After the sun sets, night safaris take over from typical game drives. Started by the fantastic Singapore Zoo in 1994, they have become increasingly popular over the last few years. On top of the excitement of a safari experience, the advantage of night safaris is that tourists get a unique chance to see nocturnal animals when they’re at their most active. Instead of watching a big cat snooze in the sun, for example, you’ll be able to glimpse their hunting patterns and routines! You could also spot creatures that rarely appear during the day, from aardvarks to genets.

When evening falls in hot destinations, the setting sun takes away much of the overpowering heat of the day – another advantage of heading out into the bush or rainforest at night. The anticipation will start to build as darkness comes when the calls of animals and birds increase to the backdrop of a vibrant, colorful sunset. Nothing beats sitting with a sundowner and waiting for your night safari adventure to begin! Sometimes, an afternoon game drive will be interrupted for cocktails with the sunset before visitors continue with a night drive and head back to camp for dinner.

On a night safari in Africa, you could be lucky enough to see lions preparing for their evening hunt and setting off into the bush for a kill. A leopard might be spotted on a nearby tree or bushbabies taking a leap from branch to branch through the canopy, whilst elephants trudge silently through the moonlight.

Unfortunately, only camps and lodges on private land outside the boundaries of national parks are able to offer night safaris. But these top night drive safari destinations will be sure to offer excitement!

Abu Camp, Botswana

Named after a legendary elephant, Abu , this unique camp in the Okavanga Delta in Botswana offers one of the best experiences for interacting closely with elephants. Go for an afternoon elephant ride through the Delta for a unique perspective on the wildlife, followed by an exciting night drive through an area rich in game and nocturnal hunters like lions and leopards.

In the famous Sabi Sand Private Reserve near the Kruger Park, this private resort is both the perfect place for sundowners with a view and a great location for a night drive. The huge diversity of wildlife means you’ll be sure to spot some wonderful animals and the knowledgeable guides and trackers will be able to illuminate a host of nocturnal species on a night safari.

The Night Safari Zoo, Singapore

The world’s first nocturnal zoo, the vast Singapore attraction has over 1,000 species in an open-air tropical rainforest setting. Unlike traditional zoos, it offers animals the natural habitat and day-night cycle which they would use in the wild.

It’s obviously not in Africa, but is a pretty special experience. Highlights include rare species such as tarsiers and Indian rhinos and the atmospheric lighting (similar to moonlight) spotlights animals without disturbing their behavior  Visitors can soak up the atmosphere of the rainforest on foot via one of the walking trails or by tram; the animals are separated by natural barriers rather than typical prison-like cages for a real safari experience.

Night Safari Tips

• Rules and regulations restrict where a night drive can take place in Africa. Be sure to check before travelling that the camp or reserve where you’re staying offers night safaris to avoid disappointment.
• Some safari camps have floodlit waterholes where you can spend a lot of time watching the comings and goings around this central area, rather than just driving from one place to the next to spot different species.
• Even in the middle of summer, the temperature drops fast after the sun sets so wrap up warm for a night drive. Dress in layers that can be easily taken off or added if you’re going out during both the afternoon and evening.
• Just like on a regular game drive , keep noise and movements in the vehicle to a minimum for a better chance to spot animals and observe their actions.

Night Safari Photography Tips

Taking photos on a night drive can be challenging (see our post of safari photo tips). Many camps use red filter spotlights for illuminating animals as it’s much better for the animals and does not affect their night vision in the same way as white light. Camera flashes will also be prohibited as they can disturb the night. However, with a modern digital camera, it’s easy to brighten your ‘red’ image with the help of a computer editing program afterward.

• Firstly, increase the sensitivity (ISO) on your camera to 1600 or more.
• Adjust the aperture to the maximum setting, such as 2.8 or 4.0.
• Change the shutter speed to 1/40.
• Turn off the flash.
• On a computer, remove the red tint by adjusting the colour.
• Add a sepia or black and white tone to improve the overall quality.

No safari is complete without a night game drive – here are 10 of the best

Shivers sped down my spine as a hyena crept into our Jeep’s headlights in the night. Then another hyena joined, and further back, we saw a third and fourth set of eyes. We heard piercing cackles, and our safari guide Kebby Arabang, resident tour director for Abercrombie & Kent in Botswana , told us it was a hyena calling for back up in a stand-off with a lion.

We knew the lion – a lone male gorging on buffaloes near camp. We’d also seen the hyena – their den, their cubs, and their paw prints by my tent. I enjoyed dozens of game drives throughout my time in Botswana, but none left me as awestruck as this twilight expedition.

Around the world, a growing number of lodges now offer night safaris for travellers. These trips pair the animal kingdom’s after-dark excitement – up to 70 per cent of species are active from dusk to dawn, after all – with a soft place to land and dine between excursions.

Most wildlife travellers dream about visiting Kenya’s  Masai Mara National Reserve , but there’s a lesser-known and significantly less crowded safari escape just northwest of it: the 35,000-acre  Olare Motorogi Conservancy . The getaway, known for its action-packed lion viewing, protects the ecosystem’s animals and supports the local Masai people via community-based tourism . Unlike the Masai Mara National Reserve, night drives are allowed in Olare Motorogi Conservancy; they’re available via  Mahali Mzuri – Richard Branson ’s posh 12-tent safari camp. You may see big cats like leopards or lions, or rarer aardwolves, porcupines, honey badgers, and bush babies. But a night safari isn’t the only time to catch these elusive creatures. Sweden’s elusive wolf is easier seen than heard – and your best bet at either is after dark. On an overnight wolf safari with  Amazing Nature Scandinavia , expert guides take you out on foot, and in a van, through central Sweden’s liveliest wolf spots. Actually spotting the elusive wolves can be tricky, but there’s an 80 to 90 per cent chance you’ll hear their howls. This seasonal summer adventure pairs with camping in a wolf-pack area; bookend the trip with a stay at a unique central Sweden getaway like  Nasets Marcusgard . The trip starts with an evening boat ride, followed by a hike and dinner by a campfire, then the ultimate twilight treat: floating down the river beneath a blanket of darkness – with only one torchlight per boat to illuminate the potential leopards, porcupines, and gibbons en route. The journey concludes with a night in the park ecolodge’s traditional Lao bungalows.

Local guides run the tour with support from partners like the Wildlife Conservation Society; this tourism model encourages park-adjacent communities to protect the region’s endangered species.  Book it as a standalone expedition with pre- and post-trip stays at  Xayphasouk Hotel , a modest property with spacious rooms and a hotel restaurant in one of the closest main towns, Sam Nuea (around four hours away by car). Alternatively, join a Laos itinerary by tour operator  Audley for an overnight in Nam Et-Phou Louey, then connect to your choice of half a dozen other destinations throughout the country. 

Warrigal Highland Rainforest Reserve

Take a moonlit walk among Australian wildlife

Admire the flying fox, tree kangaroo, ringtail possum, and a host of other tough-to-see Australian critters with a  Wild Watch night safari hosted by longtime birding and wildlife photography guide Jonathan Munro. Most visit the biodiverse Everglades National Park by day, but half the fun is after dark – particularly on an  expert-led paddling tour . Possible nighttime wildlife sightings run the gamut: horned owls, bobcats, frogs, and even panthers. The soundtrack for the evening? A cacophony of lubber grasshoppers and frogs, who keep the entertainment going well into the morning. The tour runs for half the year, from December through March . Glamp nearby in Everglades Adventure Tours’ low-key Chickee Huts , a series of bungalows built by the Seminole Indians with thatched roofs, screened-in walls, and swamp and grassland panoramas. Night Safaris

Join amazing night game drives in the masai mara & beyond.

