About the author
Mike gerrard.
I'm an award-winning travel and drinks writer, contributing to newspapers, magazines and websites in the UK, USA, and worldwide. My specialities are the USA, Greece, and the UK, and for drinks I specialise in spirits.
I publish my own website combining travel and spirits, Travel Distiled:
https://www.traveldistilled.com
My first book about the drinks business is not, in fact, about spirits, but the wonderful objects in which they're matured: barrels. Cask Strength: The Story of the Barrel, the Secret Ingredient in Your Drink is published in July 2023 by Matt Holt.
"Cask Strength is a must read for all bartenders! If you think you know all there is about barrel ageing and casks, guess again. Mike Gerrard delves deep into the history of barrels and casks with an incredible amount of detail. I feel like I've really upped my knowledge with this fantastic book!"
Paula Lukas, Mixologist/Beverage Consultant
I also write about food and drink for the travel pages, having covered vineyards in Greece and New Zealand, breweries in Belgium and Britain, restaurants in Paris, a chocolate shop in Lyon, the biggest wine cellar in the world (in Florida), interviewing an English sommelier in Paris, and sipping my way through the Champagne region of France, the distilleries of Cognac, Kentucky, Scotland and Jalisco, and the sherry bodegas of Jerez.
Combining music and travel is another love: I have written pieces about Bob Marley, the Beatles, Elvis Presley and Hank Williams.
More exotic travels have taken me camel-trekking in the Sinai Desert (right), walking in the Great Rift Valley, learning to jive in Barcelona, looking for orang-utans in Sumatra, staying with a farming family in China and working as a waiter in a restaurant on Zakynthos in Greece. As a result I now leave bigger tips.
I have also written or contributed to over 30 guidebooks, especially on Greece, France and the USA. In addition, I've written three radio plays for the BBC, presented a half-hour radio travel programme about Egypt, written fiction and humour for men's magazines, written a crime novel (Strip till Dead) and even written an erotic novel. I may be the only writer to have contributed both to Mayfair (I was in the same issue as Bill Bryson) and to The Baptist Times. Not to mention writing a few minutes of the UK's favourite TV soap, Coronation Street, when my father was a scriptwriter on the programme and he gave me three scenes to write.
My wife Donna Dailey and I publish and write our own travel websites about America's Pacific Coast Highway (https://www.Pacific-Coast-Highway-Travel.com), about Arizona, where we live half the year (https://www.arizona-travel-guide.com), about Greece (https://www.Greece-Travel-Secrets.com), and a general travel website, The Travel Pages (https://thetravelpages.net).

Win a five-night trip to Greece for two
National Geographic Traveller (UK) is partnering with Visit Greece , Aegean Airlines and H Hotels Collection to offer a getaway to Rhodes
The destination.
In the Dodecanese, Rhodes is a favourite for visitors to the Greek islands. The old town of Rhodes city captures the imagination with a UNESCO-listed medieval citadel, a gothic castle and tales of valorous knights. Outside the city walls, there are almost 160 miles of coastline and mountains carpeted by pine forests. Experience it from Boutique 5 Hotel & Spa, the local outpost of H Hotels Collection. This five-star, adults-only property is just a few steps from Kiotari beach and a 20-minute drive from the clifftop village of Lindos. Relax by the sea, unwind at the spa and end the day at Impressions, the on-site restaurant serving Mediterranean dishes like cod salad with sea fennel and capers, and sea bream with fish roe and cuttlefish ink foam.
Courtesy of Visit Greece, Aegean Airlines and H Hotels Collection, the winner and a guest will enjoy a five-night stay in Rhodes at Boutique 5 Hotel & Spa on a half-board basis. The prize includes return flights in comfort economy class from the UK to Rhodes with one checked bag per person, as well as return airport transfers in Rhodes. A member of Star Alliance and Greece’s largest airline, Aegean has been named Best Regional Airline at the Skytrax World Airline Awards in Europe 12 times in the last 13 years.

Greece has the longest coastline in Europe and is the southernmost country in Europe.
Greece has the longest coastline in Europe and is the southernmost country in Europe. The mainland has rugged mountains, forests, and lakes, but the country is well known for the thousands of islands dotting the blue Aegean Sea to the east, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Ionian Sea to the west.
The country is divided into three geographical regions: the mainland, the islands, and Peloponnese, the peninsula south of the mainland.
The Pindus mountain range on the mainland contains one of the world's deepest gorges, Vikos Gorge, which plunges 3,600 feet (1,100 meters). Mount Olympus is Greece's highest mountain at 9,570 feet (2,917 meters) above sea level. Ancient Greeks believed it was the home of the gods . Mount Olympus became the first national park in Greece.

