Queens of the Stone Age Cancel Remaining 2024 Shows After Josh Homme Surgery

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Queens of the Stone Age have canceled the remainder of their 2024 tour dates — including a string of North American shows and festival gigs scheduled for the fall — as Josh Homme continues his recovery from an unspecified surgery he underwent in July.

“QOTSA regret to announce the cancellation and/or postponement of all remaining 2024 shows. Josh has been given no choice but to prioritize his health and to receive essential medical care through the remainder of the year,” the band wrote on social media.

At that time, QOTSA’s North American shows remained on the schedule before they were ultimately nixed on Friday. “Josh and the QOTSA family are so thankful for your support and the time we were able to spend together over the last year. Hope to see you all again in 2025,” the band added Friday.

The group were touring in support of their latest album,  In Times New Roman … , which came out in 2023, the same year that Homme revealed that he’d previously undergone surgery to remove cancer .

Queens of the Stone Age, ‘…Like Clockwork’ – Album Review

Welcome back Queens of the Stone Age and all of their talented friends! It's been six years since the band last released 'Era Vulgaris,' and it's apparent that mastermind frontman Josh Homme hasn't lost his touch for fuzzed out amps blasting guitar rock. But the band's '…Like Clockwork' album also shows another side with a handful of moody, introspective piano-driven tracks that just add to the musical palette.

Though there has been plenty of buzz about '…Like Clockwork's' all-star contributors, the core four-piece has ample room to shine. The album opens with the darkly intoxicating opener 'Keep Your Eyes Peeled,' an experimental track with Homme offering falsetto as Scissor Sisters singer Jake Shears contributes backing vocals.

But things venture into more accessible territory with the standout track 'I Sat By the Ocean.' This traditional rocker features an infectious 'Good Times Roll' guitar lick and a swagger that just swings.

Songs like 'The Vampyre of Time and Money,' with Homme asking the question, "Does anyone ever get this right?," and the album ender '…Like Clockwork,' in which the singer's final words are, "One thing is clear, it's all downhill from here," show the band in a more introspective light, but with perhaps more honesty and insight than the listener has ever had with Queens prior.

Other standouts on the album include the over-the-top in a good way song 'Fairweather Friends,' with a guest list that includes Elton John , Trent Reznor , Mark Lanegan and Nick Oliveri . John's piano work and backing vocals definitely add something special to the track. 'If I Had a Tail' finds Arctic Monkeys ' Alex Turner and Lanegan and Oliveri sitting in, with Dave Grohl going heavy on the cymbals behind the kit. Meanwhile, the band has already enjoyed some success at radio with the hard-driving lead single 'My God Is the Sun,' which features an intriguing carnival-like breakdown toward the end.

Though the mood can turn a bit dark at times, there's no denying the passion in creation put toward this album by Homme, his bandmates and his musical pals. '…Like Clockwork' comes off as a timeless piece of music that would rock in any era.

Queens of the Stone Age Call Off Remaining 2024 Tour Dates, Issue Statement

Queens Of The Stone Age: ...Like Clockwork

Desert rock survivors return to form..

queens of the stone age like clockwork tour

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

The myth and majesty of QOTSA was always in their immortality. These Palm Desert legends could neck all of the grottiest drugs known to humanity in one snort with nary a tweak of the blood pressure, bludgeon the sturdiest canyon rock from their instruments for decades without ever tiring, and crush lesser rock bands between their fingers like crackers. They’d been rocking since the stone age, and they would rock until the next. Or so we, and they, thought.

Then in 2010 their mountain of a mainman Josh Homme briefly died on the operating table during routine surgery and was revived with a fresh perspective on his life and music. The subsequent sixth album, several years delayed by the mojo-losing effects of Homme’s months of recovery, is wracked with vulnerability, insecurity, pained defiance and pleas for direction, protection and the comfort of loved ones. ‘If life is but a dream then wake me,’ Homme growls on ominous, pounding opener Keep Your Eyes Peeled , before announcing on sultry piano ballad T he Vampyre Of Time And Memory , ‘I want God to come and take me home.’

