The best Africa cruises for 2025 and 2026

Melissa Klurman

Nothing quite says "bucket list" like a cruise to Africa.

You get wildlife safaris, ancient wonders of the world and some of the most fascinating cultural epicenters on the globe all in one trip. Are you starting to understand why a cruise here is so unique?

Africa is a big continent, and you'll find almost as many ways to cruise as marvels to see. Whether you want to visit Africa's tropical Seychelles islands in the Indian Ocean or prefer the dramatic red sands of Namibia on the Atlantic coast, you can do it on a cruise ship — even on the same itinerary.

And that's not all! You can book intimate river cruises on Botswana's Chobe River or Egypt's Nile River, a rite of passage for many a cruise fan. (We've highlighted Viking below for its vast number of sailings, but Lindblad/National Geographic, Uniworld and Avalon Waterways all offer Nile itineraries as well.)

Whether you're looking for an expedited South African highlights cruise or a multiweek African continent adventure, you can find a cruise itinerary to suit you. Here are our picks for the best Africa cruises in 2025 and 2026.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 11- to 13-night South Africa & Madagascar cruises

no fly cruise to africa

Norwegian Cruise Line has some of the most robust and varied Africa cruise options of all the big-ship lines, with 13 sailings ranging from 11 to 21 nights in 2025 alone.

Among the most popular offerings is the Cape Town to Mauritius (or reverse) route on Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Dawn. These 11- to 13-night cruises combine the highlights of Cape Town with the wildlife wonders of Madagascar. The latter is one of the most enthralling safari destinations in Africa; 90% of the plant and animal species on the island are endemic, including 103 varieties of lemurs. But Madagascar is also a destination that even hardcore safari enthusiasts often skip because flights and lodges are hard to book, making a cruise the perfect way to get there.

NCL's itineraries also visit Pointe de Galets, Reunion — a lush beach and rainforest area on the Indian Ocean. Norwegian Dawn's 12-night itinerary adds a stop in Maputo, Mozambique.

Who should go : The 1,944-passenger Norwegian Sky and 2,290-passenger Norwegian Dawn are some of the smallest and oldest ships in Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet. They suit cruisers looking for a more intimate experience than what you'll find on bigger ships. Africa cruises tend to draw cruisers who care more about the destinations they visit than onboard attractions, but the ships will still entertain you with multiple eateries and bars and lounges, several pools and whirlpools, a casino and a theater with nightly shows.

Azamara: 18-night Western Africa Voyage

no fly cruise to africa

Azamara offers an 18-night Western Africa Voyage sailing between the Canary Islands and Cape Town. The 704-passenger Azamara Quest calls on the ports of Dakar, Senegal; Banjul, Gambia; and Luderitz and Walvis Bay, Namibia, along the African coast. The ship also stops at the British-controlled island of St. Helena.

Book excursions to seek out the elusive wild horses of Namibia, take a sightseeing flight over the massive shifting sand dunes of Sossusvlei, race through the desert in a four-wheel-drive vehicle and explore the waterways and villages of Gambia.

Azamara also partners with Micato Safaris for pre- and post-cruise Africa programs to see the "Big Five" (Cape buffaloes, lions, rhinoceroses, elephants and leopards). You can book safaris in Chobe National Park in Botswana or Kruger National Park in South Africa.

Who should go : Azamara caters to affluent, well-traveled cruisers who enjoy smaller vessels, a country house ambience and itineraries that focus on destination immersion. (You won't find waterslides or roller coasters, and that's exactly how the line's fans like it.) Azamara creates an immersive African experience with its focus on longer stays in port; for example, the ship spends two full days in Walvis Bay, Namibia. Additionally, the line's complimentary AzAmazing Evenings program takes cruisers ashore to experience cultural performances in jaw-dropping locations, such as the "Desert Dinner & Fire spinners and Marimba Band" event in Namibia.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises: 16-night Shores of Madagascar: Cape Town to Port Louis cruises

no fly cruise to africa

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers a 16-night itinerary along the southern coast of South Africa and on to Mozambique and Madagascar, concluding in Port Louis, Mauritius. The 750-passenger Seven Seas Splendor departs Jan. 27, 2026, on this itinerary and then repeats the sailing in reverse, from Port Louis to Cape Town, on Feb. 12, 2026.

Along the way, Regent offers some unique shore excursions that set it apart from other lines. Highlights include safari game drives in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, from Richards Bay; cultural explorations of Durban, South Africa, with visits to Zulu villages in the Valley of a Thousand Hills; and birding in the remote Mayotte, French Comoros.

Who should go : Regent's all-inclusive luxury cruises — which include airfare, transfers, onboard beverages and dining, gratuities, Wi-Fi and unlimited shore excursions — have correspondingly luxurious prices. Passengers are mostly affluent professionals and retirees who enjoy the seamless ease of an all-inclusive sailing offering high-end service.

