip in the clear waters whilst listening to the croaks and chirps of the jungle. You have the option of staying in one of the huts that sits half swallowed by the forest, or staying for only a brief bath in the hot springs paired with a lunch of traditional Lao food. 

While a trip to the hot springs in Kasi could be considered a little bit out of the way, bathing in the pools is an experience like no other in Laos. 

Go Rock Climbing in Vang Vieng

There are several rock climbing spots in Vang Vieng, each offering a range of climbs with increasing difficulty. With the choice of a simple hour-or-so climb to trips spanning upwards of three days, there’s something for everyone when attempting to climb. 

Depending on who you choose to climb with, you’ll be able to learn the rock climbing basics along with skills such as abseiling. If you’re after a few days of breathing in the outdoor air, breaking climb time records, and the occasional bruising, rock climbing in Vang Vieng is the thing for you.

Wander the Pha Tok Caves

One of the top Laos tourist attractions can be found in the small, riverside town of Nong Khiaw – here you’ll find several caves that are definitely worth exploring while travelling around Laos. 

Wandering the Pha Tok Caves, tucked away in one of the limestone mountains that line Vang Vieng, is a must. You can access the caves by crossing over bamboo bridges and climbing concrete steps that pass through sections of jungle alongside rice paddies. 

Other than the two Pha Tok Caves, the Pha Kuang Cave (that spreads around three hundred metres) is another spot worth seeing while in Laos. 

Hike Mount Phousi in Luang Prabang 

Luang Prabang is one of the major cities to visit in Laos. While Luang Prabang is well known for its mix of both natural and historical attractions (including the Kuang Si Falls and the Wat Xieng Thong temple), one of the best things to do in the area is hike Mount Phousi . 

The hill, which peaks at around one hundred metres, can be climbed in a few hours and is easy enough for beginners to hike. There are also several Buddhist shrines dotted along the way. 

This spot boasts uncluttered views of sunrise and sunset, offering picturesque scenes of the town, circling rivers, and mountains that sit on the horizon. 

Although slipping into mud caked boots at the crack of dawn may not sound all that appealing, if you set off early enough to climb Mount Phousi you’ll likely pass lines of monks collecting alms before experiencing the breathtaking views.

Visit the Kuang Si Falls

When it comes to Lao landmarks, none are more iconic than the Kuang Si Falls . Located south of Luang Prabang, the Kuang Si Falls flows over three tiers to around sixty metres. 

Once you’ve crossed the trail that swirls to the side of the Kuang Si Falls, you’ll be able to dangle your legs from the edges of the wood bridges that arch over the falls or swim in one of the turquoise, shallow pools. 

Although the area can get quite crowded with tourists in the afternoon, once arriving at the Kuang Si Falls you’ll be able to take a dip in the pools, explore the tropical jungle, and get a chance to hike part of the limestone hillside.

Go Trekking in Nam Ha National Park

Boasting thick forests, a diverse range of flora and fauna, and many different species of animals, trekking through the Nam Ha National Park is another of my top things to do in Laos. 

While you have the choice of day treks to week-long trips, a visit to the Nam Ha National Park is a must-go destination while travelling around the country.

While hiking around Muang Ngoi you’ll pass through grasslands, forests, and rivers that often open out into small towns. 

It is here in these little, tucked away villages you’ll get a real sense of the culture and communities in Laos. Free from the swarms of tourists, in towns such as Ban Huay Bar and Ban Huaysen you’ll find somewhere to stay for a fraction of the price of hotels in the bigger cities. 

If you’re prepared to hike for several days you’ll be able to explore all of the rustic villages scattered around the Muang Ngoi area along with having the opportunity to photograph the wildlife found in the dense, sunlit forests covering the landscape.

With not one, but six, waterfalls in and around the Paksong area, visiting Paksong is one of the best things to do in Laos if you love nature, exploring and, more importantly, love an Instagram opportunity. 

Cascading over one hundred and sixty metres, the Tat Katamtok waterfall is one of the best falls in Laos. This waterfall is also part of a trail that you can trek while wandering the area. 

While the Tat Cham Pee flows into a deep pool that tourists can swim in, both the Tat E-Tu and Tat Fane waterfalls are close by to several restaurants and resorts that offer spectacular views of the falls and surrounding jungle. 

Whether you’d rather pass your time wandering around the winding trails that weave through the jungle and alongside the Paksong waterfalls, or would prefer to simply sip coffee from one of the cafes positioned besides the cascades, a trip to the waterfalls is highly rated on my list of the top things to see and do in Laos. 

Explore Phu Chi Fa

When it comes to fun things to do in Laos, nothing beats hiking the Phu Chi Fa mountain range that spreads along the border between Laos and Thailand. It’s a spot that’s well known for its beautiful views over the country. 

The surrounding area of Phu Chi Fa is mainly farmland and vineyards scattered across sloping valleys and green speckled hills – though, from the peak of the mountain, you’ll be able to see the white mist that settles along the horizon. 

Once the mist clears Phu Chi Fa offers spectacular views of sunrise and sunset over Laos. 

Although the winding trails and steep hike up to the summit of Phu Chi Fa can be slightly difficult to trek, it’s well worth the effort for the chance to watch the sun streak over Laos. 

