Community rallies at Edmond North after student was barred from displaying American flag

Parents and students gathered in Edmond North High School's parking lot Monday morning with flags affixed to their vehicles in response to a student who was told he couldn't fly the American flag from his truck, news outlets report.

KOCO reported that more than 50 vehicles joined the rally before school this morning and have since left.

An Edmond Public Schools spokesperson said the district will not make a statement today on the demonstration.

More: Ryan Walters, social media weigh in on Edmond North flag policy

Controversy sparked last week after Caleb Horst, a senior at Edmond North, was told that he couldn't fly the American flag on his truck.

“I’ve been flying it for quite a while,” Horst told KOCO. “I’ve never really had problems with it before, and it’s our First Amendment, so it’s kind of hard for them to infringe upon our rights."

Last week, EPS told The Oklahoman that prohibiting all types of flags on vehicles is a long-standing practice due to potential disruption.

The policy is also implemented in an effort to provide a safe school environment as flying flags on vehicles creates safety issues in the parking lot and can cause damage to other vehicles, the district said.

"To be clear, this is not about the American flag or patriotism. Edmond Public Schools proudly displays the American flag prominently and in the proper, respectful way outside each of our buildings and in our classrooms," Jeff Bardach, EPS public information officer, said. "Not only do we recite the Pledge of Allegiance every morning as we start our school day, but we also present the colors and play the national anthem at most of our athletic events. All of these things are done in the proper fashion according to flag etiquette."

In response, four state lawmakers − all of them from the Edmond area − sent a letter to Edmond Superintendent Angela Grunewald's office urging administrators to rethink their position on student displays of the American flag.

Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters reacted to EPS' practice last week on social media after seeing Libs of TikTok share a post about the situation.

"God and country are now hated by the woke left," Walters said on X.

Movie Trailers Have Gotten Worse. Why Aren’t Studios Having Fun With Them?

Promos give away too much or too little or are misleading or don’t leave anything out. We could go on. But there are ways to fix them.

  • Share full article

By Esther Zuckerman

I know the trailer for David Fincher’s 2010 drama, “The Social Network,” by heart.

We hear the soft sounds of a young women’s choir singing Radiohead’s “Creep” as a montage of mundane Facebook interactions flashes across the screen. When the voices hit the lyric “you’re so very special,” the camera zooms out of a pixelated image to reveal the face of Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg. It’s almost a minute in when footage from the actual movie starts to play and Zuckerberg chatters about wanting to get into Harvard final clubs. From there it’s a quick escalation of tension that reaches a peak when Andrew Garfield strides onscreen screaming, “Mark!” That’s when the tagline appears: “You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.”

Just thinking about it, I get chills. “The Social Network” is a great movie. The “Social Network” trailer is also a great movie. It just happens to be only 2 minutes and 30 seconds long.

Movie trailers are, at their most basic level, marketing, of course. But they can also be so much more, little short films unto themselves, defined by excellent editing and the ability to create a feeling of thrilling anticipation. I love a great trailer, yet I can’t help but feel that there’s been a drought recently. And I’m not alone. My social media feeds are flooded with trailer-related complaints. (Currently one of the main targets is the trailer for “Speak No Evil,” which has been charged with showing the entire movie.)

With studios scrambling to fill theaters, they seem to be struggling to figure out what kind of trailers will draw audiences. Instead of taking chances, they are making creatively inert spots. There are trailers that give away too much (“Trap”), trailers that are disappointingly generic (“A Quiet Place: Day One”) and trailers that feel tonally off (“Gladiator II”). Mostly, no one is having any fun with them anymore.

Throughout Hollywood history, trailers have taken many forms. In the industry’s early days, the appeal to the audience was direct. The trailer for “Citizen Kane” spends about 30 seconds on a shot of a microphone descending while the director and star Orson Welles explains in voice-over that “what follows is supposed to advertise our first motion picture.”

As Hollywood became more experimental, some trailers did as well. Stanley Kubrick’s promos for “Dr. Strangelove” (1964) and “ A Clockwork Orange” (1972) are beloved for their collagelike qualities, which convey the films’ sensations while revealing very little.

Starting in the 1980s and extending through the early 2000s, trailers were dominated by the booming voice-overs of men like Don LaFontaine and Hal Douglas , whose low, authoritative sounds conferred a distinctive gravitas. LaFontaine, known as the “voice of God,” was credited with coming up with the oft-mocked phrase “in a world”— like “ in a world that’s powered by violence” — used to advertise everything from “ The Road Warrior” (1981) to “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut” (1999). LaFontaine once explained in an interview that the line was conceived as an easy shortcut: “You very rapidly set the scene.”

Historically, trailers haven’t always been so expository. The one for “Alien” (1979) is commonly regarded as among the best of all time, a mood-setting marvel that begins by nearly silently traveling through the vastness of space, before revealing the ominous image of an egg. The terror is palpable in quick cuts as the camera moves through the ship with Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. An out-of-context image of the cat Jonesy baring his teeth only adds to the tension. You never see what is causing all the chaos.

Perhaps the ultimate question when it comes to trailers is how much to give away. Voice-over makes it easy to dole out just the amount of information you need; as Hollywood has moved away from that tactic, striking the perfect balance can be difficult.