‘Most everything you see, my dear, is purely for show,’ he admits on the title track. And I Appear Missing is Homme’s rawest lyric yet, exploring the trials he endured as he lost his musical drive in the recovery ward: ‘Pieces were stolen from me… The deeper I sleep the further down the rabbit hole, never to be found.’ ‘I survived, I speak, I breathe… I’m alive, hooray!’ he cries, but the wild times are over, and the hedonism that drove 2000’s Rated R and 2002’s Songs For The Deaf is gone.

Luckily, with it has also disappeared the Queens-by-numbers desert formulas that made Lullabies To Paralyze (2005) and Era Vulgaris (2007) sound like trod water. With a second chance at life comes a fresh urgency to grasp its possibilities. So, leaning on a host of rock pals for support (Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner, Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, estranged ex-bassist Nick Oliveri and Elton John), Homme varies his songbook to take in the insurrectionist poetry of If I Had A Tail , the psychedelic ventilator burbles of Kalopsia , the Muse squelches of Smooth Sailing and a beefed-up take on Blur’s Coffee And TV called I Sat By The Ocean .

Homme’s contributors are generally buried beneath his reborn sandstorm rock, although Elton emerging from the swarm of blustery demons on Fairweather Friend to howl the title is a moment of unintentional comedy. But their rejuvenating effects make this the most rounded and melodic QOTSA album in a decade, a triumph snatched from the mortuary doors.

Almost a month after canceling additional European tour dates following Josh Homme ‘s emergency surgery, Queens of the Stone Age has wiped the remaining 2024 tour dates from their schedule to prioritize Homme’s health.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the band shared its regrets in having to cancel or postpone all of their upcoming dates. “QOTSA regret to announce the cancellation and/or postponement of all remaining 2024 shows,” wrote the group. “Josh has been given no choice but to prioritize his health and to receive essential medical care through the remainder of the year.”

Now, the collective is postponing performances in Boston, Cincinnati, Chicago and Madison to 2025, and is altogether canceling festival appearances in Mexico City, Memphis and Bridgeport.

Though it’s unclear what type of surgery Homme underwent, he’s been open about his health struggles over the years. Last year, he shared that he’d been diagnosed with a form of cancer in 2022 and underwent surgery to have it removed.

In 2023, Queens of the Stone Age released “In Times New Roman…,” its first album in six years. Shortly after, the group announced The End is Nero tour for North America followed by a set of European dates. This year, the band scheduled dates in Australia and North America, as well as some of the European shows they had to cancel.

Album Review: Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork

queens of the stone age like clockwork tour

A little over a decade ago, Josh Homme - singer/guitarist/only consistent member of Queens of the Stone Age - broke out of the Palm Desert scene that birthed his first projects (including desert rock pioneers Kyuss and the ever-changing Desert Sessions) and into England with QOTSA's second album, Rated R , which was picking up steam in critical circles. More albums and tours followed swiftly afterward, firmly establishing Homme as a prolific and tireless creative force. But then, in late 2011, it all stopped. Nothing was heard from Homme until this past March, when the band announced ...Like Clockwork , QOTSA's sixth, self-produced full-length. A departure from the acerbic, furious rock that made him one of rock's biggest cult artists, ...Like Clockwork is a different kind of Queens record. Fifteen years after his breakthrough, the man whose first big song was just a list of narcotics is opening up on record and letting his guard down for the first time, resulting in Homme's - QOTSA or otherwise - strongest effort in some time. Named for a phrase used by the band to note the seemingly-scheduled chaos during the album’s recording sessions, ...Like Clockwork is Homme’s most personal work to date; it’s a record that fearlessly dissects its creator while revealing his tuneful heaviness to be as intact as ever.

