If a tour is cancelled less than 24 hours ahead NO REFUND will be provided.

You are responsible for arriving on time to your Toronto Private City Tour. The pickup vehicle will usually wait for a few minutes; however, if you arrive late and miss the tour, NO REFUND will be provided. ToNiagara will specify your pickup time and location through email.

If, for any reason your tour is cancelled (due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances), you will be notified as soon as possible and receive a FULL REFUND to your credit card or any other method of payment as applicable.

Rescheduling your tour to another date is free of charge subject to availability.

If you are switching to a less expensive tour, ToNiagara will refund the difference to your credit card.

In the rare event of a bus/vehicle breakdown all efforts will be made to continue the tour (another vehicle or vehicles may be sent to pick you up.) NO REFUND will be provided for any time lost on the tour or change in the passenger vehicle. If the tour is cancelled due to a bus/vehicle breakdown ToNiagara will provide a full refund.

The city is holding its annual Doors Open Toronto event this weekend, a program that lets people tour the city's most iconic places and peak behind the curtain.

Digital creator and architecture enthusiast Anne Vranic calls it the Olympics for her and other self-proclaimed history "nerds."

"Typically, I plan weeks in advance because it is a race," she told CBC Toronto. "I just get so excited because it's the architecture nerds' and the culture nerds' time to shine."

For the last 24 years, the annual event has given people free access to the city's historical buildings, unique landmarks and museums. This year there are over 160 sites and running theme is hidden histories and untold stories. 

"It helps keep history and heritage on people's radar," Doors Open Toronto's program lead Kristine Williamson told CBC Toronto. 

New sites and popular mainstays 

This year's lineup includes multiple new buildings, including the historic University Club of Toronto and the Redpath Sugar Plant.

Popular sites such as the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant, known as "the Palace of Purification," are also back on the map. The art deco marvel was constructed in 1932 and is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.

Plant manager Gordon Mitchell said last year there were a record 13,000 visitors during Doors Open. 

"It's a very beautiful spot on the lake. I'm very proud of our building and we like to maintain it," he said . 

Mitchell said this weekend will also provide a opportunity for people to learn about where their water comes from.

"They're curious about issues like fluoridation, lead in drinking water was a big issue a few years ago, so we like to reassure people that we have those issues well in hand."

Museums and interactive events

A number of museums in the city will also have free admission this weekend including the Aga Khan Museum, home to a vast collection of Islamic art.

"We exist to highlight the achievements and contributions of Muslim cultures and the way in which they're connected to everybody else," said Sascha Priewe, the director collections and public programs.

He said this weekend visitors can expect food, drink, performances and arts and crafts in the park.

Across the city at the Toronto Humane Society, tours will allow people to interact with animals while they learn about the organization's beginnings in 1887. 

It started with concern for the wellbeing of work horses and a $2-donation, said Lucas Solowey, Toronto Humane Society's manager of public relations.

"But as the organization grew, they also took on child welfare and animal welfare, so the organization's been working on a lot of issues for so many years," he said. 

Over a dozen neighbourhood tours will are also taking place, diving into local history, along with a series of talks by architects and urban designers.

Vranic says events like these help raise awareness about preserving Toronto's heritage. 

"Every time you open a newspaper, a building is at threat… and it really fills me with hope that that's people aren't taking that lying down. People are passionate about our buildings."

Rory McIlroy now says he has at least one regret in the ongoing PGA Tour-LIV Golf drama.

McIlroy, who had staunchly defended the PGA over the past few years after LIV’s separation, said he wishes he had handled things differently.

“I think, in hindsight, I wish I hadn’t have gotten involved or not hadn’t gotten involved, hadn’t have gotten as deeply involved in it, and I’ve articulated that,”  McIlroy said before the RBC Canadian Open, according to Golf Monthly, struggling to find the right words to describe his involvement in the issues between the leagues.

“But in hindsight, I wish I hadn’t have gotten as deeply involved as I have,” McIlroy admitted.

This stance was teased by his former agent Andrew “Chubby” Chandler in February when he mentioned that Mcllroy could consider a LIV Golf offer.

“Rory is of the ilk that he’ll say something because he likes to have an opinion, but he’s quite happy to apologize for it, and that’s what he’s done,” Chandler said then, according to Bunkered. “If you were being cynical, you might say he’s going to sign for about £750 million [around $950 million] in a month’s time with LIV because he’s paving the way that LIV’s okay now, whereas it wasn’t.”

McIlroy also added this week that he was disappointed by what the divide has done to the professional golf ranks, which has seen some of the game’s best players depart the PGA for LIV.