When the Trailer Reveals Too Much

For the most part the spot for M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap” is excellent. It quickly establishes the basic premise — a girl and her father are attending a pop star’s arena tour — but there’s something sinister at hand. An eager merch salesman explains why something feels amiss: The entire concert is a trap for a serial killer known as “the Butcher.” From there the spot goes right ahead and explains just who this murderer is: the goofy dad played by Josh Hartnett, who checks on his victim through an app on his phone.

Now, of course, revealing that gives the trailer a perfect button to end on, Hartnett’s smiling face turning into a menacing grimace. The problem isn’t the revelation that Hartnett is not playing a good guy — that’s the entire premise of the movie — but did we need to see the full evidence of his misdeeds? Couldn’t there have been some mystery to what that look actually means?

When the Trailer Reveals Too Little

“A Quiet Place: Day One” didn’t seem very interesting based on the trailers, in part because they didn’t share much information about the characters or the story at all. The promos indicated that the movie was a prequel to “A Quiet Place,” and that Lupita Nyong’o dodges aliens who hunt via sound in New York City. But the spots included few other examples of tone or performance. The actual movie came as a surprise. Amid the chaos, the director Michael Sarnoski had found a touching drama about a woman with cancer who finds the will to survive just a little longer. By flattening out the narrative, the trailer made the film less appealing.

When the Trailer Shows the Entire Movie

You don’t need to show us the whole darn thing. This isn’t about revealing a twist, it’s about giving us what feels like an abbreviated beat-by-beat account of the entire runtime. See the trailer for “The Fall Guy,” well over three minutes of set pieces that leave very little to the imagination. Not only do we get a full explanation of the premise — fine, whatever — we also get glimpses of how it plays out. For a movie about a stuntman, one would think they’d want to wait to show us some of the bigger stunts.

Meanwhile, the trailer for the James McAvoy-starring “Speak No Evil” — a remake of the 2022 Danish film — explicitly shows how what seems like a social drama about two families becoming entwined on vacation turns into a horror story. (Though, it should be noted, it doesn’t reveal the truly upsetting ending of the original.)

When We Don’t Hear the Music

Every issue you can have with a trailer seems to stem from a misinterpretation of what audiences want. Take the recent trend of movie musicals trying to hide the fact that they are movie musicals, even though it turns out movie musicals do pretty well at the box office.

Yet even “Wicked” — “Wicked” of all things! — has bought into the idea that musicals need to be disguised. You can hear snippets of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo belting songs like “Popular” and “Defying Gravity,” but you never see them actually perform those songs. As a devoted fan, all I want to see is how these two tackle their numbers.

When the Music’s Too Sad

Music in general can be a particular hurdle for trailers. While the “Creep” needle drop worked for “The Social Network,” it’s gotten to the point that hearing a slow version of a popular song draws eye-rolls. The Sony Music Publishing marketing chief Brian Monaco has called the practice “trailerizing,” designed specifically to make audiences perk up their ears in recognition. They might not be focused on the promo, he told Variety in 2021 , but when they hear the chorus, “they go, ‘Wait, I know this song.’ They start paying attention, and now they’re watching the trailer.’”

The first trailer for the legacy sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” kicks off with a somber interpretation of Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song),” used so memorably in the 1988 original when the Deetz family and their dinner guests are possessed to dance. The familiarity of that music, however, is a bug, not a feature: All it does is imply that “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is going to be a less-fun rehash. The second “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” trailer is much more exciting in part because it’s scored to the propulsive sounds of the Bee Gees’ “Tragedy.”

When the Music Doesn’t Fit

It’s not always a lethargic tune that can undo a trailer. In the first look at “ Gladiator II,” sword fights were set to Kanye West and Jay-Z’s “No Church in the Wild,” presumably to highlight the lyric “blood stains the Colosseum doors” as the Colosseum flashes onscreen. The anachronism isn’t the problem, it’s that the choice comes across as an outdated plea for relevancy. Not only is the rapper now known as Ye persona non grata thanks to his antisemitic remarks, but “No Church in the Wild” was already used anachronistically in the trailer for 2012’s “ The Great Gatsby.” Been there, done that.

What’s the Solution?

There’s no easy solution to the trailer problem, but I have a couple of suggestions.

Let trailers be corny again: Give into the hokeyness of Orson Welles proudly introducing his film. Do a voice-over. If you’re at a loss, go with the classics, but do so with earnestness, not cynicism.

Let them be creative: Cast trends aside and use images that make people lean in instead of saying, ‘Huh, I’ve seen this one before.’” Forget the slow songs. Consider a fast one instead.

And most of all, make them honest: Capture the actual mood of the film you’re trying to sell. You don’t have to spoon-feed us information, but you should give a sense of what’s to come. It is a “coming attraction,” after all.

Think of that “Social Network” trailer. Before seeing it I was skeptical that a film about the invention of Facebook could be at all interesting. After? I was sold on this bizarrely entrancing tech thriller with a haunted overtone. That’s movie magic.

Trump won over voters from the largest Native American tribe in North Carolina. How?

A strong campaign presence from the trumps, an emphasis on traditional christian values and a tight-knit community has all played a role in the switch for these native american robeson county voters..

Portrait of Sarah Gleason

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect that the Harris Campaign opened an office in Robeson County after interviews for this story were completed.

For years, the Native American Lumbee vote was a Democratic stronghold in North Carolina, but things are changing.