In the six years since QOTSA's last album, 2007's Era Vulgaris , Homme reshuffled QOTSA's lineup (again), produced an Arctic Monkeys record, toured and recorded with Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones as Them Crooked Vultures, had his second child with wife Brody Dalle, toured behind a reissue of QOTSA's self-titled debut, and, last but not least, died. During a fairly standard surgery on his knee in 2010, Homme experienced complications, died for a moment, and then spent four bed-ridden months recovering. The last event has clearly left the biggest impact on ...Like Clockwork . Once rock's undisputed champion of sardonic one-liners, Homme's songwriting is atypically introspective on ...Like Clockwork . Confronted by mortality and fatherhood, Homme spreads all of his fears out on the table, laying his anxieties about death ("Keep Your Eyes Peeled", "Like Clockwork"), loneliness ("The Vampyre Of Time and Memory", "I Sat By The Ocean"), and the future ("Kalopsia") on the album. It wouldn't be unusual for say, Justin Vernon, to go to this borderline-confessional level of songwriting, but Homme is a towering, 6'4" guy who wrote A Song for the Dead. It's a big jump from the riff-heavy, face-melting rock that Queens is known for, but Homme pulls a near-Matt Berninger lever of vulnerability off with ease, harnessing his fear to create tracks both ferocious and gorgeous. (Case in point, ...Like Clockwork has not one, but two, piano-led ballads, and Homme slays them both.)

The other major event that shaped ...Like Clockwork is the return of Dave Grohl - who played on the band's 2002 masterpiece Songs For The Deaf - to the drummer's stool, replacing Joey Castillo, who acrimoniously departed the band late last year. Grohl’s drumming on …Like Clockwork is easily one of the album’s highlights, not only because it’s great to hear one of music’s greatest drummers back behind the skins after slaying arenas at his day job, but also because his chemistry with Homme drives the album’s best moments. The dark funk of “If I Had A Tail”, tension-filled charge of “My God Is The Sun”, and crashing crescendos of “I Appear Missing” are all filled with the kind of musical rapport that can only come from two already-great players who have spent plenty of time sharpening that bond. (In fact, 2009's Them Crooked Vultures is essentially an album where the two basically just showed off just how damn good they sound together.) It's not just Grohl who elevates Homme's songs though - Queens' current lineup is stronger than ever, as is Homme's usual who's who list of guests. The band's last two albums were primarily crafted by Homme, Castillo, and guitarist/keyboardist Troy Van Leeuwen, but Homme is now backed by Van Leewen, keyboardist/guitarist Dean Fertita, and bassist Michael Shuman, all of whom play distinct roles on ...Like Clockwork . Homme's guitar work is supplemented by a tasteful-yet-explosive rhythm section in Grohl and Shuman, while Fertita and Van Leeuwen's textural playing sets the stage for Homme's searing leads, which, along with the album's concise, ten-track running time, creates a much more cohesive and focused listen than the last two albums. ...Like Clockwork's guest roster is just as impressive: Elton John, Trent Reznor, former QOTSA members Mark Lanegan and Nick Oliveri, Arctic Monkeys leader Alex Turner, UNKLE's James Lavelle, and Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears all make contributions here. Although only a handful of them can be heard on the first listen, their seamless inclusion only builds the case that ...Like Clockwork is primarily a result of Homme's unwavering vision. The album's emotional centerpiece, the six-minute slow burn "I Appear Missing", serves as a showcase for all of Homme's talents. One of the best things Homme has put to tape in the last decade, "I Appear Missing" features lyrics that are bleak-yet-vivid ("A spitting image of me/except for the heart-shaped hole where the hope runs out), no fewer than three interlocking, multipart guitar breakdowns, and one of Homme's best-ever vocal performances, naturally transforming his sharp falsetto - which he usually only breaks out when he wants to get down - into a mournful coda. The track is a summation of all of Homme's strengths, and serves as ...Like Clockwork' s mission statement: despite all of the chaos that accompanied the album's recording sessions, "I Appear Missing" defiantly proclaims that Homme isn't not going away any time soon. At least, not without a fight.