Fine dining fans will appreciate the multiple onboard dining options, including Chartreuse for fine French cuisine and Prime 7 with steakhouse menus. Other diversions on board include the sybaritic Serene Spa and a pool deck, plus boccie, a putting green and golf nets for sea day enrichment.

Oceania Cruises: 14-night Cape Town to Cape Town cruise

no fly cruise to africa

If you'd prefer a deeper exploration of southern Africa, Oceania Cruises' Cape Town to Cape Town cruise Jan. 19. to Feb. 2, 2026, explores South Africa's coast in an unusual up-and-back itinerary, first exploring the east coast up to Richards Bay, then heading to the island of Madagascar, then looping back to the mainland and stopping in Maputo, Mozambique, before returning back to Cape Town.

Highlights include Durban, with its golden beaches and enchanting Indian Market, and Port Elizabeth on the southern coast of South Africa, an area nicknamed the "Garden Route" for its verdant foliage. Port Elizabeth is also a popular migratory path for southern right whales that you might spot, along with schools of dolphins, as you sail.

Oceania offers longer Cape Town to Lisbon, Portugal, and Cape Town to Barcelona itineraries (as well as Lisbon and Barcelona to Cape Town sailings) of 25 and 26 nights, too. Ports include the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, the Ivory Coast and Ghana. Along the way, you'll stop at Walvis Bay on the western coast of Namibia, with its iconic red sand dunes; here, you'll have a chance to see flamingos, pelicans and thousands of other migratory birds.

Who should go : Oceania Cruises offers a high-end cruising experience with a residential feel similar to staying in an elegant estate. The intimate 670-passenger Nautica features a relatively uncrowded setting, with a higher crew-to-passenger ratio than you'll find on mass-market vessels. On board, guests delight in several high-end restaurants offering gourmet cuisine and elegant accommodations.

Viking: 11-night Pharaohs and Pyramids cruise

no fly cruise to africa

Not all Africa cruises are on the ocean. A trip down the Nile River is a tick on many a traveler's wish list, and Viking offers one of the easiest-to-book options with seven ships sailing its Pharaohs & Pyramids cruises . In 2025 and 2026, sailings depart nearly every day in the October to March high season, though no sailings are scheduled for the second half of June through the end of July.

The round-trip Cairo sailings feel incredibly exclusive, with ships carrying just 82 passengers on board. The itinerary begins with several days in Cairo, where guests can visit the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, museums and souks before sailing down the Nile. Your ship will linger multiple days in Luxor, Egypt, home of the Valley of the Kings; spend a day in Qena, Egypt, to see the Dendera Temple complex; and stop in the ports of Esna, Aswan, Kom Ombo and Edfu, Egypt.

Who should go : Adults-only cruise line Viking appeals to travelers who appreciate a relaxed onboard experience centered around learning about a destination via guest lectures — in this case, Egyptologists — and shore excursions. The cruise line's passengers tend to be retirement age or older.

Viking's fans love the ships' uncluttered Scandinavian-inspired decor and pricing that includes wine and beer with lunch and dinner, gratuities and one free shore excursion per port. The ships do not have an onboard casino or entertainment spaces beyond the main lounge area, but a shaded pool and sundeck offer a relaxing outdoor venue to watch the river scenery.

A South Africa cruise and safari is a beloved holiday option - along with its two great cities, South Africa is also famed for its safaris, being home to the ‘Big Five’ (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) and other amazing wildlife, including penguins and whales (it’s one of the few places in the world where it’s possible to whale-watch from coastal footpaths and restaurants) so do look into Africa cruise and stay getaways. Oenophiles have also come to the right place: there are four renowned wine regions in South Africa, including Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek and Wellington, where visitors can sip wine and sample the local cuisine. Why not search for cheap cruise deals South Africa if you're looking to not break the bank or research last minute cruises South Africa to escape to the sun.

Mozambique was once one of Africa’s most visited destinations until civil war rendered it impossible to visit. In recent years, it has come back on the map with travellers drawn to the country for its game reserves and pristine beaches. If you want to cruise East Africa, cruise ships stop in Maputo, Mozambique’s vibrant capital and centre of commerce.

Take an Indian ocean cruise and visit this island nation - a melting pot of different cultures (and cuisines), offering so much more than sun-kissed shores and golden-sand beaches (although it does have these in abundance). The island’s diverse landscape includes a mountainous interior, with rainforests, waterfalls and wildlife that make it a hiker’s paradise.

From the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to George and Amal Clooney, the Seychelles have become a popular destination for the rich and famous, who are drawn to the island nation for its white-sand beaches and exclusive luxury resorts. Another beloved Indian Ocean cruise destination, the Seychelles are home to beautiful coral reefs and nature reserves, as well as rare animals, such as the giant prehistoric-looking Aldabra tortoises.

