What Does It Mean For A Person To Be "Remarkable"?

As we go through life, and when we’re lucky, we encounter truly remarkable people and pets throughout our journey.

They stand out to us from the crowd and we’re drawn to them like a magnet. Our love for them grows as we experience memories with them that last a lifetime.

It’s an honor to have remarkable people and pets in our lives. They make life interesting and fulfilling, keep us on our toes, and inspire us to live life to the fullest while we’re alive.

Remarkable people and pets are often the ones who teach us to put one foot in front of the other when times get tough. They are the ones we draw strength and inspiration from in order to keep moving forward with what they’ve taught us. And the more we find out about them, the more we want to honor, celebrate, and carry on their remarkable legacy when they’ve passed.

“It’s not always about the big moments. A lot of times it’s all the little moments combined that are special.”

Hope H., Eterneva Customer

Defining Remarkable

According to Meriam-Webster, the word remarkable is an adjective defined as “worthy of being or likely to be noticed especially as being uncommon or extraordinary.”

However, if you were to answer what it is that makes someone remarkable, you’d likely have a different answer than the next person. While the definition is great, it doesn’t encompass all of the unique facets that make someone truly remarkable.

What is remarkable will be subjective to the person defining it.

While I might find my beloved cat truly remarkable for the ways she was able to perceive my pain and guide me towards healing, another person may not see exactly how remarkable that is to me. And that’s okay!

If everyone was remarkable in the exact same way, life would be pretty boring. So instead, we have beautiful and unique examples of remarkable people and pets living incredible lives, helping others, and doing things that inspire greatness in others.

When it comes to being remarkable, there is no one-size-fits-all definition. Every remarkable life is just like a diamond, they shine bright (especially under pressure) and they are one-of-a-kind, forever. How each remarkable life shines is unique and beautiful in its own way.

What makes someone remarkable?

So then, how do we describe how and why someone is remarkable?

Is it the way they treated you? The way they lived life to the fullest? The incredible things they did time and time again? The way they made you feel loved like no one else can?

Maybe it’s how they continue to inspire you to be a better person. Or they were remarkable because they defied all odds and walked on wings of an in-flight plane .

While we tolerate some people in our life, there are others we’re drawn to and always want to spend more time with. They are the ones we always hold space for in our lives and teach us lessons that continue to unfold with time.

We describe these extraordinary people and pets as being remarkable.

“What makes someone remarkable is not what they DO, but who they BE. It's not the achievements, the accomplishments, the ladders that were climbed. It's how they showed up in everyday moments. The joy, laughter, and levity they brought. The depth to their relationships. Their unwavering, steadfast stand for those in their life. The remarkable are unapologetically authentic, conscious of their blessings, and didn't take their people for granted.”

Adelle Archer, Chief Executive Officer & Co-Founder at Eterneva

The remarkable bring out the best in us, help us feel alive, show us what love is, support us, or maybe they can make us laugh like no one else can.

“Being remarkable is being there, no matter what. It’s not about accomplishments or awards. It’s about consistently showing up for the people you love. It’s not just about finding joy in life, it’s about figuring out how to give joy. It’s about the tiny selfless acts of kindness that show your loved ones that you are thinking of them and that someone wants to help make their day just a little bit better.”

Garrett Ozar, Chief Strategy Officer & Co-Founder at Eterneva

Remarkable lives leave their mark loudly. We remember them daily and we grieve for them deeply when they’re no longer around.

Remembering Remarkably

In 2015, Eterneva’s co-founder Adelle Archer, had a dear mentor, Tracey, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer and given three months to live when she was only 47 years old.

A senior executive at a tech company in Austin, she had already accomplished much yet really was just getting started. She was afraid that she would die before having had the chance to create a legacy.

What she didn’t know was that she had already made her mark on the world. When news of her diagnosis spread, people wrote to her with stories of how she had personally impacted their lives. Tracey died knowing that she had left the legacy she always wanted.

As a guardian of Tracey’s ashes, Adelle chose to have them turned into a black diamond to capture her sparkling spirit, and ensure that her legacy lives on. The adventure of honoring Tracey’s life with a memorial diamond was inspired by just how remarkable she was to Adelle and the impact she made.