Do you imagine all the wildlife safari action occurs only during the day? Not really. There is a nightly shift in the fields and forests you might not know about.

When the sun begins to fade and the familiar characteristics of the savanna and bush transform into a different sort of world, the air cools, the big cats come alive and new species emerge from their daytime hiding spots.

This is the domain of the African wilds at night, where up to 70 percent of the animals become active throughout the darkening landscapes prowling, hunting, and scavenging until the first light of dawn.

It is the time of the night safari – when the heat of the day dissipates and is replaced by gentle breezes, starlight, and the moon casting its cool shadows upon the land. With your safari guide in your 4 x 4 Jeep, you can move purposefully on the savannah or through the bush, until the lit eyes of a lion, leopard, or other night-prowling creature stare back at you through the inky dark.

Bundled up with your blanket and thermos, a night game drive can take on a feeling of tingling anticipation as the sounds of a big cat, a hippo, or the scurrying nearby of some unseen creature remind you to move quietly as you have entered their nocturnal realm.

Prepping for Your Night Game Drive

Your night safari can be a continuation of your daytime game drives. It can also occur after you’ve had a relaxing dinner or a sundowner – a traditional evening cocktail out in the field. As the sun’s final orange glow starts to fade you get ready for a different sort of after-dark experience.

Most night game drives begin between 7 and 9 pm and last about two hours.

We’ve already mentioned bringing a blanket and thermos to stay warm – even in equatorial Africa, the evening temperature can dip quite rapidly. By all means, bring insect repellent as these tiny pests also make their presence felt at night. And don’t forget your camera; you can successfully take photos on a night game drive and we’ll give you some tips below.

Another way to prepare is to be aware of the kinds of wildlife you’re most likely to encounter, so you’ll know where to look and how to identify them. Bright glowing eyes reflecting back at you are obvious but also look for moving shadows nearby, a clear sign of wildlife.

What Nighttime Wildlife You May See

As the last of the daylight disappears, you may hear an increase in the type and number of bird calls and the sounds of the wildlife stirring all about.

Many of the animals that wake with the moon differ from those you’ll see on a daylight game drive. Or, their behavior can be markedly different. Those lions or leopards seen napping during the hot daylight hours come alive in the cool air of the night.

The big cats are their most active during these hours and it’s exciting to see a pride of lions moving ahead in formation on a nighttime hunt. 

Your guide knows the best spots to find the wildlife during these after-hours and you may spot rhinos and elephants moving quietly and mysteriously through the moonlight.

Besides the larger nocturnal animals there is another world of smaller wildlife that comes alive during the hours from dusk to dawn. You might see little bushbabies leaping about, and unusual species like the aardvark, honey badger, porcupine, chameleons, tiny elephant shrews, and civets and genets – small, cat-like mammals.

Where Can I Go On Night Safaris?

You’ll need to do some advance prep to learn where night safaris are offered as most national parks don’t allow for game drives after dark. But we can help! Africa Kenya Safaris will create a night safari for you on many private reserves throughout the country.

Not far from Nairobi, you’ll find the versatile private park of Ol Pejeta Conservancy , home to all of Africa’s “Big Five” as well as the African wild dog and sanctuaries for rhinos and chimpanzees. The Conservancy is an excellent location for night game drives as it offers glimpses into its many prides of lions and leopards.

If you are staying at one of Kenya’s coastal resorts, you may want to visit Taita Hills Wildlife Conservancy for both day and nighttime safaris. The salt licks here are excellent spots to see nighttime wildlife and the nearby watering holes are softly lit to enhance your viewing.

A select group of private conservancies surrounding the Masa Mara National Reserve also offer excellent opportunities for night game drives. If you’re visiting the national reserve for daytime game viewing, we can extend your safari into the evening with a night game drive at the Mara North , Mara Naboisho , Mara Siana , Mara Triangle , or Olare Motorogi Conservancies .

Tips For Nighttime Photography

Although nighttime photography on the savannah and in the bush has its challenges, it’s not impossible, especially now with sensitive digital cameras and computer imaging software.

The only ambient light available on your night safari is what nature provided – from the stars and the moon. The animals aren’t used to bright lights which can frighten, confuse, and scare them off. Often your guide will use a spotlight to see the animals – fitted with a red filter which is softer and doesn’t have an adverse effect. The same goes for your photography – never use a flash when photographing wildlife at night.

So what are the workarounds to ensure you can get a decent image of that leopard overhead or a nearby grunting hippo?

Your camera has settings that will help gather the available light:

• Adjust the sensitivity of your camera to an ISO of 1600 or more if possible.
• Open the lens’ aperture as wide as it will allow, somewhere between 4.0 and 2.8.
• Slow the shutter speed to 1/40 of a second.
• Remember to turn off your flash.
• And finally, you can push the visibility of the image and remove any red-eye with a photo editing program on your computer.

Using the above tips you should be able to create lasting photos of your nighttime game drive and proof that you were there, witnessing the mystery, the drama, and the incredible struggle for survival filling these darkened fields that only ends at the coming of the dawn.

Night Vehicle Safari

The bush comes alive at night. Back in the 1980's there were camps across Africa which would regularly spend half the night out on safari, catching up on sleep during daylight hours. These days serious night safari can only be found at a select few locations which are well worth seeking out if you want to experience some serious predator action.

Animals such as lions and leopards hunt almost exclusively in the hours of darkness.

Whilst creatures including servals, porcupines, pangolins, honeybadgers and bushbabies are only seen with any regularity at night.

Night vehicle safari is a very specialist activity which requires great skill on the part of the spotter.

It also often takes great patience on the part of the guests, there can be long hours of nothing.

But the highs can be intense, with hunts playing out before your eyes, as if you were invisible.

Unfortunately most camps these days offer very watered down night vehicle safaris.

If you want some serious safari action, then it is worth seeking out those few camps which do still take their night vehicle safari seriously.

Night vehicle safari

Night vehicle safari is an activity which is specifically intended to seek out and follow nocturnal animals whilst they are at their most active.

Many of Africa's most interesting animals are most active at night. Lions and leopards hunt almost exclusively in the hours of darkness and a whole host of interesting creatures such as porcupines, pangolins, honeybadgers and bushbabies will only usually be seen at night. 

Night vehicle safari is a very specialist undertaking which requires great skill on the part of the spotter and driver and often great patience on the part of the guests.

The art of night safari seems to have very much diminished in recent decades, so much so that has become difficult to identify many places which really take it seriously.

Evening vehicle safari

The most common experience these days is what we refer to as an evening drive, a much watered-down version in which guests are typically driven back to camp from a remote sundowners spot, perhaps an hour of which is under the cover of darkness. It's a pretty gentle affair which can add a pleasant extra dimension to a safari, but it is not a proper night vehicle safari.

This type of evening drive is most commonly experienced in Zambia, Botswana and South Africa. Most of the parks in Tanzania and Kenya require vehicles to be back in camp by sundown.

A proper night vehicle safari is altogether more serious.

Usually heading out after dinner, the vehicle typically stays out in the bush for two to four hours, even returning well after midnight if interesting events transpire. The key reason for staying out so late is that these are the hours where lions and leopards most commonly hunt.