This 10-strong cluster of islands in the mid-Atlantic may not be the most obvious winter sun destination, but Cape Verde cruises have so much to offer travellers. Along with year-round sun, it is steeped in colonial history, first inhabited by the Portuguese in 1456, has a breathtaking volcanic landscape and offers amazing watersports.

If you cruise East Africa you may well call at this island country in the Indian Ocean. Madagascar cruises typically stop in Nosy Be (which means ‘Big Island’ in Malagasy). The island is famous for its natural splendour and native Ylang Ylang trees. Nosy Be’s Lokobe Reserve is also home to lemurs, chameleons and frogs. Visitors can brave the highest peak on the island at Mont Lokobe or laze on the beaches of Befotaka Bay.

Namibia has one of the most diverse topographies in the world, ranging from dunescapes to mountainous wildernesses and vast flatlands. Cruises along Africa's west coast typically stop in Walvis Bay, famed for its rich marine wildlife, and the historic town of Lüderitz, which lies off Africa’s Skeleton Coast.

Zanzibar has emerged from its troubled past and is now a popular tourist destination for those cruising Africa. The beautiful archipelago lies just 26 miles off the coast of Tanzania and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, along with a rich history and culture. Highlights include a visit to Unesco World Heritage Site Stone Town, which features a charming mix of Arab, European, Indian, and Persian influences, and the many local spice plantations. Ponant offers several Indian Ocean itineraries that include Zanzibar, while the likes of Oceania and Silversea include the archipelago as part of their world voyages.

Iconic ports in Africa

Cape town, south africa.

South Africa cruises for Cape Town are an obvious choice for those cruising around Africa. The country's legislative capital has been ranked among the most beautiful cities in the world time and time again, and it’s not hard to understand why. Cruise lines including Azamara , Regent Seven Seas Cruises , MSC Cruises and Cunard offer cruises to and from Cape Town, so passengers get a chance to explore the port city. Hopefully, it will not be too windy on your visit to hike Table Mountain for unparalleled, breathtaking views. Nature lovers should pay a visit to the tranquil Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, which hosts open-air movie nights most weeks.

Durban, South Africa

While not as popular as Cape Town, Durban is still a great city to visit and invariably features on Africa cruise itineraries. The city’s Golden Mile beachfront, a four-mile stretch of golden sand beaches that extends from Blue Lagoon South to Addington Beach and Durban Harbor, is a popular spot for watersports enthusiasts. Those interested in marine life while on ocean cruises in South Africa should visit uShaka Marine World, the fifth-largest aquarium in the world, or Durban Botanical Gardens for living fossils.

Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Port Elizabeth is a city on the Algoa Bay in South Africa's eastern cape, which features more than 40km of unspoiled coastline. Outside of the metropolitan area, you will find wildlife reserves, home to elephants, rhinos and other big game - perfect for Africa cruises with safari.

Maputo, Mozambique

Settled by the Portuguese in the 1700s and with centuries of travel and trade from Africa, Asia and Europe , Mozambique’s bustling capital is a melting pot of different cultures. Maputo’s old town stretches northeast from the port and features colonial-style architecture and sidewalk cafés. Must-see monuments include City Hall, Maputo Railway Station, Independence Square and the Fort of Maputo.

Mombasa, Kenya

Mombasa, also known as the white and blue city, is Kenya’s oldest and second largest city and a port of call if you cruise east Africa. It may be clichéd, but it would be foolish to visit this exotic paradise without paying a visit to one of its many beaches, the best of which include Diani, Nyali and Bamburi. For culture, visit Unesco World Heritage Site Fort Jesus, an example of 16th-century Portuguese architecture. From here, take a stroll around the old town, where shops sell antiques, souvenirs, spices and fragrance oils.

Port Louis, Mauritius

Port Louis is the capital city of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. People typically visit Port Louis for its great shopping, but there are also several notable cultural attractions, including The Blue Penny Museum, home to the world’s first colonial stamp, and Signal Mountain, named after the antennae on top.

Port Victoria, Seychelles

Victoria on the island of Mahé, the largest island in the Seychelles archipelago situated in the Indian Ocean, is one of the world’s smallest capitals. It is also famous for its vanilla and coconut oil exports. On your Seychelles cruise stopover, you can enjoy street shopping at the Selwyn-Clarke Market or laze on the golden sands of Beau Vallon Beach.

Sandwiched between the choppy shores of the South Atlantic and sandy dunes of the Namib desert is where you’ll find the haunting town of Lüderitz. Sitting on one of the least hospitable coastlines in the world, Lüderitz make for a fascinating port call, rich in history, wildlife, architecture and scenery. Prominent landmarks include Felsenkirche (the ‘church on the rocks'), Goerke Haus, a grand Art Nouveau home cut into the cliffs of Diamond Hill, and Kolmanskop, a desolate town of crumbling mansions.

