Antelope Canyon

Nature's beauty.

Mystical Antelope Canyon - a secluded slot canyon that is one of the last to allow photography and video to be taken there in the area.

Antelope Canyon, located near Page, Arizona is home to one of nature’s most wondrous creations – the slot canyon. Carved from the red sandstone for millennia by seasonal flood rains and wind, the canyons are narrow passageways that lead several hundred feet away from the mouth. The gorgeous sloping angles of the rocks – coupled with the shifts of light that make their way down from the rim of the canyon – combine for a scene that cannot be fully explained with words. Only 8 to 12 feet wide along the sandy floor, the slot canyons have been featured in Hollywood films and magazine publications around the world. But none of those images can match the one you’ll experience when you step into the canyons and see this wonder for yourself.

To the Navajo, we call the Upper Antelope Canyon – Tsé’bighanilí – which means “The place where water runs through.” For Lower Antelope Canyon, we call this place Hasdestwazi – which means “Spiral Rock Arches.”

The best times to visit:

  • If you are looking to take  photos of the sun beaming into the canyon , book a tour with the tour groups in Upper Antelope Canyon around 11am to 1pm for the months of March to October. To get extra time in the canyon, book a tour with a photography group – there may be an extra fee to book this type of tour.
  • If you want to do a  little hiking and want a little more seclusion , book a tour for the Lower Antelope Canyon area. This portion is not as busy as the Upper Antelope Canyon.
  • If you want less tourists,  visit during the months of November to March.

For viewing the Antelope Canyon, a permit and a tour guide is required . The tour group will assist you in purchasing the permit.

WARNING: Flash flooding can happen at any time. Please heed the warnings placed by the local tour companies and emergency messages announced by the Navajo Parks & Recreation Department for your safety.

Antelope Canyon Tours

I visited the canyon for the second time with these folks, just as good if not better. My in-laws and wife were just as surprised as I was in 2014 (My first visit) at how beautiful the canyon was and how wonderful the service is. Would recommend, and props to our Tour Guide Rosie, you rock!

The tour through the Antelope Canyon is something you will never forget, pictures don't do it justice, as it is hard to catch the raw beauty before you. Our tour guide Rick was great, informative and help with capturing the best pictures possible.

We had a wonderful tour with Rosie. We took a morning tour in hopes of avoiding the crowds. It worked out perfectly. Rosie was informative and warm. She helped us get best photos, gave us interesting facts about the Navajo and the canyon, and we were not rushed through.

I went with a couple of friends from college, tour guide was nice, she explained many photographic opportunities, she was very knowledgable, weather was nice, we all loved the experience.

Our guide made our trip so interesting and fun. He was very knowledgeable and an excellent photographer. He showed us the best spots for pictures and advised us on the best camera settings. This trip is a "must" for every traveler lucky enough to see this part of the country. I highly recommend Antelope Canyon Tours!

Our tour was amazing. I highly recommend this tour if you are in Page. The colors of the Sandstone is truly unforgettable. The guides are very knowledgeable and Sonny was very helpful in making sure we had taken the best photo possible. Definitely a must-see!

Availability

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday

12 Hours-Sedona / 10 Hours-Flagstaff

Your day begins with a scenic drive up Oak Creek Canyon (Sedona departures only) and views of Arizona’s highest mountains, the San Francisco Peaks. Next, we leave tall pine forests and travel onto the Navajo Nation for a stop at historic Cameron Trading Post with its impressive collection of souvenirs and Native American arts and crafts. Along the way, you’ll have views of the colorful Painted Desert cliffs in the distance as well as the Little Colorado River. Your guide will share information about the surrounding scenery, the Navajo people and their culture as you travel.

The day continues with a 1.5 mile round trip hike to Horseshoe Bend where you can view a unique meander of the Colorado River far below. Afterward, enjoy a delicious lunch and a view of the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell. With over 1,200 miles of shoreline, the lake is a spectacular site.