Cool Things to See & Do in Laos at Night

During the day, Luang Prabang is a rather sleepy but beautiful place in Laos – though, it’s a totally different story by night. For something a little bit different, head to the buzzing night market. 

Market stalls appear every night lining the four streets that join the town centre. Here you’ll be able to find handicrafts, textiles, clothing, and jewellery for low prices along with food stalls selling noodles and beer in the streets forming the night food market. 

The night market is the perfect spot to mooch around after a day in Luang Prabang and is often crowded with tourists haggling with stall owners. If you’re after a souvenir for your trip to Luang Prabang, the night market is the place to pick one up.

You could spend months in Laos and still not have seen all the country has to offer, however, I recommend spending 7-14 days to cover all the main Laos landmarks.

Trust me – you’ll want to visit Laos between October and April, when the weather is warm and dry. However, if you’re looking to travel the country via the river, make sure you go before January when water levels are at their highest – making it a breeze to travel through the country.

1. Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang in Northern Laos is the country’s most popular tourist attraction. This laid-back town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its exquisite Buddhist temples, French colonial buildings, and riverside setting. There’s also a lot to do and see in the area like waterfalls, caves, hiking, and slow boat cruises.

How to go  — The quickest way to get to Luang Prabang is by plane. Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ) serves flights from Kuala Lumpur (3h 5m flight duration), Bangkok (1h 45m), Singapore (3h 25m), Siem Reap (2h 15m), Hanoi (1h 5m), Chiang Mai, Kunming, Haikou, and several domestic destinations including Vientiane (45m) and Pakse. Flights are served by AirAsia, Lao Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, Vietnam Airlines & SilkAir.

Most travelers arrive here by land from the North Thailand-Laos border crossing or from the capital, Vientiane. The land journey from Vientiane takes 10 to 12 hours, usually on overnight buses. Meanwhile, the slow ferry from Huay Xai, the northern border town, usually takes two days.

2. Muang Ngoi & Nong Khiaw

If you want to go deep into the cultural and natural landscapes, go off-the-beaten-path in Northern Laos. Nong Khiaw is one beautiful place to enjoy the riverside scenery dominated by monolith karst cliffs. Go farther down the river onboard a local slow boat to Muang Ngoi Neua and go trekking around off-the-grid farming villages.

How to go  — Nong Khiaw is about a 4-hour drive north from Luang Prabang. To get to Muang Ngoi Neua, go on a scenic local ferry ride up the river. Travel time takes only 1 hour.

3. Bolaven Plateau & Champasak

Champasak Province in Southern Laos is the place to go if you love to see nature! The Bolaven Plateau is worth visiting for its majestic waterfalls, some of the most beautiful in Laos and maybe even Southeast Asia. Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands) is another popular place in Champasak but only go there for serious riverside relaxing. For a change of scenery, Vat Phu located near Pakse (the main city) is worth a peek for its ancient temple ruins.

How to go  — The quickest way is to fly to Pakse, the capital and most populous city in the southern province of Champasak. Pakse International Airport serves direct flights from Ho Chi Minh, Vientiane, Luang Prabang & Savannakhet. Flights are served by Lao Airlines. Vientiane-Paske flights take around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

You can also reach Pakse on overnight buses from Vientiane. Travel time is around 10 hours. Or, from Cambodia. Not including the time spent for the border crossing, travel time is around 12 hours from Phnom Penh and 14 hours from Siem Reap.

4. Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is infamous as a major party town, but even if you don’t go there to party, the natural scenery is worth at least a day of sightseeing. Take a bicycle and follow the village roads that pass through rice paddies surrounded by steep jungle-covered limestone karst formations.

How to go  — Vang Vieng is easy to reach from Vientiane. The drive north to Vang Vieng takes around 3.5 to 5 hours.

5. Vientiane

Vientiane is probably the most laid-back capital city in Southeast Asia. This is a good thing if you want to relax while enjoying the convenience of the big city. If you have a day to spend in Vientiane, check out the Patuxai Victory Monument and Pha That Luang (National Symbol of Laos). Or, simply watch the sunset along the peaceful Mekong riverside.

How to go  — Vientiane is the primary flight hub of Laos. Vientiane-Wattay International Airport (VTE) serves flights from Kuala Lumpur (2h 45m), Bangkok (1h 15m), Phnom Penh (1h 25m), Hanoi (1h), Seoul (4h 45m), and Busan. Flights are served by AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Lao Airlines, Thai Airways & Vietnam Airlines.

You can also reach Vientiane by land from Bangkok, Thailand via the Nong Khai-Thanaleng border crossing. Travel time by train from Bangkok to Nong Khai is around 12 hours. From Thanaleng, the land journey to the center of Vientiane is another 1 hour.

