23 Fantastic Things to do in Puerto Penasco, Mexico (Rocky Point)

Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, is a beautiful beach resort destination in northwestern Mexico. I recently discovered this hidden gem and found a surprisingly large list of fun things to do in Puerto Penasco.

Tucked away in the north of Sonora, Puerto Peñasco is a largely undiscovered destination located on the tranquil Sea of Cortez. Rocky Point is just four hours south of Tucson and about three and a half hours from Phoenix. That makes it an especially popular beach vacation destination for Arizona folks, but off the radar for almost everyone else.

Things to Do in Puerto Peñasco

The beach town of Puerto Penasco is just 3.5 hours from Phoenix, 4 hours from Tucson, and a 5.5-hour drive from San Diego. I’ve visited Rocky Point for two vacations and can’t wait to head back again. If you are looking for maps or directions to Puerto Penasco we have you covered as well!

Top Things to do in Puerto Penasco, Mexico: Where to Eat, Play and Stay

If you want to vacation in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico I’ve got recommendations for where to stay, where to eat, and things to do! Here are my absolute favorite things to do in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico.

Where to stay in Puerto Peñasco in 2023

There are 12 resorts and hotels in Puerto Peñasco, along with a countless number of apartment rentals and small bed and breakfasts. I can share my top four favorite Puerto Penasco hotels. One hotel is my overall favorite, one is a value pick, another is a family choice, and there is also a budget pick in there too.

Luxury – Las Palomas Beach And Golf Resort.   Built in the Sandy Beach district ( Playa Arenosa) of Puerto Peñasco, this resort is very popular and has everything from swim-up bars and infinity pools to a golf course and luxury condos.

Las Palomas Resort works with many local businesses helping to arrange tickets for multiple excursions such as deep-sea fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, scuba diving, horseback riding, hiking, whale watching, and much more.

The complex hosts a full gym and luxury spa facility with the option of participating in Zumba, beach volleyball, aqua aerobics, Mexican bingo, and many more activities.

Featuring two restaurants and two snack bars on site, Las Palomas Resort offers everything you could possibly need. Las Palomas Resort is the only Puerto Peñasco resort to have been awarded a 4-diamond rating from AAA. After stepping inside this palatial haven you will see why.

Family Choice – Penasco Del Sol Hotel. A slightly less expensive, but beautiful option is situated just minutes from Puerto Peñasco’s nightlife and main tourist hot spots. Each fresh, modern room boasts ravishing views of the Sea Of Cortez and is a great place for families with younger children.

The hotel offers several booking packages to suit every need and also has car rental services on site. Peñasco Del Sol Hotel holds a three-diamond rating and is very popular among families.

A daily kids club offers arts and crafts, games, and other fun activities. There is a large swimming pool and of course easy access to the beach. Peñasco Del Sol is among the very few hotels that allow pets for an additional charge.

Peñasco Del Sol Hotel

Boutique Hotel – The Dream Weaver Inn   –  This is the perfect hotel if you want a quieter escape and are willing to sacrifice direct access to the beach. Although not every room has sea views, there is a communal patio that provides sensational views of the beach and the Sea Of Cortez. The Rocky Point hotel offers a shuttle to the beach trail and also offers spacious rooms.

Budget Choice – Hotel Senorial –  A budget alternative, and still in an amazing location. Walking distance to the beach and a central location to base yourself for a Puerto Penasco adventure.

Compare Puerto Peñasco Hotels and VRBO

The best areas to rent a VRBO is the Las Conchas neighborhood or Cholla Bay. Homes are located on the beach or within walking distance.

My favorite travel insurance for Mexico: One last thing before you get started planning your vacation to Rocky Point! Have you looked into travel insurance for Mexico yet? You can find the best deal on travel insurance here and learn why you should not travel without it.

23 Best Things To Do In Puerto Peñasco in 2023

With its captivating scenery and wide range of activities, you won’t have a hard time finding things to do in Puerto Peñasco. When visiting Puerto Peñasco you get to experience the best of both worlds: Rocky Point is a small town with traditional Mexican charm and also offers modern, luxurious resorts.

When visiting a new place it can be a struggle to decide what to schedule into your itinerary. Here are my top recommendations for things to do in Puerto Peñasco.

1. Head to the Beach

sandy beach in Puerto Penasco

It’s all about the beach and the Sea of Cortez in Puerto Peñasco. The beaches are wide and offer plenty of opportunities for swimming, kayaking, fishing, snorkeling, and collecting shells.

The closest Rocky Point beach to the center of town is Playa Bonita (Pretty Beach) which stretches to the west until it turns into Playa Arenosa (Sandy Beach). These are the two beaches where you will find most of the Rocky Point resorts.

Make sure to head to the beach during low tide, as it can retreat up to a mile or more depending on the time of year. It’s a beautiful time to walk the wide stretch of sand and collect seashells.

2. Snorkel in the Sea of Cortez

snorkeling

Puerto Penasco is located on the Sea of Cortez (aka the Gulf of California.) The clear blue water is great for both snorkeling and scuba diving.

Some of the top scuba and snorkeling spots in the area are located in Cholla Bay and Bird Island. You can charter a boat from Cholla Bay for a great snorkeling excursion that will have more marine because the bay is deeper.

If you want to snorkel from the beach the best options are Tucson Beach and Playa Mirador (near Manny’s Beach Club).

Tucson Beach is calm and doesn’t get much wind. It’s located near Cholla Bay and Playa Mirador.

Playa Mirador has a lot of rocks, which makes for good snorkeling. Bird Island offers the overall best experience. These spots generally have clear and warm waters that are more ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling.

One thing to know: the tide in Puerto Peñasco rises and falls every 6 hours so you should plan to be in the water at incoming tide, high tide, or one hour before the outgoing tide. These times will have the best visibility.

3. Explore Tide Pools

tide pool with sea urchin

Puerto Penasco’s waters have some of the best tide pooling in the world because of its dramatic tidal fluctuation. Tidepools are visible at low tide. This is when the water recedes to reveal pools of ocean water trapped along the shoreline.

4. Collect Seashells along the Seashore

shells

Collecting shells on the beach in Rocky Point is wonderful, especially at low tide. You’ll find shells on all the beaches, but the locals know that “Shell beach”; a remote beach north of Cholla bay, is the best beach for shells.

Lobos is the best place to find Conch and Murex shells. Also, from Playa Encanto there are a lot of roads that will take you down to the Playas east of town with loads of shells.

Lastly, Las Conchas is a 6-mile-long stretch of beach that is mostly sandy where you can walk way out in many places even when the tide is not out. Lots of shells here

5. Señorita Rita Sunset Cruise

Senorita Rita Boat Ride Puerto Penasco

To fully experience the phenomenal Rocky Point sunset, jump aboard the Señorita Rita Cruise. This two-hour cruise offers an open bar serving a selection of cocktails and draft beer with the option of sandwiches, chips, and other snacks.

Prices are $25 for adults and $10 for children. Señorita Rita can also be hired privately subject to availability.

6. Explore The Puerto Peñasco Malecon

Malecon in Puerto Penasco

The boardwalk alongside the Sea Of Cortez is the main street known as the Malecon. Here you will discover traditional restaurants, an all-around shopping experience, and street food with amazing flavor.

The Malecon in Puerto Peñasco is also where you can find most of the bars and nightclubs in town. If you want to party when you are in Rocky Point, this is the place. You’ll also find the iconic “Puerto Peñasco” sign here, a definite photo opp!

7. Take a Day Trip to El Pinacate UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

El Pinacate UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Mexico has 34 UNESCO sites to explore and one happens to be located just 40 minutes from Puerto Peñasco. El Pinacate Unesco World Heritage site is locateded in the barren land of the Sonoran Desert lays a cluster of volcanic peaks and cinder cones.

Ten huge craters can be found at the site which are believed to have been formed by volcanic eruptions. During the 1960s astronauts were sent to the Gran Desierto De Altar for training as NASA believes that the terrain shares many similarities to that of the moon.

During your stay in Puerto Peñasco why not go and Visit The Moon In Mexico ?

How to get El Pinacate:  If you are traveling from the United States, El Pinacate is most easily accessed from Arizona,  The Pinacate Reserve Information Center is located just off Highway 8, at milepost Km 52, just 32 miles south of Lukeville, Arizona.

8. Tequila Tasting At Manny’s Tequila Factory

Manny’s Tequila Factory in Puerto Penasco

The Tequila Factory is a family-owned business that has been owned and expanded through the last three generations. Manny is a true character and has some great stories to share if you visit the Tequila shop.

A Tequila tasting includes a talk about the history of Tequila, and the process to make tequila, as well as a tasting of 6 types of tequila (blanco, reposado, anejo, triple distilled, antiguo, and gold) plus a tasting of a selection of flavored tequilas.

Since Tequila is Mexico’s trademark alcoholic beverage, you have to sip at least one. Heading over for a tequila-tasting session at Manny’s Tequila Factory allows for a true taste of Mexico.