The crown of the day is a visit to Lower Antelope Canyon with a 1 mile hike with a Native American guide. This lower section of this corkscrew canyon requires a bit more effort but the reward is fewer visitors and a more intimate experience. The unique water and wind carved sandstone walls change color as the angle of light changes throughout the day. This portion of the canyon has a north/south orientation so light strikes some portion of the walls during most of the day. Your guide will talk about the formation of the slot canyon and offer suggestions for taking the best photos along the way.

Highlights include visiting two of the most stunning Southwest vistas, both Horseshoe Bend and Lower Antelope Canyon. You will walk out to Horseshoe Bend, which sits above the winding Colorado River, to get amazing photos and see why this vista got its name. In the afternoon, you will be astounded by the views in Lower Antelope Canyon, which change constantly as the sun moves across the sky, filtering lights softly across the stone walls. You will experience the beautiful color palette on the sandstone walls at the best time of day. Complimentary lunch included.

Closed end shoes are recommended and are required for our 3 private canyons. We discourage skirts and dresses due to the ladders and the terrain. We ask our guests to dress modest because we do accommodate families. Canyons can be up to 10 degrees cooler than the external temperature, so layers are recommended for your comfort. The temperature is usually five to ten degrees cooler, all year around in the canyons. Dress in layers to accommodate changing temperatures.

If it is windy, we do recommend a hat and handkerchief to cover your nose, mouth, and ears. Sand enters the canyon in all directions, so photographers please bring a cover for your camera, a plastic shower cap works best.

Ancient civilizations occupied Monument Valley for Thousands of Years

Monument Valley  (Navajo:  Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii , meaning  valley of the rocks ) is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. It is located on the Utah-Arizona state line, near the Four Corners area. The valley is a sacred area that lies within the territory of the Navajo Nation Reservation, the Native American people of the area

The landscape overwhelms, not just by its beauty but also by its size.  The fragile pinnacles of rock are surrounded by miles of mesas and buttes, shrubs, trees and windblown sand, all comprising the magnificent colors of the valley.  All of this harmoniously combines to make Monument Valley a truly wondrous experience.  Enjoy this beautiful land.

Our tour guide waited patiently for us to arrive as we were running thirty minutes behind, the time zone thing is real! Larry Team was our guide. He was friendly, courteous and full of great information about the history of Monument Valley. He gave us enough time at each point to take pictures and to explore. He helped us take family photos as well. It was excellent to be able to go into restricted areas and see some of the monuments up close. I highly recommend this tour.

This tour was well worth the cost! John was our tour guide, and he did an amazing guide! He was informative and funny! We saw so much! Make sure your battery is charged because you will take a lot of pics! Take the 8am slot as the weather was perfect!

We took the 3.5 hour tour and it was the highlight of our trip. Larry was our guide. One of the guests on our tour wanted to see specific sites from a tv show filmed in Monument Valley and Larry made sure we visited those sites in addition to the regularly planned stops. FYI the extra stops were incredible. Larry explained so much about Navajo customs, culture, and government.

Stay Informed

With our  newsletter, call for more information (602) 299-0171.

Antelope Canyon is open year-round; however, most people will try to visit mid-day during weekends from March through October, when the light shafts appear. Crowds will be at their peak then, which may make it difficult to snap that perfect shot Find better rates, fewer people and still amazing views during the off-season from November through late February, and especially in January. Though uncommon, Antelope Canyon may close during days of heavy rain or snow. This is more likely to happen from June to September, during Arizona's monsoon season.

What you'll need

You'll also need a prior reservation with an authorized Navajo guide to visit either Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon. Book online before you visit since tours can sell out weeks in advance. Additionally, you'll need:

  • A permit, though this is usually covered in your guide's fee (see below).
  • Good walking shoes, especially if visiting Lower Antelope Canyon.
  • See "What to bring" below for more specific items.

What it costs

Until recently, the cost varied significantly depending on whether you booked a sightseeing or photography tour. The tribe has reduced the availability of photography tours, however, because they frequently caused bottlenecks by allowing photographers to bring their tripod and spend more time setting up shots. Most 90-minute tours of Upper Antelope Canyon cost between $50 and $90 (slightly less for children), although some operators offer discounts on their early bird and last chance tours. Hour-long tours of Lower Antelope Canyon cost $40, and up to $80 for deluxe options. The price generally—but not always—includes taxes and the $8 Navajo permit fee. (Check with your tour company if you have any questions about additional fees.)

