Chilly temperatures in the 40s and rainy conditions mean it's the perfect time to don your coziest jumper. Plus, London's rainy day standbys like the Tower of London and the British Museum are typically less crowded at this time of year.

If you're seeking palm-fringed festivities without the need for a passport, look no further than the U.S. Virgin Islands. December is the start of the dry season in this Caribbean island chain, and average temperatures in the 70s and 80s are perfect for lounging on beautiful white sand beaches like Magens Bay or snorkeling in Virgin Islands National Park. Winter in the Alps is never cheap, but try visiting earlier in the month before school holidays for the best room rates.

Make the trek to the Finnish Lapland for the ultimate Arctic experience. Finland's northernmost region promises a deep layer of snow all winter, perfect for skiing or sledding down the longest toboggan run in Europe. Most flights to this region land in Rovaniemi, home to Santa Claus Village, where you can meet the man in red, step across the Arctic Circle or embark on a reindeer sleigh ride. Though you'll only see about four hours of daylight, this makes for prime conditions to view the dazzling aurora borealis from the comfort of one of the glass hotels in the region.

December is one of the most popular months to visit the Bahamas – and for good reason. By the time this month rolls around, the threat of hurricanes has passed, making it terrific time to enjoy the outdoors. But cooler winter temperatures (averages range from the 30s to the 60s, depending on elevation) mean you'll encounter even fewer tourists. While a trip to this intriguing destination won't be cheap, a low-season visit can drive down the price of lodging and tours.

Nestled in southern Chilean Patagonia, this national park offers travelers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Hailed among hikers as one of the most scenic destinations in the world, the park is home to turquoise lakes and dense forests, plus massive Grey Glacier and the towering granite of Cuernos del Paine. December offers up to 17 hours of daylight, allowing plenty of time for extensive hikes. But even though December is part of Patagonia's peak summer season, temperatures drop dramatically after nightfall, so visitors will want to pack layers.

This Hawaiian paradise is the perfect place to escape winter's onset. When thinking about the best places to travel in December, you may be tempted to view the month through the lens of Christmas—which is understandable, given the wealth of cities that go all out for the holidays . And while we’re always down for a European Christmas market or dazzling lights display, there are plenty of reasons to travel this month outside of the holly and the jolly.

Whether you want to get a jumpstart on ski season or escape the winter doldrums in the Caribbean, here are the 12 best places to travel in December.

Miami, Florida

Many people head to Miami in early December for Art Basel Miami Beach , a glittering, four-day confab (scheduled for December 8–10 in 2023) that lures both the fashion and art worlds. The lineup of artists includes 24 first-time participants (out of 277 total) hailing everywhere from New York to Seoul, plus several guest lectures and dining experiences.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Miami beyond the final moments of Art Basel, of course—namely a booming high-end hotel scene. The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort is an art destination in and of itself, with geometric metal walls and massive sculptures hanging from the lobby ceiling. Other luxurious amenities, like private butlers and a gourmet burger bar, make this the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. For a beachier (but just as luxurious) stay, head to The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne , located about 15 miles from South Beach. Its ocean views and tequila-stocked restaurant are great any time of year, but this December welcomes a slew of holiday-themed perks, like eggnog in the lobby and peppermint pedicures in the spa.

Yellowstone National Park

If you haven’t visited Yellowstone in the dead of winter, you are missing out on one of the most incredible travel experiences out there. Not only will you escape the typical summer hoards that make it nearly impossible to see wildlife and popular sites like Old Faithful—starting in December, the park is closed to cars and will only allow snowcoaches and snowmobiles to enter—but the relative quiet and icy chills of winter make our oldest national park feel even more like a mystical wonderland. Just imagine: sleepy bison with snow-dusted beards, bright blue pools set against a blanket of white, and boardwalks billowing with steam from the surrounding thermal features.