Tequila Factory Location: Blvd. Benito Juarez Entre calle 12 y 13, Centro, 83550 Puerto Peñasco, Son., Mexico

9. Visit Laguna Del Mar to Kayak and Paddleboard

You’ll find a lot of things to do at Laguna Del Mar ; everything from snorkeling to golfing for a fun afternoon. There’s a paddleboard rental on site as well as kayaks, paddle boats, and golf.

Surrounded by wildlife, the translucent blue waters of the lagoon span roughly 40 acres and weaves between land, golf course, and water. It’s the perfect spot for water sports on those slightly more windy days.

12. Visit The Seashell Museum

seashell museum in Puerto Penasco

The small museum is located on C. Ramón Figueroa off Av. Constitucion. The owner, Naomi is extremely knowledgeable and informative about all the different kinds of seashells in the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez. The museum is great for both kids and adults and also has a cute boutique with some unique pieces for sale. It will be hard to look at seashells the same way after visiting the museum and chatting with Naomi.

13. Explore the Street Art

There is a thriving art community in Rocky Point that includes fine artists as well as street artists. When you visit the Puerto Peñasco Malecon area, venture off the main shopping street and you’ll find a variety of street art and artist-focused graffiti.

Most of these murals have been created by a group of 12 local street artists. One of the best things to do in Rocky Point for art lovers.

15. Visit Isla San Jorge aka Bird Island

This is a boat tour from Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) to swim with the sea lions that breed on Isla San Jorge. If you are lucky you’ll see sea lion pups playing in the water.

16. Visit the Rocky Point Oyster Farm

La Ostionera, also known as The Rocky Point Oyster farm is just a few miles from downtown Puerto Penasco. Simply take the road to Caborca by Las Conchas to the Oyster Farms. Here you’ll be able to learn about oysters and sample some of the best oysters in North America.

Rocky Point Oyster Farm Address:  Estero Morua, 83553 Puerto Peñasco, Son., Mexico

17. Play Golf on a Jack Nicklaus Course

The Nicklaus Design Course at Vidanta Puerto Peñasco is a challenging 18-hole, 7,200-yard course, par 72 with spectacular panoramic views of the sea. Golfweek Magazine named the course one of the best in Mexico.

18. Take a Banana Boat Ride

Banana boat rides puerto penasco

Banana boats are inflatable boats shaped just like a banana. They are connected to a speedboat that pulls them in the sea. It’s a bit of a thrill ride as most boats go quite fast and some take turns to up the thrill!

Rocky Point is a perfect place for a banana boat ride when the sea is calm and glassy. Rides in Puerto Penasco cost between $10 and $20. Vendors can be found at most public beaches.

19. Ride a Jet Ski

You can rent jet skis in Puerto Penasco for one or two people. The best time to ride is early morning, or when the sea is calm.

Rentals are priced starting at a half hour and run about $60-$80 per hour.  Remember it’s okay to negotiate prices in Mexico! Jet Ski vendors are found on the beach as well on the main roads near downtown.

20. Book a Massage

On my second visit to Puerto Penasco, we rented a house. Shortly after we arrived, a tamale vendor, a jewelry vendor, and a masseuse stopped by on their daily rounds of the rental homes. We all booked a massage and had her return the next day for several of us to have a 2nd massage.

If you aren’t lucky enough to have a masseuse show up at your doorstep, I recommend La Bella Spa which is located on C. Manuel Arista.

21. Street Vendors on the Malecon

Make sure to try a few of the street vendors selling food and delicious drinks. You’ll find everything from Sonoran-style hot dogs, seafood cocktails, fruit, and of course cocktails from various vendors in the downtown area.

22. Savor a Michelada or Pina Colada

Try a michelada (a Mexican Cerveza prepared with beer, lime juice, assorted sauces, spices, and peppers) or my favorite — a Pina Colada in a pineapple. Delicioso!

23. Enjoy a Margarita

Margarita cocktail

Can you visit Mexico without a Margarita? Well, I can’t! Every restaurant in town will offer this delicious tequila-based cocktail, but my favorite place to enjoy it is at La Casa Del Capitan. Not only is the Margarita authentic, but the views are spectacular!

Eat: Best Puerto Penasco Restaurants

There is a wide range of restaurants serving local delicacies and traditional Mexican dishes. Here are five of Puerto Peñasco’s top-rated restaurants.

La Casa Del Capitan

Holding the reputation of having the best margaritas in Puerto Peñasco, this beach-facing restaurant offers a view like no other. Located on the hill overlooking the town, good timing and a pre-booked table will enable you to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets in Rocky Point.

La Case Del Capital is located at: Av Camino del Agua s/n, El Puerto, 83554 Puerto Peñasco, Son., Mexico

El Tapeo Wine Bar

If it’s great wine you’re after, El Tapeo offers the largest selection in Puerto Peñasco. It is also one of the best places for live music in town.

With traditional décor and enough tapas to feed you for a week, El Tapeo is definitely a Rocky Point restaurant to seek out during your stay. If you go, I highly recommend the paella and reserving a table on the outside patio.

El Tapeo is located at: Bella Vista, 83553 Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico

Citron Restaurant

Located onsite at the Las Palomas Beach And Golf Resort, the Citron Restaurant serves both traditional Mexican and specialty dishes including vegetarian pasta, fish and juicy steaks.

This is a great spot if you want to ease away from the spice and instead enjoy a juicy steak. The Citron Restaurant also offers a wonderful 2 for 1 happy hour at the bar.

The restaurant has live entertainment many nights each week. During my visit, the Agua De Coco jazz band played.

Mayan Palace

The Mayan Palace in Vidanta, Puerto Peñasco is the most private resort in Rocky Point. Home to the largest lazy river in Latin America, this resort has a lot to offer.

As the resort is private you generally have to be a member to use the facilities, however, you can still enjoy a stroll through the luscious gardens and dine at the restaurants.

Puerto Penasco Travel Tips

  • U.S. dollars and credit/debit cards are widely accepted.
  • Some restaurants, vendors, and taxis only accept cash, so bring some.
  • Try to avoid ATMs in resort lobbies because the fees can be hefty.
  • Drink bottled water (not the tap water).
  • Brush your teeth with bottled water.
  • All hotels and restaurants use bottled water for their ice and drinks. Always ask to double-check, but you can rest assured the water will be filtered.
  • There is a wide range of hotels, from budget to luxury. I recommend Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort  which is currently the  #1 hotel on Tripadvisor .
  • For a mid-level hotel, I recommend Penasco Del Sol ,  It’s a great location in the city center, but located on a very quiet street. The hotel rate includes a wonderful breakfast as well.
  • For a budget hotel, try the Hospedaje Mulege.
  • You can also check  Hotels.com for the best Puerto Penasco hotel rates .
  • I’m a fan of World Nomads travel insurance for short-term trips. Protect yourself from possible injury and theft abroad. Read more about why you should always carry travel insurance here.
  • Don’t forget your passport as you will need it when you return to the United States.

Glad I found this post! I moved to Tucson last year and this has been on my list to visit!

Hi Leigh, if you live in Tucson you must visit. It’s a great beach town. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Penasco looks lovely! I really like that you could totally drive there from the US! I live on the opposite side of the US, so that concept just blows my mind. All your food pics made me SO HUNGRY!!

Hi Brianna, Living in San Diego has a few perks and visiting Mexico is one of them! And the food was delicious in Puerto Penasco!

The tequila tasting is tempting, but the volcanoes in the reserve would be my first stop here. Very cool.

Hi Sol — El Pinacate is really interesting. Fascinating to think that the astronauts trained there!

I would definitely do the tequila tasting, sunset rita cruise and check out the UNESCO site!

Really informative and detailed post. It looks like a wonderful place to visit and your photographs are excellent too 🙂

We absolutely LOVED El Buzo in Puerto Penasco! The Ahi Tuna was insane 🙂 Highly recommend!

Hi Kirsten, Thanks for the El Buzo recommendation! I’m hoping to visit Puerto Penasco again and hopefully soon!

My husband’s family lives in Phoenix. So I guess this summer we could combine a family visit with a weekend on the Mexican beach. Thanks for writing this post.

Hi Pamela, it does get hot in Puerto Penasco. Early summer would be your best bet, unless you enjoy high temps!

There are plenty of fishing charters to choose from, whether you’re interested in offshore pursuits or prefer to cast a line in the shallower estuaries. Make those tall tales a reality, or just enjoy the experience of being out on the open water. You’ll be in good hands with veteran captains who know all of the fishing hotspots in and around Rocky Point.

Blaze a trail on horseback

Release your inner cowboy or cowgirl on a horseback excursion in Rocky Point. There are several stables along Sandy Beach that offer horseback riding tours along the beaches and dunes of Puerto Peñasco. Never ridden before? There are bomb-proof mounts suitable for riders of all skill levels, but just remember to wear closed-toe shoes and long pants!

Legendary parties: Rocky Point Spring Break

Situated just a few hours from Arizona’s biggest universities, it’s no wonder that Rocky Point has become the hottest spot for a Spring Break in Mexico. Party like there’s no tomorrow with your closest friends in Puerto Peñasco, where beautiful beaches, swim-up bars and amazing nightlife set the stage for this monumental rite of passage.