Vang Vieng can be described as the party hub of Laos and your Laos travel isn’t complete without it. In the past, the place was notorious for its rave bars and alcoholism. 7. Tham KongLo Caves

Also known as the Konglor Caves, this mysterious cave is located in Central Laos. The limestone formations, 300 feet tall ceilings and the Nam Hin Bun River that flows through the cave leave travelers feeling mesmerized. Kuang Si Falls

Located just about 29 kilometers away from Luang Prabang is the Kuang Si Falls, a perfect destination for a day trip. Nong Kiao

Si Phan Don 

Aptly named the 4,000 islands, Si Phan Don is a group of islands at the southernmost point of Laos, right before the Mekong River enters Cambodian territory. Phonsavan 

The famous Plain of Jars in Laos, also known as Phonsavan, is sadly a rather under-appreciated destination. It is not only one of the most beautiful places in Laos, it is also one of the most unique. The Plain of Jars offers a huge bag of treats to tourists who are interested in the culture of the Lao people.

Phonsavan is a vast open field with big stone urns here and there, each weighing up to thousands of kilograms. No one knows how the stone urns got there or what purposes they served, but people speculated that they might have been used to store wine or rice. 

As the area is of great cultural value to the Lao people, and as there are local people living in the area, the best way to explore Phonsavan is with a local guide who knows plenty about the culture.

Often overlooked by international tourists, Pakse is a city in the southern section of the country which will certainly surprise you with its calming and relaxing atmosphere, which is even more evident during the rainy season, when the shades of green adorn the entire city with a refreshing mantle.

Thakhek Loop

Getting to Laos might require a bit of planning due to its unique access. Currently, direct flights from outside of Asia are unavailable. If you’re in Southeast Asia, reaching Laos is more straightforward. Consider flying into major travel hubs like Bangkok , Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Hanoi , which offer direct flights to Luang Prabang or Vientiane. From there, a quick regional flight will take you to Laos. We recommend checking Skyscanner for flights for optimal prices. 

Many travelers incorporate Laos into a broader Asian journey, often combining it with Thailand or following the famous Banana Pancake route . Our own experience involved an overland journey from Northern Thailand to Northern Laos for 10 days, followed by travel to Vietnam .

For overland travelers, entry points are typically the Thai borders near Vientiane or Houayxai in the north. An adventurous alternative to taking the bus from North Thailand to Luang Prabang is the 2-day slow boat journey departing from Chiang Khong, close to Chiang Rai. This leisurely cruise along the Mekong River includes a stopover in Pakbeng, a quaint country town. While longer than a bus ride, it’s an enjoyable introduction to Laos, demanding extra time on your Laos Itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Laos

The optimal time for a visit to Laos is during the dry season, spanning from November to April . This period promises predominantly dry and warm weather, with cooler nights in the mountains between November and February. However, from April, the heat escalates significantly , especially in southern Laos.

Laos experiences its rainy season from May to October , characterized by frequent, intense downpours lasting a few hours each day. Despite the rain, you can still bask under blue skies and sun, relishing fewer crowds and cost-effective options . Just remember to pack a rain jacket. Keep in mind that Laos’ infrastructure is less developed compared to neighboring countries, leading to muddy roads during this season.

For river explorations, plan your expedition between November and January, when water levels are lower. To witness the country’s lush greenery , consider a visit right at the tail end of the rainy season in November.

Be aware that the late dry season, March to April, coincides with burning season . During this time, farmers conduct significant field preparation fires, resulting in atmospheric smoke that might hinder views and occasionally affect breathing comfort. Upon disembarking, follow the visa-on-arrival process, paying the visa fee and a $2 processing charge. Provide 1-2 passport photos. Heading south of Luang Prabang, we arrive in Vang Vieng, the adventure capital of Laos. Surrounded by impressive karst mountains, it’s a great place to enjoy nature, explore blue lagoons and caves, go on excursions, or leisurely float down the river in a canoe or tube.

Once known for its lively backpacker parties, Vang Vieng has cleaned up its act and now presents itself as an outdoor and adventure destination. The main draw here is the stunning limestone formations that create some of the most amazing views in Laos. Don’t miss out on the incredible viewpoints, even if it means enduring a bit of heat to reach them. 

Vang Vieng became famous among backpackers for its wild river tubing scene. While it’s tamer now, the picturesque Nam Song River offers a perfect setting for tubing or kayaking.

Consider renting a motorbike to explore the area more extensively, including the turquoise lagoons and nearby caves . Your days can be filled with exciting activities, capped off by leisurely walks through stunning rice fields at sunset. 

If you’re a nature lover, Vang Vieng is definitely worth a visit during your 10-day Laos Itinerary. There’s so much to do in Vang Vieng that you can easily spend two to four days enjoying all the experiences it offers.

Best things to do in Vang Vieng

As mentioned earlier, Vang Vieng is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The next few days on your Laos Itinerary are packed with thrilling activities to keep your adrenaline flowing. Here’s a rundown of the best things to experience in Vang Vieng on your 10-day Laos Itinerary.

Hike to one of the many viewpoints

To fully embrace the awe-inspiring beauty of Vang Vieng, consider embarking on a hike to one of the nearby viewpoints.