There are only a couple of in-park lodges open in the winter, but luckily they are incredibly cozy and convenient. Located in the heart of Yellowstone, Old Faithful Snow Lodge will get an extra dose of holiday magic this December, with trees set up throughout the hotel, in-room Christmas sweets, cookie decorating stations, and visits from Santa. Guests can also book several outdoor excursions from the lodge, ranging from guided snowshoe tours to wildlife photo safaris.

The Azores, Portugal

This once-overlooked archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic is tailor-made for adventurers—think whale watching, hiking calderas, and rappelling down waterfalls. (The island of Terceira is home to the only volcano in the world where visitors can explore a chimney and secondary magma chamber, sitting side by side.) And while tourism has caught up to the Azores within the past decade, visiting during the winter gives you a glimpse of what Eden once looked like.

December isn’t chilly here, despite the archipelago’s Atlantic location—the Gulf Stream keeps the year-round temperatures surprisingly balmy, with the mercury rarely dropping below 60 degrees or so. The island of Santa Maria generally boasts the warmest climate, though swimming may be off the table in the winter. If you’re craving water time, pay a visit to a geothermally heated hot spring instead.

Salzburg, Austria

Germany tends to get most of the attention when it comes to Christmas markets (for good reason), but neighboring Austria can be just as festive and charming—especially in the city of Salzburg. It’s not a surprise that the UNESCO World Heritage -listed Old City, which served as the backdrop for The Sound of Music, also fills its famed Christkindlmarkt with song.

With roots dating back to the 15th century, the market’s sing-alongs and traditional wind music are as much a part of the festivities as the mulled wine and stands selling ornaments and fluffy socks. We’re not mad about the bauernkrapfen (fried pastries), either. The market earns extra points for being just steps away from Hotel Goldener Hirsch , one of the world’s oldest luxury hotels and a perfect spot to warm up between outdoor shopping sprees.

Just down the Caribbean coast from the Yucatán with a fraction of the tourism, Belize has transformed from a backpacker haven into a luxury destination over the past few years. (Bonus: It’s only a five-hour flight from New York.) Along with world-class reefs for diving and Mayan ruins for exploring, the country is known for its conservation efforts, particularly when it comes to protecting ocean life. Many hotels and resorts have jumped on the eco-friendly bandwagon, including Turneffe Island Resort , which goes to great lengths to support the population of Antillean Manatees in the nearby Turneffe Atoll. Guests may get a chance to spot the gentle giants while staying on the resort’s 14-acre private island, while gift shop purchases go straight to the Belize Manatee Conservation Program.

Aside from offering an indulgent, adults-only stay on a true white-sand beach, Matachica Resort & Spa provides interactive workshops to learn about the Belize Barrier Reef, including guided scuba diving trips and helicopter tours. Given that December 4 marks World Wildlife Conservation Day, we say there’s no better time to pay these forward-thinking hotels a visit.

Switzerland

Switzerland is always one of the world’s most beautiful countries, but it becomes downright magical come winter: city squares dusted with snow and mountainsides transformed into the best ski slopes on the planet. It can be hard to pick just one Swiss destination to visit in December, which is why hopping on the Glacier Express is the perfect introduction to this wintery wonderland.

The Glacier Express is an eight-hour train ride that connects two of Switzerland’s biggest mountain resorts—Zermatt and St. Moritz—but it’s really more about the journey than the destination here. The train passes over 290 bridges, delivering panoramic views of landmarks like the Oberalp Pass and Matterhorn, and it even includes three-course meals to really help you enjoy every second of the ride.

Charleston, South Carolina

If you want an immersive Christmas experience but aren’t a fan of cold weather, Charleston is the perfect destination for you. In fact, we’d argue that winter is one of the best times to visit, when temperatures hover around the 50s and 60s. Holiday attractions this year include the 34th Annual Holiday Festival of Lights (November 10–December 31, 2023), featuring an estimated 2 million twinkling lights, and Holiday Swing (December 2, 2023), a concert of reimagined Christmas carols courtesy of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra.