Robeson County, a rural majority minority county in the Southern battleground state, is home to the largest Native American tribe east of the Mississippi – the Lumbee – who account for about 42% of the county population . For many years leaning toward a blue vote was considered a part of their culture.

But in 2016 and in 2020, Robeson County voted for Donald Trump .

The shift is notable because “Native voters, by and large, are very Democratic, very progressive voters,” said Jordan James Harvill, a member of the Cherokee nation descendant of the Choctaw nation and national program director for Advance Native Political Leadership.

Sign-up for Your Vote: Text with the USA TODAY elections team.

That’s reflected in the voter registration records: The county’s largest voter bloc among both Native American voters and all registered voters is Democratic. But Robeson County’s shift from voting blue to red is not a national outlier.

The American Communities Project , which breaks down counties by census data and categorizes Robeson as Native American Land (a category that includes counties with large Native American populations), found that “President Donald Trump won these counties by about seven percentage points in 2020, flipping Barack Obama's three-point win in 2012."

Earning the Native American vote, although not a homogenous bloc, could tip the scales of some close races. And if Vice President Kamala Harris , now the Democratic presidential nominee, wants to flip this county back to blue, Harvill said, she needs their votes.

“I think that overwhelmingly Native communities are going to be still a very decisive voting bloc in this election, if not decide the election entirely in places like Arizona and places like North Carolina,” Harvill said.

The puzzle of why this once solid blue community has recently supported Trump at the polls is a complex one, but there are hints in the campaign presence from Republicans, an emphasis on traditional Christian values, and the small-town community feel that values connection over political affiliation.

Rhonda Dial, 55, has lived in Robeson County her entire life, and ever since she could vote, she was a registered Democrat. She recounted what her grandmother told her as a child: “We vote Democrat because it’s the party that cares for the poor.”

That is, until this year, when she switched her registration to unaffiliated.

She changed her affiliation with her husband, Anthony Dial, 55, to reflect her voting record: casting a ballot for who she has the best connection within the community, regardless of party affiliation.

The Dials − who met in high school and now have three children and eight grandchildren − voted for Trump in 2016, plan to vote for him this November and say the Republican Party is only building momentum in their community.

Robeson County also has low voter turnout coming in at 19% in the 2024 North Carolina presidential primary, about 5 percentage points less than the statewide voter turnout.

Because of the county’s diverse makeup and low turnout, Debra Cleaver, founder and CEO of VoteAmerica, said it’s difficult to draw conclusions about the change in overall beliefs of the Lumbee people or the county. Instead, recent voting patterns may show a change in who is turning out to vote.

What's true? What's false? Sign up for USA TODAY's Checking the Facts newsletter.

Connection over party affiliation

Ever since she was young, Rhonda Dial has been involved in politics. She grew up in a closely bonded community where her father was the tribal chairman for two terms and where she was expected to work at the voting polls and go door-knocking.

Her focus has always been on building trust and political involvement, not necessarily party loyalty.

She has voted for Democratic candidates and Republican candidates, and although her political choices may be nuanced, sometimes splitting her ticket, she’s sure of one thing: at the end of the day, her loyalty lies in her community connections, not in the letter next to a candidates’ name.

To paint the picture, Rhonda Dial pointed to Robeson County’s history of political representation.

She first remembers voting for North Carolina state Rep. Charles Graham, a Lumbee Democrat who served from 2011 to 2023. She trusted Graham, and so he earned her vote, which just happened to be Democratic.

Prep for the polls: Follow the 2024 presidential candidates

Before Graham, was North Carolina state Rep. Ronnie Sutton, also a Lumbee Democrat who served from 1993 to 2011, whom Rhonda Dial called ‘Mr. Ronnie.’

“Him and my dad were close,” Rhonda Dial said. “I grew up knowing Mr. Ronnie, so we really trusted him. So, he was Democrat, so hey, whatever Mr. Ronnie did, it was good because we trusted him.”

Flash forward and now the county is represented by three Republicans, Sen. Danny Britt, Rep. Jarrod Lowery and Rep. Brenden Jones. The Dials spoke fondly of their representatives, especially of Lowery, who is the brother of Lumbee tribal chairman John Lowery.

Those are the community politicians the Dials trust these days.

James Hunt, 79, a Democratic businessman, veteran and Lumbee member, said the Robeson County Republicans in leadership have created strong friendships and trust in the community.

Sometimes you need a favor, or help solving a problem in your community, and so you call your representative for help, he said, and it doesn’t matter so much about their party affiliation if they get the work done.

“So what do you do when it’s time to vote?” Hunt said. “You have a tendency to remember things like that. And over the past 20 years, that has been a gradual process.”

In other words, state representation has shifted Republican in recent years, creating trust in the party and affecting voting up and down the ballot.

Christian values

Along with a value in community connection, some Lumbee also feel left behind by the Democratic Party, mostly blaming "overly liberal" policies for their departure.

Lowery said he gets calls from constituents often echoing that sentiment.

“A lot of the Lumbee would tell you today that the Democratic Party has left them,” Lowery said. “You know, they’re no longer talking about issues that’s important to them.”

Issues like access to health care, an out-of-control opioid epidemic, availability of affordable housing, high gas prices, and a lack of full federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe contribute to this malaise, Lowery said. Instead, they see the Democratic Party talking about abortion and the LGBTQ+ community, which tend to feel out of touch and out of line with community values, Lowery said.