The ambition of a proper night-drive is to find these cats out on the prowl and to follow them, hopefully all the way to a kill. It can be an incredibly dramatic experience.

With lions it is more than possible to park the vehicle in the line of a waiting lionesses whilst the prey is chased into the trap, the kill often being made within yards of the vehicle. It is remarkable how the whole hunt continues as if you were not there, despite the torches picking out both predator and prey.

With a leopards it is often possible to drive the vehicle right underneath the tree in which the cat has dragged the prey, even to within touching distance of the leopard's tail, although this is not necessarily recommended.

The downside of a proper night-drive is that it it really disrupts the usual camp schedule and can involve some very tough hours of driving around in the cold darkness, not finding very much at all to look at. It is very much an all-or-nothing experience, almost totally dependent on finding predators on the prowl. 

These days the vast majority of guests and guides are simply not prepared to put in the effort, the magnitude of the experience has not been sufficiently communicated to them over the years and the whole thing has virtually died out. The net result is that the understanding of what is required and the extraordinary level of skill needed to operate this type of safari are now largely lost.

Animal welfare

There is also a strong body of opinion claiming that night vehicle safaris are bad for the wildlife, that they interfere too much with the hunt and cause distortions to the natural balance.

Some of us have spent years working in specialist night-drive camps and are convinced that this is not the case, especially with the advent of red light torches in recent years. We strongly suspect that guides and camps just can't be bothered to do it.

However with the advent of modern heat-seeking and night-vision equipment, a new style of proper night drive safari will soon start to develop and we are presently working closely with a handful of safari operators to make this a reality.

How to do your very own ‘night on earth’ nighttime safari experience.

F rom capturing footage of rarely seen species to documenting unique, new, or never-before-seen behaviors, nature documentaries offer glimpses into the lives of animals around the world , allowing us to better understand and learn about them. But due to technology and access, their nocturnal activities have largely remained a mystery to us.

Netflix has shined a light — literally and metaphorically — on what animals do in the shadows with its new nature series, Night on Earth . Using advanced thermal imaging and low-light technology, Netflix’s crew was able to capture unprecedented footage of the nocturnal behaviors of wildlife all over the world.

The first episode, “Moonlit Plains,” started with a classic nature documentary mainstay: life on the African savanna. With the use of low-light night-vision cameras, the crews documented how lions hunt under the light of a full moon and how other animals stay safe until daybreak.

And now it’s not just documentary film crews who can see what goes on at night on the African plains — at safari lodges on the Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa , there’s a new nighttime safari experience that utilizes similar technology so guests can observe animals and their habits at night. As Africa’s first infrared nighttime excursion, it’s changing the way humans and animals interact on safari.

With the help of a professional videographer, a guide, and a tracker, guests on the Night Eye Experience spend an evening driving around the roads of the reserve in a specially equipped vehicle that’s rigged with an infrared camera and three monitors. Most of Phinda’s trackers are of the Zulu tribe, a local ethnic group that’s called the area home for thousands of years and are intimately familiar with the land and the habits of the animals. Using this knowledge, the tracker looks for trails and listens for noise to find different animals. When an animal or group is spotted, the cameraman zooms in to give the guests sitting in the vehicle front-row seats to hunts and other nocturnal behaviors.

Night is an especially great time to observe hunts by Africa’s great cats like lions, cheetahs, and leopards. The darkness gives them the perfect cover to get even closer to their prey and have the surprise advantage, so most successful hunts take place at night.

Night safaris are also ideal for seeing more nocturnal animals like bat-eared foxes, honey badgers, and springhares.

“The primary focus is to actually enhance the onboard safari experience by providing guests with better visuals than they would ordinarily be seeing,” says Scott Dyson, the founder of the Safari Film Crew that developed the experience.

One of the main benefits of using infrared technology during night safaris is that it doesn’t disturb the wildlife; flashing headlights or flashlights are disruptive to the animals, so using non-intrusive cameras provides for more ethical observation. Also, some animals aren’t accustomed to the safari vehicles and are likely to run away from the unfamiliar noise and lights before guests can get a good look at them. Using zoom-in cameras, guests are able to observe from a distance, leaving the animals in peace.

“Over the last 30 years, the photographic safari experience hasn’t transformed until recently, with the introduction of innovative infrared technology at Phinda,” says Sunit Sanghrajka, the founder and CEO of bespoke tour operator Alluring Africa , which partners with Phinda and the travel company that operates its lodges and programs, andBeyond. Sanghrajka continues, “If your tracker or guide spots something far off such as a genet, the camera zooms in and you can see its features in full detail without needing to struggle to point and adjust your binoculars… I especially valued the ability to observe wildlife completely undisturbed.”

Since the nighttime safari takes place in Phinda, guests are almost guaranteed wildlife sightings. The Phinda Game Reserve encompasses 28,555 hectares (70,560 acres) of diverse African habitat ranging from forest to grasslands. The reserve has a reputation for up-close sightings of rarer, harder-to-find wildlife like cheetahs and black rhinos and is also home to Africa’s Big Five: lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards, and rhinos.

At the end of the safari, as a souvenir, guests also receive a two- to three-minute video compilation of the animals seen during the experience so they can sit back, relax, and be thoroughly in the moment with the animals.

Encounter the elusive nocturnal animals of the Kruger National Park on an evening safari in the wilderness.

An evening safari in the Kruger National Park is always a safari highlight. Depending on the lodge or camp you are staying at and the time of the year, a nighttime game drive typically departs between 16:00 and 17:00 and returns after dark. You are truly entering the bush at its most magical time. As the sun begins to sink further and further beyond the horizon, the nocturnal world awakens. Hippos pull out of their pools for hours of covert grazing. Cats shrug off the idle habits of the day and ready themselves for the hunt. Burrowers ditch the safety of their dens for nighttime feasting. Owls fill the evening with haunting hoots and jackals begin to sing.

This is a great time to find a pride of lions on a fresh kill, snarling at circling hyenas, or a leopard dragging its meal up a tree. Though spotting lion, leopard and hyena in the dark is incredibly thrilling, it is often the shyer animals that are practically exclusively spotted at night that provide the most memorable encounters.

Porcupines are the largest rodents in Southern Africa. They are monogamous and typically live as mated pairs of adults, often sharing up to six burrows between them, and raising their young and defending their joint territory together. However, they typically forage alone. Many people mistakenly believe that porcupines shoot their quills to defend themselves. Their actual defense is charging into their attacker and stabbing them with their quills.

Large-spotted genets occur exclusively in South Africa. Despite their appearance, these cat-like critters are not actually related to cats and form part of a medium-sized mammal family known as viverrids. Genets are typically spotted in trees when a flashlight catches the glow of their large, luminous eyes. Long-necked, rather bushy-tailed and short-legged, these striking creatures boast a beautiful combination of spots and stripes across their coats.

Like genets, African civets are also viverrids, though not arboreal. They are usually observed on the ground, and look somewhat like giant genets, also sporting a striped and spotted pattern. Civets are, however, significantly larger – shoulder height average of 40cm (16 in) – and are rather stocky animals. They are best known for the sharp scent produced by their perineal glands, which was commonly used in perfumes before the creation of synthetic musk.

Though common throughout much of Africa, aardvarks are very, very rarely spotted on safari, and you will find the excitement particularly tangible. These bizarre-looking pig-like creatures typically withdraw from their burrows at sunset to gorge on ants and termites. Normally encountered as solitary individuals, they pair up during the breeding season and only mothers and their young will share burrows.