Walvis Bay, Namibia

Flamingos, pelicans and other birdlife flock to the 45,000-hectare lagoon situated southwest of the port town of Walvis Bay, which translated means ‘Whales Bay’. As you’d expect, these mesmerising marine mammals, along with dolphins and Cape fur seals, inhabit the Atlantic waters around the Pelican Point lighthouse. Activities range from cruises on catamarans to dune tours.

Pomene, Mozambique

The likes of MSC Cruises include Pomene Bay as one of the ports of call on their South Africa cruise itineraries. Considered one of the most picturesque places in Mozambique, the lagoon that shelters the bay is part of the Pomene Nature Reserve, a protected marine area. Shore excursions include a marine safari to spot dolphins and whales, a guided snorkelling tour of the sheltered rock reef and mangrove habitat of the estuary, and deep-sea fishing.

São Vicente, Cape Verde

One of the sun-kissed islands of Cape Verde, the archipelago of volcanic islands located in the Atlantic Ocean off the western coast of Africa, São Vicente has a rich tradition of music and art. The capital, Mindelo, features a vibrant nightlife, with pubs, restaurants and nightclubs keeping visitors and locals entertained until the small hours. During the day, you can head to Laginha Beach where you can soak up the sun, or visit one of the other beaches on the island for activities such as windsurfing.

Praia, Cape Verde

The capital of Cape Verde, Praia sits on the southern tip of Santiago. The city was a Portuguese territory until its independence in 1975 and this is reflected in its historic old town, referred to as the ‘Plateau’ by the locals. It features a neoclassical town hall and cathedral, but those who don’t fancy sightseeing can enjoy the many lovely beaches on the coast.

Casablanca, Morocco

While it may not be quite as romantic as it is depicted in the classic film starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, Casablanca is still a fascinating place to visit on a North Africa cruise - it's now a cosmopolitan city that still retains an old-world charm. There are several references to its French past, including the Art Deco Ville Nouvelle and Cinema Rialto. Built on a rocky outcrop, the Hassan II Mosque dominates the city skyline and is a must-visit, as is the Jewish Museum (the only one of its kind in the Islamic world).

Tangier, Morocco

The Morocco port on the Straits of Gibaltrar has been a gateway between Africa and Europe since the time of the pharaohs and a port of call on a North Africa cruise. A modern city with historic charm, Tangier has welcomed many glamorous and famous visitors over the years. An icon of Tangier, Café Hafa, which dates back to 1921, has had a roster of stars darken its doors, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Paul Bowles.

For the adventurous cruiser, Pointe des Galets on Reunion Island offers the chance to climb an active volcano. Piton de la Fournaise rises over 8,600 feet. Once you complete the challenging climb, you're rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. The viewpoint at Pas de Bellecombe is perched atop a 492-foot cliff.

Visit the Island of War

Mombasa is a vibrant port city with a tumultuous past, which is why it earned the nickname the Island of War. Here, you'll experience African, Indian, and Arab cultures in one place. Fort Jesus is one of Mombasa's notable sites. It was built by the Portuguese in 1593. In less than 200 years, the fort changed hands nine times. Be sure to try some local cuisine to experience the blend of cultures here.

Anse Patates Beach, La Digue, Seychelles

Relax on Seychelles' Beaches

The Seychelles are a beach-lover's dream, with stunning white sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and intriguing granite boulders. Here, you can lounge under the sun, snorkel in the vibrant coral reefs, or embark on an island-hopping adventure.

Unearth Ancient Egypt

On a Mediterranean and Middle East cruise, a stop in Safaga, Egypt, offers a chance to step back in time. Consider an overnight excursion to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, which brings you face-to-face with ancient Egyptian civilization's grandeur. This excursion includes an evening visit to see the light and sound show at the Karnak Temple.

Enjoy a scenic drive along Chapman’s Peak, just south of Cape Town, see the magnificent neo-classical City Hall in Mozambique and experience the rich cultural heritage of Port Elizabeth.

Cape Town is the capital of the Western Cape. Table Mountain is the spectacular backdrop to the city, and the summit can be reached by Cableway. Cape Town's Victoria and Albert Waterfront is a popular area with shops, entertainment venues and over 80 restaurants. Trips may be offered to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned during the apartheid era.

Durban is the busiest port in South Africa and is a popular tourist resort. It is famous for the Golden Mile, a long stretch of sandy beach ideal for surfers, swimmers and sunbathers, and bordered by uShaja Marine World, hotels and some of Durban's best Art Deco buildings. The city's Sri Sri Radhanath Temple of Understanding is a new and opulent temple which is open to visitors and has an underground restaurant.

The capital of Mozambique is also known as the City of Acacias, and was once a Portuguese Colony. The railway station and the Iron House were built by Gustav Eiffel who designed the Eiffel Tower, and south of the city are several reserves and national parks, including the Maputo Elephant Reserve where visitors can also see flamingos, leopards, crocodiles and hippos. Locals sell wood carvings and batik cloth from stalls on the beach.

Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth is a green city with a number of parks and gardens, including the large and wildlife-rich Settler's Park. The Donkin Trail is a good way to see the city's sites, taking in the market Square and grand City Hall, the gothic library and old settler cottages. Beyond the city is the Big Five game reserve of Shamwari and Addo Elephant Park, where Cape Buffalo can also be seen.

Richards Bay

This industrial port in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is the gateway to Zululand, the dunes, swamp, forests and wildlife of St Lucia Wetlands - hippos and crocodiles, pelicans, storks and flamingoes - and Hluhluwe Umfolosi Game Reserve. Other trips may be offered to the Shakaland Experience, a recreation of a Zulu homestead. Richards Bay has a new waterfront shopping mall, the Boardwalk.

This Namibian town is famous for the nearby sand dunes, the largest being Dune 7 offering wide-ranging views of the coast. Offshore is a large platform built to collect guano, now a major export, and an unusual and popular restaurant built on a raft. The area around Walvis Bay is an important wetland, a habitat for flamingos and the Damara tern. Trips may be offered to the Namib Desert, the Skeleton Coast - an inhospitable and arid terrain fronted by pounding surf and over a thousand shipwrecks - Swakopmund, Pelican Point seal colony and Sandwich Harbour.

Zanzibar (Tanzania)

The archipelago of Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania has white sand beaches and a string of coral reefs. Its main industries are dhow building and the cultivation of cloves, cinnamon and ginger, both of which feature on tours. Stone Town is the old quarter of Zanzibar City, and a World Heritage Site with many interesting buildings built from coral rock. The Old Dispensary's four stories are decorated with wood-carved balconies and the House of Wonders with its tiers of pillars is now the Museum of History and Culture.

African Cruise Itineraries

Many cruise itineraries begin their journey in South Africa, but from there, with 54 varied countries to explore, you have the choice of which direction to take. By cruising around Africa, travel to your destination is a pleasure. Return to the comfort on board and relax at the end of an eventful day, before waking up the next morning to discover what new extraordinary experience awaits you.

Enjoy a longer holiday! With greater distances to cover, cruises around Africa often exceed the standard week. Allow 10 and 14 for your African cruise and enjoy a more relaxed time, giving yourself the opportunity to see more of its amazing sights.

Top Africa Cruise Harbours

Situated at nearly the southernmost tip of Africa is the Port of Cape Town. With the presence of Table Mountain looming in the background and the vast expanses of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans merging into the deepest blue, Cape Town provides a dramatic stage to begin your voyage. Take a moment to wander along the waterfront, lively with trade, and admire the impressive warships, such as HMS Iron Duke.

Cape Town has something for everyone: impressive hiking routes, a cool urban, creative culture and gourmet restaurants and wineries.

Don’t miss an aerial cable ride up to the top of Table Mountain. With its 360-degree rotating floor, the views are simply breath-taking.

--> Cape Town cruises

Did you know…?

Cape Town is the host to Africa’s only species of penguin. The African Penguin, also known as the Jackass Penguin and Black-footed Penguin, has grown from just two breeding pairs to thousands of inhabitants on the southernmost tip of Africa.

Situated on the east coast, Durban is the busiest port in Africa. It’s gorgeous Golden Mile, which actually consists of 6km of beach, draws a line between the city and the Indian Ocean and provides a perfect opportunity for surfing, swimming and fishing. Its promenade is lined with shops, restaurants and entertainment complexes, and here, you can also find uShaka Marine World. This 16-hectare theme park features the largest aquarium in the southern hemisphere and offers the opportunity to get up close to some wild and fascinating sea animals.

Durban is a cosmopolitan city and its complex history has led to a rich ethnic diversity. Immerse yourself in this multiculturalism by visiting the Zulu and Indian markets, full of aroma of exotic spices.

--> Durban cruises

The world’s tallest bungee swing is found at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban.

A small, historic Namibian town, Walvis Bay is the gateway to some outstanding natural attractions. Many take an excursion into Africa’s oldest desert; the Namib Desert. With the highest sand dunes in the world, its surreal beauty is captivating.

Close by to Walvis Bay is Dune 7, the tallest in the coastal area. This sand dune is one you can hike up and the views from the top make the effort more than worthwhile.

Flocks of flamingos and pelicans feed at the 45,000-hectare lagoon on the outskirts of town, providing a colourful, photo opportunity for your African cruise album. --> Walvis Bay cruises

Walvis Bay, is called Walfischbucht in German, which translates to ‘Whale Bay’, also its previous name in English, and is in reference to its whaling history.

When is the best time for Africa cruises?

Due to its vast landmass stretching across the equator, climates across Africa can vary; from the subtropical desert temperatures of Namibia to the temperate, regions of South Africa.