For Gerald Goolsby, a 65-year-old Lumbee member and Tribal Council representative for District 2, Christianity is a huge part of his life and his decision-making process when voting.

Growing up, Goolsby knew the tradition was to vote Democratic in his community, but once he looked past tradition and evaluated how his stances aligned with the parties’ stances, he said he had to vote Republican. For example, he said, he couldn’t stand behind the Democratic Party’s stance on abortion or LGBTQ+ issues because of his Christian beliefs.

Christianity is a core principle for Lumbee member Hunt too, but when he heads to the ballot box, he votes blue.

Hunt says religion has been the biggest factor in his neighbors switching parties. Churches in the area don’t make explicit political statements, he said, but they comment on politicized topics like abortion and the LGBTQ+ community.

On-the-ground investments from the Trumps

The Trump family has been putting boots on the ground in Robeson County for several years now, often during times of need.

Trump's daughter-in-law Lara Trump, now the Republican National Committee's co-chair, visited the county in 2016 right after Hurricane Matthew hit. Cara Pearson, chair of Robeson County’s Democratic Party, said the visit heavily influenced voters’ perception of the Democratic Party. People saw the Republicans and wondered where the Democrats were, and they took that to the polls.

Then, in 2018, Ivanka Trump visited Lumberton to volunteer after Hurricane Florence hit.

In 2020, Donald Trump Jr. and the former president visited the county and publicly expressed support for federal recognition of the Lumbee, who currently hold only state recognition, meaning they’re left out of federal resources that other tribes can access.

The Trump campaign’s interest in Robeson County could be the result of a realization that they could not win on the white vote alone, Harvill said.

“So they have to start thinking about how they capture new coalitions of voters,” Harvill said. “And that starts in the Latino community, but it expands into the Native community."

Hunt, a Democrat, said Trump showed his skills of energizing a crowd but failed to address important issues.

“He handles a crowd well, you gotta give it to him, but it’s in my opinion mostly an act,” Hunt said. “He's performing and he’s getting results.”

In addition to the Trump family's presence in the community, the Republican National Committee created a community center in the heart of Pembroke, the home of the Lumbee headquarters.

Some Lumbee Democrats say the community center hasn’t done much for the Robeson people despite its presence.

The Trump visits may have also reached conservative voters in the area, who before 2016 found little Republican representation in the state.

Unlike registered Black and Native American voters in Robeson, who lean Democratic, white voters in the county, who account for about 20,000 registrations, are pretty evenly split between the Democratic and Republican parties.

Ronnie Lamb, 53, has lived in Robeson County his whole life, and he cuts hair with his brother at Lumberton Barber Shop, where the walls are decorated with taxidermy, the show "Duck Dynasty" plays in the background and clients wear an American flag barber cape.

Lamb is a registered unaffiliated voter, but conservatism has always been at his core.

Though his views have largely stayed the same over the years, the change in his home county has been incredible, he said.

“Twenty years ago, that would have been a death sentence,” Lamb said. “If you put an ‘R’ beside your name, you was gon’ get no votes.”

Harvill said he believes Trump activated conservative voters and in turn discouraged Democratic voters.

“Democratic voters become less excited about voting over time,” Harvill said. “They’ll stop seeing it as a mechanism for change, because cycle after cycle, Republicans are starting to win these races.”

Can Democrats win the county back in 2024?

With two Republican wins under Robeson County’s belt, all eyes are on whether the county will remain red or flip back to its blue roots.

For many, Harris’ replacement of President Joe Biden has offered a sense of excitement and hope , but she still has a lot of work to do to earn the Native vote, Harvill said.

“What Kamala said when she announced her formal campaign for president after the president stepped down was that she wanted to earn the vote, and we genuinely believe that she has a lot of earning to do,” Harvill said.

The Harris campaign has an open office in Robeson County with a full-time organizer on the ground, adding to their list of over 25 spots in the state.

She needs to develop a platform that speaks to Native American-specific issues like mental health treatment, higher education support, protection against violence and workforce development, Harvill said.

If she can do that, coupled with an on-the-ground presence, “I think that this is anyone’s game,” Harvill said.

Who's ahead in presidential race? Here's what polls show on Harris, Trump

2-minute read.

Portrait of Maria Francis

The Election Day countdown clock is ticking with only 69 days left as of Wednesday.

While there are many local and state races to be voted on, the biggest question is: "Who will be the 47th president of the United States."

The vice presidential candidates have been chosen, the national conventions are behind us and there are only days before the Sept. 10 presidential debate is held between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Story continues below photo gallery.

President Joe Biden dropped out of the race shortly after the June 27 presidential debate against Trump.

Will Trump be returned to the White House with J.D. Vance at his side or will Harris become the first female president with progressive partner Tim Walz at her side?

The answer to those questions depends on whom you ask and which polls you read.

Here is what the polls and odds are saying as we head into Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

  • ABC News project 538 shows Harris leading in the national polls 47.0% to Trump at 43.7%
  • 270towin shows Harris leading the national polls by 1.9% over Trump
  • realclearpolling shows the betting odds are in Harris's favor with a spread of +1.7 over Trump
  • Polymarket , a crypto-trading platform is expressing closer odds by the betting public, with Harris leading by 1% point over Trump.