Although his collaborators Grohl, Reznor, and Lanegan are among Homme's most celebrated contemporaries, he has more in common with another guitar-slinger who emerged in the early 2000s: Jack White. Like Homme, White was a one-man musical army until 2010, when the breakup of the White Stripes pushed him (briefly) out of the spotlight. When he returned last year with Blunderbuss , an album where White put himself under the microscope, providing the clearest glimpse into the mind of a musician who had long wrapped himself in self-created myths. On …Like Clockwork , Homme takes a similar route. Picking himself apart while simultaneously writing songs that play to his strengths, the frontman's newfound vulnerability is what creates the album's best moments. Not to slight the muscular Them Crooked Vultures or vastly-underrated Lullabies To Paralyze , but ...Like Clockwork is the strongest release from Homme in some time, showing that even after emerging as one of his generation's most unique guitarists twenty-odd years ago, he has plenty of gas left in his creative tank as he continues his endless drive out of the Palm Desert.

Queens of the Stone Age scrap remaining 2024 tour dates due to Josh Homme requiring “essential medical care”

Their festival dates have been cancelled while headline shows are postponed to 2025

Queens of the Stone Age tour

Queens of the Stone Age have scrapped their remaining tour dates for 2024 due to Josh Homme requiring “essential medical care” until the end of the year.

In an Instagram post today (August 23), the band shared a message to fans about their current status. “QOTSA regret to announce the cancellation and/or postponement of all remaining 2024 shows,” they write.

“Josh has been given no choice but to prioritize his health and to receive essential medical care through the remainder of the year.”

All their festival dates have been cancelled, while their headline shows in several US cities have been postponed to 2025, with new dates to be confirmed down the line.

The announcement comes a month after the band had already cancelled a handful of shows due to their frontman’s health.

In July, the band axed a run of European dates due to Homme requiring “emergency surgery”  back home in the US. “Every effort was made to push through and play for you, but it is no longer an option to continue,” a statement read.

Homme and co. released their eighth and most recent studio album,  ‘In Times New Roman’ , last summer. They recently headlined  Download Festival 2024  and appeared at  Hellfest .

Homme explained in a recently shared interview – which was filmed before his ongoing health issue – that  he’ll “roll his sleeves up” so that the next Queens album won’t take so long to arrive . However, with the band’s latest announcement, it’s not made clear if Homme’s current medical needs will push back development of the album.

“There was too much time in between the last record [2017’s  ‘Villains’ ] and this one,” he said.

The comments reflect those shared by guitarist  Troy Van Leeuwen and drummer Jon Theodore while at Download 2024, when the two hinted to  NME  that they had new material in the works .

“I think we’re going to take a little break. I know we have some plans for next year that are loosely being talked about,” Van Leeuwen said when asked about the band’s future plans.

Theodore added: “There are definitely some aces in some sleeves so to speak…”

The hard rock band Queens of the Stone Age have canceled the rest of their tour dates for 2024 as its frontman Josh Homme continues to recover from emergency surgery.

“QOTSA regret to announce the cancellation and/or postponement of all remaining 2024 shows. Josh has been given no choice but to prioritize his health and to receive essential medical care through the remainder of the year,” the band said in a statement posted to Instagram .

“Josh and the QOTSA family are so thankful for your support and the time we were able to spend together over the last year. Hope to see you all again in 2025,” the statement said.

The post advised festival ticket holders to visit the specific event sites for updated information. Those with tickets for specific Queens of the Stone Age shows “will be contacted by point of purchase with further information about the new dates.”

The band had previously called off the European leg of its tour in July after Homme was forced to return to the U.S. for an emergency procedure.

No details were provided about what the surgery entailed, although Homme did have surgery in 2022 to remove an unspecified form of cancer.

