Philadelphia International Airport Map

PHL consists of 7 terminals — A-West, A-East, B, C, D, E, and F. The terminals are connected in a line, so passengers can walk from Terminal A-West right through to Terminal F if they need to.

The airport is conveniently laid out so that all of the terminals are accessible from the road for curbside pick-up/drop-off and access to ground transportation, including SEPTA train stations (detailed information under Transport Options ).

PHL has a unique layout in its positioning of departures and arrivals, in which most airports are usually situated on different floors of the same building. At PHL, departures is in the main terminal building and baggage claim is across the road .

This may encourage a good flow of passenger traffic, but can be a little inconvenient if you need to collect your luggage for an onward connection.

Terminal A-West

Philadelphia International Airport Terminal A West

A-West is the main international terminal for the likes of British Airways, Qatar Airways, and Lufthansa, but also operates some domestic flights.

The terminal has 13 gates numbered A14 to A26 which are situated on level 2 . The international arrivals area (level 3) and baggage claim (level 1) is shared with Terminal A-East.

A-West has 2 security checkpoints — 1 at either end of the ticketing area on level 2 — and a good selection of shops and restaurants. Level 2 has a British Airways Galleries Lounge and Centurion Lounge for eligible passengers.

Hot Tip: We’ve detailed everything you need to know about the Centurion Lounge at PHL , including hours, amenities, restrictions, access, and how to make the most of your visit.

  • Terminal A-East

Philadelphia International Airport Terminal A East 1

Terminal A-East has it’s own ticketing area, bridge to parking garage A, and a SEPTA train station . International and domestic flights operate from Terminal A-East, and it shares its arrival facilities and baggage claim with Terminal A-West .

Ticketing is located on level 1 for American Airlines with 1 security checkpoint directly above.

A-East has 12 gates numbered A2 to A4, A6, A6a, A7, and A9 to A13 and several shops, restaurants, and cafes. Near gate A4, there is an American Airlines Admirals Club.

Terminals B and C

Philadelphia International Airport Terminal B-C

American Airlines operates flights from Terminal A-East and is the sole occupant of Terminals B and C for domestic and international flights . The terminals share a ticketing area and baggage claim and have 2 concourses — B and C.

The terminals have 2 security checkpoints above either end of the ticketing area  that provide convenient access to Concourse B or C.

Outside of the secure area, 2 bridges lead to the Marriott Hotel and parking garages. Both bridges have SEPTA train stations for easy connections to the city.

Concourse B has 15 gates numbered B1 to B11 and B13 to B16, and Concourse C also has 15 gates numbered C17 to C31. Both concourses have a good selection of shops and restaurants, with more along the connector between the 2 concourses. The connector also has an American Airlines Admirals Club.

Philadelphia International Airport Terminal D

Flights throughout the U.S. and Canada operate from Terminal D, by Alaska, Air Canada, Delta, Spirit, Sun Country, and United. Ticketing is located on level 1 along with baggage claim across the ground transportation area.

Terminal D shares a security checkpoint with Terminal E , located within the connector between the 2 terminals.

Concourse D has 16 gates numbered D1 to D16, along with a good selection of bars, cafes, and a Delta Sky Club .

Philadelphia International Airport Terminal E

Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, and Spirit operate from Terminal E’s 16 gates numbered E1 to E16. Ticketing is located on level 1, along with baggage claim across the ground transportation area.

A bridge connects the terminal to the parking garage, and from the bridge, passengers can access the SEPTA train station.

Terminal E shares a security checkpoint with Terminal D , in addition to a range of shops and restaurants in the terminal connector.

Philadelphia International Airport Terminal F

Terminal F has 37 gates numbered F1 to F9, F11 to F35, and F37 to F39 , with American Eagle and Contour serving North American flights.

Terminal F has 1 security checkpoint on the same level (1) as the ticketing area , and this leads through to a concourse with gates F1 to F9.

2 other concourses branch off from the central concourse area, which also houses a good selection of shops and restaurants, along with an American Airlines Admirals Club.

Inter-terminal Transport

Terminal shuttle bus.

Free shuttle buses operate between Terminals A-East and F and between Terminals C and F . These run inside the secure area, so there’s no need to re-clear security on arrival at the next terminal.