What to bring

Do: Wear closed-toe, sturdy shoes and layered clothing. Apply plenty of sunscreen, even in winter. Bring a hat or handkerchief for protection from the sand, and if you wear contact lenses, consider opting for eyeglasses instead. You are allowed to bring one bottle of water (and we highly recommend you do). Just make sure you take it out with you after the tour. Don't: Bring bags, purses, fanny packs, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, food and drinks—all are prohibited in the canyon.

There are no trash cans and no bathrooms in the canyon.

The trip into the canyon

Whether you start in Page or at the park's entrance, be prepared to ride in a four-wheel-drive vehicle through a sandy riverbed to the canyon. Each vehicle has a Navajo guide that ushers the group through, shares information about the formations and even helps stage some photos, including sand cascading over a rock ledge. Sand is everywhere. On windy days, dust can blow into your nose, mouth and ears. If you have a DSLR camera, cover it when you are not using it (a plastic shower cap does the trick) and never change lenses inside the canyon.

Photography tips

It's more challenging to photograph Antelope Canyon without a tripod, but you can still take amazing images. With a DSLR, opt for a high ISO setting and use a wide aperture. To photograph the beams of light, book a tour that will be in the canyon between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., May through October. Don't forget to look up, especially when the canyon is crowded. Several tour operators, such as Horseshoe Bend Slot Canyon Tours , also offer tours of nearby, nearly-as-spectacular canyons. Avid photographers may want to consider booking one of these tours, too. Simply inquire when booking.

Where to stay

Though hardly remote by some Arizona standards, Antelope Canyon is still considered a lengthy drive and hike for many areas of the state. Additionally, there are quite a few other amazing sites to see nearby— Horseshoe Bend , White Pocket and the Vermilion Cliffs , and Lake Powell —that many people choose to stay at least one night to get the most from their trip. Hampton Inn and Suites Page - Lake Powell This national chain is among the area's newer properties and ranks high among past guests for its clean, comfortable rooms, friendly staff and free hot breakfast. The large parking lot is able to accommodate boats, buses and RVs. The Bear's Den B&B Owners "Bubba and Deb-B" operate this cozy three-room bed and breakfast in Page that's fully ADA-compliant. Amenities include pillowtop mattresses, a small fridge and microwave, private bathrooms, and plenty of bear decor. Shash Dine' Eco-Retreat For a truly unique stay, book a Najavo hogan or sheepherder wagon at this sustainable glamping campsite and B&B operated by Baya, a member of the Navajo Nation. You will stay on Navajo land in one of eight simple accommodations—no electricity or running water, but fresh drinking water—with nothing but views for miles. Lake Powell Resort If a visit to Lake Powell and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is on your list, you can't get closer than a stay at this resort located at Wahweap Marina in Page. Hotel guests can book a boat tour, dinner cruise or rent their own powerboat for an unforgettable day on the water.

Nearby slot canyons

Antelope Canyon tours sometimes sell out, especially during high season. If tours aren’t available when you want to go, consider booking a tour of one of these slot canyons near Page.

Canyon X: Named for the point where its walls create an “X” overhead, this canyon sees far fewer visitors than Antelope Canyon but is equally breathtaking. Book a tour with the property’s owners, Taadidiin Tours .

Cardiac Canyon: Taadidiin Tours also offers private treks through Cardiac Canyon. While it requires some scrambling to see the 2.5-mile canyon’s sights, adventurers are rewarded with solitude unavailable in Antelope Canyon.

Mountain Sheep Canyon: Several companies, such as Black Streak Canyon Tours , guide groups through this off-the-beaten-path canyon with its undulating sandstone walls. Be prepared for a hike to its entrance.

Rattlesnake and Owl Canyons: Often toured together, these canyons provide dramatically different experiences. While Rattlesnake twists and turns, Owl has open areas. Book tours through companies like Adventurous Antelope Canyon Tours and Shun’Diin Canyon Tours.

