50 TH  ANNIVERSARY TOUR

MARK FARNER’S AMERICAN BAND

“You can’t talk about rock in the 70s without talking about Grand Funk Railroad.” – David Fricke, Rolling Stone Magazine

Mark Farner  is  the reason. As one of the founding members, lead singer, lead guitarist, and wrote more than 90% of the Grand Funk music catalog, Farner has always been known as the energetic driving force on stage, the engine that pulled the original Grand Funk Railroad to the top of the charts. From his soulful voice and power rock riffs, to fueling the Funk with his atomic stage presence. His story and his imprint on music starts with Flint and since 1969 from his humble beginnings and a blue-collar outlook, Farner has captained a global crusade for love and freedom and became a rock ‘n’ roll icon.

50 years later – he commands the stage with the same intensity performing epic hits that defined a generation – “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)”, “Bad Time”, “Some Kind of Wonderful”, “Foot Stompin’ Music”, “Heartbreaker”, “Locomotion”, “Mean Mistreater” and “We’re An American Band”.

Today, Farner’s amplifying his remarkable career another full decibel selling more than 30 million records worldwide, including 16 gold and platinum albums. Mark Farner’s American Band will honor Farner’s golden anniversary in music, as well as shine a spotlight on his legendary contributions to society, in his 2019-2020 50 th  Anniversary Tour.

“I am who my songs say I am,” Farner said.

Farner’s first years in music were with the band Terry Knight and the Pack and The Bossmen. When GFR formed in 1969 they named the group after the Grand Trunk & Western Railroad that runs through Flint. Like a Spartan, Farner was intent on bringing rock destined for arenas. What began as rehearsals at Flint’s Federation of Musicians Union Hall led to some of rock music’s watershed moments. At the 1969 Atlanta International Pop Festival, they shared the stage with rock luminaries such as Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. GFR thrilled the audience and further cemented its place as a live band full of loud, ferocious rock, soul, and funk!

The same year they formed – 1969 – the band further defied expectations by releasing two albums (via Capitol Records) in a four-month period. Farner wrote all but two songs from  On Time  and the platinum-selling  Grand Funk . He said they wanted to take advantage of the meteoric rise that was building in terms of the band’s popularity.

“It wasn’t much pressure because the songs were coming fast,” Farner said. “I had nothing but time for songs.”

By 1970, Farner’s songs were pivotal to the band’s success. The epic composition, “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)” became an anthem for Vietnam War Veterans and audiences alike. Farner would later perform the iconic song at the Vietnam Memorial Wall, on the 25 th  Anniversary of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. Farner also received the Vietnam Veterans of American Presidents Award for Excellence in the Arts.

“That was a cold day temperature wise,” Farner said, of performing at the Vietnam War Memorial Wall. “But the warmth of the hearts of the people that actually showed up, not just the US GIs, we had Canadian Nam vets there, as well…I’m thinking…how am I gonna sing with a softball in my throat?’ I was so choked up because I’m watching, looking out in the audience and watching these guys that were standing there, crying.”

In July 1971, the trio sold out Shea Stadium in New York; 55,000 tickets were sold in a record 72 hours – besting The Beatles’ previous record.

Farner’s penned composition “Bad Time” was Grand Funk’s last Top 10 single reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, in June 1975. Although it never topped the charts, the song was the most played tune on radio that year due to demand.

Farner released his first solo record in 1977. He has also enjoyed success in Contemporary Christian music with the No. 2 and Dove-nominated “Isn’t It Amazing” in 1988.

Farner is a three-time Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame member – inducted as a solo member in 2015 and an inductee as part of Grand Funk Railroad and Terry Knight & The Pack.

On April 29th, it all comes full circle to the hardworking town of Flint, Mich. Mark Farner’s American Band will officially kick off his 50 th  Anniversary tour in his hometown, at the famous Capitol Theatre. Farner fondly remembers his hometown. Even though the auto factories have pulled out, the good families that were there are still around. He wants to always remember the “brick streets down on Saginaw Street” where he had fun times. The architecture in the Capitol Theatre is classy, he said, and has a feeling of being both big and a feeling of closeness, as well.

Flint is a town full of music, he said. He knows a lot of friends and fans will be in attendance. He looks forward to “Rockin’ full evening of Flint magic.”