As Adelle researched the options for getting a diamond made from Tracey’s ashes, none were up to par for what she was after. She didn’t want to send away her ashes and wonder for months when and how the diamond would return. She wanted something that was personal, bright, and forever, that would also speak to just how remarkable Tracey was.

Adelle and co-founder, Garrett Ozar, went on to launch Eterneva, a company that honors and celebrates remarkable lives with memorial diamonds. A company that leans in and listens to customers when they’re going through disorienting loss.  Inspired by Tracey from the beginning, Eterneva now focuses on three important things:

  • Listening and understanding Losing a remarkable loved one is devastating beyond words. The team at Eterneva knows that grief is a long journey and they are along for the ride to listen and talk about loved ones. The hope is to bring brightness and a sense of meaning to an otherwise tough time.
  • Crafting every moment to be personal Peace of mind is everything. Consequently, Eterneva strives to go above and beyond by how a loved one’s ashes are cared for, including quality control measures, and transparent communication at every stage.
  • Acknowledging the legacy that was earned The diamond is a symbol that is earned by the loved one who passed. A symbol that their character had the power to make people better versions of themselves. Eterneva wants to share that remarkable character with the world.

It’s amazing to witness how one person’s remarkable life and legacy was able to inspire a new mission to remember remarkably, where loved ones are celebrated in a bright new way.

Remarkable Legacies Moving Forward As A Diamond

One thing that’s become clear at Eterneva over the years of turning remarkable loved ones into diamonds is that we are at a brilliant intersection of remembering.

“I feel like I can go on and on with so many examples that I have learned directly from customers. That’s the amazing thing about what we do… no one grows a diamond for a loved one that wasn’t remarkable to them.”

Our customers continue to teach us what a remarkable life looks like every time a diamond is formed.

“ Just being in a room with her made everything better. She was smart and humble about it. She had a lot of wisdom to give and anybody who asked her questions walked away from the situation feeling seen and encouraged.”

- Sydney , Eterneva customer

We are fortunate to learn from our customers, sometimes crying alongside them, and help them celebrate their loved ones in a way that feels just right.

“This is how I want to remember my Tank. This is timeless. It’ll be with me forever. And it’s not just something that’s going to sit in a box on your shelf. It’s something that you can show off. And when people tell you how beautiful your diamond is, you get to share that story with them and you get to share. Oh yeah. This is actually my dog. Let me tell you about it. And it’s just such a nice way to memorialize someone that meant so much to you.”

  Dani , Eterneva customer

And then there are the moments we realize how strong connections with a loved one are truly remarkable and leave their mark forever.

“My mom completely impacted my life in the way that she was just very, very forceful about her children being very fearless about life. She wanted us to try everything. She has impacted my life in the greatest way possible.”

Cogey , Eterneva customer

Eterneva Honors & Celebrates Remarkable Lives

At Eterneva we know, first hand, just how disorienting loss is today. And when you layer that with our modern, always-connected-reality, where loved ones are just a touch away, losing that connection with them is unimaginable.

We believe you shouldn’t have to “move on”, instead you should be able to move forward with your loved one. Our mission is to bring brightness and meaning to loss, and we do that by helping customers turn their remarkable loved ones ashes into a one-of-a-kind diamond that will shine brightly forever .

This is about a remarkable life.

Remarkable lives deserve to be honored and celebrated. And those still alive deserve to have a bright path forward as they carry on their legacy. It’s what allows us to move forward with grief, finding meaning amongst the loss, and recognizing that legacies can continue to be carried on in remarkable ways.

Interestingly, 78% of Eterneva customers surveyed reported the process of turning their loved one into a diamond to be beneficial to their grieving process.