Polls and odds are constantly changing. These numbers were reflected as of Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2024 at 11 a.m.

Are you having trouble finding the perfect RV for you? Custom RV manufacturers might be able to help. You’ll find those custom RV manufacturers will say “yes” more often than “no” when it comes to the features you want. People also find it surprising that many custom RV manufacturers are more affordable than they originally thought.

Designing a custom RV ensures that you end up with the perfect RV the first time around. As long as it’s physically possible, the RV manufacturers in this article will help make your dream RV a reality.

What Is a Custom RV?

Fancy RV interior

A custom RV is exactly what it sounds like an RV custom-built to your preferences and lifestyle. How much customization is available for each RV is entirely dependent upon the manufacturer.

While most manufacturers give customers the option to select certain interior design options or purchase upgrade packages, others provide a more total build customization experience. With some custom RV manufacturers, you can choose your layout, features, accessibility options, exterior design, interior decor, and so much more.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Custom RV?

Many factors go into how much time your custom RV will take to build. Situations such as how backlogged your manufacture is, how complicated your build is, and what kind of special amenities you are asking for must be considered.

An average build could be anywhere from 18-24 months or longer.

7 Best Custom RV Manufacturers by RV Type

No matter what kind of RV you have in mind, there’s a custom RV manufacturer out there ready and willing to make your dreams a reality. Here we’re covering 5 of the best manufacturers, no matter what type or style of RV you’re looking for.

1. Phoenix Pop-Up Campers : Custom Truck Camper Manufacturer

Custom RV Manufacturer phoenix pop up campers

Phoenix Pop-Up Campers builds custom slide-in, flatbed, and chassis-mounted pop-up truck campers.

Pop-up truck campers are a great option if you’re interested in this RV category. They’re less top-heavy, weigh less overall, are more aerodynamic, and have become an excellent alternative to the #VanLife.

Phoenix Pop Up Campers slide-in campers start around $26k, and their flatbed campers have a base price of $44k.

Customers can choose from many different types of floor plans and upgrade packages, no matter what size truck bed you have. Phoenix only caters to full-size pickups, but a half-ton with a short bed won’t be turned away.

2. Escape: Custom Molded Fiberglass Travel Trailers

Custom RV Manufacturer Escape 21C Exterior

Custom molded fiberglass travel trailers are extremely popular. These little campers hold their value and last a long time due to their molded fiberglass construction.

They’re less susceptible to leaks, they’re aerodynamic, and these RV manufacturers will build the custom fiberglass camper of your dreams.

Escape Trailers builds fiberglass travel trailers and fifth wheels. This Canada-based RV manufacturer builds the largest molded fiberglass campers on the market today. While they’re not a direct descendant of Boler, their methods are tried and true.

If you want a custom Escape trailer, you can choose from 6 base models.

Escape’s customizations include:

  • Exterior Features
  • Multimedia and Electronics
  • Off-grid power packages

These are just some of the many standard and optional amenities offered by these affordable campers. If you’re not quite sure what you want, Escape can start you off with its many popular feature packages that you can tailor to your tastes.

You can get a price estimate by starting your build on the Escape website.

6. Newell: Custom Class A Motorhomes

Custom RV Manufacturer Newell Class A Motorhome Exterior

Newell Coach has been producing luxury Class A motorhomes since 1967. This decades-old custom motorcoach manufacturer claims to offer more customization opportunities than any other motorhome manufacturer that exists today.

When you get a custom RV from Newell, you can choose to start with an existing floor plan, to combine multiple floor plans, or completely start from scratch. And that’s just getting started.

Then, you get to design the interior. Newell’s interior decorator will help you select materials, colors, and much more. You also have the ability to request specific or special entertainment equipment, tech, and much more.

The overarching advantage to having a custom motorhome built by Newell is the fact that this company is dedicated to luxury, quality, and stellar craftsmanship. It’s why the company was founded and why they’re still popular today.

7. EarthRoamer: Custom Expedition Vehicles

Custom RV Manufacturer EarthRoamer HD Cumberland Exterior

What is an expedition vehicle, you may ask? An expedition vehicle is pretty much just what it sounds like. A rugged RV that can go wherever you want to take it. These RVs can go just about anywhere. They’re built with rugged tires, heavy-duty suspensions, and four-season insulation, and are equipped with off-grid power systems.

EarthRoamer is one of the top custom Overlanding RV manufacturers on the market today. Each EarthRoamer is built custom to order with a focus on luxury off-road travel. There are two base models and 12 different floor plans to choose from, each with a ton of standard options and are fully customizable.

This custom RV manufacturer believes that you don’t have to sacrifice any of the comforts of home, even when traveling in the most remote spots on the planet.

Benefits of Buying a Custom RV

The first and most obvious benefit of buying a custom RV is having a motorhome or travel trailer that’s designed to your tastes, lifestyle, and needs. Aside from that, you can expect a better build quality, a great customer experience, and a one-of-a-kind RV.

Unless you go with surface-level customization options like color or interior fabrics, you’ll have an RV different from everyone else. In a world of mass-produced RVs, this is a benefit many take pride in.

The average RV owner uses their coach for 8 years before they upgrade or sell their unit. Custom RV owners hang on to their motorhomes or travel trailers many years longer. When they have everything they want, and with the investment they made, it’s worth keeping.

Are There Any Downsides?