“I remain devoted to family, friends, and fans,” Farner said.

Live reviews

I saw Mark Farner at the Cabot Theater (Beverly, MA) and the Blue Ocean (Salisbury, MA) front row both times. This man is the most amazing singer/songwriter. Not one song was tuned down and he hit every note. I was blown away!

Mark Farner has been such an influence on my life as a musician and I have waited over 40 years to meet him. Fortunately, after one of the shows, I finally met him and embarrassingly burst into tears. He was so caring and considerate he got up and hugged me and we laughed it off. I explained how he inspired me to become the singer that I am today.

We have a saying here "KNOW Mark Farner, KNOW Grand Funk Railroad! NO Mark Farner, NO Grand Funk Railroad!"

It was one of the best concerts I have ever seen (out of the 167 concerts that I've seen to date). Mark Farner ROCKS!

Fantastic show the guy rocked it the same as he did in the 70s. He is very nice to his fans and I appreciated him taking the time to sign autographs. He is the force behind Grand Funk Railroad and there is no doubt about this. I saw Grand Funk Railroad in concert at the same venue a few years back and they are nothing without him. He is a legendary rock patriot and he proved it at this show. Now this is what you call a true rock concert. So glad I saw this as I have liked his music since I was 10 years old. There are not many talented musicians like him around anymore that can touch your heart with their music. Thanks for coming to Milwaukee and come again. The only thing is he needs to add Gimme Shelter to his song list because his version puts the Stones to shame.

Well, when i was fourteen,i saw Grand Funk Railroad at the Boston Garden! This was the very frist concert. The backup band was the Wet Willy Band. This was probably the best show i've ever attended in my lifetime.Their show had it all. They had the blacklight clothes and lighting.Their was a huge screen in back of the band and when they played The Locomotive, they had a train come on screen. The Highlight of the show, was when they played We're An American Band, they had theses hangin electrodes in back of them flashing the Stars & Stripes of the American Flag.Since then i've seen Mark on his solo tour and even got to meet him on his tour bus.Man,is he short in statue.I highly suggest seeing him if he comes to your area.I only wish they would reunion again.

This my second time seeing Mark Farner in two years... Love the little stories and great stage presence Mark has and appreciates his band members.. At one point during a song Mark went over to the bass player and must have told her take a few steps up to the front of the stage .. I hope he comes back to this venue again.. ..Mark also signed autographs after the concert. Bring a record, old shirt, new shirt picture or whatever .. Hand shake too. .. I feel Closer to Home than ever ..

Seen Mark at The Cutting Room in NYC. Great all acoustic show in an intimate venue. At 70, still one of the best all-time frontmen in rock! Moreover, his voice and musical ability like a fine wine that continues to please. Overdue Rock & Roll Hall of Famer.

MARK FARNER On His Reunion With GRAND FUNK RAILROAD: 'Maybe If Enough People Prayed Sincerely, That Prayer Would Be Answered'

Mark Farner , a founding member of GRAND FUNK RAILROAD , has once again said that he is open to a reunion with his former band.

This past March, it was announced that GRAND FUNK RAILROAD would celebrate the 50th anniversary of its 1973 "We're An American Band" platinum single and album with 2023's "The American Band" tour.

Led by original members, drummer Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher , GRAND FUNK RAILROAD is slated to play several headlining shows this spring as well as serve as the "special guests" of Kid Rock for two hometown shows in Michigan at Little Caesars Arena on Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15. Joining Brewer and Schacher on tour are newer additions to the band, singer Max Carl , guitarist Bruce Kulick and keyboardist Tim Cashion .

Asked in a new interview with Artists On Record Starring ADIKA Live! if he has ever had the urge to call Don and tell him that they should mend their differences and go back on the road together, Mark said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "I have said it in person. I have said, 'Why can't we just bury the hatchet, go give the fans what neither one of us can separate from each other. There is three people — the ingredients are three specific people. No replacement of any one of those people can even come close. But I just met with a lot of resistance. There's stuff that's… And I'm not a psychiatrist; I don't know what's going on. I know it's not love. [ Laughs ] It ain't love. But I have done that. I've made the suggestion at least once a year for the past 24 years, and sometimes more than that, more than once a year. Because I remember when THE BEATLES were all still alive. And I'm thinking, 'You selfish pricks.' [ Laughs ] 'Why don't you just get back together so I can come and see you?' 'Cause I was a BEATLES fan. There was that anointing on them, like there was on Elvis [ Presley ]. But they took that and did something else with it. People do that; they'll just flop over and [go], 'Oh, yeah, man. All these people love me. Check me out.' God… Thank you, Lord, that where I'm at, I can see through the glass — even though it's a dark glass, I can see clearly through the other side. And I'm in touch with the love that could make millions happy again if the three of us got back on that stage.