If you’d like to learn more about how our diamond growing process works, we invite you to learn more and schedule a time to talk to someone on our team . We can’t wait to hear about your remarkable loved one. 💙

  • When & How to Write an Adventure

I. What is Adventure?

Adventure (pronounced ad-ven-cher) was originally a Middle English word derived from the Old French aventure meaning “destiny,” “fate,” or “chance event.” Today, we define adventure as a remarkable or unexpected journey, experience, or event that a person participates in as a result of chance. This last detail, a result of chance , is a key element of adventure; the stories usually involve a character who is brought to the adventure by chance, and chance usually plays a large role in the episodes of the story. Also, adventures usually includes dangerous situations, narrow escapes, problems to be solved through intelligence and skill, exotic people and places, and brave deeds.

II. Example of Adventure

The following short passage might be found in a piece of adventure:

The young deckhand could see the approaching island, palm trees swaying in the ocean breeze, sandy shores littered with driftwood, tropical birds singing in the hot Caribbean sun—and somewhere, deep in the jungle, buried somewhere, was the treasure he had been reading about since he was a young boy. And now, he was going to part of the team to discover it and take it back home to save his nation’s people.

The above passage sets up the action that is about to come for the protagonist—a quest to discover a treasure. It is clear from this selection that the deckhand has traveled far and for a long time to reach this island; whether or not the trip was worth it remains a mystery for the reader to enjoy discovering.

III. Types of Adventure

There are many types of adventure but their meanings are obvious.  You could see most of them by exploring Netflix—types such as fantasy adventure, science-fiction adventure, supernatural adventure, and historical adventure.

IV. Importance of Adventure

Adventure stories have been popular since the earliest forms of literary fiction. For instance, one of the oldest pieces of fiction in English is an adventure written during the Middle Ages— Beowulf .  In fact, most medieval romances , such as the King Arthur stories, consisted of a series of adventures.

Adventures are important to humanity in a couple of ways. They are a form of “the hero’s journey” which, according to theorist Joseph Campbell is a universal story about the psychological growth of human beings.  Which is probably why adventures are usually stories of self-discovery for the protagonist.  Mythological stories are also usually adventures and as we have all heard, mythology is the way ancient cultures explained their world and their beliefs.  Finally, it is a form of escapist literature—works that allow the reader to escape everyday life to enjoy strange faraway lands and wild stories of mystery and discovery; in other words, adventure is food for the imagination, one of our most important forms of intelligence.

V. Examples of Adventure in Literature

Two of Mark Twain’s most celebrated works are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Both stories are the adventures of Tom and Huck, two young boys growing up on the Mississippi River in the late 1800s. Below is a short passage that captures Tom’s thoughts in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer:

What if he turned his back, now, and disappeared mysteriously? What if he went away — ever so far away, into unknown countries beyond the seas — and never came back any more!

Tom Sawyer is a fairly normal boy while Huck Finn, the son of the town drunk, is more of a drifter and often the driver of the adventures. The thoughts reflect the thinking of many if not all little boys, which shows us why adventure stories are so popular; most of us hunger for adventure when we are children—and most adults hunger to feel what it is like to be a child again.

Gulliver’s Travels is a satirical adventure novel by author Jonathan Swift. In this classic of English literature, a man named Gulliver is shipwrecked on a strange island, and from then on encounters many unusual people, places, and things. Swift’s adventure story is unusual, however, because it satirizes many elements of a traditional adventure story and parodies “traveler’s tales,” which were popular during Swift’s lifetime in the 1700’s. Below is a passage that expresses Gulliver’s observations upon reaching a new land:

I did not discover any good effects they produced; but on the contrary, I never knew a soil so unhappily cultivated, houses so ill contrived and so ruinous, or a people whose countenances and habit expressed so much misery and want.

Swift’s novel is a commentary on society, politics, religion, morality, and other social topics. In the above passage, Swift actually makes fun of a traditional adventure story by providing a detailed description of a miserable and unimpressive place. Some of Gulliver’s travels lead him to interesting and awing discoveries, while others lead to boring and disappointing discoveries.

VI. Examples of Adventure in Pop Culture

Hook is a fantasy adventure movie based on the beloved fairy tale and adventure story Peter Pan .  In the film (not in the original story) Peter is a middle-aged workaholic who overlooks his family. One night, the villainous pirate Captain Hook kidnaps his children—because Peter is actually the grown up Peter Pan, but he doesn’t remember his life in Neverland. He returns to Neverland to get his children back, and goes on a wild adventure. After rejoining the Lost Boys and Tinkerbell, Peter resumes his identity as the hero Peter Pan, and confronts Captain Hook.