Aardwolves fall under the same family as the hyena and under the class carnivora. However, aardwolves rarely eat meat and live almost entirely on insects – mainly termites – and emerge from their burrows at night to forage. They are slightly larger than civets, with distinct manes running down their backsides, and fluffy tails. Yellowish and grey in color, they typically have several stripes along their backs and bands around their legs.

And finally, there’s the bush baby. Both thick-tailed and lesser bush baby occur in South Africa and are frequently spotted in trees. Also known as greater and lesser galago respectively, these adorable large-eyed, large-eared primates are delightful to behold. The Afrikaans name for ‘bush baby’ is ‘nagapie’, which translates to ‘little night monkey’, which is a testament to their extraordinary jumping abilities – and, of course, their undeniable cuteness.

Top Tips for Enjoying a Night Safari in Africa

After dark, the African bush becomes a place of sharpened senses, where predators roam and the darkness reverberates with strange calls and unexplained rustlings. The animals that wake with the moon are different to those seen during the day, and most of them are players in a fight for survival that lasts until morning. Night safaris offer a unique opportunity to explore this alternative world, and to experience firsthand the untamed drama of life after sundown. In this article, we take a look at a few top tips for getting the most out of your night drive experience. 

Spotting Wildlife

By definition, spotting wildlife at night is a completely different ball game to looking for animals during the day. After dark, colors fade into a myriad shades of gray and your vision reaches only as far as the beam of your flashlight. Night drive vehicles are equipped with spotlights, which the guide uses to scan the bush and illuminate passing animals. Sometimes, guides will allow you to bring your own flashlight. Ask for permission in advance, and opt for a spotlight with a strong, focused beam. Even if you can’t bring your own light, you can help the guide in his search. Follow the torchlight carefully, making sure to scan upwards into the trees as well. 

Find out about the area’s nocturnal animals before the night drive so that you know where to look, and how to identify animals when you see them. Keep an eye out for eyes shining in the torchlight, and for irregular or moving shadows. Don’t expect to witness a lion kill or to spot a leopard on the prowl on your first outing. Often, night safaris are about smaller species that are rarely seen during the day, including hares, porcupines, bushbabies, genets and small felines . For birders , night safaris offer the opportunity to add nocturnal species to your life list. In particular, keep an eye out for owls, nightjars, night herons, and thick-knees. 

What to Bring

Staying comfortable is key to enjoying your night drive experience. Make sure to douse yourself liberally with insect repellent before departure, as mosquitoes are often most active at dusk. This is especially important if you’re staying in an area afflicted by mosquito-borne diseases like malaria or yellow fever . Dressing warmly is important, and a warm hat, gloves, and even blankets all come in handy on a night safari. Don’t be fooled by hot daytime temperatures or by the fact that most night safaris start before dusk. Once the sun sets, most destinations get cool rapidly. A flask of coffee serves the dual purpose of keeping you warm and counteracting the drowsy effect of driving at night. Don’t forget to pack your binoculars, and your camera if you have one. 

Taking Photos at Night

Taking photos at night is tricky, and in some cases, impossible. However, while the lack of natural light undoubtedly impedes your ability to achieve good shots , there are a few tricks that might make the task easier. A flash (whether it’s inbuilt or external) provides an obvious solution to the light problem, but in most cases, using flash disturbs nocturnal animals and is not allowed. Instead, use your camera’s settings to capitalize on the light available to you, whether it’s the torchlight, the light of the full moon, or the last touches of sunlight before full dark. If you’re using a compact camera, make sure to select the inbuilt ‘night’ setting. You’ll need to hold the camera as still as possible to avoid blurry photos when you’re shooting without a flash. 

Tripods, monopods, and beanbags all help to reduce camera shake, but are only effective when the vehicle is at a standstill. If you’re shooting with a DSLR, set your camera to manual mode. Set the f-stop to the lowest number possible, in order to increase aperture size and allow more light to reach the camera sensor. Longer shutter speeds also allow for more light; however, the longer your exposure is, the more blurry moving subjects will be. Often, the best option when shooting at night is to hike up your ISO . The higher your ISO is, the grainier your photos will be; but this is your best chance of achieving enough light to capture your night drive experiences on camera. If an animal comes close to the vehicle, use the illumination from the guide’s beam to light your shot. 

Rules and Regulations

In order to keep you safe and to limit the disturbance to nocturnal wildlife, night drives throughout Africa are usually led by professional guides. Very few places, if any, allow you to self-drive at night. This means that very young children may not be able to take part, since most guided game drives have a minimum age requirement of at least 6 years old. Some national parks (especially in Kenya and Tanzania ) have banned night drives altogether because of the difficulty of monitoring which vehicles are legitimate and which belong to poachers operating under the cover of darkness. If you would like to experience an after-dark safari in these countries, make sure to spend at least one night in a private game reserve or conservancy .

Night drives offer a completely different perspective to daytime safaris, and for many of us, they represent the ultimate African adventure. As always sightings can’t be guaranteed, but if you treat the experience as an opportunity to immerse yourself in the wild world of the bush after dark, any animals that you spot are simply an added bonus.

11 Nocturnal Animals To Look Out For On Night Safari In Africa:

There are several species of bushbaby found across Africa, and all of them are nocturnal. Petite and agile, these adorable primates are perfectly adapted to life under pitch-black skies, with large ears and oversized eyes that glow bright red against the blackness of the night.

The name bushbaby comes from their eerie call, which sounds like the cry of a baby ringing out through the bush.

Feeding primarily on insects and fruit, bushbabies often become habituated around humans, and can readily be spotted scavenging at bush lodges or campsites.

Their long, bushy tails help balance them as they move through the trees, and provide power when jumping from one branch to another. Bushbabies can jump more than 2 metres (7 ft).

Honeybadger

One of the only animals on this list that is not strictly nocturnal, the African Honeybadger can, in some areas, be seen active during the daytime.

They are solitary animals, living in self-dug holes and feeding on a varied diet made up of honey, birds, rodents and snakes.

They have a long, stocky body with a small, flat head. Their fur is course and jet black, with the exception of a broad white stripe that runs from the top of their head to the base of their tail.

Honeybadgers are known as oneof the most fearless animals in Africa and will readily attack whole prides of lion, leopards and venomous snakes . They are well equipped to do so with incredible strength and ferocity matched by no other species, as well as sharp teeth and extra thick skin around their necks.

If you’re planning a nighttime safari in the Sahara Desert, you’ll have the chance to see the fennec fox. Found across North Africa and in parts of the Middle East, its name was derived from the Berber word ‘fanak’ which means fox.

Fennec foxes are the smallest member of the canid family, growing to an average 20 centimetres in height. Their most distinguishable feature is their enormous ears, which allow them to hear potential prey as it moves underground.

They are extremely well-adapted to life in the harsh desert climate, with fur-covered soles that protect it from the scorching hot sand and a cream-coloured coat that deflects the sun. Their large ears also help to dissipate body heat when temperatures soar.

Fennec Foxes mate for life, and live in close family units, in underground dens. They primarily feed on insects, reptiles and small mammals.

One of the most endangered mammals in Africa , a pangolin sighting is always greatly treasured while out on safari. There are four species of African pangolin, with the ground pangolin being the only one found in Southern and East Africa.