"I don't wanna forecast any doom or gloom, but every time I've made the suggestion — and they know I've been open to it for all these years to go back out — we'd split it three ways like we did," he continued. "Just on the money aspect of it — just on the money aspect of it — Melvin could set his boy up for life. He's got a boy who has a child; I think one or two children by now. I don't know, 'cause I haven't kept that close a contact; it's not permissible. But I still love Melvin . He's a childhood friend of mine. We rode dirt bikes together. We jammed together. We smoked dope together. We did everything together.'

The legendary 74-year-old rocker, who turned to Jesus in the late 1980s and became a born-again Christian, added: "Maybe if enough people prayed sincerely, that prayer would be answered. I was praying for THE BEATLES to get back together, but there was something in there that just wouldn't allow that…

"I think if that could happen, there's only one person stopping that from happening. And Lord knows it's not Mel . [ Laughs ]"

Earlier this month, Farner told John Beaudin of RockHistoryMusic.com about GRAND FUNK RAILROAD celebrating the 50th anniversary of "We're An American Band" on tour this year: "You mean the GRAND FRAUD tour? [ Laughs ] Yeah, the GRAND F-A-U-X RAILROAD . It's too bad. 'Cause it's really dishonest. As legal as it may be, it is completely dishonest to the fans, and the fans are taking a slap in the face, just like they are with that fake FOREIGNER that's out there. There's not even an original member in that band, and they go out as FOREIGNER , without telling the prospective audience that there's no original members. But the audience, the fans don't get the truth. They get screwed again. And I think the fans have been screwed enough, man. Why not tell people the truth and go out with the chest held high instead of hiding behind your dark glasses and trying to present a fraud?"

Having reportedly written more than 90 percent of the GRAND FUNK music catalog, Farner has sold more than 30 million records worldwide and has earned 16 gold and platinum albums.

Farner 's first years in music were with the bands TERRY KNIGHT AND THE PACK and THE BOSSMEN . When GRAND FUNK RAILROAD formed in 1969, they named the group after the Grand Trunk & Western Railroad that runs through Flint. Like a Spartan, Farner was intent on bringing rock destined for arenas. What began as rehearsals at Flint's Federation of Musicians Union Hall led to some of rock music's watershed moments. At the 1969 Atlanta International Pop Festival , they shared the stage with rock luminaries such as LED ZEPPELIN , Janis Joplin and CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL . The same year they formed — 1969 — the band further defied expectations by releasing two albums (via Capitol Records ) in a four-month period. Farner wrote all but two songs from "On Time" and the platinum-selling "Grand Funk" . He said they wanted to take advantage of the meteoric rise that was building in terms of the band's popularity.

"It wasn't much pressure because the songs were coming fast," Farner said. "I had nothing but time for songs."

By 1970, Farner 's songs were pivotal to the band's success. The epic composition "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" became an anthem for Vietnam War veterans and audiences alike. Farner would later perform the iconic song at the Vietnam Memorial Wall, on the 25th Anniversary of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. Farner also received the Vietnam Veterans of American Presidents Award for Excellence in the Arts.

In July 1971, the trio sold out Shea Stadium in New York; 55,000 tickets were sold in a record 72 hours — besting THE BEATLES ' previous record.

The Farner -penned composition "Bad Time" was GRAND FUNK 's last Top 10 single, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 1975. Although it never topped the charts, the song was the most played tune on radio that year due to demand.

Farner is a three-time Michigan Rock And Roll Legends Hall Of Fame member — inducted as a solo member in 2015 and an inductee as part of GRAND FUNK RAILROAD and TERRY KNIGHT AND THE PACK .