The city has no shortage of fabulous hotels, but some notable properties go all out for the holidays. The French Quarter Inn , voted one of the best hotels in Charleston by our readers, will be fully decked out with a Christmas tree and free gingerbread cookies in the rotunda, while the Sleigh Bell Suite comes with even more festive amenities: an in-room eggnog bar, freshly-baked cookies served by the fireplace, holiday movie screenings, and a special reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas from Santa himself. Whistler, Canada

If you’re desperately seeking slopes, you can’t do much better than the largest ski area in North America. With 8,171 acres of skiable terrain and hills ranging in difficulty from green to double-black, the twin peaks of Whistler Blackcomb truly have something for every winter sports enthusiast. Both the Big Red Express lift and Creekside Gondola were reworked a couple of years ago to hold more people, meaning the mountains will feel far less congested and visitors can enjoy even more rounds of powder.

Once you pack up your poles for the day, soak up all the après glory at Whistler Village. Here you’ll find the resort area’s largest concentration of bars and restaurants, ranging from the buzzy high-end seafood restaurant Wild Blue to the upscale yet relaxed Braidwood Tavern . In terms of hotels, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler looks (and feels) like a true fairy tale castle, nestled at the base of Blackcomb.

Santiago, Chile

​​Travelers often overlook Chile’s capital city in favor of splashier South American destinations like Rio or Buenos Aires—but we encourage you not to make that same mistake. Santiago is not only a superb base for outdoor adventure, thanks to its location between the Andes and the Pacific, but it’s an excellent standalone destination for anyone who loves great food, great wine, and plenty of shopping opportunities.

After exploring the city’s coolest neighborhoods, tack on a side trip to Valparaíso—the former seaport home of Pablo Neruda and current headquarters for the Chilean Navy. It’s just a two-hour drive here from Santiago, but you’ll want to plan to stay overnight (and not just because you’ll be drinking a lot of wine). With its colorful hillside houses and abundance of museum-worthy street art, Valparaíso is not an easy place to say goodbye to.

If you’re anything like us, emerging from two years of lockdowns and closed borders has inspired you to finally book that once-in-a-lifetime trip you’ve always dreamed about—like an expedition to Antarctica , for example. The white continent is at its best from December to March, when wildlife is active and the sun shines for nearly 24 hours a day. And while trips like these typically require a lot of advance planning, there’s still time to book a spot on an expedition cruise ship before 2023 wraps up (although you may want to use this time to start researching for next year).

Ponant has about a dozen sailings available through the end of December, with trips ranging from 10 to 15 nights and including stops in South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. Another great option is Quark Expedition’s “Antarctic Explorer: Discovering the 7th Continent” voyage, an 11-day trip with six departure dates within the month of December (plus many in 2024). Each sailing includes the typical stops, but Quark also started offering a majorly cool add-on a few years ago: alpine heli-trekking, in which guests board a helicopter (just imagine those views) and fly to typically inaccessible terrain to enjoy hiking or snowshoeing.

British Virgin Islands

Made up of more than 60 tropical isles, the British Virgin Islands are easily one of the best places to travel in December. The archipelago is the epitome of Caribbean relaxation with white-sand beaches and lush rainforests—not to mention some of the best hotels in the entire region. Richard Branson’s Necker Island is arguably the most famous resort, freshly reconstructed with an emphasis on sustainability. New wind turbines join the existing solar farm so that the resort runs on 90 percent renewable energy. Even the staff uniforms are made from recycled plastic.

Recent years saw the arrival of two new private island resorts, both of which appeared on our 2022 Hot List . Off the northern end of Virgin Gorda, Saba Rock ’s nine-bedroom boutique hotel boasts a bustling rooftop bar, spacious guest rooms, and a seemingly endless supply of water sports. Meanwhile, Branson struck gold again with Moskito Island , located just two miles away from Necker Island. Guests with deep pockets can choose from three private estate rentals, each with its own distinct style. Amenities like private chefs and house managers available to help 24/7—plus the chance of running into Branson himself on the tennis courts—offer a true taste of a billionaire’s vacation.