It is best to plan the timing of your visit by prioritising what you want to see and where.

For example, if you are interested in safari, the best times for viewing varies between Southern and Eastern Africa and even the type of game you are hoping to see. In general, the drier seasons provide a better opportunity for viewing; between May and October in the south and January to March in the east. However, if you are hoping to catch the infamous and spectacular, Serengeti wildebeest migration in Tanzania, this occurs between November and August.

If you are seeking relaxation on some of Africa’s beautiful beaches, South Africa enjoys its warm summer months between December and March. Although, many resorts further north, such as Mauritius and the Seychelles, are considered year-round destinations, it is still worth double-checking for rainy seasons, risk of cyclones and extreme heat and humidity.

Prepare for big swings in temperature, especially when exploring the desert. Day times can be scotching hot, but then at night, temperatures fall dramatically and it can become very cold.

Top Sights in Africa

Wildlife safaris.

The top of many people’s lists when planning a cruise around Africa is going on a wildlife safari. Describing it as an unforgettable experience simply does not do it justice, as it is truly epic. From South Africa to Kenya and Tanzania or across to Namibia, the opportunity to see lions, giraffes, elephants or gorillas in their natural habitat cannot be missed.

Victoria Falls

Although taking a trip to Victoria Falls may involve venturing a little further from your cruise, if you have the opportunity to visit this stunning natural wonder, do not hesitate to go. Known as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ - ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ by the local Kololo tribe, it is also aptly described in modern terms as ‘the greatest curtain of falling water in the world’. The beauty and ferociousness of nature it displays is breath-taking.

Robben Island

There are significant moments in African history that have captured the world and the release of Nelson Mandela, after 18 years’ incarceration, is one of them. Visit Robben Island and gain an insight in the oppression of the apartheid regime and its impact on Africa culture.

Africa is quite a religious area, with Christianity and Islam widely practised, therefore it is respectful to dress conservatively.

Regional African Dishes

Bobotie is South Africa’s national dish and consists of a mixture of curried meat, often spiced mince, and fruit, topped with a creamy, egg-based sauce, similar to that of Moussaka.

With a large Indian influence in South Africa, particularly in Durban, which has the highest population of Indians outside of the country, their spicy cuisine is prevalent. In Durban, ‘Bunny Chow’, a mutton or bean curry served in a hollowed-out bread loaf, is a local city favourite.

Nshima is a carbohydrate side, made of cornmeal and although a common staple in Central Africa, it is mostly unheard of outside of the continent. It shares similarities with ugali or posho of East Africa and sadza of Zimbabwe. These staples are eaten frequently for lunch and dinner and like most carbohydrate dishes, are quite bland, so absorb other flavours readily.

Fruit is one of the most consumed foods in Africa, with watermelon being the clear favourite; delicious on a hot day!

Fascinating Facts about Africa

There are well over one thousand languages spoken in Africa, some estimates suggest closer to two thousand. English is an official language in many countries and is widely spoken, nonetheless learning a few local phrases will be welcomed.

Africa is home to some of nature’s largest and longest: the longest river (the Nile at 4,132 miles), the largest waterfall (Victoria Falls at 355 feet high and one mile wide) and the largest desert (the Sahara at an area of 9,200,000 square kilometres, comparable to the size of China or the United States!) and that’s before we even address the stats of its magnificent animals!

Over half the gold ever mined on the Earth was sourced from Witwatersrand, South Africa. The Witwatersrand Gold Rush in the 1800s led to extensive social and political implications. Gold mining in South Africa continues today and led to their currency gaining the name of ‘Rand’ in 1961.

Top Africa Tip For Your Africa Cruise

Take time to carefully plan your cruise around Africa to ensure you maximise your time on holiday. As well as considering the climate and what you would like to see and where, consider also visa requirements, travel vaccinations and any specialised equipment needed, i.e. binoculars, hiking boots or portable mosquito nets.

Choose the convenient option of going on a luxury cruise without the long-haul flight.

If a luxury cruise vacation is on your agenda this year, but you’re hesitant about having to fly internationally – either because you can’t manage it physically or you just don’t want to – rest assured that there are cruise options available. Many cruise lines offer the opportunity to embark on a cruise from American ports of call, without the need to sit on a plane for hours beforehand. American ports of embarkation in the summertime often include Anchorage, Boston, New York and Seattle. And during the winter, you can begin your luxury beach vacation in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, San Diego or Honolulu. It’s that simple. Chances are good there’s a convenient port close to you.

The benefits of short-haul flights are many.