There are a few downsides to having a custom RV built. Of course, getting a personalized RV from a custom RV manufacturer is going to cost a lot more than purchasing a pre-built unit.

Aside from the cost, though, is the wait time. Depending on which manufacturer you choose, you could be waiting as long as 2 years or more for your custom RV.

Many custom RV manufacturers are smaller companies and have a backlog of custom orders. Even if there isn’t a backlog, expect to wait up to 6 months for your custom RV to be ready to drive off the lot.

Custom RVs also have a harder time in the used market. Since they are so specific to your needs, RV dealerships may buy your custom coach for a price lower than you expect.

In their experience, custom builds sit on the lot for a long time until they find the right buyer. Before you invest in your dream RV, learn from others about what they did if you plan on eventually selling this one down the road.

How Much Does an RV Cost to Build?

RV tech working inside an RV

Since custom RVs are individually built, there’s no ballpark price we can give you. Different models have different price ranges. There’s such a wide variety of upgrades, appliances, and options to choose from that this number is impossible to guesstimate.

If you’re serious about buying one, most custom RV manufacturers have a “build your own” tool on their website that can help you estimate the total cost. Others have a phone number to call them and get a quote.

Custom RV manufacturers try to make the designing and purchasing process as easy as possible. Many of their sales representatives will walk you through the process keeping your budget in mind. Just remember that almost all custom RVs will cost more than a pre-built RV in the same category or model type.

Can You Buy an RV Directly From the Manufacturer?

Yes, you can. In the case of custom RVs, you can buy directly from the manufacturer. However, you can also work with a dealer who will help you work with a manufacturer to get a custom RV.

In most cases, it’s easier and a better customer experience to work directly with the manufacturer. You can even go and tour the factory and see your RV in production with some custom builders.

Buying directly from a manufacturer is called “factory direct”, and it can cut out the middle-man prices of buying your RV through a dealership.

It also helps you avoid miscommunications because you’re able to communicate directly with the manufacturer throughout the entire build process. You’ll know what’s going on with your RV every step of the way.

How to Order a Custom RV

Person sitting at a laptop holding a cell phone

The process of ordering a custom RV will vary depending on the company you decide to go with. Many custom RV manufacturers have a “build your own” tool right on their website. With these tools, you can select your base model and customizations and see the price estimate along the entire process.

Once you submit your order, you’ll be contacted by the company to finalize the details. Other custom RV manufacturers will walk you through the entire process, which will involve contacting them via email or phone.

Once your custom RV makes it to the production line, you can expect to work with the manufacturer and designers to make sure it’s completely up to your standards.

Can’t Find an RV To Fit Your Needs? A Custom RV Might Be Right For You

With the thousands of RV floorplans and hundreds of RV manufacturers out there today, there’s a great chance you can find a wonderful floorplan for you and your family. However, you don’t have to settle for something if you can’t find one that has everything you want or need.

These custom RV manufacturers make it possible to own an RV that’s tailored to your tastes, lifestyle, and needs. If you haven’t been able to find what you’re looking for, maybe it’s time to design it yourself.

Is It Worth Trying To Build Your Own RV?

RV could depend on your abilities and your patience. Once you’ve completed your own build, you have the satisfaction of seeing your dreams come to fruition. Getting it all done could tax your patience, your bank account, and your relationships.

Building your own RV might be cheaper than a purchase if you do it yourself. It will likely end up just the way you want it but it will take longer to get it done—maybe years. You must gauge how quickly you want to be up and running.

You also should ask yourself how knowledgeable you are about building a camper. Having to consult other RVers or Google for everything could slow down your progress. Since your finished RV is particular to your tastes, it might be a bit more difficult to find a buyer when you are ready to sell.

Final Words About Custom RVs

Having a custom RV is a great way to get exactly what you want in your camper. There is almost nothing, other than money, that can stop you from getting what your mind can conceive.

Prepare to have lots of attention because your one-of-a-kind RV will be the talk of the campground.

It’s good that you brought up an RV that would be made specifically for your tastes and way of life. I’ve been considering buying an RV, and customizing it sounds like a smart idea. I’ll look into an RV builder who can assist in building one. I appreciate you sharing!

Can you suggest a co mpany that would put the door on the opposite side of a standard 35 foot rv?

17 design differences between european and north american rvs.

RVs may be as American as apple pie, but other countries love recreational vehicles, too. You can find caravans in Australia and New Zealand, camper vans across Northern and Mediterranean Europe, and fang che in China. And, of course, you can find many RVs within our North American neighbors, Canada and Mexico.

Outside of the U.S., the most popular RVing destination in the world is Europe. If you’re planning an eye-opening cultural pilgrimage across Europe, what should you expect? And what are the differences between American RVs and European motorhomes?

If you’re just curious about the differences in the lifestyle, check out this firsthand account of a yearlong motorhome journey across Europe. But if you’re also curious about the rigs themselves, then read on!

European RV Classes Are Different

There are no “RVs” in Europe. That’s not a term they use. Instead, they make caravans and motorhomes. And don’t talk about “Class C’s” and “travel trailers.” People will just look at you like you’re weird.

Instead, Europeans refer to motorhomes as alcove motorhomes, semi-integrated motorhomes, or integrated motorhomes. That’s roughly similar to our Class C, Class B, and Class A motorhomes – but much more compact!

north american travel trailer

Travel trailers are called caravans. 5th wheels are very rare but don’t have a special moniker.