Paris shines extra bright during the holiday season, from the lights along the Champs-Élysées to store window displays that rival museum art installations. This year is a particularly great time to plan a trip, with inexpensive nonstop flights with French Bee (France’s first low-cost carrier ) and a crop of new hotel openings. Be one of the first to stay at Bulgari Hotel Paris or Hôtel Madame Rêve , housed in a former 24-hour post office—or choose from one of the many established hotels in the city.

Lake Tahoe, California

1. reykjavik, iceland .

Iceland is a land of extremes, and in winter, the days are incredibly short, the weather is freezing cold, and the landscapes are frozen solid. But don’t let that put you off. In fact, embrace the Icelandic extremes in December, and you’ll have an incredible time exploring this island nation at the “wrong” time of year.

We recommend basing yourself in Reykjavik , where the city very much continues to function, even with temperatures regularly dropping below freezing and no more than five hours of daylight on the longest day of the month. You’ll see a side of Iceland that’s far removed from those long summer days, which are by now a distant memory. 

December is the best time of year to see the Northern Lights, and you can join a tour out into the icy tundra around the Icelandic capital in search of this natural phenomenon. Icelanders are equipped with heavy-duty vehicles to beat the snow, and you can tour through the Golden Circle around Reykjavik, seeing the steaming geysers bursting from the ground and being awed by the frozen waters of Gullfoss. 

And if the cold starts to beat you, there’s nothing better than a dip in thermal waters. Reykjavik’s most famous spa is the Blue Lagoon , and while it’s certainly spectacular, it’s also very touristy. For a fraction of the price, you can visit the local public pools in Reykjavik, which are also all heated by geothermal energy. 

2. Nuremberg, Germany 

Nuremberg is one of the most classic places to visit in Europe in December, and although its Christmas market is one of the busiest in Europe, it’s easily one of our favorite festive experiences. 

Nuremberg is home to gorgeous medieval architecture, and throughout the Advent Season (from late November until Christmas Eve), the Old Town plays host to the centuries-old Christkindlesmarkt . Wooden stalls, carol singers, Christmas lights, and copious quantities of Gluhwein can be found in the Hauptmarkt, and the surrounding streets and squares, as Nurembergers embrace the festive spirit with due aplomb.

You’ll be visiting one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world, with a recorded history dating back to at least the 17th century, and possibly even earlier. There are some unusual traditions at the Christkindlesmarkt, the name of which translates into English as the “Christ Child Market.” 

Local women compete in the run-up to Advent to be selected as the Christ Child, a role which sees them dressed as a white angel in the market’s opening ceremony before making various other appearances throughout Advent. 

Once the market is opened, you can gorge on local dishes like the famous Nurnberger Rostbratwurst (grilled sausages) and lebkuchen (a type of local gingerbread) as you soak up the Christmas festivities in Germany.

3. Edinburgh, United Kingdom 

One of the best places to travel in Europe in December is Edinburgh , a magnificent city that’s gearing up for its Christmas and New Year extravaganzas. 

The Scottish weather is notoriously bleak, and you’ll have to endure low temperatures and regular downpours as you explore the city’s best sights. Luckily, there’s always a cozy pub for you to jump into (try The World’s End ), while Edinburgh’s traditional food is very much geared up for winter (try the haggis, of course). 

Edinburgh has a wealth of indoor attractions to see. Edinburgh Castle ‘s ramparts might be windy, but the museums inside offer a fantastic insight into Scottish history. The National Museum of Scotland is an even deeper dive into the past, while Holyrood Palace and its stately rooms are an excellent place to learn more about the British Royal Family. 

Then there’s the Scottish Parliament , the Museum of Edinburgh , and of course, who can miss out on a visit to The Scotch Whisky Experience ? Throughout December, Christmas markets pop up all over the city, including at the popular East Princes Street Gardens. Stay on for New Year’s and you can immerse yourself in Hogmanay, the traditional Scottish way to round off the old and see in the new. 