Pangolin body parts are highly sought-after in Far Eastern countries like China and Vietnam, as a result they have become the most trafficked animal in the world. Often mistaken for reptiles, pangolins are covered in thick protective scales, and role into a tight ball when threatened.

Also known as the Cape or Temminck’s pangolin, the ground pangolin is brown or olive in color, and can reach up to 1 metre in length. They lead solitary lives and are specially adapted to dig for termites.

They are found in several Central, Southern, and East African countries including South Africa , Botswana , Zambia and Tanzania .

One of the stranger looking nocturnal animals in Africa, the aardvark almost appears as if it was created using spare parts from other animals.

Often mistaken for an anteater, the aardvark is greyish brown in colour with a humped body, a long snout and a thick tail. They can grow to a total length of nearly 2 metres.

Found throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, Aardvarks spend the daytime hours sheltering from the sun in deep burrows. As night falls, they emerge and are straight on the hunt. They are expert diggers and detect their primary food source, termites, using both smell and hearing. Their powerful claws are used to dig into termite mounds, before the insects are lapped up with swift flicks of the aardvark’s long, sticky tongue. It is estimated that an aardvark can consume as many as 50,000 termites in a single night.

Cape Porcupine

Growing to a length of around 1 metre from snout to tail, the Cape Porcupine is the largest porcupine species in the world and the largest rodent in Southern Africa .

Their large, thick bodies are covered with black and white banded protective spines, the shortest of which are the sharpest.

The tail spines, or quills, are hollow and when threatened the porcupine rattles these as a warning to would-be predators. If the threatening sound isn’t enough to deter predators then a mouthful of sharp quills usually is. Both lions and leopards have been documented with permanent injuries caused by porcupines.

Found throughout central and southern Africa, porcupines are herbivores that primarily feed on fruit, roots and bark under the cover of darkness. They mate for life and dig an intricate series of burrows across a shared territory that can measure in excess of 150 square metres.

Small-Spotted Genet

The most common member of a family that could include up to 17 different species, the small-spotted genet is cat-like in appearance despite baring no relation to felines. Instead they classified as viverrids, a family they share with civets.

Small-spotted genets boast a slender body, pointed face and are pale, grey in colour with a black stripe down the length of their spine with several rows of small black spots. Their tails are striped with rings of black and white.

Genets are very adept hunters and skilled climbers, and are most active just after sunset and just before sunrise. Their diet is primarily made up of reptiles, birds and small mammals.

Small-spotted genets are found throughout Southern Africa, and in scattered regions across the rest of the continent.

Bat-Eared Fox

The bat-eared fox gets its name from their disproportionately large ears, which almost resemble a bat’s wings in full flights. These large ears allow the species to thrive in the extreme heat of the arid savannahs in which they live, as they help distribute heat around the body.

The African continent is home to 2 separate populations of bat-eared fox, one which occurs from Ethiopia to Tanzania and another that occurs from Angola to South Africa .

The southern population is only nocturnal during the summer months, when it uses the cover of night as a means of escaping the scorching daytime heat. In winter they are much easier to spot as they spend their days foraging.

They feed predominantly on termites, other insects, and small reptiles, and are often seen hunting in pairs or small groups.

South African Springhare

One of the most common nocturnal animals spotted on a nighttime safari in Africa , the South African springhare is a peculiar looking animal that strongly resembles a miniature kangaroo.

Despite their long tails, short front legs and extended hind legs, they aren’t related to kangaroos at all. And despite their name, they aren’t related to hares either. Instead they care classified as rodents.

Springhares are a yellow or reddish brown color, with a distinctive black tip on their bushy tails. They forage on grasses, seeds, and leaves and are most often seen sitting upright, transfixed in the beam of a safari vehicle’s headlights. Their powerful hind legs can propel them distances of more than 2 metres and their large eyes are well-adapted to darkness.

African Civet

The African civet is widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, but is very rarely seen. This is because it spends its days sleeping deep in the bush, only surfacing at night to hunt.

Civets are a solitary species, that stand around 40 centimetres at the shoulder. They are stocky mammals, with large hindquarters and a bushy tail. The maze of black spots and stripes that detail the civet’s grey coat are as unique as a human’s fingerprints – while the black band across its face gives it an almost racoon like appearance.

Civets are omnivorous and will eat everything from eggs to carrion and share another racoon-like trait. They mark their territory with a pungent liquid secreted from their perineal glands, which was historically harvested to make perfume .

With its name directly translating to ‘earth wolf’ in Afrikaans ( a southern African language , originating from Dutch), its not hard to notice the aardwolf’s wolf-like appearance.

However the aardwolf is not related to wolves or any other canine species, but instead belongs to the same family as the hyena.

Aardwolves are not easy to spot, but once they are, they are very easy to identify – with black stripes running vertically over its yellow fur and a thick mane that’s raised when threatened by predator or foe. As a secondary defence mechanism, their anal glands are also capable of excreting a foul-smelling liquid in hopes of deterring any would-be predators.

Aardwolves spend their days in underground burrows and emerge at night to prey almost exclusively on termites. They favor dry, open grassland and savannahs where termite nests are plentiful, and form lifelong mating pairs.

Night time safari drives: 5 reasons to embark on a twilight journey

Twilight is one of the best times to observe and track animals of the night. Many of them are nocturnal , meaning it would be impossible to see them any other time of the day. Picture twinkling eyes gazing at you from afar. Or the sight of a creeping leopard making its way through the grasslands.

Night drives offer you the chance to see the bush for what it really is. The reality of predators stalking their prey. As well as nocturnal primates, like bush babies, hiding in the tall trees, and feasting on insects who wake up at night.

With an experienced guide, a night safari can be as thrilling as early morning or afternoon drives. Let’s take a look at what makes these ventures so special .

Key Reasons for Going on a Night Drive in Africa

As the night starts to darken, the excitement begins to kick in . Your guide will take you through scenic routes to prepare you for the action of the night.

Seeing a kill is not always a guarantee, as this is an extremely rare occurrence for humans to encounter. However, here are some things you can always expect with a night drive.

1. The atmosphere of an African safari game drive

There’s something spectacular about a safari at night; something that you can only understand once you’ve experienced it for yourself. Whether that be the excitement of the darkness , the twinkling eyes in the distance, or the slight breeze and cool African air. Perhaps it’s the unfamiliar noises and sounds of the wild .

At night, it feels as though the roles are reversed . During the day we may feel like the observers, fascinated by nature. Yet, come night time and the animals have the upper hand of spying upon us and their prey.

2. Night time game viewing of weird-looking animals

A night drive in the African bush provides the opportunity for unusual and unique animals to come out and play. Along with their weird and wonderful looking faces, their names can be quite extraordinary, too. Like the aardvark with the nickname “earth pig”.

During the night, you have the chance to see the shining eyes of the beloved bush baby . Or the lonesome porcupine that proves to be a rare sighting during the day.

As well as small mammals, you may see your fair share of larger beasts . These include the whimsical spotted hyena and the mysterious leopard .

Perhaps you’re a bird lover who doesn’t want to miss out on morning viewings, and so aren’t keen on staying up for a night drive. However, even bird enthusiasts will find the night to be thrilling .

You can spot various species of nightjars after dark. These birds usually enjoy the warmth of dirt roads and camouflage well, so it’s important to take extra caution not to drive over them.