Pinacate Volcano Tours

Contact the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans (CEDO) office in Rocky Point and arrange a tour of the El Pinacate Volcano and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve. Three different tours are offered depending on your physical abilities. Located in Puerto Peñasco, CEDO works closely with visitors, local communities, and the government to understand and minimize human impact on local environments and species through research, education, and conservation.

Boat excursion to Bird Island

Located 27 miles south east of Puerto Peñasco, Isla San Jorge (better known as Bird Island) provides a very important biological sanctuary for a wide variety of creatures including birds, sea lions and other marine life. Decreed a “Reserved Area of Shelter” for migratory birds and wild fauna in 1978, this group of several rocky islands is worth the one-hour boat ride, as you encounter dolphins along the way. If you visit Bird Island between October and April, you may spot grey, killer and pilot whales as well. Most tours incorporate snorkeling opportunities and even include an open bar!

Day trip to La Ostioneria (Oyster Farm)

La Ostionera de Puerto Peñasco is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates the delicate flavors of fresh oysters. Watch as the oysters are pulled from the sand, shucked before your eyes, and served with hot sauce on the side. By car, you’ll see signs to the oyster farms on the road to Caborca, about 7 miles outside of Rocky Point.

12 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Puerto Peñasco

Written by Meagan Drillinger Updated Dec 22, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Author Meagan Drillinger has spent more than a decade exploring Mexico and visits several times per year.

Have you ever been to Arizona's best beach town? Yes, you read that correctly. Arizona has a beach town — it just happens to be right over the border in the state of Sonora in Mexico. Packed with things to do, it's a part of Mexico you never knew you needed to visit.

Beachfront hotels in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico

Puerto Peñasco is home to a bustling Old Port, historic malecon (sea wall), uninterrupted stretches of sandy beach, holiday resorts, restaurants, golf courses, and explosive sunsets. Picture the landscape of Los Cabos, with a rugged, wild interior and panoramic views of the sea, all at a fraction of the cost.

Getting to Puerto Peñasco is easy if you live in the Southwest — all you need to do is drive across the border. It's easiest to reach from Phoenix, but you can also drive from Tucson or even San Diego. The closest airports are in Tijuana or Hermosillo.

If you live in the American Southwest, this is a perfect beach getaway on the Baja Peninsula for even just a weekend. Whether you're a sun worshipper, an adrenaline junkie, or a nature lover, plan your sightseeing with our list of the top places to visit and things to do in Puerto Peñasco.

1. Relax on the Beaches of Puerto Peñasco

2. enjoy water sports, 3. explore el pinacate y gran desierto de altar biosphere reserve, 4. visit isla san jorge, 5. go on a whale watching tour, 6. stroll along the malecon, 8. rent an atv, 9. see the street art, 10. enjoy the sounds of agua de coco, 11. browse old port, 12. fly with rocky point ziplines, where to stay in puerto peñasco for sightseeing.

Aerial view of Sandy Beach in Puerto Penasco

If there's one thing to be said about Puerto Peñasco's beaches, it's that you won't want for space. The beaches here are massive. Picture golden sand, cobalt-colored water, open swaths of sand for sunbathing, and plenty of waves for jet skiing.

Playa Arenosa , or Sandy Beach, is the most sweeping stretch of powder, which sits directly in front of the majority of hotels and resorts. Popular things to do at this family-friendly beach are snorkeling and scuba diving.

Closer to the center of town is Playa Bonita , which is the most convenient beach in Puerto Peñasco. Also family-friendly, but big enough to keep crowds spread apart, this is a great beach for renting an umbrella, ordering a snack from one of the many restaurants, and relaxing.

Las Conchas offers six uninterrupted miles of sandy dunes and gentle waves, and is a favorite for fishing, running, and gently wading into the water.

Cholla Bay is a few miles north of Puerto Peñasco and has spectacular views of the sunset. A string of restaurants lines the shore, and on a clear day, the 360-degree views are simply stunning.

Kite flying in Puerto Peñasco

The water in the Sea of Cortez is quite calm, without any big waves, so people of all experience levels are welcome to test their sea legs in whatever form they like.

If you love getting out on the water, Puerto Peñasco is one of the best spots in Mexico to kitesurf the waves . The wind level is just right for zipping kitesurfers across the warm Sea of Cortez waves at amazing speeds. All skill levels are welcome, and many kitesurfing schools are available and ensure that even beginners are safe and having fun.

Looking for something to do that's a little less high-adrenaline? Consider exploring the coastline by Jet Ski. Many outfitters in town offer the opportunity to rent a Jet Ski or WaveRunner for the day.

Not totally into motorized sports? You can also kayak, snorkel, and paddleboard. For all these, you can easily rent your own equipment near the beach. For something like paddleboarding, there are even classes available.

Tip: Plan to be out around sunset. Catching the smoldering sky from the water is a memorable end to any day.

View towards the Pinacate Reserve

An enigmatic and hypnotizing lunar-like landscape awaits visitors just outside Puerto Peñasco. The Pinacate Reserve and the neighboring Gran Desierto de Altar Reserve are known for the surreal, stark, and alienesque natural beauty.

The biosphere is made up of shifting dune fields, which, you may be surprised to learn, are the largest in North America, as well as volcanic craters. This is by far one of the most rewarding (and hard-to-believe) sites in Puerto Peñasco.

The 30-mile-wide volcanic field is known for its sandy coastline and raw, rugged volcanic cones. Teeming with wildlife like puma, deer, sheep, and even Gila monsters, this part of Mexico is truly other worldly. In fact, some of the lava fields were used by U.S. astronauts as part of their training during the Apollo space program.

Today, the area is a Biosphere Reserve and one of the 34 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Mexico . The highest peak is the Cerro del Pinacate, which reaches an elevation of 3,904 feet.

Be sure to request the guidance of one of the rangers, who are experts in the region and can give you the best information, while keeping you safe. A driving tour will take you to the most dramatic spots in the biosphere.

Address: Carretera Sonoyta-Puerto Peñasco Km 51 Ejido Los Norteños.

Blue-footed booby, Mexico

Wildlife lovers will absolutely love Isla San Jorge, also known as Bird Island. If you stand on the shores of Las Conchas, it may be possible, on a clear day, to make out the rising, white mounds along the horizon.

One of the top boat excursions in northern Mexico, Isla San Jorge is a virtual paradise for bird-watchers , about 25 miles south of Puerto Peñasco. What exactly will you be spotting through your binoculars? Seabirds (like herons and boobies), sea lions, dolphins, and possibly even whales.

Today, the island is a federal reserve area, and has been since the late 1970s. For a full-day cruise, consider Del Mar Charters. In fact, in the warmer months, travelers are invited to snorkel or swim with the sea lions. Their charters include lunch for $90 per adult and $60 per child. They also offer fishing and scuba diving charters, and even a sunset cruise, which is highly recommended.

Address: Del Mar Charters, Recinto Portuario, 83554 Puerto Peñasco, Sonora

Gray whale in the Sea of Cortez

Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez the world's aquarium, and for good reason. Animal lovers must put a whale watching tour on their to-do list, especially from February to May, when grey whales are frolicking through the Sea of Cortez.

CEDO, the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans, is another must for getting close to the ecology of Puerto Peñasco. The center runs summer camps and educational programs, and also offers ecotours that center around the landscape that makes Puerto Peñasco so unique.

Address: Edif. Agustín Cortés S/N Fracc, Las Conchas, 83550 Puerto Peñasco, Son.

Puerto Penasco Malecon

Like any good Mexican beach town worth its sal , Puerto Peñasco has a magnificent Malecon, or beach path. Hugging the coastline, this quarter-mile walking path is a communal gathering place. A typical day on the Malecon can include shopping for handicrafts, eating at one of the many different restaurants along it, or simply perching on a bench and enjoying an explosive Pacific Coast sunset.

Do you feel like dancing? Be sure to catch the live music performances that can pop up any night of the week. A few years ago, the malecon underwent a renovation to make the entire experience seamless by leveling the streets and sidewalks.

The malecon is a vital part of Puerto Peñasco's history, and today visitors can pay homage to the city's first inhabitants at the Monument to the Fishermen , which is part of a set of sculptures that are in ports across Mexico.

View of Nicklaus-designed Islas Del Mar Golf Course in Cholla Bay, Puerto Penasco

Puerto Peñasco is a prime spot to perfect your golf swing. Quite a few world-class golf courses can be found in and around the city, and it's easy to secure a day pass for a leisurely day of golf, no matter where you're staying.

One of the best golf courses is at Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort , which features gorgeous views of the Sea of Cortez. The course was designed by Forrest Richards and Arthur Jack Snyder and is a 72-par 18-hole championship course .

If that's not enough, be sure to check out the Jack Nicklaus course at Vidanta Mayan Palace . This 18-hole, 7,200-yard course has been ranked as one of the best in Mexico. End the game with a spectacular view from The Tides Social House.