4. Bruges, Belgium

Bruges is a fairytale European destination, and if you’re lucky with the winter weather, you may even get to see this Belgian city covered in layers of snow. In particularly cold winters, the city’s canals have even been known to freeze solid, adding to the wintry allure you’re searching for.

Throw tall Christmas trees, carol singers, and Advent light shows into the mix, and you’ve got yourself one of the best places to visit in Europe in December. Market Square in the center of Brugge is thrown over to traditional Christmas market stalls, and you can browse for gifts and souvenirs as you enjoy a warm mug of mulled wine.

There’s a smaller market at Stevinplein, too, while a trip to the Minnewater ice rink has long been a favored Christmas excursion. Bruges is famed for its beers and frites, and in December, you’ll love snuggling up on a heated terrace or in front of a roaring fire as you sample the best brews in the city. For frites, head to the quirky Fritemuseum , where you can learn all about the history of this classic Belgian take on French fries. 

5. Ljubljana, Slovenia 

Ljubljana , with its dragon bridges and turquoise river, is one of our favorite European cities, and December is a surprisingly fun time to visit. Although temperatures can drop below freezing, you’ll love the crisp winter air as you stroll along the tall river banks or take a cruise along the Ljubljanica River.

Ride the funicular to Ljubljana Castle , where you’ll have spectacular views over the red roofs of the city. If it’s raining, pop into the National Museum of Contemporary History or the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum, and if the rain holds off, then explore the street art and galleries of the Metelkova District, a former military district that’s been transformed into a quirky base for artists, activists, and musicians. 

Ljubljana throws itself wholeheartedly into the Christmas spirit, and you can visit the festive markets at Preseren Square, where you can try seasonal Slovenian treats like potica (a sweet, festive bread) while warming up with a hot mug of mulled wine. Slovenian cuisine is hearty and wholesome, too, and you’ll love digging into a big bowl of jota (a stew) or a steaming plate of Štruklji (dumplings) in the cold evenings. 

You can even take a day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled, which is just an hour’s drive north of the Slovenian capital. Hidden away in the Julian Alps, this alpine lake is glorious in the winter, when its mountain peaks are capped with snow. 

6. Dresden, Germany 

Dresden is home to one of the best Christmas market experiences in Europe. This historic German town has hosted its Striezelmarkt since 1434, making this the oldest Christmas market in the world.

Back then, the Striezelmarkt was a simpler one-day market held at some point in the week leading up to Christmas. The market was named after the struzel that was sold here, a specific type of stollen cake that’s eaten in Dresden at Christmas time. 

Today, the Striezelmarkt has expanded over nearly six centuries into a festive market that hosts upwards of 200 stalls in and around the Altmarkt, in Dresden’s old town, for the entire Advent period. It’s busy, it’s historic, it’s fun, and you can enjoy traditional struzel alongside a hot mug of Gluhwein! 

7. Tromso, Norway 

For a seriously unique December experience, why not catch a flight to the Arctic Circle? That might sound just a little crazy, but the winter season is one of the most impressive times to visit Tromso , Norway’s Arctic capital.

Located deep within the Arctic Circle, it’s a 2-hour flight from Oslo to Tromso. Oslo will seem positively tropical in comparison to Tromso, but you’ll quickly fall in love with the unusual way of life eked out this far north.

Daylight is almost nonexistent this time of year, but you’ll come to appreciate the almost ephemeral glow that accompanies the sun’s ragged attempts to rise above the horizon. The city, home to some 65,000 people even in the winter, is surrounded by ice-free fjords, which are spectacular in December. Take a boat cruise in search of the Northern Lights (there’s no better time to see them!) and warm up later with a trip to the sauna. 

Tromso is very much a winter sports playground in December, with ample opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. You can also visit the local Sami people, many of whom still herd reindeer across the tundra. Join a Sami experience to learn about their distinct way of life, their language, and history while meeting the reindeer and enjoying Arctic activities like dogsledding. 

