Spirit of Tahoe yacht arrives on South Shore

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The Spirit of Tahoe has cruised across the country by water and land and is almost ready for launch at Lake Tahoe.

The 75-foot long by 21 foot wide passenger yacht, that will eventually host daily public cruises, finished its 3,000-mile journey when was hauled to South Lake Tahoe late Monday evening.

The Spirit, owned by Tahoe Cruises, is designed to haul up to 133 passengers and will visit lake destinations such as Emerald Bay and the East Shore. The yacht features two full bars, a snack bar on the upper deck and a state of the art, full color, three dimensional sonar that can see all the way to the bottom of the lake, even at its deepest point of over 1,600 feet, said a press release.

The Spirit was purchased in Fort Myers, Florida and traveled over 1,000 miles by water to Galveston, Texas where it was updated for the needs of Lake Tahoe.

After the makeover, the boat was hauled over 1,900 miles by land to arrive at its new home at the Ski Run Marina.

Tahoe Cruises has been taking guests out on the lake since 1979 and is currently known for operating the Safari Rose, which has been voted Best Cruise on the Lake four years running. The Safari Rose, built in 1959 for the 3M corporation, has cruised out of Ski Run Marina since 2017.

The Safari Rose will be focused on private charters and weddings while the Spirit will focus on daily public cruises in 2022. The owners hope to have it ready for cruises at the beginning of next year.

Though we weren’t traveling with the kiddos on this trip, we did notice that two of our fellow passengers were about their age. They seemed to be having the time of their lives exploring the boat and even had a turn at the wheel.

Lake Tahoe Bleu Wave’s 70-foot yacht was built in 1966. It has a capacity for up to 47 passengers, but seats are limited to 30 on cruises for guests’ comfort. The Tahoe Gal is another of Tahoe’s popular paddle wheelers. This one is a bit smaller, allowing up to 120 passengers onboard. Unlike most of the Lake Tahoe Boat Tours featured in this post, the Tahoe Gal departs from Tahoe City on the north side of the lake, making it a great option for visitors lodging near Kings Beach or Incline Village.

Tahoe Gal cruises are available May through October and vary in length depending on the type of tour you book. The 3.5-hour lunch cruise goes all the way to Emerald Bay, while the shorter Brunch, Happy Hour and Dinner cruises take guests along the West Shore. Godfather fans will be happy to note that these West Shore cruises pass Fleur Du Lac, where Godfather II was filmed.

What is the biggest visitor complaint of lake tahoe boat tour passengers.

Parking! Most Lake Tahoe boat tours leave from crowded marinas. Passengers feel that they arrive in plenty of time, only to be stuck trying to find a parking space. In a worst-case scenario, you may even miss the boat altogether. 

If your tour company offers a shuttle, you should strongly consider taking it. Taxis, Ubers, and Lyfts are also good options for a stress-free departure experience. 

What should I bring on a Lake Tahoe Boat Tour?

As with most outdoor activities in Lake Tahoe, wear layers and plan for any kind of weather. You may get hot under the overhead sun and then chilly after the sun sets. At a minimum, make sure to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a jacket or sweatshirt, and a towel and swimsuit if you plan to jump in the lake! 

Also, don’t forget a camera. Emerald Bay is a top stop on many boat tours and it's one of the most photographed areas in the country!

What is a bareboat charter?

You may notice that some of the boat charter options offer a “bareboat charter” which allows for greater capacity than the full-service charter option. 

A Bareboat Charter is required by the Coast Guard when there are more than 6 passengers on an uninspected passenger vessel for hire. If you hire a Bareboat Charter, you are required to rent the boat yourself and pay for a Captain separately. Many boat charter companies will provide you with an in-house Captain for an additional fee. 

It’s best to talk with each company about their requirements for Bareboat Charters directly.

What is the famous boat on Lake Tahoe?

Many Lake Tahoe visitors are familiar with the large paddle-wheeler MS Dixie II, which docks at Zephyr Cove. But Lake Tahoe history buffs might have a different answer. 

