How much do Romanians overeat on all inclusive holidays?

Romanian men eat more than women during their stay at all inclusive hotels at the Romanian seaside, but they never eat everything on their plates, according to the Mareea travel agency, which manages an all inclusive hotel in the Mamaia seaside resort.
“Usually, at all inclusive, men place an average of 2.5 food portions of food from each dish on their plates, but a big part of it remains uneaten, while women eat normal portions of food,” according to the study, cited by local Mediafax.
Moreover, 70% of Romanian women tend to eat vegetables, such as salads or soy products, to lower the impact on their figure.
In men’s case, the favorite dishes at all inclusive hotels include the popular Romanian minced meat dish called mici, smoked sausages, roast pork and beef, the spicy pan, and sheep pastrami.
In general, those who choose all inclusive services for the Romanian seaside are families aged 30 to 50, most of them with one or two children.
Last year, there were over 6,700 places in all inclusive hotels on the Romanian seaside. So far, these hotels’ capacity increased by 581 places.
Mareea, owned by Romanian Marius Usturoiu, is one of the largest travel agencies in Romania. For this year, the agency estimates that tourist traffic to the Black Sea will increase by 10%.

Ultimate Travel Guide to Moorea: French Polynesia’s Most Underrated Island
Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. Please see our Disclosure Policy and Advertiser Disclosure for details.
Imagine an island where the mountains meet the sea, creating landscapes that seem to leap out of a dream. Welcome to Moorea, the heart of French Polynesia, a paradise that’s more than just stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. We just got back from our honeymoon on this beautiful island and we were absolutely blown away.
In this guide, we’ll explore the best of the Tahitian island of Moorea, offering insights and tips tailored for all adventurous travelers. We’ll go over everything from where to stay on Moorea, to the best things to do, to things you need to know before you go. We spent a few days on the island as we were island hopping around French Polynesia, and can honestly say it was our favorite in terms of things to do! Let’s dive in!
Why Moorea Over Other Tahitian Islands?
Nestled in the Pacific Ocean, Moorea is a volcanic island known for its breathtaking landscapes. From jagged peaks like Mount Rotui to the serene Opunohu and Cook’s Bays, the island’s natural beauty is unmatched. The climate here is tropical and welcoming, perfect for year-round exploration.
Not only is Moorea a tropical escape, but it’s also much more affordable compared to it’s sister islands of Bora Bora and Tahiti. The overwater bungalow experience is a fraction of the cost of what it is on Bora Bora. That being said, you do need to stay on top of making your hotel reservations because Moorea has fewer hotel options and is much smaller.
Additionally, we personally thought the island had much more to do in regards to adventurous activities if you’re the “go go go” kind of traveler on vacation, while also offering a nice mix of peaceful relaxation if you desire. From swimming with humpback whales, to ATVing, to hiking to jaw dropping viewpoints, there is a lot to do around the island.
Planning Your Trip to Moorea
When is the best time to visit moorea.
The ideal time to visit Moorea is during the dry season from May to October . You’ll enjoy sunny days perfect for outdoor adventures. During these months, the weather is more favorable with less rainfall, lower humidity, and comfortable temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the island’s natural beauty.
However, it’s worth noting that this is also the peak tourist season, so you might encounter more crowds and higher prices. If you prefer a quieter experience and don’t mind occasional rain showers, visiting during the shoulder season (April or November) can be a good compromise, offering a balance between pleasant weather and fewer tourists.
Best Time to Swim with the Humpback Whales in Moorea
Now, if you are visiting specifically with the goal of swimming with the humpback whales, you have to time your trip to Moorea correctly. The opportunity to swim with humpback whales typically occurs during the whale migration season, which usually extends from August to November . This is when humpback whales migrate to the warm, shallow waters of Moorea and surrounding islands to breed and give birth. As of 2024, only tours booked between August 1 – November 11 are permitted to swim with the whales per new government regulations.
During this period, the chances of encountering these magnificent creatures are higher, and various tour operators offer guided whale-watching and swimming excursions, adhering to strict regulations to ensure the safety and well-being of both the whales and participants. We opted to visit during the second week of October, and had perfect weather and saw a ton of whales!
How Long to Visit Moorea
We would recommend spending at least 3-5 days on the island of Moorea. If you are planning an island hopping trip around the Society Islands of French Polynesia, we would recommend spending more time on Moorea than on Tahiti (in our opinion).