8. Zagreb, Croatia 

Zagreb , the understated Croatian capital, is one of the best places to travel in Europe in December. Zagreb might sit at the crossroads of Central and Southern Europe, but despite having a colorful history that’s been shaped by the Romans, Slavs, Habsburgs, and Yugoslavians, the city is almost always overlooked in the summer months.

Tourists prefer the beaches and islands of Croatia’s Adriatic coastline and ancient walled cities like Split and Dubrovnik. But in the winter, Zagreb really comes into its own, as the city’s squares are filled with festive markets and Christmas cheer (head to Ban Josipa Jelačića Square and King Tomislav Square).

Have your fill of mulled wine and seasonal Croatian treats like fritule (a type of sugary donut), then escape the chill as you tour through Zagreb’s best museums. Start with the curious Museum of Broken Relationships , get nostalgic at the Zagreb ‘80s museum, and explore Yugoslavian art at the Croatian Museum of Naive Art . 

9. Rovaniemi, Finland 

Ask the Finns, and without hesitation, they’ll tell you that, yes, Santa Claus does exist. And how can they be so sure? Well, Finnish people know that Santa Claus lives in Lapland, where there’s an entire city dedicated to Christmas. 

With savvy marketing, Finnish Lapland cornered the Christmas tourist market when they built the Santa Claus Village in 1985. Located just outside of Rovaniemi, a remote city in northern Finland , you can meet Santa, meet the reindeer, and cross the Arctic Circle, which runs through the center of the village.

It’s the perfect place to find that Christmas cheer, and given how close you are to the Arctic Circle, it’s a guaranteed white December. Rovaniemi has become a trendy winter break destination in recent years, and in addition to visiting Santa Claus Village, you can meet reindeer herders, learn about the Sami way of life, ride snowmobiles, and learn how to dog sled, too!

10. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is a fantastic city to visit no matter the season, but we particularly enjoy the Hungarian capital in December. 

We love the festive hubbub in the city’s Christmas markets, where huge portions of hot goulash are served in enormous, hollowed-out bread bowls. There’s pork knuckle, kolbasz sausages, and chimney cakes, while the mulled wine and palinka (a local type of schnapps) are free-flowing in the winter air.

Wrap up warm and you can spend your getaway bouncing from one market to the next. Start in Vorosmarty Square, where you can find the biggest market in Budapest, stroll along to St. Stephen’s Basilica, where carol singers liven the streets, and then cross the Danube to Buda, where traditional Hungarian gifts are sold on the hill from wooden market stalls. 

Budapest can get cold in December, with temperatures frequently dropping to lows of 0°C. That makes the city’s famous thermal baths all the more welcome, and you’ll love dipping into the warm waters of the Gellert Thermal Bath or enjoying the delightful contrast of the heated outdoor pools at the Széchenyi Baths , which are the largest in Budapest.

11. Canary Islands, Spain

So far, we’ve focused on the classic wintery experiences you can enjoy in Europe, but we know that not everyone enjoys the cold. In fact, some people just want to escape the colder climes of northern Europe and find themselves a little winter sun in December.

If that’s you, then you’ll want to book yourself a flight to the Canary Islands . Although they’re part of Spain, the Canary Islands are located a good two-hour flight south of Madrid, and they’re closer to Africa than they are to mainland Europe. The islands – of which there are eight, including Gran Canaria , Tenerife , and La Gomera – are very much Spanish in character, having been ruled by Spain since the 15th century. 

The Canary Islands are positively warm in December, with temperatures reaching highs of 21°C or 70°F (compare that to Iceland, Norway, or Finland, where temperatures rarely rise above freezing!). You can score great deals on flights and resorts, which are much quieter in the low season, and you might even find it warm enough to take a dip in the sea. 

12. Zermatt, Switzerland 

If you love snowcapped mountains and winter scenes, Zermatt is one of the coolest places to visit in Europe in December. This is one of Switzerland ‘s most iconic mountain getaways, and the small town of some 6,000 people sits at an altitude of 1,620 meters (5,315 feet) above sea level.