ATV on a Sea of Cortez beach

If you go to Puerto Peñasco and don't rent an ATV, did you even visit at all? One of the most popular modes of transportation in this coastal city is an ATV - and not just on the paved roads. Off-roading on the dunes is a visitor's favorite pastime, as well.

It's a desert environment, which means there is a lot of sand, and dune crashing is an epic way to enjoy the day. Quad riding is allowed behind the beaches at Las Conchas, Sandy Beach, Cholla Bay, and more. Most resorts even allow you to park the ATV on property, so you can have it readily at your disposal in case you rent it for more than a day.

The best place to visit to ride your ATV? Competition Hill, located next to Cholla Bay. This 30-degree, 300-foot sandy hill was designed with off-roading in mind, and vehicles can be seen cruising up and down all day long. Rental shacks are set up all over town, and all you will need is a driver's license, a deposit, and to sign a rental agreement.

Those in the know are aware of Puerto Peñasco's budding artistic community. But this isn't surprising, given the Southwest landscape in general has attracted artists for centuries.

What isn't visually inspiring about stark desert meets rolling mountains meets azure sea? And don't even get started on the sunsets. It may not be the number one art destination in Mexico, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a lot to show for itself.

The art here is all about street art, getting back to the gritty core of public art. But you can also find international art, from jewelry and pottery to other handicrafts, many from around the world.

The Galeria Del Mar Bermejo , for example, just a few blocks off the Malecon, is a treasure trove for art from around the world. In fact, the network of streets downtown is a veritable outdoor museum of street murals. You can even find several galleries that pepper downtown, as well.

The art scene has even trickled down to the beaches, where you can find that the beach stairs are splashed with beautiful murals.

Address: Galería Del Mar Bermejo, Calle Ignacio Zaragoza 11, El Puerto, 83554 Puerto Peñasco, Son.

It's impossible to avoid the vibrant music scene when visiting Mexico, and Puerto Peñasco is no exception. Repeat visitors to Puerto Peñasco are already familiar, and first timers are always delighted, with Agua de Coco. This local jazz and salsa band has been around since 2011, and they are certainly Sonoran native sons who make their city and state proud.

They burst on the scene at the Festival International Cervantino, when it was held in Rocky Point, and have since exploded to become one of the best tourist attractions when you're visiting the area. If you love to dance, be sure to find out where they are playing. And even if you don't love to dance, they still put on a fantastic performance.

Old Port, Puerto Penasco

In the heart of Puerto Penasco, Old Port represents the historic section of the city. Today it is known for its markets, where the local fisherman come to sell their morning catch. It's a great spot where residents and visitors mingle together, selecting what they'll be bringing home to cook that afternoon.

Don't feel like cooking? Old Port is packed with many restaurants where you'll be able to try regional cuisine . Old Port also has fantastic shopping and art galleries that flank the wide, palm-fringed street that heads directly to the beach.

One of the best outdoor activities in Puerto Penasco is its adrenaline-pumping biplane course . In fact, it's one of the longest in Sonora and has some of the most beautiful views.

Strap in and get ready to soar above the rolling sand dunes with direct views out to the Sea of Cortez. The course has five lines that are connected by standing platforms. At 2,000 feet of track, this is the second longest zipline in Mexico .

You can find Rocky Point Ziplines on the road to Cholla Bay.

Address: Paseo de la Duna S/N, La Choya, 83550 Son.

BY JARED DILLINGHAM

TRAVEL GUIDE: THINGS TO DO IN ROCKY POINT / PUERTO PENASCO

My list of great things to do in Puerto Peñasco (or Rocky Point, Mexico) continues to grow.

While some activities and businesses haven’t made a post-pandemic comeback, most are going strong and back to normal.

While Puerto Peñasco has a spring break/party reputation (for good reason) visitors looking for outdoor adventures, good food, culture, and beach relaxation will all have plenty to do!

Key Takeaways

Rocky Point has long been a favorite vacation destination for Arizonans looking to spend some time on the beach.

Most of the best things to do in Puerto Peñasco revolve around the sandy beaches and the Sea of Cortez (or Gulf of California), but there are plenty of options inland, too!

For organizational purposes, I’m going to divide my list of things to do in Rocky Point into a few different categories, listed in the table of contents below ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Where to Stay in Puerto Peñasco

There are now more than a dozen highrise hotel resorts on the beaches of Rocky Point. Many are a combination of hotel-type rentals and privately-owned condos.

Select dates to see prices for rentals in Rocky Point.

Keep in mind: Many condos in the resorts on the beach rent as VRBOs:

You can check out our rundown of most of the big resorts, plus photos in the post below ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Las Palomas, Puerto Peñasco

Las Palomas is, perhaps, the most well-known resort property in Rocky Point. It first opened to visitors in 2005, and really hasn’t stopped growing since.

It’s a cluster of highrise towers along the sandy beach west of Puerto Peñasco. You’ll find large suites here, with as many as five bedrooms. Plus, they have kitchens, living rooms, and dining rooms. It’s ideal for a couple, a group of friends, or a couple of families to all stay in the same suite.

las palomas resort sunset

The living space is even more expansive because each has a large balcony (or balconies), overlooking the Sea of Cortez.

Las Palomas has several large pools, swim-up bars, and a lazy river … in addition to the beautiful beach.

The resort is a short drive from downtown Rocky Point, and also has an 18-hole golf course on site.

Keep in mind: Las Palomas may be a favorite, but far from the only place to stay in Rocky Point.

Vidanta, Puerto Peñasco: The Grand Mayan & Mayan Palace

On the other end of the spectrum, and about a 45-minute drive from Rocky Point, you’ll find Vidanta’s two properties in this part of Mexico.

The Grand Mayan and the Mayan Palace are on a secluded stretch of beach, and much quieter, if you’re seeking calm and relaxation.

The Vidanta resorts are home to beautiful pools, plus several restaurants. These are really ideal for travelers who want to stay in one spot and just relax (or play golf on-site).

Keep in mind: staying here will mean more of a drive to all the things to do in Puerto Peñasco we’re about to dive into!

Things to do Along Rocky Point’s Malecón

The Malecón in Puerto Peñasco refers to the downtown area, along the waterfront. It’s full of bars, restaurants, souvenir shops, and much more.

While it’s a bit rowdy at times, and some of the vendors can be aggressive trying to get you inside, it’s a must-see stop on a visit to Rocky Point.

Visit the Puerto Peñasco Sign

Yes, it’s touristy, but the Peñasco sign is colorful and fun. Plus, you can learn about the history in the area on the surrounding statues and plaques in the adjacent plaza.

puerto penasco sonora mexico sign

This was the site of a tense border governors conference in 2007, as the governors of border states in Mexico and the United States met to discuss border security and other issues.

The Mexican governors focused on stopping the illegal trafficking of weapons from the US into Mexico, and trying to convince the Americans not to expand the border fence.

It didn’t work. The US announced a 370-mile fence expansion the same week.

As a sidenote, California’s then-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger opposed the border wall expansion.

Grab a Drink at Boo Bar

The view of the Sea of Cortez from the multi-floor Boo Bar is great during the day. They’re open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and 11:00pm the rest of the week.

boo bar rocky point

Boo Bar has a food menu (with desserts, too) along with the beers and margaritas you’d expect. The view of the sea is beautiful from upstairs, and the swings at the bar are … unique!

boo bar puerto penasco malecon

Plus, as an Arizonan, I love the decor, which is largely a nod to those of us who live in Sonora’s neighboring state to the north.

Marco’s Fish Market

The Malecón has several fish markets lining the street. They’re a great spot to grab a fillet or bag of freshly-caught shrimp to bring back to the grill at your rental home or resort.

The guys at Marco’s are really friendly. They offer bags of shrimp in five, six, and nine-point increments. Plus, they’ll have oysters and different kinds of fish to choose from, based on what fishermen are catching at the time. It’s all fresh-caught, on ice, and they’ll clean it all for you on the spot.

Tortilleria Hernandez

The tiny tortilleria (tortilla shop) is in the running for my favorite spot on the Malecón, and one of my favorite things to do in Puerto Peñasco! It’s right off the main street, and just a few storefronts north of the big shops.

tortilleria hernandez puerto penasco

Depending on when you stop in, they’ll have corn and/or flour tortillas, chips, tostadas, and small tortillas to choose from. You can literally watch them being made in the one-room kitchen/shop!

We bought a pack of 10 flour tortillas for $3. You can’t beat it!

It doesn’t come up on the map-maker, but you can click here for the location of Tortilleria Hernandez 😀

Curios Sofia

This big Mexican pottery, craft and decor shop is also a couple blocks north of the Malecón.

It’s a maze inside the store, full of all kinds of things for your home. If you’d like, you can try to haggle with the owners to get the prices down. I paid $60 for this giant pot, which would could double that at home in Phoenix.

sofia's curiosities rocky point

You can click here for the location of Curios Sofia in Rocky Point .

Souvenir Shops

The expected hat, sunglasses, shirt, and nicknack shops line the Malecón.

These don’t rank high on my list of the best things to do in Rocky Point, but if you forgot something you’ll need for the beach, it’s a good place to pick them up.