PEOPLE & CULTURE
Family life is a very important part of life in Greece. Children often live with their parents even after they get married. Greeks live long lives and it is thought that their varied diet of olives, olive oil, lamb, fish, squid, chickpeas, and lots of fruits and vegetables keep them healthy.
Nearly two-thirds of the people live in large cities. Athens is the largest city, with over 3.7 million people crowding the metropolis. Nefos, the Greek term for smog, is a big problem in Athens. The Parthenon, the temple to goddess Athena atop the Acropolis, is deteriorating due to pollution and acid rain.
Olive trees have been cultivated in Greece for over 6,000 years. Every village has its own olive groves.
Most of the country was forested at one time. Over the centuries, the forests were cut down for firewood, lumber, and to make room for farms. Today, forests can be found mainly in the Pindus and Rhodope ranges.
Greece has ten national parks and there is an effort to protect natural and historic landmarks. Marine parks help protect the habitats of two of Europe's most endangered sea creatures, the loggerhead turtle and monk seal. The long coastline and clear water make Greece an ideal location to spot sea stars , sea anemones, sponges, and seahorses hiding in the seaweed.
The Greek landscape is covered by maquis, a tangle of thorny shrubs that don't need a lot of water. These plants include fragrant herbs such as thyme, rosemary, oregano, and bay and myrtle trees. Bird watching is popular in Greece where geese, ducks, and swallows stop over during their migration from Africa to Europe.
Greece abolished their monarchy in 1975 and became a parliamentary republic. Under the new constitution, there is a president and a prime minister. The prime minister has the most power, and is the leader of the party that has the most seats in the parliament. The president selects cabinet ministers who run government departments.
The parliament, called the Vouli, has only one house with 300 members who are elected every four years. Greece became part of the European Union in 1981.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is now on Disney+.
The first great civilization in Greece was the Minoan culture on the island of Crete around 2000 B.C. Wall paintings found at the ruins of the palace Knossos show people doing backflips over a charging bull. The Minoans were conquered by the Myceneans from the mainland in 1450 B.C.
During ancient times the country was divided into city-states, which were ruled by noblemen. The largest were Athens, Sparta, Thebes, and Corinth. Each state controlled the territory around a single city. They were often at war with each other.
Athens became the most powerful, and in 508 B.C., the people instituted a new system of rule by the people called democracy. But during that time, only men could vote!
The first Olympic Games were held in the southern city of Olympia in 700 B.C. to honor Zeus, the king of the gods. Only men could compete in the events such as sprinting, long jump, discus, javelin, wrestling, and chariot racing. The games were banned by the Romans in A.D. 393, but began again in Athens in 1896.
Greece was ruled by foreigners for over 2,000 years beginning with the Romans conquering the Greeks in the 2nd century. Then, after almost 400 years under Turkish rule, Greece won independence in 1832.

Arrive in Italy and settle into our traditional Italian villa, nestled into a hillside overlooking the city of Florence, capital of the Tuscany region. Walk cobbled roads into the city’s well-preserved historic center—the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. Visit the Accademia to marvel at Michelangelo’s marble masterpiece—the statue of David—and then wander down the city streets seeking out sculptures depicting figures from ancient Roman mythology, like Hercules and Medusa. Chat with vendors at an open-air market to learn the secrets of assembling the perfect Italian picnic, and then sit down to enjoy your lunch in a nearby piazza. In the evening, set out on a nighttime photo shoot to capture images of Florence in a different light. At a local restaurant, taste the crown jewel of Florentine cuisine, bistecca alla fiorentina , a truly exceptional cut sourced from the local Chianina cattle breed.
- Lucca, Italy

Greece: Walking in the Greek Islands
8 days, athens to santorini.
- Full itinerary
- Tour details
When someone says, “Let’s go to Greece!” the first images that come to mind are the sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean, white sugar-cube houses set high into the hills above the sea, and ancient sun-bleached ruins. And while these highlights are absolutely worth the trip, this eight-day odyssey will have you exploring the Greece many never see. You'll start by visiting Tinos, a sleepier island, relatively unknown to the masses that's renowned for the Church of the Annunciation, a Greek Orthodox pilgrimage site. From there sail to Naxos with its Venetian fortified mansions, cobbled alleys, and hilltop castle. From catamarans to kayaks and picturesque Byzantine churches to Citron distilleries, you’ll spend time learning more about the history of Ancient Greece and the melding of cultures through time.