This means that in December, you can expect Zermatt to already have a smattering of snow. The town sits in the shadow of the famed Matterhorn, a distinctive mountain peak that rises to a height of 4,478 meters (14,692 feet). 

Although the Matterhorn is Switzerland’s most recognizable mountain, Zermatt is, in fact, surrounded by other, higher mountains, too, including Monte Rosa, which at 4,634 meters (15,203 feet) is the highest mountain in the country.

You can learn about the history of Zermatt and its association with mountaineering at the Matterhorn Museum before taking the cable car to Klein Matterhorn, which sits at an altitude of 3,883 meters (12,740 feet). In December, the ski season might just be starting, in which case you can rent a chalet and hit the slopes of the Swiss Alps. 

Zermatt really is an adventure playground, and you can try your hand at everything from mountaineering to tobogganing. The town is also located at the end of the Glacier Express, one of the most spectacular mountain train rides in Europe. 

13. Vienna, Austria

Vienna is a dream in winter, which is why the Austrian capital is one of the best places to go in Europe in December. 

Vienna’s festive season is already in full swing, as the city’s Christmas markets will already have opened to great fanfare at the end of November. The Advent Season in Austria is long but eventful, and the build-up to Christmas sees Vienna’s public squares packed out daily with market stalls and carol singers.

5 big travel lessons and one ‘mistake’ from 50 years of Lonely Planet

Tony Wheeler has spent half a century traversing the globe but still carries a guidebook. Naturally, it’s his own.

“Just a couple days ago in Brazil, I went to Iguazu Falls,” Wheeler, 76, said during a recent video call from a hotel guest room in New York City . “I went across to Argentina and had the Lonely Planet guidebook. It said to take the walk close to the river level because everybody heads to the top one. You know, the guidebook got it right.”

Wheeler and his wife, Maureen, founded Lonely Planet guidebooks 50 years ago. In 1972, the newly married couple bought a ratty old car in London and drove east, across Europe, and then farther east, to Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan, where they sold their vehicle. In Australia, their final stop, one adventure ended and another began.

Their first publication, “Across Asia on the Cheap,” spawned more than 150 million guidebooks covering 221 countries. It also heralded a new generation of travelers who were young, adventurous and scrappy. Like true rebels, they ventured where few parents had gone before.

“These were books for people in their 20s with no money,” he said. “If their parents had gone to Europe, they were going to Asia. If they were in Europe, they were going down to Spain and across to Morocco. Instead of escaping the States to Mexico, they’d go down to South America. Their horizons were getting larger, wider.”

In 2011, the Wheelers, who split their time between London and Melbourne, Australia, sold their publishing company. Red Ventures, which also owns the Points Guy , took over in 2020. Although they are no longer actively involved in the series and have upgraded their travel style, they still embody the spirit of the “ backpacker’s bible.”

The day after Tony returned from South America, he shared some of the lessons he has learned from his 50 spins around the Lonely Planet.

1. Always carry on

Mishaps happen to even the most seasoned traveler, and you just have to roll with it.

During his recent trip in Brazil, the airline repeatedly canceled his flight to New York. He spent four hours standing in line at the airport counter trying to sort it out. “You can fly across the Atlantic in the Concorde in that amount of time and have a meal, as well,” he said dryly.

Also this year, an incident in France forced the railway to shut down its entire line. Then a torrential rainstorm hit. “I was standing around on a platform with rain pouring down for four hours,” he said.

Wheeler gamely acknowledged that a traveler’s best material often comes from plans that went awry.

“People like to hear the bad stuff,” he said. “No one wants to hear that my flight left on time, my seat was the one I wanted, I liked the meal and my baggage turned up.”

Speaking of lost luggage, he avoids it by limiting himself to carry-on . He said an opera singer friend would have significantly reduced her stress level had she followed suit. On her flight from Munich to his London home, the airline lost her bags. Several days later, a delivery man drove up in a vehicle packed with hundreds of pieces of luggage waiting to be reunited with their owners.