Ever slept in a tent surrounded by wild creatures? It’s something you’ll want to try. Often, you’ll hear the footsteps of wandering warthogs and the distant cackle of a hyena . Perhaps even the ominous sounds of trees crashing from the trunk of a lonesome bull elephant.

Some more sounds you can expect to hear in the darkness of Africa:

• The eerie sound of a nightjar
• The sound of a reed frog during sundown
• Dried grasses crushing under the foot of an elephant
• The enthralling sound of the pearl-spotted owlet

5. The safari lights brightening up the grasslands

Night drives are only possible with one essential item: a spotlight . Typically speaking, a tracker flashes the light left and right from the front of the 4×4. By scanning the area with a torch, it’s easier to catch glimpses of the animal’s eyes, to help identify where they are.

Remember not to shine directly into the eyes of animals (especially non-nocturnal ones), as this may blind them. And in some cases, they are more than 6 times more sensitive to light than we are.

Another thing to note is the use of a flash camera . Nighttime drives are a good chance to put down the technology and be alone with nature. But this isn’t to say that a good camera is not needed.

Unfortunately, it’s only high-quality cameras that can catch these night-time creatures in action. Take caution when using the camera’s flash, as, much like a flashlight, it can scare the animals. And in some cases, cause damage to their eyes .

12 nocturnal animals (and where to find them)

As the sun dips below the horizon and most safari guests start to think longingly of the five-course dinner awaiting them at the lodge, the nocturnal animals of the African night begin to stir. Noses twitch, pupils dilate, and limbs stretch out in preparation for the long, dark hours ahead.

They may be challenging to find, but Africa’s nocturnal animals are all the more rewarding for their rarity. Feast your eyes on our list of favourite lucifugous beasties and some advice on where to start the search.

For an animal that looks somewhat like an anxious walking artichoke, the pangolin must be one of the most charming little characters roaming the continent. These inoffensive eccentrics are covered in a layer of keratin scales and sport powerful claws and a long sticky tongue for lapping up termites and ants.

Where to start? During the winter months in the arid areas of southern Africa, ground pangolins often emerge before dusk to begin their myrmecophagous hunt. Guests at Tswalu Kalahari Reserve in South Africa tend to have excellent pangolin luck.

Honey badger

Few things in life genuinely live up to their reputation, but the honey badger certainly does. Known for their tenacity and toughness, they pack a punch that belies their small size when threatened but are otherwise largely content to simply go about their business.

Where to start? Honey badgers are predominantly nocturnal animals but are often active during the cooler winter days. Though they thrive in many habitats, arid regions like the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana offer a good chance to spot one due to the sparse vegetation (and their bolshie tendency to visit the campsites). Bush babies (or galagos as they are more formally known) are a group of nocturnal primates found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The continent’s myriad species come in many shapes and sizes, some utterly adorable. This is especially true of the tiny lesser Galagos , with their enormous bat-like ears and wide, surprised eyes.

Where to start? Almost anywhere on safari! Grab a spotlight or a flashlight and keep an eye out for quick reflection of their eye-shine as they leap from tree to tree. But be ready – these nocturnal animals can move fast! To browse our best African safaris on offer, click here .

The unique aardvark , with its ginormous rabbit ears and pig-like snout, is one of Africa’s weirdest and more wonderful offerings. Aardvarks have poor eyesight and can be hyper-focused on their termite prey while foraging. As a result, a careful and considered approach may be rewarded with a lengthy and very special sighting.

Where to start? Aardvarks are generally shy animals, but, like many of the nocturnal animals on this list, cold winter temperatures usually force them to search for food before dusk. The Karoo region in South Africa is home to (relatively) high densities of aardvark.

With needle-sharp teeth and a ferocious pounce, the lithe genets of Africa spend their evenings terrorising the tiny mammals, birds, and reptiles of the forests, savannas, and grasslands. These little predators are the epitome of grace and agility, seemingly flowing over obstacles, up trees and through the undergrowth.

Where to start? Genets are found throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa, though extended sightings are rare outside of a lodge context (where they have learned to associate people with food). The African civet , with its masquerade facial markings, makes many people think of a raccoon, though the two species are unrelated. They are widely distributed throughout Africa’s savannah and forest habitats, but the civet’s nocturnal and elusive habits make encountering one in the wild a rare treat.

Where to start? Civets are creatures of habit, generally walking the same well-trodden paths night after night. There are several lodges in the Greater Kruger with “resident” civets that pass through during the hours of darkness. To plan your Greater Kruger safari, click here .

Cape porcupine

These prickly customers are the largest rodents in Africa – stocky, robust animals with short limbs and a protective quiver of barbed quills. Porcupines are decidedly family-oriented despite their somewhat antisocial appearance. It is not uncommon to encounter a family unit consisting of a monogamous male and female and their latest porcupette foraging together.

Where to start? Cape porcupines are widely distributed throughout most of sub-Saharan Africa, and the chances of encountering one on a night drive are roughly the same in many of the more popular safari destinations. Arid areas like the Kalahari and Namibia may offer the best opportunity to spot one because the vegetation cover is less dense.

Of the 12 fascinating animals on this list, Madagascar’s aye-aye is perhaps the most fantastical and outlandish. The world’s largest nocturnal primate is technically a lemur but sports several unusual anatomical adaptations that set it apart, including constantly growing incisors and a sixth digit (a “pseudo thumb”) on the front paws. The long, thin third finger is used woodpecker-like to tap on bark to locate insects and then fish the grubs out of their hiding places.

Where to start? The dense forests of Nosy Mangabe off the coast of eastern Madagascar offer some of the most reliable sightings of these endangered lemurs. They were introduced to the island during the 1960s as a conservation initiative and have flourished ever since.

The bouncy springhare is Africa’s answer to the kangaroo, albeit in miniature form. At night, these spring-loaded rodents emerge from their underground burrows to forage, using their long tails to balance as they hop around searching for juicy roots and stems.

Where to start? Springhares thrive in the semi-arid regions of southern Africa, so a night drive in Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa or the Tuli Block in Botswana may well reveal a glimpse of a lively springhare (or ten). The shy and elusive aardwolf is perhaps one of the continent’s most underappreciated animals. These unique animals belong to the hyena family but are entirely myrmecophagous (they only eat termites and ants). They are also probably the most winsome of all the hyena species, with dramatically striped coats, delicate facial features, and oversized ears.

Where to start? There are two distinct populations of aardwolf in Africa, one in southern Africa and the other in East Africa. The best chance of finding one in southern Africa would be through exploring the vast Kalahari Basin, perhaps in Kgalagadi National Park in South Africa or Botswana’s salt pans. It seems astonishing that such a large animal might so easily evade visitors, yet few safari-goers ever glimpse the stocky, shaggy bushpig in the wild. Though often described as “dangerous” and “aggressive”, these porcine omnivores are wary and circumspect and generally avoid humans (unlike their brash and fearless cousins, the warthog).

Where to start? Bushpigs are adaptable animals found across a wide range of habitats. However, there are few areas where they are sufficiently habituated to people to make for reliable sightings. Some campsites in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park are known for their nightly visits from marauding bushpigs, though they should be treated with absolute respect and given plenty of space.

Bat-eared fox

As the name implies, bat-eared foxes are defined by their enormous ears, reaching almost a third of their total body length. They are the only insectivorous canid species in the world, with a unique dental arrangement designed to suit their unusual diets. They generally forage in small families and are endlessly entertaining, with oddly sardonic expressions beneath their ridiculously oversized ears.