Leave no trace

Antelope Canyon and the Navajo Nation lands are special places whose breathtaking beauty and natural habitats for local wildlife are worth preserving. Adhere to the Leave No Trace principles as much as you possibly can so future visitors may continue to enjoy.

Visiting the Navajo Nation: Things to Know Before You Go

Visiting the Navajo Nation - Monument Valley

Home > Travel Tips > Visiting the Navajo Nation: Things to Know Before You Go

“Yá’át’ééh.” Welcome to the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation is a Native American territory that lies in northeastern Arizona, southeastern Utah, and northwestern New Mexico. The Navajo Nation covers over 27,000 square miles with a population of over 300,000. It is the largest area retained by any federally recognized tribe. This area attracts thousands of visitors every year. It is important to remember that the Navajo have some cultural and social etiquette that are useful for non-natives to know before visiting the Navajo Nation.

Social Etiquette when Visiting the Navajo Nation

Visitors are welcomed with open arms in Navajoland. However, Navajo greetings and social interactions are a bit different than what non-natives are used to. Overall, Navajos value personal space and have a larger area of personal distance than non-natives. They use very little eye contact and generally do not hug when greeting someone new. Don’t forget, just like people in your hometown or community, the Navajo people like to be treated with respect. Nevertheless, once they get to know you, the Navajo are warm, inviting people who enjoy living in harmony with visitors.

Jewelry and Hair are Sacred

The recognition of personal space includes clothes, hair, and jewelry when touring the Navajo Nation. Non-natives are accustomed to touching a piece of jewelry or long hair in admiration. However, the Navajo would prefer a compliment in words, not in touch. In fact, it’s considered a violation of that personal space to touch a Navajo’s hair. Often, jewelry worn by the Navajo is breakable, can easily detach, or is worn for ceremonial purposes. If you are compelled to feel a piece of clothing or item of jewelry, it’s okay to ask. Although, be aware that an invitation to do so may not be offered.

Dances and Other Customs are Ceremonial

Dances like the Enemy Way Dance, Yeibicheii Dance, and others are mostly held for Navajos by Navajos and are not open to the public. However, pow-wows and dances are often governed by the seasons and are sometimes exhibited in public forums. Many of these events are of a religious nature and should be accorded the same deference as a church or prayer service, even if tribal members behave informally. Please do not ask ‘to see’ a certain dance, and refrain from applauding unless obviously apparent. At the same time, many Navajo fairs, festivals, and parades are open to the public. These are great for non-natives to attend to learn about the Navajo culture.

Be Mindful when Taking Photos while Visiting the Navajo Nation

Remember to be conscious of taking photographs of the Navajo Nation. A good rule of thumb is not to take photos without asking unless it is a public event. Special permits are required when photographing for commercial use.

Be Present When Visiting the Navajo Nation

Experiencing any new culture is a time to be present. The Navajo strive to live in harmony with Mother Earth, Father Sky, and the many other elements such as man, animals, plants, and insects. Visiting the Navajo Nation is a great time to turn off those iPhones and Androids. It is a great time to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of your everyday life. Immerse yourself in the Navajo culture and soak in every moment of this new adventure.

Visit the Navajo Nation With An Open Mind

A visit to the Navajo Nation promises a rich tapestry of experiences, from the awe-inspiring natural wonders to the vibrant cultural heritage. Approach this journey with an open mind. Respect the traditions and customs of the Navajo people, and you’ll find yourself immersed in a truly unforgettable adventure.

Navajo Nation History and Culture

The Navajo Nation’s history is deeply intertwined with the vast landscapes of the American Southwest. They have resided there for centuries. With a rich cultural heritage, the Navajo people, or Diné, have a unique language, traditions, and artistry that have endured through generations. Their history is marked by resilience. They navigated challenges such as the Long Walk, a forced relocation in the 1860s. After, they worked hard to preserve their cultural identity.

The sacred Navajo language has complex tonal qualities. It reflects a profound connection to the land and the spiritual beliefs embedded in their daily lives.