2. Travel for the people, not the politics

Of all the travel guides, Wheeler said Burma caused them the most angst. At the time, people were urged to boycott the country to avoid indirectly aiding the brutal military regime. After several research trips, the couple decided to publish the book in 1979, but encouraged travelers to support local businesses and not government-owned ones.

“The locals really wanted the tourists, and it wasn’t just for the money,” Wheeler said. “It was for the communication with the outside world.”

Wheeler is similarly conflicted by Iran. “The government’s awful, but the people are wonderful,” he said. To illustrate this point, he described the heartwarming interactions he repeatedly experienced in restaurants. Diners would notice that he was eating alone and spoke English and would invite him to join them at their table.

“How often does that happen in a restaurant in England or America?” he said. “In Iran, that does happen and I think it’s kind of amazing.”

The eighth edition of “Lonely Planet Iran” is scheduled for released next December, an update to the 2017 version.

3. Trust your research and instincts

On the subject of crime, Wheeler has been fortunate: He has been a victim only once, when he was mugged in Bogotá, Colombia. He said travelers should thoroughly research a destination but also trust their instincts.

“Things are not always as unsafe as you fear they are,” he said. “Once you get to a place and are out in the streets, you will feel if it is okay or not.”

On a family trip in Guatemala City, the Wheelers set out at night in search of food. The streets were empty and unnerving. But the next morning, they discovered an entirely different city — vibrant, lively, safe.

Wheeler has ventured to more than 170 countries, including many that have faced conflict, such as Syria, Libya and Yemen. He does not take safety lightly. He is intrigued by Nigeria — “It’s the center for movies in Africa and has a lot of entrepreneurial activity ” — but is cautious about visiting Africa’s most populous nation because of safety concerns. Many foreign offices, including the State Department, advise travelers against visiting Nigeria.

“You start with the idea that it’s not going to be totally safe,” he said, “but I’d like to see it one day.”

4. Explore ‘two streets over’ from main drag

For countless travelers, Lonely Planet opened the door to unknown or undiscovered places, but some critics say the books worked too well and have led to overcrowding. Wheeler’s solution to overtourism is actually a Lonely Planet tenet. He recommends always going “two streets over” from the main drag for sightseeing as well as shopping, dining and lodging.

“Everyone is in St. Mark’s Square,” he said of Venice. “There are other parts of the city you can go to and find churches that are not crowded with tourists.”

Another option: Skip the popular destination for a lesser-visited city, such as Ravenna, which he described as the opposite of Venice. “It almost felt like it was undertouristed,” he said.

5. Choose a train over plane

This year, Wheeler has traveled by train in a dozen countries. He said his best train experience was on Amtrak ’s Coast Starlight train from Seattle to San Francisco.

“It was a nice train, and there was quite a lot of conversation at the tables in the bar,” he said. “It was what train travel is supposed to be.”

When possible, he chooses more eco-friendly modes of travel. For a return trip from Lugano, Switzerland, he took the slower but greener route home: train from Zurich to Paris, then Eurostar to London. In Uruguay and Paraguay, he relied on trains and buses, which have vastly improved since his last overland adventures.

“My bus travel years in South America was a long time ago,” he said. “It felt dangerous all the time, the buses were uncomfortable and the bus stations were not good places to be.”

This time around, the bus station in Montevideo, Uruguay, was modern and had a great breakfast spot. The buses were comfortable and safe. The seats came with belts that people actually wore. There was a toilet onboard.

“It was definitely a real change from 40 years ago,” he said.

6. ‘A 50-year mistake’

The company’s name did not stem from a romantic notion about connecting travelers or making the world a less forlorn place, but instead from a 1971 documentary film called “Mad Dogs and Englishmen.”

Over too much red wine at a Chilean restaurant in Sydney, the Wheelers discussed the film’s song “Space Captain” and the opening lines sung by Joe Cocker: “Once I was traveling across the sky; this lovely planet caught my eye.”

Smitten with the lyrics, Tony suggested calling the series, “Lonely Planet.” Maureen agreed, but pointed out the misheard word. “It’s been a 50-year mistake,” he said.