Rocky Point Gallery

The Rocky Point Gallery is open 11-6 daily, and features a variety of local artwork.

It’s a block off the and you can click here for a map to the exact location .

Things to do in the Water Off Rocky Point

The Sea of Cortez has warm, clean water, without many waves. It creates ideal conditions for a number of activities and things to do in Puerto Peñasco.

rocky point sea of cortez drone aerial

deep sea fishing off Rocky Point

You’ll have a number of boat captains offering deep sea fishing trips off Puerto Peñasco.

We took a ride with Federico’s Charters for a few hours. The prices vary greatly. We paid $230 for three hours.

The deep sea fishing boats leave right from the main marina in Rocky Point, next to the Mexican Naval base.

rocky point deep sea fishing

You’ll go out with the captain and a crew of two, who will slice up calamari and other bait fish to hook to the line.

Pancho Villa has a number of fishing charter options from Puerto Peñasco, including an overnight fishing adventure.

Fish On Charters is another option for deep sea fishing off Rocky Point.

What Kind of Fish do you Catch in Rocky Point?

We didn’t have much luck, but in general the captain and crew will do everything in their power to make sure you go home with fish (or at least catch a bunch to throw back).

rocky point fishing puerto penasco

In Spring & Summer:

  • red snapper
  • gold spotted bass
  • black sea bass

June – October

  • (on boats that go farther out into the sea)

Here’s a tip: take the early morning (7:00am departure) because you’re likely to catch more fish! Whatever you catch, they’ll likely fillet for you to bring back to your rental.

Whale Watching in Puerto Peñasco

Whale watching is an option in Rocky Point, primarily during February, March, and into April.

Several companies offer whale watching tours from Puerto Peñasco, but keep in mind: there’s no guarantee that you’ll actually see whales. They enjoy the warm, protected waters, but they also swim all over the world in their migratory patterns, so you never know if they’ll swim up from Baja.

We pride ourselves in using all of our own photography, and I almost used a stock photo of a whale since we saw zero whales on our tour. Instead, I’m posting photos the giant pelicans which you’re guaranteed to see 😀

rocky point pelican

Back to the whales.

It’s really “luck of the draw.” Whales and dolphins have been seen close to shore (especially dolphins, close to the Malecon), but you’ll often have to take a whale watching tour from Rocky Point out 20 miles into the Sea of Cortez to find the pod.

We were disappointed to not find whales in late Feburary, but happy to have a group of sea lions playing around our boat for a while.

Whale Watching Tours in Rocky Point

As for the companies that offer whale watching tours from Rocky Point, you can check:

  • Rocky Point Adventures
  • Pancho Villa

What Kind of Whales do you see from Rocky Point?

It’s an interesting mix of whales you might see on a whale watching boat from Rocky Point.

The fin whale is probably the most-spotted whale off Puerto Peñasco.

The largest mammal on earth: the blue whale, has been known to swim in the Sea of Cortez. Plus, orcas, humpback whales, and fin whales have been seen on whale watching trip from Puerto Peñasco.

Rocky Point Sunset Cruise

There are a few sunset cruise options in Puerto Peñasco.

rocky point party boat

Several are boozy, including the Eco Fun Sunset Cruise . For $30, you’ll get a ticket onboard, *and access to an open bar.

You can also charter your own sunset cruise off Puerto Peñasco, for a larger fee.

Federico’s Charters offers options for booking sunset cruises for much smaller, private groups.

Plus Pancho Villa offers another two-hour sunset cruise with a group, and also allows people to book smaller, private boat trips.

Del Mar Charters offers a sunset cruise from Puerto Peñasco on their 42-foot catamaran. The $35 fee includes an open margarita bar.

Whether you watch the sunset in Rocky Point from a boat or the beach, it’s bound to be beautiful!

Snorkeling in Puerto Peñasco

You’ll find a difference of opinions when it comes to snorkeling in Rocky Point.

Personally, I don’t think it’s that great. Yes, the water is clean and clear, but along Puerto Peñasco’s coastline and reefs, the corals and fish aren’t overly pretty or interesting.

If you love to snorkel, you can try Cholla Bay (Tucson Beach/Pelican Beach) or Playa Mirador, which has more rocks to explore.

For the best snorkeling in Puerto Peñasco, head out to Bird Island, which is also known as Isla St. Jorge. It’s a 90 minute boat ride from Rocky Point to the small collection of rocks in the Sea of Cortez, which are said to offer the best sights underwater.

CEDO , the scientific research group, offers snorkeling excursions to Bird Island .

rocky point cedo visitor center

Pancho Villa offers a snorkeling tour off Rocky Point, which will bring you out into the Sea of Cortez for three hours.

Eco Fun offers another tour of Bird Island.

Del Mar Charters is another option, offering a six-hour trip to Bird Island from Rocky Point for $100.

Rocky Point Kayaking

People love to kayak off Rocky Point because there are no waves and the water is beautiful. A warning: kayaking here can be dangerous. Toward the end of 2022, an Arizona husband and wife died after they were swept out to sea by high winds.

You can take a kayak out anywhere along the coast into the sea or into the estuaries.

Kayaks in Rocky Point usually run $15 for an hour, or $35 for a full-day rental.

You’ll find kayaks to rent in front of several of the resorts in Puerto Peñasco. Sonoran Scuba, right at the Sonoran Sea Resort, is a great option.

rocky point kayaking

Kayaking is also popular at Bird Island, also known as Isla San Jorge. For $100, Del Mar Charters will get you there in an hour, with a kayak in tow, to explore the protected habitat and sea lion sanctuary.

You can also book a naturalist guide , who will take you on a kayak tour of the estuary.

Visit Bird Island (or Isla San Jorge)

If you’re looking for unique things to do in Rocky Point, a visit to San Jorge is high on the list.

Eco Fun has charters to Bird Island, which is home to a variety of marine life. The island is a protected natural habitat, and home to a sea lion sanctuary. If you’re lucky, a pod of whales or dolphins will swim by!

The six-hour trip will include snorkeling gear and a guide. You’ll also be able to take a kayak out on your own into the sea.

Lunch and an open bar are included on the trip to Bird Island from Rocky Point, for $114.

Del Mar Charters claims to have the fastest boat, which will get you from Puerto Peñasco to Bird Island in an hour.

Paddleboard Through Rocky Point’s Estuary

A standup paddleboard company, called SUPing the Sea rents paddleboards, which are ideal to explore the estuaries around Rocky Point.

A guide will take you into the Isla del Mar development, and through the natural estuary. The cost is $25 each.

You can also rent a paddleboard to go off on your own for the day for $50. They’ll deliver it right to you, wherever you’re staying in Rocky Point!

Rocky Point Jet Ski Rentals

You’ll see jet skis zipping around the sea right off the coast from the resorts in Peurto Peñasco.

The availability depends on the tides, but you can usually find someone renting jet skis right along the beach.

During our visit, the cost for a jet ski was $45 for half-an-hour on the water. They’re available until sunset each night.

rocky point jet ski

Banana Boats

Many of the resorts will also have a banana boat floating just off-shore. If you’re staying along Playa Hermosa (at one of the resorts on the sandy beach west of the downtown area) you’ll likely be able to find a banana boat and driver ready to take you and your friends on a ride.

The cost is $7 to $10 per person.

Things to do on Puerto Peñasco’s Beaches

You’ll find plenty of things to do along Rocky Point’s beaches, which are mostly sandy, and stretch for miles.

Rocky Point is Arizona’s closest beach, so it draws many of us down each year for both relaxation in the sand, and more adventurous activities:

Surf Casting & Fishing in Rocky Point

You’ll see people fishing along several of the beaches in Rocky Point.

The pier which juts out from the Sandy Beach adjacent to the Wrecked at the Reef restaurant is especially popular for surf casting. You’ll find a mix of tourists and locals casting into the sea.

The Tidal Pools in Puerto Peñasco

The tides come and go twice a day in Rocky Point, giving you plenty of time to explore the tidal pools during low tide.

rocky point tidal pool

A word of caution: be careful of sea urchins and other spikey sealife. A woman got stung by what she claimed was a “stingray” on our last visit. I’m sure it was a sea urchin. Either way, be careful of the spikes lurking in the rocks and reef!

You can also take a class to learn more about the ecosystem in the tidal pools.

Collect Shells at Las Conchas

Las Conchas is perfectly named, because it’s the beach in Rocky Point where you’ll find the best shells.

Especially at low tide, the sea retracts big time here, opening up huge swaths of sand and tidal pools to explore.

las conchas shells

Las Conchas is 10 minutes east of downtown Rocky Point. You’ll have to find parking on the street, and walk down between the vacation homes to the beach.

You can also visit the Seashell Museum in town.

The Pier at the Reef

The pier at the reef, along the Sandy Beach / Arenosa Beach area great for a stroll. It’s also popular to fish from.

You can find it right next to the popular Wrecked by the Reef restaurant and bar. In fact, you can use their parking lot for your walk down to the pier.

The pier itself is made of giant blocks of cement, piled on top of each other.