Hook (5/8) Movie CLIP - Peter Confronts Hook (1991) HD

Peter and his Lost Boys face Captain Hook and his crew in an important battle in Neverland’s history. It is what Peter’s whole adventure has been leading to and what the audience has been waiting for throughout the story.

Treasure Planet is an animated adaptation of the famous adventure novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. In the film, the young protagonist Jim Hawkins sets out on a quest to find the mysterious treasure planet, which legend claims is home to the infamous Captain Flint’s vast collection of hidden treasure.

Adventure stories can be changed to take place in any time or location. The classic story of Treasure Island is reset in the future, with flying ships and strange aliens, robots and interstellar travel; it achieves the same feelings as Treasure Island but in a new and exciting way.

VII. Related Terms

Fantasy a genre of fiction that concentrates on imaginary elements (the fantastic). This can mean magic, the supernatural, alternate worlds, superheroes, monsters, fairies, magical creatures, and mythological heroes. Many adventure stories involve elements of fantasy, but not all fantasy stories are necessarily adventure stories.

Adventure Fiction

Adventure fiction is a genre of literature that features stories of adventure, such as world travel, difficult quests, voyages of discovery, and other journeys. They might involve things like pirates and buried treasure, the search for a secret place or object, or a quest or expedition whose success is crucial for personal or societal reasons.

VIII. Conclusion

In conclusion, adventure allows the audience to escape into exciting stories about faraway places, long hidden secrets, and voyages of discovery. It is an age-old genre that has been popular among all ages since the beginning of literature because human beings are born with imaginations—perhaps our most unique quality among all animals!

Oprah Winfrey Shares Her Remarkable Journey and What She’s Learned: 'I'm Grateful for It All'

At 70, the beloved icon and cultural trailblazer is driven by gratitude and a lifelong purpose to uplift others

When Oprah Winfrey appeared on the cover of PEOPLE for the first time, in January 1987, the milestone was not lost on her. "It was nothing I had ever imagined could happen to me," recalls Winfrey, whose hit talk show had just surpassed Phil Donahue’s atop the national TV ratings. "I was bedazzled." By any measure, the now 70-year-old icon has been bedazzling the world herself ever since. A cultural trailblazer, movie star, media mogul and global philanthropist, Winfrey is flush with gratitude for her remarkable journey. Most of all, she embraces a lifelong purpose to inspire and uplift others. In an interview for PEOPLE's 50th anniversary special issue, Winfrey says: "Gratitude really is my religion."

What did you buy with your first big paycheck?   I was going to furnish my first apartment in Chicago, and I walked into Crate & Barrel. There was a flatware set for $49.95. I did not get it because I still didn’t think I was making enough money to afford a six-piece set. Many years later, I was in a store and somebody was debating whether to get the flatware, and I went to the counter and paid for it because I remember that feeling of not being able to afford it. I love doing that.

You’ve always given back. I very much remember where I come from.

What would you tell your younger self starting out? "Hold on, girl. Hold on to yourself." The most important thing is to remain centered so whether you're on the cover of PEOPLE or not, your identity isn't tied to what the rest of the world says it is. Being able to not get confused by what the external says about your internal self is the most important thing for anybody who's going to take the fame ride.

One of the reasons I have remained so centered over the years is because when it happened to me, I'd already been working for a very long time. I'd been in TV since I was 19, and so by 1987 I was already, what, 33? And I had grown up centered in the church and had a really firm foundation of who I was. So I was excited to share myself, my talent, that show with the audience, but I wasn't really trying to figure out who I was.

At 70, does your outlook change? No. When you’re grateful for what you have, you end up seeing you have more than you imagine. Start with your breath, and recognize what an absolute miracle it is that your heart’s still pumping. That is a revelation to me every day. I’m grateful for it all.