• Short flights are best for people with health concerns, who may recently have had surgery or a stroke, or who have other conditions that prevent them from flying long hours. • Short flights won’t throw your sleep routine off-kilter, so you experience less jet lag and can start your vacation feeling fresher than you would if you’d had to travel a long distance first. You’re far less dehydrated, too. • Shorter flights are more manageable for families with children. There’s less hassle at the airport if you don’t have to navigate the passport hall, and you can get your family in and out of travel mode faster. • They’re good for those with mobility issues, who may not be able to spend a lot of time on a plane without being able to get up and walk around. • The shorter your flight, the less risk of deep vein thrombosis or life-threatening blood clots – both serious problems to consider. • Perhaps you have a fear of long-haul flights in general or of flying over water. Shorter flights may make you far less anxious – so you don’t need to start or end your vacation in a panic. • In general, the shorter the flight, the less worry there is over delays and cancellations.

It’s never been easier to take a cruise from within America to international ports.

Departing from a North American port, you can sail through any number of engaging itineraries to discover diverse natural landscapes, centuries of world history, quaint villages and cosmopolitan capitals. Destinations include the Caribbean , Mexico and beyond, including Panama , South America and Antarctica , plus Europe , Africa , Australia , New Zealand , the South Pacific and Asia

Smooth sailing: why you should try no-fly cruising with the kids

No-fly cruises from the UK with family make life infinitely easier – we’ve rounded up the many perks of family cruises without boarding a plane.

No-fly cruising makes travel with kids simpler

Family holidays can be a thrilling yet daunting prospect, especially when considering the logistics of travelling with children.

Does the idea of screaming offspring kicking plane seats or overpacking teens racking up luggage costs fill you with fear? Enter the serene sphere of no-fly cruising.

While flying might seem like the obvious choice for long-distance travel, opting for a cruise from the UK without the hassle of airports can transform your family holiday into a seamless experience packed with perks.

Families can drive to the port

Embrace a convenient getaway

One of the primary advantages of no-fly cruises with kids is the ease it offers. Instead of enduring the hustle and bustle of airports, flight disruptions, long security lines and the stress of managing restless little ones confined to seats, families can step onto their cruise ship directly from UK soil.

Ambassador Cruise Line multi-generational cruises leave from London Tilbury, eliminating the need for extensive pre-flight preparations and making the beginning of your family getaway a smooth and stress-free affair.

How to get to London Tilbury port

Guests on Ambassador no-fly cruises can drive and park at the port, take the c2c line train to Tilbury Town train station, arrive by taxi or make the most of Ambassador’s coach service, offered exclusively for passengers between London Victoria Coach station and the London Cruise Terminal on sailing days. The coach must be pre-booked at least seven days before sailing.

There are no luggage limits

Don’t fret about luggage limits

It’s rare to board a plane these days without someone in the party getting tripped up by stringent luggage restrictions, whether that’s overflowing hand baggage or weighty suitcases – and it can prove both infuriating and expensive.

Not so with cruises! A no-fly family cruise holiday means you can take as much as you like – no resorting to getting out the measuring tape or weighing scales required – although maybe don’t go crazy; do you really need a different outfit every day?

Ambassador Cruise Line luggage

There are no limits to how much luggage you can bring on an Ambassador no-fly cruise, however, do bear in mind how much space you’ll have in your cabin and that your suitcases will need storing in the stateroom as there are no separate baggage facilities aboard Ambassador cruise ships. Under-bed storage is available in most cabins for suitcases no bigger than 23 cm depth.

Note, if you use Ambassador’s coach service, no single suitcase can weigh more than 23kg (maximum size 76cm x 48cm x 29) and only one piece of hand baggage is allowed per person (maximum size 45 x 36 x 20cm).

Enriching exploration

No-fly cruises from the UK present a unique opportunity for children to embrace the journey itself. Youngsters can soak up magical coastal views, diverse landscapes and story-book-worthy seascapes, all while indulging in a range of onboard activities tailored to their age groups. How about an ice cream for whoever spots land ahoy first?

Travel the world fuss-free

A significant advantage of no-fly cruising is the ability to explore multiple destinations without the need for constant packing and unpacking – an absolute boon for frazzled parents!

What’s more, cruises cover various ports of call, allowing families to immerse themselves in different cultures, languages and landscapes seamlessly. From historic Moroccan cities to the natural wonders of Norway, each stopover with Ambassador multi-generational cruises opens children’s eyes to the glory of travel, all while the comfort of your ‘floating hotel’ remains constant.

Family-friendly activities

While Ambassador is generally an adults-only cruise line, it caters well for kids during its no-fly family cruise offerings, from pool fun to exciting activities.

During last year’s school holidays, Ambassador multi-generational cruises comprised pirate-themed crafts and a special pirate dinner as well as family drama classes, Just Dance and TikTok sessions, kids’ disco, family karaoke, trivia, Mini Me gameshows and family scavenger hunts – ensuring children are entertained and engaged throughout the journey, providing parents with some well-deserved relaxation time. How about a cocktail for Mummy?

Hear from Ambassador guests what they thought about their 2023 multi-generational sailing!