These are the locations of the shuttle stops:

  • Terminal A-East , in the connector to Terminal B
  • Terminal C , in the connector to Terminal D
  • Terminal F , from the central concourse area

PHL has a handy layout with all of the terminals accessible by foot . If you’re prepared to go the distance, then the walk from the 2 furthest points (Terminal A-West to Terminal F) is around 1.3 miles (approximately 30 minutes).

Passengers can freely walk between all terminals, which is particularly handy for long flight connections to make use of the facilities at another terminal.

PHL’s security checkpoints are open during these hours:

  • Terminal A-West : 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Terminal A-East : 4 a.m to 8:20 p.m.
  • Terminal B : 3:30 a.m to 9:15 p.m.
  • Terminal C : 4:30 a.m to 8 p.m. (TSA PreCheck only)
  • Terminal D/E : 3:45 a.m to 11:15 p.m.
  • Terminal F : 6 a.m to 9:20 p.m.

If arriving on an international flight, passengers are required to pass through immigration, collect luggage, and clear customs before connecting to an onward flight.

TSA PreCheck

There are dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes at the Terminal C and D/E security checkpoints. Approved passengers can utilize this service for expedited security clearance.

Know Before You Go

The airport serves as a hub for American Airlines, but other carriers with a large presence at the airport include  Delta Air Lines , Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. It has seven terminals with 126 gates along with four runways and serves domestic and international destinations. All the terminals are connected, so although there is a shuttle you can take, it's also possible to walk.

Philadelphia International Airport has spent more than $2 billion in capital improvements since 2000. The airport is in a state of constant renovation, but you can check out some of the latest project updates .

Airport Parking

The Philadelphia International Airport has six parking garages , one Economy Lot, and also the AAdvantage Aviator Lot, which offers discounted parking rates exclusively for American Airlines members with a certain level of status. The Economy Lot is cheaper and further away from the terminals than the airport's garages, but a complimentary shuttle is available to bring you to the terminal and operates 24/7. If you are just picking someone up from the airport and don't plan on getting out of your car, you can wait for free in the Cellphone Waiting Lot until you get a call or text from your passenger.

There are also a number of private companies, like Winner Parking or Pacifico Airport Valet, that offer valet services if you'd rather not deal with the shuttle buses at the airport.

Driving Directions

From the city center, Philadelphia International Airport is conveniently accessible by I-95, I-76 and Route 291. If coming from the New Jersey Turnpike, take Exit 3 to the Walt Whitman Bridge and follow signs for the airport. From the Pennsylvania Turnpike, take Route 476 to I-95 North until you reach the airport exit.

Public Transportation and Taxis

Taxi services can be accessed at Zone 5 on the Commercial Transportation Roadway. Taxi rates are based per trip, not per person. Sedan and Limousine services can be accessed at Zone 6 and shared-ride van services can be accessed at Zone 7 on the Commercial Transportation Roadway.

To travel by public transportation to Downtown Philadelphia, you can take the SEPTA Airport Regional by accessing the platform via a pedestrian walkway from the terminal. Trains leave every 30 minutes and make stops at Terminals E, C/D, and A-East before continuing to Eastwick, University City, 30th Street Station, Suburban Station, and Jefferson (Market East).

You can also take bus routes 37 (to/from South Philadelphia), 108 (to/from 69th Street Transportation Center) and 115 (to/from Suburban Square in Ardmore).

Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft are also available from the Philadelphia Airport. Meet your driver at Zone 7.

Where to Eat and Drink

If you arrive at PHL hungry, you can count on the airport's plentiful food options . For a sit-down meal, you'll find restaurants like Baba Bar and Noobar. You can also try some brews at Germantown Biergarten or the hometown favorite Yards Brewing Company. For something different, check out the retro-inspired Bud & Marilyns, the airport outpost of Philadelphia's favorite Midwestern restaurants. In Terminal D, you can grab a drink at Bar Symon.

Where to Shop

For those forgotten items you might need for your flight such as travel pillows, gum, and snacks, PHL has plenty of Hudson News stores, as well as the Duty-Free shops located in Terminals A and D, and stores for purchasing merchandise from Philadelphia sports teams and souvenirs.

How to Spend Your Layover

If you have a layover of seven hours or longer, that's just enough time to get out of the airport and enjoy some sights in Philadelphia . You can take the SEPTA Airline train to the city center and explore some of the city's most famous landmarks on foot. All within walking distance of the train station, you can make stops at the Liberty Bell, the Museum of the American Revolution, and still have time to run up the 72 steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, also known as "The Rocky Steps." Unfortunately, there are no luggage storage facilities available at the airport, so you'll need to bring your carry-on with you.