Nam Xay viewpoint

Among the most popular viewpoints is the renowned Nam Xay viewpoint. Once you reach the top, get ready for that classic photo op with a motorbike – it’s become quite the icon. Yet, be aware, this hike isn’t a walk in the park. The paths can be uneven, those rocks a bit spiky, and some parts can get pretty steep. So, definitely gear up with some sturdy shoes, keep your hands free for balance, and don’t forget to bring along plenty of water. Depending on how fast you go, the hike usually takes about 30 minutes or so . The entrance fee is 10,000 LAK (roughly €0.50 cents). The best time for this spot is during sunset – it’s no secret, so it can get a tad crowded up there. To beat the rush and make your way down safely before darkness falls, we’d recommend heading up a bit earlier.

Pha Ngern viewpoint

If you are up for another challenge, head out for a captivating hike to the Pha Ngern viewpoint . Just a heads-up, there are three viewpoints with the same name on Google; we’re referring to the following Pha Ngern Viewpoint . You’ll need a ticket for this one too, costing around 10,000 kip (~€0.50 cents). This trail kicks it up a notch from the Nam Xay route, with a more rugged terrain, but we had so much fun doing this one! 

We’d suggest kicking off your hike early in the morning to beat the heat and get the most out of it. The climb usually takes around 30 minutes to reach the top, depending on how speedy you are. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to hit the second and third viewpoints, add about 45 more minutes to your journey. Trust me, the view from the summit is an absolute stunner – a full-on 360-degree panorama that makes all the effort so worth it.

Swim in the turquoise Blue Lagoons

Let’s talk about one of Vang Vieng’s shining stars – its captivating blue lagoons! There’s a total of six lagoons (they go by the names Blue Lagoon 1, 2, 3, and so on), all just a short drive from the town. They’re like little natural pools with inviting turquoise water where you can take a dip and relax.

Blue Lagoon 1 is the most popular, especially on weekends when both tourists and locals gather there. This one is easy to combine with those nice viewpoints we talked about earlier. Blue Lagoon 2 is cute, with a wooden footbridge – a nice spot for a picnic. If you’re looking for a quieter time, go for Blue Lagoon 3 – it’s a bit of a drive from Vang Vieng, but the calm atmosphere and beautiful blue water make it worth it. There’s more to enjoy – like zip lines, rope swings, diving spots, and even a climb to a viewpoint that’s worth the effort. Some people also combine this with a visit to the Phapoungkham cave . For each lagoon, you’ll pay around 10,000 kip per person as an entrance fee.

There are multiple options on how to get to these lagoons – you can rent a bike, grab a scooter, or even ride in a buggy. But keep in mind, the roads leading to the lagoons can be a bit rough , so biking might not be the smoothest ride. Even riding a scooter had its moments, and we saw quite a few folks choosing those dirt buggies instead.

Quick heads up! – be cautious around the lagoons, especially with parking. Some people might try to act like “parking officers” and ask for money. And watch out for toll collectors on the roads and bridges – they can be a bit persistent about getting cash from you.

Explore Vang Vieng’s caves

Vang Vieng is a treasure trove of caves, each offering its own style and level of challenge. From the easily accessible and well-lit Tham Chang to the more mysterious nameless caves, there’s something for every type of adventurer. Some caves are breathtakingly beautiful, some less impressive, and a few might even give you a thrill (remember to bring a flashlight!).

Tham Chang is a natural marvel that guarantees an unforgettable experience for anyone who enters. After climbing a set of stairs, you’ll journey into the heart of the cave. Inside, you’ll encounter an array of mesmerizing rock formations and intricate limestone structures , shaped by nature over countless years. The cool and mysterious atmosphere inside the cave provides a refreshing escape from the world outside.

Another popular choice is the well-known Tham Phu Kham Cave , conveniently situated near Blue Lagoon 1. While we didn’t have the chance to explore Tham Nam (Water Cave) , located approximately 15km north of Vang Vieng, it promises a unique adventure of tubing through its passages. This blend of walking and swimming adds an extra layer of fun and excitement to the exploration.

Tour the Nam Song River by Tube or Kayak

Vang Vieng’s claim to fame (or perhaps notoriety) was none other than tubing! Despite a stricter approach by the government towards river tubing and riverside bars, tubing remains a popular and exciting way to experience the river . Now focused more on the adventure itself than the wild parties, tubing offers a safer but no less thrilling ride down the waterway.

Slide into a tube, let the gentle current guide you along, and take in the scenic beauty as you sip on a refreshing beer. Although some riverside bars remain, the emphasis is on relaxation and enjoyment rather than partying. These stops offer a chance for refreshments and games before you continue your journey down the river. The entire tubing experience takes a couple of hours, depending on water levels and currents, giving you ample time to take in the picturesque landscape. Just remember to bring a dry bag to keep your belongings safe!

To join in the tubing excitement, you can rent a tube from the designated rental spot for around 60,000 Kip (approximately €3). A refundable deposit of the same amount is required upon rental, to be returned when you bring back the tube unscathed. The tube rental fee also covers a short tuk-tuk ride to the tubing starting point.

If tubing doesn’t pique your interest, there are alternative options available. You can opt for a leisurely kayak ride down the river or embark on a tranquil longtail boat journey , offering a more relaxed yet equally scenic experience.