How to Get to Moorea
Taking the Fast Ferry from Tahiti
The ferry departs from Papeete, the capital city of Tahiti, located at the ferry terminal in the downtown area. There are two main fast ferry operators, Aremiti and Terevau , offering regular services between Tahiti and Moorea. Ferries typically run multiple times a day, with the journey taking about 30 to 45 minutes.
It’s advisable to check the latest schedules on the operators’ websites as they can change. Tickets can be purchased either online in advance or directly at the ferry terminal, and they cost about $12 per adult each way. During peak travel times, it’s wise to book in advance. If you are traveling to Moorea on a budget, we’d recommend taking the ferry.
Flying from Tahiti to Moorea
There are no direct international flights that fly into Moorea. No matter which airline you book, you will have to transit through Tahiti’s airport and clear customs before continuing to Moorea. This is the option that we personally opted for. We purchased an inter-island flight pass from Air Tahiti so we could easily fly between a ton of different islands seamlessly. Ours cost about $600 and we were able to use it to hop between five different islands. If you are visiting fewer islands, it will probably range between $300-$500 per person. You have the option of booking flights from either Air Tahiti or Air Moana. Flights depart from Faa’a International Airport in Tahiti and typically run a few times a day.
Whether you choose the quick flight or the scenic ferry ride, traveling from Tahiti to Moorea is a straightforward process, offering you a glimpse of the stunning beauty of French Polynesia right from the start of your journey.
How to Get Around the Island
Once on the island, renting a scooter or car is the best way to explore at your own pace. Keep in mind, the island is very small, and has very few rental cars available. And there are even fewer rental cars with an automatic transmission. If you want to book one, make your reservation several months in advance. You can book via EUROPCAR or Avis .
Or, perhaps, you might get lucky with the Hello Car app like we did. Make sure to download this before you arrive. This app is similar to Lime Scooters or Bird in which you can rent the car for a few hours a day. Keep in mind, they are typically only Manual transmission cars, not automatic.
If you don’t choose either of these options, you will be at the mercy of hiring taxis or tour operators to get around and there are not many on the island. In this case, we’d recommend arranging airport pickup and drop off through your accommodations if possible as well. Make sure your phone works while visiting Moorea, we’d recommend getting an E-SIM at the Tahiti airport!
Accommodation Options
From budget-friendly hostels to luxurious overwater bungalows, Moorea caters to all preferences and budgets. Traveling to Moorea truly doesn’t have to break the bank. You can save a ton of money by staying in guesthouses or bed and breakfasts! There are several great VRBO options with fantastic views of the island and gorgeous pools and amenities.
Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort
We opted to stay at the Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort . We had an amazing experience at this resort. The staff were incredibly friendly, the overwater bungalows were absolutely stunning, and they had Temae Beach and the airport super close by! The water was truly so blue and turquoise, it was jaw dropping and the beach was beautiful. They provide kayaks, paddle boards, and snorkeling equipment for you as well since there is a ton of great snorkeling on the property.
The only cons of staying here are that it’s further away from town than other resorts on the island so if you don’t have a rental car, you might be spending a bit more on getting in/out of town for dining or shopping. The food here was decent, but not amazing, so just keep that in mind! Because of the location, we ate here a lot, but if we were to do it again we would avoid the French Polynesian buffet night and eat more at the restaurants in town.
You can check out our full review and experience on the hotel below!
Top Things to Do in Moorea
Swim with the humpback whales (seasonal).
As we previously mentioned, Moorea is a haven for humpback whales during late summer into early fall. We opted to book two different humpback whale experiences so we would theoretically have better chances of seeing them out in the open. Since there’s no guarantee you will see them when booking a tour, we’d recommend booking at least two options to increase your odds. We booked both a private and a public tour with Moorea Moana Adventures and we highly recommend them to anyone wanting to do this experience for a fun, ethical company.
That being said, we were able to swim with a few different sets of mom and calf whales both times we went out on the water! It was truly the most breathtaking experience ever. Swimming with these majestic animals was one of the highlights of all of our travels.
In order to do this activity, make sure you are able to swim in open water at least 100yds, as you will have to swim to the whales when they breach since the boat has restrictions on how close it can get to them.
Head Out on an ATV Tour
Doing an ATV tour was definitely one of the highlights of our time on Moorea. It was about a half day tour and the guides take you around to see the island’s best viewpoints.