If you have an overnight layover, there are no hotels available inside the airport, but you could take a cab to one of the nearby airports like the Philadelphia Airport Marriott or the Extended Stay America Philadelphia Airport.

Airport Lounges

There are some lounges at the Philadelphia Airport that are members-only, like the Centurion Lounge and Delta Sky Club. However, if you are flying on American Airlines or United, you might be able to buy a day pass into one of those lounges. For active and retired military (and their traveling companions), there is a free USO Lounge located in Terminal A near Gate A6.

Just want some peace and quiet? Minute Room is available between terminals A and B. These private suites can be rented by the hour, perfect for squeezing a quick nap before your flight.

Wi-Fi and Charging Stations

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport and at the gates, you'll find charging stations to plug in your devices. You could also take a visit to the food court in Terminal B where there are tables with tablets for ordering food and an outlet at every seat.

Airport Tips and Tidbits

  • Among the unusual services offered at Philadelphia International Airport include  Art at the Airport . The art program features a series of rotating exhibits.
  • A partnership program between Autism Inclusion Resources LLC , and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), as well as participating airlines, help families with autistic children become familiar and comfortable with traveling through Philadelphia International Airport.
  • Pet relief areas, also called "Pet Ports," can be found in every terminal.
  • Take advantage of the airport's Virtual Library , accessible by a Wi-Fi hot spot in Terminals D and E. Simple connect to the free Wi-Fi signal and use it to access e-books and podcasts courtesy of the Free Library of Philadelphia.

How to Travel Between Terminals A and F at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)

Last Updated: May 17, 2021

wikiHow is a “wiki,” similar to Wikipedia, which means that many of our articles are co-written by multiple authors. To create this article, volunteer authors worked to edit and improve it over time. This article has been viewed 67,685 times. Learn more...

If you have a connecting flight inside of Philadelphia International Airport's Terminal A when your flight came into terminal F (or vice-versa), you may find that the approximate fifteen-minute [1] X Research source (which may seem to take a lot longer than most say) walk from end to end won't get you to your gate at the other terminal in time to make it for a connecting flight. However, with the help of the information contained in this wikiHow guide, you will stand a better chance of making it to your next flight on-time.

Using the Shuttle (Preferred by Airport Agents)

Step 1 Arrive at either of the two Terminals - A (East or West) or F.

  • Terminal A contains long-range flights (international and coast-to-coast flights) containing big jumbo-jets. In contrast, Terminal F contains shorter more-regional (American Eagle) flights that don't last very long and aren't very big. There's still an occasional US Airways plane that is still on-site that won't leave, and some older paint schemed American planes still have the US Airways logo to some minimal locations departing Terminal F.

Step 2 Locate both ends of the shuttle stop on the map.

Please Consider This : Getting the free American Airlines app and free AAdvantage account and turning on real-time location tracking will allow you to see your position on the Terminal apps available inside the app for any airport they have - Philadelphia International is listed - and will "get you to these locations."

Step 3 Walk to one of these entrances.

  • If you need help getting down the shuttle entrance near Terminal A and have handicapped accessibility issues, ask a terminal attendant, and they should be able to help assist you in the best way possible. Sometimes, a golfcart-like vehicle travels the airport to pick up and drop-off disabled passengers on the ticketed side on an on-call basis if directed by airline employees.
  • Passengers at the farthest end of Terminal A-West (terminals A17-A26, may want to consider alternate forms of movement to propel them to the shuttle stop closest to them

Step 4 Find out what time the shuttle leaves.

  • American Airlines representatives (this is a regional hub airport for them) may be approached for schedule times and might know where the shuttle is when you are at a gate inside one of these terminals.

Step 5 Exit out the door.

  • Latecomers will often be denied exit until the next shuttle bus arrives - making some other passengers late to their connecting flight.

Step 6 Get on the bus.

  • There are a few seats, but the majority of the space is standing room spots, and unless there aren't many people, you may be forced to stand.
  • The bus stands a few inches off the ground, but explaining the problems to the driver, for those handicapped, you may end up showing them you need help from them (or the bus) to get on.

Step 7 Let the shuttle take you to the opposite terminal.