Rent a scooter or dune buggy to cruise the countryside

If you’re eager to get out of Vang Vieng and see the beautiful countryside, renting a scooter is a great idea. It’s the best way to reach viewpoints, blue lagoons, and rice fields. With your own scooter, you can go off the main roads and really enjoy the natural beauty of the area. You’ll ride through charming villages, see lush rice fields, and feel the excitement of riding on the open road. The terrain might be a bit rough and the roads aren’t as good as in Thailand, so keep that in mind. Depending on the time of year, a buggy might be better for navigating muddy roads. 

Soar High with a Hot Air Balloon Adventure

If you’ve always dreamt of taking a hot air balloon ride, Vang Vieng offers one of the most budget-friendly opportunities in the world. These rides are available both in the morning and evening, allowing you to experience the sunrise or sunset from above (depending on weather conditions). The cost is approximately €95 per person for a 30-minute flight over the city, and €119 for a one-hour flight amidst the mountains. While the idea of seeing Vang Vieng from the sky sounds enchanting, it’s important to note that the hot air balloon rides here have gained a reputation for falling short of expectations. Many balloons don’t venture far, only ascending to about 600-800 meters before descending back to their starting point. Additionally, the flights are relatively brief.

Where to stay in Vang Vieng

Similar to Luang Prabang, the heart of Vang Vieng is conveniently compact and easily navigable by foot. Nowadays, Vang Vieng offers a wide range of accommodation choices. While upscale hotels have been popping up, catering more to Korean and Chinese tourists than budget backpackers, there are still numerous affordable options to choose from.

This centrally located hotel provides air-conditioned rooms, often with balconies offering city views, all at a reasonable price. When compared to Luang Prabang, the dining scene in Vang Vieng is relatively modest, with a limited selection of standout eateries. Nonetheless, we did manage to discover a handful of delightful places to satisfy your taste buds during your stay:

Lotus restaurant – Just a short walk outside the main city, across the bridge, lies Lotus Restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised by the incredible food here. The chicken steak and duck laap (larb) were both exceptionally delicious. This charming little eatery exudes a cozy atmosphere and is run by lovely owners who make the experience even better.

Kiwi Kitchen – Whether it’s a scrumptious breakfast or a hearty Sunday roast, Kiwi Restaurant has you covered. The perfect spot to unwind and indulge in fantastic food, all while soaking in the serene riverside view. With an extensive menu offering a variety of dishes, there’s something for every palate.

Kapphet-Vegan – If you’re seeking a delectable vegan experience, look no further than Kapphet-Vegan. A charming family-owned establishment with a genuine passion for its food. The delightful smoothies, teas, and vegan dishes were a true delight.

Namfonh restaurant – For some of the best culinary delights in Laos, we highly recommend Namfonh Restaurant. The mango sticky rice left a lasting impression, prompting us to return for more and sample the equally delightful fried chicken and Papaya salad. The fruit shakes were a refreshing treat too.

Happy Mango Thai restaurant – This popular Thai eatery offers a range of authentic Thai dishes that are sure to satisfy your cravings. While prices might be a bit higher than local joints, the quality of the fresh and piping hot food, along with generous portions, make it a worthwhile choice.

How to get around Vang Vieng

The main part of Vang Vieng is centered on a single long street and a few smaller ones branching off. It’s not a huge area, and you can easily walk around the town itself. However, if you want to explore the surrounding countryside, you’ll need some way to get around.

The best way to see the sights in and around Vang Vieng is by renting a scooter. Having a scooter gives you the freedom to go beyond the town and enjoy the beautiful landscapes around you. Laos Itinerary Day 9 – 10 | Vientiane

The next stop on our 10-day Laos itinerary brings us to Vientiane, the capital and largest city of Laos . While some online reviews might be mixed, we were pleasantly surprised by what this city had in store. While Vientiane doesn’t boast the same bustling energy as Bangkok or Hanoi, it offers a unique charm and hidden gems for those who approach it with an open mind. We relished in leisurely strolls through its quaint streets, engaging with warm and friendly locals, and embracing the unhurried rhythm of life . The city’s food and cafe scene also impressed us, featuring chic French-style cafes nestled amidst the urban landscape.

Vientiane’s position along the Mekong Delta offers stunning vistas and a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle. Walking along the riverbank promenade became a favorite pastime, allowing us to unwind and savor the tranquil ambiance. While Vientiane offers some cool must-do activities, you won’t need to dedicate too much time to this mellow capital on your 10-day Laos itinerary. Instead, consider saving your exploration for the final 24 hours before departing from Laos, especially if your flight takes off from Vientiane.

Best things to do in Vientiane

While Vientiane may not be filled with numerous well-known tourist spots, it still boasts significant landmarks, temples, and shrines that hold their own importance. You definitely shouldn’t miss the iconic Patuxai Victory Monument and a visit to the COPE Visitor Centre, shedding light on Laos’ role in the Vietnam War. For a more unique experience, venture to Buddha Park, a bit farther from the city center, where a curious assortment of statues from Hindu and Buddhist mythology awaits—some even large enough to step inside!

Marvel at the Patuxay Monument

The Patuxay Victory Monument, often referred to as the “Arc de Triomphe of Vientiane,” stands as a notable landmark in the capital city of Laos. Constructed during the 1960s, it serves as a symbol of national pride, commemorating Laos’ struggle for independence from colonial rule. The name “Patuxay” translates to the “Gate of Triumph,” carrying inscriptions that honor the courage of those who fought for the nation’s sovereignty.