Where to start? Visitors to Marakele National Park in the heart of South Africa’s Waterberg Mountains and Nossob Camp in the Kgalagadi National Park regularly enjoy delightful bat-eared fox sightings. Safari by Starlight: A Night Safari in the African Bush

A shiver races down your spine as the tell-tale cackle of a hyena pierces the night. Your heart starts pounding as, with a flick of the wrist, the safari vehicle roars to life beneath you. Tension fills the air as the deafening roar of a lion signals that the hunt is on... And the hyenas aren't the only ones out on the prowl tonight. Under the cloak of darkness, lions begin to stir as leopards abandon their trees for more solid ground and the prey that inhabits it. Contrary to popular belief, a night safari does not equal a nightmare. In theatre terms, when the night sky blankets the African landscape, a full set change is happening with a whole new cast of characters set to make an appearance.

As the sun sets and the temperature drops, lions and the more elusive predators like leopards and hyenas become more active as they prepare for a hunt or patrol their territories for possible invaders. 

A night safari also offers the chance to spot the rare "Shy 5," namely the meerkat, aardvark, porcupine, aardwolf and bat-eared fox. In other words, a safari lit by the glow of the moon adds a completely new dimension to game viewing.

East Africa vs Southern Africa, that's the question...?

Exploring East Africa

For the intrepid travellers among you,  East Africa  is a great choice for a thrilling night safari.  Tanzania's  wild and untamed landscape provides an amazing backdrop for a moonlit safari adventure. On the other hand, being amongst  Kenya's  vast and beautiful landscape will remind you exactly why it was chosen as the location for "The Lion King".

Captivating Kenya

In Kenya, you have several options when it comes to a night safari. While the  Maasai Mara National Reserve  does not allow for night safaris, the private concessions here do. Therefore, you should look at going to the Olare Motorogi and Naboisho Conservancies bordering the Massai Mara. 

In Kenya, sightings of lions, elephants, buffalo and hyenas are abundant. And  Mahali Mzuri , as well as  Naboisho Camp , are excellent options for the chance to witness the classic struggle of predator versus prey.

Take on Tanzania

Tanzania's untamed landscape is a great option to see various African animals in action under the cover of darkness. With luck and a great guide on your side, you could be treated to black rhinos, leopards, lions, crocodiles, giraffes and hippos as they go about their nightly expeditions. 

Oliver's Camp  in  Tarangire National Park  and Lake Manyara Lodge in the  Serengeti National Park  are both great options for thrilling night safaris.

When it comes to night safaris in  Southern Africa , the sky, or in this case, the night sky, is the limit. Countries in Southern Africa are teeming with various habitats and wildlife, setting an excellent stage for a night safari.

A night safari in  Botswana  offers many unexpected twists and turns, from the more sought-after sightings like lions and hyenas to their more seldom-seen castmates. 

Sightings of bushbabies, spring hares, servals, and genets are more common here, with the chance to spy the ever-elusive leopard, pangolin or even an aardwolf or two as they go about their nightly routines.

Each Bidder’s decision to bid and determination of their bid amount should be based upon their own examination of the item(s) in question. In any purchase or sale, the estimated value of the item(s) is reflected by the price. The bidder hereby assumes all risks of valuation concerning any and all purchases.

We reserve the right to withdraw any lot before, during and after the sale and shall have no liability whatsoever for such a withdrawal.

All items are sold AS IS, WHERE IS with all faults without any representations or warranties by us or the Seller as to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, the correctness of the e-catalogue or other description of the physical condition, size, quality, rarity, important, medium, frame, provenance, exhibitions, literature, or historical relevance. No statement anywhere, whether oral or written, whether made in on Charitybuzz.com, an advertisement, a lot receipt, or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a warranty, representation or assumption of liability. We and the Seller make no representations and warranties, express or implied, as to whether the purchaser acquires any copyrights, including but not limited to, any reproduction rights in any property.

We and the Seller are not responsible for errors and omissions on Charitybuzz.com, glossary, or any supplemental material. Charitybuzz will not be responsible or liable for damage to frames and glass coverings, regardless of the cause. ALL SALES ARE FINAL.

A. Entering Bids

To bid, find a lot page, enter a value in the bid box, and click “Bid.” If you click “Bid” on a lot, you will be prompted to either log in to your Charitybuzz account, or create a new one if you do not have one already.

Once you’ve created an account you will be presented with the lot details, conditions of sale, and standard shipping and redemption details. Once you have accepted the Conditions of Sale, you may proceed with placing a bid on that lot. All bids placed for any lot are governed by the Conditions of Sale for that lot.

You may bid at or above the starting bid displayed as the “Current Price” in a lot page’s bid box. The current leading bid, along with a list of a lot’s full bidding history, will be visible to other users. If the status of your bid changes, you will receive notifications via email and push (if you have the Charitybuzz App installed).

B. Cancellation Rights

As soon you place and confirm your bid amount, your bid is submitted. You accept and agree that bids submitted by you are final. Charitybuzz is not responsible or liable for any problems, delays, or other issues resulting from the use of the Internet, including but not limited to transmission, execution, or processing of Bids.

Charitybuzz nor the Seller is responsible for any errors in bidding. A bidder should make certain to bid on the correct lot. The Bidder should make sure the bid price they enter (including any taxes or fees) is the price they are willing and able to pay. Once the hammer has fallen and Charitybuzz has announced the winning Bidder, that Bidder is unconditionally bound to pay for that lot, even if the Bidder has made an error.

A bid(s) entered by mistake on the part of a bidder is NOT grounds for cancellation of that bid. Each bidder is responsible for his or her own account and bids. In addition, allowing access to another who enters a bid without your knowledge is NOT grounds for cancellation of a bid.

C. Fraudulent Bidding

All Bidders must meet Charitybuzz’s qualifications to bid. Any Bidder who is not a client in good standing of Charitybuzz may be disqualified at Charitybuzz’s sole discretion and will not be awarded lots. Such determination may be made by Charitybuzz in its sole discretion, at any time prior to, during, or even after the close of the Auction. Charitybuzz reserves the right to exclude any person from the auction.

Bids will not be accepted from minor persons under eighteen (18) years of age without a parent’s written consent containing an acknowledgement of the conditions herein and indicating their agreement to be bound thereby on behalf of the bidder.

If an entity places a bid, then the person executing the bid on behalf of the entity agrees to personally guarantee payment for any successful bid.

Any bidder that represents a purchaser is personally and individually responsible for any obligations of the purchaser set forth in these terms and conditions. All purchasers purchasing pursuant to a valid resale license will need to provide appropriate documentation for removal of state sales tax.

D. Winning & Disputes

The successful bidder is the highest bidder acknowledged by Charitybuzz. In the event of any dispute between bidders, or in the event of doubt on Charitybuzz’s part as to the validity of any bid, Charitybuzz will have final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to re-offer and resell the lot in question. If any dispute arises after the sale, Charitybuzz’s sale record is conclusive. While Charitybuzz makes every effort to guarantee accuracy, in the event of an error, and a lot is accidentally declared sold by mistake, Charitybuzz reserves the right to cancel the sale and relist the lot in its sole discretion.

By accepting the Conditions of Sale, Bidder personally and unconditionally guarantees payment.

Title to any lot remains with the Seller, any secured party of the Seller, or assignee of Seller, as the case may be, until the lot is paid for in full by the Bidder. Charitybuzz reserves the right to require payment in full before delivering any lot to the successful bidder.