The Thunderbird Lodge National Historic Site is home to one of the country’s most recognizable wooden speedboats, the Thunderbird yacht. The Thunderbird once transported guests between Lake Tahoe’s high-mountain estates and luxury resorts. 

Cruises on the Thunderbird Yacht are available for sponsors of the Lodge during a few private excursions each year. 

How much does it cost to go boating in Lake Tahoe?

The cost of boating on Lake Tahoe depends on the type of experience you book. If you book a ticket on a public boat cruise, expect to pay anywhere from $70 - $150 per person (sometimes kids get a discounted ticket). If you book a private charter, expect to pay around $700 for a two-hour experience and then more depending on the length of your booking.

Tahoe Cruises’ Spirit of Tahoe will wrap up its 1,900-mile journey across land from Texas when it arrives at Lake Tahoe early next week.

The 75-foot-long passenger boat can accommodate 133 people. It was purchased in Ft. Meyers, Fla., and made a 1,000-mile sea journey to Galveston, Texas, where it was refitted for Tahoe, according to the company.

The boat was then towed from Texas, arriving in Carson Valley on Wednesday, drawing considerable attention. It made the winding journey through Douglas County on Highway 395 over the Pine Nut Mountains then over to Foothill Road and south to Highway 88 where it spent the night on Thursday.

The 21-foot-wide craft has two full bars and a snack bar, and will join the company’s Safari Rose.

The Spirit of Tahoe will make its new home at Ski Run Marina where it will focus on daily public cruises.

The company said the Spirit will sport a state-of-the-art full-color 3D sonar that will be able to see even the Lake’s deepest points at 1,600 feet.

Tahoe Cruises has been taking guests out on the lake since 1979 and is currently operates the Safari Rose, which has been voted Best Cruise on the Lake four years running.

The Safari Rose has cruised out of Ski Run Marina since 2017 and is a favorite classic yacht, originally built in 1959 for the 3M corporation. The Safari Rose will continue to cruise on Lake Tahoe and will be focused on private charters and weddings.

Beautiful sunny day and the cruise was everything we expected. Captain was very informative and it was a great mix of commentary and music. The Lake is absolutely gorgeous! Moscow Metro – Spirit of a City EP | Review

That populist revival hasn’t really let up since – just look at White Lies, Airbourne Toxic Event, and too many other bands to name here – and, with the release of their debut EP, ‘Spirit of a City’, Limerick band Moscow Metro are the latest to join the cause. Here, they’ve offered up four tracks in that dark and brooding vein, which, although solid and polished in their own right, sound perhaps too close to the myriad of others that have gone before them to leave any real lasting mark.

What the four-piece has produced is an exploration of the kind of themes perfect for moody posturing (death, break-ups, social ennui), underpinned by an expansive and echo-laden soundscape. Drums pound and crash behind speedy, driving guitars and synths, building towards almost-anthemic hooks. Seán Corcoran’s vocals, meanwhile, take on rich, sober tones uncannily close to Matt Berninger of The National, which often counteract the insistence of the music behind them.

It’s a well-constructed, well-produced and confident record, but the problem is that there’s not enough distinction between the tracks to make any particular one stand out, and they sound so close to their influences that it actually gets distracting. Opener Spirit of a City ? It may as well be that Editors track being belted out on a dancefloor back in the day. Future Fades and Where It All Ends ? They could be old lost demo tapes from The National. If you toned the synth down, you could probably even throw the remaining track, Headlights , into that latter category as well.

Is it a bad thing to know what you like and be influenced by that? No. Is it a bad thing to know what you like so well that it becomes less of an influence and more of an identity? Probably. It’s a pity that Moscow Metro haven’t pushed outside the post-rock revivalist boundaries with this EP. There’s clearly a lot of talent and energy there; it would be good to see that used to make something other than the well-worn sound of ten years ago.