Walking the Route (Not Preferred and Longer)

Step 1 Realize that there...

  • This article's details are written as taken from Terminal F to Terminal A - seems to be the easiest route and most beneficial. For those coming from Terminal A, you might want to read the description from bottom to top and reverse directions left with right and right with left.

Step 2 Find your gate at Philadelphia International Airport.

  • Don't walk past the TSA exit to Baggage Claim, though. You are not exiting out to Baggage Claim to get to Terminal A, and you must follow directions here to a T. You are only to walk the direction of the Baggage Claim signs. The walkway path you need is still on the Gates side of the TSA, and you will need a ticket to get there.
  • The mall-like plaza contains a conference room, a coat, and luggage room (for temporary storage), a workroom, a bar, and a set of bathrooms.

Step 3 Travel up the escalators or stairs as you near the main concourse walkway connecting the gates.

  • The map on the American Airlines app looks a bit confusing in this respect. Escalators aren't marked in the app but only exist in Terminal F near the exit onto the main walkway concourse. Terminal F sits lower into the ground than other terminals, though viewing it from afar looks deceiving. If there are no escalators/stairs, things do change regularly, and they might have been removed with other forms of transport to get you to the main concourse walkway.

Step 4 Take a left and walk down the walkway between Terminals.

  • For those walking from Terminal A-East or A-West, you'll want to look for the path leading to gates D-F by reading signs and following the arrows.

Step 8 Be careful of

  • You will find your first charging station (if necessary) right outside of Brooks Brothers and Tumi with another one near Soma and the all-caps Mac.

Step 9 Be careful as you reach Terminal B.

Warning : If you choose to walk the entire route (and have time), make sure to download the American Airlines app and create (or log into) your AAdvantage account so you can access the airport map, as there are many tricky spots along the route.

Traveling through PHL this summer? Here’s what to know.

How to avoid headaches due to cancellations, delays, crowded check-in and TSA lines, and more when you're flying from PHL this summer

Here's what to know when navigating Philadelphia International Airport this summer.

Summer air travel in 2022 was defined by nationwide flight cancellations, delays, long TSA lines, and understaffed airports. As people plan their vacations, they may be wondering if summer 2023 will bring the same issues.

According to Charlie Leocha, co-founder of the consumer advocacy group Travelers United, you can count on delayed flights being a regular occurence, but “it should not be as bad as it was last summer.”

Although the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) doesn’t expect the number of travelers to be back to pre-pandemic levels until 2025, an increase in passengers is expected compared to 2022. To prevent understaffing issues, they are looking to fill over 70 positions , including bus drivers, mechanics, and servers, said PHL spokesperson Heather Redfern.

But delays are unavoidable. Weather and medical emergencies can easily put a hold on your summer vacation. So, if you are looking to fly this summer, you may need to pack some patience and arrive early.

Here are some tips on how to make traveling through PHL as smooth as possible:

When is it best to fly from PHL?

Monday-Thursday, as early as possible.

Leocha recommends flying as early as possible, before 9 a.m. That gives you a higher chance of your plane being already at the airport, and because not a lot of people fly that early, the lines for check-in and TSA tend to move faster.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are the busiest days to fly from PHL, and Terminals D and E tend to be the busiest on those days. So if you’re flying Air Canada, Alaska, Delta, Frontier, Jet Blue, Southwest, Spirit, United, or Sun Country, you probably want to give yourself even more time than you think you’ll need, especially if you have to check-in at the airport or check a bag.

How early should I arrive at PHL?

At least three to four hours before an international flight, and at least 2.5 to 3 hours earlier if you’re flying domestic.

To avoid getting stuck in line and missing your flight, PHL recommends you get to the airport between two and a half to three hours before domestic flights, and at least three to four hours before international flights. That’s the average time you might need to check your luggage, pass security filters and get through checkpoints.

Although PHL has 1,850 parking spots in the economy lot , and a free parking lot for people picking up arriving passengers , you should expect traffic. Don’t try “hopping in the car or taking an Uber two hours before your flight,” says TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein.

Checking a bag at PHL

Travel with a carry-on only, if possible

Leocha recommends avoiding checking a bag if you can. Traveling with a carry-on to avoid check-in lines can save you about 40 to 45 minutes.