“My whole thing is I’m just disappointed to what it’s done to, not to the game of golf, the game of golf will be fine, but men’s professional golf and this sort of divide we have at the minute,” he said.

Mcllroy vehemently defended the PGA Tour during the 2021 separation before it agreed to a framework to merge with LIV last summer.

While many of his fellow golfers got rich taking the Saudi’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) money, Mcllroy stayed with the Tour while his play declined.

In January, though, McIlroy expressed some leniency and said he would be OK letting the LIV players come back to the PGA if they wanted to.

At the PGA Championship earlier this month, McIlory addressed the departure of Jimmy Dunne from the PGA Tour’s policy board, admitting it could be a big blow for the ongoing merger talks.

“Honestly, I think it’s a huge loss for the PGA Tour, if they are trying to get this deal done with the PIF [the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which runs LIV] and trying to unify the game,’’ McIlroy said, according to The Post’s Mark Cannizzaro. “Jimmy was basically the relationship, the sort of conduit between the PGA Tour and PIF.

“It’s been really unfortunate that he has not been involved for the last few months, and I think part of the reason that everything is stalling at the minute is because of that. So it is, it’s really, really disappointing. I think the Tour is in a worse place because of it.

“I would say my confidence level on something getting done before last week was as low as it had been, and then with this news of Jimmy resigning and knowing the relationship he has with the other side, and how much warmth there is from the other side, it’s concerning.’’

It’s been an eventful month for the No. 3 ranked golfer, who served his wife, Erica Stoll, divorce papers , stating that the marriage was “irretrievably broken.”

The papers did state that the two had signed a prenuptial agreement .

I paid $500 for a private room on a 30-hour Amtrak ride that came with 2 beds and a toilet. Take a look inside.

• I spent 30 hours in a sleeper car on an Amtrak train traveling from New York City to Miami in 2021.
• For $500, I stayed in a roomette , a private cabin with two beds, a toilet, and basic amenities.
• At around 20 square feet, I thought my cabin made impressive use of a tiny space.

In October 2021, I took my first overnight train journey from New York City to Miami. For the 30 hour-ride, I booked the cheapest private cabin I could — an Amtrak roomette for $500.

The 22.75-square-foot cabin had two beds, a toilet, and basic amenities. With clever storage hacks , I thought it felt like a tiny hotel room with no unused space.

To get to my private room, I walked along a narrow corridor that could only be used single file and crossed three sleeper cars.

Inside, I found two seats, a table, and a bed above the seats that pulled down. The seats also pulled out into a bed.

I thought this was a big step up from sitting in coach, where you get one train seat and sit with other passengers.

My roomette had a door and blinds to cover up the windows.

Across from the window was a sliding door that locked and curtains for privacy.

The room came with clever storage features that reminded me of a tiny home, like a pullout table between the chairs.

The table had two foldout leaves, too, for more counter space.

In some roomettes — mine included — a side table swings open to reveal a hidden toilet. Above it, I had a folding sink and mirror.

With no privacy curtain around the toilet, I was grateful to be a solo traveler.

Due to the availability when I booked my ticket, I had to switch partway through my trip to another roomette, which didn't have a toilet.

For that portion, I used a shared bathroom at the back of the sleeper car.

I was surprised by the roomette's variety of lighting options, which seemed to be more than what I'd get in economy on a flight.

I was also surprised to be able to control the temperature inside my roomette with a dial and air conditioning vents. I kept it cool, about 66 degrees Fahrenheit.

My ticket came with dinner, which I ate in the dining car.

For dinner, I had braised short ribs, mashed potatoes, and a hard roll. While I didn't love the meal as it came, I made a little sandwich out of the ingredients, which tasted better to me.

After dinner, I was ready to rest for the night. The roomette seats folded into a bed on the bottom level, and another bed came down from the ceiling that was suspended in the air.

I decided to try sleeping on the top bed. I thought the available blankets wrapped in plastic were surprisingly soft and comfortable.

While I found the train movement through the night to be a little unsettling, I appreciated the dim, blue light on the wall next to me. It was my favorite feature of the roomette because it reminded me of my colorful night light at home.

Even though I didn't sleep my best, I'm glad I went with the top bunk because of the blue light and the views I had in the morning.

Looking out the window reminded me that I was going somewhere exciting, and I thought it was a welcome distraction from the tight quarters.

Though the roomette started to feel small as I neared the full 30 hours in it, I thought it made impressive use of roughly 20 square feet.

After 30 hours in a roomette, I would book the accommodation again. But for those looking for more room to stretch out, I recommend the Amtrak bedroom .