The 51-year-old founded Queens of the Stone Age in 1996 after having previously performed with the critically acclaimed heavy metal band Kyuss. The band has been nominated for nine Grammys, and its “…Like Clockwork” album in 2013 debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200.

The group was touring in support of its latest album, “In Times New Roman.”

Queens of the Stone Age pull plug on remaining 2024 concerts

Queens of the Stone Age have pulled the plug on their remaining shows for 2024.

Frontman Josh Homme has been forced to make the decision to abandon or postpone the concerts until 2025 as he is required to undergo "essential medical care" for an undisclosed health issue.

A social media statement read: “QOTSA regret to announce the cancellation and/or postponement of all remaining 2024 shows.

“Josh has been given no choice but to prioritize his health and to receive essential medical care through the remainder of the year.”

The 51-year-old rocker recently underwent emergency surgery and was forced to postpone a series of festival appearances.

Last month, a statement read: "Due to continued medical care, it is under doctors’ orders that Josh Homme remain in their care in the United States. The following QOTSA festival performances have been cancelled ...

"The Homme family and QOTSA are so grateful for the outpouring of well wishes and kind understanding during this time."

The group had been due to launch a North American tour in Boston on September 27 and 28, but those dates have been postponed until 2025.

They released their last album ‘In Times New Roman' last year and guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen recently hinted they are planning to take some time off before making plans for 2025.

He told NME: "I think we’re going to take a little break. I know we have some plans for next year that are loosely being talked about."

Chris Piner

Updated:

Performing alongside groups like Royal Blood, Foo Fighters, Artic Monkeys, and Kyuss, Josh Homme eventually found his home with Queens of the Stone Age. Helping form the band, Homme watched as the group released eight studio albums. Their last album, In Times New Roman , released back in 2023. While the band helmed another tour, Queens of the Stone Age canceled their plans due to Homme needing emergency surgery. With fans keeping the singer in their thoughts, it appears that the tour will have to wait a little longer.

While fans believed Queens of the Stone Age would return to the stage in August, the band shared an update on Twitter. The group wrote, “QOTSA regret to announce the cancellation and /or postponement of all remaining 2024 shows.” Giving some insight on Homme, the group continued, “Josh has been given no choice but to prioritize his health and to receive essential medical care through the remainder of the year.”

Although knowing fans hate to hear the news about canceled shows, Queens of the Stone Age took a moment to share thanks for the love they received. “Josh and the QOTSA family are so thankful for your support and the time we were able to spend together over the last year. Hope to see you all again in 2025.”

Josh Homme Health Struggles Remain A Mystery

Gaining over 200,000 views, fans took a moment to spread some love to Homme . “Damn, hope Josh gets well soon. He’s a guy who can get up on stage and play even in a situation like this. I’m glad that he or someone else is prioritizing his health…” One comment added, “We are rooting for the recovery Josh Homme and that QOTSA returns to do shows.”

With shows planned in Boston and Cincinnati, Queens of the Stone Age hope to return to the stage in 2025. But for now, the band remained focused on Homme. While giving updates to fans, not much is known about Homme’s health struggles. Back in 2022, the singer underwent surgery to help him fight cancer. Although successfully removed, some worry about Homme and his current state.

"Josh (Homme — lead singer) has been given no choice but to prioritize his health and to receive essential medical care through the remainder of the year," a statement from the band reads on Facebook . Queens of the Stone Age will be replaced with another performer at Soundside, festival organizers said. "Please join us in wishing Josh and his family well during this time," a statement on Soundside's X (formerly Twitter) reads . "New lineup addition to be announced soon."

Soundside Music Festival will be held inside of Bridgeport's Seaside Park on Sept. 28 and 29. This year's headlining performers are Noah Kahan on Saturday and Foo Fighters on Sunday. Other acts appearing at the festival include Goo Goo Dolls, Fleet Foxes, Norah Jones, Teddy Swims, Boyz II Men, Grace Potter and Gregory Alan Isakov among others.