Get a Beachside Massage

Vendors on the beaches in Puerto Peñasco are highly regulated, so they won’t be overly aggressive with their products or services.

Depending on the time of year, you’ll likely find offers for massages on several Rocky Point beaches.

There will usually be a massage table setup during the day in front of Las Palomas and the other resorts on the Sandy Beach / Hermosa Beach area. On other popular beaches, like Mirador, you’ll usually have people offering massage services, too.

Las Polamas beach cabanas

Beach Volleyball

Several of the resorts have volleyball courts setup on their private beaches in front of the hotels.

Manny’s Beach Club

Manny’s reopened its beachfront doors, and is home to a bar, restaurant, live music stage, and a pool.

It sits right on Playa Mirador, east of the Malecon.

Things to do on Land in Rocky Point

I’m more of a beach person, but I know people love the golf and the dunes around Rocky Point, so let’s go over a few of those options.

rocky point dunes

Ride ATVs into the Desert

You’ll have more than a dozen ATV and quad rental companies in Rocky Point. The best deals might be found in town, where several businesses compete directly across from one another.

rocky point atv rental

It might be a bit pricier, but a great ATV rental spot with a lot of selection is next to Garufa, the steakhouse. It’s adjacent to a huge desert/dune area to explore.

The costs vary. It’s $30 for an hour on the smaller ATVs, and $45 for an hour on a four-wheel-drive.

The larger four-person ATVs are $230 for an hour, while the two-person Kawasakis are $130 for the hour.

puerto penasco atv dunes

You can take them anywhere in the desert, but not on the beach. They’re open from 9:30am to 6:00pm, and you have to be 16 years-old to drive.

Ride Horses in Rocky Point

The best place to find horses to take you for a ride in Rocky Point will be next to the entrance to Wrecked at the Reef. This is just west of the resorts along the Sandy Beach / Hermosa Beach area.

The horses will take riders along Rocky Point’s sandy beaches, and also through the adjacent dunes.

The cost for horseback riding when we asked was $30 per person, for six people.

Prices are negotiable, and you’re likely to get a better deal if you bring more people.

Play a Round on a Jack Niklas Golf Course

Vidanta’s properties east of Puerto Peñasco, the Mayan Palace and the Grand Mayan, feature an 18-hole par 72 course. It’s advertised as a Nicklaus Design Course, wich each hole featuring desert scenery, views of the Sea of Cortez, or views of the adjacent natural estuary.

The Mayan properties are a 45-minute drive east of Rocky Point. You don’t have to be a guest at the luxury resorts to dine at one of their restaurants or golf on the course. At the guard gate, just tell them you’re there to golf or eat, and they’ll let you through.

Hit the Driving Range at Las Palomas

The Las Palomas Resort is home to its own 18-hole course, called The Links at Las Palomas. It was designed in the dunes by renowned golf course architects Forrest Richards and Arthur Jack Snyder.

In addition to the 72-par, 18-hole championship course, there’s also a driving range, and a chipping and putting green.

I should move CEDO much higher on my list, because it’s a special place which features the best of both the desert and the sea. It’s the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans.

CEDO is a scientific research center, which bridges the US and Mexico, first established 40 years ago.

cedo research desert

It focuses on conservation, sustainable development, and environmental education.

CEDO has a visitor center in Rocky Point, where a huge whale skeleton welcomes tourists and scientists out front.

The organization also offers a wide variety of tours and excursions, from kayaking through the estuary to exploring tidal pools to boat trips to Bird Island.

Puerto Peñasco Oyster Farm

There are a few oyster farms in the estuaries outside Rocky Point, which are family-run or part of a Women’s Cooperative.

rocky point oyster farm

Pacific Oysters, or Japanese Oysters, are found in the waters of Puerto Peñasco. They’re harvested right from their beds, so they’re as fresh as possible.

You can order them to take home, or eat right at the El Barco restaurant . Cooked oysters are $15 for a dozen, while raw oysters go for $6 a dozen.  Stingray tacos are the other specialty.

You can even become an oyster farmer for the day .

Float Down a Lazy River

The resorts in Rocky Point have stunning pools, which are expansive and full of fun features. Several have pools designed specifically for children. Most have swim-up bars.

A few have lazy rivers, which are so enjoyable to float around.

They include Las Palomas and the Grand Mayan Resort.

The Street Art Galery, Rocky Point (yes, ‘galery’ with one “l”)

If you’re interested in taking home a piece of Mexican artwork, you might want to consider checking out the Street Art Galery. Depending on your taste, it might be a good opportunity to transport artwork back home in the trunk of your car.

Click here for a map to the location of the Street Art Galery .

You can check out their frequently-updated Facebook page , and contact the artists there, too.

Things to do in Rocky Point: Food, Bars, & Music

Puerto Peñasco is home to a lot of local restaurants serving traditional Mexican cuisine. The city also has a few surprises for people looking for a change.

Grab Coffee at KaffeeHaus

KaffeeHaus serves a mixture of German and Mexican breakfast foods. It’s become a staple for visitors in Puerto Peñasco.

A German man met and married his wife in Mexico, and opened this popular breakfast spot years ago. Bring cash, and be prepared to wait in line for a table

Enjoy Breakfast at Candy Cake

Candy Cake reminds me of a diner in the northeastern US. It’s colorful and quirky, and famous for its huge cakes and sweet treats. The logo almost resembles Dunkin’s.

candy cakes rocky point

The breakfasts are excellent and huge, and Candy Cake also does lunches.

I have to say: I don’t even really like French Toast, but this was perfection!

Just bring cash, because like many businesses in Rocky Point, Candy Cake does not take credit cards.

Try Italian Food in Mexico

I was pleasantly surprised to find such good Italian food in Rocky Point. Pane e Vino is at the top of a windy road, overlooking Puerto Peñasco.

pane e vino rocky point

While my favorite part of the meal was the tiramisu, I’d also recommend the bolognese and the pollo piccata.

They also have a great wine list from Mexico, Chile, and California.

Check out Roger Clyne’s Banditos

Independent rock musician Roger Clyne co-owns Banditos with his bandmates in The Peacemakers. Much of his music is inspired by the Sonoran Desert.

The band performs here frequently, and Banditos is also home to their brand of tequila: Mexican Moonshine.

Get “Wrecked at the Reef”

One of the most popular spots in Rocky Point is Wrecked at the Reef . Everyone is welcomed in this huge indoor-outoor bar/restaurant, day and night.

wrecked at the reef

During the day, you’ll find people dining outside in the sand. Granted, the food isn’t amazing, but you’re really here for the beachside entertainment.

At night, you’ll find live music, fire pits outside, and several bars serving inside and out.

Wrap: Things to do in Puerto Peñasco

There really is “something for everyone” here. I always imagine vacation destinations that can please everyone in a family. The kids, the moms, the dads, the outdoorsmen-and-women, the golfers, the shoppers, the boozers, the foodies, and the beach-snoozers.

My favorite thing to do in Puerto Peñasco is, perhaps, the simplest: sunset strolls on the beaches.

Rocky Point is as unpretentious as they come, and the people here are very welcoming (aside from the local police in Sonoyta, who have a reputation for targeting American drivers).

I also love that so many of the resorts have big BBQ areas and suites with kitchens and patios. It’s perfect for families who don’t want to eat out for each meal of the day.

Best Thing to do in Rocky Point: Sunset on the Beach

It’s right on par with a nap on the beach: free, available daily, and the perfect way to wind down each day. This photo was taken during low tide at Las Conchas Beach, but you’ll get an equally beautiful sunset view from any of Rocky Point’s beaches.

Puerto Penasco “Rocky Point” Mexico Ultimate guide: (with photos!)

Puerto Penasco, a little gem of a seaside retreat, is perfectly situated on the Sea of Cortez (aka the Gulf of California.) It will wow you with its clear blue water and sandy beaches that stretch picturesquely along the Gulf.

It lies in the far northern Senora region of Mexico, near the Arizona and California borders where they often refer to it as “Rocky Point.” Its drivability from the US makes it a great Mexican getaway option for those who don’t want to fly. Come relax, enjoy, and get a taste of authentic Mexico with a little side of the tropics!

In my complete visitors guide to Puerto Penasco I cover everything you need to know when planning your Mexico getaway

BUT… I should warn you that once you arrive, you may find it difficult to leave this perfect little piece of paradise. On each occasion, we found ourselves trying to figure out how we could extend our stay!

Table of Contents

Why you should visit Puerto Penasco

Because it is located high up at the top of the gulf, they are protected from harsh currents that tend to wash debris in from the ocean. So…no muck in the water! Puerto Penasco is also located within driving distance from the US…big bonus!

There is something for everyone here! Because there is such a wide range of activities, Puerto Penasco makes a perfect trip for families, couples, girl’s trips, guy’s trips, and group trips!

the weather

With its temperate climate you can visit year round. I cover the best times to visit in the next section.

Prices for accommodations are quite pleasing to the pocketbook and food is reasonable. Compared to other places situated directly on the beach, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I found the people to be very friendly and helpful.

fresh tasty food…fantastic!