At PHL, traveling with a carry-on only may save you even more time. Because the airport is fully connected, you can go through security in one terminal and walk to another, which allows you to choose the shortest line. (The exception: You can’t go through security at Terminal C unless you have TSA PreCheck.) If you check a bag, you have to do it at the terminal you’re flying from.

TSA PreCheck at PHL

If you don’t have TSA PreCheck , it may be worth getting.

TSA PreCheck can speed up your airport process considerably, and can be useful if you travel often. Only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and lawful permanent residents can apply. Enrolling costs $78, and processing times can take between three to 90 days, but it lasts for five years.

At PHL, Terminals D and E offer TSA PreCheck, in addition to the regular security screening; Terminal C is PreCheck only.

PHL COVID-19 restrictions

You don’t need to wear a mask.

The federal mask mandate for airports and planes was lifted last spring, but masks were still recommended at PHL. In 2023, the airport is leaving the decision to the passengers. You can still ask for a free mask at any PHL entry point.

For international travelers, COVID-19 restrictions and policies can vary depending on your destination. Remember to check the mask, rapid test, and vaccine requirements of the place you are visiting before traveling — especially because the airport no longer offers on-site testing.

While the Biden administration announced the public health emergency declaration for Covid-19 will end in May, PHL stopped offering the screening service to travelers in December 2022 due to a decrease in testing demand.

Be patient and check for updates

Although the airport is seeking to fill staff, they don’t control airline operations or determine when a flight is delayed. It’s a good idea to check the status of your flight at phl.org or on your airline’s app before you head to the airport.

What to do if your flight is delayed or canceled

Leocha suggests figuring out what options your airliner offers for delayed flights. “If you don’t ask, you may not get any help,” Leocha said. He recommends checking the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Airline Customer Service Dashboard .

This resource puts all U.S airlines in one place for both fee-free family seating, cancellations, and delays policies. “It gives you a guide approved by every airline for the first time,” Leocha added.

The dashboard can help you figure out if your flight carrier offers any accommodations when delays within the airline’s control happen, including rebooking, meals, hotels, and refunds.

Airlines such as American, Alaska, Delta, JetBlue, and United offer rebooking at no additional cost, meals if your flight is delayed longer than three hours, and hotel and ground transportation for overnight delays.

This Airport Now Has the Shortest TSA Wait Times in the U.S.

Discover which u.s. airport now boasts the shortest tsa wait times for travelers..

tsa airport security

Traveling by air is for the most part convenient, but it can also be massively stressful. Long lines, bad food, grumpy passengers, short-tempered airport staff, endless delays and cancellations, and if you’re really unlucky, a computer shutdown that grounds every plane indefinitely so you’re stuck. Not all airports are the same, however: If you happen to travel to, from, or through certain locations you may have a much more pleasant experience. The team at PlanetWare analyzed which airports have the shortest security wait times and the most flights taking off on schedule. Here are the 10 busiest airports in the U.S. with the shortest wait times, ranked from longest to the best.

10. Austin-Bergstrom International

AUS has an average wait time of 11.4 minutes. This Texas airport reiterates how important it is to be timely when traveling by air. “As many of us know, Labor Day is not just one extra day off to relax. If my 'American math' is correct, that one extra day equals an extended weekend,” says the (very humorous) Fly Aus Blog . “An extended weekend equals the perfect opportunity to travel and get that vacation you’ve been longing for. One thing that we at the Austin Airport have noticed is that when American math occurs, everybody and their momma hops on a flight. So, we want to prepare our travelers for a bustling terminal with the best travel tips around Central Texas. If you’re not early, you’re late – Arrive Early!” Well said.

9. Harry Reid International Airport

Las Vegas’ airport handles millions of travelers every year, and does it well—the average wait time is just 11 minutes. The airport has designated walking paths through the airport to encourage movement in a timely manner . “Fly Fit encourages airport fitness by sharing with travelers convenient walking paths throughout our terminals. Walk a mile (or a little more or less) by following one of the routes on the overview map. Paths range from approximately one-half to 1.5 miles in length, located in both secure and nonsecure areas.”

8. Nashville International

Nashville International has an average wait time of 10.8 minutes, and is actively preparing for a busier future with the New Horizon construction and renovation plan. “When we broke ground on BNA® Vision, our goal was to expand the infrastructure of BNA to better support Nashville’s impressive growth trajectory over the next 20 years. The passenger volume we’ve seen at Nashville International Airport continues to outpace our previous projections, which is a great sign for our city, but it also means that we have to continue building for the future,” says Doug Kreulen, president and CEO of BNA . “It’s paramount for us to focus on a new horizon and continue to build a world-class airport to support more and more domestic and international travelers.”