As you pass by this towering archway, a hint of Europe may cross your mind. While inspired by the Parisian Arc de Triomphe, a closer look reveals intricate Lao motifs, a blend that mirrors Vientiane’s rich cultural fusion. Its architecture harmoniously merges traditional Lao elements with French colonial design, boasting detailed carvings and exquisite sculptures.

In the past, ascending the monument’s staircases led to a rewarding panorama atop the observation deck, offering a captivating view of Vientiane’s layout and the surrounding landscape. Regrettably, due to inadequate maintenance, access to the observation deck is no longer available.

Roam around the artistic Buddha Park

Located roughly an hour away from the city, Buddha Park (or Laos Xieng Khuan) is a captivating destination featuring a diverse array of statues from both Buddhist and Hindu mythology. A visit to this quirky open-air sculpture park reveals a collection of over 200 massive concrete sculptures , depicting Buddha, Hindu deities, as well as a mix of unique human figures to divine beings and even some more unconventional depictions like demons. One of the highlights is a towering dome that offers an excellent panoramic view of the entire park when climbed. Created in the 1950s by a priest-shaman, the park carries an intriguing blend of ancient-looking artistry and modern craftsmanship.

For art and sculpture enthusiasts, this park stands as one of the most captivating tourist spots in Vientiane. During our visit, we found the park to be a picturesque and serene haven, exuding a sense of uniqueness at every turn. The backdrop of vibrant flowers and lush greenery adds to its photogenic charm.

Entrance to the park is approximately 40,000 kip for foreign visitors (about €2), and you can expect to spend around two hours exploring. Arriving early is advisable to avoid both the scorching heat and the crowds that start to gather around 11 am when tour buses arrive. To reach the park, you can opt for a private car or take the budget-friendly route by catching local bus no.14 from Talat Sao Bus station, costing around 6,000 kip (about €0.30) per person for a one-way trip, with buses departing every 20 minutes.

COPE visitor center

As foreigners, we were unaware of the significant impact that Laos endured during the secret war of the 1960s and 70s. Throughout the Vietnam War, the USA dropped a staggering 2 million tonnes of bombs on Laos, earning it the grim distinction of being the most heavily bombed country on the planet. This relentless assault left a profound mark on the local population, resulting in numerous tragic amputations and casualties. To this day, many unexploded bombs still litter the Laotian landscape , posing an ongoing threat to the people.

COPE plays a crucial role in providing prosthetic limbs to the victims of these devastating bombings. The lasting consequences of unexploded cluster bombs continue to haunt and harm the Laotian community, underscoring the urgent need for support and awareness. The COPE Visitor Centre serves as an eye-opening experience, featuring exhibits that shed light on the bombings, the process of prosthetic care, rehabilitation efforts, and the ongoing mission to clear the land of dangerous remnants. It’s a profoundly moving encounter that offers essential insights into the resilience of this nation.

While confronting the somber aspects of Laos’ war-ravaged past, a visit to COPE parallels our educational experiences like our exploration of the S21 prison and Killing Fields in Cambodia . While it might not boast the same cultural allure as Luang Prabang or the natural charm of Vang Vieng, Vientiane offers a respectable array of temples that can make for a delightful morning exploration. Scattered throughout the central city area, you’ll come across numerous quaint Wats on your Laos Itinerary.

Pha That Luang – Standing tall at 45 meters, this gold-covered Buddhist stupa is truly iconic. Regarded as Laos’ national symbol, its dazzling golden dome is a sight to behold, symbolizing both Buddhist faith and the sovereignty of the Lao people.

Haw Phra Kaew – Once a regal temple, this meticulously restored structure has been transformed into a museum housing a captivating collection of Buddhist artifacts and statues.

Wat Si Muang – A sanctuary believed to harbor the guardian spirit of Vientiane, Wat Si Muang holds profound significance as a spiritual hub for the locals.

Le Trio café – Coffee enthusiasts will find their haven here. Dive into a variety of healthy and tasty food and drinks. The coffee is exceptional, and the service is top-notch. Arrive before 9:00 am to relish fresh-baked croissants. With friendly staff and a relaxing atmosphere, it’s a great spot for a hot drink. 

Foo d house Laos – We stumbled upon this awesome spot just around the corner from our hotel. The place looks modern and stylish. Seriously, everything here is top-notch, from their Lao sausage to the zesty papaya salad. The staff is absolutely friendly, making it a welcoming spot for great Thai/Lao food and coffee. Try their iced dalgona!

ຕຳປາກຫມາ – You want a taste of local goodness? This spot is as local as it gets! We noticed it was packed with locals, and that’s always a good sign. The next day, we tried their signature noodle dish, and it was out-of-this-world amazing.

Noy’s Fruit Heaven – Need a refreshing juice or a light breakfast? Noy’s Fruit Heaven has your back. Fresh and healthy stuff all around. Perfect for a quick pick-me-up.