“Three generations had an amazing time. Ambassador totally exceeded our expectations. Thank you to the whole crew, there are no weak links.” – SA
“One of the best entertainment teams we have come across. Stage shows excellent. Food and service very good, will definitely be travelling with Ambassador again.” – LB

However, families should note there are no dedicated children’s facilities on board and kids using the onboard pools must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.

What’s more, kids in nappies (including swim nappies) and little ones who are not toilet trained are not allowed in the swimming pools or whirlpools on Ambassador ships for public health reasons.

Bonding opportunities

No-fly cruise holidays foster an environment that encourages bonding and these Ambassador family cruises are ideal for bringing everyone in the gang together, whether that’s grandparents, teenagers or tots (as long as they’re over six months old).

With ample opportunities for shared experiences, such as exploring new destinations together, participating in onboard activities, or simply enjoying meals as a family, such cruises create moments that strengthen familial bonds and create lasting memories.

Bring everyone in the family together

Dine in multiple venues

On the topic of family feasts, there is a range of dining venues on board Ambassador ships.

Both Ambience and Ambition boast outstanding main restaurants (Buckingham and Holyrood respectively) as well as casual buffet eatery Borough Market. As for speciality restaurants, both Ambassador cruise ships are also home to Chef’s Table – a VIP multi-course dining experience specially created and hosted by the Executive Chef, including a tour to the Galley – and Indian restaurant Saffron.

Additionally, flagship Ambience features Sea & Grass, which serves a seven-course “tasting journey” and Ambition has Mediterranean restaurant Lupino’s – so there are plenty of options to please all palates!

Safety and Security

For parents concerned about the safety and security of their children while travelling, no-fly cruises from the UK offer a reassuring environment. Cruise ships maintain stringent safety protocols and dedicated staff to ensure the well-being of all passengers, providing parents with peace of mind.

Great cheap cruise deals

Ambassador has some amazing family no-fly cruise deals up for grabs, so sailing with all the kids in tow doesn’t have to break the bank. On certain multi-generational cruises children can travel from just £99pp and on all of them you can currently bag half-price drinks packages! What are you waiting for?

Hello traveller!

3.5 year cruise further delayed, guests asked to cover hotel costs, passengers say

Villa Vie Residences is not covering hotel and other costs for passengers waiting to board its three-and-a-half-year world cruise , according to guests.

Angela and Steve Theriac said the company asked guests to pay for their own expenses “for at least the next seven days” amid additional hurdles before the vessel can depart in a video posted to their YouTube channel , MidLife Cruising, on Tuesday.

Given the cost of accommodations in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where the Villa Vie Odyssey ship is currently docked, the pair determined it was cheaper for them to fly back to the U.S. Guests had been able to board the ship during the day but have had to disembark at night.

“It is what it is,” Angela said in the video. “Yes, we’re still hopeful that this will set sail. Hopefully, we get news in the next week (saying), ‘Come back, we’re ready to set sail.’ But this time, I’m gonna say, ‘Can I see that in writing?’”

The Theriacs did not immediately respond to an interview request.

“While the road has had its challenges, every decision we’ve made is focused on the well-being and safety of our residents,” CEO Mikael Petterson told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. “We have supported our residents with trips around Europe, and spent over $2m in hotel stays and trips to accommodate and entertain them while Odyssey has been getting ready for launch. Since residents are scattered throughout Europe in over 20 different hotels, we have decided to let residents plan their hotels and way back to the ship for launch.”

He said guests would receive compensation for those costs in the form of onboard credit up to $200 per day.

“The hard work continues, and we are on track to welcome passengers onboard by the end of this week,” Petterson added. “We look forward to launching with pride and purpose, knowing we’re not just building a ship but a united community at sea together.”

The cruise was originally set to begin in May, but the company faced numerous setbacks as it readied the vessel for the voyage. Petterson told USA TODAY last month that Villa Vie had “been quite humbled by the scale of what it takes to reactivate a 30-year-old vessel from a four-year layup. After the lapse of all certifications of class we are now considered (a) new ship where all machinery and equipment must work as if new.”

What is a world cruise? It's not a 'shoot-from-the-hip decision'

The Odyssey previously sailed as MS Braemar for Fred Olsen Cruise Lines before Villa Vie bought it in 2023.

He said in the statement on Aug. 29 that the ship was expected to launch the following week.

The delays come after a three-year world cruise from Life at Sea Cruises was scrapped late last year following investor withdrawal and difficulties acquiring its desired ship. Petterson worked on that sailing as well but left the company months before the cancellation, The New York Times reported.

Angela Theriac said in Tuesday’s video that Villa Vie’s cruise is “our dream, and we’re gonna hang in there.”

“We hope this doesn't end up like some other ill-fated residential cruise ships,” she added. “We hope it’s just another week or so.”