While visiting the Navajo Nation, take the time to appreciate the nuances of the Navajo language, a vital aspect of their cultural identity. Engaging with locals and learning a few basic phrases can enhance your overall experience and foster a deeper connection with the community.

Navajo art, including intricate sand paintings, silver jewelry, and vibrant rugs, is a testament to their creativity and craftsmanship.

Many local artisans create these masterpieces, showcasing their skill and preserving the traditional craft. Consider supporting the local economy by purchasing authentic Navajo art as souvenirs when visiting.

Navajo Food Culture

Navajo food is another highlight when visiting the Navajo Nation. Their tacos are a local delicacy not to be missed. Experience the unique flavors that blend traditional ingredients with a modern twist. This reflects the fusion of cultures in this diverse region.

Today, the Navajo Nation is a vibrant community, embracing tradition and progress. They welcome visitors to share their culture’s beauty and the breathtaking landscapes they call home.

Explore the Navajo Nation’s national historic sites to delve deeper into Navajo history.

Navajo Nation Historic Sites

When visiting the Navajo Nation, you can travel back in time to see how the Anasazi people (or Ancient Ones) lived thousands of years ago. Well-known landmarks of the Navajo Nation include Window Rock, Canyon de Chelly, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon, and 186 miles of Lake Powell shoreline.

Navajo Nation parks are scattered throughout the region. Each offers a unique perspective on the landscape and history of the area. The tribal parks are managed by the Navajo Nation government, ensuring the preservation of these natural and cultural treasures.

Four Corners Monument

While in the area, don’t miss the chance to visit the Four Corners Monument. It is a landmark where Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico meet. The unique geographical location of this Navajo tribal park allows you to stand in four states simultaneously. It is a novelty worth experiencing.

Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon is a stunning slot canyon with smooth, flowing curves carved for centuries by wind and water. It is a must-visit in your exploration of the Navajo Nation. Located within the Navajo reservation, this geological wonder is a photographer’s dream. Guided tours are available, providing insights into the canyon’s formation and significance to the local Navajo families who consider it sacred.

Colorado River Gorge

For a taste of adventure, consider exploring the Colorado River Gorge. There, the river has carved a path through the red rocks of Northern Arizona. The rugged beauty of this landscape is another testament to the resilience of the Navajo people who have called these lands home for generations. Engage in outdoor activities offered by the Navajo Nation recreation department, such as hiking or rafting, to truly appreciate the breathtaking scenery.

Monument Valley

Monument Valley, with its iconic red mesas and buttes that seem to defy gravity, is not to be missed when visiting the Navajo Nation. This sacred site is a geological wonder and a significant part of Navajo history and culture. It is featured in countless films and photographs. Guided tours through the valley offer a deeper understanding of the spiritual significance attached to these majestic formations. They provide a glimpse into the stories passed down through generations.

Canyon de Chelly

Explore the ancient ruins of the Anasazi people in Canyon de Chelly. It is a breathtaking sandstone canyon complex that showcases the ancient history of the Anasazi people. Carved by the forces of wind and water, the canyon is home to well-preserved Anasazi ruins, petroglyphs, and pictographs. These offer a tangible connection to the region’s past.

Guided tours by Navajo guides provide insights into the cultural and historical significance of the canyon. Thus, they are an immersive experience that unveils the layers of stories etched into its walls.

Grand Canyon

In the expansive landscape of the Navajo Nation, the Grand Canyon stands as a testament to the geological wonders that define the area. While not directly within the Navajo reservation, it’s a nearby marvel worth exploring. It offers a different perspective on the natural beauty that surrounds the region.

No matter what park you choose to visit within the region, you’ll find yourself immersed in the rich tapestry of Navajo history and culture.

“Ahéhee’” (Thank you, in Navajo) for choosing to explore the beauty and history of the Navajo Nation. We invite you to the Navajo Tourism Department’s website for more information about the Navajo Nation. Often times, navigation and/or Google Maps are unreliable, so we strongly recommend visiting the Navajo Nation with a tour guide who knows the area intimately.
