Hamilton Island Snorkel Tour - FAQs

What reef location do you visit?

  • We operate to Bait Reef on our full day tour and the fringing reefs around Hook Island on the half day tour.

Is it still worth visiting the Great Barrier Reef?

  • Yes - The Great Barrier Reef is still very much alive, healthy and definitely worth visiting.
  • Although certain parts of the reef did sustain natural damage during the cyclone, our team have completed trips around the Whitsundays region and outer Great Barrier Reef, and have found plenty of healthy areas to snorkel.

What is the underwater visibility like?

  • The visibility out at the reef changes every day dependent on the prevalent weather conditions.

What can I expect to see on this snorkel tour?

  • Both locations are packed with coral, colour and marine life.
  • The fringing inner reef tends to be slightly more colourful due to the nature of the soft coral that grows around these areas.
  • You will find numerous smaller reef-dwelling fish such as parrotfish, angelfish, batfish, damselfish and fusiliers.
  • At the outer reef, you can expect to see a hard coral platform reef with impressive drop offs and our friendly resident giant trevallies, along with countless colourful reef fish. If you're lucky you might even get a visit from a turtle, ray or white tip reef shark while on one of our trips!

Is the reef all bleached?

  • No - We are lucky in the Whitsundays to have healthy reef systems which have not been dramatically affected by coral bleaching.
  • Coral bleaching occurs when higher than average water temperatures cause Zooxanthellae (little creatures that live within the coral) to leave.
  • When this happens, you are left with the skeleton of the coral.

Our water temperatures sit between 22-28 degrees Celsius all year round, making for ideal coral conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

For our half day Hamilton Island dive and snorkel tours we cruise our way to the northern section of Hook Island to explore some fringing reefs. Should the conditions here not be favourable we may relocate to Blue Pearl Bay or Cateran Bay.

What is visibility like?

The visibility out at the reef changes every day dependent on the prevalent weather conditions.

During the peak summer months you can expect an average of 5-8m around the inner fringing reef.

The winter months typically see visibility well in excess of averages due to lower tidal ranges

What can I expect to see?

The Whitsunday Island fringing inner reef tends to be slightly more colourful due to the nature of the soft coral that grows around these areas.

You will find numerous smaller reef-dwelling fish such as parrotfish, angelfish, batfish, damselfish and fusiliers. If you're lucky you might even get a visit from a turtle, ray or white tip reef shark whilst on one of our trips!

Map of the Great Barrier Reef

Hamilton Island is situated at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, near Airlie Beach and Whitehaven Beach and is ideal launching pad for the many day trips on offer. The island is a great day trip experience, has many things to offer to island, sea and beach lovers, and you will stay entertained throughout your day trips. Let’s know more about the best day trips on offer on Hamilton Island , and the fun things you can do here.

Hamilton Island in the heart of the Whitsundays

You will get sunshine almost all year round on Hamilton Island. But if you want to experience the best weather on this island, which will be less crowded, and perfect for water sports, you can visit this place from December to February. Now, let’s look at the top things you can do here on this Australian island.

This is the biggest coral reef in the world, and this is the prime reason you are visiting this beautiful island. Hamilton Island is part of the famous Whitsundays Islands, and you can take a boat and sail over the crystal clear water on the reef .

You will find lots of fun activities to do here, and you can start by dipping your toes in the clear water of the reef. Go snorkeling and meet the colorful fishes, and find out about the world of beautiful reefs under the water. If you don’t like wetting your clothes, then just go on the submarine safari and enjoy the underwater scenery.

Head Out To Whitehaven Beach

You will find Whitehaven Beach located in Queensland , Australia. Here you will find a lot of things to do. You can take a thirty-minute ride in a catamaran to reach Whitehaven Beach, which is one of the most popular attractions of the Whitsundays islands.

Helicopter over Whitehaven Beach

The iconic water here has the color of precious jewels and has a pristine white sand beach. You’ll want to take lots of photos to post on your Instagram feed.

You can opt for several day trips from Hamilton Island, which will take you on a cruise and you can go on a trip to the nearby Hill Inlet. Also, if you want to explore in style, you can hire a private yacht and travel the beach area.

Sail in the waters of the Whitsunday Islands

While you are at Hamilton, you must visit the Whitsunday Islands , and go on a sailing day trip. You can also swim in the azure water, and enjoy the water and the sunlight while partying in the catamaran. You will have every refreshments, and fun during the sailing trip.

Visit heart reef

You can hire a helicopter to fly over the beautiful Heart reef. The name comes from its heart like shape, and when you are visiting Whitsundays Islands, you must add this day trip to your list.

Aerial of Heart Reef

The helicopter can accommodate six people for a thirty-minute ride of the heart reef, Hill Inlet, and Whitehaven Beach. When you finally reach the helipad after the helicopter tour, you can stay there for ninety minutes. Go on snorkeling, drink wine, or sunbathe.

Learn fishing

If you love fishing or want to try out this activity, you can do it in the Whitsunday Islands. You can take a half-day off from the Hamilton Island, and try out fishing. You can hire a fishing charter from Hamilton, and it will take you to the remote areas of Whitsunday waters.