7. John F. Kennedy International

John F. Kennedy airport is going through significant construction work as part of a $19 billion overhaul, yet is still getting people through in a timely manner. “Due to expected construction-related roadway congestion and potential AirTrain station closures, allow extra time for travel,” the airport advises .

6. Minneapolis-Saint Paul International

This busy airport has an average wait time of 10 minutes, and is undergoing a significant expansion. “Work has started on a 168,000-square-foot expansion of Terminal 2 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), helping to accommodate increasing passenger demand,” the airport announced. “The Terminal 2 North Expansion project will add two airline gates and additional passenger seating for two existing gates, H13 and H14. New restrooms and concessions space are also included. The work is set to be completed in early 2027.”

5. Miami International

Miami International has an average wait time of 10.4 minutes, and is used to handling large amounts of passengers. “Founded in 1928, MIA is America’s busiest airport for international freight and second busiest for international passengers, offers more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other U.S. airport, and boasts a lineup of over 90 air carriers,” the airport proudly explains .

4. Philadelphia International

Never mind the fantastic 9.2-minutes average wait time—did you know Philadelphia International literally has sweet pups on site just for petting and de-stressing during travel? “Walk through PHL’s terminals and you’ll find a variety of canines on duty—from passengers’ service and support dogs to the TSA’s K-9 team,” the airport says . “While guests can’t pet these working dogs, they are encouraged to interact with the PHL Wagging Tails Brigade. These friendly furry dogs roam the terminals with their handlers, providing guests with a calming environment in what may be a stressful traveling journey.”

3. Phoenix Sky Harbor International

Phoenix Sky Harbor has an average wait time of 7.8 minutes, and announced plans earlier this year for a brand new terminal. “Phoenix Sky Harbor is busier than ever, which is why we’ll soon need a new terminal to accommodate our growth,” says Mayor Kate Gallego . “To continue providing excellent customer experience at America’s Friendliest Airport, the Council and I are moving forward with plans to build a cutting-edge terminal at the airport’s west end. The new expansion is years in the making and I am looking forward to the continued work to turn our shared vision into reality.”

2. Detroit Metro Wayne County

DTW is proud to be the #1 airport in customer satisfaction (and with an average wait time of 7.1 minutes, almost #1 in shortest wait times! So close!). The airport has an interesting history: In 1943 107 Women Airforce Service Pilots ( WASPs ) were assigned to Romulus Army Air Field to ferry aircraft across the United States.

1. Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall

With an average wait time of just 5.1 minutes, BWI more than deserves its spot at the top of the list. It probably takes longer to get food inside the terminal than to go through security! Well done, Baltimore.

For the second week in a row, travelers spent hours waiting on bags, or on planes, after severe weather caused a mess at Philadelphia International Airport .

Philadelphia news 24/7: Watch NBC10 free wherever you are

NBC10 started getting multiple calls and emails from people Sunday night saying they were stuck on a plane or stuck in baggage claim waiting for their luggage to arrive.

Hundreds of flights were delayed at PHL Sunday and more than 150 flights were canceled. Many people told us they were told weather was to blame.

The delays meant some flight crews timed out -- meaning they couldn’t work any more hours because of federal regulations.

Passengers told us they were stuck sitting on a plane on the tarmac for hours -- with no food, water or immediate answers.

However, the big issue with a lot of travelers was that when they finally got off their planes their luggage didn’t get off with them.

"We still have not gotten our bags yet," a frustrated passenger said Sunday night. "No one is coming to talk to us, we haven't heard anything about what's going on with our luggage. And it's horrible. You hear them chanting, they's like 'free our bags!' Why won't they let us know where are our bags?"

As of early Monday morning, dozens of bags were lined up in baggage claim, many people with final destinations in Philadelphia having left them behind rather than continuing to wait. There were also dozens of carts of bags taken off canceled flights that would need to be claimed.

While most if not all airlines dealt with weather cancellations and delays, most of the people with the baggage confusion we talked to flew on American Airlines, which operates around 60% of PHL flights.

Later on Monday, American Airlines said that a four hour ramp closure due to lightning caused delays. Airline employees worked to assist customers and get crews into place.