Who in the industry has been most supportive over the course of your journey? In those early years, it was Maya Angelou who kept me grounded, the person who kept me absolutely centered. [And] I've never been to a therapist because I had so many on the show, but my real therapy came from downloading whatever was happening in the day with Gayle [King] every night. There wasn't a day that we missed being on some kind of phone call talking about what had happened in our days. I realized years later, talking to an expert about something else, that that was my therapy, that was my release. It was the way I regulated myself every day. I've had one of the best friendships anybody could have. So having Maya, having Gayle, having Sidney Poitier before he passed... Those were the people who kept me grounded.

You've enjoyed many career milestones, but does the 2007 opening of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa hold a special place for you? Yes. It's incredible that these young girls whom I saw something in, that they themselves did not see or feel or know at the time, are now making their way out in the world. It is just one of the greatest rewards of my life.

You have an amazing ability to distill complicated thoughts and feelings so that people can digest them and learn. Where does that gift come from? Well, when I was a little kid living on a dirt road in Mississippi, I was the one that was always playing the teacher. And if we were playing house, I was the mother. Even if I was the younger girl, I would have to be the mother over everybody else. Some people call that bossy — I just call it, well, I know better, so I should be the one. I would have to say that teaching is my first love.

And the thing that still brings me the greatest level of satisfaction is having a conversation, and in the middle of the conversation, someone discovers something or hears something and says, "Oh, I never thought of it that way before." I have to tell you, on the Oprah Show , when people actually said that out loud, I would just [cry] because that's the best thing that could happen. That is what enlightenment is.

What are your hopes and fears for your 70s? For everybody who's approaching this stage in your life, your number one concern is your health. I don't live with a fear of death, but I live with a conscious acknowledgement that it's possible at any time... I would say that one of the reasons why I can sit in wisdom now, and I literally sit in the wisdom and I make no apologies for it, is because I have paid attention and I am really fully conscious. I've been paying attention for a very long time.

When I turned 50, Maya Angelou wrote a poem for me. She says, "I have nothing to give you, but my heart and my words" and she wrote a poem called Continue. One of the most important lines from that poem is, "My wish for you is that you continue to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness." And that is what I intend to do. She also says, "I hope that you let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel" and that is the way I rule my life. I sound like a broken record, but gratitude really is my religion.

Katherine Johnson

My Remarkable Journey: A Memoir Paperback – Large Print, June 1, 2021

Purchase options and add-ons.

The remarkable woman at heart of the smash New York Times bestseller and Oscar-winning film Hidden Figures tells the full story of her life, including what it took to work at NASA, help land the first man on the moon, and live through a century of turmoil and change. In 2015, at the age of 97, Katherine Johnson became a global celebrity. President Barack Obama awarded her the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom—the nation’s highest civilian honor—for her pioneering work as a mathematician on NASA’s first flights into space. Her contributions to America’s space program were celebrated in a blockbuster and Academy-award nominated movie.

In this memoir, Katherine shares her personal journey from child prodigy in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia to NASA human computer. In her life after retirement, she served  as a beacon of light for her family and community alike.  Her story is centered around the basic tenets of her life—no one is better than you, education is paramount, and asking questions can break barriers. The memoir captures the many facets of this unique woman: the curious “daddy’s girl,” pioneering professional, and sage elder.

This multidimensional portrait is also the record of a century of racial history that reveals the influential role educators at segregated schools and Historically Black Colleges and Universities played in nurturing the dreams of trailblazers like Katherine. The author pays homage to her mentor—the African American professor who inspired her to become a research mathematician despite having his own dream crushed by racism.

Infused with the uplifting wisdom of a woman who handled great fame with genuine humility and great tragedy with enduring hope, My Remarkable Journey ultimately brings into focus a determined woman who navigated tough racial terrain with soft-spoken grace—and the unrelenting grit required to make history and inspire future generations.

Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race

Editorial Reviews

“Katherine Johnson’s personal story never gets old, and never fails to inspire.”  — Margot Lee Shetterly, Author of the New York Times bestseller Hidden Figures

“Katherine Johnson was a fierce intellect, a commanding presence, a determined boundary breaker, a passionate advocate for justice, and, simultaneously, one of the most kind, gentle, and humble spirits I have ever met.  The story of this human computer whose calculations changed the world is also the story of a woman of deep, abiding faith whose trust in God and whose determination to excel changed everyone around her.  In this book, in her own words, her story rises like a rocket, triumphantly and majestically.  Reading it, you will feel your spirit soar.” — Brian K. Blount, President of the Union Presbyterian Seminary, and Former Pastor to Katherine

“Her brilliance and numbers helped me and many others reach the stars. A storied and rich legacy that will resonate with many generations of explorers.”  — Astronaut Leland Melvin, author of Chasing Space

“A telling and inspirational look into the amazing life of Katherine G. Johnson that goes beyond the numbers to tell a story of brilliance, perseverance and compassion.  Katherine’s journey charted a course to the stars both compelling and beautiful. A story of her humanity, her genius and her compassion that enabled both the dreams of a Nation and of every individual she encountered.”  — Clayton P. Turner, Director of NASA’s Langley Research Center

“This compelling memoir takes us on Katherine’s journey as she navigates social forces, great loss, and personal triumph. Katherine demonstrated self-responsibility, determination, a great work ethic, and as her father taught her, she remained humble even after receiving many prestigious recognitions and awards. Her memoir captures the essence of the values our program wants to exemplify and having her name on our building inspires us to honor her legacy.” — Gregory Blaney, Director, NASA’s Katherine Johnson Independent Verification and Validation Facility, Fairmont, WV

“Katherine Johnson’s story shows us how to make it to the moon and back...and beyond.”  — Ted Melfi, Director of Hidden Figures

“Katherine Johnson's story of accomplishment and persistence deserves to be part of the nation's Civil Rights archive. Her narrative--from the Allegheny Mountains in West Virginia to a key position at NASA—illustrates a triumph of intellect, optimism and grace that is too often ignored in the first draft of history, especially in the case of accomplished Black mathematicians and scientists. My Remarkable Journey offers a rare private glimpse into an admirable arc of the life of this distinguished centenarian, reaching from White Sulphur Springs farm roads to Barack Obama's White House.” — Howell Raines, former executive editor of The New York Times, is a Pulitzer Prize winner and author of My Soul Is Rested , an oral history of the civil rights movement.

"Examples of relentless determination in the face of adversity linger with the reader, showing what truly makes Johnson’s journey remarkable. Yes, her mathematical genius was inspiring. Equally inspiring was her grit." — Science News

“Johnson’s work at NASA is only one part of her extraordinary life, as recounted in this lovely posthumous memoir, co-written with her daughters. . . . Readers will enjoy Johnson’s personal accounts of the space race and the roles of Black women in STEM. This wonderful, insightful memoir is the perfect companion piece to Margot Lee Shetterly’s best-selling  Hidden Figures, which recounted the lives of Johnson and her colleagues Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson.” — Library Journal  (starred review)

“Johnson is a warm and compassionate author, filling her pages with the most personal of stories while also illuminating the times she lived through with an appreciation for all the dramatic changes occurring round her. Truly a lovely read, this is an important addition to every bookshelf devoted to great Americans.” — Booklist (starred review)

About the Author

Katherine Johnson, a 1937 West Virginia State University graduate, was an American mathematician whose calculations of orbital trajectories for NASA were critical to the success of U.S. spaceflights. During her thirty-five years at NASA and its predecessor, she earned a reputation for mastering complex manual calculations and helped pioneer the use of computers to perform the tasks. The space agency noted her "historical role as one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist." In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Katherine the nation’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The upcoming 2021 launch of a USAF Space Force GPS III Satellite has been named in her honor, and she has been awarded thirteen honorary doctorate degrees. Four major buildings, including two NASA facilities, have been named in her honor. She died in February 2020 at the age of 101.

From The Pas to Toronto: Connor Dewar’s remarkable journey to the Maple Leafs

From The Pas to Toronto: Connor Dewar’s remarkable journey to the Maple Leafs

Driving north on the barren, two-lane Manitoba Highway 10, you might feel swallowed by endless, non-descript trees with nothing larger on the horizon. No signs of commerce for miles and as such, no signs of life. Only ruggedness on one side and desolation on the other.