If you’re in a non-English-speaking country, they have their own names, but I can’t pronounce them. Germany calls a Class B a Kastenwagen, for instance, and a Class C is a Teilintegriert.

You should know most European motorhomes are built on the Mercedes Benz Sprinter, AL-KO Aluminum, or Fiat Ducato chassis. You don’t see the huge Freightliner, Ford or Spartan truck chassis.

They’re Drop-Dead Gorgeous

We Americans design RVs like we cook our hamburgers. And the recipe hasn’t changed much in 50 years. We’re still stuck in the browns, grays, ochres, and other earth tones of the 1970s. Even our attempts at modern design look more like a Hilton lobby than a super-modern RV.

The European RV manufacturers have left us in the dust, plain and simple. Just take a look at these pictures. You’ll see. Soft-close drawer slides, dimmable ambient lighting, curved edge-banded furniture, automotive-grade upholstery … pure poetry. As you can tell, I’m quite jealous!

What you DON’T find are 10-cent drawer latches that won’t latch, vinyl-coated OSB “hardwood,” giant gaps filled with caulk … yuck …

As an engineer, I appreciate their motivation to squeeze out every cubic foot – er, every cubic meter – they can find. You’ll find hidden storage cubbies under steps, beneath dinettes, in recessed overheads, and lots of storage in the “garage” area!

north american travel trailer

Can You Drive a Stick?

It’s all diesel and manual gearboxes over there! While you’ll find some high-end motorhomes with automatic transmissions, Europeans still rely on stick shifts for just about everything: cars, trucks, and RVs.

Also, most engines run on diesel, not gas. You’ll learn to love ‘em. You get massive low-end torque and excellent fuel economy. Unfortunately, fuel costs twice as much …

Smaller – Shorter Length

Everything is more compact in Europe. France is smaller than Texas. Restaurant portions are smaller. And the RVs are literally half the size of their American counterparts!

north american travel trailer

This is for many reasons:

  • European roads are MUCH smaller and twistier
  • “Wild camping” is available throughout much of Europe, especially the UK
  • Road regulations are MUCH stricter, such as maximum weight and length
  • Fuel costs MUCH more, so extra weight is very expensive!

The average European RV, whether motorhome or caravan, is about 18-23 feet in length. A 24-ft (8-meter) motorhome is a very popular size for a medium/large Class C/Class A RV.

Anything over 24 feet is considered very large and won’t be able to navigate all roads or campgrounds. You virtually never see motorhomes longer than 30 feet.

Smaller – Narrower Waist

You won’t find gas-guzzling Class A’s or Super C’s motoring about on European roads. Motorhomes and caravans are much narrower than American RVs , usually between 82-90 inches. That’s not much wider than a standard SUV or truck passenger vehicle!

Many European countries limit the maximum vehicle width on any road to about 2.5 meters, which is just over 8 feet. So wide-body RVs, at 102 inches, would be illegal on most of the continent!

Less Cargo Capacity

In Europe, you can’t just buy a vehicle half the size of a semi truck and timidly pilot it onto the open road. A normal Category B license is good for up to 3.5 metric tons (tonnes) GVWR. That’s about 7,700 lbs for you metrically-challenged folks.

So almost all European motorhomes are limited to about 7,700 lbs total weight. And if you tow a camper trailer, your total weight can’t exceed 7,700 lbs total weight.

That includes the weight of the unit and anything you add to it, like water or cargo! You need to carefully calculate the available cargo capacity left over!

And don’t forget – the weight restrictions mean you generally can’t tow a “toad” or “dinghy” vehicle behind a motorhome unless you have a special license!

No Slides or Expansions

It’s estimated only 2-3 percent of European motorhomes have slides. They’re just not a thing over the pond. As we Americans know, slides allow heat to leak out and water to leak in, neither of which Europeans will put up with. Plus, with such tight weight restrictions, European OEs aren’t in a hurry to add a few hundred pounds of hardware.

Slides are slowly making inroads into the market. You can find them in some manufacturers, like Adria. But as of now, they are not a desired feature.

north american travel trailer

Better 4-Season Insulation

As I’ve written about before, North American RV manufacturers really stretch the truth when it comes to their insulation R-value claims.

north american travel trailer

In Europe, they actually have a standard for measuring insulation! It’s EN-1646-1. RVs are rated as Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3, with Grade 3 being the highest performance.

Somewhat confusingly, the standard has different criteria for caravans versus motorhomes. Caravans are rated by their cold-weather insulation, and motorhomes are rated by their heating performance.

Here are the grade heating requirements for motorhomes in the UK. Rules for caravans are actually somewhat stricter!

  • Grade 1 means the heating has not been rated. The RV is designed for seasonal use.
  • Grade 2 heating will achieve 20 °C (68 F) inside when it is 0 °C (32 F) outside.
  • Grade 3 heating will achieve 20°C (68 F) inside when it is -5°C (23 F) outside and also requires that the fresh (but not waste) water supply must operate when it is -15°C (5 F) outside.

European travelers really care about their insulation (as they should, since they don’t have air conditioners). The thickness and type of insulation is often leveraged as a selling point.

Less Rugged Chassis Design

In America, we joke about our long dries, bad roads, and even worse weather (you either joke about it, or you cry about it).