You will start out on your ATV exploring the sprawling pineapple fields around Moorea. Then, you head towards the Belvedere lookout and can enjoy the amazing views of the Cook’s and Opunohu Bays. We opted for the longer tour so we got to go to the Rotui juice factory and had a snack, and ended the tour by heading up to the most beautiful viewpoint of the island, the “Magic Mountain”, for sunset.
You can book the exact tour we did here !
There are a ton of scuba diving shops around the island if you are scuba certified or are interested in getting your PADI certification! We saw a ton of sharks, beautiful colorful coral reefs, eagle rays, and an abundance of unique tropical fish. We loved our 2 tank dive with Ia Ora Diving , which you can book online in advance or at the dive shop on the Sofitel’s property.
Swim with Stingrays and Sharks
Moorea is home to some incredible snorkeling areas bustling with sea life! We highly recommend getting out on the water and doing some sort of tour where you are able to swim with all of the reef sharks and stingrays. Don’t worry, they are not dangerous! In fact, the stingrays were so playful and loved getting pets from everyone on the tour.
Go Hiking Around the Island
Afareaitu Waterfalls
This is an easier hike, about 1 mile long, leading to two beautiful waterfalls. The trail can be rocky and slippery, especially in the rainy season, so good hiking shoes are recommended. The larger waterfall is about 100 feet high, offering a spectacular view and a refreshing swim
Belvedere Lookout
While many drive or ATV to this viewpoint, hiking to Belvedere Lookout offers a more adventurous experience. The hike is moderate in difficulty and the length varies depending on your starting point. The trail goes through the jungle, offering shade but can be steep, rocky, and slippery. The lookout provides stunning views of both Opunohu and Cook’s Bays and Mount Rotui.
Magic Mountain
This hike is relatively easy but includes some steep sections. You are following a road most of the way. It takes you to a lookout point with stunning views of Opunohu Bay. The trail is about 2 miles long and takes around 30 minutes to one hour to ascend. There’s a small $2 fee for the hike, payable at the nearby restaurant so make sure you have cash on you. This hike is suitable for those with a decent fitness level and is also family-friendly
Three Pines Trail
This hike is a beginner to intermediate hiking trail. It’s about 1.9 miles round trip with 493 ft of elevation gain, so it’s moderately steep. You can find all of the trail data here . Parking can be a bit tough because of the small amount of spots by the trailhead, so make sure to get there early! Keep an eye out for a fun scenic swing at the end of the trail. If you’d like to go with a guide, you can book this hike here .
Three Coconuts Trail
This beautiful Moorea hiking trail is more geared toward intermediate and advanced hikers. It’s a longer 4.1 mile day hike round trip with almost 1000 ft of elevation gain. For the full trail data on All Trails, click here . The trail is fully carved out for you, but it does have a few stream crossings, so make sure to wear good waterproof hiking shoes . There are a few more technical sections with ropes, similar to hikes in Hawaii , but they really are just there to help you in the event that the trail is muddy.
Go Paddle Boarding near Temae Beach
Paddle boarding on Temae Beach was a peaceful, beautiful experience! We opted to rent the paddle boards offered by the Sofitel and took them out for about an hour. There’s a ton of coral in the area you can see from above and the water is absolutely stunning in this area.

Russia Travel Advisory
Travel advisory june 27, 2024, russia - level 4: do not travel.
Reissued after periodic review with minor edits.
Do not travel to Russia due to the consequences of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces. U.S. citizens may face harassment or detention by Russian security officials, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, limited flights into and out of Russia, and the possibility of terrorism. The U.S. Embassy has limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia. The Department has determined that there is a continued risk of wrongful detention of U.S. nationals by Russian authorities. U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Russia should leave immediately.
The U.S. government has limited ability to help U.S. citizens in Russia, especially outside of Moscow. The U.S. Embassy is operating with reduced staffing, and the Russian government has restricted travel for embassy personnel. Furthermore, all U.S. consulates in Russia have suspended operations, including consular services.
There have been reports of drone attacks and explosions near the border with Ukraine as well as in Moscow, Kazan, and St. Petersburg. In an emergency, you should follow instructions from local authorities and seek shelter.
Russia may refuse to recognize your U.S. citizenship if you are a dual U.S.-Russian citizen or have a claim to Russian citizenship. Russia has denied consular officers visits to detained dual U.S.-Russian citizens. The Russian government has forced citizens with dual nationality to join the Russian military and prevented them from leaving the country. In 2022, the Russian government mobilized citizens for its invasion of Ukraine. Military conscription continues.