Inching closer to the next town, a railway creeps out of the trees and might accompany you for stretches along the highway. But trains only run from Winnipeg to The Pas once a week on their affably-named “Scenic Adventure Route.”

The people of The Pas have an understandable amount of pride in the place often referred to as “The Gateway to the North,” but they will also be the first to tell you: The town that made one of the newest Toronto Maple Leafs , Connor Dewar , does not lend itself to producing NHL players.

“You have to love the outdoors,” Greg Hunter, one of Dewar’s coaches in The Pas, said of the town of 5,639. “But shopping-wise, it’s starting to dry up a bit up here. We’re kind of a stop-and-go spot, to be honest.”

Consider the list of Canadian-born players who come from as remote a place as Dewar does: Buffalo Sabres forward Dylan Cozens is the lone active NHL player from one of Canada’s three territories, but was raised in a town (Whitehorse, Y.T.) more than five times the size of The Pas. Washington Capitals forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel was born well off the grid in Slave Lake, Alta., yet developed mostly in a suburb of Montreal. Dawson Mercer and Alex Newhook are the two lone active NHL players born in Newfoundland.

But for Dewar, the remoteness of the place he was raised in, the lack of competitive playing opportunities and the harshness of the climate meant his upbringing in The Pas created his character. He is a feisty, hard-working bottom-line forward on the ice, and a man of few words off of it.

“It’s everything I am,” Dewar accurately summarized of being raised in The Pas during a remarkably brief “Hockey Night in Canada” interview after being acquired by the Leafs, “a scrappy person from up north.”

And now, Dewar’s unique path from The Pas and tough-as-nails character could help the Maple Leafs when they need it in the playoffs.

You can never know for sure if someone will go far in hockey, but Chris Perchaluk, another of Dewar’s earliest coaches in The Pas and a family friend, insists Dewar had something.

“My first memory of Connor,” he said, unable to contain his laughter. “Well, he was just one. I walked into his house, and I was going to meet him for the first time. And he was screaming at the top of his lungs, so upset at his father because he had to stop playing mini-sticks. He was running around the house with the mini-stick, so angry. He just wanted to play.”

Dewar’s feisty spirit didn’t just come to life in The Pas. The town made him who he is.

“The most sincere, hard-working kid you’d ever want to meet,” Hunter said. “That might come from the harshness of our winters up here: We’re minus-40 two months of the year. It creates that edge. Players are hard-nosed, they work hard, nothing (is) granted to them. Connor is typical of that. He’s worked his ass off to get where he is.”

Dewar first started playing hockey at 5. Skating came naturally to him. But if there was a battle for the puck, Dewar stayed on the periphery.

It was around this time he began watching his father play adult recreational hockey on Opaskwayak Cree Nation land. Friends would gather after long hours in the paper mill operated by Canadian Kraft Paper Industries Ltd., the town’s largest employer and where Connor’s father, Jade, worked shift work. The games were a place for friends to let out the pent-up emotion that comes from being cooped up in the mill.

After one game, Jade heard from Dewar’s mother, Kim, that their son was particularly enthralled.

“He looked up at her and said, ‘Mom, I didn’t know you were supposed to work that hard at hockey,’” Jade said.

Immediately afterward, they drove to one of Dewar’s few practices.

“All of a sudden, he wanted the puck and he never looked back,” Jade said. “I don’t know what the hell happened, but he decided to play hockey.”

Dewar could dance with the puck but from that day on , he brought a fiercer spirit into his play, game by game.

“(Dewar) would give it his all, all the time,” Hunter said. “But we had a hard time challenging him because he was so far ahead of most kids because of his skating.”

The tiny size of The Pas meant there were just two, maybe three, house league teams that would just play each other multiple times a week at the smallish Roy H. Johnston Arena. So what Dewar lacked in development opportunities, he made up for by adding the physical edge that’s become part of his DNA.