6 of the best destinations to celebrate midsummer in Europe
As the length of the day reaches its maximum, Europe is preparing to mark midsummer. Here are the best places to join in with the revelries.
Marked on or around the longest day of the year — the summer solstice — midsummer is celebrated across Europe, especially in the north. The mystery surrounding the day means it’s difficult to say with certainty why or when these celebrations began, though folklore points towards farming and harvesting traditions to thank the sun for a fruitful year.
The celebrations today are still firmly rooted in local lore. Whether you want to commemorate by joining events steeped in tradition or party at a festival with thousands of others, here are some of the best destinations to celebrate midsummer in Europe.
1. Stockholm, Sweden
Midsummer celebrations are an integral part of Swedish culture and traditions. The origins of the festival in Sweden began by people decorating their homes and dancing around maypoles to celebrate the season of fertility.
Today, Swedes flock to the countryside with family and friends. If you don’t have any Swedish friends who can bring you along to the celebrations, Stockholm hosts several public midsummer events for visitors. Families visiting the capital, should head to Skansen open-air museum for folk music, flower and birch wreath making and the central event — the raising of the maypole. Alternatively, take a 75-minute boat trip to Grinda island for celebrations lasting until the early hours. In 2024, Midsummer Eve in Sweden is marked on 21 June.
2. Stonehenge , England
While it might at first seem an unlikely destination to celebrate midsummer, it’s perhaps one of the best to visit for historical relevance. Built around 5,000 years ago, Stonehenge’s standing stones align with the sun on both the summer and winter solstices, making for an ethereal and magical sight.
Though there are no specific activities at Stonehenge on the day, crowds gather in the thousands to see the spectacle of the sun rising behind the Heel Stone right into the heart of the structure, and to witness senior druid King Arthur Pendragon conducting a service at the historical site, as he does on every solstice. This year, the spectacular sunrise arrives on the morning of 21 June.
3. Oslo, Norway
While midsummer isn’t a public holiday in Norway as it is in Sweden and the events aren’t as extravagant as in Sweden, the day is still marked with outdoor parties and bonfires — in fact, Norwegian’s take their fires so seriously, the world’s largest open-air fire was built by the residents of Ålesund in 2016 for midsummer.
Typically, an animal effigy is set alight on the fjord waters of Sukkerbiten, and various other public events take place at the Norwegian Folk Museum , including yodeling, wreath making and horse and carriage rides. Midsummer Eve, or Sankthansaften, is celebrated on 23 June.
4. Riga, Latvia
Jāņi, as it’s known locally, is a pagan festival that’s still marked every year. This year, it takes place overnight from 23-24 June. The joyous festivities celebrate nature, with locals making wreaths from oak leaves and wildflowers and lighting bonfires. The mysticism associated with midsummer runs deep in Latvia, with many still believing in a whole host of folk traditions. For example, plants picked on the summer solstice are said to have the power to heal diseases and ward off evil spirits, while bathing in the morning dew is said to bring beauty and youth.
The capital city, Riga, offers countless public events throughout the day and night, from a midsummer fair in the Old Town to a free outdoor ball in a park with live music and food.
5. Barcelona, Spain
In Spain’s second city and throughout Catalonia, midsummer is celebrated from the evening of June 23 to the following day, as the Feast of Sant Joan. Marking the start of summer, the events revolve around fire, water and herbs — the three symbols of Sant Joan. The city is lit by fireworks and fires lining the streets throughout the night and, as with Latvian traditions, the holistic properties of herbs are said to multiply on this night.
The beach is the best place to be during the celebrations — restaurant tables line up across the beachfront, picnics are dotted around the sand and pop-up firework shops throughout the city make sure the night goes off with a bang.
6. Iceland
Icelandic folklore says the summer solstice blurs the lines between the worlds as we know them — animals can speak and turn human, and a roll about in wet grass can heal diseases.
Though there are no promises of a conversation with our four-legged friends, the Summer Solstice Festival in Reykjavík, taking place over 23-25 June, isn’t just a music festival. Expect a breathtaking rave inside a glacier or, for a slightly warmer alternative, a party in geothermal springs. The festival also includes tours to the natural wonders of Iceland, sharing ancient stories along the way.