But because of our rugged road conditions, we design chassis built for the long haul. Even though our leaf spring or t orsion axle suspensions are rather utilitarian, they last a long time.

And most RV manufacturers pay attention to things like ground clearance and approach/departure angles. In places where an European RV would bog down or scrap the ground, a North American RV would cruise through. European RVs tend to be a lot lower to the ground.

On-Demand Water Heaters Are In Demand!

Here in the U.S., a 6-gallon water heater and a propane-powered furnace come standard on most RVs. Larger motorhomes might have a 10-gallon water heater.

In Europe, tankless (or instant) water heaters are more common. And in fact, you might even see a hydronic heating system like the Alde (popularized in the U.S. via NuCamp travel trailers). You also might found a combo furnace/water heater option like the Truma Combi, popularized in the U.S. in Winnebago Class B vans.

Get Used to Cassette Toilets

Most European caravans and RVs don’t have a conventional onboard black tank. They use a cassette toilet (which I talk about quite a bit here!).

Essentially, a cassette toilet is a permanent toilet with a removable black tank. You open an access door in the side of the unit, slide out the black tank, and roll the tank to the dump station.

north american travel trailer

As you can imagine, these tanks are much smaller than the 20, 30, or 40-gallon waste tanks common on American RVs. Somewhere between 4 and 5 gallons is standard.

Obviously, that won’t last long if you’re full-timing, but you can always buy a backup tank! Or empty your small cassette toilet tank into a portable “blue boy” for future disposal.

If that sounds gross to you … it’s really not. Most campers get used to them in a few days and find out they’re no big deal. Try one and find out for yourself!

Side note: Because most European rigs have portable tanks, there are very few full hookup (FHU) sites. Most sites have water, some electric, but very few have a private dump station.

Generators Not Welcomed

Generators are heavy, noisy, and smelly, and Europeans don’t like any of those things.

Many camping locations in Europe either restrict or outright ban the use of fossil fuel-powered generators. You’ll only find them on caravan or motorhome campers dedicated to wild camping, which is what the Brits call “boondocking.”

And remember, US and European generators and appliances aren’t compatible! Most European countries use 50Hz 230V AC power; the US grid uses 60Hz 240V/120V AC power. The two are not compatible. Even if you have an adapter, some appliances cannot operate on 50Hz frequency.

P.S. Europeans don’t call electricity from the electric grid “shore power,” which is a term the RV industry borrowed from the nautical world. They call it mains power.

No Air Conditioners

Europe, as a whole, eschews air conditioning. To be honest, this is something we Americans could learn from! Air conditioning is a major energy hog and climate polluter. Will we really melt into a puddle if the mercury reaches 80 degrees?

So you won’t find air conditioning in most RVs, although some manufacturers offer rooftop or under-bench units as options.

If you do spring for the option, expect to pay up! Portable RV air conditioners in Europe are much, much nicer than typical North American units.

The big names in European RV air conditioning are:

  • Airxcel Coleman-Mach

It’s not uncommon to see features like soft-start capacitors, heat pump capability, noise insulation, and high-efficiency compressors. They are quieter and more efficient than what we’re used to.

However, going without air conditioning isn’t as awful as it sounds.

  • European RVs generally have much better insulation, so you won’t endure as drastic of temperature swings.
  • And the more mild climate of Mediterranean Europe lends itself to al fresco living.
  • You get twice as many skylights and roof fans to increase ventilation.

Inverters Are Rare

In Europe, most rigs run simply off of 12V DC power. (In America, our RVs have several appliances that require 120V AC power, such as the microwave and air conditioner).

So RV inverters are rarely standard, although most manufacturers offer them as optional equipment. This is changing, though, since many household appliances require 240V AC power (remember, this is Europe, so no 120V power!).

Solar Comes Standard

If you’re bummed out about the lack of generators, take heart! Solar power comes standard on most European RVs.

And we’re not just talking about run-of-the-mill 100-watt solar panels. You can easily find camper vans with 300, 500, even 1000-watt systems!

These solar panels recharge your batteries, allowing you to dry camp wherever you want! You can run your water pump, TV, lights, and (unlike the U.S.) even most appliances.

north american travel trailer

Most new European RVs either have solar power or come pre-wired. This means the rig comes equipped with a solar controller and solar wires running from the battery, to the charge controller, to a roof-accessible location. All you need to do is purchase and connect the panels themselves.

Propane Gas Bottles Aren’t Interchangeable

There is no central propane company in Europe. For that matter, even the mixture of propane and butane in a bottle varies by country and by season!

Many countries have their own “standard” portable propane bottles. You can’t substitute a Spanish tank for a German tank, for instance.

There are four LPG adapters (also known as “nozzles) in Europe:

  • Euroconnector

north american travel trailer

The dish connector is most popular, followed by the ACME and bayonet nozzles, tied for second. The Euroconnector is currently only available in Spain and Portugal.

Thankfully, you can buy an adapter for different types! Do yourself a favor and buy the adapters before you arrive in the country.

Meet The Garage!

The hallowed “garage” is a gigundous storage compartment beneath most European motorhomes. It’s in the area we would call the “basement,” but the garage is often underneath the interior bed.

It can be 4-5 feet tall! You can fit in bicycles, scooters, luggage, skis, an extra fridge, whatever you fancy. Most of the time, the garage is a pass-through compartment. Everyone loves it.