Current GRAND FUNK RAILROAD singer Max Carl is a rock veteran from 38 SPECIAL . Max penned and sang 38 's biggest hit "Second Chance" and was co-founder of California's legendary JACK MACK AND THE HEART ATTACK . Don refers to Max as "the best blue-eyed soul singer on the planet. Kulick is best known for his 12 years with KISS and has credits with Michael Bolton , Meatloaf and Billy Squier . ( KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were influenced early on by GRAND FUNK .) Keyboardist Tim Cashion has a master's degree in music from the University of Miami. Affectionately called " Dr. Tim ," his credits include stints with Bob Seger and the SILVER BULLET BAND and English soul man Robert Palmer .

GRAND FUNK laid the groundwork for such bands as FOREIGNER , JOURNEY , VAN HALEN and BON JOVI with its signature hard driving sound, soulful vocals, muscular instrumentation and forceful pop melodies. The fact that GRAND FUNK 's legacy still reigns over the classic rock landscape fifty years after its 1969 birth in Flint, Michigan is a testament to the group's influence and staying power. Mega-hits "We're An American Band" , "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home" , "Locomotion" and "Some Kind Of Wonderful" still receive continuous airplay on classic rock radio. "We're An American Band" has received notoriety in recent years being used in movie soundtracks and in television/radio advertising. The huge hit was featured in a General Motors national TV ad campaign and in Disney 's animated feature film "The Country Bears" . "We're An American Band" was featured in the Cuba Gooding Jr. film "Radio" , and in the swash buckler "Sahara" starring Matthew McConaughey .

Internationally acclaimed GRAND FUNK has toured the world, selling out in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan and South America. The group's widespread appeal is also evident in its prestigious recording achievements. Over their career, GRAND FUNK has had 19 charted singles, 8 Top 40 hits and two Number One singles ( "We're An American Band" and "Locomotion" , both selling more than one million each). The group has now accumulated 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales exceeding 25 million copies sold worldwide. The most recent gold CD award was presented to the band for their greatest-hits package "Grand Funk Railroad The Collectors Series" .

Mark Taper Forum to reopen with ‘American Idiot,’ Larissa FastHorse’s ‘Fake It Until You Make It’

It’s official: Center Theatre Group is reopening the Mark Taper Forum in the fall.

The prominent Los Angeles theater organization announced Sunday night that the historic downtown L.A. venue, which abruptly paused its season last year because of a significant budget shortfall, will resume programming in October.

One of the first productions to play the Taper after its 16-month pause will be the world premiere of “Fake It Until You Make It” (Jan. 29-March 9, 2025), the commissioned play by Larissa FastHorse that was halted just weeks before opening last year . Directed by Michael John Garcés, the satirical comedy about shifting identities will debut after CTG’s two-week workshop last fall.

“Despite the disappointment of last summer,” FastHorse said, the workshop was a way for CTG Artistic Director Snehal Desai, Managing Director and Chief Executive Meghan Pressman and the rest of the group to say, “We’re still behind this piece.”

“It was a huge gift that basically saved us two weeks of rehearsal, as we worked out fight choreography, physical comedy timing and the nuts and bolts of farce,” FastHorse said.

“The Taper is my hometown theater, and it’s my favorite space in America for seeing a play,” continued FastHorse, who will be the first Native American writer to have a mainstage production at the Taper since it opened in 1967. “I’ve always wanted to have a play there, so it’s deeply meaningful that it will still be in that space.” After its L.A. run, the co-production will later play Washington, D.C.’s Arena Stage.

Commentary: What it feels like to have your history-making play canceled during the Taper’s closure

My new play, “Fake It Until You Make It,” commissioned by Center Theatre Group, was about to go into production at their Mark Taper Forum when the organization indefinitely “paused” Taper programming. Real damage has been done to L.A. communities.

June 21, 2023

Center Theatre Group artistic director Snehal Desai.

CTG’s 2024-25 season — Desai’s first as the nonprofit theater group’s artistic director — kicks off with Green Day’s “American Idiot” (Oct. 2-Nov. 10), the politically-charged musical based on the band’s hit album of the same title. The rock opera, which made its Broadway debut in 2010 , follows a trio of young Americans as they struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world.