Roti House – Craving some real Indian food? Roti House is where it’s at. The food is seriously delicious, and the staff is super helpful. Savor a diverse range of flavorful Indian dishes from the menu, including satisfying options for vegetarians.

How to get around Vientiane

When you arrive at Vientiane’s train station, make your way directly to the buses stationed there. These buses are usually ready for passengers arriving by train and depart once they’re filled up. Opting for the bus is both economical and efficient for reaching the city center, especially since the train station is slightly outside that area. Navigating Vientiane’s city center on foot is entirely feasible, given its relatively compact size. Another viable option is bike rental, allowing you to explore at your own pace.

If you’re looking to pick up the pace or have more than 10 days to spare on your Laos itinerary, consider incorporating these additional destinations into your journey. Should you only have a couple of extra days, we suggest extending your stay in Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang to avoid overwhelming your Laos itinerary.

Nestled three hours north of Luang Prabang, Nong Khiaw is a quaint village along the Ou River in Northern Laos, surrounded by breathtaking limestone mountains. Adventurers seeking a rustic experience can explore caves, embark on hikes, or simply unwind in hammocks. The Pha Tok Caves, situated within a limestone cliff, offer a unique exploration opportunity. Hiking through jungle terrain, rice terraces, and waterfalls is an option, along with immersive homestay treks. The laid-back town is famed for its herbal steam baths, while independent hikes to scenic viewpoints above the town provide panoramic vistas.

Pakse & Bolaven Plateau 

(2-3 NIGHTS)

Pakse, the capital of the Champassak region, serves as Southern Laos’ gateway, most people take the overnight train to get there. Offering a mix of urban charm and convenient access to the Bolaven Plateau, Pakse is a launchpad for further exploration. The Bolaven Plateau boasts stunning waterfalls, cooler climates, and verdant forests. This region also showcases numerous coffee plantations and opportunities for waterfall swims. The most common way to get to Laos is a flight. You can get into either the capital city of Vientiane or the tourist hotspot of Luang Prabang. While some people choose to arrive by bus from Northern Thailand or Northern Vietnam, the bus ride is rather long. With so many inexpensive airlines in Southeast Asia, there is little reason to choose an international bus trip to Laos.

As previously mentioned, people overlook Laos as a travel destination. It sees far fewer tourists than its neighboring countries of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. While the quiet, laidback nature of Laos is one of its biggest draws, this lack of visitors also means less tourism infrastructure than in other countries in the region.

1. stay in the world’s highest treehouses near the bokeo nature reserve.

In Northwestern Laos, the Bokeo Nature Reserve protects the area’s fragile ecosystem. Near the town of Huay Xai, where dense forest shelters rare wildlife, you can experience the natural beauty of Laos firsthand.

The biggest draw to the area, and a highlight of any trip to Laos, is the world-famous Gibbon Experience . This incredible ecotourism project was created in the late 90s to protect the black-crested gibbons , once thought to be extinct. After a trek through the lush jungle, you’ll reach the world’s highest treehouses which provide you with views of the jungle canopy right outside your window. Connected via ziplines and suspension bridges, staying in these treehouses is a true bucket list experience .

Depending on your fitness level, the Gibbon Experience has a variety of different treks to choose from. The easiest trek requires just one hour of walking and allows for plenty of free time for relaxing in your incredible treehouse while spotting gibbons. For the more adventurous, the multi-day trip takes you further into the National Park, where you’ll swim in natural pools and refreshing waterfalls before spending the night in your treehouse, deep in the jungle.

In addition to the rare black-crested gibbons, visitors to the Bokeo Nature Reserve regularly see other wild animals, such as elephants, bears, and wild buffalo. With mountains that reach nearly 5,000 feet in altitude, the reserve also is a perfect place for bird watchers. 2. Learn about Buddhism in Luang Prabang       

In Northern Laos lies Luang Prabang, a charming city with a small-town feel featured on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Luang Prabang is a favorite among tourists when visiting Laos and it’s easy to see why. There’s no shortage of things to do – from taking a local cooking class , visiting the Pak Ou Caves , or shopping at the lively night markets. 

One of the best things to do in Luang Prabang is to wake up early in the morning for Tak Bat – when hundreds of monks collect their daily alms throughout the city. And if you’re interested in a deeper understanding of Buddhism, book a tour with Orange Robe Tours . You’ll learn all about Buddhism in Laos from a former monk. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and part of the profits are donated to the Buddhist temples of Luang Prabang.

While in Luang Prabang, make sure you visit the Royal Palace and the meticulously decorated Wat Xieng Thong temple. There are many temples on the palace grounds full of elaborate mosaics, decorative wall carvings, gold leaf gilding, and beautiful lacquering.

And for a great view of the city at sunset, consider a hike up Mount Phousi . Found in the center of Luang Prabang, this is a somewhat strenuous hike but the panoramic views at the top are the ultimate reward. Enjoy the panoramic city and river views while resting in a shady spot and then explore the temples at the top of Mount Phousi before heading back down.