“It’s very remote. You see the same people every day,” Dewar said of playing hockey in The Pas. “Seeing the same kids all the time and playing against the same teams all the time, there’s a lot of rivalries at play. And that makes it a lot more competitive, I found.”

By the time Dewar was 11, he was the best player in his age group. Maybe one of the most gifted players from the town since defenceman Curt Giles, who still owns the record for most NHL games played (895) of any player from The Pas. Dewar’s 177 games are second on that list. “It’s a very short list,” Dewar quipped.

The Pas Minor Hockey Association created a makeshift travel team that would head out every other weekend, with their shortest trip being 90 minutes north to Flin Flon, Man., but the more regular trip being the four-hour drive (one way) south to Dauphin, Man.

“We couldn’t build an elite program because we just don’t have the population,” Perchaluk said.

It was on these trips that Dewar and his teammates realized how remote their hometown was.

“You’ve got to make do with what you have,” Perchaluk said of The Pas. “When Connor was playing, 15 years ago, and you’d go on road trips, you’d get excited just so you could shop at Walmart.”

Heckling from opposition players on the ice was common. Dewar and his teammates would get asked what it was like to come play from “The Bush.”

At home, Jade built two separate outdoor rinks for his son, the second of which came when they moved further into the countryside: It was 40 feet by 80 feet, four-foot high boards, a shack outside to properly dress and warm up, and lights so his son could play well into the night.

“Sometimes you’re using a snowblower to move the snow and it comes down right behind you. He really wanted to be out there all the time. He’d come in for some warmth but keep his skates on so he could get back out,” Jade said.

It was a place for Dewar to be free, and let the constant, swirling winds push at his back. It was a place for Dewar to shoot and let out the emotion he had building inside him.

“And I was goalie, every damn night,” Jade said.

Dewar logged hundreds of extra hours of outdoor ice time every winter. That rink was the most pivotal element to his success.

“That’s where I made all my separation,” Dewar said. “I was pretty lucky.”

remarkable journey definition

By the time Dewar was 14, his parents realized their son had outgrown The Pas, at least on the ice. He’d gotten a few questions from scouts on weekend trips about his plans. He needed time to try his hand with a Triple-A program.

Many NHL players get locked into elite-level hockey from a much younger age. But Dewar was always destined to be different.

“Kids across the province were getting to play at a level I wasn’t able to,” Dewar said.

Dewar made the four-hour trip south to Dauphin, where he had been pestered by opposition players as a child.

“I was homesick for about an hour,” Dewar said confidently.

When Jade called to check in, a story was relayed by Dewar’s billet parents: His new teammate, Tyler Jubenvill, asked Dewar how it felt to be out of “The Bush” once again.

“In The Pas, we use a different compass,” Dewar replied. “There’s North, East, West and Soft.”

Dewar would stand up to his new challenge and make the town behind him proud: He led the Parkland Rangers Triple-A team in scoring his first season before moving to the Under-18 Triple-A program as a 15-year-old.

After three years with the Everett Silvertips of the WHL, Dewar was named captain of the team.

But no joy could compare to becoming just the second player drafted into the NHL from The Pas. Being selected in the third round of the 2018 draft by the Minnesota Wild and eventually making his NHL debut in 2021-22 meant “that’s the closest I’ve ever played from home,” Dewar said with a devilish grin. The 13-hour drive from The Pas to St. Paul pales in comparison to the 22-hour haul to Everett, Wash., of course.

It was a perfect landing spot for Dewar, who earned a fan in former Wild head coach Dean Evason who hailed from, of all places, Flin Flon.

“(Dewar’s) grit and competitiveness is over the top,” Evason said.

Every summer, Dewar returns to The Pas to train and hold court at Good Thymes bar and restaurant. There’s always someone to see. These are the same people who celebrated Dewar’s trade to the Maple Leafs, and will watch closely as he tries to instill the indomitable spirit of the small town in the biggest city in the country.

The same people who understand his journey in a way only a few thousand can.

“Everybody in town knew within 20 minutes of the trade being completed,” Perchaluk said. “The whole town is behind him.”