In my opinion the #1 reason to visit Puerto Penasco…

THE WATER!!!

The Pièce de resistance…the reason I came…the water!!!! We were in search of a beach vacation with clear bathtub-like water where we could stay right on the beach. We found it! The water was a stunning shade of blue and the perfect temp. See for yourself!

blue sea water sea of cortez puerto penasco rocky point mexico

when is the best time to visit Puerto Penasco?

Our visits have been confined to late May and honestly, it seems like the perfect time to go. Despite visiting on a Memorial Day (holiday) weekends, the crowds were not at all bad (this coming from a person who despises crowds!) The weather and water temperature were absolutely perfect! This time of the year you’ll likely have sunny days, clear blue waters, perfect temperatures, and low humidity with little chance of rain. PERFECT!

Best time for water activities:

“…from late May to late June and from late September to mid October .” – weatherspark.com

Best time for General outdoor activities:

“…from mid March to mid June” – Weatherspark.com

Is Puerto Penasco crowded?

Notice anything missing in those photos? How about the crowds? Again, these were taken on Memorial Day weekend’s when one would expect a crowded beach. I hear it can get crowded during spring break, but otherwise, if you are looking for a beach vacation without the crowds your chances are very good!

Our favorite things to do in Puerto Peñasco

Wondering what to do in Puerto Peñasco? There are lots of things to do but here are a few of our favorites:

#1 Relax poolside, or on the beach either one.

Whichever condo complex you choose, it is likely that the beach and the pool will be just steps apart!

infinity pool sonoran sun resort puerto penasco mexico rocky point mexico

#2 Consume fruity drinks on the beach

Little stands on the beach sell cold drinks, made right in front of you with fresh fruit! Try the Pina Colada served in a pineapple (there’s a whole pineapple in there! the overflow served in a separate cup) or the frozen mango drink made with a whole mango! Delicious!

fruity drinks on the beach Puerto Penasco Mexico, Rocky Point Mexico

# 3 Get a massage right on the beach!

Along the beach you’ll find ladies with massage tables set up under beach umbrellas. Rates are ridiculously inexpensive compared to what I normally pay at home. We do several per visit…hey, who doesn’t like a good massage and how often do you have the opportunity to get one ON THE BEACH?!

beach massage Puerto Penasco Rocky Point Mexico

#4 take long walks on the beach

Remember to bring water shoes because there is a lot of Rock and Coral under that beautiful water (“Rocky” Point!)

sandy beach Puerto Penasco Rocky Point Mexico

#5 Banana Boat Rides

Banana boat operators will zip you back and forth along the shore, have you laughing hysterically, and leave you a wet but happy mess. What a thrill! I thought rates were a bit high for this activity, but it’s a lot of fun, and that’s what you’re here for! Here’s list of banana boat operators in Puerto Peñasco, but you can just catch a ride most places along the beach.

#6 Swim with sea lions!!!

This is one of the coolest things that I have done…EVER! You can Swim with California Sea Lions on San Jorge Island, aka Bird Island, a series of rocks about 27 miles out from Puerto ,Peñasco It is home to over 3,500 sea lions.

Tour operators will take you out on their boats and let you spend a couple hours there with the sea lions and other wildlife. In addition to the sea lions, you will see various types of birds and may even spot dolphins, sting rays and in season you might even spot a whale.

Bird Island excursions are about six hours. Snorkel, kayak, or get in and swim like I did! Our tour operators assured us that there are no sharks this far north in the Sea of Cortez, and I believed them…..because I wanted to.

Choose a company to take you by boat to the island. Here is a list of operators that take tours out to Bird Island (sorry I can’t remember who we used.)

bird island sea lions boat trip Puerto Penasco Rocky Point Mexico

Get in and play with the sea lions!

I recommend you get in and swim with these playful little guys. The old grumpy sea lions will bark at you from their rock, but these young sea lions are curious, frisky, and playful! See the footage here on my YouTube Channel of me getting in the water and getting up close and personal with these cute little guys!

#7 Sunset Cruises

We went with Del Mar Charters for a sunset catamaran cruise . They advertise: no cattle boats, no crowding, no party boats. Soft drinks, bottled water, beer and margaritas included. Oscar our captain was great!

#8 take to the skies in an ultralight!

Our group was able to catch a ride just down the road from Wrecked at the Reef (a favorite place to eat!) Two thumbs up from the riders!

See it in action!

Video of this fun ultralight ride over the Sea of Cortez can be viewed here on my YouTube Channel.

#9 party on a pirate boat!

When I say party, I mean party. This was a very lively atmosphere, so if you are looking for something relaxed and chill look at one of the other tour options. If a party boat sounds like a good time to you, then check out Rey Del Mar Charters for information their pirate boat tours in Puerto Peñasco

Wrecked at the Reef

Wrecked at the Reef serves up my favorite kind of dining experience…toes in the sand, right on the beach! or sit inside for a more lively atmosphere. They are always busy, so if you’re starving you might consider going somewhere else but be sure to make plans to eat here at least once. It is my #1 favorite place to eat in Rocky Point, and I personally could eat here every day! love the food! love the atmosphere!

Make your own meals!

One evening we picked up some fresh seafood at the seafood market, headed to the grocery store, and prepared a pretty darn good meal in our vacation rental.

My favorite spot to shop in Puerto Peñasco is on Rodeo Drive. Don’t forget to haggle! they expect it here, and if you don’t you’re paying too much! I can’t get enough of the inexpensive yard art.

While you make your way from shop to shop be sure to pick up one of the fresh warm churros they sell on the Rodeo Drive.

Getting to Puerto Penasco

We flew into Phoenix where my sister-in-law lives, she then drove us to Puerto Penasco. It’s a pleasant 3-4 hour drive, with the final hour or so of the drive through Mexico. Some people aren’t comfortable driving through Mexico, but Arizona and California residents burn up the highway between the US and Puerto Penasco without incident.

DO NOT SPEED IN MEXICO! COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AT ALL STOP SIGNS, OBEY ALL TRAFFIC LAWS.

If you get pulled over, you’ll be asked to pay a fine on the spot, and you just don’t want to deal with that. Obey all traffic laws and you will be fine.

Mexican Auto Insurance

“Mexican auto insurance is required for all vehicles – including rental vehicles. U.S. automobile liability insurance is not valid in Mexico, nor is most collision and comprehensive coverage issued by U.S. companies. Most rental car companies will roll the Mexican car insurance into your rental bill – but be absolutely sure that they do so when you rent your vehicle.” – puerto-penasco.com

You can purchase a policy around the boarder, or online (google it! I notice that trusted companies like Geico and progressive offer Mexican Auto Insurance Policies) It should run you less than $100 for a few days of coverage for a passenger vehicle.

Medical insurance

Many polices don’t cover you outside of the US. I have in the past purchased a policy from IMG Global for a very reasonable rate.

let’s talk money

Businesses in Puerto Penasco, right down to the frosty drink place and the massage lady on the beach, accept US dollars. I never saw a peso either time I was in Mexico. Most places accept US credit cards, but have some cash on hand for your frosty drink and your massage

Be aware of Dynamic Currency Conversion

Normally that is not a favorable situation for you.

Here’s what Rick Steve’s , my European travel guru, has to say about DCC.

“Some merchants… cheerfully charge you for converting your purchase price into dollars. If it’s offered, refuse this “service.” You’ll pay extra for the expensive convenience of seeing your charge in dollars. If your receipt shows the total in dollars only, ask that it be rung up again in the local currency. If an ATM offers to “lock in” or “guarantee” your conversion rate, choose “proceed without conversion.” Other prompts might state, “You can be charged in dollars: Press YES for dollars, NO for euros.” Always choose the local currency.”

So long story short, go ahead and let them bring you your credit card bill in pesos!

Border crossing tips:

Traffic can get backed up on high traffic days. Although our visits were on holiday weekends, we crossed on various days midweek in order to avoiding high traffic situations…and basically zipped right through. The US Department of State has complete information on crossing the US/Mexico border by land.

, Take Note: You must drive through Mexico in order to reach Puerto Penasco. Only you can determine if that is a choice that you are comfortable with. Things change so do your research. The US Department of State website publishes current travel advisories.

One tip always rings true, do all of your driving during daylight hours and OBEY ALL TRAFFIC LAWS . That being said, I’ve been twice, both times without incident other than being pulled over for a speeding violation and asked to pay the fine on the spot.

The condo complex

You must show ID to get into your condo complex for the first time. They will give you a wristband that you will wear for the duration of your stay. Each time you come and go through the guard shack to your complex you will need to present your wristband. Each complex has guards on duty 24/7. It felt very safe to me.

Puerto Penasco

Wandering around after dark probably isn’t a good idea. We left Wrecked at the Reef after dark one night and took a taxi back to the rental because we had walked there along the beach. Don’t expect to get a good rate. They know you are without options, but safety first!

And there you have it! My complete guide to visiting Puerto Penasco!