In Russia, the rights to peaceful assembly and free speech are not always protected. U.S. citizens should avoid protests and taking photos of security staff at these events. Russian authorities have arrested U.S. citizens who joined protests. Moreover, there are many reports of Russians being detained for social media posts.
U.S. citizens should know that U.S. credit and debit cards no longer work in Russia. Due to sanctions, sending electronic money transfers from the U.S. to Russia is nearly impossible.
Commercial flight options are minimal and are often unavailable on short notice. If you wish to depart Russia, you should make independent arrangements. The U.S. Embassy has limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in leaving the country, and transportation options may suddenly become even more restricted.
Click here for Information for U.S. Citizens Seeking to Depart Russia.
U.S. Embassy staff generally are not allowed to fly on Russian airlines due to safety concerns. Recently, the FAA downgraded Russia's air safety rating from Category 1 to Category 2. Additionally, the FAA banned U.S. flights in some Russian areas, including the Moscow Flight Information Region (FIR), the Samara FIR (UWWW), and the Rostov-na-Donu (URRV) FIR within 160NM of the boundaries of the Dnipro (UKDV) Flight Information Regions. Check the FAA's Prohibitions, Restrictions, and Notices for more information.
Country Summary:
Russian officials have interrogated and threatened U.S. citizens without cause. This includes former and current U.S. government and military personnel and private U.S. citizens engaged in business. U.S. citizens may become victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion.
Russian authorities may not notify the U.S. Embassy about the detention of a U.S. citizen and may delay U.S. consular assistance. Russian security services also target foreign and international organizations they consider “undesirable.”
Russian security services have arrested U.S. citizens on false charges, denied them fair treatment, and convicted them without credible evidence. Furthermore, Russian authorities have opened questionable investigations against U.S. citizens engaged in religious activity. U.S. citizens should avoid travel to Russia.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has destabilized security in southwestern Russia. In October 2022, the Russian government declared martial law in the following border areas with Ukraine: Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod, Voronezh, Rostov, and Krasnodar. Under martial law, authorities can set curfews, seize property, and restrict movement. The Russian government may detain foreigners, forcibly relocate residents, and limit public gatherings. U.S. citizens should avoid all travel to these areas.
Russian authorities have questioned, detained, and arrested people for “acting against Russia's interests.” Local authorities have targeted people for posting on social media or supporting "anti-Russian" groups and punished individuals for criticizing the government or military. The Russian government's current "LGBT propaganda" law bans discussion of LGBTQI+ related topics. In November 2023, the Supreme Court labeled the so-called "international LGBT movement" as extremist. This decision effectively made it a crime to support the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons in Russia.
Terrorists continue to plan attacks in Russia. The March 2024 Crocus City Hall incident proved they can strike suddenly. Terrorists may target tourist areas, transport hubs, and markets. They may also target government buildings, hotels, clubs, restaurants, and places of worship. Parks, events, schools, and airports are also potential targets. U.S. government employees under Embassy (Chief of Mission) security responsibility are not permitted to travel to the North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mt. Elbrus. U.S. citizens should avoid travel to those areas.
The international community does not recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea and does not acknowledge Russia’s purported annexation of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya. Russia staged its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, in part, from occupied Crimea and there is a heavy Russian military presence in these areas. There is intense fighting across these regions and Russian authorities there have abused both foreigners and locals. Authorities have specifically targeted individuals who are seen as challenging Russia’s authority.
The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv administers consular services to U.S. citizens in Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya. However, the conflict limits the Embassy's ability to help U.S. citizens in these areas.
Read the country information page for additional information on travel to Russia.

Is It Safe in Moscow?
Stanislav Solntsev / Getty Images
When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.
Travel Advisories
- The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
- Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping, and risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory and abuses by its occupying authorities."
- Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.
Is Moscow Dangerous?
The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.
Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.
Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.
Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?
Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.
Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?
Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.
Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers
Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.
Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers
Moscow and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.
Safety Tips for Travelers
Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:
- It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
- If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
- Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
- Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
- Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.

Moscow Travel Guide
Why Go To Moscow
Moscow's opulence and high culture is a sight to be seen. Forget what you learned about Russia in grade school. This lavish capital of a formerly communist nation has fully embraced the luxuries, excesses and decadence of Western capitalism. Like many former Soviet countries, Mother Russia struggles to successfully confront issues of widespread poverty, alcoholism, failing healthcare, and environmental protection. But Moscow has burgeoned into one of the most expensive, exclusive and largest travel destinations in the world. It comes complete with world-class museums, magnificent palaces, $1,000-a-night hotels, "face-control" nightclubs and internationally-renowned restaurants. Don't think you can afford Moscow? Don't be afraid. You can still find affordable deals if you are vigilant. This metropolis has a big and bold character and grandiose setting that's definitely worth getting to know.