The Taper staging will be produced with Deaf West Theatre and will feature an ensemble of deaf and hearing actors, performing simultaneously in American Sign Language and English. Desai approached Deaf West Artistic Director DJ Kurs about collaborating on “American Idiot,” a selection made strategically as a “cathartic” offering for this election year.

“These characters are screaming into a world that doesn’t hear them, so why not invert the metaphor with a trio of deaf friends who are trying to be heard in this world?” said Desai, who will make his CTG directorial debut with the production.

“DJ shared that, throughout the deaf community, there’s all these covers of punk rock, because you can feel the vibration of the music. We found a real organic synergy with the concept, and it felt like a way to reopen the Taper in a big way.”

Bernadette Peters, Lea Salonga and the company of "Old Friends."

Over at the Ahmanson Theatre, CTG’s largest house, Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga will lead the previously announced “Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends” (Feb. 8-March 9, 2025). Directed by Matthew Bourne, the tribute to the legendary composer heads directly to Broadway after its North American premiere in L.A.

The season continues with the Broadway tour of “Life of Pi” (May 7-June 1, 2025), based on the beloved novel by Yann Martel. The play, written by Lolita Chakrabarti and directed by Max Webster, will transform the Ahmanson into the vast Pacific Ocean, where a 16-year-old boy is stranded on a lifeboat with four other survivors: a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan and a 450-pound royal Bengal tiger — all of which come to life with an acclaimed combination of puppeteering and visual effects.

Meanwhile, the Taper will debut a new version of “Hamlet” (May 28-July 6, 2025), adapted and directed by Robert O’Hara with inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock and the film noir genre. Desai approached O’Hara, who helmed CTG’s production of “Slave Play” in 2022 , about presenting a fresh take on a classic.

“I hope to do a new reimagining every season at the Taper moving forward,” said Desai. “While the Taper is known as a playwrights’ theater, I also want it to be a home for adventurous directors.”

L.A.’s Mark Taper Forum will reopen, but does Center Theatre Group have a sustainable path forward?

CTG Artistic Director Snehal Desai and Managing Director Meghan Pressman lay out a tentative road map for recovery, including the reopening of one of the city’s most important stages.

A man and a tiger puppet

The Ahmanson will welcome “Parade” (June 17-July 12), the touring production of the Tony-winning Broadway revival. The musical — co-conceived by Harold Prince and featuring a book by Alfred Uhry and music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown — examines the true story of Leo and Lucille Frank, a newlywed Jewish couple whose lives in 1900s Georgia is upended when Leo is accused of an unspeakable crime.

A seventh show of the 2024-25 season will be a Broadway musical at the Ahmanson, to be announced in the coming weeks.

CTG’s season also includes a continuation and expansion of CTG:FWD programming, an initiative created last year to present special events and community gatherings during the Taper’s programming pause.

For the record:

8:16 a.m. April 29, 2024 An earlier version of this article said Center Theatre Group season subscription packages go on sale April 29. They go on sale May 8. Also, the article said Urban Bush Women’s “SCAT! ... The Complex Lives of Al & Dot, Dot & Al Zollar” would be part of CTG’s season. It is not.

These engagements include the 7 Fingers’ ”Duel Reality” (Sept. 11-22), an acrobatic spectacle inspired by “Romeo and Juliet” at the Ahmanson.

The company’s third stage, the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, will have its own lineup of CTG:FWD events including TheaterWorksUSA’s “Cat Kid Comic Club: The Musical” (Nov. 22-Jan. 5), adapted from Dav Pilkey’s “Dog Man” spinoff book series, and “El Otro Oz” (dates to be announced), a bilingual musical inspired by “The Wizard of Oz,” which had a limited run at the Douglas earlier this year.

CTG’s 2024-25 season subscription package, which goes on sale May 8 online, includes “American Idiot,” “Fake It Until You Make It” and “Hamlet” at the Taper; as well as “Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends,” “Parade,” “Life of Pi” and the yet-to-be-announced musical at the Ahmanson. Fall 2024 CTG:FWD programming will be available to purchase as add-on performances to the subscription package, and spring 2025 CTG:FWD programming will go on sale at a later date.

Conciertos que hicieron historia: Pantera – Monsters of Rock Moscow (1991)

¿ El show?