Exploring the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve’s Unique Volcanic Shield

The Pinacate Biosphere Reserve is an awe-inspiring protected area covering over 714,000 hectares of land in the northwestern region of Mexico. The reserve is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna species, including several endangered ones. However, one of the most striking features of the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve is its impressive volcanic shield.

The volcanic shield at the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve is unlike any other in the world. This shield is made up of various types of volcanic rocks and features unique formations such as cinder cones, lava flows, and crater rims. The shield is believed to have formed over 4 million years ago due to volcanic activity in the region, making it an ancient and remarkable landscape.

The impressive volcanic shield at the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve was formed by a combination of lava flows and explosive eruptions. Lava flows are the result of molten rock that has flowed out of a volcanic vent and then cooled and hardened. Explosive eruptions, on the other hand, are the result of a buildup of gas and pressure within the volcanic vent that eventually causes an explosive release of magma and ash.

The shield’s unique formations are a testament to the type of volcanic activity that occurred in the region. Cinder cones are the most common formation found in the shield, and they are created by a single explosive eruption that ejects rock fragments into the air. As these fragments fall back to the ground, they pile up and create a cone-shaped hill.

Lava flows are another type of formation found in the volcanic shield at the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve. These flows occur when lava erupts from a vent and then flows downhill, spreading out in a thin layer as it cools and hardens. The result is a smooth, solid surface that can stretch for miles.

Finally, the shield also features crater rims, which are circular depressions that form when the top of a volcanic cone collapses inward during an eruption. These craters can be several miles wide and provide a unique and breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape.

In conclusion, the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve’s volcanic shield is a remarkable and unique landscape that has been formed over millions of years. Its impressive formations and ancient history make it a must-see destination for anyone interested in volcanology, geology, or natural history. The reserve’s protection and conservation efforts ensure that this remarkable landscape will be preserved for generations to come.

The Magnificent Cerro Colorado Tuff Cone: A Geological Wonder

The Cerro Colorado Tuff Cone is a geological wonder that never fails to captivate its visitors. Towering at an impressive height of 120 meters and spanning one kilometer in width, this tuff cone is a breathtaking sight to behold. In this article, we will take a closer look at the fascinating formation of this stunning natural wonder.

Formation of Cerro Colorado Tuff Cone The Cerro Colorado Tuff Cone is the result of several phreatomagmatic eruptions that occurred from multiple vents. These eruptions took place over a period of time, resulting in the accumulation of tuff beds that formed the cone’s distinctive shape. As the tuff beds composing the southern rim of the cone dipped inward up to 20-25 degrees, portions of the cone slumped into the crater, giving rise to the current shape of the cone.

Geological Significance The Cerro Colorado Tuff Cone is a testament to the fascinating geological history of the region. The cone is composed of layers of volcanic ash, tuff, and pumice that were deposited during the phreatomagmatic eruptions. This type of eruption occurs when magma comes into contact with water, resulting in explosive eruptions that eject ash, tuff, and pumice into the air. The deposition of these materials over time results in the formation of tuff cones like Cerro Colorado.

A view of a beach from a height. The water is a nright blue, and these are rocks on either end of the deserted beach

"Rocky, wild and unpredictable" — why Baja California is ideal offroading country

Unfurling for more than 750 miles down a stick-thin peninsula, Baja California has long been known for water adventures — but new off-roading tours help travellers see it from a different perspective.

Gripping the roof handle and staring silently over the dashboard, I avert my gaze from the 160ft drop to my left. There’s just six inches of dirt road standing between us and the cliff edge: one wrong move from our driver, and the pickup truck we’re in is going straight into the Sea of Cortez.

The first time I visited Mexico’s Baja California, the world’s second-longest peninsula, it was on a backpacking trip through Central America. I hitchhiked and bussed over 650 miles from Tijuana, on the border with the US, to Todos Santos, just short of Baja’s most southerly point, Cabo San Lucas. Travelling along the Carretera Transpeninsular, I stopped at every major town along Baja’s main highway, wine-tasting in Ensenada, whale-watching in Guerrero Negro and swimming with sea lions on Espiritu Santo Island.

During those long drives, I’d stare out at the stark desert landscape for hours: salt-encrusted greasewood shrubs and giant cardón cacti sprouted from swathes of sand and clay-red mountains, which often turned candyfloss pink at sunset. But what caught my eye were the narrow dirt tracks, hundreds of them crisscrossing the desert like a map drawn in the sand, veering off the highway towards sun-baked sierras and hidden turquoise coves. One day, I thought to myself, I’d return to Baja California to see where those roads led.

Five years on, I’ve come to La Paz, in the south of the Baja California peninsula, to join Baja Expeditions’ first-ever overlanding trip. The company has specialised in whale-watching, kayaking and wild camping in the state since the 1970s, but has recently branched out with off-roading tours to encourage visitors to explore the peninsula’s less-visited interior.

A mobula ray jumping out of the ocean into view of the camera.

“People think Baja is just beaches and whales,” says our driver Mike Thorneycroft, a Canadian who moved to Baja California in 2020. “But it’s more than that. These trips are about getting people out of the resorts and into Baja’s least-visited communities, and learning some of their history and culture.”

Mike gets us past the cliff edge safely, manoeuvring around asteroid-sized potholes and boulders with ease as we climb up and over Sierra de la Laguna, part of a mountain range that connects Baja California Sur, the southern state of Baja California, with southern California in the US.

On slightly wider roads, I start to relax and take in the views: unlike the parched desert I’d seen from the highway years ago, these mountains are lush from recent hurricane rains, flourishing with lime-green mesquite trees and pink and yellow wildflowers. We cross arroyos — dry riverbeds that fill up after heavy rainfall — flowing with crystalline water, where orange butterflies and free-roaming piglets from a nearby ranch are taking a drink. A vulture and a flaming red cardinal bird join soon after.

“Baja California is perfect for off-roading,” says Mike, who organises and competes in long-distance off-road rallies across the state. “The roads are rocky, wild and unpredictable, changing quickly in the rainy season. But that’s what makes it exciting.”

Near the former silver-mining town of   El Triunfo, we stop at the Santuario de los Cactus, a community-run garden with some   of the oldest and rarest cacti on earth, including the cardón, the world’s largest cactus. The garden’s grey-moustached volunteer caretaker, Guadalupe ‘Lupe’ Gonzalez, shows us around, pointing out which cacti fruits are edible and how to extract water from their flesh. He also shows us cacti species used to treat kidney stones, stomach aches and open wounds.

“I learnt about the medicinal properties of cacti from the rancheros (ranchers),” says Lupe, caressing the spines of a 400-year-old cactus as if they were whiskers. He’s been caring for the plants here for more than 30 years and offers guided tours of the garden for a small donation. “But this knowledge comes from the Indians. There are none left here now, but we know how to survive in the desert because of them.”

A lone cacti in the desert in Mexico.

Before the Spanish arrived, Baja California was inhabited by three major Indigenous groups: the Cochimí, the Guaycura and the Pericú. Ancient rock paintings in Sierra de San Francisco, around 465 miles north of where I am and described by UNESCO as some of the most impressive collections of rock paintings in the world, suggest that these tribes had lived on the peninsula for at least 10,000 years.

Although the Spanish colonised Baja California much later than Mexico’s mainland, around the late 17th century, the culture and history of these local Indigenous groups was erased more quickly than in the rest of Mexico. Some experts believe this is because the region’s Indigenous groups were nomadic hunter-gatherers, who lacked the big cities and societal structures that helped preserve the legacies of the Mayans and Aztecs in other Mexican states. Today, very few Indigenous groups remain, with most living in the north of Baja California.

After a few hours of driving along the spectacular Barriles Santa Teresa coastal road, we make the steep descent to Palo Blanquito beach, where we’ll be spending the night. It’s a wild strip of sand, where milky-red cliffs crumble into a dazzling turquoise sea studded with volcanic rock. Come sunset, it’s just our truck on the beach and a flock of pelicans floating on the dead-still water, like rubber ducks in a jade-coloured bath. We eat refried beans and chicken burritos under the stars, watching a brilliant-white crescent moon rise over the water. That night, I sleep to the sound of the waves lapping gently at the shoreline.

The next morning, I watch the beach come to life from my tent. As the sun rises above the horizon, the sea turns from liquid silver to light pink, illuminating the inside of the tent with a warm glow. A family of pelicans — each one resembling a light aircraft — skim across the water with mouths agape, hoping to catch one of the flying fish backflipping through the air. Eager to join the action, I roll out of the tent and into the sea, plunging head first into the crystal-clear water with my mask and snorkel. Below the surface is an underwater city made of coral and volcanic rock, and colourful fish: I see a long, translucent cornetfish; a tiny cortez rainbow wrasse; and an enormous shoal of California yellowtail, the soft morning light bouncing off their tinfoil-like skin. It’s tempting to stay longer on this wild, empty beach, lounging on the rocks and floating in the warm turquoise waters as the resident pelicans do. But Mike has packed up camp and started the engine — it’s time to continue our journey through the desert roads of Baja California. “That’s the thing with overlanding,” says Mike, opening the passenger door for me to get in. “There’s always one more road to explore.”