Moscow Travel Tips
Best months to visit.
The best time to visit Moscow is April and May, when the temperature creeps into the 50s and 60s, the sun begins to shine for significant portions of the day, and hotel rates have yet to skyrocket into peak ranges. Of course, the golden period is summer, when the city is warm and bustling. But if you want to (slightly) spare yourself from the perpetually expensive rates, try the shoulder seasons in the spring and early fall. Preferably spring, since fall experiences more rainfall and less sunlight. Winters are brutally cold, but this is when you'll get a true glimpse into the Moscow experience (A frost-bitten walk through Red Square seems to intensify the historical significance of this great capital city).
Weather in Moscow

What You Need to Know
A little Russian English is spoken only in major hotels and restaurants, and you'll find mostly Russian speakers in the less tourist-heavy areas. American visitors also struggle with the Cyrillic spellings and pronunciations. Practice some key Russian phrases on the long flight over.
A little tipping Unlike most other European cities, tipping (five to 10 percent) in restaurants is the custom.
A lot of vodka This Russian drink of choice (yes, they usually consume it straight) is found at any bar. But if you wish to taste it and learn about its origins, the Moscow Distillery Cristall is your best bet.
How to Save Money in Moscow
If it seems too good to be true It probably is. Take that proverb to heart in Moscow, and don't expect the Czarist medal you purchased off a street vendor to be worth anything more than a good memory.
If you're oblivious on the subway You'll probably leave several rubles lighter. Pickpockets prey on unsuspecting foreigners in crowded places, particularly metro cars. Beware!
If you're not scared of the dark You may be able to handle Moscow's long nights in fall, winter and spring, when hotels offer the lowest rates. December sees an average of 18 hours of sunlight … in total.
Culture & Customs
English is spoken in major hotels and restaurants, but you'll find mostly Russian speakers in the less tourist-heavy areas, such as at the market or in small inns. Some helpful Russian greetings include the informal hello (pronounced, pri-VET ); the formal hello ( Zdravst-vwee-tye ); the informal goodbye ( pah-KAH ); and the formal goodbye ( Dah svih-DA-nee-ye ). To thank someone, say " Spas-EE-ba ."
What to Eat
Traditional Russian fare focuses on hearty meat dishes and cold soup, a particularly Russian specialty. But don't arrive in Moscow thinking you'll experience only the old cuisine. Russia's new personality has been accompanied by a lavish taste for international cuisine, especially Asian food. Sushi and Asian fusion restaurants are among the most popular in the city, and other dining options include American and Italian cuisine. Eating out, like everything in Moscow, can be very expensive, but you can find cheaper restaurants in shopping centers and areas outside the city center.
Stay alert for pickpockets when using public transport and when visiting the main tourist sites. Many an unsuspecting traveler has been relieved of some rubles on the Moscow Metro and near Red Square. Also, make sure to exercise extra caution when leaving bars and clubs at night.
There have been cases of corrupt police asking for random fines -- if this occurs, get the officer's number and name and ask to go to the police station with him or her.
Getting Around Moscow
The best way to get around Moscow is the metro. Faster and more efficient than the trolley buses and trams, this extensive system has stations that contain beautiful ornamentation, sculptures and mosaics. You could rent a car, but it's best to use public transportation to avoid the city's perpetually congested roads. Plus, street signs are all in Russian. In fact, English signs are nonexistent in the public transit system as well, so it's best to quickly get familiar with a map. Most travelers arrive through Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO), but there are several other airports that serve the metro area. Several buses and a metro line shuttle airport travelers to and from downtown.
Entry & Exit Requirements
Acquiring a visa to travel in Russia is a bit more complicated and expensive than visiting other countries. Every foreign traveler entering Russia must have a Russian-based sponsor (like a hotel, tour company, university or relative). In addition to a valid U.S. passport, you must also obtain a travel visa from a Russian embassy or consulate prior to arriving in Russia. If you plan to stay in Russia for more than seven days, you have to register your visa and migration card (the white paper document given by the border police on first entry to Russia) with the Federal Migration Service. Visas can cost anywhere from $160 to $250 per person, depending on the length of your stay. For more information on entry and exit requirements, visit the U.S. State Department website .