A maximum bid is a secret amount you enter, that represents the maximum amount you are willing to bid. It is higher than the current price and also higher than the next allowable minimum bid amount. If you enter a maximum bid, we’ll bid on your behalf up to that maximum bid amount in response to other bids, according to Charitybuzz’s bidding tiers.

The value and status of your maximum bid will be visible only to you, unless it is the leading bid.

Charitybuzz strongly encourages the use of Max Bids to increase your chances of winning.

When an auction reaches the final 10 minutes before it closes, any bids received in that final 10 minutes push out the previous close time by an additional 10 minutes. This recurring 10 minute extension is known as “Extended Bidding,” and is signified by a banner above the auction timer on the lot page.

This dynamically extending period is designed to protect against a practice commonly known as “sniping” or “last second bidding” where bidders attempt to enter a quick bid in the final seconds of an auction to secure a win before competing bidders have a chance to counter.

Live bids lots are a special type of auction lot on Charitybuzz. Live bid lots on Charitybuzz are paired with a real world, physical auction, where that real world auction is often scheduled to occur at a later date. You can distinguish Live Bid lots by the “Live Bid” label in the title of the lot, and additional description text at the start of the lots “Overview” tab.

In a Live Bid lot on Charitybuzz, a lot is created that is similar to any other auction lot on the site. These special lots last for similar amounts of time and bidding occurs normally by our users.

Things start to differ after a Charitybuzz Live Bid lot closes. After it closes and the winning bidder is chosen, that winning bidder’s bid amount or (if it exists) the max bid amount associated with that winning bid, are taken and entered into the associated real world auction. For example, if a bidder on Charitybuzz wins at $12,000 with an unrealized max bid of $15,000, then that $15,000 dollar amount is passed on into the real world auction.

Before the winning bidders bid or max bid amount is passed on, someone from Charitybuzz contacts that winner after the Charitybuzz lot closes and before the real world auction opens. This is to confirm if the bidder would like to increase their bid or max bid amount before it’s entered into the real world auction.

What happens during the real world auction? Each individual one may vary. Charitybuzz does not own or operate any real world auctions, nor does Charitybuzz require any partners to follow a specific auction model. We make no claims to the consistency of real world auction experiences and encourage bidders to contact us for more details as needed.

In our experience, real world auctions tied to Charitybuzz Live Bid lots are typically executed by our partners in a few common ways.

In one scenario, if an auction house and an auctioneer is present, winning live bids from Charitybuzz Live Bid lots are treated as “absentee” bids. This normally means that the Charitybuzz winning bid is placed in the auctioneers books as a bid. As the auctioneer conducts the auction, they will bring up and enter the Charitybuzz winning bid during the course of the auction as the current price or next minimum bid value approaches the Charitybuzz winner’s bid amount. In this scenario, other people in the real world room are expected to bid against the auctioneer, not the Charitybuzz winning bidder. If no one is bidding in the room, the auctioneer will typically keep bidding up the price until the Charitybuzz Live Bid winner wins the real world auction.

In other models, an audience member (including, but not limited to a charity partner employee) might act as a proxy for the winning Charitybuzz bidder. They will usually bid on behalf of the winning Charitybuzz Live Bid winner during the normal course of that auction, using whatever means provided for that auction house (i.e. paddles, etc.)

After the auction is completed, someone from Charitybuzz contacts our bidder to let them know the outcome. If that Charitybuzz Live Bid bidder has won, payment occurs as usual. If that Charitybuzz Live Bid bidder did not win, they will be notified accordingly.

A reserve bid is a bid placed by Charitybuzz on behalf of the seller up to the minimum reserve (if applicable). Bids placed by Charitybuzz on behalf of the seller up to the amount of the reserve, will be counted toward the total bid count displayed on the lot page’s bid box.

Refunds are rewarded on a case-by-case basis and at the sole discretion of Charitybuzz, LLC. Refunds shall only be considered in instances where (i) the seller has failed to deliver the elements contemplated under the lot details/description within the timelines outlined in the lot details OR within 30 days of purchase, whichever is later, and (ii) where the seller/redemption contact are not showing good faith efforts to support the redemption or delivery of the purchase. No refunds shall be granted due to (i) buyer's remorse, or (ii) the bidder/buyer's lack of familiarity with Charitybuzz fees, including Buyer's Premium, or (iii) any request for reimbursement based on perceived value or emotional satisfaction where the lot was delivered by the seller in accordance with the lot details, or (iv) the bidder/buyer’s failure to diligently attempt to schedule an Experience in good faith, or (v) loss or delay of item delivery resulting from bidder/buyer’s failure to provide timely/accurate shipping information.

Experiences auctioned on Charitybuzz.com go through a specific redemption process to coordinate details and complete. That process normally involves messaging and scheduling between all parties (i.e. winners, charities, sellers, venues). Details discussed include but are not limited to experience dates, arrival procedures, airfare, hotel accommodations, restrictions, will-call requirements, and any other on-site notes. Scheduling requires an initial request sent by the customer, and a followup confirmation submitted by relevant redemption contacts.

By using Charitybuzz to bid and win lots, bidders agree to use the Redemption Center exclusively (where enabled) to message and schedule all experiences – doing so is a requirement of redeeming experiences through Charitybuzz. In addition, bidders agree that they are bound by all site terms of use and auction conditions of sale.

The minimum processing and handling charge for this item is $9.95.

Getting your item - Items will either be shipped directly from Charitybuzz or from the item seller (Third Party) as indicated. Items shipping from Charitybuzz will be sent within five business days of payment settlement by the winning bidder. All third party items will be shipped within the times indicated on the lot page. Winning bidders should ensure the desired shipping address is provided to Charitybuzz within 24 hours after payment settlement. Charitybuzz will default to the shipping address listed on the winning bidder’s account unless otherwise notified. Please see FAQs for more information.

Items that require signature - Items with a sale price of $1,000 and above are typically shipped with signature required.

Tickets & Certificates - For hard copies of tickets and certificates, the minimum shipping, handling, and applicable insurance charge is $14.95. Tickets, certificates, and vouchers, unless otherwise specified, will be shipped via professional carrier with standard ground service. In some cases, tickets will be left at the venue's "Will Call" window under the winner's name. Merchandise is insured for the winning amount.

Merchandise - The minimum shipping charge for merchandise is $19.95. (Shipments outside the U.S. are subject to additional shipping and customs fees.) Merchandise, unless otherwise specified, will be shipped via professional carrier with standard ground service. Oversized items may require special delivery arrangements, which Charitybuzz will coordinate between the winning bidder and the selected freight carrier. All merchandise is insured for the winning amount.

Will Call Pickups - In some cases, tickets will be left at the venue’s “Will Call” window under the winner’s name. Winning bidders may be required to submit the names of attendees up to several weeks ahead of the event. A valid photo ID for each person listed at Will Call is often required. When available, Charitybuzz will attempt to provide an onsite point of contact, but makes no guarantee that this information will be available for any given lot. Will Call tickets are typically available at the Will Call window at least an hour before the event, unless otherwise specified. The Will Call window is usually located near the venue's main entrance.

After winning - Detailed redemption information will be emailed to the winning bidder. Redemption contact information will be emailed to the winning bidder within two business days of payment settlement by the winning bidder. The redemption contact will work with the winning bidder to fulfill the lot within the appearance times, time constraints, event dates or locations, and other particulars listed in the lot details.