Go on a hike

This is another day trip experience you can do while you are on Hamilton Island. If you are not a fan of watersports, then hike to Passage Peak. The top is two thirty-four meters high from sea level, and you will then hike adventurous and fun.

Once you are up there, you will get a panoramic view of Hamilton Beach, and you can spot Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet from the top. However, if you are going to the top, make sure to wear good hiking boots.

There are so many side day trips to take while staying on Hamilton Island. You can go snorkeling, helicopter riding over the reef, sail on the turquoise water and many more. So, why wait? Pack your bags and arrange the trip now!

Discover an island escape across the beaches of Queensland

Ancient forests, world-famous coral reefs and buzzy cities are just a handful of the things to expect on a trip to queensland, australia’s second-largest state, article bookmarked.

Queensland’s islands are stunning gateways to sun-drenched landscapes and marine adventures

With easy access to endless rainforests, beautiful beaches and postcard-worthy islands right off the coast from south to north, the opportunity to explore Australian nature in its purest form has never been easier than it is in Queensland. Here’s where to go and what to do if you’re seeking an unforgettable trip to Australia, jam-packed with breathtaking beaches and island getaways.

Lady Elliot Island

At the southernmost tip of the world-famous Great Barrier Reef , Lady Elliot Island is a must-visit for anyone who loves spending time by the ocean and witnessing marine wildlife. This idyllic island was formed six million years ago from a coral reef growing out of the water, meaning the beach is made almost entirely of coral. It’s mostly famous for its huge populations of giant majestic manta rays and marine life, including multi-coloured parrotfish, reef sharks, green and loggerhead turtles and gliding eagle stingrays. There’s also an incredibly diverse population of seabirds and migratory species, from wedge-tailed shearwaters to striking red-tailed tropicbirds. Lady Elliot Island also serves as a model for sustainable tourism, operating on renewable energy and actively participating in projects aimed at preserving and regenerating coral reefs.

North Stradbroke Island

For laid-back island life, North Stradbroke Island is your calling. With easy access from Brisbane , you can combine seeing all the city sights with a slice of beachside bliss. It’s the second-largest sand island in the world and is characterised by incredible landscapes of sandy beaches, freshwater lakes, mottled dunes and thick bushland. Get stuck into all kinds of outdoor activities like swimming, surfing, bushwalking and whale watching at Point Lookout during the migration season. Here you can also don your hiking boots and head along the North Gorge Walk, keeping your eyes peeled for dolphins, turtles and other marine life frolicking in the neighbouring sea. The island has countless pristine beaches, including Cylinder Beach, Frenchman’s Beach, and Main Beach, where you can enjoy swimming, surfing and soaking up the sun.

Moreton Island

Moreton Island is another adventurer’s haven just over an hour from buzzy Brisbane. You could easily spend an entire week knee-deep in activities here and still have heaps left to do. The island’s crystal clear freshwater Blue Lagoon is a popular spot for swimming and chilling, bordered by craggy dunes and dense greenery. There’s also the Tangalooma Desert, a dream to explore by 4x4; hop on an organised tour or rent your own four-wheeler. Make sure you take along your camera, the area is defined by striking multicoloured dunes, further enhanced by shadows and light that dance on the hilly sandbanks throughout the day.

K’gari (Fraser Island)

If there’s one thing Queensland isn’t short of, it’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, of which the region boasts five, including K’gari , formerly Fraser Island. It’s the world’s largest sand island and one of its most remarkable, consisting of 122km of unique landscapes scattered with tropical rainforest springing out of sand, iridescent freshwater lakes, jacuzzi-like Champagne Pools, shipwrecks and countless ocean lookout points. Many people explore the island by 4x4, traversing shifting dunes and between lush forests, spotting dingoes and swamp wallabies along the way. If you have time, spend a night camping out under the stars; the night sky here is phenomenal, and you can even catch a glimpse of the Milky Way, constellations and meteor showers away from the urban glow.

Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island, or Hamo as the locals often call it, is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and world-renowned Whitehaven Beach. This tropical paradise is one of the largest of the 74 islands that make up the Whitsundays , famous for its white sandy beaches and multicoloured coral reefs, best explored by boat or seaplane. Explore some of the Great Barrier Reef on a snorkelling or diving tour , getting up close to green sea turtles, Nemo-like clownfish and bobbing sea cucumbers. If you prefer something a little more leisurely, there are loads of island bush walks that take you to hidden coves, secret beaches and scenic lookouts. Pack a picnic to enjoy enroute at any of the island’s picturesque picnic spots.

Green Island

Queensland is the gift that keeps on giving, and less than an hour from Cairns , you’ll find Green Island, a magnificent 6,000-year-old coral cay situated amongst the Great Barrier Reef. It’s a unique place to stay, covered in a carpet of tropical rainforest filled with native flora and fauna and surrounded by perfect white sand beaches. Spend a day here or stay a few nights at the resort for the ultimate luxurious getaway. Make sure you save plenty of time to snorkel or scuba dive here, the waters are teeming with all kinds of marine life and magnificent, brightly coloured coral. For a more laid-back activity, cruise around the coastline by canoe and take in all the incredible views from the water, or follow one of the many nature trails the island has to offer.