Finally, no trip to Luang Prabang would be complete without a visit to Kuang Si Falls . Located about 20 miles from the city center, this stunning waterfall is one of the largest in Laos. The picturesque multi-tiered falls are hues of turquoise that cascade into larger pools of water – perfect for swimming! Once the day starts to warm up, the pools provide a much-needed respite to cool off from the tropical humid climate. You can reach the falls on your own by motorbike or you can book a round – trip transfer for as little as $6 .

3. Unlock the Mysteries of Eastern Laos

If offbeat attractions are of interest, you should visit the Plain of Jars or the Vieng Xai Caves , as both attractions are shrouded in mystery. The two destinations are remarkable historic sites and definitely highlights of a trip to Laos.

The Plain of Jars is in the eastern highlands of Laos where thousands of huge jars carved from rock are scattered among the grasslands. Archaeologists have different hypotheses on their origin, how they were created, and what they were used for. Some experts think the ancient stone jars either stored rice wine or were used for burial sites. Whatever their purpose, the placement of jars dotted across the fields creates a unique and eerie landscape.

Just getting to Vieng Xai Caves is an adventure all by itself. Few travelers visit this remote region of northeastern Laos, but those that make the journey will discover a fascinating chapter of the history of the country. Among the beautiful karst limestone formations is a once-hidden city and during the Secret War, roughly 20,000 Laos citizens survived intense bombing by living underground in these caves.

For nine years of war, routine daily life continued in the caves in almost total darkness. Schools, hospitals, markets, military bases, and even a theater and radio station were all built discreetly in the caves. Opened to the public in 2007, visitors can now tour the caves. Tours come with excellent audio guides with actual interviews of those that lived in the hidden city. For history buffs or anyone looking to explore an off-the-beaten-path corner of Laos, the Vang Xai caves are a must-visit!

4. Get Outdoors in Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is known for being a backpacker’s party paradise. It was once famous for drunken tubing trips down the Nam Song River which were lined with makeshift bars offering free shots of rice wine, cheap beer, and rope swings and waterslides of questionable safety standards. Several backpacker deaths in 2012 put an end to some of the wilder times in Vang Vieng, but there is so much more to this area than floating down a river completely inebriated.

Located near the central part of Laos, Vang Vieng remains popular among tourists for its water sports, hiking, and outdoor activities like dune buggying. The surrounding natural area is truly stunning, with caves for exploring and crystal clear blue lagoons for swimming.

There are so many things to do in Vang Vieng that you could easily spend a week exploring. Consider visiting the Tham Phu Kham Cave , a sacred place for Buddhists with a nearby blue lagoon that’s perfect for swimming on a hot day. Or book a ride in a hot air balloon over the limestone karst hills that form a backdrop to the city.

If outdoor activities aren’t your thing, just spend the day exploring the city. It’s full of cafes, street food vendors, and restaurants serving western fare if you are craving a taste of home. 

5. Relax in the Sleepy Capital of Vientiane

Further south is Vientiane, Laos’ sleepy capital city with a mixture of French-colonial architecture, ornate Buddhist temples, and modern amenities. Patuxai , the most well-known monument in the city, honors Laotian independence and has a similar style to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris .

During the day, plan on visiting Buddha Park , an unusual sculpture park about a 45-minute motorbike ride from the city center. There you will find a mixture of buddha statues, deities, and other structures that you can climb to get a view of the eclectic park. If you don’t drive a motorbike, there is also a public bus that routinely visits the park from the main bus station.

While in Vientiane, make sure to visit Wat Si Saket , a temple that displays thousands of Buddha images. It was once home to the famous Emerald Buddha Statue that now resides in the Grand Palace in Bangkok.

The COPE Visitors Center is also an intriguing place to visit. COPE provides free prosthetic and orthotic devices to survivors of unexploded ordinances (UXOs) in Laos. During the Second Indochina War , known in America as the Vietnam War, over 2 million tons of bombs were dropped on Laos by the USA. Approximately 80 million unexploded bombs remained after the war and dozens of people are still killed or maimed every year in explosions. At the COPE Visitors Center, you’ll find exhibits showing what is being done to clear the land of UXOs in Laos and how victims are being helped by this nonprofit.

Vientiane is definitely one of the more relaxing and unique capitals that I’ve been to in my travels.  And while there aren’t as many activities to experience compared to other capital cities, Vientiane is worth a visit for a night or two!

6. Cruise Around the Si Phan Don Islands 

The Si Phan Don Islands, also known as the 4,000 islands, are found in Southern Laos. The three most popular islands to visit are Don Det, Don Khon, and Don Kong.

You’ll definitely want to rent a bicycle and spend a leisurely day exploring the islands. There are also boat tours of the Mekong River and, if you’re up for a real adventure, you can try a full-day kayaking tour. You might even spot an Irrawaddy Dolphin. These critically endangered dolphins are making a comeback thanks to local environmental efforts.

A visit to the Khone Phapheng Falls is an absolute must while in the 4,000 islands. These falls border Cambodia and make up the widest waterfall in the world. In the rainy season, the Khone Phapheng Falls can stretch nearly six miles or more across the Mekong River!

Most accommodations in Si Phan Don Islands are in rustic family-run bungalows, which are pretty basic and lack air-conditioning. But if you can go without your usual comforts for 2 or 3 days, the 4,000 islands are worth adding to your Laos itinerary.
